Out of all the things to do in Kerala, catching mist in Wayanad is a fun and relaxing way to enjoy this North Kerala gem. 

Whether you are on a Kerala road trip or a food journey across the state, or especially coming to Wayanad just to chill in a resort, Wayanad is on the list of all travellers.

Having been to Kerala 4 times over the years, North Kerala was unvisited, and I wanted to change that this time around. Thanks to Kerala Travel Mart 2024, I could finally tick off North Kerala and Wayanad off my list.

And while there are many things to do in Wayanad, relaxing in an amazing property is also a worthy trip. And that is exactly what I did at Great Trails Wayanad by GRT Hotels. 

ABOUT GREAT TRAILS WAYANAD BY GRT HOTELS

GRT Hotels & Resorts is a hospitality chain in South India, part of the larger GRT group. While they have many hotels and resorts in many cities, they have amazing properties in most tourist destinations in South India. While their hospitality is their signature, they are actively involved in sustainability initiatives, promoting practices like no plastic.

Wayanad property had opened only a few months back, and thanks to their partnership with KTM 2024, bloggers were invited to review it. So here’s my honest review about spending 1 day and 1 night at this beautiful property in Wayanad.

GREAT TRAILS WAYANAD BY GRT HOTELS REVIEW

From the winding main road, our driver took a left turn uphill. The sides were surrounded by tall trees as mist clung to them. A few meters ahead, the bus came to a halt.

As we got down from the bus, which was a rather long journey, happy and warm smiles welcomed us to the property.

A traditional welcome with kumkum tilak and a Great Trails-themed hand band made us feel right at home. A cold towel and brisk check-in later, we settled in the common area where we were served a blue pea tea and Unniyappam (sweet rice flour and banana dumplings). 

As we let the view from the property sink in, the property’s general manager, Ms Anu Shinoj, greeted us and invited us for some traditional chai and pakoras. Over the chai, she briefed us about the property and invited us for a tour.

Rooms at Great Trails Wayanad by GRT

The hotel boasts 16 Estate Villas with Balcony, 16 Estate Villas with Verandah and 10 Estate Bungalows. All the villas have colonial-style sit-outs and sloping wooden ceilings, offering stunning views of lush coffee plantations and sweeping valleys.

Each villa is spacious and furnished with extra-large beds, a sofa and a working table. All the bedrooms and bathrooms are fully equipped with contemporary comforts, creating a richly layered, luxurious atmosphere that feels like a sophisticated retreat.

I stayed at the Villa with a Balcony and there were fresh fruits with cutlery and jars with cookies and dry fruits.  The room featured a plush king-sized bed, a smart TV, and a coffee machine—everything needed for a comfortable stay. 

Whether it was sinking into the inviting bathtub after a day exploring Wayanad or enjoying a restful nap on the incredibly soft bed, Great Trails Wayanad by GRT clearly understands how to turn a stay into something special.

Augusta Heights, the restaurant at the hotel, serves up all sorts of Indian and International cuisine for all meals! There are enough vegetarian, non-vegetarian and vegan options for all guests. In case of any dietary requests, meals can be customised on request.

HOW TO REACH GREAT TRAILS WAYANAD

The hotel is located approximately 110 km from Kozhikode, which is the closest city with a railway station and an airport. From there, one must hire a private car to reach Wayanad. Great Trails Wayanad can arrange a pick-up from Kozhikode (110 km) or Kannur (104 km).

FINAL THOUGHTS ABOUT GREAT TRAILS WAYANAD BY GRT HOTELS

This was a short trip to Wayanad, and it was made extremely memorable and beautiful by the property.

My stay was truly relaxing and unforgettable, with every detail thoughtfully curated. The warm, welcoming staff were always happy to engage in a friendly conversation, and the cosy, stylish ambience made me feel instantly at home — a perfect example of exceptional hospitality.

The property strikes the perfect balance between comfort and sophistication, with delicious food that reflects the best of local and global cuisine. Even though my visit was short, the experience left a lasting impression. 

Based on my stay, I’d recommend Great Tails Wayanad as one of the top choices for luxury resorts in Wayanad. I would love to visit again for a longer duration.

‘Welcome to the Queen of Arabian Sea, a melting pot of all cultures’ said Satish, my guide, who picked us up from our hotel while heading to the Fort Kochi area. He informed us how Kochi is surrounded by backwaters and has many bridges to cross to small islands. After a brief background about Kochi city, he told us the history of Fort Kochi and how it has embraced many religions and cultures throughout the centuries.

I was on my third trip to Kochi, but I never explored the Kochi city or the Fort Kochi area, as I used it only as a transit point for my road trip in Kerala. But I was excited to explore it this time.

ABOUT FORT KOCHI

Fort Kochi is India’s historic port town with roots in the 14th century and influenced by a flow of European, Egyptian, Arab and Chinese merchants. Kochi was part of the silk and spice route for these traders. 

Kochi is a mix of small islands, and Fort Kochi and Mattancherry are the historic colonial areas within the city limits. Fort Kochi is primarily home to the Christians influenced by the European settlers. While Mattancherry is the vibrant trade centre and home to the Jews, Muslims and Hindus.

Due to the colonial influence, Fort Kochi has many heritage buildings that are over 500 years old. Not only buildings, but many historical records, antiquities and even the mortal remains of important traders still find a place in Fort Kochi. Most of these are now part of the tourist circuit in Fort Kochi.

HISTORY OF FORT KOCHI

Fort Kochi was a fishing village in pre-colonial Kerala. The Portuguese arrived in 1498 during the Age of Discovery, and the Cochin king allowed the Portuguese to settle in the Fort Kochi area for 160 years. 

The ‘Fort’ in Fort Kochi comes from Fort Emmanuel, which was constructed to protect their commercial interests. However, the Dutch later destroyed it. The Dutch ruled Fort Kochi for 112 years.

It was later captured by the British, who ruled the place for 152 years.

With such a diverse history of colonisation, Fort Kochi is now a treasure trove for tourists. 

BEST TIME TO VISIT FORT KOCHI

Kochi remains hot and humid all year round, but winters (November to February) are by far the best time to visit Kochi, as the weather is very pleasant. Summer in Cochin can get extremely hot and humid, and temperatures begin to rise in March. I went in the first week of May, and the outdoors were uncomfortable.

If you want to see the Onam celebrations in Kochi, September is the time when the festival happens. The Snake boat race also takes place at the same time

HOW TO GET TO FORT KOCHI FROM KOCHI AIRPORT

Fort Kochi to Cochin International Airport is 30 km. It roughly takes 1.5 hours because of heavy traffic. Government bus service is available at a cheaper cost (INR 90) while app-based taxi and pre-paid taxi services are also available from the airport. Taxis charge anything between INR 1200 to INR 1800 one way from the airport.

Getting around Fort Kochi and Mattancherry

The best way to get around Fort Kochi and Mattancherry is by walking or by bike. Hire a local guide who can take you around Fort Kochi, exploring the quaint neighbourhoods and heritage mansions.

FORT KOCHI WALKING TOURS | FORT KOCHI HERITAGE WALK

The best way to explore any area, especially its heritage through a heritage walk. Heritage walks are synonymous with many cities in India, and they are the best way to know a place in depth.

One of the best ways to explore Fort Kochi is by the Fort Kochi walking tour or bike tour. These are guided tours held by local guides or organisations and take tourists through the important yet offbeat places of Fort Kochi. The duration of the walking tour is 2-3 hours.

Fort Kochi Heritage walks with a unique itinerary:

Heritage walk

• Learn about the European settlement in Kerala by walking through street names such as Burger Street, Loafers Corner, Princess Street and Lilly Street.
• Walking through old avenue trees that are more than 500 years old. One of them is assumed to be the world’s biggest Christmas tree.
• Photograph the colonial houses, each having a unique history. Most of these are converted into bungalows, heritage hotels, elite hotels, boutique hotels, and leftover English clubs.
• Explore the monuments of St. Francis Church and Santa Cruz basilica church.
• Finish the walk at the Chinese fishing nets and the beach with some souvenir shopping.

Urban Spice Trail Walk 

• Know about the rich heritage and cultural colonies, exploring the spices that are grown in each house.
• Pay a visit to the world’s biggest Christmas tree, called the Rain Tree. 
• Visiting the Dhobi Khana, a community introduced by the Dutch and British, who are involved in laundry services.
• Pay respects to the 34 multilingual Hindu orthodox religious communities who live in harmony. 
• Visiting a flour mill to see how it works. 
• Walk to the biggest Kerala Tirumala temple of Asia’s biggest working bell.

Since we had about 4 hours in hand, we combined the best of these 2 itineraries and explored all that we could in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry.

BEST THINGS TO DO IN FORT KOCHI

We parked somewhere near the Dutch cemetery and started our walk through the shaded pathways of the Dutch colony. The following sums up my experience and all the things to do in Fort Kochi in one day.

Walk along the Dutch Colony road

Get friendly with the peaceful and clean roads with cobbled pavements, antique-looking street lights and heritage mansions. Just soak in the architecture of how these colonial mansions have now turned into boutique shops, Airbnb and even government offices.

Pay homage to the Dutch Cemetery

The tombstones here are the most authentic record of the hundreds of Dutch people who left their homeland in a mission to expand their colonial empires and who changed the course of the history of the land they conquered. The cemetery was consecrated in 1724 and is now managed by the Church of South India.

The gate to the Cemetery is generally closed, but visitors can peek in through the gate and notice the Portuguese inscriptions on the tombstones.

Visit the Vasco House, Fort Kochi

Believed to have been the residence of Vasco da Gama, Vasco House is one of the oldest Portuguese residences in Fort Kochi. It is now a private residence and offers a heritage home stay facility. 

Visit the St. Francis Church, Cochin

Built in 1503 by the Portuguese, this is believed to be India’s oldest European church. The church was initially built of wood and was a rather humble-looking church following Roman Catholic preachings.

It was captured by the Dutch and then by the British. It was later reconstructed in stone. 

The church has always been important, as the explorer Vasco da Gama was buried here in 1524. His mortal remains were later moved to Lisbon, Portugal. But his tomb was taken inside the church during renovation. This visit to St. Francis Church is one of the most historical things to do in Fort Kochi.

