Are you on a short visit to Bangkok or using Bangkok as a layover to visit other places in Thailand or other Southeast Asian countries? Are you wondering how to spend one day in Bangkok? While I highly recommend spending at least 3 days in Bangkok, this blog covers what to do in Bangkok for 1 day, covering the Bangkok highlights and attractions.

The bustling capital of Thailand, Bangkok, is a city that never fails to impress visitors with its captivating blend of ancient traditions and modern marvels. Known for its active street life, heavily ornamented temples, bustling night bazaars, iconic landmarks and delicious street food, Bangkok offers a sensory overload that is truly unforgettable.

Whether you are visiting Nakhon Phanom, an offbeat province in north-eastern Thailand or Chiang Rai, the more popular temple destination, you will probably be transiting through Bangkok.

So if you only have limited time in the city but you still want to explore the best of Bangkok, you are in the right place! Read on this perfect 24 hours in Bangkok Itinerary – uncovering the hidden gems and fun activities that make Bangkok a must-visit destination.

Planning a trip to Bangkok?
Here are a few quick recommendations for you!
I suggest booking these services and activities in advance!

🚅 Getting There:
– Limo Bus Airport Express (Affordable option to transfer from the airport to BKK city)
– Private Airport Transfers (For those who plan to fly into Suvarnabhumi Airport)

👣 Activities & Tours:
– Bangkok BTS Skytrain Rabbit Card (Airport pick-up)
– Bangkok Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour (For all Bangkok attractions)

ONE DAY IN BANGKOK

Bangkok is one of the best destinations to visit in Thailand and after visiting it for three times in last few years, these are the best things to do in Bangkok if you have only 24 hours in the city!

Lumphini Park

Lumphini park offers an open public space, trees, and playgrounds in concrete Bangkok and contains an artificial lake where visitors can rent boats. The park is extremely popular with locals and tourists as there is ample space for outdoor leisure activities. People can be seen exercising, doing Tai Chi, yoga, playing games or in picnic mode.

Visitors can also easily spot Komodo dragons around the water body in Lumphini park.

This park is around a lot of embassies, which is why it is peaceful and sophisticated. Although far, this area will be my first go to choice for an accommodation in Bangkok!

Lumphini Park Bangkok

Wat Saket by Bangkok Canal Tour

A local friend who used to live in Bangkok highly suggested an offbeat temple to visit that gives an amazing view of the Bangkok Skyline. He also suggested taking the offbeat route, i.e. by boat, while exploring the Bangkok canals. We took a cab from Lumphini Park to Hua Chang (Siam Square).

The Khlong boats operate daily on the Saeh Seap canal from 05:30 am to 08:30 pm and are frequent (every 30 minutes). There is a timetable so one can plan accordingly. We boarded the Golden Mount line of Khlong Boats from Hua Chang to Phanfa Leelard Pier (or Phan Fa Lilat) station.

We waited for about 10 minutes, and the boat came in. It was fairly empty. The stench from the canals made it clear that it was not clean water. But it was interesting to pass through the old neighbourhoods of Bangkok that the tourists don’t see. In some sense, it reminded me of Mumbai.

The canal tour passes through mosques, temples and local houses that are full of graffiti. It gave a different insight into how the locals live.

Bangkok canal tour

We reached the Phanfa Leelard Pier in 15 minutes and walked 400 meters to reach the foothills of Golden Mount.

Golden Mount is the only hill in Bangkok, which is of great significance for all followers of Buddhism. 320 stairs take you up to the top for panoramic views of the entire city. Thankfully, there were mist fans throughout the climb. The sunset would be breathtaking from here (I could only imagine).

Originally known as Wat Sakae, the whole temple was re-established in the reign of King Rama I the Great and given the new name of Wat Saket. It is an ancient temple of the Ayutthaya period.

The Golden Mount was bestowed with the stupa, that is 77 meters tall. The stupa enshrines the Buddha’s relics received from India. These relics were dug from the hill of the old stupa in Kapilavastu.

There are many small temples around this hill and one can easily spend a couple of hours meditating or overlooking the beautiful city.

Admission to Wat Saket is free, but the entrance to the stupa at the top of the mountain is 50 Baht.

If you love boat rides and have more time on hand, then I highly recommend visiting the Bangkok’s Floating Markets where fruits, flowers, souvenirs and even food is sold on boats. There are seller boats selling these items and buyer boats where tourists can sit, shop, eat or simply enjoy this sensory overload.

The Grand Palace

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Bangkok, the Grand Palace really draws in tourists. Whether you are spending one day in Bangkok or more, this is one of the Bangkok highlights not to be missed.

Built around the late 18th century, the Grand Palace, Bangkok has been home to Thailand’s royal family for over 150 years.

The palace is not one entity but a complex comprising many buildings. Which is why it could take up to one entire day to cover everything. The complex spans 218,000 square meters and features temples, stupas, government offices, throne halls, a Buddhist library, and many manicured gardens. But if you are in a hurry like me, you can check out the highlights in 2 hours.

