<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"><em><strong>If you are looking for the best Gyeongju Itinerary and wondering about all the things to do in Gyeongju and places to visit in Gyeongju, you have come to the right place. Read to know all about Gyeongju, especially in spring.</strong></em></p>

<span id="more-7579"></span>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Gyeongju was not on my list of places to visit in South Korea. I obviously wanted to tick off <a href="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/one-day-in-seoul/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Seoul</a>, <a href="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/one-day-in-busan" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Busan</a> and <a href="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/jinhae-cherry-blossom-festival/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jinhae</a> because of cherry blossoms.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, it was on the itinerary of my tour, and I was intrigued to know more about it. This is when I came to know that Gyeongju is known as the “Museum without Walls” because of the numerous archaeological sites, royal tombs, ancient temples, and observatories that are listed under the <a href="https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/976/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UNESCO World Heritage Site</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This convinced me that Gyeongju is worth visiting in South Korea.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="912" height="684" src="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Cherry-blossoms-at-Bulguksa-Tempple-Gyeongju.jpg" alt="Cherry blossoms at Bulguksa Tempple, Gyeongju" class="wp-image-7182" srcset="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Cherry-blossoms-at-Bulguksa-Tempple-Gyeongju.jpg 912w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Cherry-blossoms-at-Bulguksa-Tempple-Gyeongju-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Cherry-blossoms-at-Bulguksa-Tempple-Gyeongju-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Cherry-blossoms-at-Bulguksa-Tempple-Gyeongju-585x439.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 912px) 100vw, 912px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Cherry blossoms at Bulguksa Temple, Gyeongju</figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">HISTORY OF GYEONGJU</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Gyeongju’s story dates back more than 2,000 years. In 57 BCE, a group of villages came together under the leadership of Park Hyeokgose, who founded the Silla kingdom—one of Korea’s legendary Three Kingdoms.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Over time, Gyeongju grew into a powerful capital and the seat of the Silla court, where the elite lived in wealth and grandeur. Silla was often called the “land of gold,” and dazzling treasures unearthed here still speak of the kingdom’s prosperity.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By 668 CE, the Silla dynasty had established a robust legal system and adopted Buddhism as both a spiritual and political foundation.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At its height, Gyeongju was a bustling city, home to temples, palaces, and markets, with a population that may have reached a million.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The city’s fortunes later waned as power shifted north during the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties. It endured devastation during the Mongol invasions of the 13th century and again in the Imjin War with Japan in the late 1500s.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yet, despite centuries of upheaval, Gyeongju still preserves an extraordinary collection of historic monuments, temples, and architectural wonders that make it a living museum of Korea’s past.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">THINGS TO DO IN GYEONGJU</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While a lot of people skip Gyeongju from their itinerary, I highly recommend spending at least 2 days in Gyeongju. Here are all the tourist attractions in Gyeongju.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Pay respect at the Bulguksa Temple</h3>

<div class="wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex">
<div class="wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow">
<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" width="609" height="812" src="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Dabotap-Pagoda-Gyeongju.jpg" alt="Dabotap Pagoda, Gyeongju" class="wp-image-7585" srcset="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Dabotap-Pagoda-Gyeongju.jpg 609w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Dabotap-Pagoda-Gyeongju-225x300.jpg 225w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Dabotap-Pagoda-Gyeongju-585x780.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 609px) 100vw, 609px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Dabotap Pagoda, Gyeongju</figcaption></figure>

<div class="wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow">
<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" width="609" height="812" src="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Banya-Yeonji-Pond-at-Bulguksa-premises-Things-to-do-in-Gyeongju.jpg" alt="Banya Yeonji Pond at Bulguksa premises, Things to do in Gyeongju" class="wp-image-7584" srcset="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Banya-Yeonji-Pond-at-Bulguksa-premises-Things-to-do-in-Gyeongju.jpg 609w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Banya-Yeonji-Pond-at-Bulguksa-premises-Things-to-do-in-Gyeongju-225x300.jpg 225w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Banya-Yeonji-Pond-at-Bulguksa-premises-Things-to-do-in-Gyeongju-585x780.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 609px) 100vw, 609px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Banya Yeonji Pond at Bulguksa premises, Things to do in Gyeongju</figcaption></figure>