This humble church is one of the best tourist attractions in Kochi. It is still an active church wherein over 250 families take part in the Sunday mass. 

One of the most striking features of the church is the manual fan that is hung from rods on either side of the room. In the olden times, without electricity, people stood on the side of the rod’s end and pulled ropes to make the fabric swing and generate a breeze. One of the specialities of these fabric swings was that they used to be stuffed with herbal roots. The fabric was then sprinkled with water. On swinging, this fabric, laden with herbs and water, is used to provide cool relief during hot and humid months. 

The church has Victorian tiles in the centre of the church from the British era. The church still has instruments (mouth organ, piano, wooden pulpit, reading desk) from the bygone era and the same are being used and played during the Sunday mass. 

St. Francis Church Timings: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm (Monday–Friday), 9:00 am – 1:00 pm on Saturday, and 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm on Sundays.

Visit Bastion Bungalow

Head to the 17th-century Indo-European architecture mansion called Bastian Bungalow. It was used as a residential building during the British period. At present, it is used as the residence of the Sub-Collector of Kochi. The Bungalow on top of the Bastion is in European style with large rooms and high roof ceilings.

It is a protected monument and a heritage museum with a large collection of artefacts.

Bastion Bungalow Timings: Open all days from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm (Lunch break 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm).

Explore Vasco Da Gama Square

Head to the square, which is always active with many things to do in Fort Kochi. The steam boiler exhibit is hard to miss as soon as one enters. Steam Boilers from a dredger are installed near the walkway at Fort Kochi beach. 

The square is also popular for souvenir shopping in Fort Kochi, with street vendors selling street food, souvenirs and ice creams. 

Dip feet at Fort Kochi beach

Overlooking the Vasco da Gama Square in Kochi Beach. A walkway leads to a promenade, which is a good spot for photography.

Kochi overlooks the Chinese Fishing Nets and the ships that come and go. The beach also overlooks a factory, which makes the beach not such a great place to hang out. The beach is also dirty, which makes you think twice before dipping your feet in the water.

Chinese Fishing Nets, Fort Kochi

Locally known as ‘Cheenavala‘ and popularly known as Chinese Fishing Nets, they were introduced in the 14th Century by a Chinese explorer in Kochi. This method is said to be one of the oldest and most traditional fishing methods in the world. Visiting the Chinese Fishing nets is one of the Kochi Bucketlist places and most popular things to do in Fort Kochi.

Earlier, the nets used to be smaller, where one fisherman could manage the operation. However, now the entire Chinese fishing net assembly weighs over 250 kg and requires 4-5 men on deck for work. Fishing is usually done in the morning and early evening.

The structure is made of teak wood and bamboo poles, which are 10m high, fixed on the beach and has a cantilever with an attached net that is spread over an area of about 20 meters. Stones as counterweights are tied to ropes of different lengths that facilitate the working of the nets. 

The net is lowered into the water for a short time and then raised delicately by pulling on the ropes. The fish catch is collected by a sail net, segregated and stored.  The caught fish is sold in nearby markets by auction. Unwanted fish that do not have any selling value are returned to the sea. 

Only 8 Chinese Fishing Nets remain here in Fort Kochi and are part of the city’s Heritage. 

Watching this procedure from a distance is free, but in case you want to walk on the planks and see the process up close, the fishermen charge money. Worth the Instagram shot? Absolutely!

Kerala Kathakali Centre

A trip to the Kerala Kathakali centre is highly recommended while in Fort Kochi. The centre showcases traditional dance – Kathakali and martial arts – Kalaripayattu every day. 

Kalaripayattu is one of the oldest martial art forms in the world that originated in Kerala in the 3rd century. Considered among the oldest and most scientific martial arts in the world, the word ‘Kalari’ literally means ‘battlefield’ and ‘payattu’ means ‘training of martial arts. Kalaripayattu uses weapons such as swords and daggers, sticks, spears, maces, axes, arrows, discuses, catapults, boomerangs and others.

Kathakali is a form of classical Indian dance. It is unique as it is distinguished by the elaborately colourful make-up, costumes and facemasks that the traditionally male actor-dancers wear. The dance form is associated with storytelling through dance.

Tickets can be bought on the Centre’s premises ahead of the performance. Ticket price: INR 300 per person, and the duration is one hour.

Visit Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, Fort Kochi

Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Fort Kochi. Built in 1558 by the Portuguese, it was later destroyed by the British in the 19th century. On the same ground, a bishop rebuilt the cathedral, and it was proclaimed a Basilica in the early 20th century.

The stained glass in the interior, the Gothic architecture and the murals give a European vibe. It surely reminded me of St. Mary’s Basilica in Krakow, Poland.

Santa Cruz Cathedral timings: (Monday to Saturday) 9:00 am – 1:00 pm and 2:30 pm – 5:30 pm,  Sunday: 10:30 am – 1:00 pm. It is closed on the first Friday of every month.

Praise the Fort Kochi Street Art

With many art galleries to boast of in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry, visitors can get a flavour of art on the streets too. Everywhere around Vasco da Gama Square and Mattancherry, visitors cannot miss the wall art on the walls. Burger Street is also a lane full of colourful corners and walls. The street art is done by local and international artists. Portraits, murals, and graffiti in different shapes, sizes and colours adorn the walls.

This street art is done every year during the Muziris Biennale – A contemporary art event where art sessions, art exhibitions, talks, workshops, educational performances, film screenings, etc, are held. Happening worldwide, Kochi is also a host of this festival.

Because of the pandemic, Muziris Biennale was not held for 2 years, which has made the murals fade away in most areas. Kochi-Muziris Biennale is set to open on December 12, 2022, and will run for four months, till April 10, 2023.

Must-visit art galleries in Fort Kochi are the Durbar Hall Art Gallery, David Hall and OED Art Gallery.

Getting Ayurvedic Treatments in Fort Kochi

Kerala is home to the ancient tradition of Ayurveda. While Thekkady is a more popular place for getting these treatments, Fort Kochi also offers Ayurvedic massages for tourists who are not travelling elsewhere.

Ayurville is one of the most recommended places in Fort Kochi for getting Ayurvedic treatment. It offers long-duration retreats with stay and food for holistic healing. The treatment solutions are for people suffering from chronic ailments.

Cafe Hopping at Fort Kochi

There is a strong coffee and art culture in Fort Kochi, and if you are visiting here, then cafe hopping in Fort Kochi is one of the best things to do in Fort Kochi. There are many coffee shops and cafes dotted around Fort Kochi, and it can truly be challenging to choose one to visit during a Kochi day trip.

Kashi Art Café

Kashi Art Café is the most popular café in Fort Kochi and was recommended by at least 4 people to visit.

I visited it in the morning around 10:30 am, and it was already full with locals and tourists grabbing some breakfast overlooking some unique installations. The cafe has a relaxing ambience and is full of green vibes. There are shrubs and creepers everywhere, as well as some contemporary artwork displayed at the entrance.

I tried the ginger lemon soda as I was full, not looking for food, and it was decent. The food looked appetising and I promised myself to come back here during a more relaxed time.

Brunton Boatyard 

The colonial-style building right by the harbour is hard to miss. With splendid views of the waterways and this cafe is the perfect place to enjoy a sundowner.

Fort House Hotel 

Fort House Hotel serves authentic Keralan cuisine at its waterfront restaurant. This family-run hotel provides panoramic views from the table. Some of the must-try dishes here are Ginger-garlic prawns with appams and fish with green mango curry.  

The Jetty Restaurant at the Forte Kochi Hotel 

Located in the Heritage property on Princess Street, Forte Kochi Hotel is a beautiful place to stay, visit and dine. Jetty Restaurant is a poolside restaurant that serves delicious vegetarian and non-vegetarian varieties of Indian and International cuisines. 

Ginger House & Hotel 

A perfect lunch spot is Ginger House after all the walking and shopping for antique gift articles in Jew Town. This is a waterfront restaurant that is extremely green, vibrant and very different from what you may see.

Built in a typical colonial style with ornate woodwork and glass-paned windows, it is a must-visit place in Kochi.

It is an open-air restaurant overlooking the Kochi waterways, has a huge garden and is decorated with antique art and crafts all across.

BEST THINGS TO DO NEAR FORT KOCHI – MATTANCHERRY AND JEW TOWN

While Fort Kochi always hog the limelight, its neighbouring areas are nothing but a treasure trove and a must-visit in Kochi. A short ride away from Fort Kochi is Mattancherry and Jew Town, both tourist attractions offering unique places to see in Kochi.

Take a walk on the Palace Road

On the way to Mattancherry Palace, stop near the bustling streets to interact with the locals or simply observe them going about their lives. One can still find several traders selling spices as well as various religious places here: Temples, churches and mosques.

On the walk, we saw many fruit vendors and grocery stores selling unique items that are very particular to Kerala. Puja items and flower garlands for hair were also on display at many places.

We also visited a spice flour factory and a house making rice papads.

Pay respect at Cochin Thirumala Devaswom

Chochin Thirumala Devaswom is a temple with Sri Venkateswara as the main presiding deity.

The temple is a must-visit for its architecture. The double-storied northern tower or Gopuram is done in Pagoda style, which is influenced by the Indo-Tibetan architecture. It has a copper-plated roof and wooden carvings depicting scenes from holy relics.

Another important feature of the temple is its bronze bell. Every Hindu temple is known to have a bell or sometimes even multiple bells. However, Cochin Thirumala Devaswom has the largest bell in Asia in front of the main hall of the temple. The southern end before the main hall is richly decorated with chandeliers, domes and wooden sculptures. The exquisite carvings on the inner ceilings depict scenes from Ramayana, Mahabharata and Bhagwat.

Note: Only Hindu worshippers are allowed inside the temple. Worshippers have to strictly adhere to the traditional dress while entering the temple – women have to wear a saree, and men in a dhoti.

Visit the Mattancherry Palace Museum

If you think you are visiting a Palace like the ones in Udaipur or Jaipur, then you will be disappointed.

