Ahmedabad has made me fall in love with its awe-inspiring architecture in the old walled city as well as with the more contemporary and modern buildings in the western areas. While the tranquil Ashram of Gandhiji gives ultimate peace, I personally enjoy shopping in the colorful bazaars and eating the delicious street food which tantalizes my taste buds. If asked about the best places to visit in Ahmedabad, my answer would be the Ahmedabad Heritage Walk.

The city eats, lives, and breathes heritage through its old lanes.

So let’s dive into the list of what to see and what to do in Ahmedabad, with this perfect Ahmedabad travel guide.

THINGS TO DO IN AHMEDABAD OLD CITY

Ahmedabad is known for its unique blend of centuries-old architecture, contemporary culture, vibrant festivals, a hub of industries, and a food lover’s paradise.

Ahmedabad is a city where traditions and culture date back 600 years and many religions have been woven together. So it’s only fair to start exploring Ahmedabad to know why it is a Heritage City.

Ahmedabad Heritage Walk is also known as Mandir se Masjid tak as it starts at a temple and ends at a mosque. This walk is a two-kilometer walk held every day. There are a total of 20 sights that include, Hindu and Jain temples, a mosque, chowks and exquisitely carved bird feeders. The duration of the walk is approximately 2 hours and is a guided tour.

Whether visitors decide to go on a walk or not, some of the best places to visit in Ahmedabad old city are:

Pay respects at Shree Swaminarayan Temple, Kalupur

Shree Swaminarayan temple was built in 1822 and is a multi-colored, wood-carved Swaminarayan Temple in Ahmedabad. This is where the Ahmedabad Heritage Walk starts from.

It was the first temple of the Swaminarayan Hindu sect. It presents idols of Nara Narayana, who occupies the principal seat of the temple, and forms of Arjuna and Krishna at the central altar. The sculptures showcase the cultures and costumes of Maharashtra and Gujarat. The devotees can avail themselves of the live darshan of the temple here.

Swaminarayan Temple, Kalupur

Get lost in the Pols of Ahmedabad

A pol (પોળ) is a housing cluster just like the gated housing societies. Each pol is self-contained with its own community well, a chabutara (bird feeder), and a place of worship. The central chowk of each pol plays the role of a community center – doubling up as a playing space for the kids and a corner for the men, women, and elders to catch up daily chit-chat.

There are over 300 pols in the walled city of Ahmedabad.

Say a prayer at Jama Masjid Ahmedabad

The Jama Masjid is a mosque with a reservoir in the center. The massive proportions of the place reminded me Jama Masjid Delhi. Overlooking a towering overhead light, there are 15 domes and 260 elegant pillars.

Constructed by the founder of Ahmedabad, Ahmed Shah I in the early 14th century, it is a peaceful and quiet area with a huge expanse. People can be seen praying throughout the day.

The exterior of the mosque has elements from Islamic and Gujarat styles of architecture. The sculptures include floral motifs and geometrical patterns on walls and pillars.

Get awed by Dada Harir ni Vav

Out of the two ancient step-wells that are located around Ahmedabad, Dada Harir Stepwell (Bai Harir Vav) is often cast aside for the more famous one in Adalaj.

But, I would highly recommend that you don’t skip this historic stepwell as it is far bigger with equally as amazing architecture on its many levels. Not to mention, you will probably have the whole vav to yourself!

The Dada Harir Stepwell is a 15th-century water temple that has five levels and they are held up by intricately carved pillars that have perfect symmetry throughout the well.

At one end, there is a huge octagonal vav that is 190 feet deep. It can be accessed via a narrow spiral staircase inside the structure.

This stepwell has both Arabic and Sanskrit inscriptions as well as Jain and Hindi idols carved inside. There are also Persian carvings of flowers and elephants lining the walls too.

