Souvenirs are great reminders of the trip gone by. They take you back to the happy memories you created on a vacation. Whether it is a refrigerator magnet, outfits, a tea cup or a keychain, these affordable souvenirs are a great keepsake for the home and as a gift for your friends, family and colleagues. 

I love carrying a piece of the country I have visited and showing it off proudly. 

However, I was not prepared with the number of souvenir options on my Uzbekistan trip. Each city in Uzbekistan has something unique. The cities and the nearby villages have master craftsmen with unique options – such as the ceramists of Gijduvan and Rishtan, the blacksmiths of Bukhara and Chust, the weavers of Margilan, and the winemakers of Samarkand.

SOUVENIRS TO BUY FROM UZBEKISTAN | SHOPPING IN UZBEKISTAN

Let’s get straight to the options because they are too pretty not to shop!

Ceramics

The world of ceramics is especially beautiful in Uzbekistan. There is a sea of options to choose from, such as tea sets, planters, plates, mugs, bowls and everything in between! Which is why the answer to souvenirs to buy in Uzbekistan ends here!

Tourists will be spoilt for choice in design and colours as there are Aztec patterns, dot paint mandala patterns and many modern designs as well. The popular blue tiles of the Uzbekistan pattern are also seen on some of the Uzbek ceramics.

The shops generally pack it well with bubble wrap, but if you are wary, just ask them to add an extra layer to avoid breakage.

Cost of ceramics in Uzbekistan: Depending on what you buy, the price will vary. A tea cup and saucer set will approximately cost 60,000 som ($5) while plates or a tea pot + 4 cups + 4 saucer set will cost 2,00,000 som ($15).

Ikat fabrics and outfits

Ikat is a very important form of fabric used by everyone here. Ikat or Ikkat is a style of dyeing cloth to produce specific patterns. Ikat patterns are woven in cotton or silk and stitched into jackets or scarves.

Ikat fabrics are famously found and used in India, Indonesia and many South Asian countries. 

The jackets or shrugs are famously worn by women tourists in Bukhara. 

Cost of Ikat in Uzbekistan: Depending upon the type of fabric (cotton, silk or cotton blend) and whether it is a scarf, shrug or stole, the rate ranges from 20,000 som ($2) to 5,00,000 som ($40-50).

Uzbek caps (Doppa)

Doppa is the traditional cap, generally worn by men in Central Asian countries. The doppa is a square or round skullcap that generally has an intricate design or embroidery on it. The cap is made in different fabrics such as cotton, silk, and velvet.

Cost of Doppa in Uzbekistan: Depending on the fabric, Doppa cost ranges from 20,000 ($2) to 1,50,000 som ($15).

Bread Stamps

One of the most unique souvenirs to buy from Uzbekistan, bread stamps, locally known as “chekich” are stamps that make decorative patterns at the centre of bread. Each bread stamp is different depending on the baker, and the pattern signifies his signature. These patterns are not mere decorations; they carry deep cultural significance, often representing the sun, prosperity, and family unity. 

The bread stamps are made of walnut wood with iron pins arranged into floral patterns.

Cost of Bread Stamp: 40,000-60,000 som ($4-5).

Jewellery (Kashgar Boldak)

Uzbek jewellery has a lot of resemblance to Middle-East Asian jewellery, especially Afghan jewellery. Generally made of silver, the jewellery has precious or semi-precious stones dangling as charms.

Kashgar Boldak are special earrings crafted in Uzbekistan. These earrings are dome-shaped earrings with charms, and are made in silver or other metals.

Cost of Uzbek Jewellery: 1,00,000 – 7,00,000 ($7-60).

Wool Hats

Wool hats remind me of Russia, and Uzbekistan, being a former soviet country, there is still a lot of Soviet presence in various forms. Being a cold country, wool hats are manufactured and worn by locals here. If you come from a cold country and would love to wear a hat like this, it is a great utility item. 

Cost of Wool Hats: The price is 3,00,000 ($25) in case you want to buy. Shops also allow tourists to take pictures with the hats for a small charge of 2000-5000 ($0.2-0.4) som.

Suzani Blankets

Suzani is an embroidered tribal textile manufactured in Uzbekistan. This is certainly a souvenir from Uzbekistan that tourists can carry back home. Most suzanis are made of cream-coloured cotton/silk material and have brightly coloured floral patterns woven on the front side. 

While Suzani Blankets from Uzbekistan are the most famous textiles, there are smaller-sized textiles to choose from, such as cushion covers, table runners, mats and much more.

A suzani is a standard queen-size. Since the embroidery is handmade, the blanket easily takes up to 3-4 months by one master craftsman and a couple of helpers.  

Cost of Suzani in Uzbekistan: Table runners and cushion covers range 1,25,000 ($15), and blankets cost 10,00,000-20,00,000( $75-100) and could go up to $150-200 depending upon the intricacy of work and material used.

Tea

Tea is an important beverage in Uzbekistan, as most meals start and end with tea. The most popular is green tea followed by black tea. Generally, Uzbek tea is consumed without sugar and is served in a teapot with small bowls instead of cups. It is locally grown and has a very distinct flavour.

During the day and between meals, tea can be served as a “separate dish”, and house guests are always treated with tea.

There are a lot of varieties of teas, so it’s only fair to take back some!

Cost of Uzbek Tea: The dip packets range between 40,000 som – 80,000 ($3-5) while the brewing tea is also available on a weighing basis. That range from 50,000 – 1,50,000 som ($4-12) depending upon the type of tea and its weight. 

Dried fruits & nuts

I had the juiciest and sweetest fresh fruits here, so it makes sense to dry them to increase their shelf life. Dried fruits and nuts are sold in big bazaars as well as roadside markets. They are consumed during breakfast or sometimes served with tea. They are extremely delicious, and the variety is fantastic.

Just like in any other food market, you are allowed to taste them before buying. I tried very different types of nuts here (I don’t know each of their names,) but they were crunchy and yummy. Some of the must-try and buy dried nuts are apricots, hazelnuts, black raisins, figs, almonds, walnuts, pistachios, cashews, etc.

Cost of dried nuts in Uzbekistan Bazaars: Per kilogram range is 70,000 – 1,20,000 som ($5-12) depending upon which one you are buying.

Uzbek Dolls

Uzbek dolls dressed in national costumes have become a traditional Uzbekistan souvenir. They are generally made from straw, paper, cane, ceramics or wood and are light in weight as compared to the Babaychiki, which are made from ceramics and need careful handling. They can be used as a keychain or a toy for kids.

Cost of Uzbek dolls: 20,000 – 50,000 som ($1.5 – 4).

Embroidered Bags

Embroidered fabrics that are sewn into purses and bags are another Uzbekistan staple that you’ll see at shops all over the country. These small embroidered or crocheted bags act as great souvenirs to buy from Uzbekistan. Depending upon the budget, tourists may decide on the fabric of the bag, which ranges from cotton or silk or cotton-poly blend.

Cost of embroidered bags: 1,20,000 – 2,00,000 ($10-$20) for a medium-size.

Ceramic Figurines (Babaychiki)

Locally known as Babaychiki, they are smiling ceramic figurines in traditional attire that are available in different sizes. It is very common to see big ceramic figurines outside the shop doors as if they are guarding it. The small-sized ones are sold in souvenir shops in Uzbekistan bazaars.

Cost of Ceramic Figurines: The ceramic figurines cost around 30,000 som ($2.5) while the big ones cost around 1,75,000 – 2,00,000 som ($15-17).

Silk Carpets

Silk carpet manufacturing is huge, especially in the city of Khiva, Uzbekistan. Tourists can visit the silk carpet-making workshop and see the women weaving it. A handmade silk carpet easily takes anything between 6-12 months for completion as it is tied knot by knot. Which is why they are very expensive!

Cost of Silk carpets: $500 – 1000, depending upon size and intricacy of work.

Uzbek Rugs

Uzbek rugs are mainly made from camel wool, which is why they are very warm. Apart from rugs, home tapestries and door mats are also sold. The bazaars of Bukhara near Po-I-Kalyan square have many shops selling authentic handmade Uzbek rugs. The rugs are handmade by local women.

Cost of Uzbek rugs: $200 – 500, depending on size and intricacy of work.

Copper Plates

I saw copper plates being chiselled to form intricate designs. The craftsman painstakingly and carefully carves beautiful patterns and themes, which are one of the perfect souvenirs to buy from Uzbekistan. 

Because it is copper and because it is handmade,e the prices of copper plates are generally on the higher side.

Cost of copper plates: 1,00,000 – 2,00,000 som ($70-150) depending on the size and the amount of work done on the plate.

Carved wooden items

Traditional carved wooden items are found in all homes of Uzbekistan. The items range from carved plates, musical instruments, jewellery boxes, pieces of furniture and frames. The carvers use soft wood of trees such as elm, walnut, sycamore, juniper, mulberry, etc for making the items.

Cost of Uzbek Wooden Items: Depends on the type of wood, intricacy of carving and size of item. The range is 70,000 – 2,00,000 som ($5-150).

Samarkand Paper

One cannot go without buying Samarkand paper as an Uzbek souvenir. The paper is extremely historical, as the first people to master the techniques of making mulberry paper outside of China were the artisans of Samarkand. Mulberry tree bark, silk fibres and flower petals were used to make the paper,r which gave it smoothness, colour, and durability. 

Documents written on Samarkand paper have been preserved for centuries in museums around the world and are known to be in good condition even today. 

Products made from Samarkand paper include postcards, notebooks, masks, dolls, and bags.

Cost of Samarkand paper Items: Depends on the type of item, the range is 30,000 – 1,00,000 som ($2.5 – 8).

Samarkand Wine

Local alcohol is always a great choice for a souvenir. Samarkand wine is very famous thanks to the many vineyards and the juicy grapes grown there. 

While tourists can buy a bottle of wine from the alcohol shop, there is an option of visiting a vineyard and participating in wine tasting.

Uzbek Knife

If you want to buy a utility item which can double up as a souvenir, your search for what to buy in Uzbekistan ends here!

A traditional Uzbek knife has unique features with its straight and wide blade. It has excellent blade quality as it is hand-forged steel. The handles are also made by hand and may carry a special inscription. The handle can be made of wood or sometimes bones!

The knives won’t be a problem in customs as all handles carry a golden marking on them that is a sign of a knife bought for tourism purposes.

Other steel forged products include scissors, daggers and swords.

Cost of Uzbek knife: These knives are on the pricey side, and are in the range of 3,50,000 – 5,00,000 ($30-50).

Local Spices

The Central Asian country of Uzbekistan uses a lot of spices to give taste and aroma to their plov and other curries. These spices and powders are great souvenirs to carry back home if you plan on replicating the Uzbek dishes to get the authentic taste.

The best part? These spices are packed in wooden aubergine-designed jars, which are a great keepsake. Talk about 2 souvenirs in 1?

Bread and Baked Goodies

Uzbek bread is locally called ‘non’ or ‘lepeshka’, is sacred in the country. It is consumed with each meal and has a good shelf life of up to 5 days. In earlier times, it was said that Uzbek bread could last for years without getting spoiled. But it is best not to take such chances and buy the bread a day before leaving. This is probably one of the best souvenirs to buy in Uzbekistan, which can be enjoyed by the family.

Other baked goodies with better shelf life than bread are biscuits and cookies. These are great food souvenir options!

The good old keychains, fridge magnets, paintings and postcards

If you are a light traveller and do not want to carry back home very heavy items or have questions about the utility of the above-mentioned items, you can simply resort to the all-time favourite keychains, refrigerator magnets or postcards.

These are affordable keepsakes, do not take up a lot of space and are lightweight.

BEST PLACES TO SHOP FOR UZBEKISTAN SOUVENIRS

Shopping in Tashkent | Chorsu Bazaar

Chorsu Bazaar of Tashkent is famous for shopping. While I found it to be relatively underwhelming, the streets around the actual Chorsu Bazaar are bubbling with a lot of shopping options. 

