Jawai Leopard Safari in Jawai Leopard Sanctuary was on my bucket list ever since I saw the documentary by the Discovery Channel. Before that, I had never heard about the place. Check out this detailed guide and my experience.

Imagine strikingly beautiful leopards against the ancient rugged Aravalli mountains!

Jawai is not a protected wildlife sanctuary nor a national park, however, leopards not only exist here but are increasing in population. Probably that is why the hills are known as Leopard Hills.

Just like the hills in the neighbouring areas of Sena, Bera, the leopards of Jawai make for the most beautiful cohabit with the villagers.

Interestingly there has been no major case of man-animal conflict reported in recent years. Just like the Maldharis (the local tribe of jungles) in Gir National Park, the Jawai leopards are living harmoniously in the midst of people.

Conservation in Jawai Leopard Sanctuary

This has been a debated topic for a long time. Though there has been no conflict between man and leopard, there is no check when it comes to the number of visitors and the location of sightings since there are no gates as in a typical safari. 

However, conservation efforts have been taken in the past few years by the Rajasthan forest department wherein there are trackers who track the movements of leopards.

Private lands are closed to outside visitors. And only the local hotel/resort owners are allowed to take visitors on safari.

An open-topped 4×4 safari gypsy is the standard vehicle operational in the area along with a guide is compulsory for safari.

There is also a unique relationship between the leopards and the red turban herdsmen of the semi-nomadic Rabari community, who have lived peacefully for centuries.

The goats and lambs are the primary food of the leopard but there is no hue or cry by the community even if the leopard kills one of them. The local government compensates the shepherd for their loss under the Van Dhan Yojana. Through the efforts of the local community, the leopards of Jawai, have not only increased in number but are also being talked about.

The Jawai hills were shaped by lava, millions of years ago, which have formed into natural caves that house the leopards. They eat the lambs and goats from herds that are plenty in the area. These leopards have adapted to a fast life – says Adam Bannister who believes that these felines lead relatively short lives owing to the unique landscape that is their home. As per my discussion with my guide, the latest figure stands at 55 leopards in an area of over 60km covering the villages of Jawai, Bera, Sena and other small villages.

The Jawai hills are located in the Pali district in the western state of Rajasthan. 

By road:

Jawai is approximately 140 km from Udaipur, 80km from Abu Road and 300km from Ahmedabad. Visitors can drive to Jawai from any of these locations. Bus services are also available.

By Train:

Jawai Bandh is an important station and a lot of trains on the western line stop here. 

By Air:

Closest airports to reach Jawai are Ahmedabad and Udaipur.

My experience with Jawai Leopard Safari

We drove from Ahmedabad to Jawai on Diwali day and reached around lunch. After a relaxed lunch at the hotel, we headed to the evening safari near the Jawai dam backwaters. This is the area most frequented by leopards and a sighting is almost guaranteed.

On the way, our guide looked over some hills from the road through the binoculars and drove around. At one point there was a dead end and we thought we had to turn back but to our surprise, we climbed the hill (almost at 45 degrees) in the gypsy to get a view of the higher hills. The view was spectacular but there was no leopard insight.

We turned around and went to another hill. There were already a couple of safari jeeps waiting and their binoculars all pointed in one direction. Our guide directed us to the location where a female leopard was resting.

We craned our necks and even with a good set of binoculars, it took us a good two minutes to locate her. Her camouflage was incredible. My 600mm camera could only cover this ground distance giving me a good leopard scape.

We watched her rest for sometime and then she disappeared in the buses. All that was left to devour was the granite formations, caves, the valley, cacti and the glistening water of Jawai dam.

Our guide informed us that Jawai Bandh is one of the largest water reservoirs in western Rajasthan and attracts an impressive array of birdlife and we should plan a trip in January to see some migratory species. Check the list of bird watching destinations around Ahmedabad.

There was a movement in the safari jeeps and we knew the leopard was out again. This time it was the naughty cub, maybe taking the risk of venturing out of the bush’s protection in spite of his mother telling him against it.

He rested, and jumped over to the next rock, before disappearing into the bushes again. The effortless grace of these leopards was mesmerising to watch against the pink hues of the sky on the other side. We enjoyed the quiet sunset and called it a day.

Next day morning safari brought it in a lot of excitement. We were near a hill in Bera at 6:30 am when it was still pitch dark.

One torchlight on the hill and our guide could locate a handsome male leopard near a cave. We waited for the dawn to break and then let the shutter fire away. And fire it did! The male leopard was comfortable in our company and at one point even enjoyed posing for us. It was a good show for over an hour.

Ranakpur should be on the list when planning a Udaipur itinerary. Ranakpur is only 100 km from Udaipur and certainly deserves a one day trip.

During my visit to Jawai Leopard Safari in Rajasthan, I decided to spend an afternoon seeking the blessings of Shree Parshwanath Swami at the Jain temple of Ranakpur.

A visit to Ranakpur is generally combined with a visit to Kumbhalgarh – second longest wall in the world. But, since my trip to Kumbhalgarh was already done, we drove back to Ahmedabad from Jawai via Ranakpur. 

Ranakpur Jain Mandir is one of the most important Jain temples in Jainism and ranks in the list of top 5 holy shrines of Jains. Ranakpur Jain temple is the largest Jain temple in India.

History of Ranakpur Jain Temple

In the 14th century, a local businessman Dharna Shah had a celestial vision of Adinath, the founder of the Jain religion. The vision was about temple construction. Without wasting any time he approached the then Rajput king Rana Kumbha for permission and support to build a temple to honour the great Saint Adinath.

After procuring the land and permission for temple construction, Dharna Shah went through many design proposals so that at least one matched his vision. The design submitted by an architect and chief sculptor was of Deepak. The initial plan was to build a seven-storied high temple. But even after 50 years, only three floors were made, that too was incomplete. After the installation of the idol of Adinath, the construction went on for 15 more years and was completed in the 15th century.

The Mughal army attacked the temple in the 17th century but the priests of the temple hid the main statues in the cellar of the temple. So, thankfully they were spared.

The architecture of Ranakpur Jain Temple

Ranakpur Jain temple is made of white marble and is situated on the foothills of Aravallis. It is spread across 48,000 square feet and is known for its intricacy and beautifully carved 1444 pillars, 426 columns, 89 domes, and 29 halls. It also has 84 underground chambers that were built to hide Jain idols in case of an attack.

The temple is built in the Maru-Gurjara style architecture, a style that is quite prevalent in the western states of India. The Rani-ki-vav, Patan is also built in this style.

Chaturmukh temple

Chaturmukh is the main temple in Ranakpur. This is the main shrine after the visitors descend from the steps. The idol sits on a huge raised platform, supported by numerous pillars. There are 4 entrances to the main chamber of the temple. Inside there are 4 huge, 6ft. tall, sparkling white marble idols of Saint Adinath. All are facing 4 different directions.

On the 2nd and 3rd floors, there are shrines housing 4 identical Jain Gods. The temple, therefore, is also called Chaturmukh Jain Temple.

The temple has distinctive domes, flags over the domes, shikhara, turrets and cupolas. In the garbhagriha, there is a 6-feet tall, white-coloured chaumukha idol of Adinath with four heads facing in four directions. The temple is famous for its beautiful carved idol of Parshvanatha made out of a single marble slab. The idol has 1008 snakeheads and numerous tails.

Unique pillars of Ranakpur Jain Temple

The entire weight of the magnanimous temple structure rests on intricately carved 1444 pillars. None of the pillars has the same design making it awe-inspiring. The unique feature of the pillar is that in spite of so many pillars, the sighting of the main idol is not restricted from any angle. The area is extremely well ventilated and cool with the passage of wind. 

Another amazing feature is that the colour of the pillars changes throughout the day depending upon the angle of sunlight and time of the day. The colour ranges from golden to orange to blue that the marble reflects.

I could not help but crane my neck to see the incredible ceiling. There are over 80 domes with intricate carvings done in marble even on the ceiling.

Decorated Arches

There were hundreds of decoratively sculptured arches in the temple, locally known as Toran. All the torans were carved out from a single stone. Unfortunately, after the Mughal attack, only three such orans exist today. These torans certainly reminded me of the Kirti Toran at Vadnagar.

One cannot miss the many sculptures of elephants in the temple. One of the elephant sculptures in the main hall is particularly of importance. As per a legend, by crawling under the belly of this elephant, the person’s wishes get completed. 

Don’t be surprised to see people of all ages trying their luck by ducking under this elephant.

Revival of Ranakpur Temple

I can’t imagine the real beauty of the temple before the Mughal attack happened. Alas, the original beauty lasted only for 200 years! Thankfully, its revival was undertaken by Shri Kasturbhai Lalbhai, the chief of Sheth Anandji Kalyanji Trust. With over 200 workers and artisans, he dedicated himself to the reconstruction of Ranakpur Mandir.

One can easily distinguish between the old and new sculptures that can be seen by colour differentiation.

Practical tips for visiting Ranakpur Jain Temple

Best time to visit Ranakpur Temple

The Somanathapura temple timing is 6:30 am to 8:00 pm and it is open on all days of the week. It is ideal to visit it in the early morning to avoid crowds and heat. 

The best time to visit the Jain temple is in the winter (November – March). Summers could be difficult for visitors due to heat. Monsoon would still have humidity and make the visit uncomfortable.

Like all other Jain temples, entry is free to Ranakpur Jain temple.

How to Reach Ranakpur Jain temple | Ranakpur temple location

The location of Ranakpur Jain Mandir Pali is in the Pali district of Rajasthan. Ranakpur does not have an airport but due to its close proximity to Udaipur, it can be easily reached.

By flight

Dabok Airport in Udaipur is the nearest domestic airport that has frequent flights to Delhi and Mumbai. From Udaipur, one can book a seat in government-run buses, private buses or private taxis.

By train

The nearest railway station is Udaipur Railway Station. Udaipur is well-connected with other cities of Rajasthan as well as India. There are frequent trains that run to and from Udaipur connecting Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Mumbai and Delhi. 

By road

Ranakpur Jain Temple can be easily added to road trips between Jodhpur and Udaipur. Buses to Ranakpur can be taken from the main bus stand at Udaipur. 

Hotels in Ranakpur: Where to stay

While there is a Jain Dharamshala that offers rooms to stay for travellers, on the temple premises, the rooms tend to be sold out frequently. You can check here. The non-air-conditioned room tariff begins from Rs. 300 per person. Although a visit to Ranakpur is a one day trip from Udaipur, in case you wish to stay in Ranakpur, there are many options.

Where to eat in Ranakpur

On the temple premises, there is a Ranakpur Tirth Bhojanshala that serves Jain food (without onion and garlic) three times a day. Breakfast is available from 7 am to 8:30 am lunch from 12 noon to 1:30 pm and dinner from 5 pm to 5:30 pm. Breakfast donation per person is Rs. 30 while for lunch and dinner is Rs. 60. The times are quite strict in case you want to have lunch here.

There are many roadside eateries and restaurants in Ranakpur serving snacks and meals all day long.