There are about 36 points of interest, and the main out of all of those is Wat Phra Kaew, also known as the Emerald Buddha temple. It is the abode of spirituality in Thailand and one of the most sacred sites of Buddhism.

The Emerald Buddha statue is a 14th-century statue carved from a single piece of jade, which makes it so remarkable.

Grand Palace timings:

The Grand Palace is open daily between 8.30 am – 3.30 pm – try to arrive around opening time to avoid the crowds!

Grand Palace entrance fee:

Tickets cost 500 THB (15 USD) and you can buy them at the palace. You can also buy them online, but you’ll need to do this at least 24 hours in advance.

Dress code for Grand Palace:

Visitors have to abide by a strict dress code and are required to cover their shoulders and legs. There are street vendors selling pants and sarongs, and they can be rented or bought.

Wat Kaew Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Bangkok

Wat Pho

10 minutes walk away from the Grand Palace is Wat Pho, Bangkok. Wat Pho, also known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, has to be one the itinerary of one day in Bangkok!

It is the oldest temple compound in Bangkok, known for the 150-foot gold-plated statue of the reclining Buddha. The temple also houses the largest collection of Buddha images in Thailand. Much like the cave temples of Dambulla!

Wat Pho is also considered as the first public university for Thai massage. There are many inscriptions and images with instructions for the Thai massage.

There are 91 big and small stupas inside the Wat Pho complex as well as belfries, a central shrine, viharas, pavilions and gardens.

Wat Pho timings:

Wat Pho is open daily, between 8 am – 6.30 pm.

Wat Pho entrance fees:

Admission is 300 THB (8.6 USD).

Wat Pho, Bangkok

Wat Arun

Wat Arun, known as the Temple of the Dawn is one of the most beautiful temples in Thailand. It is very close to the Grand Palace and Wat Pho so easily possible to cover during the 24 hours in Bangkok itinerary. Albeit it is on the other side of the Chao Phraya river, so visitors need to get on the local ferry to go there. Taking a boat tour on Chao Phraya river is also a popular activity in Bangkok.

The history of Wat Arun dates back to the Ayutthaya era from the 17th century. It was earlier called Wat Makok, based on the village name. The temple was also the original home of Emerald Buddha. It was later restored by King Taksin to make it into the glorious structure that it is today.

The interior of the temple is simple, like a simple pagoda, but it is the exterior that takes your breath away. The exterior wall is covered in over one million colourful ceramic tiles that were salvaged from a shipwreck before being used to embellish the temple.

Another popular activity to do at Wat Arun is to get a Thai Photoshoot. This photoshoot allows tourists to wear traditional Thai outfits that can be rented from the many shops outside the temple, hire a photographer (optional) and take pictures. This activity can cost you anything between 2000-3000 THB, depending on the size of your group. Read in detail about it here – Traditional Thai Costume Photoshoot at Wat Arun. Book a photoshoot here – Thai Costume Rental Bangkok by Absolute Thai.

Wat Arun is lit up at night and makes for a spectacular sight across the river from the other end.

Wat Arun timings:

Wat Arun can be visited between 8 am – 5.30 pm.

Wat Arun entrance fee:

The entrance fee is 200 THB (5.7 USD) and you can buy a ticket at the temple.

Khao San Road

It was already evening by the time I completed all of these Bangkok attractions in one day. I was hungry, tired and looking for something other than temples. I originally wanted to visit Chatuchak market but it was very far and I had no strength to walk so much. I took a cab to go to Khao San instead.

Since I wanted to visit the local streets and shop for some souvenirs, I headed to the Khao San Road. Khao San Road is a must-visit place in Bangkok. Extremely popular amongst the backpackers, this short pedestrian street explodes with a variety of smells, sounds and tastes in the evening.

Khao San has everything you need – hostels, guesthouses, cafes, street food, tattoo parlours, bars, massage parlours, souvenir shops and every other thing a tourist requires. Don’t forget to bargain while shopping for accessories, clothes and souvenirs.

You can have the wackiest and weirdest-looking and tasting food in the streets of Bangkok. From fried insects to roasted crocodile, from scorpion on a stick to chicken satay, from fruit smoothies to pad thai noodles, everything is available on Khao San Road.

Khao San Road Bangkok

MUST TRY FOOD IN BANGKOK IN 24 HOURS

Bangkok in one day is more than enough to try some legendary Thai dishes. Do check out this popular Bangkok Cuisines you shouldn’t miss post.

While dining and cafes options are many, the street food in Bangkok is so famed that CNN named it the very best city in the world for street food.

If you’re planning the perfect trip to Bangkok and have been wondering what are some of the Thai dishes to try, there are many options. If you are a vegetarian like me, fret not, there are ample things to try as well, although less street food options! These are vegetarian foods to try in Bangkok.