Get down at the Chorsu metro station, and the exit leads to this lovely and bustling bazaar. The bazaar has everything that Uzbekistan souvenirs have to offer – carpets, fabrics, wooden items, Uzbek bread, dried fruits, nuts, etc.

After travelling across all the main cities, I found the cheapest souvenirs of Uzbekistan in Chorsu Bazaar, Tashkent. So much so that on my day of returning to India, I made time to go back here and spend the remaining som!

Another place where I found nice Uzbek jewellery and Ikat jackets was the madrassah inside the Hazrat Imam mosque. The madrassah is now converted into shops selling knick-knacks. Although the souvenirs were a bit on the pricier side, the collection here was amazing!

Shopping in Samarkand | Siyob Bazaar

Siyob Bazaar is like the Chorsu Bazaar of Samarkand. With a market selling fresh produce, dried nuts and Uzbek bread, the adjoining street is lined with souvenir shops selling ceramics, jewellery, fabrics, ceramic figurines, embroidered bags, etc.

All the important tourist sights that have a madrassah inside them are now converted into shops, and these can be seen in Shah-i-zinda, Gur-e-amir, Registan and Bibi-Khanym Mosque.

Shopping in Bukhara 

Like Samarkand, most monuments have a madrassah, and each of them houses souvenir shops. There are domes and streets full of such shops around the Po-i-kalyan complex.

The most beautiful souvenirs here are Uzbek rugs, metal locks, knives, paintings and copper plates.

There are workshops around the trading domes in Bukhara where tourists can watch the making of Ikat fabrics on handloom as well as suzani work.

Shopping in Khiva | Streets of Itchan Kala

Every street inside Itchan Kala is lined with souvenir shops. Maybe because there were too many shops outside every monument, it put me off! But that’s just me.

Khiva bazaars are famous for camel wool stuff such as socks, stoles and jackets. There is also a silk carpet-making workshop where the carpets can be bought.

SOUVENIRS TO BUY FROM UZBEKISTAN: TIPS & TRICKS

No matter where you travel, the rules of shopping and bargaining remain the same. Here are some of the tips and tricks to remember for souvenir shopping in Uzbekistan.

Buy Local

Make sure that the product you like and buy is locally made. Don’t buy something that you would get in your country for half the price. For me, ikat fabrics and suzani embroidery looked very similar to what we get in India. Ikat is easily available everywhere in India and suzani in the state of Kashmir, which is why I did not purchase it!

The bargain game

The shopkeepers know tourists are going to bargain, so the prices are already increased by 50%. So slash the prices by 50% and agree to pay 60-70% of the price. Negotiate hard by simply walking away. If the price is possible for them, they will call you back and give you a counteroffer. 

If you buy in bulk, they will give you a better discount.

Beware of customs restrictions

Uzbekistan has a strict law against the export of any kind of antique that is more than 50 years old. Hence, buy only those souvenirs that the government will allow you to take back home.

SUSTAINABLE TIPS FOR SHOPPING IN UZBEKISTAN

• Avoid buying leather bags and artefacts. Try to buy textile-based local products.
• Carry a bag while shopping and avoid plastic bags.
• Encourage shopkeepers to pack fragile items in a newspaper instead of bubble wrap.
• Be polite to the shop owners. In case you don’t buy anything from there, smile at them and say ‘Rahmat’ (thank you) before leaving.

Travelling through any new country is challenging because most visitors are unaware of the easy transportation. They end up hiring a car, which is not only expensive for time-consuming and fuel-guzzling.

If you are spending 10 days in Uzbekistan through Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva, it is best to travel in trains between them. 

I did a lot of research about the safety, booking, cleanliness and punctuality of trains in Uzbekistan. I also compared the cost of trains vs flights for internal country travel and came to the conclusion that trains are the best bet. Not to mention they are a sustainable mode of travel too!

In this blog I will share information about the types of trains in Uzbekistan, how to book, how early to book, luggage storage facility, food on board, toilets on board, how to check-in as well as the punctuality of trains.

TYPES OF TRAINS IN UZBEKISTAN

To start with, it is important to understand that three different types of trains are perfect for travelling by train in Uzbekistan: Sharq, Afrosiyob and Sleeper trains. 

For all fairness, let me tell you that I travelled by the Afrosiyob and sleeper train. I did not try Sharq. 

Afrosiyob route I travelled on: Tashkent – Samarkand and Samarkand to Bukhara

Sleeper train route I travelled on: Bukhara to Khiva

So let’s understand the types of trains in Uzbekistan and decide which is the best for you.

Sharq Train

Sharq is a day train that connects the cities of the Silk Road. Sharq means east, and it runs in the direction of Tashkent – Samarkand – Bukhara and vice versa. The Sharq train covers larger distances and is slower as it stops at smaller towns too. 

The train has reclining chairs and there are overhead compartments to place the luggage. The stewards on board help in placing your large luggage.

The Sharq train consists of 1 first-class, 7 economy-class cars, 1 SV coach, and a dining car. There are first-class and economy class seats. The first-class coaches are air-conditioned while the economy ones have windows that can be opened. 

The Sharq train offers:

• USB plugs in 1st class
• Free tea
• Vendors selling drinks and snacks

You can take the Sharq train to travel between the following popular routes:

Uzbekistan Sleeper Train – Passenger (Пассажирский)

The sleeper train is mainly used to travel long distances. And as the name suggests, it has sleeper coaches due to long hours of journey times. The sleeper train traverses from Tashkent to Khiva, covering a distance of 1000 kilometres in 14 hours. Mostly, locals prefer using this train due to the long hours.

However, tourists like me travel on sleeper trains on the Bukhara – Khiva route, which takes 6.5 hours. The train leaves late at night and reaches Khiva early the next morning, which saves a night of accommodation.

Uzbekistan sleeper trains have 3 types of coaches – sleeper class (Platzkartny) which is a shared compartment, coupe which is a 4 person cabin and SV which is a 2-person sleeper cabin. The cabins are air-conditioned while the sleeper coach is not. 

I travelled in the sleeper class in the Uzbekistan sleeper train in the summer months (end of August), and I had to open the windows otherwise it got stuffy. Since the train passed across the desert throughout the night, the desert dust got into the compartment and I kid you not, I coughed quite a bit during the night. Also, whenever the train stopped the air flow stopped and made it really uncomfortable.

The small luggage can be stored above the sleeping berths where there is dedicated space. While the larger bags can be stored inside the lower berths by lifting the seats. My 10-day trolley bag was too big to fit inside the lower berth so I let it sit in the space between the lower berths and that got really cramped. The Indian trains are much more spacious, even in the general compartment.

The train attendant gave a pillow, sheet and blanket to make the bed. But shut the lights off almost immediately after boarding from Bukhara. There were so lights otherwise and I had to make do using phone torch.

Overall, these green coloured sleeper trains are old and can’t be compared to the modern Afrosiyob. But they have a Soviet vibe to it and you are most likely to strike up a conversation with locals who prefer travelling in this compartment with their families. Other than the space and dust issues, it was a pretty good and comfortable experience!

The Sleeper train offers:

• Clean sheets and pillows 
• USB plugs only in 1st class 
• Free hot water in a big kettle near the toilets
• Vendors selling drinks and snacks (not at night) 

You can take the night train if you have more time on hand and want to travel between the following popular cities. I did not find a direct sleeper train between Tashkent and Khiva online, even though a lot of locals were travelling on that route.

Afrosiyob

Afrosiyob is the bullet train in Uzbekistan. I did not know those existed outside of Europe, South Korea, China and Japan, but I was pleasantly surprised!

If you have to travel by train in Uzbekistan I would highly suggest booking a seat well in advance in Afrosiyob. With speeds reaching 280-300 km an hour, a complimentary snack and stewards and stewardesses in every wagon to serve you on the train, the experience feels like sitting on a flight. 

There is ample space to stow your small bags that can go overhead as well as big luggage near your seats. There is also plenty of legroom on all seats. The sights from the train are great and will keep you busy looking out the window.

The Afrosiyob train has VIP class (premium 1st), Business Class (1st class), Economy class (2nd class) and a restaurant car. VIP seats are leather and arranged 2+1 across the car width.  Business class seats are fabric and arranged 2+1 across the cabin width.  Economy seats are fabric and 2+2 across the car width.

I rode on the Business class wagon, and it was extremely comfortable. I got a vegetarian snack (cupcake, croissant and coffee). The coach also shows if the washrooms are occupied and they are equipped for the specially abled persons too.

How to Book Tickets for a Train in Uzbekistan?

If you are travelling on a group tour, then obviously your train tickets would be taken care of. However, if you are a solo traveller in Uzbekistan, you can request your hotel or hostel to help you book the tickets.

But if you are someone like me – a travel ninja who wants to do everything by yourself then there is an easy way to do it. Online! The website has been revamped since I visited last year and is now in English and offers help and demonstration videos of how to go about booking tickets.

Always book your tickets directly with Uzbekistan Railways. This is the official website to book train in Uzbekistan. Do not book through any other third party websites. 

Important Note: Booking on Uzbekistan trains opens 45 days before! Afrosiyob tickets get sold out very quickly, so book as soon as possible.

These are the steps:

• Insert your from and to destinations.
• Add your date of travel
• Choose the train
• Login using Google, Facebook or OneID. I suggest to login using google (gmail) so that the ticket automatically comes on the email.
• Choose your wagon/coach – economy, business or VIP.
• Choose the seat(s). It also shows the number of seats remaining and the cost.
• Fill in the passenger details. Be mindful of all the details, such as date of birth and passport details, as these are checked before boarding.
• Continue for payment.
• Payment can be done using a Visa credit card and Apple Pay. The website remembers your details for your next booking. 
• After booking, you’ll receive an e-ticket by email. 
• You have to show the ticket when entering the railway station as well as while boarding the train and your coach.

How to get around Uzbekistan train stations

The train stations are nothing less than airports. Fewer crowds, fewer taxis and no chaos!

After getting dropped off at the drop point, you have to pass through station security. The QR code on the e-ticket will be scanned and it will be matched with your passport details manually by the security guards. All of the bags will also go through a scanner.

This may take a while and there may be queues to get inside. Which is why it is advised to reach atleast 30 minutes before the train departure.

After passing security, you will enter the station, which displays the platform on which your train is expected. The station security guards will help foreigners without you asking.

Once the train arrives, a steward will be waiting outside each coach/wagon. Once you identify your coach, you will have to produce your ticket once again to the steward. Then they guide you to your seat and may help with luggage (if you request it).

You have to climb 2 steps and once inside pass an automatic glass door to reach inside the seating area.

Luggage storage on a train in Uzbekistan

I did not get much information about luggage storage on any blog I read before going. Especially on the overnight sleeper train. I had assumed that there would be space on Afrosiyob but I struggled for info on other trains. I am sure most travellers travel with their trolley bags which need bigger space.

Luggage storage on Afrosiyob was a breeze. After entering the seating area, there is a huge space to store big bags right by the single seat window. There are overhead bins to store smaller bags or laptop bags.

Luggage storage on sleeper trains in passenger class can be done in the overhead compartment over the berth for small bags and inside the lower berth for medium bags. Trolley bags cannot fit into the berths and need to be kept near the berths. In coupe and SV coaches there is better space management for larger trolley bags.

Toilets in Trains of Uzbekistan

Toilets in Afrosiyob are very modern with a water basin at each end of the wagon/coach. Again, it is a lot like flights, just much bigger in space.

Toilets in sleeper trains are alright too. But I had to struggle to find a flush button as well as how to get the tap running! The hygiene level was not up to the mark on this.

I cannot comment on Sharq train toilets as I personally did not see them.