Kumbhalgarh fort like the many forts is a must-visit attraction in Rajasthan. Being near Udaipur, it is a popular choice for tourists.

Golden Temple, Falna

The Jain Golden Temple in Falna, a small town in Rajasthan has a unique attraction worldwide. It is the first temple that has been constructed by the people of the Jain community wherein the ladies of this village donated 90 kg for the idolization of the temple dome and Lord’s idol.

Sun Temple Lohargal

Sustainable travel tips for Ranakpur Jain temple

• Being an ancient temple, respect the structures by not sitting on them or drawing on them.
• Like every Hindu temple, devotees are not allowed to wear footwear. Please remove footwear outside the temple.
• Do not enter places that are closed off, and always follow the directions given by the temple security.
• Throw your garbage in the dustbins located at the entrance of the temple.
• Be respectful and be quiet as there are multiple signages everywhere suggesting the same. If you must speak, keep your voice very low.

Jaipur is a treat for photographers and social media fanatics. The pink city has amazing options to tick the most Instagram-worthy places in Jaipur that include forts, palaces, temples, museums, bazaars and colourful cafes.

With the enormous options, Jaipur needs a good week to check out all the places; however, I recommend spending at least 3 days in Jaipur.

The culturally vibrant capital of Rajasthan has different flavours, and it is only fair to capture the timeless charm of the city by walking the streets of Jaipur.

Here are my recommendations for the best places to visit in Jaipur through my visits over the years.

TOP PLACES TO VISIT IN JAIPUR, RAJASTHAN 

I have narrowed down the best places to see in Jaipur for you. These are the perfect highlights of Jaipur that can be covered in 2 or 3 days.

Amer Fort

Also known as Amber Fort, it is one of the most popular places to visit in Jaipur. While all forts in Rajasthan are head turners, Amer Fort is special in its own way.

Built over five centuries, by one of the navratnas (nine gems) in Akbar’s court, Raja Man Singh, Amber Fort (Amer) is a beautiful blend of Rajput and Mughal architecture.

It is a UNESCO World Heritage site made of sandstone and marble. Some of the highlights in the fort include the exhaustively painted Ganesh Pol with art motifs, Sheesh Mahal (Mirror palace), which is absolutely breathtaking, courtyards with manicured gardens and fountains, elaborately chiselled jharokas and beautifully adorned ceilings and walls.

Light and Sound shows also take place in the evening every day. The timings vary with the season.

Amer Fort Timings: 8:00 am to 5:30 pm

Amer Fort Entry fees: INR 25 for Indians, INR 550 for foreigners

Jaigarh Fort

Jaigarh Fort was built at the top of the Aravalli ranges for the safety of Amber (Jaipur) from its rivals. This was built as an extra layer of protection, and there is a tunnel leading to the Amber Palace.

Aravali hills, Sagar Lake, and Amer are all visible from the fort. In the Fort Museum, weapons have been meticulously preserved and displayed. There is also a cannon foundry there. Jaivana, the largest cannon on wheels in the world, is displayed at the fort.

In recent years, some parts of the palace, such as the kitchen, dining hall, and summer suites of kings and queens, have been closed to the public as a result of some thoughtless tourists or citizens damaging our wonderful heritage.

Jaigarh Fort Timings: 9 am to 4:30 pm 

Jaigarh Fort Entry fees: INR 35 for Indians, and INR 85 for Foreigners.

Nahargarh Fort 

Of the three forts in Jaipur, Nahargarh Fort really made me feel awe. The subtle frescoes on walls, pillars and ceiling are extremely spectacular. There are exhibits in some areas which make Nahargarh Fort stand out.

The terrace of Madhvendra Palace in Nahargarh Fort is also a popular spot in itself, as many movies have been shot here. It also gives a lovely bird’s eye view of the city. Another popular spot includes the stepwell at the entrance. 

King’s suit has been converted into a fine-dining Indian restaurant for visitors to eat and relax. The Glass Palace and Jaipur Wax museum are some of the significant aspects of Nahargarh Fort.

Nahargarh Fort timings: 10 am to 5:30 pm. 

Nahargarh Fort entry fees: INR 50 for Indians, and INR 200 for foreigners.

The Jaipur Wax Museum and Sheesh Mahal operate from 10 am to 6:30 pm daily. You need to buy a separate ticket for them that costs INR 500 for Indians and INR 700 for Foreign Nationals.

Jal Mahal

Jal Mahal literally means water palace and is located in the middle of Man Sagar Lake. Jal Mahal isn’t accessible, but the glimpse of it across the lake is beautiful, especially during sunset.

This 5-storey palace has 4 storeys beneath the surface of the water, which offers a unique underwater viewing experience. Rumour has it that a restaurant is being made here, but only time will tell.

A beautiful promenade is constructed around the lake’s periphery. There are local vendors selling souvenirs, snacks, musical instruments and photographers urging you to take a picture in Rajasthani attire. Since it gets very crowded in the evening, it practically becomes impossible to sit in peace or take a walk without someone poking to sell something.

Jal Mahal timings: Open 24 hours

Jal Mahal entry fees: Free

Hawa Mahal Jaipur

Situated in the heart of the city, Hawa Mahal is one of the best places to visit in Jaipur. Hawa Mahal translates to the palace of the winds and is a symbol of sheer magnificence, which is justified by the intricate architecture of the Rajput style.

The five-storeyed palace with over 950 tiny windows was built for the women who could watch the city from these tiny windows without being seen from outside. The tiny windows also served as air pockets for air circulation. 

Visitors can actually go inside the palace, which has a huge courtyard and buildings on three sides. One can’t help but praise the beautiful filigree work, arches, pillars and canopies in the red sandstone, as well as visit a museum showcasing ancient artefacts.

Hawa Mahal timings: 9 am to 5 pm. 

Hawa Mahal entry fees: INR 50 for Indians and INR 200 for foreign nationals.

City Palace, Jaipur

The official and current residence of Jaipur’s royal family, some parts of the Jaipur city palace are open for tourists to visit.

The architecture of the City Palace, Jaipur, is a blend of Rajasthani and Mughal style with hints of European architecture. The attractions in the Palace include Chandra Mahal, Mubarak Mahal (royal textile museum) and the four gates in the courtyard. Other places include gardens, museums and an art gallery. 

One of the most popular and visited places in the palace is Pritam Niwas Chowk, a square courtyard. It has four gates representing the four seasons.

The intricately designed peacock gate is one of its kind and represents the Autumn season. While the lotus gate symbolises Summer, the Leheriya gate of spring and the Rose gate of winter.

The Royal family resides at Chandra Mahal. In order to visit some of the beautiful rooms here, such as Royal Splendour and Royal Grandeur, tourists need to cough up INR 4500 separately, along with the city palace tickets.

Galtaji Temple

Located a few kilometres away from Jaipur, Galtaji temple is also known as the monkey temple. The temple is unique in the way that it’s home to the clan of monkeys, and thus the name.

A short hike takes you to the temple complex centred around a natural spring that channels water into seven huge pools.

The water is known to have healing properties ,and devotees believe that their sins wash away by bathing in this water.

Galtaji temple timings: 5 am to 9 pm.

Jantar Mantar

Talking about Jaipur highlights, one cannot miss out on this wonder. Jantar Mantar is one of the amazing places to visit in Jaipur.

This astronomical wonder is an excellent blend of ancient architecture and the history of astronomy in India. The brilliance of making the 14 astronomical structures in the bygone era is nothing but staggering. 

The structures were useful in predicting the locations of stars, eclipses and orbiting movements of the Earth around the sun. Jantar Mantar also hosts the world’s tallest sundial at 27 meters high.

Jantar Mantar Jaipur timings: 9 am to 4:30 pm.

Albert Hall Museum

Albert Hall is the oldest museum in Rajasthan.

People from all walks of life are attracted by its Indo-Gothic architecture and rare collection of traditional Indian and international artwork and handicrafts. 

The collection includes the king’s portraits, artefacts, handicrafts and paintings of the glorious past of the city and the royal families. The museum also houses one of the six ‘Egyptian Mummies in India’ that have gained international attention.

Albert Hall Museum timings: 9 am to 5:30 pm and 7 pm to 10 pm for night tours. The museum is closed on Tuesdays. 

Albert Hall Museum entry fees: INR 40 for Indians, and INR 300 for Foreigners.

Panna Meena ka Kund

In proximity to Amber Fort, Panna Meena ka Kund stands out for its architectural symmetry. The stepwell is one of the unique places to visit in Jaipur.

As I walked up the zigzag staircases, I was reminded of the Surya Kund stepwell in the Modhera Sun Temple premises and its jade coloured water.

Due to its unique architecture, it is popular for video shooting. Tourists are not allowed to go down the steps.

Patrika Gate

Out of all the places to visit in Jaipur, Patrika Gate is the latest addition and one of the most popular ones.

Through JLN Marg, you will pass a towering pink structure nestled among a beautiful garden – this is Jawahar Circle. The park is Asia’s largest circular park at a traffic signal.

The Patrika Gate marks the entrance to Jawahar Circle with its vividly beautiful, artistically intriguing, and meticulously designed exterior. Through its murals and motifs, the gate depicts the essence of Jaipur and its history.

There are many Instagrammable places in Rajasthan, but Patrika Gate is at the top of the list.

Jhalana Safari Park

The national park is home to many elusive animals and birds, and also offers activities like Leopard Safari, which makes it a fun place for every kind of tourist.

The morning and evening safaris are availabl,e and timings differ by an hour or so depending upon the season.

A gypsy safari with 6 people plus a driver and a guide costs between INR 4,500 to 5,500. Private safari tours are also available at higher prices.

Anokhi Museum of Hand Printing

Anokhi Museum is a textile museum dedicated to the traditional hand block printing method of Rajasthan. A well-maintained museum in Amer town, it has documented a detailed history of art and how it has evolved over the years. 

There are over a hundred hand-printed garments exhibited in the museum. Visitors can also see a live demonstration of making wooden blocks used for block printing as well as block printing on textiles. You can witness the artisans performing the art of hand block printing and can try printing your own scarf or T-shirt.

Anokhi Museum timings: 10:30 am to 5:30 pm. Closed on Mondays

Entry Fee: INR 80

Chokhi Dhani

Chokhi Dhani is a quintessential Rajasthani-themed village that lets you savour the quirks of Rajasthan under one roof.

It showcases the traditional Rajasthani folk dances such as Ghoomar, Kalbeliya, and Chari. There are other attractions and cultural things to do, such as Puppet shows, camel rides, and bullock cart rides, combined with authentic Rajasthani food. There is a henna stall too! There are local vendors selling traditional handicrafts as well.

Chokhi Dhani entry ticket: INR 900 per adult and INR 550 per child (height between 2.5 to 3.5 feet). This fee includes food and cultural events. 

Chokhi Dhani timings: 5 pm to 11 pm

Other places of interest in Jaipur are Birla Mandir, Rambagh Palace, Govind Dev Ji Temple, Ram Niwas Garden, Royal Gaitor Tumbas, Sisodia Rani Garden, Kanak Vrindavan, Raj Mandir, Moti Dungri Ganesh Temple, Amar Jawan Jyoti, and many more!