Also Read: Rani-ki Vav, Patan and Sevasi Vav, Vadodara

Visit Sidi Saiyyed Mosque

Another architectural marvel is the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque, which is a tribute to Ahmedabad. Sidi Saiyyed Jali is so popular that it has become an unofficial symbol of Ahmedabad and is often used as an Ahmedabad souvenir or for felicitating delegates in workshops. The mosque is located in the heart of the 600-year-old walled city of Ahmedabad, at a very busy intersection. The mosque is set up like a theatre without a fourth wall and has carvings depicting a tree with intertwining branches of filigree work hewn from solid stone.

Visit Bhadra Fort and Bhadrakali Temple

Bhadra Fort was built by Ahmed Shah, the founder of Ahmedabad city, in the 14th century.

The fort was given its name due to the Bhadrakali Temple that stands nearby.

The fort housed royal palaces and the beautiful Nagina Baugh and the royal Ahmed Shah’s Mosque on the west side and an open area known as Maidan-Shah on the east side. It had a fortified city wall with 14 towers, eight gates and two large openings covering an area of 43 acres.

Explore the carvings at Hutheesing Jain Temple

Ahmedabad has been a significant religious place for Jainism and houses several Jain pilgrimage centers. Hutheesing Jain Temple is one of the must-see places in Ahmedabad. An architectural gem of the city, the temple draws a huge crowd owing to its divinity and serene ambiance. Ornamented with stunning stone carvings, the temple is a masterpiece built in white marble.

Question the architecture at Jhulta Minar of Ahmedabad

Jhulta means to shake and Minar means a pillar. I remember visiting Ahmedabad as a kid when visitors were allowed to go inside the Minar and actually see them shaking. Now in a dilapidated state without any maintenance, they are closed for demonstrations, i.e. one cannot go inside. However, you can still wonder about the working of the monument from the outside. It is definitely one of the Ahmedabad heritage places from yesteryears.

These minars have fascinating architectural styles made of stone with intricate carvings. What makes them special is that if one of the pillars was shaken with a gentle force, the opposite pillar would sway. It is indeed difficult to comprehend the kind of science people used, centuries before to make such wonders work.

There are two well-known pairs of Jhulta Minar in Ahmedabad, one located opposite the Sarangpur Darwaja and the other near the Kalupur Railway Station Ahmedabad.

BEST THINGS TO DO IN AHMEDABAD CITY (NEW)

Feel at peace at Sabarmati Ashram Ahmedabad

Also known as the Gandhi Ashram, it is the highlight of the Ahmedabad sightseeing tour. Sabarmati Ashram is the must-visit place in Ahmedabad as it is popular as Mahatma Gandhi’s yesteryear residence. Sabarmati Ashram also referred to as Harijan Niwas is situated on the banks of the Sabarmati river.

Gandhi’s residence was turned into a museum and it is a great place to learn about his principles and his overall life of struggle and contribution to India’s freedom. The Ashram can be visited at any time of the day, and it has a positive vibe which will make the visitors relaxed. You cannot miss the Charkha (spinning wheel) used by him wherein he made khadi clothes, his handwritten letters, paintings, and library. There is also a 90 minutes guided tour in case you want to know everything in detail.

The structure is stunning because of the complete absence of arches. The Sarkhej Roza overlooks a beautiful lake and looks breathtaking after a monsoon rain. It is certainly Ahmedabad’s best places to visit.

What people don’t realize is that Bhuj is much more than a transit place and visitors should stop here for a couple of days. Bhuj is a surprise package in the real sense of the term.

Check out all these Bhuj visiting places.

History of Bhuj Kutch

Bhuj, a city in the district of Kutch, was an old walled city in the past. Bhuj came in limelight on the global map, due to the 2001 Gujarat Earthquake that tore down most of the city.

Thanks to the many humanitarian organizations and NGOs, Bhuj Kutch rose from the ashes. Kutch now hosts one of the longest festivals in India – The Rann Utsav in the White Desert. Bhuj acts as a gateway to the Rann Utsav and the Great Rann of Kutch.