What to carry on a train in Uzbekistan?

If you are riding the Afrosiyob, you don’t need anything because there is toilet paper in the toilet and snacks served on the train. However, it is always a good idea to carry some snacks in case of emergencies.

In sleeper trains, if you are travelling from Bukhara to Khiva, then you are most probably going to board post dinner around 11 pm and won’t need anything. If you are travelling from Tashkent to Khiva, then it is a good idea to carry food.

Although in both cases, food coaches are there,e and vendors sell all sorts of snacks. 

I also recommend that you carry wet wipes and hand sanitiser.

Are there waiting areas or lounges in the train station?

Yes there are waiting areas on all stations. Tashkent station could get crowded pretty quickly due to the frequency of trains. But there is another waiting area on the first floor where nobody goes.

INTERNATIONAL TRAIN JOURNEY FROM UZBEKISTAN

Several international trains connect Uzbekistan to neighbouring countries. 

There is a train every week that connects Tashkent, Uzbekistan to Moscow, Russia. The distance is 2793km and it takes approximately 3 days.

Some trains connect Uzbekistan to Kazakhstan. Trains connect Tashkent to Almaty, which takes 17 hours and Tashkent to Shymkent, which takes 6.5 hours. The bookings can be done online.

SUSTAINABLE TIPS FOR TRAIN TRAVEL IN UZBEKISTAN

• Follow the rules and signs, especially while using the toilet.
• Do not throw trash from the windows of sleeper trains. There are dedicated bins near the toilet.
• Be humble to locals who will most definitely strike up a conversation with you and may offer food.
• Carry an e-ticket printout just in case your phone hangs up or doesn’t have battery or data.

Samarkand is Uzbekistan‘s second largest city, and is famous for being one of the most important Silk Road cities. It is also one of the oldest cities in the world, founded around the 7th century BC.

If someone asked me about my favorite city in Uzbekistan that offers stunning architecture of mosques and mausoleums, has an amazing city vibe and also vibrant bazaars, it would be Samarkand. I loved my visit to Tashkent, Bukhara and Khiva, but Samarkand stole the show and how! 

No wonder, poets and historians have described Samarkand as “The Pearl of the Eastern Muslim World”.

HISTORY OF SAMARKAND

Samarkand served as the capital of both the ancient Sogdian empire and the Timurid empire under Timur the Great (Tamerlane). Timur ascended to power in the late 14th century, and his empire extended from present-day Turkey and Iran to India. Despite Timur’s reputation as a formidable military leader, he displayed a profound interest in art, culture, and architecture.

Under Timur’s influence, Samarkand evolved into a hub of arts and Islamic education. He generously supported scholars, artists, and architects, giving rise to the distinctive Timurid architectural style.

Samarkand earned a reputation as one of the most enchanting cities in Central Asia. However, its golden era came to an end in 1500 when Uzbek nomadic warriors seized control, relocating the capital to Bukhara.

As a consequence, Samarkand experienced a decline, leading to the deterioration of its mausoleums, mosques, and madrassas. The city’s revival only occurred with the intervention of the Soviets, who linked Samarkand to the Trans Caspian railway and undertook the restoration of numerous Timurid monuments.

PRACTICAL TIPS FOR PLACES TO VISIT IN SAMARKAND

Getting to Samarkand

Samarkand is very well connected to Tashkent which is generally the first destination by international travelers in Uzbekistan. It is also very well connected to Bukhara. There are several trains each day from Tashkent and Bukhara to Samarkand. They are fast, comfortable, and generally run-on schedule. The trip from Tashkent to Samarkand takes less than three hours in Afrosiyob (bullet train) and less than two hours from Bukhara to Samarkand in Afrosiyob (bullet train).

The Samarkand International Airport also services many foreign destinations such as Moscow, Kuwait, Warsaw, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul, etc. The distance from the airport to the center of Samarkand is 8 km and one can get to any point of the city both by taxi and by city buses.

Getting around Samarkand

Tourists can use local taxis or app-based taxis – YandexGo. Similar to Uber, it is widely used in Uzbekistan. This is really useful as you don’t have to haggle with the taxi drivers regarding the fares and confusion regarding the destination – the accent makes it difficult to understand. An average taxi ride from anywhere in Samarkand is approximately 12,000 – 20,000 UZS ($1 – 1.6)

Samarkand also has yellow taxis operating on a shared taxi system meaning they will continue to pick up additional people as long as there are extra seats. There is a flat rate of 4,000 UZS ($0.32) for most trips around downtown and Registan.

Where to stay in Samarkand

Registan Hostel

Located very close to the Registan Square, Registan Hostel has air conditioned dorms and private rooms. It also features complimentary WiFi access and a common lounge, shared kitchen and airport transfers.

Muborak Hostel/Homestay

A family-run hostel, it has the feel of a guest house or AirBnB. It is 1 km from Bibi Khanum Mosque and can be easily reached by a short walk.

The rooms are clean and comfortable at Muborak Hostel. And the food buffet at breakfast and dinner is incredible too. The owner has a convenience store that sells baked goods (including Uzbek bread), snacks, water, cold drinks, etc.

Orient Star Hotel

The hotel features an outdoor swimming pool and poolside terrace that is located in the old part of the city. Orient Star Samarkand’s rooms include a minibar, TV and wi-fi. Breakfast is provided in the hotel’s restaurant, which serves both European and regional Uzbek cuisine.

Where to eat in Samarkand

Being a vegetarian, I was quite worried about getting vegetarian food in Uzbekistan. Thankfully, Samarkand has vegetarian food options across the city.

These are some of the vegetarian restaurants in Samarkand that I tried and liked.

Mone Cafe & Bakery

Mone Cafe is a modern resto-café with a menu that contains multiple vegetarian and vegan items. Items include salads, sides, breads, and fruit platters for dessert.

Samarkand Art House Cafe

Located right next to Bibi-Khanum Mosque, I stumbled across a large sign outside advertising a vegetarian menu. The restaurant also houses an arts & crafts shop that supports disadvantaged children when you purchase something. 

The restaurant has set up tables on a veranda and a few in the garden with a view of the mosque. It offers a good variety of vegetarian items that are vegan or can be made vegan. The tea collection is also nice and the quantity of drinks and food is good.

3 DAYS SAMARKAND ITINERARY

I took the 9:45 am Afrosiyob from Tashkent and reached Samarkand at 11:15am. I checked-in to my homestay and had lunch. I was ready to move out by 2pm but it was extremely hot. So, I ventured out at 4pm.

I walked through inner-city roads from my homestay and reached a big wooden door. One side of the door was open, and on peeping on the other side, it was such a contrast. Known as Tashkent Road or Islom Karimov Street, this road was pedestrian-friendly with a fancy boulevard and cafes & shops lined on both sides and an amazing vibe. I’m giving this information because everything is within walking distance from here.

 Day 2:

• Registan
• Gur-i-Amir
• Shah-i-Zinda

Day 3:

THINGS TO DO IN SAMARKAND, UZBEKISTAN

Explore Registan

The first place to visit in Samarkand is the grand ‘Registan’.

Registan is a big square with 3 majestic and distinctive madrasas (Islamic schools) – adorned with azure mosaics, beautiful arches, open backyards and vast, well-proportioned spaces.

The Registan, which translates to ‘Sandy Place’ in Tajik, was a public square where people gathered to hear royal proclamations, heralded by blasts on enormous copper pipes called dzharchis, and a place of public executions. In the medieval period, it was Samarkand’s commercial centre.

The madrasas now stand there inviting tourists to glare at their beautiful designs. Each madrasa has something intriguing inside them to keep the tourist glued!

 Tilya-Kori is the central madrasa. The two other madrasas in Registan are the Sherdor Madrasa on the right and the Ulugbek Madrasa on the left. Both have beautiful courtyards in the back with small rooms, which are now turned into souvenir shops.

Tilya-Kori Madrasa

In Uzbek, Tilya-Kori means “gilded”. It is the newest of the three madrasas in Registan Square.

It has the most striking interior area with a small mosque. The walls of the mosque are covered in intricate gold details and the ceiling is spectacular. It also has a small exhibition area where photos of Registan before restoration are displayed.

Ulugbek Madrasa

The oldest madrasa in Registan Square, Ulugbek Madrasa was built during the 15th century and quickly became a hub for Islamic scholarship, attracting some of the brightest minds of its time. It served as an educational institution where students learned about subjects ranging from theology and mathematics to astronomy and philosophy.

The madrasa played a pivotal role in advancing knowledge in various fields, and Ulugbek himself was a celebrated astronomer whose astronomical observations led to significant discoveries.

Inside the madrasa, visitors can explore the Ulugbek Museum, which is dedicated to the life and contributions of Ulugbek, who was not only a ruler but also a pioneering scientist. The museum houses a fascinating collection of astronomical instruments, manuscripts, and exhibits that showcase Ulugbek’s revolutionary work in astronomy.

Sherdor Madrasa

In Uzbek, Sherdor means “with lions”. The madrasa was constructed during the 17th century, under the reign of Yalangtush Bahadur, a descendant of the famous conqueror Tamerlane. This madrasa has a design that combines elements of Islamic architecture with Central Asian aesthetics. Its most striking feature is the twin tiger mosaics that flank the main portal.

There is an option of dressing up as a local at the Sherdor Madrasa where tourists can rent a traditional Uzbek outfit for the small fee of 5,000 UZS per person.

Registan Square Entry Fees: 50,000 UZS ($4)

Registan Square Timings: Open daily from April to October from 8 am to 7 pm and from November to March from 9 am until 5 pm.

Note: The entrance ticket is valid all day long, allowing you to come back at sunset and photograph the complex at various times of day depending on the sunlight direction. Tell the complex security guards if you’d like to reuse the ticket, otherwise they will tear your ticket and you won’t be able to reuse it.

Attend the Registan Square Light Show

After sunset, all three madrasas are lit up and look extremely beautiful. It is important to visit Registan square both in the day and night for this reason.

There is a Registan Square Light show at 9 pm daily where traditional music is played and lights dance on the madarasa. It is breathtaking. The Registan Light Show is free and there are steps where one can sit and enjoy the show.

Watching the night show from the inner court is also possible, but one needs to buy a ticket again. The cost is 60,000 UZS per person ($4.79).

I did not want to buy a ticket again and it was still amazing to watch it from the outer area.

Visit the Bibi-Khanym Mosque

Named after the wife of Timur the Great, Bibi Khanym Mosque was built by Amir Timur himself and he wanted to make it into the most magnificent mosque of the Islamic world. However, Timur got a bit too ambitious and pushed the building techniques to their limit. Due to the push structural problems were encountered and the mosque slowly started to deteriorate until an earthquake in 1897 left the building in ruins.

Bibi-Khanym Mosque is one of the looked forward attractions in Samarkand. Located on Tashkent Street in front of the Siyob Bazaar, the mosque has a beautiful courtyard. It was undergoing restoration when I visited so some of the areas were closed. Unfortunately, the dust due to the restoration was all over the place.

There were 2 workshops by local craftsmen inside – Copper plate making and wooden frames. Watching them craft beautiful items was the highlight of visiting the mosque.

Since I visited in the evening, we saw a beautiful sunset from the garden courtyard.

Shop till you Drop at Siyob Bazaar

The Siyob Bazaar is a local food market like the one in Chorsu Bazaar, Tashkent. It mainly sells bread, meat, fruits and dry fruits. The candy, fruit, and nut vendors will call out to you from their stalls, offering to taste their goods. Be sure to try the pistachio halva, it’s a sweet, chewy nougat that is absolutely delicious. But be sure to bargain.

The streets around Siyob Bazaar have been converted into souvenirs shops selling all sorts of memorabilia such ceramics, knives, purses, jewelry, ikkat shrugs, etc. as meant for locals, but there are a few things here to satisfy tourists as well. If you enjoy wandering through markets and enjoying the people watching, you’ll definitely get your fill of that here.