WHAT AND WHERE TO EAT IN JAIPUR

Pyaaz Kachori at Rawat Misthan Bhandar

Rajasthan and pyaaz kachoris go hand in hand. Pyaaz kachoris (a fried pastry filled with a spicy onion filling) is the most popular one; however, dal kachori (lentil filling) and mawa kachoris are munched on with equal enthusiasm. Mawa Kachori is a sweet delicacy with a stuffing of khoya and dipped in sugar syrup.

Dal-bati churma at Laxmi Mishthan Bhandar

One of the city’s oldest sweet stores and cafes, this shop has been serving traditional dal bati churma for decades. The unique blend of species and choice of lentils makes the taste stand out as compared to others. It is located near Johari Bazar in the old walled city zone and is commonly visited by shoppers who need a pit stop!

Ghewar at Sodhani sweet 

Ghewar is a disc-shaped Indian sweet having a honeycomb pattern. It is prepared using maida (refined flour) and ghee (clarified butter).

Ghewar is one of the most popular sweet shop chains in Jaipur that is famous not only for Ghewar but also for many other Rajasthani sweets. The original shop is in a small lane in Johari Bazar – Partanion Ka Rasta.

Other must-try food in Jaipur includes Gatte ki sabji, Ker Sangri ki Sabzi, and Rajasthani thali, amongst others.

Jaipur is famous for its traditional artistic jewellery, hand-printed textiles, carpets and dhurries, as well as camel leather bags and footwear. 

Even if you are not a shopping enthusiast, walking in the colourful markets and streets of Jaipur is a treat in itself!

HOW TO GET TO JAIPUR

By flight

Jaipur is well-connected by domestic and international flights. Sanganer Airport is located at a distance of 10 km from the city centre. The airport has flight connectivity with major Indian cities like Mumbai and Delhi.

By train

Jaipur is connected to almost all parts of the country via the competent and reliable Indian railway system. Delhi is only 4 hours away from Jaipur by train.

By road

Rajasthan has a good network of highways with well-maintained roads. Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation has a timely and affordable bus service between Delhi and Jaipur. There are AC and Non-AC Volvo buses that ply between other major cities of India, such as Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Indore, etc.

Getting Around Jaipur

While walking is the best way to explore the city, the distances between tourist places in Jaipur are huge.

Auto Rickshaws

Auto Rickshaws are quite popular in Jaipur and are considered a great way to get around the nearby attractions in Jaipur. While most autos would go on meter reading, the tourist areas ask for a flat rate (surge rates for tourists). It is best to finalise the price before riding.

Pink Auto Rickshaw is by women and for women’s transport. They are also easily available in the city.

App based taxis

Uber and Ola are easily available in the city and offer app-based rates. This is the safest way to travel long distances, and prices are fixed. Although the app doesn’t work at Nahargarh Fort and Jaigarh Fort due to network issues so there are chances you will have to hire a one-day cab at fixed rates.

Metro

Jaipur Metro’s Pink Line is operational and travels from Mansarovar through Civil Lines to the end at Chandpole. It covers a total of 9 stations. The metro fare ranges from INR 6 to INR 17. You can buy a one-day transport card by paying INR 50.

Winter (November to February) is the best time to visit any part of Rajasthan. Summers are harsh. Days are usually warm and evenings are lovely during August and September.

DO’s and DON’Ts FOR JAIPUR TRIP

• Plan to stay in Jaipur for at least 3 days to cover the highlights. This is not rushed and covers a good number of places.
• Avoid travelling to Jaipur during the summer months.
• Try to avoid buying souvenirs inside fort shops as they charge a lot more than the local shops. 
• The most convenient way to get around the city is by local rickshaw, auto, or taxi.
• Be cautious while buying jewellery or gemstones, as fake jewellery and gem scams are common here. Shop at trusted outlets.
• Wear comfortable shoes as you will be walking a lot.
• Be modest in clothing as India is conservative. Cover the shoulders in the temples.

SUSTAINABLE TIPS FOR PLACES TO VISIT IN JAIPUR

• Most places have drinking water facilities, so carry a reusable water bottle.
• India is a conservative country with hot weathe,r so wear the right clothes. Skirt and pants till knee level are good. Avoid spaghetti and tank tops. Cover your shoulders with a scarf if necessary.
• Choose local food wherever possible.
• Do not litter tourist places. Always use a dustbin.
• Do not harm the palace, forts and temple structures by carving or writing on it
• Do not enter places that are closed. You will not be allowed to get down in the stepwell.

Visitors to Rajasthan most certainly visit popular tourist destinations such as Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Udaipur. Sometimes they also visit little offbeat destinations such as Bundi but Dungarpur is not really on the radar of tourists.

Even tourists from Gujarat make quick visits to Mount Abu which is 4.5 hours away from Ahmedabad but Dungarpur which is 3 hours away is not considered. It is time to make small weekends count by taking a luxury staycation near Ahmedabad. 

There are many places to visit in Dungarpur, the erstwhile princely state, which can truly make this staycation a great holiday. Being an offbeat destination, one can choose to stay in Udai Bilas Palace, a heritage property situated on the banks of a lake overlooking the beautiful landscape.

HOW TO REACH DUNGARPUR

Located 120 km from Udaipur and 174 km from Ahmedabad, Dungarpur is connected via trains and roads.

By Road

Dungarpur is situated 20 km away from the NH8, which is why it is very well connected to the North and Western states of India. It is connected to all major towns and cities in Rajasthan via Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) buses as well as Gujarat and MP state-run buses.

By Train

Dungarpur has a train station and there is a train every day between Udaipur and Ahmedabad that connects Dungarpur. From the station, the town is 3 km away.

By Flight

The closest airport is Maharana Pratap Airport in Udaipur which is 120 km away and has good domestic traffic. However, for international travelers, Ahmedabad Airport is better. From the airport, a private taxi can be hired to Dungarpur. Udai Bilas also offers travel assistance and can book a car for visitors.

ABOUT UDAI BILAS PALACE

Combine old-world charm and heritage with modern amenities and you have a serene property called Udai Bilas Palace. The Udai Bilas Palace has been carefully restored from its origins and woven into a luxury property and has been welcoming guests for over a decade. 

Nestled on the banks of Gaib Sagar Lake, this luxurious property is a treasure trove of architectural corners and vintage appeal. 

The hosts are the Prince and Princess consort of the Dungarpur Royal family namely Shri Harshvardhan ji and Smt Priyadarshini ji. 

Here are all the details about my stay in Dungarpur, Rajasthan.

Booking and Check-in

We stayed at Udai Bilas Dungarpur over the Christmas weekend of 2022 and booked the property over call and got the confirmation over email.

We reached around the check-in time at 1 pm. Mr. Kalvendra Singh ji, the property manager was patiently waiting for us at the gate and with his warm smile welcomed us to the property. We were shown our suite and I was totally bowled over with details!

Rooms and Suite at Udai Bilas Palace Dungarpur

From the parking, we climb 3 steps to reach a huge garden lined with big trees. The rustling of leaves in the winter breeze is the only sound I hear. On one side is a mini bird zoo and on the other, a part of the palace converted into a hotel. There are a total of 22 rooms.

Suite Room

We climb 4 more steps to reach our suite. A huge room with 2 queen size beds and a family seating area welcomes us in a tastefully done room. The wallpaper, the wooden wardrobe, the study area, and the wooden chest are fine examples of exemplary aesthetics. The carpets try to keep the room warm from the cold wind blowing through windows.

As I walk to the bathroom, I notice more antiques that make one feel you are in no ordinary palace. The bathroom has all the modern amenities and still leaves a mark of heritage. 

As I close the windows and blind shades to protect me from the cold, I am drawn to another curtain that doesn’t seem to have a window behind it. It in fact opens into another small room. Another fantastic wallpaper, I whisper to myself thinking how the grand suites would be.

Standard Room

There are six standard rooms in the property that offer a peep into the royal lifestyle. Adorned with vintage upholstery and antique furniture, the rooms offer a chance to know the heritage.

Art Deco Suite

This suite has heavy influences from Europe. In this suite, the modern amenities merge seamlessly with antique furnishings to provide comfort to the well-traveled visitor. It opens to an even bigger study area and then a sit-out overlooking the in-house ‘One Pillared Palace’.

The Art Deco Suite has a lovely view of the Gaib Sagar Lake from the window on the other side.

Maharawal Suite

When rich heritage gets a touch of artistic restoration it is indeed a connoisseur’s paradise. The Maharawal Suite displays the very best of antiquities and vintage upholstery from the bygone era and even has ornate balustraded balconies, friezes, and arches. The mirror work is exemplary and nothing like I have seen anywhere. A window opens to the glimpse of the marble temple – Vijay Rajrajeshwer Temple. On the other side of the room, the window opens to the ‘One Pillared Palace’.

As I breathe in this royalty, I walk to the big study area with plush comfortable sofa chairs. 

Parallel to the study is a passage room to the bathroom with a floor seating area. The highlight of this room is that the ceiling and flooring are full of mirrors.

Food at Udai Bilas Dungarpur

Udai Bilas Dungarpur offers a Buffet option for the meals. Since guests mostly spend their days on the property or traveling to nearby places it is best to go for a full board plan (breakfast + lunch + dinner buffet). 

The meals are a divine gastronomic blend of homemade Rajasthani cuisine. Quality ingredients are picked, fresh vegetables are harvested from the in-house organic garden, and comfort food is served at picturesque locations on the property. The entire menu and food preparation are overseen by the Yuvrani herself which assures the best quality of food that is not too heavy in masalas and oil.

The lunch is served near the lake in a small garden. It is a 3-course meal wherein soup is served on the table and the rest is a buffet. We had Dal-Bati-Churma in one of the lunch meals and it was delicious. There is a bar in case one wants to order some drinks before their meal.

Hi-tea is served around the swimming pool. Sipping hot tea in the cool breeze while biting into steamy pakoras is a lovely way to spend the evening. The locally famous Hing Samosa is also sometimes served along with gud ki gajak, cookies, and finger sandwiches.

The dinner at Udai Bilas Palace is something not to be missed and the best way to experience royalty. Dinner is served at Jenana Chowk, a courtyard with a long marble dining table. This dining table has a water pool in the middle and inlay work along the edges. The dining table is further decked up with rose petals, candles, and fairy lights making visitors ‘wow’ at first sight!

The meals are traditional Rajasthani items with vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. Dahi wale aloo, laal maas and gatte ki sabji are on the menu along with bajri ki puri. The dessert is Ras Malai followed by Paan, the mouth freshener after such a scrumptious meal. 

The next day breakfast is served on the table adjacent to the marble table. This area has colorful glass chandeliers from the previous century. Breakfast is a mix of Gujarati + North Indian or South Indian snacks like khakhara, poha, idli sambhar, or aloo paratha. There is a live omelet counter as well as juices and fresh fruits.