Mattancherry Palace Museum is a humble-looking 2-storey plan building overlooking a pond lined by coconut trees. 

Mattancherry Palace Museum is one of the oldest buildings in the Portuguese architectural style. Built in the 16th century, it was gifted to Bira Kerala Varma as an apology for plundering a temple nearby. It was accepted by the king and served as a set of the Royal House and hence was called a palace.

The palace underwent a major renovation in the later part of the 16th century at the hands of the Dutch and hence is also known as the ‘Dutch Palace’.

The palace is a perfect blend of Indo-European architecture. The Palace museum consists of a coronation hall, bed chambers, ladies chamber, royal dining hall and other rooms. The highlight of the palace lies in its wooden ceilings, murals and paintings covering over 300 square meters of area. The murals depict scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharat, and legends connected to Indian gods like Vishnu, Krishna and Durga.

The museum also exhibits oil portraits of the Kings of Cochin, their palanquins, dresses, weapons, coins and weapons.

Shop for Vintage collectables

After coming out of the Mattancherry Palace Museum, our guide made us take a shortcut, and we reached the backyard of scraps.

On going further, these scraps took shape in the form of antiques. This is when we realised we were in the antique market in Jew Town.

Jew Town in Kochi is the biggest antique market in India. Each shop is divided into sections and sub-sections, and honestly, it is like a maze where you keep moving without finding an exit. It is very easy to get lost in the antique market of Jew Town, so best to move around with a guide.

The antique shops here have a rich collection of antiques, crafts and spices in heritage buildings. Shops that look and feel as old as time are filled to the brim with antiques that are beautifully cared for and displayed. Some of the most pristine and historically relevant artefacts can be found here. They are like fractions of history, waiting for the right person to come and finally claim them. 

Shops towering over 2 storeys high with a basement are nothing short of a treasure waiting to be explored.

Visit the World’s longest canoe boat

Canoe boats are special for Kerala as they participate in Vallam kali, the traditional boat race in Kerala that is held every year during the season of the harvest festival, Onam. This sporting event – Vallam Kali, also known as Kerala Snake Boat Race, is a huge attraction in Kerala, and sporting enthusiasts visit the race from near and far. Each canoe boat is about 100 feet long and has a seating capacity of 150 men. Each boat is meticulously crafted by skilled craftsmen using local teak wood.

A 107-year-old wooden canoe boat is on display in one of the most humble-looking shops in the labyrinth lanes of Jew Town. It is no less than an art, and one can praise the fine craftsmanship of making this snake boat, which was once a pride of the backwaters.

It is displayed at a shop 2 doors away from the entrance of Ginger House and Hotel.

Visit the world’s largest cooking vessel, ‘Varpu’

Another gem often missed by tourists in Jew Town is the display of the world’s largest ‘Varpu’. Varpu or Uruli can be translated as a cooking vessel. This huge cooking vessel is made of bronze, has a 12-foot diameter and weighs 3184 kilograms. Made in 2004 by the lost wax method by the craftsman in Munnar, it took 13 months for 30 craftsmen and 160 artisans to make it.

The vessel was crafted in a 14-foot trench, and the mould was fired for 30 hours continuously.

It is displayed at a store called ‘Crafters’.

Try Aromatherapy in Jew Town

Incense sticks, perfumes and attars all made from endemic flowers are found in shops around Jew Town.  Take a seat as the experts demonstrate various aromas and fragrances by placing a small drop of oil on your hand. Rub it and try to guess which flower is responsible for it. A small apparatus displayed at the shop gives the idea of how oils are removed from flowers

The oils removed from the flowers are used as base fragrances in many designer perfumes and body mists.

Walk the quaint streets of Jew Town

Jew town, as the name suggests, was a neighbourhood where Jews lived. Only 2 families live here now. But the colourful streets and vibrant shops are a must-visit place in Kochi.

Jew Town is a narrow shopping street that leads up to the Jewish synagogue, Kochi. There are shops and art galleries on both sides of the street selling antiques, relics, Kerala souvenirs, handicrafts and clothes. It is a walking street with no motor activity allowed and is painted as though a street straight from the European markets.

Spice shopping on Bazaar Road in Mattancherry

Coming to Kerala and not shopping for spices is a crime! Kerala is known for its spices that are grown all over the state. Green cardamom, cloves, pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg are some of the must-buy spices in Kerala. They are known for good quality and are adulteration-free.

Explore the Paradesi Synagogue, Kochi

Walk to the end of Jew Street to reach Pardesi Synagogue. Pardesi means foreign, and locals called the Jews “paradesis” or foreigners in the local language. That is how the Jewish Synagogue got its name, Pardesi Synagogue. 

This 16th-century synagogue was constructed after the Cochin Jews were them land. Paradesi Synagogue is the oldest and most active one in Kochi.

A blossomed pink Bougainvillaea near the entrance is quite a spectacle, and the guard at the entrance requests visitors to put their phone in switch-off mode or hide it away in their bag. Photography is not allowed in the synagogue.

Hand-painted porcelain tiles from China, Belgian chandeliers, and the brass-railed pulpit demonstrate the charm of the bygone era. Spend some time in the sitting area just soaking in the interiors. 

Pardesi synagogue timings: Sunday to Thursday – 10:00 am – 6:00 pm, and Friday 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. Pardesi Synagogue is closed on Saturday.

Explore the Aluva Spice Market

While there are spice shops across Fort Kochi, they are a bit on the pricier side because of the tourist area. The spice market in Aluva is a wholesale market which supplies spices to these shops in Fort Kochi, Kerala and the entire nation. Hence, the prices here are lower and the quality is fabulous. The only downside is that one must purchase a minimum quantity of 250 g or 500 g, depending on the spice.

Ride the Kochi Water Metro

Kochi Water Metro is the first-ever water metro in India, and it only makes sense to ride it if you are in Kochi. The Kochi Water Metro is an eco-friendly transport initiative that links different parts of the city via an extensive network of waterways. Designed to ease traffic congestion and enhance urban connectivity, the project champions sustainable mobility for a greener future.

 I took the metro from High Court to Fort Kochi and paid INR 40 for this 15-minute scenic ride.

Visit the Kerala Folklore Museum

The Kerala Folklore Museum is a privately run, three‑storied wooden marvel which has an amazing collection of artefacts from Kerala.  Inside, over 4,000 to 6,000 artefacts, including masks, ancient stone‑age tools, sculptures in wood, bronze, and stone, ritual costumes, manuscripts, musical instruments, and tribal art, paint a vivid picture of Kerala’s folklore and cultural traditions 

Each floor tells a different story: the ground level features tribal art, masks, and ritual objects; the first floor, Kalithattu, displays elaborate dance costumes for Theyyam, Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, and Ottanthullal; while the second floor, Kanjadalam, boasts dramatic murals and a sculpted wooden ceiling.

Dutch Bungalow, Fort Kochi

If you are looking for something less expensive, try the Dutch Bungalow. Built in 1668 by the Dutch, the mansion is more than 350 years old. The rooms have lofty ceilings, a separate living area, huge bathrooms, and a beautiful, rustic feel about them. I stayed here when visiting Fort Kochi and had an absolutely amazing time.

DAY TRIPS FROM FORT KOCHI

While Fort Kochi has a lot to do and explore, many day trips from Fort Kochi are worth exploring. My favourite 3 places to visit for day trips from Fort Kochi are:

Cherai and Chendamangalam

Cherai is nestled at the northern end of Vypin Island and is blessed with calm and shallow waters, making it a favourite spot for swimming and bathing. It has a unique ecosystem, having backwaters from the Arabian Sea on one side and the Periyar River water on the other.

Apart from the beach, there are many water sports and adventure activities to choose from. There are many cultural and heritage sites in Cherai, which make it an interesting place to visit.

Among the places to visit near Cherai Beach, Chendamangalam Handlooms is also a cluster worth exploring. The Chendamangalam Heritage focuses on rural development and the sustainability of the handloom industry. A guided tour here takes the visitors through the history, the process, and the ecological and economic impact of Handlooms.

Alleppey

One of the most popular activities in Kerala is the houseboat experience in the backwaters of Kerala. Houseboats are available in Alleppey, Kumarakom and Kovalam. But the one on Alleppey has a different charm altogether.

Alleppey is around 50 km from Fort Kochi and takes you roughly 2 hours to get there by road. It is the ideal place to experience the houseboats of the backwaters.

Fort Kochi is special, and I regret not coming here on all my previous visits to Kerala. I also wish I had more time to explore other Fort Kochi walking tours and try the umpteen cafes here. I thoroughly had a lovely time overlooking the Fort Kochi streets lined with blue and yellow buildings, terracotta roofs and cobbled pavements reflecting the colonial era, and the modern art vibes. All these make Fort Kochi one of the most popular holiday destinations in India.

WHEN TO VISIT KERALA

Kerala can be best enjoyed in winter that is between November to February because of perfect weather conditions and less humidity. Summers are good too but the humidity is unbearable combined with heat. Monsoons are not a good time as rain is pretty harsh in the state.

GETTING AROUND KERALA

Depending on how you get into Kerala, you’re likely to find yourself in one of three cities on arrival – Kochi, Kozhikode or Thiruvanthapuram (Trivandrum). 

The entire state is connected via train and has a good frequency. However one can visit the hotpots by land travel. Buses and private cars are the best way to get around Kerala.

On the first day of Trivandrum trip, it is best to start with exploring the Trivandrum city. Here are some of the suggestions.

Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple

Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple is a historic Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, renowned for its Dravidian architecture. This temple. Located at the heart of Trivandrum is one of the most revered “Divya Desam” or holy resting places of Lord Vishnu. The deity in the Srikovil, or inner sanctum, depicts Lord Vishnu in the “Anantha Shayanam’ posture, in which he lies on the body of Adi Shesha, the five-headed serpent. 

To visit Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple, visitors are required to follow a strict dress code. Men should wear a dhoti and no shirt, although you can have a shawl wrapped around your shoulders. Keep in mind that you are not allowed to wear pants underneath the dhoti, and you will be asked to remove it and leave it in the cloakroom if you do.