</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Begin your morning in Gyeongju with a bus ride into the rolling hills just outside town, where the celebrated Bulguksa Temple awaits. This is one of the best places to visit in Gyeongju, especially in spring. The photos say it all!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Built in the 8th century during the height of the Silla dynasty, this sacred complex is often described as one of Korea’s most magnificent temples and a true masterpiece of Buddhist art and architecture.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995, Bulguksa is also the head temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What makes it especially striking are its elegant stone stairways &#8211; Cheongungyo (Blue Cloud Bridge) and Baegungyo (White Cloud Bridge) &#8211; that symbolically connect the earthly world to the realm of enlightenment.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The temple grounds are dotted with national treasures, including the graceful Dabotap and Seokgatap pagodas, each representing a different aspect of Buddhist philosophy. Inside its halls, centuries-old gilt Buddha statues radiate serenity, while the surrounding pine-covered mountains add a sense of quiet majesty.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When I visited Bulguksa temple in spring 2025, there was a lot of repairing work going on, due to which I could not look at the paintings. These paintings are repainted every 3-7 years.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Bulguksa Temple timings:</strong> November – January: 7:30 am to 5:00 pm; February: 7:30 am to 5:30 pm; March – September: 7:00 am to 6:00 pm; October: 7:00 am to 5:30 pm</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Bulguksa Temple entry fees:</strong> Free</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Visit Seokguram Grotto</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="660" src="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Seokguram-Grotto_Places-to-visit-in-Gyeongju.jpg" alt="Seokguram Grotto_Places to visit in Gyeongju" class="wp-image-7586" srcset="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Seokguram-Grotto_Places-to-visit-in-Gyeongju.jpg 1024w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Seokguram-Grotto_Places-to-visit-in-Gyeongju-300x193.jpg 300w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Seokguram-Grotto_Places-to-visit-in-Gyeongju-768x495.jpg 768w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Seokguram-Grotto_Places-to-visit-in-Gyeongju-585x377.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Seokguram Grotto_Places to visit in Gyeongju</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From Bulguksa Temple, you can either hike a couple of kilometres uphill, about a 30-minute walk, or hop on the #12 bus that leaves from the temple parking lot every hour starting at 8:40 AM. The bus ride takes around 20 minutes and drops you right at Seokguram Grotto.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This stone sanctuary houses a serene seated Buddha surrounded by twelve guardian figures, each carved with striking detail. The grotto holds a special wonder during the solstice, when a shaft of sunlight streams through the dome and falls directly on the Buddha’s third eye—a moment both spiritual and spectacular.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Out of respect for its sanctity, photography inside the grotto is not allowed, but the quiet atmosphere and intricate artistry leave a lasting impression without the need for a camera.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Seokguram Grotto timings:</strong> November – January: 7:30 am to 5:00 pm; February: 7:30 am to 5:30 pm; March – September: 7:00 am to 6:00 pm; October: 7:00 am to 5:30 pm</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Seokguram Grotto entry fees:</strong> 5,000 KRW per adult.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Explore the Daereungwon Tomb Complex (Royal Tombs)&nbsp;</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1212" height="909" src="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Daereungwon-Ancient-Tombs-1.jpg" alt="Daereungwon Ancient Tombs" class="wp-image-7601" style="width:820px;height:auto" srcset="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Daereungwon-Ancient-Tombs-1.jpg 1212w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Daereungwon-Ancient-Tombs-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Daereungwon-Ancient-Tombs-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Daereungwon-Ancient-Tombs-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Daereungwon-Ancient-Tombs-1-1170x878.jpg 1170w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Daereungwon-Ancient-Tombs-1-585x439.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 1212px) 100vw, 1212px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Daereungwon Ancient Tombs</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the most distinctive sights in Gyeongju is its collection of ancient royal tombs, which rise across the city like gentle grassy hills. The best place to explore them is Daereungwon Tomb Complex, where 23 burial mounds hold the remains of Silla kings, queens, and nobles.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wandering through the serene grounds feels like walking through a natural park that also happens to be a thousand years old. This is definitely one of the most popular things to do in Gyeongju.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="712" height="534" src="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Daereungwon-Tomb-Complex-display_Things-to-do-in-Gyeongju.jpg" alt="Daereungwon Tomb Complex display_Things to do in Gyeongju" class="wp-image-7588" style="width:760px;height:auto" srcset="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Daereungwon-Tomb-Complex-display_Things-to-do-in-Gyeongju.jpg 712w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Daereungwon-Tomb-Complex-display_Things-to-do-in-Gyeongju-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Daereungwon-Tomb-Complex-display_Things-to-do-in-Gyeongju-585x439.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 712px) 100vw, 712px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Display at the Tomb | Things to do in Gyeongju</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Among these mounds, the highlight is Cheonmachong, or the “Heavenly Horse Tomb”, the only one open to visitors. Step inside and you’ll discover a remarkable glimpse into Silla life through unearthed treasures, including ornaments, weapons, and an ornate gold crown that once adorned a ruler.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Daereungwon Tomb Complex timings:</strong> Every day: 9:00 am to&nbsp; 10:00 pm</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Daereungwon Tomb Complex entry fees:</strong> 3,000 KRW per adult.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Admire the Cheomseongdae Observatory&nbsp;</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Cheomseongdae-Observatory-Gyeongju.jpg" alt="Cheomseongdae Observatory, Gyeongju" class="wp-image-7589" srcset="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Cheomseongdae-Observatory-Gyeongju.jpg 1024w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Cheomseongdae-Observatory-Gyeongju-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Cheomseongdae-Observatory-Gyeongju-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Cheomseongdae-Observatory-Gyeongju-585x390.jpg 585w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Cheomseongdae-Observatory-Gyeongju-263x175.jpg 263w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Cheomseongdae Observatory, Gyeongju</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before visiting, I had imagined a massive structure because, obviously, it is an observatory. But upon reaching there, I was surprised to see a rather modest yet remarkable stone tower that feels extraordinary when you think of its age and purpose.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Built during the reign of Queen Seondeok of Silla (632–647 CE), Cheomseongdae holds the title of being the oldest surviving astronomical observatory in East Asia.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The observatory stands about 9 meters tall and just over 5 meters across. Its design is symbolic &#8211; 365 granite blocks represent the days of the year, while the twelve stones forming its base mark the months.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During the day, Cheomseongdae is a fascinating relic of early science, and by night, it glows under the starry sky, transforming into a romantic backdrop for evening walks.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In autumn, the scene is even more magical &#8211; a sweep of pink muhly grass blooms right in front of the tower, making it one of Gyeongju’s most photogenic spots.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Cheomseongdae Observatory timings:</strong> Every day: 9:00 am to 10:00 pm.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Cheomseongdae Observatory entry fees:</strong> 4,000 KRW per adult.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Hwangnidan Street&nbsp;</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Dongji-ro-Gyeongju-shopping-street-768x1024.jpg" alt="Dongji-ro, Gyeongju shopping street" class="wp-image-7094" srcset="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Dongji-ro-Gyeongju-shopping-street-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Dongji-ro-Gyeongju-shopping-street-225x300.jpg 225w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Dongji-ro-Gyeongju-shopping-street-585x780.jpg 585w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Dongji-ro-Gyeongju-shopping-street.jpg 774w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Hwangnidan Street, Gyeongju shopping street</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By the time you’ve finished visiting all the places listed above, it will be evening! And the best way to spend the evening is at Hwangnidan Street.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hwangnidan Street is the main bustling street of Gyeingju and home to many cafes, restaurants, and shops, which are all in renovated or newly-built traditional hanok-style buildings.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The views here at night are especially nice and lively, though most shops close around 9 pm.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are lots of stationary and souvenir shops and photo booths, ensuring a lively evening here.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Definitely add to your list of things to do in Gyeongju.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Hwangnidan street timings:</strong> Most shops are open from 10 am to 9 pm.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Explore Gyeongju Namsan Mountain / Gyeongju National Park</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Rock-carved-Buddhas-Chilbulam_Namsan-Mountain-Gyeongju.jpg" alt="Rock-carved Buddhas, Chilbulam_Namsan Mountain Gyeongju" class="wp-image-7592" srcset="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Rock-carved-Buddhas-Chilbulam_Namsan-Mountain-Gyeongju.jpg 1024w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Rock-carved-Buddhas-Chilbulam_Namsan-Mountain-Gyeongju-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Rock-carved-Buddhas-Chilbulam_Namsan-Mountain-Gyeongju-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Rock-carved-Buddhas-Chilbulam_Namsan-Mountain-Gyeongju-585x390.jpg 585w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Rock-carved-Buddhas-Chilbulam_Namsan-Mountain-Gyeongju-263x175.jpg 263w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Rock-carved Buddhas, Chilbulam_Namsan Mountain Gyeongju</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you love hiking, then Gyeongju will not disappoint. There are many hiking trails across the Gyeongju National Park.