Food Tours in Bangkok

A great way to sample the best places to eat in Bangkok and try some of the most delicious dishes is to go on a Bangkok food tour. There are plenty of tours offered, some also including a tuk-tuk tour of the city and others including a cooking class. The duration is 2-4 hours with a guide explaining the origins of the dish and its flavours.

✦ Pro tip: Book these guided food tours – Bangkok Street Art and Street Food Walking Half Day Tour or Enjoy Bangkok by Tuk Tuk: a Street Eats Food Tour.

Papaya Salad

Generally served as a side dish, the salad is bursting with flavours and is one of my favourite vegetarian dishes in Southeast Asia. I have had the opportunity to try it in Cambodia and Vietnam, and it never disappoints.

The salad is a combination of freshly shredded green papaya and carrots, chillies, peanuts, tomatoes, and glass noodles or sticky rice with a sauce of garlic, sugar, fish sauce, lime, and tamarind juice. Just request them to serve without the fish sauce, and you have a freshly prepared savoury salad.

Massaman Curry

Spicy and full of flavor, Massaman curries are easily available across Bangkok and there are varieties of green, red, and yellow. It tastes very similar to Thai curry available in India. The curry is cooked with potatoes, onions, coconut milk, and either meat, prawn, or tofu for a veg option, until it is perfect. It is served by pouring over the rice.

Mango Sticky Rice

This was a saviour on countless occasions, especially when I couldn’t find vegetarian dishes. The freshly made sticky rice is soaked in coconut milk, which has been cooked slowly with sugar and salt. After the milk settles, the juicy mangoes are peeled and sliced over the plate. This is a must try in Bangkok, especially for those who have a sweet tooth.

Coconut ice-cream

Coconut ice cream served in Bangkok is probably the creamiest ice cream I have tried. Full of fresh flavour that includes coconut shavings, it is served in a coconut cup, making it even more authentic!

PRACTICAL INFO FOR SPENDING ONE DAY IN BANGKOK

To tick off all the attractions in one day in Bangkok, here are some of the practical details for your trip to the Thai capital.

How to reach Bangkok

If you’re travelling from overseas and you only have 24 hours in Bangkok, most likely you will arrive at one of Bangkok’s two airports: Suvarnabhumi (BKK) or Don Muang (DMK).

Suvarnabhumi is situated in the southeast corner of the city, it’s around 30 minutes by taxi to Bangkok city. Most international flights are serviced here.

Don Muang (DMK) is an older airport and serves low-cost airlines such as AirAsia, and typically serves domestic and regional flights. It’s located in the north of the city and again takes approximately 30 minutes by taxi to reach Bangkok city.

Alternatively, there are options to take public transportation, such as train or a bus to reach Bangkok city from the airport. Bangkok Airport Rail Link is a commuter rail line connecting Suvarnabhumi Airport to Phaya Thai (BTS – skytrain interchange) station via Makkasan Station (MRT Phetchaburi – subway interchange). This line is operational from 6 am to 12 midnight with 10-minute intervals.

Best time to visit Bangkok

A busy street in Bangkok | One day in Bangkok

Being a Southeast Asian country, the best temperature Thailand can have is 27°C.

Thailand has two seasons, the dry season and the monsoon season. The monsoon season starts late May/early June and runs to mid-October. During these months, Bangkok is humid with almost daily showers, which may be short or long. Although the showers subside soon with almost no waterlogging, it is something to keep in mind if you are a tourist.

The dry season (December to February) sees temperatures around 22°C to 32°C. Due to such temperatures, Thailand is thronged by tourists.

If you want to travel with less crowd, plan your One day in Bangkok for the shoulder season of March/April or November. I went to Bangkok in February which was hot but bearable and in June and July and although it didn’t rain, it was hot and humid but bearable. Of course I live in a city in India which sees crazy temperatures so Bangkok weather was totally a respite for me.

How to get around Bangkok

Bangkok has a fantastic public transport system in place. With english titles everywhere, it is easily accessible even by tourists. Such a transport system makes it possible for tourists to see the best of Bangkok in one day without worrying too much.

Bangkok Skytrain

One of the most efficient ways to zip around the city during your one day in Bangkok is via the Skytrain. This elevated rapid transport system connects much of the city. There are information kiosks everywhere plus maps that enable you to make sense of direction. These maps also have tourist sites mentioned so you know which station to get off at.

Bangkok Skytrain ticket charges are between 16 to 44 THB (0.50 – 1.50 USD). A one-day pass costs 140 THB (roughly 4.60 USD).

BTS Skytain in Bangkok

Bangkok MRT

The next best option is MRT. The Bangkok metro has two lines (Blue and Purple) connecting the city and prices are similar to the Skytrain. Hours of operation are 6 am – 12 am.

Bus

Apart from the Skytrain and the MRT, you can also find countless bus lines in Bangkok. Book the bus here Limo Bus Airport Express.