UDAI BILAS PROPERTY TOUR | THINGS TO SEE

This is a perfect staycation option as there are many things to do and see in the property itself and one does not need to go out to get entertained.

Ek Thambia Mahal

Literally meaning a single-pillared palace, the structure was built using white marble and the locally available pareva and balwariya stones overlooking the Gaib Sagar Lake. 

The palace features intricate sculptured pillars and panels, spectacular arches, ornate balconies, bracketed windows, beautiful arches, and a frieze of marble carvings, a notable marvel of Rajput architecture. The palace is divided into three parts viz Udai Bilas, Raniwas, and Krishna Prakash. 

All other parts of the Palace were slowly added as an extension to Ek Thambia Mahal Dungarpur.

Ek Thambia Mahal is visible from Art Deco Suite and Maharawal Suite and can be passed while going to Jenana Chowk. It is possible to go up the ladder in Ek Thambia Mahal and see the sculptures up close and personal. Just request at the reception and someone will open up the door.

It is lit up in the evening and looks equally mesmerizing in dark.

Dungarpur Mews

This 19th-century Udai Bilas Palace boasts an elegant mew, which has been converted into a vintage car museum and is a must-visit for anyone who loves cars. A horse stable and a storage yard later, the mews house 40-odd cars from all the well-known brands.

A 1947 Packard Clipper Deluxe, a 1939 Fiat 7-seater saloon, a 1942 Willys MB Jeep, a 1952 Willys CJ3A, a 1950 Cadillac Series 62 convertible, a 1949 Standard Flying 14, a 1966 Volkswagen Beetle, and a 1975 Land Rover are some of them on display and all of them still in working condition. There is a scaled-down replica of the DH-5 aircraft.

Garage Bar

After heartily looking at each car and taking picture of it and it, there is a small door that leads visitors to the Garage Bar. literally meaning a bar in the garage. It houses all the possible car accessories, trinkets, murals, souvenirs, paintings, and quotes about motor vehicles. 

There are tire-shaped bar stools, sofa upholstery with car prints, and glass globes containing miniature cars that dangle from the roof. Every inch of the interior has a perfectly placed frame or accessory making it extremely aesthetic. 

To give it the perfect garage feeling, the entire bar actually sits on a hydraulic pump and goes 2 meters above the ground. Talking about being on cloud 9!

Outdoor / Indoor Games

A tennis court and table tennis table ensure the visitors are not bored. Also, there is enough space to play football and cricket.

Spa

The property offers carefully designed spa experiences that refresh and reinvigorate. There are three types of massages offered with different durations that are perfect for the body to relax and detox.

Swimming Pool

A swimming pool sits facing the Gaib Sagar lake, with stone-carved statues of elephants and crocodiles on its edge. It is designed in the infinity pool style overlooking the lake and marble temple.

Boating

Visitors staying at Udai Bilas Palace can go on a boat ride in Gaib Sagar Lake. Watching the sunset while paddling the slow boat is a great way to enjoy the evening. If you chose to go boating in the morning, there are ample birdwatching opportunities around the lake.

Birdwatching

The lake offers a perfect refuge to make species of endemic and migratory birds. Come winter and the lake is full of flocks of ducks and geese. There are even a few resident crocodiles that can be seen basking in the sun from the property. 

There are many benches around the property overlooking the lake that is perfect for a bird-watching sit-out. Don’t forget the binoculars and camera.

PLACES TO VISIT IN DUNGARPUR

If you want to step out of the property and see the town, then there are many options to amuse you. Some of them are

Juna Mahal

2 km away from Udai Bilas through the rickety roads, lies the much-dilapidated structure of Juna Mahal. It looks more like a fort than a palace with a fort wall behind it.

With two stories in the basement and five above, this seven-storied palace was made as a safe point from enemy attack in the 13th century. It is known to be the longest continuously inhabited palace in India as the royal family lived here from the 14th century to the early 20th century. 

What makes this palace unique is that each king who ruled here added art and made the interior unique. With narrow stairways up to the upper floor, it is a slow climb to discover what each floor unearths for visitors.

The first is the Darbar Hall, which holds the throne and a row of carpets leading to the throne from the bygone era. The entire hall is full of marble pillars, colorful glasswork, and painted ceilings. 

The Fateh Prakash Mahal is done up with mirror inlay motifs of flowers, birds, and animals, whereas the Jaali ka Mahal lives up to its name with exquisite latticework letting in breeze and sunlight. The Sheesh Mahal has some of the best Rajasthani mirror work I have seen. It surely reminded me of the one in Amer Fort, Jaipur.

Each floor is a revelation of miniature paintings, murals, and mirror work, some of which are fading with time and begging for attention. 

The topmost floor offers lovely views of Dungarpur town.

Shrinathji Temple

One of the places to visit in Dungarpur is Shrinathji Temple. A marble temple nestled on the banks of Gaib Sagar shines even at night from the Palace. 

A big complex with many smaller shrines leads to the main temple. Shrinathji Temple houses life-size idols of Lord Shrinath and Goddess Radhika. Adjacent to this temple is two other temples – one dedicated to Lord Ram and another dedicated to Shri Banke Bihari Ji.

Badal Mahal

Badal Mahal is one of the popular tourist spots in Dungarpur for the locals. Overlooking the Gaib Sagar Lake and the artificial fountains, Badal Mahal is a big area that houses a palace-like structure that is now converted into a museum. Locals enjoy their picnic and snack time here during sunset.

Dungarpur War Museum

A war museum is created to give information about Indian Armed Forces including the army, navy, and air force. The foundation dates, important events, and uniforms are displayed in this small museum.

This museum surely reminded me of my visit to National War Memorial, Delhi.

FINAL THOUGHTS ABOUT UDAI BILAS PALACE DUNGARPUR

Although a palace, this elegantly designed and aesthetically pleasing luxurious stay has a warm, homely feeling. I can safely say that it is a royal ‘homestay’ that radiates charm, warmth, and grace. The hosts and the staff is friendly and one can easily pick up a conversation with them. The warm hospitality is a warrant I would love to come back and stay here.

I had the perfect weekend getaway from Ahmedabad.

Whether you are taking a transit break in Bundi, Rajasthan, or want to explore this offbeat place in Rajasthan, Bundi is a treasure trove of architectural spaces. 

While Jaipur and Udaipur are grander in size and places, Bundi is a small yet impactful version of what Rajasthan has to offer.

Bundi can be best explored at a slow pace on foot. The narrow streets and labyrinth alleys are waiting to be discovered with gems.

I stopped here for half a day while on the way back to Ahmedabad from Ranthambore. 

Bundi Tourist Places | Best Places to visit in Bundi

A Fort, palace, stepwells and the entire town painted in colors is how the town treats visitors. The best thing about this town is the opportunity to stay in a haveli from yesteryears. 

Known as the “city of step wells”, Bundi is home to over 50 stepwells, mostly dotted throughout the city and surrounds, and visiting the popular ones is one of the best things to do in Bundi.

Walking Tour in Bundi

I love exploring new places on foot because that’s where you discover offbeat things. Unlike guided heritage tours like Ahmedabad Heritage Walk, a walking tour in Bundi is a self-walk.

Bundi encourages visitors to walk because honestly it is difficult to drive a car in those narrow lanes. 2 cars cannot pass parallel and there are other blockages like dogs, cows, and 2-wheelers on the road.

Bundi is a fascinating old town, situated under the imposing Garh Fort. It is best to explore the town in the late afternoons or early mornings to get the real flavor. A tea vendor boiling his finest ginger tea, dogs intermingling with the road traffic, women chit-chatting with each other about the latest television episode, monkeys looking for an opportunity to snatch food from unattended carts – all of this amongst the colourful painted houses.

If you are a street photographer or an artist, you are in for a real treat as there are ample opportunities to click and paint in Bundi!

The friendly locals also chat about the place you come from, casually asking about which places you have been to and will be visiting in Rajasthan.

Garh Palace, Bundi

Exploring the historic Garh palace complex is one of the best things to do in Bundi. The palace overlooking the city is a treat in itself.

Constructed by Rao Raja Ratan Singh in the early 16th century, this was a grand palace once a time. However, the Garh Palace of Bundi is presently in ruins. As compared to the other palaces in Rajasthan such as City Palace Jaipur, City Palace Udaipur, Udai Bhawan Palace Jodhpur, Bundi palace is not in great shape.

Some of the places have been restored while some still portray the bygone era – faded frescos, colourful walls, ruined sculptures, etc.

I recommend taking a guided tour of the Grah Palace and Taragarh Fort as this will provide you with a great understanding of the history and importance of the monument. Guides can be arranged at the entrance to the Palace, or at your hotel.

Some of the must-visit places in Garh Palace Bundi are:

Hathi Pol 

The first gate after getting the entry ticket in Hathi Pol. One has to climb a rather steep inclination to reach here.

The impressive entry to the Garh palace, Hathi Pol is made up of two elephants depicted blowing bugles. A security guard will check entry tickets and also enter details in a visitor’s diary such as name, contact number, and where you came from.

The courtyard is not very impressive and has plain walls with arches. It is actually a stable for nine horses and elephants.

Ratan Daulat

A royal court, built in a manner that it forms stables for nine horses and elephants.

Singhasan or Hall of Public Audience 

The Hall of Public Audience is a white marble coronation throne installed in a big hall of pillars. It overlooks the stables below.

Chhatra Mahal

The main attraction of Chhatra Mahal is the miniature murals in bright colours inside an arch. The side of the ceilings is also painted in beautiful frescoes with blue paint. Besides this, each pillar in this place has four wooden elephants on the top, and doors are made with glass and ivory work. The frescoes here reminded me of the Frescoes of Tambekar Wada, Vadodara.

Viewpoint

It is a vantage point from the palace that gives a bird’s eye view of the entire Bundi city along with the lake. On the other side, part of the fort wall is also visible.

Phool Mahal

Phool Mahal is divided into two storeys – the lower one is Phool Mahal and the upper one is Badal Mahal. Both were used by Queens of the Bundi state. Phool Mahal has exquisite paintings on the walls and ceiling of the palace – some of Bundi Palace’s finest miniature paintings. They’re the best-preserved paintings in the complex. There are even mirrors placed on the pillars and walls.

Badal Mahal  

The Palace’s crowning glory is the Badal Mahal. Depicting scenes from Indian mythology, the small room is filled with colourful and intricate murals from the ceiling to the walls. The paintings date back to the late 16th century. 

These wall paintings reminded me of Mattancherry Palace Museum in Fort Kochi wherein efforts are being taken to preserve them. I wish the same in done for the spectacular paintings in Badal Mahal in Bundi.

Chitrashala 

Although Chitrashala is part of the Garh Palace and Taragarh fort complex, entry to this place is separate and free!

Chitrashala literally translates to the art gallery, and one has to take major efforts to reach here. And it is worth it!

Visitors have to go down the slippery inclination of Garh Palace and climb the next to reach Chitrasala all the while being brave passing through the army of monkeys!