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The mountain has over 100 temples and 80 stone Buddha statues, spread across, and it is like a treasure hunt to find them. Depending on the time, you can tick off as many as you can. Make sure to stop by the Tourist Information Centre in town to get a map of the mountain and the hiking trails.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s a moderate hike, although there are some steep sections. There were tall grasses to walk through, hidden relics to be found, and views to be had.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Gyeongju Namsan Mountain timings:</strong> Every day: 7:00 am to 6:00 pm.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Gyeongju Namsan Mountain entry fees:</strong> Free</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Get awed by Donggung Palace &amp; Wolji Pond&nbsp;</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="614" src="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Donggung-Palace-and-Wolji-Pond-Gyeongju.jpg" alt="Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, Gyeongju." class="wp-image-7590" srcset="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Donggung-Palace-and-Wolji-Pond-Gyeongju.jpg 1000w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Donggung-Palace-and-Wolji-Pond-Gyeongju-300x184.jpg 300w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Donggung-Palace-and-Wolji-Pond-Gyeongju-768x472.jpg 768w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Donggung-Palace-and-Wolji-Pond-Gyeongju-585x359.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, Gyeongju.</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A visit to Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond is one of the best Gyeongju tourist places. While only a fraction of the original palace complex remains, the site still feels magical, especially in the evening.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As the sun dips, the reconstructed pavilions glow with warm light, their reflections shimmering perfectly in the still waters of Wolji Pond. Which is why most people prefer visiting here in the late evening.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wolji pond, originally designed as a place of leisure for Silla royalty, is still stunning. Whether you’re watching the lanterns flicker against the water, capturing mirror-like photos of the illuminated pavilions, or simply pausing on a bench to take it all in, Donggung Palace offers one of the most unforgettable moments in Gyeongju.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For anyone curious about the heart of the Silla Kingdom, the National Museum of Gyeongju is an absolute must-visit. The museum holds one of the richest collections of Korean treasures &#8211; think glittering gold crowns, delicate pottery, ancient statues, swords, and intricate jewellery. With thousands of artefacts on display at any given time, it’s the kind of place where every room unveils something awe-inspiring.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What makes the museum especially appealing is that it’s not just about glass cases and quiet halls. Some of its most iconic pieces, like the monumental Bell of King Seongdeok, are displayed outdoors. Standing over three meters tall and weighing a staggering 25 tons, the bell is the largest of its kind in Asia. Locals often call it the Emile Bell, a name tied to an old legend that adds an air of mystery to its deep, resonant chime.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even if you’re not a history buff, the museum grounds are a beautiful place to wander on a sunny day, mixing fresh air, open courtyards, and the chance to encounter priceless relics scattered around the gardens.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Amongst the Gyeongju Tourist Attractions, Woljeonggyo Bridge is the most popular one. Stretching across the Muncheon Stream, it holds the title of Korea’s largest wooden bridge, and its name poetically translates to “Shadow of the Moon.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The bridge today is a careful reconstruction of an ancient covered bridge, yet it feels timeless, especially when the pavilion roofs glow at night and their reflection ripples across the water.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The setting around the bridge is just as lovely, with walking paths, gentle streamside views, and the stone stepping-stones that Korea places across rivers, offering visitors playful ways to admire the bridge from different angles.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The area is especially beautiful when cherry blossoms bloom in spring.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A lot of visitors don a Hanbok and get their photoshoot done here.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Gyeongju Tower is one of the city’s most striking modern landmarks. Inspired by Korea’s traditional pagodas, the tower features a dramatic cut-out silhouette that makes it unique and stunning.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By day, its design stands out against the sky, and by night, it glows beautifully from within, creating a magical appearance.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Standing 30 stories tall, the tower offers more than just a unique exterior. Visitors can head up to the observation deck for sweeping views of the Expo Park and beyond.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The park itself is worth lingering in: there’s a tranquil lotus pond that looks magical in the evening, and in summer, the gardens bloom with vibrant roses, adding a burst of colour to the scene.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">WHAT TO EAT IN GYEONGJU</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most South Korean cities have a dish that stands for them, and in Gyeongju, there’s nothing in particular. However, there are amazing restaurants across the Hwangnidan Street to satisfy your cravings. I found Thai, Italian and Mexican restaurants with delicious food and vegetarian options.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Hwangnam bread</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Locals proudly call it Gyeongju bread, a bite-sized pastry with a smooth red bean filling that traces its origins back to 1939, when it was first baked in a small family shop in central Gyeongju. Today, it’s become something of a city symbol. While red bean–filled buns and cakes are easy to find all over Korea, even at street food stalls, this version is recognisable by the delicate chrysanthemum stamped on its golden top.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Beopju</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A traditional Korean liquor, historically associated with Buddhist rituals. It carries profound cultural value and a unique flavour.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Cheese coin bread in Gyeongju&nbsp;</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It refers to 10 Won Bread, a popular street food that originated in Gyeongju in 2019 and is shaped like a 10 Won coin, filled with stretchy mozzarella cheese. This treat is made with pancake or waffle batter and can be found in the tourist areas of the city, especially along the Hwangnidan street.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="812" height="609" src="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/10-won-bread_Viral-bread-from-Gyeongju.jpg" alt="10 won bread_Viral bread from Gyeongju" class="wp-image-7597" srcset="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/10-won-bread_Viral-bread-from-Gyeongju.jpg 812w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/10-won-bread_Viral-bread-from-Gyeongju-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/10-won-bread_Viral-bread-from-Gyeongju-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/10-won-bread_Viral-bread-from-Gyeongju-585x439.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 812px) 100vw, 812px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">10 won bread | Viral bread from Gyeongju</figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">WHERE TO STAY IN GYEONGJU</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While a lot of people take up a day trip to Gyeongju, I highly recommend spending the night. Not only will it provide you with more time to explore the town, but you’ll also feel less rushed. For those interested, I’ve included below some of the most popular places to stay in Gyeongju for one night.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since the entire town is UNESCO, there are almost no skyscrapers. Ancient homes known as Hanok are either converted into hotel stays or new ones are constructed in that design to give a feeling of traditional wooden Korean houses.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hanok Stays in Gyeongju: <a href="https://booking.tpx.gr/zT6RMi7s" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Hwangnamguan Hanok Village</a>, <a href="https://booking.tpx.gr/AAAJtscj" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">HanokInn</a></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you want the comfort of hotels, then there are a few options.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hotels in Gyeongju: <a href="https://booking.tpx.gr/9XEK34om" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Hilton Gyeongju</a>, <a href="https://booking.tpx.gr/ETdm5NBe" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Aventa Hotel</a>&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="812" height="609" src="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Hwangnamguan-Hanok-Village-Hanok-stay-in-Gyeongju.jpg" alt="Hwangnamguan Hanok Village, Hanok stay in Gyeongju" class="wp-image-7596" srcset="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Hwangnamguan-Hanok-Village-Hanok-stay-in-Gyeongju.jpg 812w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Hwangnamguan-Hanok-Village-Hanok-stay-in-Gyeongju-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Hwangnamguan-Hanok-Village-Hanok-stay-in-Gyeongju-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Hwangnamguan-Hanok-Village-Hanok-stay-in-Gyeongju-585x439.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 812px) 100vw, 812px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Hwangnamguan Hanok Village, Hanok stay in Gyeongju</figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">FAQs ABOUT THINGS TO DO IN GYEONGJU (HOW TO REACH, TRAVEL AROUND AND MORE)</h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How to reach Gyeongju from Seoul and Busan?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>From Seoul</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By Train: From Seoul, the easiest and most convenient way to get to Gyeongju is via the KTX. Direct trains are available from Seoul Station every hour and take two hours. The KTX train station in Gyeongju is actually located outside of the city centre, so you’ll have to catch a taxi or take a bus to your accommodation. Uber and KakaoT are available. </p>