Tuk-Tuk

The notorious tuk-tuks of Bangkok are the most adventurous way to get around the city. There are many scams involving tuk-tuks in Bangkok, but these provide point-to-point drop-off. Tourists have the option to hire the tuk tuk for one entire day, covering all the tourist places in Bangkok by negotiating a rate.

Grab and Bolt

Grab and Bolt are the Thai versions of Uber. Both are app-based taxi/cab hailing service that allows for credit-card as well as cash payment. It is best in case you do not want to converse with the cab driver and want a point-to-point pick-up and drop-off. One has to input the pick-up location through a GPS map and the drop-off location. The amount is calculated based on the distance on the app.

Fees vary based on the journey, but expect anything from 60 THB (2 USD) for short rides to 500 THB (17 USD) for longer rides across town. You can also book motorbikes, which are cheaper, faster, and practical if you’re exploring Bangkok solo.

Where to Stay in Bangkok

Bangkok is a huge city that offers all sorts of accommodation for all sorts of budgets. So much so that it can be overwhelming to choose from all the options out there! From choosing the area, to budget to what sort of accommodation, it can get a bit intimidating!

While the best and luxurious hotel options are located in the Riverside area, the Khao San area is popular amongst backpackers due to the number of cheaper accommodations.

I feel it is better to choose a city centre, although it may be far from the airport, the public transportation options are great. Since you have one day in Bangkok, it is best to be close to the BTS SkyTrain, so choosing the Siam Square or the Sukhumvit area is a good choice.

Below you can find my top picks for staying in Bangkok for every budget.

Luxury Hotel – Amari Watergate Bangkok

Located close to Chidlom and Ratchathewi BTS stations, this five-star property offers stylish rooms with free Wi-Fi and breathtaking views of the city. It is one of the best places to stay in Bangkok. It is just a few meters from Pratunam Market and ferry terminal, Platinum Mall is also right opposite, so one can shop to their heart’s content. My favourite view is the outdoor pool overlooking the Bangkok skyline!

Amari Watergate can be booked here.

Are you travelling to Bangkok and looking for hotels in Bangkok? It is best to stay in the central area that has access to public transportation and is close to all the touristy places. I stayed at the Kimpton Maa-Lai, a luxury boutique hotel that is perfectly located along the tourist sites. Read on this Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok Review to know what I loved the most and why I recommend it.

Bangkok unveiled its grandeur as soon as I hopped in a taxi from the airport, traversing through the bustling city, until I reached the heart of the city. With embassies and parks around, this area exuded a certain charm and irresistible natural allure that captivated me.

A sense of warmth engulfed me as I walked in the door after being greeted with ‘Sawasdee’. I was way earlier than the check-in time and being a busy week in Bangkok with many events, concerts and conferences lined up, the hotel was full.

I was directed towards the waiting area which has complimentary cookies, coffee and tea choices. I decided to take a walk around the hotel premises and get to know the hotel better while waiting for the room key.

An urban oasis

ABOUT KIMPTON MAA-LAI BANGKOK HOTEL

Surrounded by lush greenery and vibrant modernity, Kimpton Maa-Lai rests on the leafy-green Langsuan Road near the Lumpini Park. While this area is dotted with numerous luxurious establishments, Kimpton Maa-Lai surpasses them all and boasts of being in the centre of all the social happenings 24×7.

Standing tall in the sky, this property spans across 11 landscaped acres, infusing elements of SouthEast-Asian culture. Here, the essence and sophistication of InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) truly comes alive, with thoughtful amenities, playful design and a sincere personal touch.

MAA-LAI stems from the age-old Thai philosophy “lamiat”, which says that life should be approached as a work of art. Taking the philosophy very seriously, the staff at the hotel continuously craft and refine the details in the pursuit of perfection in each department.

KIMPTON MAA-LAI BANGKOK REVIEW

After waiting for a couple of hours, I was greeted by Ms Tawan Moody, Assistant Marketing Communications Manager at Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok. I went on a guided tour with her around the hotel to check out the various restaurants, library, gym and infinity pool. At the end of the guided tour, I was given my room key. So let me start with that first.

Rooms at Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok

Ms Tawan informed me that there are a total of 362 Accommodation Rooms in this 40-floor building that include rooms, suites and service residences. The rooms use organic materials and traditional Thai artisanship, giving the hotel a modern, linear architecture. The bedrooms and bathrooms that have been fully appointed with modern creature comforts, the richly layered spaces offer a luxurious, cocoon-like vibe, beckoning a savvy, design-minded crowd to settle in and stay a while.

Asian artistic heritage is reflected in every corner, starting with complimentary HARNN amenities and local art. From triple-glazed windows to rid all noises and VIFA Nordic sound system to intelligent, newly gilded Dyson hair dryers glammed up in all suites and anti-fog bathroom mirrors, the hotel blurs the line between hotel and urban Eden.

I entered my room located on the 23rd floor and the view of Bangkok skyline from my room made me gasp! A welcome note with complimentary bite-sized Thai Luk Chup (Mung Bean Dessert) in the shape of vegetables, an edible chocolate tuk-tuk and few other Thai sweets welcomed me into my room.