Women need to wear a saree or long skirt. Churidar and any form of Western clothing are strictly prohibited. If you are not dressed appropriately, you can buy a set mundu, or white dhoti, from the temple premises and wrap it around your waist. That will serve the purpose.

Kuthiramalika Palace

Located very close to Sri Padmanabhaswamy is Kuthiramalika, the royal palace of the Travancore Kingdom that ruled mid to south Kerala from the 1700s to 1949.  This palace, built in 1848 is a large building complex of several royal buildings with ornate woodwork and artistic splendour. “Kuthira” is the Malayalam word for “horse,” and so “Kuthiramalika” means, “the horse palace.” The palace is named so for the 122 wooden horses that adorn its ceiling brackets.

The Palace Museum offers a guided tour of a section of the palace. The exhibits here include a fascinating collection of royal artifacts, including paintings, sculptures, weapons, and musical instruments. Among its most notable exhibits are the Belgian mirrors and the elaborately carved wooden ceilings depicting various scenes from the Puranas.

Outside the main palace building, there is another museum, Chithralayam Art Gallery, that acts as an art and photo gallery. The exhibits here showcase painted portraits of several members of the royal family and also photographs of important historical events pertaining to the Travancore royals.

By the time you finish your exploration of Kuthiramalika Palace, it will be noon and if you fancy a simple homely, vegetarian meal, check out the palace cafeteria. If not, head to Priyadarshini Planetarium on NH66 and you will find all kinds of restaurants on the way.

Priyadarshini Planetarium

Priyadarshini Planetarium, with the associated Kerala State Science & Technology Museum, is one of the best educational sites to visit in Trivandrum. If you are an Indian, then as you step inside this planetarium, you will be filled with a sense of pride as some of the models of satellites and rockets you see here were launched into outer space from a launch station located just a few kilometers from you.

The planetarium features a state-of-the-art projection system that simulates the night sky, to narrate the stories of astronomical phenomena, space missions, and the latest discoveries in space science. The Kerala Science and Technology Museum has a section that narrates the history and evolution of Indian space science. Another section offers several interactive exhibits that aim to explain complex scientific phenomena to you with fun experiments.

Shangumugham Beach

Finally, head to Shangumugham Beach, the most happening beach in Trivandrum city, for some spectacular sunset photography. In the evening, the beach lights up with local and foreign tourists alike. There are several clean food joints by the beach for light snacks. The park benches installed by the beach are all you need to sit back and watch the sun go down.

There is more to Shangumugham Beach than its scenic beauty. It is culturally significant due to the presence of the giant statue of Sagarakanyaka (Jalakanyaka or Mermaid) created by the renowned sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman. This 35-meter-long sculpture adds a unique artistic element to the beach and has come to be the identity of this beach.

Trivandrum Zoo

Trivandrum Zoo is the largest and most well-maintained zoo in Kerala. While most zoos keep the wild in dark, dingy cells where you see animals that seem to have lost their will to live, Trivandrum Zoo has large, open enclosures with nature-mimicking habitats. This means you can see the likes of lions and tigers roaming freely in their enclosures, making your visit worth it.

The zoo has a large population of animals, birds, reptiles, aquatic creatures, and feline varieties. There is a lot to explore here so plan to reach here by 9:00 am, when it opens. Expect to spend 3-4 hours in the zoo as that is how long it would take to cover the vast area.

Outside food is not allowed in, but there is a canteen inside that serves tea and snacks in reusable cutleries as a measure to reduce plastic litter. You will be surprised at how clean and green this zoo is, situated in the very heart of Trivandrum city.

After you are done exploring the zoo, head to the main canteen outside the zoo for your lunch. It will be packed as most people who visit the zoo end up having lunch here to explore the other attractions in the zoo complex.

Zoo Complex Museums

There are several museums in the Trivandrum Zoo complex and you may not be able to see them all in a single day as they close at 4:45 pm. So, I am going to guide you here on the two must-visit museums in the zoo complex.

Start with Sri Chitra Art Gallery, located closest to the canteen. Here you will find paintings by several international painters depicting different styles of paintings like the Russian, Chinese, and Indonesian. The Indian collections include Tanjaur paintings, Rajputana paintings, and the original paintings of Raja Ravi Varma of Kerala.

Next, head to Napier Museum, the largest and oldest museum in Kerala. This museum located in a beautiful garden is a Gothic-style architectural marvel in red sandstone, with blue and white geometric patterns. This is an archaeological museum with ancient sculptures, bronze idols, traditional musical instruments, and ceremonial masks. The museum also features a several ivory carvings, temple chariots, and historical coins. After exploring the museum, you can relax in the park surrounding it.

Other Museums in the complex are the Museum of Natural History, Keralam: Museum of History and Heritage, KCS Panicker Art Gallery, and Swathi Thirunal Art Gallery.

Vetticaud Church

If you have time and if you are not exhausted after all that walking, head to Vetticaud Church, also known as Madre De Deus Church. This church located on the shores of Vetticaud Beach is the largest and most beautiful church in Trivandrum. It is also a pilgrim center attracting devotees from all over Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

After spending a few minutes of prayer or reflecting in the church, head to Vetticaud Beach to watch the sunset. Have your dinner at one of the beach-facing restaurants here and wrap your trip to the music of waves crashing against the rocks.

PLACES TO VISIT NEAR THIRUVANANTHAPURAM – KOVALAM

No visit to Thiruvananthapuram is complete without a visit to Kovalam. Located 45-minute drive from Trivandrum city, visitors can choose to stay in either in Kovalam or Trivandrum. Staying in Trivandrum for the whole trip is hassle-free, but a night in a beach-facing stay in Kovalam can be a refreshing experience.

The best places to visit in Kovalam are Azhimala Shiva Temple, Sagarika Marine Research Aquarium, Kovalam Lighthouse, and the famous Kovalam Beach.

Azhimala Shiva Temple

At about 1 hour drive from Trivandrum and at 8 kilometers down south from Kovalam, lies a beautiful temple, the Azhimala Shiva Temple. This temple, perched on a scenic cliff overlooking the Arabian Sea, is famous for its magnificent 58-foot-tall statue of Lord Shiva. 

This statue of Lord Shiva in a meditative pose is made by a local sculptor with intricate carving and fine detailing. The adjacent Azhimala Beach is a calm and secluded beach where you can spend some alone time while enjoying a simple breakfast from the sea-facing temple canteen.

Sagarika Marine Research Aquarium

As you make your way to Kovalam Beach from Azhimala Shiva Temple, the first stop to hop over is the Sagarika Marine Research Aquarium. This is a small aquarium, but given its proximity to Kovalam Beach and also its nominal entry fee (Rs. 20 per adult), this is definitely worth a visit.

Visitors will find here many species of multi-colored aquatic life, local and exotic, swimming in large glass enclosures. The information displayed alongside the tanks is a great help in understanding the types and specialties of the organisms.

Kovalam Lighthouse

The next stop in Kovalam is the iconic red and white striped Kovalam Lighthouse that has become the landmark of Kovalam. Standing 118 feet tall, this lighthouse is situated atop Kurumkal Hill, offering panoramic views of the Arabian Sea, the coastline, and the lush greenery surrounding it.

This Kovalam Lighthouse is one of the few lighthouses in the country with a lift. You can go up to a level by the lift and then climb just two flights of stairs to reach the top for a spectacular view.

Kovalam Beach

Kovalam Beach, the most popular Kerala beach among international tourists, is where you are going to have the most fun in this Trivandrum Kovalam trip. This beach with its crescent shape has an inlet of shallow waters making it the perfect beach for swimming and surfing. You can also engage in water sports like speedboating, banana boating, parasailing, and jet-skiing.

The shore is lined by a vibrant market with some great restaurants and cafes.  Beatles Cafe & Grill House and The Crow’s Nest Café are two popular beach-side cafes. For a taste of local Keralan seafood, head to Ustaad Hotel by the beach.

Kovalam Beach has an active nightlife. Several of the cafes here offer live performances and organize events during weekends. You will also find many vibrant pubs and restobars in the vicinity.

Kovalam Houseboat

Spending a night in the Kovalam houseboat is one of the most popular tourist activities in Thiruvananthapuram. Book a traditional houseboat that is made out of reed, cork, and bamboo. Cruising with Kovalam Houseboat Tours is a great way to spend time in Kovalam backwaters. One can lounge around watching the sunset or villagers going about their way. The cruise offers unparalleled views of backwaters.

Are you on a Munnar trip and want to see something other than tea gardens? Then Eravikulam National Park safari could be something to think about. Learn all about what sightings are possible, safari timings and how to reach Eravikulam.

I am on a never-ending chase to visit any National Park or Wildlife Sanctuary on every journey that I am on. It is fascinating for me to explore the local wildlife and bird species and document them. On one of such journeys when I was on a road trip in Kerala, I happened to experience the Eravikulam National Park safari near Munnar. Eravikulam National Park is famous for Nilgiri Tahr, an endangered deer species and I was super excited to photograph them and know more about them!

Where is Eravikulam National Park

Eravikulam National Park is situated in the Idukki district, about 8km away from Munnar and has earned the title of the first National Park that opened in Kerala. Located approximately 2,000 metres above mean sea level, it offers picturesque views of the Munnar valley and the tea gardens. The national park is around 97 square kilometres but only a fraction of that is open to visitors! 

How to reach Eravikulam National park from Munnar

Private cars or taxis can be easily hired to reach here from Munnar. Motorbikes are available for rent and one can easily reach here on them. Public transport such as buses is available (board a bus going to Udumalaipettai from Munnar Bus stand).

History of Eravikulam National Park

Just like most National Parks in India, the protection of the species started only after losing a huge chunk of them! Rajamalai, as it was called in yesteryears, used to be a former hunting reserve for the Britishers before Independence. The park attracted hunters from all over the world to hunt Nilgiri Tahr for sport. Their peculiar shaped horns were why they were hunted.  

It was managed by the Kannan Devan Hill Produce Company until 1971. With almost extinct numbers of Nilgiri Tahr due to hunting and shrinking of natural habitat, in 1972 the land was handed over to the Kerala Government. Since then it has been transformed into a conservation area and is also known as Rajamalai Eravikulam National Park. 