<p class="has-very-light-gray-to-cyan-bluish-gray-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Reserve KTX ticket: <a href="https://klook.tpx.gr/JnbXTnSY" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Seoul &#8211; Gyeongju KTX Train Ticket</a></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By Bus: Take an express bus from Seoul to Gyeongju. The trip takes 3 and a half hours. Reserving a seat online or directly after reaching the Express Bus Terminal is possible.</p>

<p class="has-very-light-gray-to-cyan-bluish-gray-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Reserve Bus Ticket: <a href="https://klook.tpx.gr/DjnwQNRJ">Seoul Express Bus Terminal to Gyeongju Bus Terminal bus</a></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>From Busan</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By Train: Again, the KTX is the best option as it runs every 30 minutes and takes about half an hour.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By Bus: Buses are available from Nopo Bus Terminal to Gyeongju. Some buses run every hour, and they take about 45 minutes.</p>

<p class="has-very-light-gray-to-cyan-bluish-gray-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Reserve KTX Ticket: <a href="https://klook.tpx.gr/HZBCDT8m" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Busan &#8211; Gyeongju KTX Train Ticket</a></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How to get around Gyeongju?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While the city is very walkable and most tourist attractions in Gyeongju are close to one another, some places, such as Bulguksa and Gyeongju Namsan Mountain, are far. The best way to get around is via public transportation. Pay by tapping your <a href="https://klook.tpx.gr/3UkaYhI1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">T-Money card</a> for hassle-free cashless payment!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Gyeongju Hanbok Experience</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Being the UNESCO Heritage Town, it only makes sense to don a Hanbok and walk the streets of Gyeongju. While Hanbok Photoshoot is popular in Gyeongbokgung Palace, Seoul, and Gamcheon Village, Busan, the charm of wearing it here is different. I felt a part of this town when I wore one here.</p>

<p class="has-blush-light-purple-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>✦ Pro Tip: Book <a href="https://klook.tpx.gr/fF3hfylW" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Gyeongju Hanbok Experience</a></strong></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Is Gyeongju worth visiting?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yes, being one of the most ancient towns and UNESCO heritage sites scattered all around the town, it is a must-visit while in South Korea.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Is one day in Gyeongju enough?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While a lot of visitors keep only one day to explore Gyeongju and shuttle from Seoul, I highly recommend spending at least one night in Gyeongju to explore the beautiful Hwangnidan Street and the many tourist sites that look beautiful in night lights.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Are Gyeongju Tours good?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yes, these day tours are guided and cover all the places of interest. However, they are a bit fast-paced since they want to cover all Gyeingju Highlights. If you are travelling solo, then this is a great way to travel around without having to figure out the buses, timings and stops.</p>

If you happen to have a long layover, it’s the perfect chance to step out and experience South Korea’s vibrant capital. This guide will walk you through exactly how to make the most of one day in Seoul.</strong></em></p>

<span id="more-7526"></span>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">South Korea is an amazing country, and its capital requires at least 4 days to explore its highlights. But sometimes, there isn&#8217;t enough time, or you want to hop to other cities while you’re there because you don’t know when you’ll be back!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For some, they want to explore the architecture and nature rather than being in the city.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">No matter what the reasons are, Seoul is going to be part of your South Korea itinerary, and it is best to embrace it with both arms.<br>I visited South Korea in the spring of 2025 and saw the best <a href="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/chasing-korea-cherry-blossoms/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cherry Blossoms in South Korea</a>, and visited <a href="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/one-day-in-busan/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Busan</a>, <a href="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/jinhae-cherry-blossom-festival/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jinhae</a>, <a href="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/dmz-tour-from-seoul/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DMZ</a>, <a href="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/things-to-do-in-gyeongju/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Gyeongju</a> and <a href="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/beomeosa-temple-stay-busan/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Beomeosa</a>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">ONE DAY IN SEOUL</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There is something for everyone in Seoul!</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Architecture and history</li>