Fall in love with the lanes of Shah-i-Zinda, Samarkand

One of the best things to do in Samarkand is walking the lanes of Shah-i-Zinda.

Shah-i-Zinda is a mausoleum with stunning works of art. It is a necropolis that consists of rows of blue tombs and various mausoleums grouped along a narrow avenue. The vibrant blue tilework is prevalent throughout the complex, making it a photographer’s dream!

The name Shah-i-Zinda translates to “Tomb of the Living King” which refers to the holiest of the shrines, which is likely the grave of Qusam ibn-Abbas. He is famed for bringing Islam to this region in the 7th century. The mausoleums here were built over the periods of the 11th to the 19th centuries as Timur and Ulugbek buried their families and closest confidants here at later dates.

There exist multiple guidelines for visitors at the Shah-i-Zinda Mausoleum. These include dressing modestly as a sign of reverence for the deceased. Furthermore, it’s prohibited to take photos near the tombstones, sit on them, speak loudly, exhibit improper behaviour, place money on graves, or conduct animal sacrifices at the gravesites.

Get lost in the Gur-e-Amir Complex

The Gur-e-Amir Complex is a striking madrasah that houses the tombs of Amir Temur and his beloved descendants. Which is why visiting it is one of the most popular things to do in Samarkand.

The building was originally meant to be an Islamic school at the direction of Temur’s grandson, Muhammad Sultan. But after he died suddenly in 1403, Temur ordered that the complex be changed to a mausoleum. Temur was originally meant to be buried in his hometown of Shakhrisabz, but his body was laid to rest at the Gur-e Amir, as well as his other infamous grandson, Ulugbek. 

The outer embellishment of the mausoleum showcases a combination of blue, turquoise, and white tiles arranged in geometrical and epigraphic patterns, set against a backdrop of terracotta bricks.

The interior of the mausoleum is truly breathtaking! Geometric panels dazzle with star-shaped motifs, while niches adorned with papier-mâché stalactites painted in hues of blue and gold add to their splendour. 

Amir Temur’s jade stone grave is in the centre of the grandiose room that houses all of the tombs. Outside is a lovely courtyard and garden, with a spectacular arched gate at the entryway.

Timings of Gur-e-amir: The Gur-e-Amir mausoleum is open daily from April to October from 8.00 am until 7.00 pm and from November to March from 9.00 am until 5.00 pm.

Learn about astronomy at the Ulugh Beg Observatory

One of the most popular things to do in Samarkand is visiting the Ulugh Beg Observatory.

The observatory comprises a three-story cylindrical structure enclosing three massive astronomical instruments. Among these, the primary instrument is a towering meridian arc, reaching a monumental height of 40 meters, employed for measuring the elevation angles of celestial bodies. 

Initially erected in 1428-1429 by the renowned astronomer Ulugh Beg, the Ulugh Beg Observatory stood as one of the prominent observatories in the Islamic world at that time. Tragically, it fell victim to destruction in 1449 at the hands of religious extremists, remaining lost for many years until its rediscovery in 1908.

Within its walls, remarkable discoveries were made. Ulugh Beg’s calculations revealed that the duration of a stellar year approximated 365 days, 6 hours, 10 minutes, and 8 seconds, an accuracy only slightly deviating from modern calculations by less than a minute.

Today, the only remnants of the observatory consist of the sextant, an instrument utilized for determining midday, sheltered under a protective roof. Peering down into the sizable aperture, visitors can catch a glimpse of the substantial section below. 

Adjacent to it, stands a modest museum offering insights into Ulugh Beg’s legacy and the groundbreaking astronomical work conducted within the observatory during the 15th century.

Visit the President’s Tomb

The President’s Tomb provides a convenient stop on your return journey from the Ulugh Beg Observatory. Here, you can marvel at both the Hazrati Khizr Mosque and the final resting place of the former president.

Islam Karimov, the former president of Uzbekistan, governed the Uzbek SSR in 1990 before proclaiming Uzbekistan’s independence on September 1, 1991. Following this, he secured a landslide victory in the inaugural general election held in December of the same year. Karimov continued to win subsequent re-elections by a significant margin, often surpassing 90% of the vote, until his passing in 2016.

Similar to other historic and religious landmarks in Samarkand, the mosque and adjoining tomb showcase breathtaking architecture and rich historical significance. Visitors may have the opportunity to ascend the minaret upon payment of the entrance fee, affording panoramic views of the courtyard below. While photography is permitted in this area, capturing images of the actual president’s tomb is prohibited.

PLACES TO VISIT NEAR SAMARKAND

Shakhrisabz

Shakhrisabz is 85 km away from Samarkand and a perfect one day trip. Shakhrisabz is an important city in the history of Uzbekistan as Amir Temur was born in the neighboring village of Hodja-Ilgar and made Shakhrisabz his residence. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has several interesting architectural sites to explore.

The drive from Samarkand to Shakhrisabz crosses the Aman-Kutan Gorge and Takhta-Karacha Mountain Pass. On the way, tourists can make a stop to take a view at Teshiktosh (Stone with hole). The film “Apachen” (1973) was shot on this location – an area that looks incredibly like the American Southwest. 

Drive to Shakhrisabz and exploring various places would take about 3 hours. The tour will cover the Mausoleum of Jakhongir in Dor-us Saodat Memorial Complex, the remains of Ak Saray Palace and Kok Gumbaz Mosque.

Entry fees for each of these places varies between 10,000 – 15,000 UZS ($0.8-1.2). The car rental would be extra depending upon the car you choose.

FAQs FOR THINGS TO DO IN SAMARKAND

Is a guide required for Samarkand sightseeing?

Samarkand is full of UNESCO World Heritage sites, and one can understand the history well if there is a guide with you. Although tourists can hire local guides at each tourist destination who offer services in many languages, I suggest that having a guide on the entire trip is beneficial as one can visit some offbeat spots. That being said, I hired a guide only for Registan Square and paid 1,00,000 UZS ($8) and it was worth it! Is Samarkand safe?

Yes! Samarkand is a very safe city, even if you’re traveling as a woman by yourself. I found women drivers in app based taxis late at night and that was cherry on the cake!

The Uzbeks are very friendly and have no bad intentions whatsoever. Be prepared to take loads of photos with locals. Being an Indian, they wanted to strike a conversation with me with the few Hindi words they knew. They are huge Bollywood fans and know many actors’ names.

Best time to visit Samarkand?

Samarkand can be visited all year round but I’d say that early autumn (September and October) and spring (April and May) would be the best time to visit the city. 

Summers (June till August) are usually very hot in Uzbekistan. I went in August end and the afternoons were too hot and I am someone who lives in India. It was too much for me as well and I did not venture out between 2-4pm.

Winters (December till February) are also a good time if you want to avoid the crowds. If you’re lucky, you might get to see the stunning architecture coated in snow.

How many days to spend in Samarkand?

2 full days are enough to cover the highlights and the offbeat places in Samarkand.

SUSTAINABLE TIPS FOR THINGS TO DO IN SAMARKAND

• Carry your own refillable water bottle. Avoid purchasing PET water bottles unless absolutely necessary.
• Do not trash the heritage site with wrappers and uneaten food. Use designated areas and the right-colored bins for disposing of waste.
• Be mindful of all the signs and follow them respectfully, especially in mosques and mausoleums.
• Respect the ancient structures of mosques and other structures by not sitting on them.
• Respect the places which prohibit photography.
• Do not write on the pillars and walls of archaeological sites and monuments.

While planning my trip to Uzbekistan and even after coming back, I was constantly asked one question only.

“How will you manage in a meat heavy diet country?” or “Did you find vegetarian food in Uzbekistan”?

To be honest, I was skeptical, in spite of reading many articles on finding vegetarian food in Uzbekistan. To be safe, I carried a few snacks and dehydrated food from home. But how I was proved wrong!

I stayed in Uzbekistan for 10 days covering Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva and found vegetarian options everywhere, albeit, a few!

Although the traditional food of Uzbekistan and Uzbekistan famous food consists of meat, the country has opened its arms to international tourism and their dietary preferences. In Tashkent city, which functions as a cultural and economic hub in the entire Central Asia, there are restaurants catering to global cuisine.

VEGETARIAN FOOD IN UZBEKISTAN

Here’s a perfect guide for what to eat in Uzbekistan and best Uzbekistan food to try. All of it Vegetarian! Most of these options are available across the country and are must try!

Uzbek Bread

The most traditional Uzbek food is ‘Non’ (also known as lepeshka). It is a round and flat bread and is particularly sacred in Uzbek culture. 

Baked in a tandoor (clay oven), the bread is soft yet crispy. It is so sacred that bread is torn by hand before eating and never with a knife or fork. 

The delicious fragrance reverberates through small streets of each city and you can be sure there is a small bread making factory tucked behind some closed doors.

This bread is served with each meal and acts like a side dish.

Manti

Similar to dumplings, Manti is another traditional Uzbek dish. Also known as Uzbek steamed dumplings, they are small dumplings stuffed with juicy meat & onion filling, then steamed in a special metal multi-layered Uzbek steaming pot, called kaskan. 

Vegetarian Manti has two options. First is the Pumpkin, Onion & Butter Filling wherein, the pumpkin is used as the main ingredient and is cubed or sliced with the onion, then mixed with the butter and spices. Another option is Potato & Onion Filling. Cubed potato is mixed with sliced onion, butter and spices. To add extra flavour, herbs such as green onion, dill and parsley are added as well. Paprika and/or red chilli powder are also sometimes added to the seasoning for an extra kick of flavour.

Manti is a main course in Uzbek tea houses and markets and is commonly served or sold from a large dish, smothered in tomato sauce.

If ordered as a side dish it is served with sour cream/yoghurt, a homemade tomato sauce, thinly sliced onion rings seasoned with some vinegar, salt and pepper and some freshly chopped herbs such as dill or parsley.

Gumma 

One of the most popular street foods in Uzbekistan, Gumma is like a fried dumpling. Most often they are fried, but in Uzbek homes they are baked. They are seasoned with parsley, pepper and salt and usually served with tomato sauce. 

The vegetarian version has potatoes or pumpkin in them.

Soups

Uzbek soups are thick in consistency and made rich with fresh vegetables such as carrot, beet, onion, greens and various spices. It usually has meat broth but the vegetarian version is made without it.

Lentil soup and pumpkin sour is quite popular with the locals and is available even in summer. They are filling when consumed with a bread basket. It is not spicy and it is only lightly peppered.

Uzbek Salads

Salads are quite commonly served at breakfast or sometimes even as side dishes. The salad that’s most typical in entire Uzbekistan and even in Central Asia is a tomato, cucumber and onion salad known as ‘Achchik-Chuchuk’. Served fresh as it is, sometimes they have dressing of mayonnaise or olive oil and fresh herbs like dill leaves. The salad tastes delicious because of the special Yusupov tomatoes which have a unique taste that grows in this area.

Another most popular salad in Uzbekistan is radish salad with pomegranate seeds known as ‘Anor va Turup salati’. Margilan radish is cut into thin strips and pomegranate seeds are added. 

Another popular salad is Aubergine Salad locally known as ‘Baklajon Salat’. Aubergine is available in abundance in Uzbekistan and there are many dishes that use them including this vegetarian aubergine salad. This salad has fried aubergine added with raw red pepper, green pepper, cucumbers, spring onions and tomatoes all tossed together in fresh green herbs and vinegar, salt, sesame seeds and soy sauce. Tempered coriander seeds and lightly cooked garlic in oil are also added.

Chickpea and turnip salad is also sometimes served at breakfast in hotels. Overnight soaked and cooked chickpeas are added to raw turnips and carrots that are cut in small cube size. Sour cream, salt and dill are added to this salad. This salad is locally known as ‘Sabzavot Va Nukhotli Gazak’.