A twin bed with all modern amenities including a smart TV, a stereo, a stacked mini-bar that included alcoholic drinks, and a coffee machine were in the room.

In addition to the floor-to-ceiling windows with automatic drapes, the room’s reading corner has options to read books or simply lounge there in awe with the skyline to allow guests to unwind.

From the plush bathtubs to soak in after a long day out in Bangkok city, or the uber comfortable beds to nap, Kimpton Maa-Lai sure knows how to make guests’ stay a memorable one.

Oh, and drinking water was served in glass bottles. Talk about taking on sustainability!

Kimpton Maa Lai Bangkok Cafe

First of the first food option in Maa-Lai, right after passing the entrance lobby, is CRAFT Cafe. The first thing I noticed here was the pets lounging around in the cafe with their human parents. The friendly vibe with soothing music sure made its presence felt.

CRAFT cafe is open throughout the day and night and serves handcrafted coffee, curates creative cocktails, finger foods and serves craft beers in a garden patio space. The cafe is the designated pitstop to pick up a snack, to linger for a chat or to sit down for a nightcap with healthy, vegan and vegetarian options.

I promised myself to come back here after the guided tour was over. Afterall having Thai Tea in Bangkok is a ritual I must stick to.

Kimpton Maa Lai Bangkok Restaurant

Ms.Jigger is an Italian Restaurant in Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok that serves artisanal pizzas, pasta and bite-sized Italian cicchetti – fiery meatballs, carpaccio with truffle oil, and crackling artichoke hearts – alongside a globe-trotting menu of heady drinks.

Timeless and tasteful, one gets to choose their preferred poison, from small-batch spirits and bespoke wines to handcrafted cocktails. If you prefer an outdoor terrace setting, then the drinks and food will be served there.

Outdoor sitting areas

Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok Rooftop Bar

Popular even amongst the locals, Bar.Yard is a rooftop bar located on the 40th floor that serves some amazing cocktails, mocktails, finger foods with a side of Bangkok Skyline views.

Perched above the city and set against the serene backdrop of Lumphini Park, the award winning Bar.Yard provides a visual and auditory spectacle. The cocktails and mocktails at Bar.Yard are not simply mixed; they are meticulously crafted.

With a menu of specials, there is a range of Thai and international craft beers on the beverage menu. As I sip on the newly introduced Chinese craft gin called the Peddlers, I hear about the culinary journey that takes the seasonal farm-to-plate route and dishes out slow food.

The menu here features two weekly specials – Taco Tuesdays and Paella Sundays, as well as a special vegetarian section.

Whether it’s a weeknight or the weekend, Bar.Yard gives you all the right reasons to stay out late. The taste of the summer flows through the ambiance as well as island spirits, classic cocktails and some serious music. With a crew of creative DJs spinning fresh, daily mixes and something always on, Bar.Yard is designed for good times.

Maa-Lai offers a buffet option as part of the accommodation at Stock.Room.

The menu is a combination of Thai cuisine (comprising veg curries and different types of meat) as well as international cuisine such as continental, Arabic, Mexican and Indian to cater to all types of guests.
There is a live egg station where you can order the eggs you want. As well as fresh bread and a dessert counter with divinely fragrant croissants, fruit danish and cakes.

Stock.Room as the name suggests, is also the in-hotel gourmet grocerant where visitors can shop for groceries, see it cooked and savour it post breakfast hours. The casual, cosy space boasts at least six pop-up food stalls, serving up sophisticated street eats and whatnot, from crazy cheeses and freshest seafood to made-to-order pasta. Visitors can even try their hand at making Pad Thai under the watchful eye of the chef.

Infinity Pool at Maa-Lai, Bangkok

I cannot write a Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok review without the mention of its infinity pool.

Like the enchanting amaranth flower and energy stone, the hotel spa in Bangkok offers the residents an array of healing therapies that fuses ancient Oriental wisdom with modern cosmetic techniques, including muscle-soothing massages, refreshing facials and Amaranth-scented rituals.

The best part is, hotel residents can book a spa in their room if you feel uncomfortable in public premises.

FINAL THOUGHTS ABOUT KIMPTON MAA-LAI BANGKOK REVIEW

I had a relaxing time at Kimpton Maa-Lai and especially loved the hospitality, attention to detail, and the short visit I was there. The resort is extremely beautiful, cosy, and comfortable, with delicious food. Based on my experience, I would say that Kimpton Maa-Lai is one of the best luxury Bangkok hotels in the city. The staff is friendly, and one can easily pick up a conversation with them. The warm hospitality is a warrant that I would love to come back and stay here.

A peaceful yet charming town located in the northeast of Thailand needs limelight so that travelers can get their ultimate digital detox. Nakhon Phanom has everything a traveler would want and expect. Read along to know the things to do in Nakhon Phanom.