The conservation efforts have paid off over the years and the park now houses over 860 Nilgiri Tahr (Census 2018) making it one of the largest populations in the world! The pandemic has brought even bigger cheer with a record 155 Nilgiri Tahr calves born in 2020.

Eravikulam National Park Animals and Birds

Apart from the main attraction of Nilgiri Tahr which is found in abundance, Golden Jackal, Jungle Cat, Dhole, Leopard and Tiger are some of the predators documented here. Some little-known animals such as Nilgiri Langur, Stripe-necked Mongoose, Indian Porcupine, Nilgiri Marten, Small Clawed Otter, Ruddy Mongoose, and Dusky Palm Squirrel are also found.

132 species of birds have been recorded which include endemics like Black-and-Orange Flycatcher, Nilgiri Pipit, Nilgiri Wood Pigeon, White Bellied Shortwing, Nilgiri Flycatcher and Kerala Laughingthrush.

Eravikulam National Park entry fee and timings

The National Park opens daily at 8 am and closes at 2 pm. The permit is available online as well as at a ticket window of the park gate. 

The permit charges for the Eravikulam National Park safari are

Indian Adults – INR 200

Foreign Nationals – INR 500

Ordinary Camera – INR 50

Video Camera – INR 350

Reservation fee INR 50 (Reservation counter 9 am – 3 pm at the Information Centre, Munnar)

When to visit Eravikulam National Park

Planning a visit to Eravikulam National Park depends upon when the park is open for visitors. The park is closed twice from July to August for their mating season (all national parks in India are closed during this time) and then the second time while giving birth to the calves in the months of January to March. 

So, the best time to visit the park is in the summer months – April to June or in the winter months from October – to January. I visited in December second week and the weather was perfect, and so was the sighting. 

Start the safari as early as possible in the morning so as to skip the queues, avoid crowds and in pleasant weather.

Visitors can spend as much time as they want at the top of the hill. You are allowed to hire a private guide with permission from the park if you book in advance.

Once you are done, you have to come back to the designated area for shared bus pick up wherein the buses will take you back to the ticket window station. 

If the weather is pleasant, the walk can be quite enjoyable with epic views of the hills. I personally liked the hike which was on a nice and flat concrete road (yes there is no forest or nature trail here), it had panoramic views, a well-laid path and there’s the chance to spot wildlife too. So, if you are expecting to go on a long trek into nature, I would recommend booking one with the park in advance.

I walked and walked and walked. I overheard a lot of groups who were disappointed as to not spot anything and that they wasted the money. But I didn’t lose hope, yet!

I saw a group of people gathered near some bushes and their excited voices meant they saw something. Yep, I finally managed to see the Nilgiri Tahr. The deer seem terrified with so many people pushing and shoving each other to get a glimpse. 

And it managed to escape away.

Most people from this group turned back, but I decided to go further. And I was rewarded with more sightings. 

Almost 2 hours into the Eravikulam National Park Safari, I was hungry and wanted to pee. I had seen paid eco-toilets on my way up so I decided to hurry back down. These are located a little way up a hill just beyond the souvenir shop. 

And just like that I was back at the bus pick up point, happy and satisfied to have seen the Nilgiri Tahr in the wild.

Because all the proceeds go towards the park maintenance. I love national park merchandise and I do pick up something or the other. I paid a quick visit and picked a t-shirt. Merchandise here includes caps, safari hats, t-shirts, fridge magnets and even little Nilgiri Tahr deers as souvenirs!

Places to visit near Eravikulam National park

Lakkam Falls

The Lakkam Waterfalls originate in the heart of the Eravikulam National Park offering breathtaking views. It’s by far one of the pristine waterfalls in the entire town of Munnar and you don’t need a national park permit to visit.

Entrance to the falls cost INR 20 and it provides a cool respite. It is located a few kilometres from the park, so if you are visiting make sure you ask your driver to stop here for a while.

Yellapatty Tea Gardens

The Yellappetty tea gardens are located on the Munnar – Kodaikanal route. Located 32 km from Munnar city centre the Yellappetty tea gardens can be reached after crossing the Mattuppetti dam. The small village of Yellappetty houses tea plantation workers that live happily surrounded by tea gardens. Read more here: Trekking in Yellapatty.

Where to stay in Munnar

Munnar is a family favorite destination and also popular among honeymoon couples. The pleasant weather allures visitors of all ages and interests to visit Munnar all year round. For the same reason, there are a lot of accommodation options in Munnar. 

I stayed at the Blackberry Hills Resort Munnar and it had the most beautiful unparalleled views of the tea gardens. My favourite part was their Hornbill restaurant whose location felt like it was suspended in the hills. They even have a walking trail from the restaurant to a village in the valley nearby which equals a birdwatching trail too.

Tips for Eravikulam National Park Safari

• Just like every national park in India, spotting a Nilgiri Tahr is not guaranteed. Over 850 deers are spread across 97 square kilometres of land which means the chances of spotting are less. They’re even less when you think that you’re only allowed to explore a few kilometres of that on a set walking path!
• But patience is the key. Keep your eyes and ears open rather than clicking selfies all over the way. 
• Don’t limit yourself to a particular distance. Push those boundaries for spotting wildlife and rewarding yourself with amazing views.
• Hire a guide for increasing your chances of spotting the Nilgiri Tahr.
• But if you still run out of luck, the views from the top of the Eravikulam National park safari are still well worth the ticket price. I still think that a visit to the park is worth it for the breathtaking views you can get from up here!

HOW TO GET AROUND KERALA

This Kerala road trip is based on a self-driven car so as to save time while travelling from one place to another. Ideally, it is best to hire a car that services the 10 days in Kerala trip from point to point.

If you are on a budget and have more days in hand, you can spread out the itinerary to suit your travel style. Public buses serviced by Kerala State Road Transport Services (KSRTC) ply between each town of Kerala and are comfortable and affordable. 

WHERE TO START THE 10 DAYS ROAD TRIP IN KERALA?

It is ideal to start at Kochi (formerly Cochin) which is on the southwest coast of India. All modes of transport – domestic and international are easily available to reach here.

DRIVING OR RENTING A CAR FOR A ROAD TRIP IN KERALA?

While many would feel like driving by themselves during the entire journey but be mindful that this itinerary involves going on mountain roads. I would recommend driving on hills, only if you have done this before. Also, you would probably be too tired driving all-around to actually enjoy the entire journey. 

Car through many rental services like Zoom Cars, Revv, Mychoize, etc. can be received at the Kochi airport. 

If self-drive is not your thing, hire a local guide who will take care of everything for you. On my latest trip to Kerala, everything was taken care my tour guide – C Satish. Day 1: Kochi

How to get from Kochi Airport to Fort Kochi

Kochi Airport is around 36 kilometres from Fort Kochi, so having a car to pick up is a must. In my 3 visits to Kochi, I always requested my hotel or tour guide to arrange for a car pick-up. This guarantees that the car driver is genuine and you don’t have to keep checking your phone if you are being taken in the right direction!

App-based taxi and auto services are also available. You can simply download Ola or Uber and book a taxi. However, many times these taxis are not available so charge more for unforeseen reasons.

Pre-paid taxis are also available from the booking counter in the Kochi Airport arrival hall.

Bus service is available for transfer from Kochi airport into Kochi city.

Things to do in Kochi in one day

Kochi, the largest city in Kerala, has historically been an important port city from earlier times. Reach Kochi by late evening so as to start the next day with a visit to Fort Kochi. With a history of the European spice route trade, there are many places in Fort Kochi reminiscent of that bygone era.

Fort Kochi is one of the most happening places in Kochi and has many architectural and heritage places. Beautiful artsy cafes, wall arts and heritage homestays line up the Fort Kochi area.

Kochi Beach, Mattancherry Palace, Pardesi Synagogue and St Francis Church are the must-visit places in Fort Kochi. Do not miss out on the working of Chinese Fishing Nets which have been functional for decades.

Day 2 in Kochi should be spent at the beautiful Cherai Beach as well as learning about the Chendamangalam Handlooms.

Day 3: Kochi to Munnar

On day 2 start early for the 5-hour road trip to Munnar. For Munnar, it is not about the destination, but the journey. Enjoy the hot and humid air giving way to chilly winds as the car passes the road with tea gardens on both sides.

Famous for the lush tea estates, which you can romance along the way while hoping that there is no roadblock due to elephants crossing the highway. Relax and enjoy the valley views while sipping on Chai after reaching! If you are not too tired, you can go for a short hike.

Things to do in Munnar

A short hike is possible to Echo Point, which is 15 km one way. Trekking in Munnar is also a great way to explore the tea gardens and Shola forests. Or you may choose some adventure sports like rock climbing and rappelling in other nearby towns of Munnar. Other trekking trails in Munnar include Top Station Trek, Chokramudi Trek, Meesapulimala Trek and Lakshmi Hills Tre,k amongst others.

Next, head towards the Eravikulam National Park to sight the endangered Nilgiri Tahr or the mountain goat. The 15 km journey, the waiting line and a small hike up the Kannan Devan hill will consume over 4 hours. On the way back, you may stop at the Mattupetty dam and head towards its catchment area if you want to try some water sports.

Day 5: Munnar to Thekkady

Gear up for another hill station of Kerala, which is 4 hours away from Munnar.  

Things to do in Thekkady

After reaching Thekkady, the most important place to visit is the Periyar National Park. Thekkady offers a boat safari on Periyar, and one can see wild animals on the river banks. The river has barren tree logs, and the landscape across the mountains looks breathtaking. Bird and animal sightings are possible here, and in the 2 visits so far, I have got some great shots! After the national park visit, the evening can be spent attending a cultural program – Kalaripayattu or Kathakali at the Kadathanadan Kalari, Mudra Cultural Centre.

Ayurvedic massage in Thekkady is also one of the things to experience. In Thekkady, there are many resorts offering ayurvedic retreats that are month-long ayurvedic treatment solutions for people suffering from chronic ailments. It is like a resort where people can stay for long durations and get their treatments done with consultation from an in-house doctor.