In spite of being a city in the district of Kutch, Bhuj is referred to as Bhuj Kutch or Kutch Bhuj by travellers.

Bhuj is full of history, architecture, grandeur, colourful bazaars and delicious food. Visitors can spend hours in the intricate streets and alleys which have the historical glory standing strong. There are walls within walls, old palaces, temples, intricately carved step-wells and lakes making Bhuj a must-visit place before heading to Rann Utsav.

Places to visit in Bhuj

While Bhuj keeps adding tourist places in Bhuj every few years, the following list is based on the places I have been to in recent years. These are the best places to visit in Bhuj.

Prag Mahal, Bhuj and Aina Mahal, Bhuj

Two palaces ( or the remains of palaces) stand adjacent to each other – The Prag Mahal and Aina Mahal. One can see the impact of the devastating earthquake on the exterior structures of both these palaces.

Prag Mahal, Bhuj is also known as the Bhuj Palace. Prag Mahal is one of the best places to visit in Bhuj. The palace survived the impact, which was earlier built in a lavish Italian gothic style. The palace has a lavish Durbar hall, with large pillars, huge chandeliers and classic marble statues, all defining the opulence of the bygone era.

Other important parts of the palace include Corinthian pillars, carved doorways, broad window boxes and Jali work representing European flora and fauna. Do climb the stairs to reach the bell tower for an exhilarating view of the city and Bhujia Hills.

Kutch is also written as Kachchh. Bhuj has a city museum that houses some very rare idols and artefacts. It is one of the oldest museums in the state of Gujarat and has collections of coins and tribal art and craft which includes embroidery, mirror work, thread work and metalwork. It also has collections of inscriptions and information about the tribal community of Gujarat.

All the labels and information in the museum is bilingual – English and the regional language Gujarati for ease of understanding.

Come out of the Kutch museum to witness the glory of migratory birds in the Hamirsar lake which is within walking distance from each other. The lake is a manmade lake built and derives its name from the yesteryear ruler – Hamir Rao.

The lake was built in order to cater to the domestic needs of Bhuj city and is adorned with cenotaphs. Unfortunately, the cenotaphs haven’t survived the earthquake impacts but can still see some remains and the Greater Cormorants basking in the sun’s glory.

Hamirsar lake is a good place for a walk in the evening and you can find some local vendors selling snacks. Winter mornings can be really special as you can spot local as well as migratory birds like Greater flamingos, Pelicans, Black-winged stilt, etc. Hamirsar Lake is one of the best places to visit in Bhuj.

Chattardi Bhuj

The construction of cenotaphs or chhatris was done by the Royal families of erstwhile kingdoms in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Delhi and Indore, Madhya Pradesh. These umbrella-shaped dome structures were built in memory of a royal family member and do not contain the mortal remains.

Chattardi in Bhuj is a cenotaph’s complex made of red stone. It is one of the rarest monuments existing in India as all of the tombs here are made out of Red stones.

Each tomb is different in size, shape and design with intricately carved walls and roof. Floral designs are the most common patterns found on these tombstones. Apart from floral patterns, hexagons, octagons and stripe patterns can also be seen across the walls of the structure.

Although many movies have been shot here and Chattardi has shot to fame, visiting this place will transform you into a different world altogether. Unlike other tourists, I visited this place with a guide and got amazing information about each structure’s significance. This is definitely a place to visit in Bhuj.

Swaminarayan Temple, Bhuj

The divinity of the temple can be proved during the Gujarat Earthquake of 2001. The earthquake destroyed one side of the temple facing north which was built by Lord Shree Swaminarayan. Miraculously the divine idols remained as they were, without any damage whatsoever.

It was decided that the idols would be housed inside a new grand temple. A huge temple was constructed using traditional Vedic architectural methods, on the banks of Hamirsar Lake.

Since its first brick installation ceremony on 7 May 2003, it has taken 7 years for its completion. Based on a grand podium, the new temple faces East and is constructed mainly with pure high-quality marble. It has intricate wooden carvings coated with vibrant colours that characterize this temple.