Chitrashala is hands down the best places to visit in Bundi. The entire hall is lined with murals, wall paintings, and artworks related to Hindu mythology, recreational scenes, and warfare.

As soon as I climbed the steps to enter this gallery, a security guard instructed me – no flash photography and no videos. I nodded as I started observing the paintings. Probably my inquisitiveness made him explain some of the depictions. 

Scenes from Ramayana and Krishna Leela adorned the walls and ceiling with real gold and silver elements used in them. He even pointed out to the garden outside saying that one painting here depicts the same.

I was spellbound by the murals and mirrorwork on the walls and ceilings of the Chitrashala. They were very impressive and maintained quite well.

It was 5 pm by the time I finished observing every painting minutely in Chitrashala and tipped the guard for sharing his knowledge with me. I inquired if I should take up the hike to Taragarh fort and he asked me if I am alone. He advised me not to go alone as I won’t be able to guard myself against the monkey army, plus very few tourists would be there so it would not be safe as it would get dark soon. I agreed to his premise and skipped going to the top of the fort.

Taragarh Fort, Bundi

Taragarh Fort is the amalgamation of Mughal, Rajput, and colonial styles of architecture.

Located above Bundi Palace, the Taragarh Fort mostly lies in ruins. It provides the best views of the city. Although it’s also in a state of decay, it is worth the walk to look down upon the blue hues of this colourful city.

Nawal Sagar Lake

The first thing that every visitor will see while coming to Bundi is Nawal Sagar Lake and the reflection of Garh Palace in its pristine waters. It is a square-shaped artificial lake. There is a small temple in the corner of the lake.

There are many cafes and homestays around this offering a lake view. I feel visitors can take a walk and chill at the banks in the evening.

Raniji-ki-Baori 

Honestly, I had high expectations from Raniji-ki-Baori thanks to Instagram reels. The expectations were high because of my visit to the grander and amazing stepwells such as Rani-ki-vav, Patan, Panna Meena ka Kund, Jaipur, Agrasen ki Baoli, Delhi and Sevasi Vav, Vadodara. All of them have intricate carvings and are very well maintained.

However, I was taken aback by the stinking water as soon as I entered Raniji-ki-Baori. The unbearable stench from the rotting water was extremely unsettling and all I could think about was the neglect of such a beautiful place. This private bath of one of Bundi’s queens now lies in shambles. 

In spite of the stink, Raniji-ki-Baori is the most beautiful stepwell in Bundi. Constructed in the early 16th century by Queen Nathavati, the stepwell is multi-tiered and 150 feet deep. Depending upon the monsoon the level of water in the stepwell is low or high.

The stepwell has intricate arches with elephants on the corner pillars giving it a very royal look. There are a few intricate carvings in the shape of temples on the stepwell walls.

Dabhai Kund 

Bundi visiting places includes another stepwell called Dabhai Kund. I was excited about visiting this one because of the invested pyramid shape like the Suraj Kund of Modhera Sun Temple. Unfortunately, the recent excessive spell of rain had filled enough water that none of the inverted steps were visible.

The algae-laden water also had visible trash suggesting that this was also not maintained.

84-pillared Cenotaph

Talking about Bundi tourist places, one cannot forget the 84-pillared cenotaph. Constructed in the 16th century by the Maharaja Rao Raja Anirudh in memory of his foster brother Deva, the structure is covered by a decorated roof that has 84 pillars.

The structure as such does not have any carvings but the outer walls have interesting sculptures. The cenotaph has a Shivling in the middle of the structure.

The Cenotaph is lit up in the evenings which is when it looks the best.

Lakshmi Nath Temple

Shri Laxminath is one of the oldest temples of Bundi. It graces the sacred sanctum of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Laxmi. Other than the beautiful idol, this temple has exquisite carvings on the outer wall.

Sukh Mahal and Jait Sagar lake

Sukh Mahal is one of the best places to visit in Bundi. It is said that the English novelist Rudyard Kipling spent a couple of days in this summer palace overlooking the Jait Sagar lake. Mr. Kipling spent a few days here and wrote parts of The Jungle Book in this palace.

The palace is a bumpy ride away from the town center but the views are worth the ride. Especially with the lotuses in full bloom in the Jait Sagar lake.

The complex has a garden with a sitting area and another seating place overlooking the lake and palace. The palace doesn’t have much to see other than some photos from yesteryears.

Bundi Government Museum

Situated in the Sukh Mahal complex, Bundi Government Museum has 3 small galleries – A sculpture gallery, a Miniature painting gallery, and a Weapon gallery.

It is a nicely maintained museum and can be visited when visiting Jait Sagar.

Bhimlat falls

Things to do in Bundi and around include visiting Bhimlat waterfalls, a popular picnic spot for the locals as well as tourists. It is a welcome change from all the havelis, forts, and palaces of Rajasthan. 

The waterfalls look alluring from the viewing gallery as well as from the water pool. Go for a swim in the refreshing water.

Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve

While Ranthambore National Park is one of the most frequently visited and popular tiger parks in Rajasthan, Ramgarh Vishdhari is the 4th tiger reserve in state. Ramgarh Vishdhari wildlife sanctuary is located 45 km from Bundi town. 

The sanctuary is rich in biodiversity and also has good architecturally rich places such as havelis, chattris, and temples, making it a must-visit.

Best time to visit Bundi

The best time to visit Bundi is during the months of winter that is October to March. Bundi has a semi-arid climate with high temperatures throughout the year which makes the summers long, hot, and dry. Summers are extremely harsh and last from March to June. Monsoons are a bit pleasant but it is still humid and uncomfortable.

Where to stay in Bundi

The best thing about Bundi is that it is a small town. There are hardly any hotels here but old family mansions (locally known as Haveli) turned into homestays or AirBnBs.

I chose to stay at Dev Niwas which was recommended by a lot of travelers and had good ratings online. The best part about the homestay is the view from their restaurant and terrace.

As it is in the small alleys of the town, the homestay owner provides a shuttle service from the palace parking area where one can park their car. 

Situated in one of the most humble alleys, it is impossible to imagine that a small alley gives way to a huge 2-storeyed haveli with over 10 rooms. The courtyard has ample space overlooking the rooms and reception area. There are 2 kinds of rooms – Standard and Deluxe and both have enough space. The rooms and bathrooms are extremely clean and comfortable.

The homestay is artistically well-maintained with beautiful Rajasthani artifacts, weapons, and paintings.

A restaurant on the top floor overlooking the Garh Palace and Taragarh fort is the highlight as well as the distance – it is located only 500 meters from the fort. Basically, most attractions are within a walking distance from the homestay.

How to Reach Bundi

Bundi is not a typical tourist place and that is exactly why there are no direct flights or trains to the town. 

By Road

The best way to get to Bundi is via bus, with connections to Kota which is a bigger city. Kota is further connected to Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Ajmer.

If you’re heading to Bundi by road from Ranthambhore, take the route via Bijoliya and not Kota. the roads are very smooth and good without any traffic congestion. One can reach it easily within 2.5 hours.

By Train

Bundi station is located 4 km from center of town but has less connectivity. The best way to connect is via the town of Kota, which is  40 km away. Kota is on the main train line from Delhi to Mumbai, so getting a proper connection is much easier. Visitors can hire a taxi from Kota railway station to Bundi. Alternatively, local buses also ply the road.

By Flight

The nearest airport to Bundi is Jaipur (215 km) which has domestic and international connections. From Jaipur, one can take a train to Kota and then a taxi to Bundi or a direct bus. 

Getting around Bundi

Bundi is an easy and inexpensive city to get around if you’re staying close to the center of town. While it is ideal to explore the town on foot, the open gutters and vehicle obstruction may suck the joy out of traveling.

Auto rickshaw

Auto rickshaw is an easy and inexpensive way to get around Bundi. Since I only had half a day to explore the town and certain highlights to visit, I decided to hire an auto.

He agreed to take us to 7 places in Bundi which would approximately take 2.5-3 hours (including waiting time) for INR 500. We were 4 people so it was a good deal for us. He dropped us at the Garh Palace and we decided to walk back from there.

Is Bundi worth visiting?

Bundi is definitely worth visiting if you are looking for authentic Rajasthani culture and bespoke architecture. Although it is beautiful, Bundi places lack maintenance so be warned that there be a lot of ruins, stinking water, open grey-water gutters and an army of monkeys. This does not deter tourists to come here.

Do’s and Don’ts for Things to do in Bundi

• Bundi and its nearby areas are extremely hot and humid during the day. I visited at end of October which is monsoon and yet it was not pleasant. It is best to carry a cap/hat/stole and sunglasses. 
• Wear clothes that are loose, comfortable, and sweat-absorbing.
• Wear a pair of comfortable footwear as you will walk a lot covering all the places to visit in Bundi.
• Carry a bottle of water and some snacks for a quick hunger bite. Keep the snacks tucked in a bag so as not to be visible to the resident monkeys. They will snatch it away!
• If you want to see both the Garh Palace and the fort, buy the extra ticket right at the entry, because no one will tell you to. 
• Flash Photography and videography are prohibited in certain rooms of the palace so please respect them.
• The Bundi Festival (‘Bundi Utsav) is held in November or December every year, depending on the Hindu calendar. It is a great time to visit.
• There are many locals selling tea and snacks in Bundi. A refreshing cup of chai can do wonders after all the walks around the town. Highly recommend trying at Sanwariya Restaurant.

• Respect the sculptures by not sitting on them. 
• Do not harm the sculptures by carving, writing, or spitting on them.
• Do not enter places that are closed off, there’s a reason why they are closed.
• Dispose of garbage in the dustbins located at specific points.
• Treat these monuments with respect and do not use them for picnics.

3 days Jaipur Itinerary

This 3 days Jaipur travel itinerary covers almost everything to do in Jaipur and the important places to visit. This itinerary is designed with the intention of exploring a mix of culture, architecture, temples as well as unusual attractions in Jaipur. 

The list of places to visit in Jaipur is a long one and 3 days is like scratching the surface. Now, it is time to list out a perfect travel itinerary for Jaipur for 3 days.

DAY 1: City Palace, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar, Shopping and Patrika gate.

City Palace Jaipur

The architecture of City Palace Jaipur is the perfect blend of Rajasthani, Mughal as well and European. The attractions in the Palace include Chandra Mahal, Mubarak Mahal (royal textile museum) and the four gates in the courtyard.

Other places include gardens, museums and an art gallery. These places prove how creativity and design can blend to form an exquisite symbol. 

One of the most popular and visited places in the palace is the third courtyard. It has four gates representing the four seasons.

The intricately designed peacock gate is one of its kind and represents the Autumn season. While the lotus gate symbolises Summer, the Leheriya gate of spring and the Rose gate of winter.

Visitors have to shell out some extra money for some of the pricey places, as the area is still the residence of the current prince.

Jantar Mantar

If you have not been to Jantar Mantar Delhi, then this one has to be on Jaipur itinerary. It is located only a few meters from the City Palace. 

The brilliance of making the 14 astronomical structures in the bygone era is nothing but mind-boggling for an engineer. The structures were useful in predicting the locations of stars, eclipses and orbiting movements of the Earth around the sun. Jantar Mantar also hosts the world’s tallest sundial at 27 meters high.