<li>Malls and shopping</li>

<li>Cafe hopping</li>

<li>Skincare and beauty</li>

<li>BTS and K-drama</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Depending on where you’re inclined, the itinerary can be different for each one. But if you are someone like me who wants to experience a bit of everything, then this is my suggestion to pack in the most leg-breaking but immersive highlights of Seoul in 24 hours!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Note: Keep in mind that the Incheon airport to Seoul distance is one hour each way. Factor in the immigration, and you are down to 20 hours. Since you will rest for 5-6 hours, this is a 7 am to 11 pm itinerary.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let&#8217;s look at this in detail!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Cheonggyecheon Stream</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since most places in Seoul open at 9 am, start the morning with a stroll at Cheonggyecheon Stream.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once a natural stream, later an elevated highway, and now a lively waterfront, Cheonggyecheon has seen <a href="https://www.archdaily.com/1020945/re-naturalization-of-urban-waterways-the-case-study-of-cheonggye-stream-in-seoul-south-korea" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">decades of change</a>. Today, it’s a serene spot for a stroll, with restored bridges, historical artefacts, and rich biodiversity. In summer, it turns into an outdoor library, and during festivals, it hosts vibrant exhibits.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sit at one of the steps and enjoy the touch of the cold breeze on the face while the birds and fish go about their business. Or photograph yourself crossing the stream on those famous stones. Or simply notice people walk by or cycle by.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Get an Iced Americano (just like how Seoul-ites love it) to enjoy a peaceful morning and brace for the crazy day ahead!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Cheonggyecheon Stream timings:</strong> Always open</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Cheonggyecheon Stream Entrance fee:</strong> Free</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Namsangol Hanok Village</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While Bukchon Hanok Village has been extremely popular, especially on social media, the recent rowdy events have prompted locals to take action. Tourists are not allowed here between 5 pm and 10 am. Hence, the next best alternative is Namsangol Hanok Village, which is close to the next stop, Namsan Tower.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Designed as a cultural window into Korea’s past, the village brings together five beautifully restored hanok (traditional Korean houses), a serene pavilion, a landscaped garden, a performance stage, and a time capsule plaza.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Each hanok showcases life during the Joseon dynasty, offering not only a glimpse of traditional architecture but also serving as a venue for cultural and educational activities.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Guests can immerse themselves in hands-on experiences such as dressing in hanbok, folding hanji (Korean handmade paper), practising Korean calligraphy, participating in a tea ceremony, or attending a class on traditional etiquette and herbal medicine.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The village also comes alive with taekwondo demonstrations, music, and theatrical performances, creating a vibrant atmosphere that blends heritage with entertainment.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Namsangol Hanok Village timings:</strong> 9 am to 9 pm</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Namsangol Hanok Village Entrance fee:</strong> Free</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">N Seoul Tower</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Also known as Namsan Tower, it is one of the most popular places to visit, especially if you only have one day in Seoul. It is a communication tower with an observatory and one of the iconic landmarks in the city and the country.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The path, if you decide to walk all the way, is full of cherry blossom trees in bloom in spring and autumn colours in autumn. However, if you are short on time (and in this case you are), there is a cable car that takes visitors base of the observation tower. The view of Seoul from here is amazing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Beyond the views, the tower is famous for its “Locks of Love,” where couples leave padlocks as a symbol of their bond, creating a colourful display around the terraces. The tower also hosts exhibitions, restaurants, and cafes.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Visitors can also go to the top of the observation deck for even better views, souvenir shopping and a coffee experience.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Namsan Tower timings:</strong> 10 am to 11 pm. Note that the cable car also closes at 11 pm, so line up by 10:30 pm so that you get a slot.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Namsan cable car fee:</strong> 15,000 KRW per adult for a round trip</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Gyeongbokgung Palace&nbsp;</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Standing gracefully against the backdrop of Bugaksan Mountain, Gyeongbokgung Palace is the grandest of Seoul’s five royal palaces and a gateway into Korea’s dynastic past. Built in the 14th century, it gives a sneak peek into the Joseon Dynasty’s architecture &#8211; with beautiful sweeping courtyards, ornate gates, and intricate halls.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The daily changing of the guard ceremony adds a vibrant splash of colour and pageantry, while the palace grounds also house the National Palace Museum and the National Folk Museum, deepening the cultural experience.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s especially popular because visitors can immerse themselves in Korean culture while living out their K-drama dreams by dressing in a <em>hanbok </em>(traditional Korean dress). Strolling through the palace grounds in traditional attire feels like stepping into the scenes of a favourite drama.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Gyeongbokgung Palace timings:</strong> 9 am to 6 pm</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Myeongdong</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When it comes to Korean beauty and skincare, Seoul is at the centre of it, and nowhere is this more evident than in the bustling district of Myeongdong.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Often described as the mecca of K-beauty, Myeongdong is packed with skincare boutiques, cosmetic flagships, and wellness clinics offering everything from in-depth skin consultations to rejuvenating therapies. There are even specialised treatments like elaborate scalp care rituals that can run up to 15 steps &#8211; a testament to just how detailed and innovative Korean beauty truly is.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But Myeongdong isn’t just about facials and serums. A walk through its lively streets reveals a retail wonderland. Pop into Olive Young, Korea’s go-to beauty and lifestyle store, to stock up on the latest sheet masks, serums, and cult-favourite products. Step into the sprawling 12-story Daiso, where you can find everything from quirky household gadgets to adorable stationery.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And when you’re ready to take a break from shopping, Myeongdong’s famous street food market is waiting. Stalls line the streets with sizzling skewers, fluffy egg breads, tteokbokki, and sweet treats like hotteok, turning the shopping spree into a full sensory experience.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even the Myeongdong subway station is a bustling market in itself. There are many stalls selling affordable bags, clothes, winter wear and even K merchandise.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ideally, visitors should spend one full day in Myeongdong to get the best of everything!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Cafe hopping and dinner at Ikseondong</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you have seen Instagram reels and Tik-Toks of cafes in Seoul, then most probably they are situated in Ikseondong! This neighbourhood has some of the most creative cafes in terms of quirk factor, food, aesthetics and vibes. So even if you are in Seoul for one day, it’s worth spending a few hours here.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Each turn reveals a gem—like Cheong Su Dang bakery, where it “rains” indoors all day, creating a dreamy, poetic escape; Green Lab, a café designed like a tropical forest that transports you far from the city; and Jayeondo Sogeumppang (Salt Bread) &amp; Jayeondoga, a salt bread café so popular that trays vanish within minutes of being served. Add to that the Instagram-famous Onion Ikseon, set in a beautifully restored hanok, and you’ve got a lineup of must-visit spots perfect for café hopping.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As night falls, the neighbourhood shifts from cosy coffee stops to buzzing restaurants tucked inside traditional hanoks. From Korean comfort food and barbecue to pizza and chic fusion dining, Ikseondong offers endless options to cap off your day.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Han River Night Stroll</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After a day of sightseeing and a hearty Korean dinner, there’s nothing quite like winding down with a walk along the Han River.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The riverside parks come alive at night with joggers, cyclists, couples and families gathering here to take in the city lights shimmering on the water. The atmosphere is calm yet vibrant, giving a glimpse of how Seoulites relax after dark.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The highlight of the evening is the Banpo Bridge Moonlight Rainbow Fountain, wherein water jets arc gracefully from the bridge, illuminated by multicoloured lights that dance in sync with music.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Watching the fountain show feels both romantic and playful, as the rainbow hues reflect off the river and create a scene that’s magical. So if you&#8217;re planning to catch this stunning spectacle, aim for April through October, and check official websites!&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Each fountain performance is approximately 20 minutes long, and the schedule may be subject to change or cancellation due to poor weather conditions such as strong winds, heavy rain, or high turbidity in the river.