I had the opportunity to visit Nakhon Phanom as it was chosen as a venue for Mekong Tourism Forum (MTF), 2018. I was extremely pleased with the choice of the venue as it gave a different perspective of Thailand which is so uncommon. Bordering Laos and being separated by the tranquil brown waters of Mekong River, this Nakhon Phanom itinerary is the best way to plan your trip for 3 days or more.

I flew to Nakhon Phanom after spending one day in Bangkok. While Bangkok was a sensory overload, the tranquil pace of Nakhon Phanom really made me feel at peace.

WHY NAKHON PHANOM?

While there is no dearth of amazing destinations across Thailand, off the beaten path in Thailand is something a lot of people are looking at. The crowds are less a such places and the experience is authentic. I had not heard about Nakhon Phanom and had no idea what it offered. I was pleasantly surprised with the options of places to visit in Nakhon Phanom.

THINGS TO DO IN NAKHON PHANOM

Chill along the banks of Mekong River

Since the entire town is situated at the Mekong riverbank, you cannot miss the Mekong river no matter where you are. Stay in one of the hotels situated at the river bank or take a walk at the riverfront. The only sounds you will listen to are the bird calls, cricket sounds and the occasional motorboats to catch fresh fish. The ever-changing cloud formations and the colour of the sky will keep you around the river bank for sure. Nakhon Phanom river view hotels are every traveller’s favourite and I enjoyed my stay at The River Hotel and it had the best views in town, period!

I especially relaxed looking at the Laotion mountain on the other side of Mekong riverbank. I found the mountains, river and the overall atmosphere extremely therapeutic.

River Cruise on Mekong River

If you are bored by doing nothing, Nakhon Phanom evening cruise or sunset dinner cruise is the best activity for the evening. It is one of the best Nakhon Phanom attractions and gives a wonderful opportunity to catch the South Asian sunset overlooking the Mekong. It generally rains in the afternoon and the sky colours in the evening are one of the most gorgeous that I have seen so far!

Grab a snack and beer and watch the sun go down, the water splash on your face and people going about their business in Laos! Yup, time to tick off ‘Being in 2 places at once’ from your bucket-list as it is the border town between Thailand and Laos and super pretty.

Cafes in Nakhon Phanom | Food in Nakhon Phanom

The town has a lot of influence from Vietnam because a lot of people migrated here during the Vietnam war after crossing Laos. And that is the reason you will find Vietnam coffee here. Some desserts won’t hurt either! Cute European style cafes are lined up along the main road overlooking the Mekong river.

While exploring Nakhon Phanom on foot and checking out the riverfront during the humidity I couldn’t help but check out a cute little cafe on the crossroads. I had a quick visit to the Cafe Le Landmark. This cafe serves decent coffee, tea various types of smoothies as well as some European desserts such as pastries and croissants.

The riverfront comes alive in the evening as the entire town comes down, to have a good time, catch up with friends, walk or snack. You will not get tired of photographing street art, installations, boats on the river, sunsets, cute children playing on the riverfront and the Multiheaded Naga (Paya Sri Satta Nakara) which is the landmark of Nakhon Phanom.

This street market starts operation between 4 pm to 9:30 pm and there are ample things to photograph and do here. Streetside thrift stores, souvenirs and, of course, lots of food. All the town’s historic buildings are also situated on this street which gives it a nice atmosphere too.

Nakhon Phanom Night Market

Some retail therapy and local gastronomic indulgence is always good for relaxation, right? I found the Nakhon Phanom night market to be cheaper than Bangkok (for clothes) with almost similar varieties if not more. Do indulge in some local lip-smacking starters, mains and desserts. Nakhon Phanom night market timings are 5pm – 9pm on Fueang Nakhon Road, and this was one of my favourite things to do in Nakhon Phanom!

Surprisingly this small town night market is Huge and you can shop for anything and everything under the roof in this market.

Flight: It is well connected with Bangkok and there are 4 flights every day with a run time of 1 hour and 20 minutes

Train: There is no direct train but if you choose this option then you have to board at Hua Lamphong to Udon Thani which takes about 9 hours and then a bus to Nakhon Phanom which takes 4 hours.

Nakhon Phanom Weather | Best time to visit Nakhon Phanom

The wet season is oppressive and overcast, the dry season is humid and partly cloudy, and it is hot year-round. The best time to visit Nakhon Phanom is between November to February.

Where to Stay in Nakhon Phanom

Being an offbeat destination, generally used by locals for transit, Nakhon Phanom hotels are mid-range ones with very options of luxury hotels in Nakhon Phanom. Most hotels face the Mekong and on its bank. I stayed at the River Hotel and I witnessed some of the best sunrises and sunsets overlooking the Laotian mountains over the 3 days that I spent time there.

Sustainable Travel Tips for Things to do in Nakhon Phanom

Most hotels in Nakhon Phanom have refill water station – use it instead of buying PET bottles from 7-eleven stores.

Nakhon Phanom is still developing and opening up to tourism. Try buying food and clothes from a local market/food joint to boost their economy.