On the next day, before moving to the next destination, spend some time in the spice gardens, knowing and sniffing the organic produce. A guided tour of Thekkady spice gardens is an awe-inspiring experience of how each spice that we use in Indian cooking is made.

Day 7: Kumarakom to Alleppy or Alappuzha

Alleppey is the backwater town of Kerala and can be reached from Kumarakom by driving for 1.5 hours.

The backwaters paradise of Kerala should be experienced by not spending the time on a houseboat, which is expensive, but by choosing a homestay on its banks! Take a canoe ride, which will take you to small alleys wherein you can also do a village tour and watch the sunset over paddy fields.

Day 8: Varkala

This is Day 8, and time for some Vitamin Sea!

Varkala is a famous beach town with beautiful virgin beaches – Papanasham and Bekal. Take a dip or just relax by the beach listening to the waves crash.

Visit the picturesque Kappil Pozhi Lake, which is approximately 6 kilometres from Varkala town. It is surrounded by coconut trees that give this peaceful and tranquil lake some serious wanderlust vibes. On the way back, visit the red laterite cliff, which is one of the most popular tourist places.

Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple is one of the most important temples of Lord Vishnu and is now the world’s richest temple too. The temple has a sleeping Vishnu idol, which is a unique feature.

Spending a night in the Kovalam houseboat is one of the most popular tourist activities in Thiruvananthapuram. Book a traditional houseboat that is made out of reed, cork, and bamboo. Best time to visit Kerala?

The winter months (November to February) are ideal to visit Kerala. The temperatures are moderate and the humidity is less (read: bearable). The hills can get chilly in the morning and night, but maintain a comfortable temperature during the day.

However, winter is also the time when most people travel to Kerala. So expect to pay higher charges for cars and hotels. 

Kerala monsoon can be uncomfortable for some, but the months of July and August are popular with local tourists who want to chase waterfalls and enjoy a rainy vacation.

Is the weather in Kerala good for a road trip in Kerala?

The average summer temperature is 24°C-37°C, while the average winter temperature ranges from 17°C-33°C. It rains quite often throughout the year.

Must try food of Kerala?

Kerala food is a mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals, mostly cooked in coconut oil. Do try the delicacies like ‘appam-stew’, ‘puttu-kadala curry’, ‘Avial’ and ‘iddiyappam’ for breakfast or lunch. Just like the North-Indian thali, the Kerala thali is called sadya and is served traditionally on a banana leaf.

• Do not write on the palace walls or rocks at the beach. Let’s maintain the pristine heritage.
• Avoid wearing perfumes while going in the seawater or national parks.
• Blend in the culture by wearing the right clothes and eating the local food.

Munnar is famous for its snake-like steep roads which are blanketed with mist and fog and all of this is enveloped into valleys of tea gardens. Check out this blog on things to do in Munnar, Kerala.

Munnar was part of my Road trip to Kerala and I was excited to visit another hill station after Thekkady with its splendid backwaters and Periyar National Park.

BEST THINGS TO DO IN MUNNAR

Munnar is a hill station located in Idukki district in the state of Kerala. The name Munnar is believed to mean ‘Three rivers’. It was a former resort for the British elite class. 

Tea Plantation and Tea Factory

Even though the blog title says ‘Things to Do in Munnar other than Tea Estates’, I had to include tea because, well tea is everywhere in and around Munnar. It is like going to Paris and not visiting Eiffel Tower. Duh! You can stop your car and go into the tea alleyways (unless there is a fence and in most cases, there is!). The tea gardens certainly reminded me of my trip to Manas National Park (click to know why!)

Munnar valleys are the ideal place for growing tea spices, due to their weather and soil fertility. With the area successfully harvesting tea, more and more investments in the regions were done by private groups. Today, these plantations belong to several large private tea estates – including TATA. 

The tea plantations are privately owned in most cases so it is ideal to visit a tea farm where tourists are allowed to roam freely and even see and understand the process of harvesting.

Lockhart Tea Factory & Museum 

Lockhart Tea Factory and Museum is about 20km away from Munnar town which provides tea factory visits, plantation walks and tea tasting. There is a possibility of seeing workers, working on the tea plantation going about their work and can be photographed with permission. The factory tours are conducted in English every hour and can be easily attended. The duration is 25 minutes, however, visitors can spend more time in the plantations. 

After the factory visit, visitors are taken to a small museum that displays all the tea products. This is where the tea tasting happens. If you like what you taste, you can buy it over the counter at their retail shop.

Tour Cost: Rs. 200 per person for Indian tourists and Rs. 400 for foreign tourists. 

Another option for the Tea Museum is Kanan Devan Hills Tea Museum which is much closer to the town. However, the plantation visit is not allowed here and most functions of the factory can be observed from the viewing deck. This museum was set up by Tata Tea to exclusively showcase the origin and evolution of century-old tea plantations in Munnar. The museum essentially pays homage to the fact that Munnar houses some of the best tea estates in the world, and is thus among the most significant places to visit in Munnar.

Mattupetty Dam

Mattupetty dam is one of the favourite tourist places in Munnar. The dam of Mattupetty is a dam storing waters from the confluence of the mountain streams of Muthirappuzha River, Chanduvarai River and Kundale River. More than the dam, the catchment area has lovely scenery overlooking the hills and also serves as a picnic spot. The dam has an abundance of water at all times of the year which makes it a biodiversity hotspot. What adds to the charm of the place is its pleasant weather which persists almost all through the year. 

The local government has also set up many activities around the dam which includes watersports, boating, etc. Several of these activities are organized by the District Tourism Promotion Council of Idukki (Munnar). Apart from these, tourists can also choose to go for treks in the Shola forests that surround the dam.

Eravikulam National Park

About 8 km away from Munnar town, Eravikulam National Park has earned the title of the first National Park that opened in Kerala. Located approximately 2,000 metres above mean sea level, it offers picturesque views of the Munnar valley and the tea gardens. The national park is around 97 square kilometres but only a fraction of that is open to visitors!

This national park is home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr, a mountain goat species. Apart from the main attraction of Nilgiri Tahr which is found in abundance, Golden Jackal, Jungle Cat, Dhole, Leopard and Tiger are some of the predators documented here. This park allows a walking safari from a drop point. It is ideal to book a ticket in advance so as to avoid the park lines. Top Station, Munnar

One of the popular places, Top Station is one of the must things to do in Munnar. Top Station derived its name as it used to be the highest railway station in the valley. In earlier times, traders used the delivery system to transport tea to the plains. It was the uppermost station of the Kottagudi Aerial Ropeway. Tea from Kannan Devan Hill Tea Plantation was transported 5 km downhill from Top Station to Kurangani in Tamil Nadu. From there, it was further distributed all over the country and then to England.

Top Station View Point Munnar is surrounded by beautiful valleys and is a heaven for hikers and adventure lovers. It provides a perfect bird’s-eye view of the entire Munnar valley on a clear day. 

Top Station is situated 32 km from Munnar on the Kerala – Tamil Nadu border. It is easily accessible as there are frequent buses and cabs to reach here. Kurinjimala Sanctuary is close to Top Station which is popular for the rare Neelakurinji flowers. These flowers bloom once in 12 years. The next bloom of Neelakurinji flowers is expected in the year 2031.

TREKKING IN MUNNAR

Munnar has lovely trails in and around the town for small and long hikes. Some of the most popular ones are:

Through Tea Plantations

There are many local tour operators who offer half-day and full-day treks through tea plantations. These treks are generally easy to moderate and the average length is 10km to 20km. The price range for these tours is Rs. 1,000 – 2,000 per person. Check with your hotel/resort to know the best yet authentic tour operator for a tea plantation trek in Munnar. Many times, the resorts also offer it themselves depending upon where the resort is located. 

Yellapatty Viewpoint

The Yellappetty tea gardens are located on the Munnar – Kodaikanal route. Located 32 km from Munnar city centre the Yellappetty tea gardens can be reached after crossing the Mattuppetti dam. The small village of Yellappetty houses tea plantation workers that live happily surrounded by tea gardens. Read more here: Trekking in Yellapatty.

Phantom Mountain

A very short 400 meters hike leads to a beautiful valley view. If visitors are short on time, then this trek is worth exploring.

Meesapulimala Trek

This trek requires one full day for dedicated trekking. Meesapulimala is located 40 km away from Munnar Town and requires 4-6 hours of walking involved along the route and the trail leads to a wonderful mountaintop above the clouds.

PRACTICAL TIPS FOR THINGS TO DO IN MUNNAR

Bike rent in Munnar

Unfortunately, bike renting is no longer allowed in Munnar. Until 2018, this option was open, but the local government does not allow renting 2-wheelers for tourists. While there are many reasons, one of them being safety. Tourists do not have the habit of driving along with the snake bents of Munnar roads, which have caused a few tourist deaths before 2018.

That’s why taking a tour with an auto-rickshaw driver or a car driver is now your best bet to get around. It is possible to visit the Top Station, Eravikulam National Park and a few other places with the public bus from the centre of Munnar Town, but it is slow and clashes with your schedule if you are on a tight itinerary. 

Best time to visit Munnar

Being a hill station, Munnar is a good idea all time of the year. Although it is best to avoid the monsoon season due to heavy rainfall which will give zero views. Summer is when a lot of locals (from Kerala state) take respite in the hills from summer as well as people from neighbouring states. Munnar is also popular as a honeymoon destination. 

How to reach Munnar

The nearest airport to Munnar is Cochin International Airport, which is a few hours away by road. Another closest option is Madurai International Airport.

The nearest railway station to Munnar is in Aluva. From there, it’s possible to take a cab or local bus from the KSRTC bus station. There is also a daily bus from Alleppey to Munnar, which again takes about 5-6 hours – unfortunately we don’t have further information available on prices or times.

PLACES TO VISIT IN THEKKADY

Periyar Tiger Reserve

One of the best places to see in Thekkady is the Periyar Tiger Reserve. Periyar National Park, Kerala, has played a significant role in the conservation of tigers since the year 1978. And not only for tigers but many other endemic species of the Western Ghats, which is one of the biodiversity hotspots, as well as listed under UNESCO World Heritage Centre. 