Shivit Oshi

Shivit Oshi is a unique Uzbekistani dish of bright, green noodles and can be found almost exclusively in the city of Khiva. The Shivit Oshi are coloured green with dill infusion. This green dough is then cooked and covered with a hearty stew of potatoes and carrots. It is served with tangy yoghurt.

Shivit Oshi is like Uzbek pasta that is extremely healthy and delicious. This is a paradise for vegetarian food in Uzbekistan.

Laghman noodles

Laghman is a Central Asian dish made of meat, vegetables and pulled noodles. Uzbek Laghman is packed with many unique flavours and spices. It is something between a hearty soup and a light pasta. It is available in restaurants in most big cities of Uzbekistan and if requested is made without the meat.

Make sure to give instructions not to use meat broth in the soup, and this is a very filling meal.

Somsa

A puff pastry very similar to Samosa in India, it is triangular in shape. Introduced to India by Central Asian traders, Somsa has meat and vegetable filling and is baked instead of being fried like the Samosa. 

Somsa is a popular street food in Uzbekistan and can be found at most local markets and street vendors. Thankfully it is available in vegetarian filling. Vegetarian Somsa either has potato and onion filling or pumpkin filling.

Fruits

Uzbekistan is home to a diverse array of fruits that are both delicious and nutritious. Some of the most popular fruits grown in the country include melon, watermelon, apricots, peaches, pomegranate, apples, grapes and figs. Fruits and dry fruits are generally offered in breakfast. 

I had the sweetest and juiciest melons and peaches here everyday for breakfast and they should not be missed.

Having gone through the vegetarian food in Uzbekistan, it is now time to check out the restaurants and cafes that serve vegetarian food. Here’s a comprehensive list of vegetarian restaurants in Uzbekistan.

Vegetarian Restaurants in Tashkent

Navaat Art Restaurant 

Navat was the first vegetarian option that popped up. It had great reviews and a diverse menu which is why I tried the food here. 

Navaat offers a modern and vegetarian twist to many traditional Uzbek dishes. There are soups, salads, pizza and great options for a drink. It also has an outdoor bar and open club area which plays funky music at night.

Caravan

Caravan is another vegetarian restaurant in Tashkent that offers delicious traditional food, rustic decor, and live music. They have great manti (Central Asian dumplings ), salads, and Uzbek wine.

Eco cafe Tashkent

Suggested by the hostel where I was staying, I ordered food through Yandex Food App and got it delivered within 30 minutes. They have great vegan and vegetarian bowl options that are wholesome and healthy.

Cafe 1991

If you are looking for an upscale dining space then head over to Cafe 1991. The cafe offers Uzbek and Lebanese cuisine and has top notch dining reviews. From the ambience, service, and quality of food and beverages everything is amazing. It even features a separate vegetarian menu where the majority of the dishes are also vegan.

The best part is most staff can speak English so you discuss your food preferences and allergies with them.

The cafe is open till 1 am in case you want to dine in till late.

Vegetarian Restaurants in Bukhara

Chalet

A beautiful cafe surrounded by greenery, Chalet is hard to miss as it is located at the beginning of Mekhtar Anbar street. It has an Italian restaurant offering a variety of vegetarian and vegan dishes.

Bella Italia

Another Italian restaurant with a wide variety of vegetarian dishes and a few vegan dishes. Pizza, pasta, salads and soups are clearly marked vegetarian and are delicious. The staff speak English.

Ayvan

Aesthetically beautiful, Ayvan was on the top list of places to eat in Bukhara. The restaurant is located inside Lyabi House hotel, an upscale property in Old Bukhara.

Ayvan has a fantastic selection of alcohol, vegetarian as well as vegan options. The staff has an English speaking waiter and they recommend food based on your likes. There is an outdoor as well as indoor sitting area.

Vegetarian Restaurants in Samarkand

Mone Cafe & Bakery

Mone Cafe is a modern resto-café with a menu that contains multiple vegetarian and vegan items. Items include salads, sides, breads, and fruit platters for dessert.

Samarkand Art House Cafe

Located right next to Bibi-Khanum Mosque, I stumbled across a large sign outside advertising a vegetarian menu. The restaurant also houses an arts & crafts shop that supports disadvantaged children when you purchase something. 

The restaurant has set up tables on a veranda and a few in the garden with a view of the mosque. It offers a good variety of vegetarian items that are vegan or can be made vegan. The tea collection is also nice and the quantity of drinks and food is good.

Vegetarian Restaurants in Khiva

Tapas Restaurant

A rooftop restaurant with a view of Itchan Kala, this restaurant has many vegetarian options. I ordered the Shivit Oshi noodles and tried the lentil soup. Since it was so soothing, I ordered a bowl of plain rice to go with it.

Terresa Cafe

Located in front of the Kunha Ark courtyard, this cafe is hard to miss. It gives a fantastic view of Kalta Minor minaret and a few other monuments from their terrace. 

It is popular for drinks and food at sunset. While the food was not that great they have an entire page of vegetarian dishes. I tried their pumpkin soup, shivit oshi noodles and a veg platter.

FAQs ABOUT VEGETARIAN FOOD IN UZBEKISTAN

Do hotels serve vegetarian food?

Hotels, AirBnBs and Guesthouses in Uzbekistan generally do not have a restaurant. However, they serve breakfast. For vegetarian travellers in Uzbekistan breakfast might be the best meal of the day. In almost all hotels and guesthouses, breakfast is a hearty spread of bread, salads, fruits, nuts, yoghurt, chocolates and coffee. 

Can you survive on street food?

Yes! There are few but good street food options in Uzbekistan. Bread, Somsa and Fruits are quite filling and easily available everywhere. They are also affordable and perfect finger food to eat while exploring.

How to find vegetarian food in Uzbekistan?

If you have an internet connection (and I highly recommend you to have one), download the Happy Cow app. Based on the current location, it will show you the possible vegetarian and vegan restaurants in the area. The app will show the distance, menu, photos and even reviews left by visitors.

Being a sustainable traveller I am always looking for ways to use public transport while travelling in a new city and country. Metro, trams, trains have a special place in my heart as they are light on the pocket and environment.

Although some may argue about the rush hour crowds, there is an advantage to being a tourist, and crowds can be easily avoided by travelling in off hours. 

Visiting the Tashkent Metro Stations was on my list of best things to do in Uzbekistan, as it is one of the best Tashkent attractions. 

Designed during the Cold War as a subterranean fortress, the Tashkent Metro is now a treasure trove of palatial architecture, chandelier-lit halls, and murals that echo centuries of history.

Nearly every metro station in Tashkent captivates visitors with its distinctive architectural charm and artistic allure. From stations resembling opulent ballrooms adorned with grand chandeliers to others evoking the ambience of a sci-fi film set, each one adds a fascinating layer to the city’s underground narrative.

Since I spent 2 days in Tashkent, I dedicated approximately 90 minutes to the metro ride to hop on and hop off across the Uzbekistan (Blue) line. After riding the Tashkent metro, this is the perfect guide to the incredible Tashkent Metro Stations that you need!

The Tashkent metro runs through the city’s central area. It is easily recognised by the ‘M’ symbol at its entrance.

ALL ABOUT METRO TASHKENT 

Established in 1977, the Tashkent Metro stands as the oldest subway system in Central Asia and holds the seventh position among the 13 metro networks within the former Soviet Union. Comprising four lines that serve 50 stations, each Tashkent Metro station is uniquely themed. 

The metro stations were initially conceived as a comprehensive city-wide nuclear shelter, which is why the Uzbek government classified the entire metro as a military facility, leading to a prolonged prohibition on photography that lasted for decades.

Thankfully, the metro Tashkent ban on photography was lifted in June 2018, and visitors can now capture the beauty of these stations.

HISTORY OF TASHKENT METRO STATIONS

The Tashkent metro was the first subway in Central Asia. During the Soviet era, a city could only have a public rail system if it had a population of 1 million. 

In the 1960s Tashkent experienced a surge in population growth and the first metro line was completed and opened in 1977. A second line was added in 1991, the third one in 2001 and forth is undergoing.

The metro is currently over 70 kilometers long with 50 stations spread across the 4 metro lines. Most of the metro trains are still the same ones used during Soviet times.

RIDING THE METRO TASHKENT – PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Tashkent Metro Map

First things first. In order to ride the metro, you need the map. This is the latest map that is uploaded on the official metro website. So have a look before going and keep it handy.

The metro in Tashkent now has 50 stations connected by 4 metro lines, and each line has a different colour on the map.

Chilanzar Line (Red Line)

Uzbekistan Line (Blue Line) 

Yunusabad Line (Green Line)

Sergeli line (Yellow Line)

The red line is called the Chilanzar Line, and it was the very first line of the Tashkent Metro. It has 17 stations and connects the south of Tashkent to the center and the western area of the city. 

Uzbekiston Line is the blue line on the map and was the metro’s second line to be opened. It has 11 stations and connects the northeastern and eastern areas of Tashkent to the city center. It has one of the most beautiful metro stations in the city.

Yunusabad Line is the green line, which was inaugurated in 2001 and currently has 8 stations connecting the north of Tashkent to the city center. 

The Sergeli line is yellow line and is a new metro line that opened in August 2020 and it has 14 stations which unites the city’s aboveground and underground lines into a single, integrated circuit. The work on this line is still ongoing. The extended system anticipates a daily ridership of up to 750,000 passengers.

Every station has a hall consisting of one central platform, and one metro line runs on both sides of this platform in opposite directions.

The next stations along the line are indicated on the walls and panels next to the railroad.

There are 4 interchange stations – Pakhtakor/ Alisher Navoir, Amir Temur Avenue/ Yunus Rajabi, Mingurik/Oybek and Dustlik/ Technopark – where visitors can easily walk from one hall to another to take a different line. 

Opening hours of the Tashkent Metro

The Tashkent Metro is open every day from 5 am until midnight. Peak hours are from 7.30 am to 9.30 am and from 5:30 pm to 7.30 pm. 

The best time to visit the metro in Tashkent is during the early afternoon, between 10 am and 12 noon or between 1 pm to 4 pm. 

On weekdays, the average time between two trains is about 5 minutes until 9 pm. After 9 pm and on weekends and holidays, you can catch a train every 10 minutes. 

Tashkent Metro Tickets

Visitors need to buy a one-time ticket. The flat rate is UZS 1400 ($0.11), no matter which station you get on and off. The tickets can be bought outside each metro station in a window named ‘kassa’. Most stations have a metro map.

I had the map downloaded, and I pointed to the station I wanted to get to, so it was easy for the issuer to understand. 

Tourists can pay in cash. Locals use online rechargeable transport cards. The ticket has a unique QR code which is needed to enter the station as it opens the entry barrier.

The ticket is valid for 60 minutes, so one can get off at a platform, explore the station, take photos and get on the next train. 

Since you don’t exit the station, you can hop on and hop off the train to explore the Tashkent metro stations.

Security at Metro stations

Upon entering the metro station, you have to pass through the entry barrier using the QR code on your ticket. Just before that, your bags will be checked by officers in uniform. Laptop bags or big purses will be manually checked by opening. Once cleared, you enter the station via escalator or staircase.

On the subway platform, there will be security personnel. They will gather near the metro once the train is about to arrive and leave. 

If the station is relatively empty, they may come up and chat with you if you are taking photos. It happened at 2 stations with me, and both the personnel could identify my nationality just by looking at me!

Is the Tashkent Metro safe?

From QR-coded entry to the presence of security personnel and CCTV, riding the metro in Tashkent is extremely safe. 

There are at least 2 security guards in green uniform at every station and more at interchange stations who are keeping a close eye on what’s happening on the platforms. If you ever feel unsafe, you can talk to them. Most of them can understand English. 