It is a clean town so do not add your waste to the streets. Always use a dustbin.

The entire SE Asia is reeling in the single-use plastic storm. Politely say no to a plastic bag when buying the soup or that beautiful indigo shirt!

Cover your knees and shoulders when visiting a pagoda

There is a huge local boost to travel startups with sustainable businesses and provided a showcase platform. We should do out bit to keep these startups running successfully.

Chiang Rai is a gorgeous city in Northern Thailand.

It’s a key stop along the Banana Pancake Trail, and for good reason: it’s a special place.

There are so many things to do in Chiang Rai, and this post will outline 15 of the best options.

Without further ado, let’s dive right in!

THINGS TO DO IN CHIANG RAI

Visit the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun)

Thailand is Spiritual.

The White Temple, also known as Wat Rong Khun, is a unique and visually stunning temple in Chiang Rai. You’ll see by this list that Chiang Rai is a very temple-dense area of Thailand, which is home to some of the most amazing temples in the country. The White Temple features intricate details and a, you guessed it, white, glittering facade that stands out against the green landscape in the backdrop.

White Temple_Things to do in Chiang Rai

Visit the Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten)

The Blue Temple, formally known in Thai as Wat Rong Suea Ten, is another stunning temple located in Chiang Rai, Thailand. The temple is renowned for its blue (who would’ve guessed?!) and gold colour scheme, as well as its unique and intricate design that showcases traditional Thai and Lanna styles. You can marvel at the intricate carvings, paintings, and sculptures while taking in the serene atmosphere that surrounds the temple.

Blue Temple in Chiang Rai

See the Clock Tower

The Clock Tower is an iconic landmark in Chiang Rai. Located in the centre of the city, this tall tower features a large clock on its facade that lights up at night. It’s a thing of beauty! You can also admire and enjoy panoramic views of the city from the top.

Take a boat ride on Mae Kok River

Another great thing to do in Chiang Rai is to take a boat tour. Similar to taking a river tour in Bangkok, it’s a unique way of seeing the city. A boat ride on Mae Kok River offers a peaceful and scenic escape from the bustling city mayhem of the centre of Chiang Rai. Sit back, relax and admire the lush green landscape and the rolling hills that line the river as you float along, taking in the natural beauty of the area. It’s a great way to relax and unwind, and a popular activity for nature enthusiasts.

Visit the Night Bazaar

The Night Bazaar is a bustling and vibrant market located in the centre of Chiang Rai. It’s open every evening, and it’s definitely worth a visit. You can browse the stalls selling everything from handmade goods and local crafts to street food and fashion. Street food is a great way to save money when backpacking Thailand. Visiting the Bazaar is a great way to experience Chiang Rai as a local too, as this is a popular market amongst the Thais.

See the Long Neck Karen Tribe Village

The Long Neck Karen Tribe Village is a unique and fascinating thing to do in Chiang Rai. You are able to learn about the culture and traditions of the Karen tribe, who are known for the ornate brass neck rings they wear as a symbol of their culture and heritage. Visitors to the village are allowed to observe the tribe’s daily life, learn about their customs and beliefs, and purchase traditional goods and crafts. It’s an immersive experience, to say the least!

Take a hot air balloon ride

Hot air balloon rides are an incredible experience anywhere in the world, and Chiang Rai is no different. The stunning scenery of Chiang Rai will make for a breathtakingly beautiful balloon ride. Soaring high above the lush green landscape and rolling hills, you can take in the panoramic views of the city, countryside, and nearby mountains. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and a great way to create lasting memories.

Take a day trip to Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is another amazing place in the northern region of Thailand. Many tourists opt for visiting Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai together. Therefore, a day trip to Chiang Mai may interest you. It’s an outdoor lover’s paradise, with incredible opportunities for hiking, jungle trekking and not to mention the variety of wildlife on offer in the surrounding mountains. It’s a wonderful place!

Day trip to Chiang Mai

Take a bike tour of Chiang Rai

You can never go wrong with a bike tour, and Chiang Rai is no different. Bike tours, as always, allow you to see most of the main sights in a short period, as you can get around Chiang Rai quickly on bikes. It’s also a great way to get some exercise while travelling, which is easier said than done. Nonetheless, Chiang Rai bike tours are a great thing to do there.

Visit the Chiang Rai Aquarium

A lesser-known thing to do in Chiang Rai, but still a worthy option, is the Chiang Rai Aquarium. There are over 200 species of fish and other marine creatures in their natural habitats for you to look at. The aquarium features interactive exhibits, educational displays, and exciting shows, too. It makes for a great day out!

Go trekking in the mountains

Trekking in the mountains surrounding Chiang Rai is a popular activity for adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts. The area around Chiang Rai is extraordinarily beautiful. You can hike through the gorgeous green landscape, passing waterfalls, hot springs, and scenic vistas along the way. Some of the best hikes in all of Thailand are in Chiang Rai! There are a variety of trails to choose from, with trails for all levels of fitness.