Animals in Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

Unique species that are only found here include Malabar Flying Squirrel, Wild Pigs, Sambar deer, Red Mongoose, Indian Gaur, Lion-tailed Macaque, Nilgiri langur and Nilgiri marten. Approximately 40 tigers reside here in Periyar National Park.

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is known for the varied flora and fauna, which is why a typical jeep safari, which is popular in all National Parks of India, is not permitted here. Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Thekkady can be visited on the boat, which gives a chance to see all the animals in their natural habitat.

Kerala Forest Department (KFD) and Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) run 90-minute boat cruises on the Periyar lake. The lake is surrounded by the forest and has tree stumps standing out, making it a unique and stunning landscape.

Best of Thekkady tourist places: Periyar National Park Ticket Booking

It is better to book tickets online to save time in the queue. Even if you book online, you are required to go to the ticket counter to get the physical ticket. KTDC and Periyar Forest Reserve operate buses from the parking bay to the Periyar lake, from where the boats leave.

A nature walk is one of the best things to do in Thekkady. Nature Walks are offered by most resorts as their properties are intermingled with nature. These properties generally have a local guide and expert with whom you can go on a nature walk.

Nature walks help in connecting with the local flora and fauna and learning about their behaviours. Listening to the chirping of birds while knowing when and where they breed and reside is something surreal.

Thanks to the forests around, you will be able to spot an ample number of butterflies and also get a chance to photograph them. 

The walk is generally organised for morning and evening batches and lasts for 2-4 hours, depending on the interests of the visitors.

Bamboo Rafting in Thekkady

Just like slow water rafting in Manas National Park, bamboo rafting is one of the unique things to do in Thekkady. It is perfect for adventure enthusiasts as well as for tourists who want to try some offbeat experiences in Kerala.

Bamboo Rafting in Thekkady is a one-day activity which involves trekking for 4-5 hours through dense forests and reaching the river with a water current for rafting. Bamboo is used as a raft here, and the rafting route is extremely scenic, overlooking the best places to visit in Thekkady.

Bamboo rafting in Thekkady begins early morning and ends at sunset, taking the tourists through the most panoramic views overlooking the Periyar Lake. Being a guided tour, one gets to experience nature in its raw form with the chance to spot wild animals. 

Being a day trip, snacks are arranged by the team who is guiding the guests. And the bamboo raft is driven by a local.

Attend a Cultural Program – Kalaripayattu or Kathakali

Kalaripayattu is one of the oldest martial art forms in the world that originated in Kerala in the 3rd century. Considered among the oldest and most scientific martial arts in the world, the word ‘Kalari’ literally means ‘battlefield’ and ‘payattu’ means ‘training of martial arts. Kalaripayattu uses weapons such as swords and daggers, sticks, spears, maces, axes, arrows, discuses, catapults, boomerangs and others.

There are cultural centres in Thekkady that are putting their efforts into preserving this ancient art form and showcasing it to the tourists.

Kadathanadan Kalari, Mudra Cultural Centre and Navarasa Centre are some of the best places to see Kalaripattu in Thekkady. They run an hour-long evening show daily between 6 pm – 7 pm. Some hotels also run in-house shows.

Kathakali is a form of classical Indian dance. It is unique as it is distinguished by the elaborately colourful make-up, costumes and face masks that the traditionally male actor-dancers wear. The dance form is associated with storytelling through dance. 

Artists elaborate on their make-up and dress up, which takes a lot of time. In many shows, this is done on stage to show the process to visitors. 

Kathakali shows also take place in the evening which can be attended. The Navarasa Kathakali show is one of the most popular ones.

Spice Plantations, Thekkady

Thanks to the perfect weather of Thekkady, many traditional spices used in Indian cooking grow here abundantly. Most of the Kerala spices that are exported all over the country and the world grow in this region. Black pepper, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon and many other herbal plants grow here.

While shopping for these spices in Kerala is an absolute must, it is even more interesting to see their trees, fruits and learn about their life cycle for a local working in these spice plantations. Many plantation farms conduct tours for tourists. A Spice Plantation farm is one of the best places to visit in Thekkady with family.

We visited the Green Valley Spices Farm, which has a huge spice plantation and promotes natural and organic farming. A lady guide took us through the entire spice plantation, showing herbs used in Ayurvedic medicines to spices. We even saw the exotic vanilla creeper whose pod is expensive in the Indian market.

One of the most interesting plants to see was the cardamom fruit that evolves from the flower that grows at the base of the plant, and how they pluck the alternate fruits from a single stem. 

There is a treehouse inside the farm, which is made around a jackfruit tree and gives a 360-degree view of the plantation and a vantage point to photograph birds. I clicked more birds in this spice farm than in a national park!

Ayurvedic Massage in Thekkady

If you are looking for an Ayurveda Retreat in Kerala, then Thekkady is the right place for it. Thekkady is the hub for getting Ayurvedic Treatments in Kerala. Whether it is a chronic ailment or you want a refreshing body massage, everything is possible here.

My visit to Thekkady was immediately after Trekking in Munnar, so I chose to get a full-body massage done in Ranger Wood Nature Castle. The ayurvedic retreat offers month-long ayurvedic treatment solutions to people suffering from chronic ailments. It is like a resort where people can stay for long durations and get their treatments done with consultation from an in-house doctor.

The Ayurvedic massage treatments range from INR 1000 up to INR 3500 for one sitting that lasts for 90 minutes. Prior booking is ideal to avoid waiting for a long time.

Camping in Periyar

How would you feel spending your night by the placid lake, waking up to the chirping of birds and a hot cup of coffee? This includes food, trekking, boating, bird watching, and even an adventurous trip to the Gavi forest.

Tea Plantations and Tea Factory in Thekkady

While Munnar tea plantations are popular, Thekkady also has its fair share of tea plantations and tea factories. The Periyar River that flows through the Periyar region nourishes these plantations.  Tea plantation visit in Thekkady may not feature in the top places to visit in Thekkady, but I suggest you give it a chance. Vandiperiyar town is an important trading hub that hosts a number of tea processing plants and factories.

Connemara tea plantation in Thekkady is the perfect place to visit to understand tea manufacturing and processing. A one-hour guided tour takes visitors around the factory premises that are nestled between tea plantations. One can see tea harvesters going about their day, plucking tea leaves.

At the end of the tour, visitors can taste various types of tea and even purchase the same from the Connemara Tea Factory Outlet, Thekkady.

Other tea factories that offer tours are: Pattumalay tea factory is one of the few tea factories still using the orthodox manufacturing process.

PLACES TO VISIT NEAR THEKKADY

Gavi Forest, Thekkady

It is a small village which is a 1-hour drive from Thekkady. It is famous for its abundant flora and fauna. It is being promoted as an ecotourism spot by the Kerala Forest Department with options of camping inside the forest. Jeep safaris are the best way to explore the Gavi Forest.

Chellarkovil Waterfalls

Located 15 kilometres from Thekkady, the Chellarkovil waterfalls are stunning. Trekking to these waterfalls is also possible, and the Kerala Forest Department is promoting it as a one-day picnic spot. Spice garden tour, Trekking, and watching Waterfalls are some of the ways to spend time near Chellarkovil Waterfalls. 

Mangala Devi Temple

Mangala Devi Temple in Thekkady is a popular place to visit due to its rich 1000-year-old history. It is located at a distance of 15 kilometres from Thekkady. Interwoven with local traditions, the temple has a deep connection to Periyar. Because of the many legends attached to it, it is a pilgrimage site for the locals and tourists who visit Thekkady. 

The temple is located in a dense forest and offers a panoramic view of the Western Ghats. Mangala Devi temple in Thekkady is popular for its Pandavan architecture.

SHOPPING IN THEKKADY

Kerala is a shopping paradise. So why not indulge in retail therapy in Thekkady as well?

Spice shopping in Thekkady

If you want to buy one thing in Thekkady, it has to be spices. Thekkady is famous for spice plantations, and one cannot and should not resist buying fresh, aromatic spices from Thekkady. 

All the spice plantations have a spice outlet where one can buy the spices. That is the best way to support the plantation, and it is affordable in your pocket. You know where the spices are coming from. They are unadulterated, big in size, sold without oil removal and fresh from the farm where you just visited.

While wholesale buying is possible, they also sell small packets which can be utilised as souvenirs. Must buy spices from Thekkady are cloves, black pepper, cinnamon, green cardamom, nutmeg, bay leaves and betel nut.

Bargaining is possible if you are buying in bulk and are a large group. However, prices are subject to season, yield and market. I got cardamom for INR 260/100 gm, cinnamon for INR 100/100 gm and cloves for INR 150/100 gm.

Kerala Banana Chips

An evening walk in Thekkady led me to a street with stalls selling Kerala Banana Chips. The speciality of these chips is that they are fried in Coconut oil, which offers a very unique taste. Kerala Banana Chips are a must-buy in Kerala. Although these chips are available in all cities and towns of Kerala, I bought them here.

PRACTICAL TIPS FOR PLACES TO VISIT IN THEKKADY

Best time to visit Thekkady

Thekkady is pleasant all around the year, but it is best to visit during winters (November to February). It is also the ideal time for sighting migratory birds. I visited in May, and it was hot and humid, which can make moving around and walking a small distance uncomfortable. Monsoons are not a good time, as the approach roads are bound to landslides.

How to reach Thekkady

By Flight:

Thekkady does not have an airport of its own. Madurai and Kochi Airports are the nearest to Thekkady. Madurai airport is located at a distance of 136 kilometres from Thekkady, and Cochin International Airport is 190 kilometres away. The best way to get to Thekkady from Cochin or Madurai is by hiring a cab. KSRTC buses also ply between the places.

By Rail:

The nearest railway station to Thekkady is in Kottayam, located 114 kilometres away. The railway station in Kottayam is well-connected to major cities across India. Visitors can hire a cab from Kottayam to get to Thekkady, or even board a government-run or private bus.

By Bus:

The most affordable way to reach Thekkady from Cochin, Trivandrum and Kottayam is the government or private-run buses. Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses are available at regular intervals.