Gaitore Ki Chatriyan 

Gaitore ki Chatriyan is the royal crematorium grounds in Jaipur. These Chhatris have beautiful sculptures and structures and must be on your 3 days Jaipur itinerary.

Similar Chhatris are found in Indore, Bhuj and Gwalior.

Hawa Mahal 

A visit to Hawa Mahal is the highlight of 3 days Jaipur Itinerary.

Situated in the heart of the city, Hawa Mahal is hard to miss, whether you are a local or a tourist. Visitors are guaranteed to cross it a couple of times during their stay in Jaipur.

Hawa Mahal translates to the palace of the winds and is a symbol of sheer magnificence, which is justified by the intricate architecture of the Rajput style.

The five-storeyed palace with over 950 tiny windows was built for the women who could watch the city from these tiny windows without being seen from outside. The tiny windows also served as air pockets for air circulation. 

Visitors can actually go inside the palace, which has a huge courtyard and buildings on three sides. One can’t help but praise the beautiful filigree work, arches, pillars and canopies in the red sandstone, as well as visit a museum showcasing ancient artefacts.

Shopping in Jaipur

Shopping in Jaipur has to be on the 3 days Jaipur itinerary. One cannot miss the vibrant bazaars and colourful stuff to carry back home.

The street outside Hawa Mahal is a great option for street shopping. From souvenirs to textiles to silver jewellery, everything is available here. However, the following bazaars are some of the oldest bazaars selling amazing stuff!

Patrika Gate 

Known to be the most photographed gate, Patrika Gate is the latest awe-inspiring and vibrant addition to Jaipur. Added to the list of top places to visit in Jaipur, Patrika Gate is the latest addition to the city.

It was completed in 2016 and serves as an entrance to the largest circular park in Asia, Jawahar Circle Garden.

Patrika Gate is one of the favourite places to visit for couples and a popular place for professional and pre-wedding photoshoots in Jaipur.

DAY 2: Amer and around

Amer Fort

Also known as Amber Fort, it is one of the prime attractions and rightly so due to its beautiful Indian-Mughal architecture in marble and red sandstone. The UNESCO Heritage site has four levels, each having a courtyard.

The Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace) is absolutely breathtaking and hence one of the most crowded places.

I spent most of my morning in Amer Fort, climbing the various staircases and then relaxing in the courtyard, trying to imagine the fort in its grandeur during yesteryears when it served as a royal residence.

Panna Meena ka Kund, Amer

Panna Meena ka Kund is located 1.5km from Amer Fort and can be reached on foot.

Panna Meena ka Kund is an ancient stepwell that has shot to fame due to the many Bollywood movie videos shot here. It is one of the popular architectural marvels of Jaipur.

Like all stepwells, this stepwell was also constructed with the purpose of storing and supplying water to the locals of Amer town.

Anokhi Museum

A stone’s throw away from Meena Panna ka Kund is the textile museum dedicated to the traditional hand block printing method of Rajasthan. It is a really well-maintained museum detailing the history of art and how it has evolved over the years. 

There are over a hundred hand-printed garments exhibited in the museum. Visitors can also see a live demonstration of making wooden blocks used for block printing as well as block printing on textiles.

Jaigarh Fort

After 45 minutes of riding in an auto over a steep hill with fantastic views, I reached Jaigarh fort.

It is another top Jaipur sightseeing attraction that is popular for the world’s largest cannon on wheels – Jaivana Cannon. Weighing 50 tonnes and having a 20.19-foot barrel, it is capable of firing in all directions.

The fort was used for manufacturing artillery. Also, a significant structure of the medieval period – Diwa Burj – has been maintained very well and is a must-visit. 

Nahargarh Fort

Nahargarh Fort serves as the highest spot in the city and is popular for sensational sunsets overlooking Jaipur city.

Nahargarh is one of the best palaces and forts in Rajasthan, and an enchanting spot for sightseeing in Jaipur.

Earlier known as Sudarshangarh, it was named Nahargarh after the tigers which roamed around freely in the area. The palace features the Madhavendra Bhawan which has 12 identical suites for the queens.

The suites were constructed in such a way that the Maharaja could visit any of the queen’s rooms without the others finding out. The canary-coloured frescos in the interior of this palace speak of the opulence of the bygone era.

Jaipur Blue Pottery

Blue pottery is very native to Jaipur and I wanted to see the beautiful handicrafts still thriving in the city. 

I decided to visit the Jaipur blue pottery art centre on Amer road while returning to the city. 

I was given a quick demonstration of how blue pottery is made and the amount of work that goes into making each piece unique. However, the baking and final touches of a product can only be seen in a working factory in Sanganer.

I was blown away by the choices of products one could buy as a souvenir or for utility. I only clicked photos. (Note: Photography is not allowed but I got special permission to do so).

Jal Mahal

Jal Mahal translated as water palace is located in the middle of Man Sagar Lake, and definitely comes up on the Jaipur sightseeing map.

This 5-storey palace has 4 storeys beneath the surface of the water that offers a unique underwater viewing experience. The architecture is a fusion of Mughal and Rajput styles. However, it was closed for renovation when I went but it still paints a pretty picture from the main road.

DAY 3: Galtaji Temple, Albert Hall Museum, Sisodia Rani Bagh and Chokhi Dani

Galtaji Temple

Galtaji Temple is a popular tourist attraction in Jaipur as it is home to a large colony of monkeys. This has given rise to the common name of the complex known as the monkey temple. Situated within the hilly regions of the Aravalli hills, Galtaji temple is an important Hindu pilgrimage centre. The temple is surrounded by hills filled with vegetation and natural springs, which fill up seven sacred kunds (water tanks). The temple’s unique architecture, beautiful pavilions and unique position make it a vision to behold for any visitor.

Visit Albert Hall Museum

Albert Hall Museum, also known as the Government Central Museum, has a collection of local kings’ portraits, artefacts, handicrafts and paintings of the glorious past of the city and the royal families. This is also home to one of the six ‘Egyptian Mummies in India’ that has brought a lot of international acclaim to this museum.

Sisodia Rani ka Bagh

A royal garden in Jaipur, Sisodia Rani ka Bagh, boasts amazing flowerbeds, galleries, water channels, and natural attractions. It is believed that this garden was used by the queen for relaxation. 

Many mural paintings around the garden make it a unique place to visit.

Choki Dhani Jaipur

Chokhi Dhani is a village-themed resort in Jaipur. 

It serves delicious and traditional Rajasthani food and combines it with folk music, puppet shows, magic shows and other cultural celebrations.

Jaipur’s famous food

While in the city, one must try Jaipur’s famous food. Cafes, as well as street hawkers, serve these food items with equal enthusiasm. 

Dal-Baati-Churma

This is the first thing that comes to mind when someone talks of Rajasthan food. 

Every food joint and restaurant serves this and is a favourite of locals and tourists alike.  

As the name suggests, it is a combination of 3 different kinds of dishes, eaten together in such a way that they complement each other. Baati are small wheat bread balls that are dipped in pure ghee and served with Dal (lentils). Churma is a sweet dish created using crushed baati with added ghee and jaggery.

Ghewar

Ghewar is the traditional dessert of Jaipur and a must-try. 

A honeycomb disk that is made with all-purpose flour, fried in ghee and then soaked in sugar syrup. It is finally topped with loads of fry fruits. There are many varieties of Ghewar, like Malai, Plain, Paneer, etc. 

It has a good shelf life, so one can easily carry it back home (do mind oodles of ghee and syrup).

Kachori

Rajasthan and Kachori go hand in hand. While traditionally Kachoris are made with lentils, Kachori in Jaipur is made with onion filling, giving it the name – Pyaaz ki Kachori.

It is a staple food and is generally consumed for breakfast, and is available in most of the namkeen shops of the city. 

Ker Sangri ki Sabzi

Ker Sangri is a Rajasthani delicacy that is made using dried Ker Berries and Sangri Beans. The berries and beans are soaked in water and then cooked with curd and everyday masalas. 

It is generally served with the Makke or Bajre ki Roti.

Gatte ki Sabzi

Gatte ki Sabzi is another must-try food in Jaipur. 

It is made using gram flour and curd-based curry. Served with hot Rotis, this is a complete and homely meal loved by one and all.

By flight

Jaipur is well-connected by domestic and international flights. Sanganer Airport is located at a distance of 10 km from the city centre. The airport has flight connectivity with major Indian cities like Mumbai and Delhi.

Jaipur is connected to almost all parts of the country via the competent and reliable Indian railway system. Delhi is only 4 hours away from Jaipur by train.

By road

Rajasthan has a good network of highways with well-maintained roads. Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation has a timely and affordable bus service between Delhi and Jaipur. Samode Palace

Samode Palace is one of the most beautiful palaces in Rajasthan. A guided tour takes you around the palace which is full of colourful walls, well adorned with miniature paintings and some with mirror work and then some paintings. Each room has a colour of its own like a boutique hotel.

Sanganer

Sanganer is about 20 km from Jaipur and is the textile town of Rajasthan. If you know and love block prints, the Sanganeri prints will bowl you over. Watch them come alive in front of your eyes in Sanganer.

Chand Baori, Abhaneri

Abhaneri is located about 90 km from Jaipur. Chand Baori is a beautiful stepwell located in Abhaneri that has geometric steps going down on three sides and a carved pavilion on the third.

• Most tourist attractions in Jaipur are huge complexes and will require visitors to walk a lot. Wearing comfortable footwear is recommended.
• Most places are wheelchair friendly.
• The best time to visit Jaipur is between November and February, when the weather is pleasant.

• Most places have drinking water facilities, so carry a reusable water bottle.
• India is a conservative country with hot weather, so wear the right clothes. Skirt and pants till knee level are good. Avoid spaghetti and tank tops. Cover your shoulders with a scarf if necessary.
• Choose local food wherever possible.
• Do not litter tourist places. Always use a dustbin.
• Do not harm the palace, forts and temple structures by carving or writing on them.

Things to do in Udaipur

Jagdish temple, Udaipur

Start sightseeing in Udaipur by taking blessings from Lord Vishnu at the Jagdish temple. 

Located in the center of the city, Jagdish temple is a large Hindu temple with historic importance. Earlier known as the temple of Jagannath Rai, this is one of the best places to visit in Udaipur. 

It is considered important for worship but brings architecture enthusiasts to this temple. The carvings on the exterior of the temple are stunning. Eklingji temple near Udaipur is another gem.

This three-storied temple is built on a raised platform and flaunts magnificently carved pillars, huge airy halls, and painted walls that are adorned with vibrant colours and intricately decorated ceilings which showcases Indo-Aryan architecture which is why it is one of the best architectural wonders of Rajasthan. 

The elephant carving certainly reminded me of the Mahakuta Temples of Karnataka and Modhera Sun Temple, Gujarat. 

There is no entry ticket to the temple however if you wish to worship the deity, the temple doors open in two shifts –  4:15 am to 1:00 pm and 5:15 pm to 8 pm.