Pickpocketing is unheard of in the metro, but it’s always better to keep your money, valuables and passport safely.

BEST TASHKENT METRO STATIONS TO VISIT

While every metro station is beautiful in its way, if you are a tourist, you will probably have only a little time. My suggestion is to explore the blue and red lines, which are the oldest and have the most beautiful metro stations in Tashkent.

I made the best of my time by exploring and travelling on the metro. I rode the Uzbekistan (Blue) Line as I was staying in that area. I was able to walk and photograph 7 of them in 90 minutes. This also depends on the train frequency and how much time you are taking to explore the stations.

I started at Kosmonavtlar and went up to Beruni, getting off at each station.

Kosmonavtlar

Kosmonavtlar is a stunning space-programme-themed station of the Metro Tashkent. A memorial is constructed right outside the Kosmonavtlar metro station in honour of Uzbekistan’s (previously Soviet Union) Cosmonauts such as Yuri Gagarin and Valentina Tereshkova, the first man and woman in space.

The area around the memorial is huge, with a walking trail where locals come for an evening stroll.

The architecture inside the metro station has a very ‘space’ kind of vibe. The vibrant ceramic walls transition from blue to black, mirroring the Earth’s atmosphere, while the dangling glass on the ceiling mimics the Milky Way. The entire colour scheme gives the feeling of gazing at the Milky Way on a clear night.

There are circular panels on the station walls that have murals featuring the same cosmonauts.

Uzbekistan

The light fixtures in the station look like giant bulbs of cotton plants, and the shadow created by them on the ceiling makes the entire station look very beautiful. The bulbous lights pay tribute to the country’s cotton industry. 

There are also blue glass mosaics on the walls that look like waves in the sea.

This station is generally empty, and few locals get of which makes it very peaceful.

Pakhtakor

Paxtakor or Pakhtakor translates to ‘cotton picker’, and the walls of this station are covered in traditional-looking blue and yellow mosaics that depict blooming cotton plants.

Uzbekistan is one of the world’s leading producers of cotton, and the industry plays an important role in the history of the Uzbek economy. 

Alishner Navoiy

The Alisher Navoiy station, with its beautiful blue domes and their intricate golden patterns, resembles the mosques and madrassas of Uzbekistan built during the Silk Road period, an Islamic architectural representation.

Alisher Navoiy is the interchange station between the Uzbekiston (Blue) Line and Chilanzar (Red) Line and is named after a 15th-century Uzbek poet and important writer during the Silk Road.

Gafur Gulom

Named in honour of G’afur G’ulom, a renowned Uzbek poet, writer, and translator, he is celebrated as one of the most impactful literary figures of the 20th century, particularly for his notable works like Shum Bola and Yodgor.

During the Soviet-German war against Nazi Germany, Gʻafur Gʻulom dedicated himself to chronicling the events of the war, and his poems gained immense popularity among the Uzbek people.

The station is embellished with columns crafted from turquoise granite, and the walls feature artistic ceramics portraying faces and visual representations inspired by G’ulom’s poetic creations.

Chorsu

Named after the Chorsu Bazaar, the most happening shopping bazaar in Tashkent, Chorsu means four streams. The design on the walls and ceiling in Chorsu has four coloured streams.

This station is not very well decorated, but one of the most crowded as locals and tourists come here for shopping.

Tinchlik

The station is dedicated to Tinchlink, a small town where marble is mined in Uzbekistan. 

Mukhamadjon R. and A. Kayumov were the designers behind Tinchlik Station, which boasts elaborate embellishments such as stained glass walls, marble columns adorned with illuminating lamps, and crystal chandeliers suspended from the ceiling.

Beruniy

Beruniy station is named after the poet Al-Biruni, a polymath from Karakalpakstan in Uzbekistan.

What makes this station special is the white arched ceiling with geometrical patterns and golden crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceiling.

SUSTAINABLE TIPS FOR VISITING TASHKENT METRO STATIONS

• Using the metro itself is the first step towards sustainability, so hurray and pat yourself on the back!
• Do not trash the metro station with waste. Use designated areas and bins for disposing of waste.
• Be mindful of all the signs and follow them respectfully, especially dedicated seats for handicapped or pregnant women on the train.

Arriving in Tashkent

By Flight

Islam Karimov Tashkent International Airport is located in Tashkent city and most visitors are likely to fly here from other countries. Uzbekistan Airways is probably the flight you will fly.

By Shared Taxis

Tashkent can be reached by train and taxi from neighbouring countries such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Marshrutka or marshrutnoe taksi or routed taxicab, are shared taxis that connect Shymkent in Kazakhstan, Osh in Kyrgyzstan and Khujand in Tajikistan to Tashkent. These shared taxis drop visitors at border where after passport verification, they change into another taxi of the destination country.

By Train

Uzbekistan is well connected by train network across the country. There are trains that run from major cities within Uzbekistan such as Samarkand, Bukhara and Urgench. There is a train that connects Kazakhstan to Tashkent as well.

Best time to visit Tashkent

The best time to visit Tashkent is during fall months September- October or spring months April-May. Summer months (June to August) are extremely hot and uncomfortable. Walking around the historical sights becomes actually difficult and uncomfortable. And I am saying this even though I live in an Indian city that experiences 40 degrees summer for 3 months straight. The roads look deserted and everything kind of shuts down between 1-4pm.

Winter (December to February) months are extremely cold with chilly winds and it may snow.

How to get around in Tashkent | Tashkent Metro

Tashkent Metro is a convenient and affordable way to get around the city. One way ticket costs 1400 UZS ($0.15). The metro network is spread across the city and one can easily navigate it if you have the map handy. The instructions are spoken in Uzbek, however it is easy to understand the next stop. 

How to get around Tashkent in Yandex (taxi)

Taxis are incredibly cheap in Tashkent. While one can hail a cab but making the driver understand your destination could be a challenge. App based taxi called Yandex is the best rescue for this. On an average, a taxi ride would cost 25000 – 30000 UZS ($2 – 2.4) anywhere to get to Tashkent tourist attractions. The cars are clean with boot (in case you have luggage) and the drivers are very polite.

This is also the best way to get from Tashkent airport to the city centre as the local taxis will charge 2-3 times the money than Yandex. In case you have less luggage, best is to use the Yandex app rather than requesting your hotel for pick-up.

Tip: Download the Yandex Go app and complete the registration and phone verification in your home country in case you are relying on wi-fi.

Tashkent offers a wide choice of hostels for budget travellers to top-end hotels for those who want to indulge in luxury. There are also homestays and airbnb in Tashkent. 

Hostels in Tashkent

Art Hostel

I heard about this hostel from a lot of backpackers and they had great reviews about it. So I decided to stay here and it lived up to its promise. Tucked in a small alley in a residential area, it is a peaceful place. Metro station is 500 metres aways and there are a couple of banks and convenience stores near the hostel so it’s easy to get around. The hostel is clean and cosy.

They serve breakfast with a good variety of vegetarian options. Only disappointment was that they didn’t accept card payments. Cash is acceptable in SOM or USD.

Located close to Art Hostel, I promised myself to stay here the next time. This 3-star hotel features a fitness centre, a restaurant and a bar. The premises also has an ATM. The accommodation features a concierge service, luggage storage space and currency exchange for guests.

As international flights can be taxing on the body, I feel it is best to relax in Tashkent for a day or even two and get oriented towards the Uzbek culture, the breads and blue tiled architecture. Sightseeing in Tashkent can be quite rewarding as the city is full of gems catering to all kinds of travellers.

While the places to visit in Tashkent mentioned in this blog need 2 days, the highlights can be completed in one day.  

Hazrat Imam Complex

Situated in the heart of Tashkent, the Hazrat Imam Complex, also known as the Hast-Imam Ensemble or Khast Imam, is a great introduction to Uzbek heritage and architecture.

The complex is home to many beautiful architectural monuments, such as the Barak Khan Madrasah, the Tilla Sheikh Mosque and the mausoleum of Saint Abu Bakr Kaffal Shashi.

Each Madrasah has blue tiles arches at the entrance that opens into a square full of souvenir shops. While you may be tempted to buy the souvenirs here, being your first stop, I will suggest you to hold on.

The highlight of the Hazrat Imam Complex is the Muyi Muborak Library, which houses a library with oriental manuscripts and the Uthman Koran, which is claimed to be the world’s oldest Koran. The Hazrat Imam Complex is very peaceful throughout the day which makes it one of the best Tashkent attractions for history enthusiasts and architecture lovers.

Hazrat Imam Complex entrance fee: While the entrance to the complex is free, tourists have to pay 30,000 UZS (US$3) for entry to the library.

Amir Timur Square

One of the most popular places to visit in Tashkent amongst the tourists and locals, Amir Timur Square offers many things to do in Tashkent.

The square is actually a park that has a statue of Amir Timur on horseback. Timur or Tamerlane was a Turco-Mongol conqueror who founded the Timurid Empire in and around modern-day Afghanistan, Iran, and Central Asia, becoming the first ruler of the Timurid dynasty. He is Uzbekistan’s hero and there are a lot of places dedicated to him and his family around the entire country.

The square is surrounded by hotels, cafes, government buildings and monuments. The square especially comes alive with fountains in the gardens and people coming here for a walk and indulging in local increams.

The best part is that there is an underground Tashkent Metro which takes you directly to the square! Get out of Amir Temur metro station and walk to Amir Timur Square.  

Amir Timur Museum

Right across the Amir Timur Square is the Amir Timur Museum. Since I was walking aimlessly, I did not notice that there was a museum here but I got attracted to the beautiful exterior. 

I went in and was pleasantly surprised with the grandeur of the golden-domed ceiling. The museum has paintings and belongings of Amir Temur, a copy of the Quran and small-scale models of the important mosques around Uzbekistan.

Amir Timur Museum Timings: Tuesday to Sunday from 9 am until 5 pm. Closed on Mondays.

Amir Timur entrance fee: 20000 UZS ($2). Another 10000 UZS if you want to take photos.

Chorsu Bazaar

Local’s favourite Bazaar is now one of the major Tashkent attractions for its beautiful circular blue dome and buying local products. The bazaar is an indoor shopping mall with two storeys.

The outside of the dome sells fresh fruits, vegetables, ceramics and clothes. The ground floor stores majorly sells raw meat, cheeses and spices. While the first floor store sells dried fruits of all kinds!

Around Chorsu Bazaar are many streets and alleys selling jewellery, clothes, breads and souvenirs which ultimately leads to the main dome. The bazaar starts from the Chorsu Metro station up until the actual Chorsu Bazaar dome.

Chorsu Bazaar is one of the most affordable places in the entire country to buy souvenirs such as ceramics, painting, scarfs, stoles, jewellery, refrigerator magnets etc. 

Kukeldash Madrasah & Dzuma Mosque

Kukeldash Madrasah and Dzuma Mosque are right outside the Chorsu Bazaar and the Chorsu Metro. Just walk between the outdoor stalls in the direction of Beruniy Street and you will see the largest madrasah and one of the most famous historical places in Tashkent.

Kukeldash is a beautiful example of Islamic architecture and worth a visit during Tashkent Sightseeing.

Like all madrasahs in Uzbekistan, Kukeldash was a school imparting Islamic education but over a period of time, got converted to caravanserai for merchants, later a fortress of the Kokand rulers and even as a place of execution.

The most interesting thing about Kukeldash Madrasah is that it has survived several earthquakes and has repeatedly been repaired and restored. 

The Dzuma Mosque is right next to the Kukeldash Madrasah and worth a quick stop to admire the architecture.

Hazrat Imam Complex entrance fee: Tourists are allowed to enter the courtyard of the madrasah with a small entrance fee of 10000 UZS ($0.82).

Minor Mosque

The newest mosque in Tashkent is a strikingly beautiful monument. Built in 2014 on the banks of the Ankhor Canal, it is also known as Snow Mosque as it is made of white marble.