Shopping in Bhuj

Going to Bhuj and not shopping is like committing a crime. Shopping in Bhuj and around for Kutch arts and crafts is a must and one of the best tourist places in Bhuj. Depending upon whether you are spending one day in Bhuj, two days in Bhuj or more, shopping can vary. There are many tourists who only tour the art and crafts scene in Kutch villages. There are 2 options for things to buy in Bhuj.

Shopping in Bhuj city

If you do not feel up to driving out of town to Bhujodi village, there is a street in the middle of the city on station road, where you can shop for artefacts, and textiles and even customize a nameplate for yourself in mirror and mud work. There is no particular name to the street but it is the one near Rajgulab shopping centre.

Shopping in Bhujodi | Famous Kutch Handicrafts

Bhujodi is a traditional crafts village which is situated about 12 km from Bhuj. The village is over 500 years old and is popular as the weaver village as the 1200 families residing here have looms in their house. Shopping in Bhujodi is probably one of the best places to visit in Bhuj Kutch!

Brightly coloured stoles, kurtas, shawls adorned on the walls of each house welcome everyone in Bhujodi. These are handwoven and hand embroidered and beautified with silk threads and mirror work in intricate designs. Other commonly seen textile products consist of bed sheets, the regional outfits called chaniya choli and dupatta.

Spend time around the villages in Kutch to explore the art and craft which is unique, vibrant and mind-blowing. Some of the options are:

Ajrakh Block Prints: In Ajrakh, Khavda and Dhamadka areas

Rogan art: In Nirona area

Bhuj Kutch famous food | Must try street food in Bhuj

While common Gujarati snacks that are found all over Gujarat are found here such Sev Khamni, Puri Shak, Dhokla, Khaman, etc. there are special dishes that have made a mark. Bhuj is a paradise for street food and has many options to choose from.

Dabeli

Dabeli is a popular street food that originated in Kutch. Hence it is also known as Kutchi or Kacchi Dabeli! Kutchi dabeli is a must-try food in Bhuj that has a sweet, hot and tangy masala and is served in Bun bread.

Thali

If you want to indulge in a vegetarian thali (assortment of dishes arranged as a platter for lunch or dinner) I would highly recommend Umiyaji Dining Hall or Ashapura dining hall. Most hotels in Bhuj, also have a restaurant so that is also a good option to wind up the day with.

Gulab Pak

This is a food souvenir to take back home from Bhuj Kutch. Combining the choicest rose petals and dry fruits Gulab Pak is a delicately flavourful, luxurious sweet. Khavda is the shop that specializes in this dessert.

I have lived in Vadodara for decades before living in Ahmedabad and yet I never knew about the places to visit in Vadodara. Over the past few years, my visit to Vadodara is limited to the weekend which is spent relaxing or relishing the street food in Vadodara. But during my recent visit, I decided to spend more time to explore the city which I call my hometown. Tambekar Wada is the first place I explored and was totally blown over by it which made me write a dedicated post for it.

I rode my motorbike to reach the Tambekar Wada, located in the Tambekar no Khancho, Raopura following the google instructions. I stopped exactly where it said ‘You have reached your destination. Your destination is on your left’, and it did not look the way I had looked up on google. The building looked like a government office so I went in to find out. I asked 3 different people about a building with wall paintings and nobody had a clue as to if I was asking them in, French! All of them kept saying that I am in Tambekar Wada but part of it is a ward office and part of it is a school. I checked and rechecked on google, and it said I am in Tambekar Wada.

I was flabbergasted and clueless about what my next move should be!

I had noticed a temple just before entering this government building and I hoped I would find someone who will guide me! The doors were closed (What has Covid-19 done to religious places!!) but luckily, I saw someone in a house and I asked him about Tambekar Wada paintings and he said well you are in Tambekar Wada only. This was it and I decided to give up!!