Trekking near Chiang Rai

Go on a food tour

If trekking is not your thing, you may wish to take a food tour of Chiang Rai. A food tour is a great way to experience the local cuisine and culture. You can try a variety of traditional dishes, sample street food, and visit local markets and restaurants. With knowledgeable guides to lead the way, a food tour is a delicious and educational experience. One of the best benefits of taking a food tour is that you know where to find good food for the rest of your stay!

Take a Thai cooking class

And if you enjoy eating Thai food, you may wish to learn how to cook it. Taking a Thai cooking class is a very authentic experience to take in Chiang Rai. Learning how to cook delicious Thai dishes will be a skill you can take anywhere in the world, spreading mouth-watering Thai cuisine worldwide.

Cooking class_things to do in Chiang Rai

Explore a Cat Cafe

Pet cafes are extremely popular in the entire Southeast Asia. While there are many options for cat cafes in Thailand, the Cat ‘n’ A Cup Café in Chiang Rai is one of the most popular cafes where you can pet cats while enjoying an Iced Thai Tea.

Take a Thai language class

Or if cooking isn’t your thing, you may wish to take a class to learn the Thai language. These classes are a great way to learn the basics of the Thai language and immerse yourself in the local culture. Classes are available at various levels and in various places throughout Chiang Mai. They are a great way to enhance your travels, but be prepared to learn, the Thai language takes a lot of practice.

Take a waterfall tour

And last but by no means least, another thing to do in Chiang Rai is to take a waterfall tour. Chiang Rai is home to a number of stunning waterfalls, including Doi Suthep, Mae Sa, and Mon Dao. You can enjoy scenic hikes, refreshing dips, and stunning views simultaneously. With knowledgeable guides and a variety of waterfalls to choose from, a waterfall tour is a great way to escape the city and experience the natural beauty of northern Thailand.

Waterfall tour

Things to do in Chiang Rai: Conclusion

And that brings an end to the 15 best things to do in Chiang Rai. It’s an unbelievably good part of Thailand, and you are guaranteed to have a great time. Regardless of what you choose to do there, Chiang Rai will create memories to last a lifetime. Whether you hike the mountains or simply explore the temples, you will leave with a positive image of Chiang Rai. Enjoy your trip!

How to Reach Nakhon Phanom?

Flight: It is well connected with Bangkok and there are 4 flights everyday with run time of 1 hour and 20 minutes

Best time to visit Nakhon Phanom

Like all Asian countries, best time to visit is in winter months (October to February) when the place is much cooler. I visited in June and it wasn’t so bad then. It rained in the afternoon and early mornings.

Nakhon Phanom Weather

The average summer temperature is 24°C-37°C; while the average winter temperature range from 18°C-30°C. It rains quite often around the year.

Must try food in Nakhon Phanom

Food forms a big part while talking about Nakhon Phanom itinerary. Sticky rice is a staple of Nakhon Phanom and it accompanies most meals. Isan food is quite prominently available which comprises of glutinous rice and chili peppers. All sorts of meat – pork, chicken, beef is part of the food preparation in various forms.

What to wear in Nakhon Phanom?

Comfortable clothing like cotton t-shirt and shorts is recommended. Women can choose a knee length dress. Try to cover shoulder and knees while visiting the temples.

Safety in Nakhon Phanom

It is an extremely safe town and people are really helpful. Everything closes down early – night market at 9pm and restaurants at 11pm.

I recommend you to book this tour through Thai Ecotourism and Adventure Travel Association (TEATA) so as to have an unparallel experience of the village. They will assist you in deciding which village to visit, depending upon the experience you want and the time of the year. Monsoon is a lean season as all villagers are busy in sowing paddy. Having experienced Community Based Tourism in Baradpani, this was something similar.

A village tour would you approximately 450 baht per person and includes the entry to the village and 2 meals. It excludes the transfer from Nakhon Phanom to the village and souvenir/product shopping if you indulge.

Sustainable Travel Tips for Nakhon Phanom Itinerary

Most hotels in Nakhon Phanom have refill water station – use it instead of buying PET bottles from 7-eleven stores.

Nakhon Phanom is still developing and opening up to tourism. Try buying food and clothes from a local market/food joint to boost their economy.

It is a clean town so do not add your waste to the streets. Always use a dustbin.

The entire SE Asia is railing in the single use plastic storm. Politely say no to a plastic bag when buying the soup or that beautiful indigo shirt!

Cover your knees and shoulders when visiting a pagoda.

According to Thailand’s Pollution Control Department (PCD) data, Thailand generates 4.4 billion PET drinking water bottles per year. As per my discussion with the Manager at Amari Residences, the management is trying their level best so as not to add to the environment load from their property. They also plan to phase out plastic straws with reusable ones in coming future.

I was completely blown over by the efforts of Amari Residences Bangkok and Amari Watergate Bangkok for sustainability. Stay with them and contribute a small footprint to the environment.