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="681" src="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Banpo-Moonlight-Rainbow-Fountain-at-Han-River-Seoul-1024x681.jpg" alt="Banpo Moonlight Rainbow Fountain at Han River, Seoul" class="wp-image-7546" srcset="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Banpo-Moonlight-Rainbow-Fountain-at-Han-River-Seoul-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Banpo-Moonlight-Rainbow-Fountain-at-Han-River-Seoul-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Banpo-Moonlight-Rainbow-Fountain-at-Han-River-Seoul-768x511.jpg 768w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Banpo-Moonlight-Rainbow-Fountain-at-Han-River-Seoul-1536x1021.jpg 1536w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Banpo-Moonlight-Rainbow-Fountain-at-Han-River-Seoul-2048x1362.jpg 2048w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Banpo-Moonlight-Rainbow-Fountain-at-Han-River-Seoul-1170x778.jpg 1170w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Banpo Moonlight Rainbow Fountain at Han River, Seoul</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Late-night shopping at Dongdaemun Plaza</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you still have energy left after this leg-breaking one day in Seoul, and want to indulge in some retail therapy, then Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) is the place to be.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While DDP is an architectural landmark in Seoul, the area around the plaza transforms into a buzzing shopping district that stays alive well past midnight.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Towering malls and underground markets brim with fashion finds, from trendy streetwear to unique accessories, many sold at wholesale prices. The energy here is electric—bright lights, bustling crowds, and endless racks of the latest styles.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Doota Mall: A seven-story fashion hub remains open until 5 AM on Fridays and Saturdays.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Migliore Mall: A favourite among locals and visitors alike for fashion steals, Migliore opens from 10:30 AM until around 4:30 AM, some nights even as late as 5 AM.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Good Morning City: This massive complex covers over 700 shops across multiple floors and typically stays open until around 4 AM on select nights—combining shopping with entertainment like cinemas and saunas.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">DDP Fashion Mall: Located next to Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), this multi-floor wholesale fashion market operates from 8 PM to 5 AM on most days—ideal for night owls looking for the latest trends after dark.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Nyu Nyu: A wholesale accessory store offers a treasure trove of fashion items &#8211; jewellery, bags, clothing and seasonal accessories. The store’s towering walls and multiple levels mean you can spend quite some time getting lost in its vast, stylish offerings.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">WHERE TO STAY FOR ONE NIGHT IN SEOUL</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you find yourself on a whirlwind 24-hour layover in Seoul, chances are you’ll need a place to rest. The itinerary I’ve outlined conveniently wraps up in popular neighbourhoods, making it easy to hop back to Incheon Airport without hassle, either by taxi or Express Bus.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Hotels in Myeongdong</strong> &#8211; <a href="https://booking.tpx.gr/8z2L2iUR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">voco Myeongdong</a>, <a href="https://booking.tpx.gr/JFIXuxrR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Ibis Ambassador Myeongdong</a></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For those who prefer staying close to the terminal, there’s even the option of spending the night right at the airport. Terminal 1 has a basement-level sauna where you can grab a shower and stretch out on communal mats—a very Korean-style layover experience.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But if you’d rather have the privacy of your own room and the convenience of a free airport shuttle, several excellent <a href="https://agoda.tpx.gr/25qC5wDP" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">hotels near Incheon airport</a> combine comfort with easy access.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Hotel-room-with-N-Seoul-Tower-view-1024x768.jpg" alt="Hotel room with N Seoul Tower view" class="wp-image-7159" srcset="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Hotel-room-with-N-Seoul-Tower-view-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Hotel-room-with-N-Seoul-Tower-view-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Hotel-room-with-N-Seoul-Tower-view-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Hotel-room-with-N-Seoul-Tower-view-585x439.jpg 585w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Hotel-room-with-N-Seoul-Tower-view.jpg 1032w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Hotel room with N Seoul Tower view &#8211; voco Seoul Myeongdong</figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">FAQ&#8217;s ABOUT ONE DAY IN SEOUL</h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Can I leave Seoul Airport during a layover?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Absolutely—you can step out during a layover in Seoul, but there are a couple of things to keep in mind. First, Seoul has two airports: Incheon International Airport, which handles most international flights, and Gimpo Airport, which is closer to the city but mainly used for domestic routes. Chances are, you’ll be landing at Incheon.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The good news is that Incheon is one of the most traveller-friendly airports in the world, but logistics matter. You’ll need to pass through immigration both when exiting and re-entering, which can take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes each way, depending on crowds. On top of that, Seoul is about an hour from the airport. By the time you add everything up, you’ll spend around four hours just on transit and formalities.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So, unless you’ve got at least an 8-hour layover, it’s usually best to stay put at the airport and save the city for a longer visit.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="932" height="699" src="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/One-Day-in-Seoul.jpg" alt="One Day in Seoul" class="wp-image-7534" srcset="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/One-Day-in-Seoul.jpg 932w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/One-Day-in-Seoul-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/One-Day-in-Seoul-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/One-Day-in-Seoul-585x439.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 932px) 100vw, 932px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">One Day in Seoul</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How do you get to Seoul from Incheon?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you’ve got a layover and want to head into Seoul from Incheon, there are several easy ways to make the trip—each taking roughly an hour, depending on where you’re headed.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Airport Limousine Buses – Comfortable and convenient, these buses connect Incheon to major parts of Seoul. Routes are extensive, so you’ll have no trouble finding one that stops near your destination.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Subway &amp; AREX Train – The most budget-friendly option is to ride the subway via the Airport Railroad line. It connects directly to popular hubs like Seoul Station and Hongdae, and using the Seoul Subway app makes navigating a breeze. For a faster and more comfortable ride, consider the AREX Express Train, which runs non-stop between Incheon and Seoul Station.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Airport Transfers – If you’re travelling with kids, heavy luggage, or simply want a no-fuss option, pre-booking a transfer is the most convenient choice. Both shared shuttles and private vans are available, and they’ll take you straight from the terminal to your hotel without the hassle of navigating public transport.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Where to store luggage during a layover?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you need to find somewhere to store your luggage without lugging it around the whole day, Incheon has some good options! There are some storage options at Incheon, <a href="https://www.trazy.com/experience/detail/seoul-luggage-storage-hongdae" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">including this one</a>.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, the space there gets sold out pretty quickly. The other option is lockers at every subway station.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Alternatively, there is an online reservation where you can drop off the luggage at dedicated drop points. The service is slightly pricey but better than carrying it to the subway station and then knowing there is no space or your bag is too big for that storage. Check it <a href="https://www.tluggage.co.kr/eng_new" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">here</a>.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How much money for one day in Seoul?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For one day in Seoul, a solo traveller should budget around ₩30,000 to ₩50,000 (approximately $22 to $37 USD) for food and transport, not including accommodation or shopping.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A more realistic budget for a moderately paced day with meals at local restaurants, using public transport, and a small amount for snacks or souvenirs would be around ₩80,000 to ₩100,000 (approx. $60-$75 USD).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A hotel would easily cost another $100.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Do I need cash in Seoul?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yes! While most convenience stores, cabs and restaurants accept credit cards, you need a local top-up card, such as a T-money card or a climate card, and those can be topped up only with cash! Some street vendors and local markets also strictly deal in cash.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In subway markets, while shops accept credit cards, they will charge extra money for GST. So if you want to save money, bring cash.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">USD, Euro, Singapore dollars can easily be converted into Korean won at many currency conversion stores, banks and ATMs.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Seoul-seen-from-N-Seoul-Tower-Observatory-1024x768.jpg" alt="Seoul seen from N Seoul Tower Observatory" class="wp-image-7549" srcset="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Seoul-seen-from-N-Seoul-Tower-Observatory-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Seoul-seen-from-N-Seoul-Tower-Observatory-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Seoul-seen-from-N-Seoul-Tower-Observatory-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Seoul-seen-from-N-Seoul-Tower-Observatory-585x439.jpg 585w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Seoul-seen-from-N-Seoul-Tower-Observatory.jpg 1032w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Seoul seen from N Seoul Tower Observatory</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em><strong>Planning a DMZ tour from Seoul? Wondering how to go about it? Thinking and rethinking whether it is worth going to the Demilitarized zone in South Korea? I will put your mind to rest with this guide, answering all questions.</strong></em></p>