Then he added if you want to see the paintings, go around the main road and you will find what you are looking for!

I walked around and finally saw ‘Archeological Survey of India’ board, which meant I was finally in the right place.

What is Wada?

Wada is a courtyard style housing which was predominant in entire India during yesteryears. Wada was designed to suit the Indian weather as well as the joint family set-up which was part of the Indian tradition. Wada was designed and made using locally sourced materials and with a heavy influence of the local architecture.

A typical Wada consists of an all-encompassing massive structure that could accommodate a cluster of houses with a central courtyard, forming the focus of the household’s social activities. In Pune, the Wada was as big as a fort and housed an entire community.

Wada style housing is still found in many parts of Maharashtra and Gujarat (earlier Bombay Presidency). Though most of them are in shambles, the Wadas of Pune have been protected under ASI and are a must-visit, especially if you like culture, architecture and art.

About Tambekar Wada

As I walked inside the Tambekar Wada, I could not help but notice the typical Maratha style 3-storeyed building with garden space. It was formerly the residence of Diwan of Baroda State – Vithal Khanderao Tambekar, fondly known as Bhau Tambekar. The house is divided into two main parts with a courtyard in the middle. The front portion of the house has paintings on the walls and ceilings – to entertain and host guests. While the back potion was the residence and does not have any frescos.

The interior of the Wada is nothing but a riot of colours. Paintings, frescos and murals decorate the walls, doors, and ceiling. Each inch in the Wada is painted depicting characters and stories from Indian mythology – Mahabharata, discussions with the Britishers, festivals, culture, war scenes, fight sequence and so much more!

Tambekar Wada reflects the exquisite craftsmanship of its time and features some characteristic paintings which are quintessential to the bygone era.

Exploring the frescos of Tambekar Wada

As I entered the ground floor area, I was given a hand sanitizer and asked to write my name and contact number in a register. This area is turned into an ASI office so visitors are not allowed to see this space.

There are no entry fees to Tambekar Wada.

An attendant then asked me to follow him to the first floor where he would show me the frescos. Before I took the first step, he advised me to be careful as the steps are very steep and encouraged me to use the installed rope as a handrail.

As I reached the first floor, which was dimly lit with natural light on one side, I could see some frescos in good condition and somewhere the ceiling plaster has come off due to weathering. I was overwhelmed to see the details of painting on every inch of the second floor – including door frames. It took me time to settle and focus on one painting and try to make sense of what it wanted to portray.

Thankfully we crossed that hall into another room which had the masterpieces in relatively good condition.

Krishna on the throne

Krishna is seated on a throne with the mor mukut like those in Vrindavan. He is attended by his consort shown as a cowry bearer is shown like a Gujarati woman; he is shown surrounded by the assembly of gods, worshipped by maybe the local king. To the right of Krishna and between Shiva and Ganesha, Gauri is shown. Behind Ganesha are shown the Kala and Gora Bhiravs.

On the row below is probably the six-headed Karthikeya and behind Narada is probably Tumburu (without his horse face) behind has a ektara or tuntuna or tambura in hand.

The king resembles Raja Ramsingh of Kota. The god before the king has four hands with rose/ lotus in hands. Who is it, I know not, again no specific attributes presented. All gods except Trimurtis and sages are draped in cloaks and they all have only two hands. The face of the saints and the flora on top is for sure the signature of the artists of Nathadwara.

The image shows more Mughal influence on all the kings here than the so Marathi style.

This shows some of the exotic flowers like a chrysanthemum. The beautiful aphoristic pictures of flowers in crystal vases here were probably made for pure visual pleasure.

The slender stems in flocculent green, with a variety of blossoms, cornflowers, peonies, and anemones, in a multitude of colours are fascinating for the eyes.
There are murals which depict various scenes from Mahabharata including the anecdotes from the life of Krishna. There are ample contemporary scenes from the Anglo-Maratha wars of 19th CE. And there are many frescos depicting war scenes.