Feel like a royal at the Udaipur City Palace 

The most popular spot in Udaipur – The City Palace deserves a visit. 

City Palace Udaipur is one of the largest palace complexes in Rajasthan and visitors will feel every bit of royalty in almost every nook and corner. 

Located on the banks of Pichola lake with Aravalli hills as a backdrop, its extravagant opulence is noticeable everywhere. 

The palace is built with white marble and granite and the interiors are beautifully decorated with silver work, mirror work, inlay work, glass paintings, and murals. Explore the Jag Mandir Palace Udaipur

Feel small at Badi Lake

Situated 13km away from the city center is Badi Lake also known as Jiyan Sagar. Shop till you drop at Shilpgram Udaipur

Once you leave Badi lake and are towards the city, make a stop at Shilpgram, a living museum of traditional Rajasthani arts and crafts. It has a plethora of things to see and do if you have the time. 

If it’s a quick visit, you can shop for souvenirs right here and learn a little bit about the state’s culture. Possible things to shop for include paintings, ceramics, wooden handicrafts, clothes, etc. 

There are live performances in the amphitheater and you can check the timings of the same at the entrance gate.

Lake hopping at Fatehsagar Lake

I would suggest driving across Fatehsagar Lake and taking in the views of blue waters and having lunch at one of the restaurants with a lake view. 

Amidst the view of beautiful Aravalli hills and forests, the Fateh Sagar Lake looks beautiful. Like the other lakes, watching a sunset here is beautiful but since we need to adhere to an itinerary, I would suggest spending time at one of the lakes only. 

This lake has a periphery and enough space to walk around it, unlike Pichola lake which is crammed with restaurants, boats, and hotels. 

One can choose to take a morning walk or post-dinner walk here while eating ice cream from local stalls, making it one of the best places to visit in Udaipur for couples.

Saheliyon ki Badi

Saheliyon ki Bari translated as ‘Garden for friends’ is a sprawling garden having marble elephants, fountains, manicured rose bushes and many trees all maintained in a manicured garden. No wonder it is a popular garden in Udaipur.

The yesteryear king, Maharana Sangram Singh built this garden as a gift for his wife and the queen’s 48 accompanists who came with her as dowry. The garden was built so that the queen and her friends could relax and retreat.

Visit the Ahar Cenotaphs

Ahar Cenotaphs is an offbeat place to visit in Udaipur.

Situated a little away from the city, cenotaphs are royal tombstones. With beautiful architecture and carvings on them, they attract a few tourists to visit them. Similar cenotaphs are also located at Indore and Bhuj.

Ride the Mansapurna Karni Mata Ropeway

Vintage Car Museum Udaipur

The car collection, opened to the public in early 2000, is housed in what was once the royal garage. There’s even an antique petrol pump there. I highly recommend choosing a hotel near any one of the lakes – Fatehsagar Lake, Udaipur or Pichola Lake, Udaipur. Dilwara Temple, Mount Abu

Built between the 11th and 13th centuries, the Dilwara Temple of Mount Abu is a Jain temple. Mount Abu tourism cannot be complete without visiting Dilwara temple also known as Delvada temple.

Dilwara temple is made in the Maru-Gurjara architecture from the Solanki era. The same Solankis who built the complex Modhera Sun Temple and Rani-ki-Vav in Gujarat.

The Jain Temples at Dilwara evoke a sense of awe with the exquisite sculpting in ceilings, domes, columns and walls. The temple is a finished canvas for many unnamed artists who recreated images from Indian myths and legends on stones. 

Carved in white marble, the temple is known for its extraordinary architecture. Dilwara temple features unique craftsmanship, with intricate carvings all over the temple complex. The sculptures that adorn the temples are of numerous gods, goddesses, yaksas, dancers, musicians, apsaras and nagins. Other designs include trees, flowers and geometrical designs. 

The most outstanding feature of Dilwara temple is the thousand-petalled Lotuses that decorate the domes in the Rangmandaps.

Dilwara Jain Temples are made up of five temples – Vimal Vasahi, Luna Vasahi, Pittalhar, Parshvanath, and Mahavir Swami, all of which have exemplary structures and give off unmatched spiritual vibes.

Boating in Nakki Lake, Mount Abu

One of the most favourite Mount Abu tourist places is Nakki Lake. 

According to a local legend, the lake was built by Gods to protect themselves from a common enemy called ‘Bashkali’. While another legend says that the local king had ordered that whoever dug a lake with his nails overnight, could marry his daughter. It was called ‘Nakh ki Jheel’ nakh meaning nails and jheel meaning lake.

But legends aside, Nakki Lake is India’s first man-made lake, at the height of 11,000 meters. 

There are many ways to spend time at Nakki Lake. While the most popular activity is boating in Nakki Lake, visitors can take a walk around the walking track around the lake periphery. There is a garden and sitting area with kid’s activity area. Visitors can also engage in water sports such as zorbing overlooking the sunset. There are small vendors selling souvenirs and other knick-knacks. And there is a food court too.

The sunset at Nakki Lake Mount Abu is spectacular and one must plan to visit here during sunset.

Nakki Lake boating fees:

INR 100 per person for 30 minutes pedal boat ride.

INR 150 per person for 30 minutes shikara boat ride.

Toad Rock

Located near Nakki Lake, Toad Rock is a popular viewpoint and Mount Abu sightseeing place. This naturally formed rock is shaped like a toad which attracts tourists for a photograph. Visitors have to climb approximately 250 steps, to enjoy panoramic views of Nakki Lake and the Aravalli range.

Guru Shikhar

A short 15 km drive from Mount Abu lies the highest peak of Aravalli Range – Guru Shikhar. Guru Shikar point is at the height of 1,722 meters above the sea-level. It is not only a tourist attraction in Mount Abu but is a religious site as well. 

The peak is dedicated to Lord Dattatreya. Datta in Sanskrit means given. Dattatreya, according to Hindu belief is the son given to the sage Atri and his wife Anasuya by the Trinity, Vishnu, Shiva, and Brahma. Another temple at Guru Shikhar is Dattatreya’s mother Ahilya. 

There is a huge bell with the inscription 1411 A.D on the peak which is a huge attraction. The sound from this bell can be heard from long distances.

From the car park area, the peak is approximately 600 steps away. The steps are short and easy to climb. The sides of the steps are lined with local shops selling souvenirs, jewellery, bags, and clothes. There are small eateries selling lemon juice, Maggi and wafer packets.

Achaleshwar Mahadev Temple, Mount Abu

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Achaleshwar Mahadev Temple is a popular attraction among pilgrims and tourists. Located on the foothills of Achaleshwar Fort, the temples have beautiful carvings. Achaleshwar Mahadev temple is said to have been built around a giant toe-print of Lord Shiva, making it one of the most revered religious sites in Mount Abu. 

There are smaller shrines in the temple complex dedicated to other gods and goddesses.

Achalgarh Fort, Rajasthan

Located 10 km away from Mount Abu, Achalgarh is a treasure trove in itself with many things to do and see. Visitors can easily spend one day in Achalgarh.

The fort is estimated to have been built in the 9th century by the Paramara dynasty and later renovated by Rana Kumbha in the 15th century. Bordered by massive walls that enclose a few beautiful temples inside, the Achalgarh Fort offers interesting glimpses of Mewar architecture.

Visitors can start by paying a visit to the Achaleshwar Mahadev Temple and the Jain temple on the foothills. A short ride away is the steps to Achalgarh. There are jeeps driven by locals who take you to the dedicated point from the labyrinth lanes. This is a 1 km ride and they charged INR 300 for pick up and drop for 7 of us.

The climb through the steps of Achalgarh fort takes visitors to the entrance of the Jain temple. White marble pillars and carved sculptures envelop the courtyard making one feel at peace. The shrine is a few more steps away from the courtyard. The main idol weighs several tons and is made of Panchaloha (5 metals). The temple is a “chaumukhi”, with an idol facing all four cardinal directions.

Chamunda Mata Temple and Gopichand ji Cave, Mount Abu

After climbing further visitors come across a gate welcoming them to Chamunda Mata temple. A few steps away is the Chamunda Mata temple and a small lake in front of it. According to a legend, this lake was filled by the tears of Saint Mirabai.

Further to the right, a pebbled road leads to Gopichand ji Cave a saint who did ‘tapasya’ (austerity) for 12 years. He and his nephew did tapasya for 12 years in a competitive spirit to please Goddess Kali. Pleased with the devotion, Goddess Kali presented herself from a rock. The impact was such that an idol in the shape of goddess was left behind. The rock formation is coloured and worshippers go here to get blessed by the goddess.

Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary

If wildlife is your calling then Mount Abu will not disappoint. With rich flora and fauna, this Mount Abu wildlife sanctuary is a heavenly place.

The sanctuary is spread across an area of 288 sq. km and is home to a variety of rare and exotic animals. Most frequently seen wildlife include the Indian leopard, sloth bear, pangolin, Indian fox, and wild boar, to name a few. There are also around 250 species of birds and a variety of trees and plants found here.

In order to experience nature in its raw form, there are many Mount Abu camping options. They take visitors on walking nature trails and adventure enthusiasts can stay in tents in the jungles. This adrenaline rush makes many travellers visit Mount Abu every year, especially during monsoon. Rains make Mount Abu lush green and it is a sight to behold.

Peace Park, Mount Abu

As the name suggests, Peace Park is a park that is surrounded by a beautiful environment and serenity. It is an ideal place for meditation and peaceful recreation. 

Established by the Brahma Kumari’s, it is an establishment that is surrounded by lush greenery and a garden maintained by their management. It has a playground, a rock garden with succulents, citruses, orchids, ornamental shrubs, roses, creepers, climbers, and other flora.

There are also stone caves and huts used for meditation.

Honeymoon Point, Mount Abu

The Honeymoon Point in Mount Abu is at an elevation of 4000 feet and offers an exquisite sunset against the backdrop of Nakki Lake. 

It is a popular tourist destination in Mount Abu. although the name is given to attract honeymooners, all tourists throng this point for wonderful views of the valley. for couples and nature lovers. 

Beware, as this area gets notorious for traffic jams and parking is a nightmare. On long weekends, one may get a parking space 1km away.

Universal Peace Hall, Mount Abu

An architectural marvel, Universal Peace Hall was constructed in 1983 and can accommodate 5000 people at the same time. The hall has no pillars which means there is a seamless interaction between the speakers and listeners. 

Universal Peace Hall is the main assembly hall in the Brahma Kumari Spiritual University. Another unique feature of this hall is the facility to translate speeches into 16 different languages simultaneously during events.

Visitors can learn Rajya Yoga meditation and participate in spirituality and meditation workshops, seminars, conferences and courses here.

Crocodile park Trevor’s Tank, Mount Abu

I have visited multiple times and my latest accommodation in Mount Abu was at Hummingbird Resorts. The resort is near Achalgarh fort, a little far from Mount Abu and the touristy Nakki lake. This is a breather because there are no traffic jams or parking problems here. The resort has a nicely maintained garden, swimming pool, kids’ play area and good food options. The resort is vila with 3 rooms and a common sitting and dining area. If you are travelling in a group, it is a great option.