<span id="more-7449"></span>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Visiting the DMZ is one of the most popular <a href="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/one-day-in-seoul/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">things to do in Seoul</a>. While there are always questions in the discussion forum about whether the DMZ trip is worth the visit and the answers are 50-50.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I love places with history, and on my <a href="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/chasing-korea-cherry-blossoms/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korea Cherry Blossoms</a> trip last spring, I was very sure I wanted to go on a DMZ tour in South Korea.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In my personal opinion, if this is your first trip to South Korea, the DMZ day trip should be on your itinerary.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let’s dive in.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">HISTORY OF DMZ</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The origins of DMZ, officially known as the <strong>Korean Demilitarised Zone</strong>, can be traced back to the end of World War II, when Japan gave up control over the Korean Peninsula. In 1945, as a temporary measure, the United States and the Soviet Union agreed to divide Korea along the 38th parallel &#8211; a temporary solution.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By 1948, two separate states had emerged: the Republic of Korea (South Korea) in the south and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) in the north. Both governments asserted sovereignty over the entire peninsula, leading to heightened tensions.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="932" height="699" src="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/DMZ-Tour.jpg" alt="DMZ Tour" class="wp-image-7451" srcset="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/DMZ-Tour.jpg 932w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/DMZ-Tour-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/DMZ-Tour-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/DMZ-Tour-585x439.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 932px) 100vw, 932px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">DMZ Tour</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These tensions escalated into open conflict in 1950, when North Korea launched an invasion of the South, triggering the Korean War. The war continued until 1953, concluding not with a peace treaty but with the signing of an armistice agreement, leaving the two nations technically still at war.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As part of the <a href="https://www.unc.mil/History/1951-1953-Armistice-Negotiations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Armistice Agreement</a>, a new boundary was drawn between the two Koreas. This border extended approximately 248 kilometres and, unlike the original division at the 38th parallel, followed the natural contours of the landscape, cutting across the peninsula in a southwest-to-northeast direction.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This border was named the <strong>Military Demarcation Line</strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The area surrounding this border was designated as the Demilitarised Zone, a buffer intended to prevent further military confrontation.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On either side of this line, a buffer area was declared, about two kilometres in each direction. And it’s this four-kilometre-wide stretch of land the entire way along the border that is the DMZ.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">DMZ TOUR FROM SEOUL: A PERFECT ONE-DAY TRIP</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">DMZ is one of the most heavily militarised borders in the world. Both North and South Korea maintain a strong military presence on either side. Which is why visiting this historic site isn’t as simple as just showing up; rather, taking an official tour is mandatory. You cannot go solo for a DMZ tour, and there is no hack for it otherwise.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Visitors have to book a visit through various companies which provide pick-ups from designated areas. These tours are carefully organised to ensure visitor safety and follow all regulations. I booked through Get Your Guide along with the Red Suspension Bridge, and it was this one &#8211; <a href="https://getyourguide.tpx.gr/uYSUaDjI" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Seoul to DMZ Tour</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Alternatively, if you want to add Boat Voyage along with suspension bridge and DMZ, then go for this tour on Klook &#8211; <a href="https://klook.tpx.gr/i4q7kJFF" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">DMZ Adventure</a>.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="984" height="717" src="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Third-Inflitration-Tunnel_DMZ-Tour-from-Seoul.jpg" alt="Third Inflitration Tunnel_DMZ Tour from Seoul" class="wp-image-7455" srcset="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Third-Inflitration-Tunnel_DMZ-Tour-from-Seoul.jpg 984w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Third-Inflitration-Tunnel_DMZ-Tour-from-Seoul-300x219.jpg 300w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Third-Inflitration-Tunnel_DMZ-Tour-from-Seoul-768x560.jpg 768w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Third-Inflitration-Tunnel_DMZ-Tour-from-Seoul-585x426.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 984px) 100vw, 984px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Third Infiltration Tunnel_DMZ Tour from Seoul</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The entire tour is guided with history talks, photo sessions and anecdotes. If you think that you will catch some shut-eye on the commute from Seoul to DMZ, sorry to break it to you, but you can’t. The continuous commentary full of information will keep you glued to what the guide has to say.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The only way in is through an official tour company, accompanied by a registered guide.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">DMZ Tour Pick-up Points in Seoul</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most tours have a route, and visitors will be picked up from there. Most common pick-up points for DMZ tours from Seoul are&nbsp;</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>City Hall Station Exit 6.&nbsp;</li>