There is also a collage of paintings on the walls of Tambekar Wada. Some of the larger paintings are like scrolls telling a story in small scenes.

Initially, the attendant did not allow me to take photos. But I requested the lady in the office on the ground floor, and I was allowed to take photos with a mobile phone (professional camera not allowed). Also, flash photography not allowed. Selfies or photos with the frescos are a strict no-no.

Gir is popular for its Asiatic lion population, variety of birds and Kesar mangoes. But beyond the thrill of safari in Gir national park and biting into the juicy, sweet mangoes, there is another side to the “Land of Lions”. Life in the nearby villages is something a typical tourist does not experience. And so I chose not to select the luxurious resorts or Government forest rest house, in search of quiet village life through a homestay in Gir.

I could feel the chill of crisp air on my face as I got down at Veraval station. A driver arranged by my kind host patiently waited for me in the car. I was on my way to Bhojade village about 40 km from Veraval.

An hour into the journey, I reach Bhojade village and my host – Bhimsibhai, picks me up from the main village square to welcome me into his home also known as Gir Vanraj Farm. The car takes a sharp right turn and I enter a gate which seems like an unending mango orchard. Coconut trees peek through the mangoes and make their presence felt. The car stops and I am directed towards my room which is housed in a small one-floor complex. Hosting 10 rooms in total, I am pleasantly surprised by the basic yet required amenities in the room.

As I settle into the surroundings of chirping birds and mooing of the cows, I can feel myself detaching from the city life. Me and Bhimsibhai interact and he proudly tells me that he is a farmer but started the homestay business in 2015 to make ends meet. Tourism fetches him an extra income and he loves to host guests from all over the world. He kindly takes me around his humble property which has a vegetable farm, mango orchard and recreational activities like outdoor games and swimming pool. A stay here is really an opportunity to relax, unwind, and connect with rural life in a Gujarati village.

Food at Gir Vanraj Farm

Most meals are cooked by the family members of homestay in Gir. Meals are traditional and vegetarian Gujarati or Kathiyawadi dishes. The meals are prepared with fresh produce mostly plucked from their own farm. Even milk and milk products including ghee are made from desi Gir cows which is organic and homebred. Hence the taste of the food is extremely delicious. Honestly, I could go back to Gir just for this yummy food!

I saw a couple of spotted deer and Indian Bluebull very near to the homestay. I had the opportunity to discuss wildlife encounters with Bhimsibhai, his family as well as his friends around the village who told me umpteen stories of spotting lion, leopard and other carnivores in and around the homestay.
Being a small set up, most homestays have small sustainability initiatives. The Gir Vanraj farm reuses the water from the swimming pool for farming thus reducing the use of freshwater for agriculture. They have also set up a good solid waste management system wherein all the leftover waste is given to needy from the nearby village, roti/bhakri are fed to the cows, the raw waste from cutting of veggies and fruits is composted in the farm and they do not sell packaged food or PET bottle. The drinking water served is from a RO which is safe for consumption. Any plastic waste generated by tourists is stored and given for disposal once a week to Gram Panchayat worker.

Sustainable tips for Homestay in Gir

Bhojade is a small village and negligible solid waste management system. Avoid disposing of any plastic waste. Keep a small bag to collect all plastic waste and take it back to the city.

Encourage eating local food served at a homestay which is healthy yet delicious.

If you visit the jaggery making unit, buy a box. You are helping in generating livelihoods for the local community without the wholesaler making a dent in their and your pocket.

Be respectful. Thank the host after every meal or after a good night’s sleep. After all you are living in their house.

Travel and Tourism is one of the largest employing sectors. Earlier, travel and tourism field was related to being employed in five star luxury hotels, however the prospects have undergone a huge change and there are so many options to choose from. It is estimated that 46 million job opportunities will be created by 2025, in India alone. So today I am trying to answer the question of how sustainable is a career in travel and tourism.