Tashkent TV Tower

One of the most popular Tashkent attractions is the TV tower. At a height of 375 metres, Tashkent Tower is the 11th tallest tower in the world. It can be seen from most tall buildings around the city.

There is a garden around the tower and visitors are allowed to go till the 6th floor which is the observation deck of the tower to enjoy the panoramic views of Tashkent city. There is also a restaurant on the 7th floor where visitors can have a meal overlooking the city views.

Tashkent TV Tower Timings: Monday to Sunday from 10 am until 8 pm. 

Tashkent TV Tower entrance fee: 40000 UZS ($3.25)

Note: Visitors wanting to go to the observation deck need to show their passport.

Tashkent Metro Stations

One of the best Tashkent attractions as well as one of offbeat things to do in Tashkent is the hop-on and hop-off at Metro stations. Almost every station has its own unique architectural features and artistic elements.

Some stations look like ballrooms with huge chandeliers hanging from the ceiling while others look like heritage sites.

There are 50 stations across 4 different lines. I took the Blue line and explored the following stations in an hour.

– Kosmonavtlar

– Uzbekistan

– Pakhtakor

– Gofur Gulom

– Tinchlik

I bought a ticket for 1400 UZS ($0.15) that is valid for one hour. I hopped on and off at each station to photograph it and got on the next upcoming train. I was in absolute awe of the beautiful stations and how nicely it was maintained.

Broadway Street

Broadway Street is a pedestrian street that unites the two most important squares of Tashkent: Amir Temur Square and Independence Square.

Originally known as Sailkogh street, the Broadway Boulevard is a very popular place for the locals as well as tourists to enjoy an evening walk or enjoy a cup of coffee.

The street also has many vendors selling street food, souvenirs, and art stalls.

State Museum of History

The State Museum of History of Uzbekistan gives a broad idea about Uzbekistan’s history. This museum has 2 floors with a range of exhibits showing the history of Uzbekistan spanning 2 millenia.

It’s built in the form of a cube,a modern take on blending a Soviet approach with oriental decorative patterns. 

State Museum of History timing : The museum is open daily, except on Mondays, from 10 am until 6 pm. 

State Museum of History Entrance fee: The entrance fee is 10000 UZS ($0.81) and another 15000 UZS ($1.2) for photography.

Lal Bahadur Shastri Monument

Being an Indian citizen, I had to visit and pay my respects to the former Prime Minister of India who died in Tashkent in 1966. A small statue, dedicated to him has been erected in central part of Tashkent.

The Government has named a road in his memory.

TASHKENT CITY TOURS | TASHKENT WALKING TOURS

There are several guided walking tours in Tashkent. There are several combinations to choose different routes and places that cover most of Tashkent attractions. The tours generally last for 2.5 – 3 hours and are conducted by an English speaking guide. Charges are $35 for a group of 3 people and $45 for 4-6 people.

I did not go on a walking tour and explored all the places by myself.

WHERE TO EAT IN TASHKENT | TASHKENT RESTAURANTS

Tashkent being the modern capital of Uzbekistan and a very important city in Central Asia, there are endless food options. From Uzbek cuisine to Korean, Mediterranean to Indian, Continental to Mexican there are options for everything. 

Uzbek cuisine as well as the restaurants serving food in Tashkent are meat heavy. If you are a vegetarian or vegan like me and wondering if there is vegetarian food in Uzbekistan, then read on!

I used an app called Happy Cow which helped me find a vegetarian or vegan restaurant in the area with directions, menu and phone numbers. It was a huge relief and I relied on that app heavily here.

Here are some of the restaurants I tried while in Tashkent.

Navaat Art Restaurant 

Navat was the first vegetarian option that popped up. It had great reviews and a diverse menu which is why I tried the food here. 

Navat offers a modern and vegetarian twist to many traditional Uzbek dishes. There are soups, salads, pizza and great options for a drink. It also has an outdoor bar and open club area which plays funky music at night.

Caravan

Caravan is another vegetarian restaurant in Tashkent that offers delicious traditional food, rustic decor, and live music. They have great manti (Central Asian dumplings ), salads, and Uzbek wine.

Eco cafe Tashkent

Suggested by the hostel where I was staying, I ordered food through Yandex Food App and got it delivered within 30 minutes. They have great vegan and vegetarian bowl options that are wholesome and healthy.

Cafe 1991

If you are looking for an upscale dining space then head over to Cafe 1991. The cafe offers Uzbek and Lebanese cuisine and has top notch dining reviews. From the ambience, service, and quality of food and beverages everything is amazing. It even features a separate vegetarian menu where the majority of the dishes are also vegan.

The best part is most staff can speak English so you discuss your food preferences and allergies with them.

The cafe is open till 1 am in case you want to dine in till late.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT UZBEKISTAN

Is Tashkent worth visiting?

Yes! While Tashkent is only used as a transit to visit other heritage cities in Uzbekistan, there are many Tashkent attractions such as historical monuments, incredible architecture, gardens and delicious food. The accommodation, local travel and food is extremely affordable. 

With a daily average travel budget of around $30-75 per day, travellers can enjoy all that the country has to offer without breaking their savings. 

Is travel to Tashkent safe?

Yes! Tashkent is considered a safe destination for tourists. Incidents of violence against tourists are rare. There are police in every tourist site and a helpline number specially for tourists which makes it very reassuring. I met many solo women travellers throughout my journey and everyone said they felt safe at all times.

I took a late night cab once or twice and did not ever feel unsafe.

I also found women taxi drivers in Tashkent making me feel absolutely safe.

How many days to spend in Tashkent?

While there are many things to do in Tashkent and places to visit in Tashkent, the city deserves atleast a 2 days’ visit. 

Do you need a guide in Tashkent?

There are guided walking tours in Tashkent that one may register to and join. There are English and Russian speaking guides available for singular monuments too around the ticketing area. 

Do you need Registration slips from hotels and hostels?

I read about this before going that there are random checks at immigration for registration slips. The registration slip is basically a paper given by the hostel/hotel claiming that you stayed with them. It has your name, date of stay and passport number.

I diligently collected it from all my accommodations but I was not asked to produce it at the immigration.

SUSTAINABLE TIPS FOR VISITING TASHKENT ATTRACTIONS

• Carry your own refillable water bottle. Avoid purchasing PET water bottles unless absolutely necessary.
• Do not trash the heritage site with wrappers and uneaten food. Use designated areas and right-colored bins for disposing of waste.
• Be mindful of all the signs and follow them respectfully especially in mosques and mausoleums.
• Respect the ancient structures of mosques and other structures by not sitting on them.
• Respect the places which prohibit photography.
• Do not write on the pillars and walls of archeological sites and monuments.

With the country opening its doors to tourism thanks to the flexible visa laws and great transportation across the country as well as the neighboring countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan), Uzbekistan is a wonderful travel destination. TRAVEL IN UZBEKISTAN : THE COMPLETE GUIDE

UZBEKISTAN VISA

The citizens of 76 countries including the United States, China, and India have been granted the right to receive an electronic entry visa for a period of 30 days.

The citizens of the European Union, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Arab Emirates, Israel, and many more countries can travel to Uzbekistan visa-free for a period of 30 days.

If your country of citizenship isn’t on any list, you’ll need to apply for a visa at the Uzbek Embassy.

Costs for Uzbekistan E-Visa 

Uzbekistan e-visa cost is 20 USD and has to be paid with a valid Visa credit card. Double entry costs 35 USD and multiple entry costs 50 USD.

After filling basic information, one has to upload the soft copy of passport and photograph. You also have to fill in dates of travel to Uzbekistan. And then make a payment.

The visa usually comes in 3-4 working days. The visa is valid for 30 days. 

Apply for a visa at least a month in advance and check for entry dates (as per your flight details) as the visa will carry the date you applied on and is valid for 3 months.

For example, if you are traveling on 15th September and applied for a visa 2 months prior, then your visa date validity will be 15 July to 15 October. You can travel anytime during these 3 months and your visa will be valid for 30 dates from your date of arrival. 

In many cases there are issues with dates so check thoroughly. For any issues you may write to mail@e-visa.gov.uz and you will get a response soon.

FLIGHTS TO UZBEKISTAN

Flights to Uzbekistan are quite affordable from India, with round-way flights from Delhi to Tashkent starting at around $400 – $550 (INR 32,000 – 45000) offered by Uzbekistan Airways, Indigo Airlines and Air India. 

There are some great transit options from other Indian cities to Samarkand via UAE. Look for the best flight options here – Flights to Tashkent

Visitors will likely fly into Islam Karimov Tashkent International Airport. There are many carriers that fly from many countries to Tashkent. Their national airlines – Uzbekistan Airlines has direct flights to Delhi in India as well other neighboring countries including Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, etc.

How to get from Tashkent Airport to the city?

The airport is about 5 kilometers from the center of the capital and it’s best to take a taxi to your hotel. The time duration is approximately 10-15 minutes depending upon the location of your hotel.

More affordable and quickest option is to hail an app-based taxi called YandexGo. They are extremely affordable and generally do not crib about big bags in luggage. It costs approximately 25,000-35000 SOM ($3-5) to get from the airport to the city center.

GETTING AROUND IN UZBEKISTAN

There are many ways to get around Uzbekistan – train, private taxi or flight. How to travel in Uzbekistan out of these options depends on your budget, where you want to go, and how much time you have. Trains are amazing in Uzbekistan with the option of a bullet train called Afrosiyob or an overnight sleeper train called Sharq.

Trains

Uzbekistan has an excellent transportation infrastructure, including trains that connect the far east to west. All the major cities and towns are well connected. These trains are comfortable, mostly on time, and are a great way to explore the country. Trains are the primary mode of transportation between cities in Uzbekistan.

Railway tickets in Uzbekistan can be booked via the official website here. Make sure you book train tickets 2 months in advance, especially during tourist season as the seats get filled quickly. There is enough storage space in both the trains and they are extremely clean and comfortable.

Flights

The country is well serviced with domestic airlines – Uzbekistan Airways. All the major 4 cities – Tashkent, Bukhara, Samarkand and Khiva (Urgench airport) have domestic airports with good connectivity. The distance between most cities is 30-45 minutes.

Taxis

Within cities, tourists can use local taxis or app based taxis – YandexGo. Similar to Uber, it is widely used in Uzbekistan. This is really useful as you don’t have to haggle with the taxi drivers regarding the fares and confusion regarding the destination – the accent makes it difficult to understand. I used it in Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara without any issues. However, in Khiva the app service is not available. 

In Tashkent, payment is possible through card. Even food delivery is possible through the YandexGo app in Tashkent.

Metro

While metro exists only in the city of Tashkent, it is one of the best and oldest systems. The metro stations are a landmark in themselves and thankfully it is now allowed to photograph. The metro connectivity is amazing within the city and is very affordable.

UZBEKISTAN ITINERARY

If you’re wondering how many days you need to visit Uzbekistan, then it can be done within a few days or few weeks. It is possible to visit the main tourist attractions in Uzbekistan within one week. However, to cover the silk road highlights I suggest 10 days in Uzbekistan.

10 days Uzbekistan itinerary

Day 1-2:  Explore Tashkent

Day 3-5: Trip to Samarkand

Day 6-7: Trip to Bukhara

Day 8-9: Trip to Khiva

Day 10: Fly back to Tashkent and back to your country

Thanks to the boom in tourism in the last few years, there is no dearth of accommodation options in Uzbekistan. There are hostels and AirBnBs also easily available.

Tashkent

Art Hostel

I heard about this hostel from a lot of backpackers and they had great reviews about it. So I decided to stay here and it lived up to its promise. Tucked in a small alley in a residential area, it is a peaceful place. Metro station is 500 meters and there are a couple of banks and convenience stores near the hostel so it’s easy to get around. The hostel is clean and cozy.