How to reach Periyar National Park

• By Road – Thekaddy is the closest town and can be easily reached by road from any major city of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
• By Train – The nearest railway station is Kottayam, at a distance of 97 km. Hire a car to reach here.
• By Air – Kochi International Airport and Madurai Airport are two of the closest airports located at the distance of 150 km and 159 km respectively. Hire a cab from the airport to directly reach here.

Flora of Periyar National Park

The park is covered with moist deciduous forest, tropical evergreen forest with more than 150 species of grasses and over 100 species of orchids. Trees commonly spotted here are mangoes, rosewood, teak, jacarandas, Indian conifer, plum, tamarind, royal ponciana, bamboos, fig, sandalwood, etc.

Animals in Periyar National Park | Periyar Sanctuary is famous for which animal?

Periyar has abundant fauna biodiversity which includes tigers, elephants, Malabar flying squirrel, wild boar, sambar, Indian bison, nilgai, sloth bear, jungle cat and others. With the thick forest cover, over 250 species of birds can be spotted in this park. Famous for the Malabar grey hornbill other birds that can be spotted are white-bellied blue flycatcher, frogmouth, black necked stork, darter, steppe eagle, brahminy kite, etc.

Over 40 species of reptiles and 150 species of butterflies are also found in the Periyar National park.

Best time to visit Periyar National Park, Kerala

The temperature ranges from 15 ºC to 34 ºC and the best time to visit is in winter – November to January. The park is closed during monsoon – from June to October.

Wildlife Safari in Periyar National Park | Boat ride on Periyar River

The most common thing people do at Periyar Tiger Reserve is to take a boat ride on the Periyar lake. The boat has a two-tire and you are allotted seats in the boat. The top tire is the best for better viewing options. Its duration is 1.5 hours.  We did the same and being a cloudy day saw only a couple of common water birds – Cormorant and Darter and a herd of wild elephants and Indian bison. We got a ticket on the spot after 30 minutes of waiting. Online booking is also available on the Kerala tourism website.

The boat ride timings are 7:30 am to 9:00 am, 9:30 am to 11:00 am, 11:15 am- 12:45 pm, 1:45 pm to 3:15 pm and 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm and it is ideal to reach there one hour before the ride begins.

We actually wanted to do bamboo rafting which is a full day activity from 8 am to 5pm which includes a three hour bamboo rafting and a three hour nature walk.  There are more chances of spotting birds and other mammals when you are actually doing the jungle trail but it was closed on that particular day for some reason. We did not have a spare day so had to settle for the boat ride.

There are a lot of other ways to spend time in Periyar National Park. Some of them are listed below so you can plan properly.

• You have to pay entry fees of Rs. 35 per person to enter the main park. As per the activity chosen, the value will be different.
• Jungle Patrol – This is a guide night activity in the park.  You can get its information and updated fee structure here.
• Bamboo Rafting – 8 am to 5 pm full day activity for Rs. 1500 per person
• Boat ride – Rs. 240 per person
• Jeep safari – between 5:30 am to 4:40 pm and costs Rs. 4000
• Tiger Trail – It is a trekking and camping programme for 2 nights and 3 nights. The trail covers an area of 20 to 35 km. The accommodation is in the middle of the resort and costs Rs. 6000 per person.
• Nature walk – A guide day trek for wildlife enthusiasts costs Rs. 220 per person
• Jungle camp – This is a tented accommodation programme and is the real jungle deal wherein you stay in the middle of the jungle. It costs Rs. 12000 for an overnight camp and min. 4 people need to book this.
• Guided nature walks– 7:00 am to 10:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Costs Rs. 750 per person.

Tips for sustainable Periyar National Park trip:

• Do not under any circumstances get down from your jeep ride.
• Wear camouflage colours which will easily blend with the jungle – shades of green, brown and grey.
• It is totally understandable to get excited when you spot a wild animal in the jungle. But do not make noises – whisper if necessary.
• Do not wear perfumes or body spray in the jungle.
• You will get super thirsty and hungry during the safari/rafting. Carry water and food but do not dispose of plastic or leftover food in the jungle. Keep it in your bag and dispose of safely once you return to the hotel.
• Do not feed anything to wild animals.
• Try not to point out birds. There have been instances where raptors take notice of pointing toward small, weak exotic birds and hunt them down.
• And last and not least, respect the guide. If you do not spot a wild animal do not blame them, remember you’re in a jungle and not a zoo to have surety of spotting animals.

Although I am not a serial camper, I have camped occasionally and enjoy the rustic charm attached to it. Imagine if one can camp without the hassle of packing. If you like this idea, then glamping is the answer! 

This tee-pee style Glamping site on the slopes of Meesapulimala near Yellapatty, the border village between Kerala and Tamil Nadu is one of the best things to do in Munnar.

What is Glamping?

If you are confused about what I am exactly talking about, I know the feeling. Even I was new to this concept before I went there.

Glamping means luxurious camping. It is a perfect combination of living in nature with the comforts of modern luxury. In most cases, glamping is sustainable in nature.

Glamping in Munnar: What to expect?

Senthil, the owner of Glamp Footprints also sometimes called Munnar Camp Footprints has aptly named this Glamorous Camping in the quiet valley. However, you really need to dig deeper to really understand the fine details that make this glamping site that should be highly sought out by families, couples, adventure enthusiasts and bird watchers for an elevated glamping experience.

Check-in Process

The team at Glamp Footprints provides thorough instructions on what is available on site, who is it for, where to park, and the check-in-check-out process. 

The instructions are very clear and laid out in a very easy-to-understand way. 

After arriving and driving up to the Yellapatty village, visitors are picked up and everyone walks towards the muddy road that leads to the Glamping site. The check-in time is at 11:00 am and the Check-out time is at 1:00 pm.

Once you arrive at the campsite, everything from how to be a guest at the property, to potential nearby areas of interest, trekking, and bird-watching is explained by the site manager.

Glamping in Munnar, Kerala: My experience

Although I would love to spend a longer duration at the camp, the couple of hours I spent here was nothing short of peaceful. 

I and my group reached Glamp Footprints for lunch and afternoon siesta after Trekking in Munnar (Yellapatty trail). 

From a hill nearby, we could see 3 elegant tee-pee-style tents. A well-laid path with endemic flowers on both sides lead us to the tents and made us feel welcomed and special.

It is difficult to imagine what all this cabin would have before entering it and all I can say is that it has great attention to detail. My entire group who entered the cabin went with a gasp of “oh my goodness, how luxurious!!”

The king-size bed on the wooden floor is inviting with its colourful bedspread and even colourful cushions. On the right, the wall had a lovely library and a reading corner overlooking the view outside.

The entire wall of the left side of the bed is the tree of life with cute fairy lighting decorating the cabin. It is an LED light so when switched on during the night, the entire cabin looks breathtaking. The wooden planks in the cabin give it a feel like you are transported to a tropical country’s resort.

Further up ahead is a platform where fresh towels are kept along with water bottles. The bathroom is clean and spacious with toiletries and running water.

Senthil and his team have thoughtfully done this glamping site in Kerala so that visitors can experience comfort and digital detox.

Other things to do at Glamp Footprint property

Explore the Property

Exploring Glam Footprints and the area around them is a thrill in itself. This hilltop glamping site is located on a few acres of private property. This gives full access to explore the trekking trails and forests that surround the property. While you can completely explore the property limits in less than 10 minutes, there are a lot of interesting sights and sounds to hear on their property.

Campfire 

Overlooking the Munnar hills, when the evenings become chilly, it is time to set up the bonfire. One level down from the tents, this campfire among the woods in pitch dark is a different thrill altogether. 

Once dusk falls, it’s really hard to not want to light a fire and lounge on the chairs around the site while waiting for the stars to come out.

Relax on the Property

Relaxing and not doing anything is the best way to spend time here. Read, catch up on movies in a pre-downloaded format or snooze. As there is no mobile network here, it is the absolute best way to take a break from city life and chill.

Vegetarian, as well as non-vegetarian food, is served here. It mainly consists of Kerala traditional items. In case you have any special requests for food, let the team know in advance and they will be happy to accommodate it.

Stargazing

Given its remote location, stargazing in Yellapatty under a clear sky is a great way to spend time. Enjoy an uninterrupted view of the night sky for stargazing.

Birdwatching in Munnar

Due to the strategic location of this glamping site in Kerala, the entire area is rich in biodiversity. So much so that there is a chance to spot wild elephants too. The topography of the area certainly reminded me of my Kumaon Birdwatching trip with ample birds to spot and photograph.

The Munnar hills are protected by Shola National Park and Eravikulam National Park. Due to the forest density, and good weather it is the perfect habitat for birds in this Biodiversity hotspot of Western Ghats. 132 bird species have been recorded here. Birds of Munnar include White-bellied Treepie, Greater Racket-tailed Drongo, Gold-fronted Leafbird, Yellow-throated Bulbul, White-bellied Treepie and others.

Trekking in Munnar

If you like trekking, there are over five trekking trails around Munnar including Top Station Trek. Depending upon the number of days visitors are spending here, the team at Glamp Footprints can plan a trekking trail. Whether you want it easy or moderate or difficult, you name it and you got it.

If hiking does not interest you then you can simply trek to watch the sunrise or sunset from a better vantage point.

Due to its location, the site and surrounding areas have leeches. The team will provide leech socks for your safety.

What to Pack for Glamping in Kerala?

Because of how luxurious this campsite is there are significantly fewer things you need to worry about bringing to enjoy your stay here. Here are the essentials you will need:

• Clothing: Trekking pants, loungewear, undergarments, socks
• Footwear: Sports shoes for outdoor and flip-flops for the cabin
• Soap: Although provided, if you have a particular brand, carry it
• Toiletries: Toothpaste and Toothbrush
• Organic Mosquito Repellent: Best to carry one of those

Concluding Remarks

Overall, this was another absolute gem of a stay that we had in Munnar. If Offbeat Munnar is your calling then do give a chance to Glamping in Munnar.  Considering what is offered at this campsite, this is truly a hidden gem of accommodations. The luxuries and attention to detail provided at this site are equal to if not exceed other glamping accommodations and glamping sites in India.

• Reuse the towels as it takes energy and time to get them cleaned from the town.