<li>Myeongdong Station Exit 9.&nbsp;</li>

<li>Hongik University Station Exit 3.</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some tours also offer pick-up from hotels. But the charges may be extra. Check before booking.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once the pick-up is complete, the guide will introduce himself/herself and the itinerary and rules. They will inform you of the best place for lunch and the best place to pick up souvenirs. They will instruct on how to identify the bus and the importance of arriving on time to adhere to the day’s schedule.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They will then provide a brief history of the DMZ, which I have outlined above.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Seoul to DMZ distance is 23 km, and it takes approximately 60-90 minutes to traverse the distance on the express highway, depending on the traffic.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">WHAT DOES THE DMZ TOUR FROM SEOUL COMPRISE?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you have chosen the suspension bridge, the tour will start at the DMZ and end at the suspension bridge. However, on the day of my visit, it was cloudy, and the guide informed us that the weather would be worse in the second half of the day and suggested we complete the suspension bridge first. So that is where we started.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Gamaksan Suspension Bridge, Paju</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="912" height="684" src="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Gamaksan-Suspension-Bridge-Paju.jpg" alt="Gamaksan Suspension Bridge, Paju" class="wp-image-7456" srcset="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Gamaksan-Suspension-Bridge-Paju.jpg 912w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Gamaksan-Suspension-Bridge-Paju-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Gamaksan-Suspension-Bridge-Paju-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Gamaksan-Suspension-Bridge-Paju-585x439.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 912px) 100vw, 912px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Gamaksan Suspension Bridge, Paju</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The official name of the bridge is “Gloucester Heroes Bridge” and is dedicated to the 1st Battalion Gloucester Regiment of the British Army, which fought in the Korean War, but unfortunately lost. The bridge commemorates the sacrifices they have made in a foreign land.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A short hike of 10 minutes along a laid-out trail among tall trees leads to the Gamaksan Suspension Bridge in Paju. Standing bright red against the beautiful green mountains, it is 150 meters long, which makes it the nation&#8217;s longest tower-less suspension bridge.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since it was already raining when we started the hike, it took us close to 20 minutes to reach the suspension bridge. We spent about 10 minutes clicking pictures before scurrying back down because a literal downpour had begun.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I wish I could cross the bridge and go to the other side. I would have if it wasn&#8217;t a rainy day. Hopefully again some other day when I can check out other places such as Ungye Falls.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Imjingak Peace Park</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="932" height="699" src="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Stop-at-Imjingak-Park-for-refreshments.jpg" alt="Stop at Imjingak Park for refreshments" class="wp-image-7459" srcset="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Stop-at-Imjingak-Park-for-refreshments.jpg 932w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Stop-at-Imjingak-Park-for-refreshments-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Stop-at-Imjingak-Park-for-refreshments-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Stop-at-Imjingak-Park-for-refreshments-585x439.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 932px) 100vw, 932px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Stop at Imjingak Park for refreshments</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first stop was Imjingak Peace Park, a civilian area near the DMZ.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the major highlights in the area is the Freedom Bridge, historically significant as the route taken by South Korean and UN soldiers returning from the North after the armistice. Nearby stands the Wall of Remembrance, etched with the names of those who lost their lives or were separated from loved ones during the Korean War.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Imjingak is also home to Dorasan Station, the northernmost railway station in South Korea.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The area features a small amusement park known as Pyeonghwa Land. Due to its proximity to the North Korean border, Imjingak draws numerous visitors, particularly those with personal ties to the war—many of whom were separated from their families and continue to visit in remembrance and hope.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We could not go down here because of the heavy rains, but we saw it from the windows of our bus.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Dora Observatory</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="912" height="684" src="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Dora-Observatory_DMZ-Tour-from-Seoul.jpg" alt="Dora Observatory_DMZ Tour from Seoul" class="wp-image-7450" srcset="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Dora-Observatory_DMZ-Tour-from-Seoul.jpg 912w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Dora-Observatory_DMZ-Tour-from-Seoul-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Dora-Observatory_DMZ-Tour-from-Seoul-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Dora-Observatory_DMZ-Tour-from-Seoul-585x439.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 912px) 100vw, 912px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Dora Observatory | DMZ Tour from Seoul</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our next stop was the Dora Observatory. En route, we passed through a military checkpoint where South Korean soldiers boarded the bus to verify our passports against the official passenger list.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Perched atop Mount Dora, the observatory provides sweeping views across the border into North Korea. From this vantage point, visitors can see notable landmarks such as the Kaesong Industrial Complex, the city of Kaesong, and the Military Demarcation Line that separates the two nations.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before making our way to the observation deck, we viewed a short documentary offering context about the Korean War and the significance of the DMZ. The observation deck previously used to be on the terrace in the open, but due to some incident, the terrace is off limits, and the telescopes are now behind a glass wall.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The observatory is equipped with telescopes that allow for a closer look into North Korean territory. With a bit of focus, it&#8217;s even possible to spot the North Korean soldiers and the flagpole standing tall across the border.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There is a cafe serving beverages and snacks here, so you can purchase something if hungry.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Note: Taking pictures of North Korea from the glass windows is strictly prohibited, and if caught, you may be fined. So just keep the camera away and enjoy the sights.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Third Tunnel</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="718" src="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Posing-with-soldier-mannequins-at-DMZ.jpg" alt="Posing with soldier mannequins at DMZ" class="wp-image-7453" srcset="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Posing-with-soldier-mannequins-at-DMZ.jpg 1024w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Posing-with-soldier-mannequins-at-DMZ-300x210.jpg 300w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Posing-with-soldier-mannequins-at-DMZ-768x539.jpg 768w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Posing-with-soldier-mannequins-at-DMZ-585x410.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Posing with soldier mannequins at DMZ</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Third Tunnel of Aggression is one of four known tunnels under the border between North Korea and South Korea, extending south of Panmunjom. It is believed to have been dug by North Korea as part of a plan for a surprise attack on South Korea and was discovered in 1978.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The tunnel is about 1.7 kilometres long, with a height and width of just 2 metres each, and it was dug straight through solid rock.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before going in here, we had to keep all their belongings in a safe &#8211; no bags, water bottles, or phones were allowed! A free safe and key will be provided to us where we had to lock our stuff. Then we passed through a metal detector and were given hard hats for safety.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I am claustrophobic, but I decided to give it a try. I have been to Cu Chi tunnels near <a href="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/10-reasons-visit-ho-chi-minh-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam</a> and wondered if this would be worse? Thankfully, it was not. I did not have to crawl at any point, so trust me, everyone can comfortably go in.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The only challenge here is the climb back up, which is steep, so be prepared to catch your breath. Thankfully, there are rest spots with benches and even a water fountain if you feel thirsty.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After coming out of that damp space, we felt a sigh of relief, picked up our stuff from the lockers and headed to photograph around.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Unification Village</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This was a pass-by on our tour. Daeseong-dong, also known as Unification Village, is a small, tightly regulated farming community located within the southern portion of the DMZ. Remarkably, it is the only civilian settlement permitted inside the zone, with residents living under strict rules and constant government oversight.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the most striking aspects of the village is its use of loudspeakers to broadcast music and messages into North Korea. This strange exchange creates an almost surreal atmosphere.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before leaving, we visited a small shop in the village selling DMZ-themed snacks and souvenirs &#8211; a lighthearted end to a tour that offered a profound glimpse into the lives of people living on the edge of history.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Lunch</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I am honestly not sure the place where we stopped for lunch. However, our guide informed us that this was the place to buy ginseng products without tax. So on one side of the complex, there was a small shopping mall comprising groceries, beverages, chocolates and ginseng products. And on the other side, there is a buffet restaurant serving Korean lunch.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since they had very less vegetarian options &#8211; only bibimbap, I skipped lunch and just had some snacks I had carried with me.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And with this, our DMZ Tour from Seoul had come to an end.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="912" height="684" src="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Photo-ops-near-Third-infiltration-tunnel.jpg" alt="Photo-ops near Third infiltration tunnel" class="wp-image-7452" srcset="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Photo-ops-near-Third-infiltration-tunnel.jpg 912w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Photo-ops-near-Third-infiltration-tunnel-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Photo-ops-near-Third-infiltration-tunnel-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Photo-ops-near-Third-infiltration-tunnel-585x439.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 912px) 100vw, 912px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo-ops near Third infiltration tunnel</figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">TIPS FOR DMZ TOUR FROM SEOUL</h2>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Dress appropriately: North Korean soldiers have been known to photograph visitors wearing casual or torn clothing—like ripped jeans—and use those images in propaganda to depict foreigners as impoverished or disorderly. To avoid being misrepresented, it&#8217;s best to dress neatly.</li>
</ul>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Carry your passport: This is non-negotiable. Without your passport, you won’t be allowed to enter the DMZ, so double-check before you leave.</li>
</ul>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Bring key medicines and warm clothing: If you rely on medication like an asthma inhaler, keep it on you at all times. The return walk from the Third Tunnel is both steep and cold, so a light jacket is highly recommended. While large bags must be stored in lockers, small essentials can be carried in your pockets.</li>
</ul>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT DMZ TOUR FROM SEOUL&nbsp;</h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Can tourists visit the DMZ?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yes, but only through guided tours. Independent access to most parts of the DMZ is not allowed due to strict security measures.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What do I need to bring for a DMZ tour?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You’ll need your passport for identification and entry. Comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended, as some parts of the tour involve walking or steep climbs.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Which is the best DMZ Tour from Seoul?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are many official tours. Choose the one that best suits what you want to do and your time. There are half-day tours that only offer a visit to Dora observatory and the Third Tunnel, and full-day ones that offer Gamaksan Suspension bridge, Gondola ride, Lake ride, etc. You can check Klook, Get Your Guide or Viator for a choice of your tour.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Is it safe to visit the DMZ?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yes, DMZ tours are well-regulated and designed with visitor safety in mind. However, it’s still an active military zone, so adhering to the tour guide’s instructions is crucial.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Is the Joint Security Area (JSA) open to visitors?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As of now, <a href="https://asianews.network/us-soldiers-north-korea-defection-raises-alarm-over-jsa-tour-security/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JSA tours are suspended</a> due to a security incident in 2023, when a U.S. soldier recently crossed into North Korea during a tour, prompting the United Nations Command to indefinitely suspend all tours in the area, including the JSA and surrounding Panmunjom village; this incident is considered a major security breach at the highly sensitive border between North and South Korea. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">FINAL THOUGHTS ABOUT DMZ TOUR FROM SEOUL</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="924" height="795" src="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/DMZ-Tour-Red-Suspension-Bridge-Tour.jpg" alt="DMZ Tour &amp; Red Suspension Bridge Tour" class="wp-image-7463" srcset="https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/DMZ-Tour-Red-Suspension-Bridge-Tour.jpg 924w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/DMZ-Tour-Red-Suspension-Bridge-Tour-300x258.jpg 300w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/DMZ-Tour-Red-Suspension-Bridge-Tour-768x661.jpg 768w, https://www.explorewithecokats.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/DMZ-Tour-Red-Suspension-Bridge-Tour-585x503.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 924px) 100vw, 924px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">DMZ Tour &amp; Red Suspension Bridge Tour</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Visiting the DMZ from Seoul was one of the most memorable parts of my trip, both intense and eye-opening. It’s one thing to read about the Korean War and the division of the peninsula, but quite another to stand at the edge of one of the world’s most fortified borders and feel the weight of it all.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It happened to be a rainy day, which only added to the sombre atmosphere as we moved through checkpoints and watched the landscape blur behind fogged-up windows. The most physically challenging part was the descent into the Third Infiltration Tunnel. I’m claustrophobic, and the low ceilings, narrow path, and damp air made me feel uneasy. Still, I managed to push through, and in the end, I’m really glad I did.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Every stop on the tour—from the Dora Observatory to the symbolic Unification Village—offered a deeper understanding of Korea’s divided past and its complicated present.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s hard to describe the feeling of standing so close to North Korea, separated only by a fence and years of conflict. More than just a historical tour, it was a glimpse into unresolved tension and cautious hope.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you’re in Seoul, I’d recommend making time for the DMZ. It’s not your typical tourist spot, but it leaves you with a lot to think about, and for me, that’s what travel should do.&nbsp;</p>