They serve breakfast with a good variety of vegetarian options. Only disappointment was that they didn’t accept card payments. Cash is acceptable in SOM or USD.

Michelin Hotel

Located close to Art Hostel, I promised myself to stay here the next time. This 3-star hotel features a fitness centre, a restaurant and a bar. The premises also has an ATM. The accommodation features a concierge service, luggage storage space and currency exchange for guests.

Hotel Uzbekistan

Samarkand

Registan Hostel

Located very close to the Registan Square, Registan Hostel has air conditioned dorms and private rooms. It also features complimentary WiFi access and a common lounge, shared kitchen and airport transfers.

Muborak Hostel

A family run hostel, it has the feel of a guest house or AirBnB. It is 1 km from Bibi Khanum mosque and can be easily reached by a short walk.

The rooms are clean and comfortable at Muborak Hostel. And the food buffet at breakfast and dinner is incredible too. The owner has a convenience store that sells baked goods (including Uzbek bread), snacks, water, cold drinks, etc.

Orient Star Hotel

The hotel features an outdoor swimming pool and poolside terrace that is located in the old part of the city. Orient Star Samarkand’s rooms include a minibar, TV and wi-fi. Breakfast is provided in the hotel’s restaurant, which serves both European and regional Uzbek cuisine.

Bukhara

Diyor Hostel

Located in Bukhara, there is a garden, shared lounge, terrace and free WiFi. They also offer continental breakfast. The property can be booked here.

Grand Ark Hotel

I stayed here for 2 nights exploring the Bukhara. It is an idyllic property with very comfortable rooms. Grand Ark Bukhara features a seasonal outdoor swimming pool, terrace, restaurant, and free WiFi throughout the property. 

At the hotel, the rooms come with a wardrobe. Each room comes with air conditioning, a desk and a flat-screen TV, and certain rooms at Grand Ark Bukhara have a balcony.

Lyabi House Hotel

I went to their in-house restaurant and promised myself to stay the next time! I highly recommend one meal at the Avyan Restaurant – the aesthetics are so well done!

Located in the historic centre of Bukhara, Lyabi House Hotel is set in a 19th-century building decorated with antique furnishings. With free Wi-Fi access, the air-conditioned rooms all come with a refrigerator, a work desk and a TV. Each has a private bathroom equipped with a bathtub, free toiletries and a hairdryer.

The restaurant offers Uzbek cuisine, which is served on the terrace in warm months. Breakfast is available daily.

Khiva

Islam Khodja

BUDGET FOR UZBEKISTAN TRAVEL

The amount of money you spend in a country completely depends on how soon you book your flight tickets, number of days you plan to do, the kind of hotels you stay in, the type of restaurants you visit, and the amount of shopping you do. However, Uzbekistan is an extremely affordable country in general.

You can find nice luxury hotels for less than $50 per night. Hostels can be hit or miss, so if you’re on a budget I suggest opting for AirBnB or guest houses in Bukhara and Khiva.

Food options are great everywhere and very affordable. There are vegetarian options in most places. You can get delicious street food for $1-$3. Sit down meals at nice restaurants cost approximately $5 – 10 per head.

Renting a car with a driver costs approximately $15-20 for 1 day. You can negotiate the cost of excursions with tour agents or guides. Rates are competitive and affordable. 

However, I suggest keeping some money aside for the souvenirs in Uzbekistan because there are so charming and unique you would want to buy a lot!

On an average, per day budget would be around $30-75 excluding the flights, internal train transport and visa.

UZBEKISTAN FOOD GUIDE

Being a vegetarian, I was quite worried about getting vegetarian food in Uzbekistan. Most of the food is meat heavy. Although less, there are vegetarian options in Uzbekistan – even in Khiva. I cannot say so for the countryside or smaller towns, but I got decent veg options in all 4 cities I traveled in.

If you are wondering what to eat in Uzbekistan or best Uzbekistan food to try then check out this list. I am sticking to the most popular vegetarian options, since I am a vegetarian but there are many meat options too.

Uzbek Bread

Traditional Uzbek bread (locally known as ‘non’) is particularly sacred in Uzbek culture. Flat and round, this bread is torn by hand before eating. The flour is mixed with water, salt and yeast and made to rest. Once it rises, the dough is weighed, rolled into round shapes, added with sesame seeds and baked in a tandoor till the crust is crispy.

The delicious fragrance reverberates through small streets of each city and you can be sure there is a small bread making factory tucked behind some closed doors.

This bread is served with each meal and acts like a side dish.

Manti

Similar to momos, Manti is another traditional Uzbek dish. They are small, steamed dumplings filled with meat (usually lamb or beef) and onions. They are also made in potato and pumpkin fillings for vegetarians. Manti is served with a yogurt that is garnished with dill. 

Gumma 

Gumma is the most delicious meat pies. Most often there are fried, but at home they are baked.  They are usually served with tomato sauce, lightly peppered. The vegetarian version has potatoes or pumpkin in them.

Plov

Plov is very symbolic to Uzbek cuisine. Plov, just like Pulav in India, consists of traditional rice with meat and carrots. There are many variations of this recipe, depending on the region, however, the Samarkand Plov is the most peculiar one.

Plov incorporates quail eggs, chickpeas, raisins, garlic and a rich combination of spices such as saffron, coriander or Berberis seeds. For its preparation sheep’s fat and cottonseed oil are used, which is what gives it its characteristic flavour. In many areas, horse meat is used in Plov, making it a rare speciality.

Plov is not available in vegetarian version (unfortunately).

Shivit Oshi

Shivit oshi is a unique Uzbekistani dish of bright, green noodles and can be found almost exclusively in the city of Khiva. The noodles for shivit oshi are colored with dill infusion and, when cooked, covered with a hearty stew of potatoes and carrots. It is served with tangy yoghurt.

Fruits

Uzbekistan is home to a diverse array of fruits that are both delicious and nutritious. Some of the most popular fruits grown in the country include melon, watermelon, apricots, peaches, pomegranate, apples, grapes and figs. Fruits and dry fruits are generally offered in breakfast. 

I had the sweetest and juiciest melons and peaches here everyday for breakfast and they should not be missed.

Tea

Every meal is incomplete without Uzbek tea. Uzbek tea, also known as Chay, is a traditional drink that is offered to guests and is part of the traditional culture. It is typically made from black tea leaves, which are grown in the mountains of the country. Green tea with honey is also amazing and should be tried while traveling in Uzbekistan.

Somsa

A puff pastry very similar to Samosa in India, the filling is also of potato and onion. Sometimes, it has meat filling too. Somsa like Samosa is shaped in a triangularl shape and can be either baked or fried. It is a popular street food in Uzbekistan and can be found at most local markets and street vendors.

BEST TIME TO VISIT UZBEKISTAN

The best time to visit Uzbekistan is during fall months September- October or spring months April-May. Summer months (June to August) are extremely hot and uncomfortable. Walking around the historical sights becomes actually difficult and uncomfortable. And I am saying this even though I live in an Indian city that experiences 40 degrees summer for 3 months straight. The roads look deserted and everything kind of shuts down between 1-4pm.

Winter (December to February) months are extremely cold with chilly winds and it may snow.

WHAT TO PACK FOR UZBEKISTAN

When planning a trip to Uzbekistan, it’s important to consider the customs and climate of the country. As it is a relatively conservative country, it is best to dress modestly, particularly when visiting religious sites such as mosques and mausoleums.

When visiting religious sites, you need to cover your shoulders and knees. Outside of the religious sites, you can dress as per your comfort. Unlike some countries, it is not compulsory to wear a headscarf in Uzbekistan.

Summers in Uzbekistan are extremely hot, so it’s essential to pack sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun. Pack light, cotton and airy clothing that can help you to stay cool during the daytime. Carry a stole/shawl which can be wrapped around the waist or shoulder if need be. Most religious places have a scarf or shrug and request you to wear one.

Always carry a reusable water bottle to keep yourself hydrated. Banks, convenience stores, hotels and hotels have water dispensers with hot and cold water so fill the bottle before heading out.

LANGUAGE IN UZBEKISTAN

The main language spoken in Uzbekistan is Uzbek language. It is spoken by the majority of the population and is used in official government and educational settings. However, Russian is also widely spoken and understood, particularly in urban areas. 

Most locals in tourist areas can speak English but it is always handy to keep Google translate with you. I found youngsters in Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva to be better versed in English than in Tashkent.

Yes! Uzbekistan is a great destination for tourists for many reasons – from historical monuments, incredible architecture, interesting culture, friendly locals and delicious cuisine. The accommodation, local travel and food is extremely affordable. 

With a daily average travel budget of around $30-75 per day, travelers can enjoy all that the country has to offer without breaking their savings. All of these factors combined make travel to Uzbekistan an excellent destination for tourists.

The country also has an easy e-visa process available making it a hassle free destination to visit. This makes it easy for travelers to plan their trip and obtain the necessary documents within a short period of time.

Is travel to Uzbekistan safe?

Yes! Uzbekistan is considered a safe destination for tourists. Incidents of violence against tourists are rare. There are police in every tourist site and a helpline number specially for tourists which makes it very reassuring. I met many solo women travelers throughout my journey and everyone said they felt safe at all times. In any case and any country it is important that tourists should always be aware of their surroundings, and keep an eye on their personal belongings, especially in crowded areas or on public transportation. I walked alone in alleys of cities and even took cabs at 11 pm and I did not feel unsafe. 

How many days do you need to travel in Uzbekistan?

A typical itinerary for a first-time visitor should be 7-10 days in Uzbekistan, allowing you to see the main highlights of the country.

Buying a SIM card in Uzbekistan?

Although most hostels/hotels and restaurants offer free Wi-Fi if you want to be connected on the go, it is best to buy a prepaid SIM card with data. It will also be useful to make/receive calls from taxi drivers to coordinate the exact location.

Ucell, Mobiuz and Beeline are the companies that operate in the country and most of them offer the same prices. They have 4G connectivity throughout the country. I bought a Ucell data card from the Tashkent International Airport arrival as I needed to call my driver for pick-up and it was the best decision ever. Getting into the city and then trying to find a store can get cumbersome. Plus the airport accepts USD so you don’t need to exchange money immediately.

Do you need a guide in Uzbekistan?

The silk road is full of UNESCO World Heritage sites, and one can understand the history well if there is a guide with you. Although tourists can hire local guides at each tourist destination who offer services in many languages, I suggest that having a guide on the entire trip is beneficial as one can visit some offbeat spots. The guides also know good places to eat and stay.

Is travel to Uzbekistan cheap?

Yes. Owing to the currency conversions (12000 Uzbek Som  ~ 1 USD ~ 83 INR) and lower cost of living, it is affordable to travel in Uzbekistan. 

What should you avoid in Uzbekistan?

Do not drink tap water. Always ask the hotel staff for filtered drinking water and in most hostels and hotels there are filtered water dispensers. In restaurants you have to buy bottled water as they do not serve water like in India.

Is a Covid-19 test needed to enter Uzbekistan?

As of May 2023, you don’t need a Covid test. But it’s always better to check the embassy website in your country to get the latest information.

Do you need Registration slips from hotels and hostels?

I read about this before going that there are random checks at immigration for registration slips. The registration slip is basically a paper given by the hostel/hotel claiming that you stayed with them. It has your name, date of stay and passport number.

I diligently collected it from all my accommodations but I was not asked to produce it at the immigration.

• Do not trash the heritage site with wrappers and uneaten food. Use designated areas and right-colored bins for disposing of waste.
• Be mindful of all the signs and follow them respectfully especially in mosques and mausoleums.
• Respect the ancient structures of mosques and other structures by not sitting on them.
• Respect the places which prohibit photography.
• Do not write on the pillars and walls of archeological sites and monuments.