If you are visiting Udaipur and have more than 3 days in Udaipur, Kumbhalgarh fort is a lovely place to explore. Kumbhalgarh kila is a perfect one day trip from Udaipur as well as a weekend trip.

Having been to Udaipur many times, we decided to explore the Kumbhalgarh Fort and Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary.

Kumbhalgarh Fort Facts

The list of Forts of Rajasthan is endless. Each fort in Rajasthan has a distinctive character and each one of them is worth visiting! Kumbhalgarh Fort wall length is 36 km and is the second-longest wall in the world spanning 36 km. I think that is a reason enough to visit Rajasthan.

The Mewar Fortress situated in the Aravalli Hills in the Rajsamand district is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fort is surrounded by Kumbhalgarh forest which is now protected as Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary. From the peak, one can see most of the wall and the hills of the Aravalli Range.

Built on a hilltop of 1,100 m (3,600 ft) above sea level, the Kumbhalgarh fort has perimeter walls that extend 36 km. The frontal walls are fifteen feet thick to protect the army from attack.

Kumbhalgarh has seven fortified gates called pols. The walls were so broad that 7 to 8 horses could go side by side.

There are over 360 Jain and Hindu temples within the Kumbhal fort premises.

The fort was never ever conquered in battle due to its thick walls and mountain terrain making it camouflaged. However, the Mughals did manage to capture it briefly when they poisoned the water supply of the fort.

Kumbhalgarh Fort History

The Kumbhalgarh Fort was built by the then ruling King, Rana Kumbha in the 15th Century. The interesting bit is that the king attempted to build the fort several times but it kept failing. A saint offered himself as a human sacrifice with a promise from the king, to build a temple where his head fell and the main fort where his body lay and a wall to be built along the entire stretch. The king obliged and the rest is history. 

Occupied until the late 19th century, the fort is now open to the public and is lit each evening.

We reached Kumbhalgarh Fort on a hot November afternoon. We decided to go up the fort and promised ourselves to check out the temples early morning of the next day.

We started walking towards the fort. After entering the main doorway and paying Rs. 15 as the entry fee, we started climbing up. The walk to the peak from the ticketing area is over 1 km. Each gate narrows down so that beyond a certain point horses and elephants can’t enter. There are watch towers that make for a good viewing gallery.

We walked on the well-laid path which was bordered by blooming flowers providing fantastic views of the windows and pillars. It took us one hour to climb to the peak including all the photo sessions we stopped for.

We finally reached the top of the fort called ‘Badal Mahal’ meaning ‘House of clouds’. From up here, the views were even more spectacular. 

There are no sign boards or interpretation signs showing what we were looking at there. The fort as such is in ruins. It is the birthplace of King Maharana Pratap. There is absolutely nothing inside the fort to be seen other than a horse stable, rainwater harvested well, a watch tower, Rana Pratap’s purported room, some empty rooms and an ancient temple inside and 2 smaller shrines (one for the head and one for the body of the saint whose penance supposedly helped build the fort).

The light and sound show did help put a perspective together but some information would have really helped.

We started our descent as it was getting dark and we wanted to catch the light and sound show.

The light and sound show at Kumbhalgarh explains the history of the fort. The duration of the show is 1 hour. The cost for the show is an additional INR 100 for adults and INR 50 for children.

The light and sound show starts at 7 pm and takes the visitors through the history of Mewar and its rulers. It showcases the bravery of Maharanas of Rajasthan and the loyalty of the servants.

It showcases how Rana Kumbha built the fort after many attempts and the birth of Maharana Pratap and his bid to save the fort from Mughal attacks. The light and sound show also showcases how Prince Udai was smuggled out of the palace when the fort was under threat.

Each part of the history is elaborated with good sound effects and lights and good voice-over artists which makes the visitors glued to their seats to know more.

The show definitely brings a sense of pride to the visitors. Post the show, the whole fort is illuminated for one hour and it’s absolutely spell-binding.

After a good dose of history and in total awe we left the show only to come back for more.

Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary

The next day on the way to the fort, we stopped to inquire about the wildlife sanctuary safaris and were informed that it is happening now. We jumped with excitement and decided to go for it.

Just like a safari is any wildlife sanctuary, we were allotted an open jeep, a driver and a guide. 

This 2-hour safari took in the forest of Kumbhalgarh. While leopard and sloth bear sightings have happened, we could only manage to see a sambar deer. For leopard sightings, Jawai is a better option.

How to Reach Kumbhalgarh

Udaipur is the closest airport and city. Kumbhalgarh to Udaipur is about 82km and is connected only through the road. Ideally, hire a car from Udaipur and do one day trip to see the fort.

Best time to visit Kumbhalgarh fort

Like most Indian destinations, it is ideal to visit Kumbhalgarh Fort in the winter months which is between November to February. But the monsoon months are fairly decent as well due to pleasant weather. The Aravalli ranges swell green colour due to the onset of monsoon so everything looks very refreshing. Avoid summers as it gets really hot, especially the climb to the peak.

Kumbhalgarh has ample options for luxurious and semi-luxurious stays. There are many properties that have been camouflaged with the fort wall giving it a look of being part of the fort complex. 

I stayed at The Aodhi, Kumbhalgarh which is a heritage property. The entire property is made up of a fort using local stones and aesthetically strikes the right chords with the visitors. There are many places to visit near Kumbhalgarh so it is a good idea to spend the night here. With good resorts availability and many things to do around Kumbhalgarh, these are some of the places that can be combined:

Haldighati

Haldighati is 63km away from Kumbhalgarh and is a perfect one day trip. It can be covered while going to Udaipur or while coming to Kumbhalgarh fort from Udaipur. Haldighati (translated as a turmeric-coloured pass) is a mountain pass where the Battle of Haldighati took place between the Mewar forces led by Maharana Pratap, and the Mughal forces.

Kumbhalgarh Travel Tips

• If interested in history the light and sound show in the evening is best.
• There are no signboards or interpretation centres that will guide you through the fort.
• The fort is open all days of the week.
• Wear sports shoes or flat footwear as you need to walk on the slope to reach the top of the fort.
• It will get chilly during winter, especially in the evening so wear warm clothes.

Sustainable tips for Kumbhalgarh Travel

• Kumbhalgarh is in the middle of a protected area under a sanctuary so respect it with no littering.
• Drive slow and don’t play music too loud as you may disturb the animals nearby. Remember the neighbouring area is a Wildlife Sanctuary.
• If you plan to visit the Wildlife Sanctuary, buy tickets and fix up vehicles only with registered forest vehicles. There are a lot of agents posing as ‘real forest guys’ outside the fort charging much more.
• Do not write or scratch the stones of the fort. It is a heritage site for many years so let us do our bit to preserve it.
• Do not pluck flowers from the flower bed of the fort pathway. Let us keep it beautiful the way it is.

I passed it when I visited the Anokhi Museum Jaipur, which is bang in fron,t but I could never have guessed there was a stepwell here! I guess most stepwells have a humble existence.

What is Stepwell or Baori?

A stepwell is a type of ancient water storage tank where water was accessed through a series of steps. They served as a source of drinking water, especially during deficient rainfall, which was quite often in the region.

Stepwells have different names around the country. In Delhi, they are called Baoli, in Rajasthan Kund, and in Gujarat, they are called Vav.

With around 2000 ancient stepwells in India, approximately 100 of these can be found in Rajasthan. Most of the stepwells in Rajasthan were built in medieval times around the 15th and 16th centuries.

History of Panna Meena ka Kund

Although there is no confirmed history on how this Panna Meena ka Kund got its name. However, there are two local legends that go this way: a eunuch named Panna Miah was instrumental in constructing this stepwell. Another theory is that the Meenas were the original There is yet another theory: it is built in remembrance of the Meenas, a local tribe residing in Amer before the Rajputs arrived.

About Panna Meena ka Kund Architecture

Unlike the Chand Baori of Abhaneri, which is massive in size and also has a rather interesting history, Panna Meena ka Kund is a baby stepwell. Panna Meena Ka Kund is also called Panna Mian Kund, Panna Meena Baori, Panna Meena Bawri and is one of the best-restored stepwells or Baori in Jaipur and is extremely accessible to all tourists visiting Amer. It is one of the must visit places in Jaipur.

Panna Meena ka Kund is an eight-storeyed stepwell that is 200 feet deep with 1800 symmetrical steps. It is believed to have been built during the 16th century. These staircases are geometrical in shape but organised in a unique crisscross way. Octagon-shaped pieces have been used in the core of the Kund and terrace on two floors. Its zigzag geometrical pattern makes the Panna Meena Kund of Jaipur extremely unique.

Unlike most stepwells in Rajasthan that have 4-sided steps to climb down to the water,  Panna Meena ka Kund has steps on only three sides. It is plain on the fourth side with a room-like structure overlooking the entire stepwell complex.
On each corner of the complex, there is an umbrella-like structure called Chhatris, where one can sit and relax just the way it happened in olden times.

How to reach Panna Meena Stepwell | Location

Panna Meena Ka Kund is located in Amer town, close to Ambikeshwar Mahadev Temple and opposite to the Anokhi Museum. It is an easy walk away from the Amer Fort if you are not too tired from walking across the fort. Follow Google Maps or ask the locals for directions to reach the stepwell.

Panna Meena Ka Kund is open all the time. However, there have been instances of suicides and eve-teasing incidents due to which the authorities have strict timings. It is now open from early morning to sunset.

Unfortunately, no. There is a security guard present in the complex at all times, keeping a close watch. I had seen pictures of many people on these steps before going, so I had assumed it was allowed. Panna Meena ka Kund is one of the extremely popular Instagram worthy places to visit in Jaipur.

However, I was not allowed to go in spite of many requests from the security guard. He cited the reason for ‘Safety’. When I showed him pictures of tourists on Google, he just brushed it off and said I needed permission to go down the steps. Then he gave me the example of a Bollywood unit that got prior permission for shooting at Panna Meena ka Kund, the previous night.

Movies like Dabangg 3 and Dhadak were shot here.

The rules are obviously different for locals. A resident told me that local swimming competitions take place where young boys dive into the water. This usually happens in the monsoon when the water level is high and the water is fresh. He also told me that the only chance of getting down the steps is to go early in the morning and hope there is no guard there. Weekdays and off-season are the best times to get the photos on the steps.

Ambikeshwar Temple 

Located diagonally opposite, this temple can be seen from the Kund. It is only a few meters away. As per a local legend, Amer town derives its name from Ambikeshwar Mandir, Jaipur.

Jagat Shiromani Temple

The temple has beautiful architecture and is within walking distance of the stepwell. The temple is also called the Meera Bai temple.

Amer Fort

There is really nothing much to say about it, as it is the most popular tourist attraction in Jaipur.

Anokhi Museum

A unique textile museum paying an ode to the hand-block printed fabric of Jaipur (Sanganer).
