Purana Qila, is one of the oldest forts in the city of Delhi and has been witness to the timeless history that unfolded decade after decade. This is exactly why visiting Purana Qila is one of the best things to do in Delhi.

Excavations done by Archeological Survey of India suggests that Purana Qila was built on the remains of the old city of Indraprastha of the times of Pandavas. Even today, Purana Qila stands all by itself giving us the brief history of time. 

PURANA QILA HISTORY

Purana Qila built by Humayun, the second Mughal Emperor which led to the planning of the city of Dinpanah, as a part of its new project of the capital city. Later, it was renamed as ‘Shergarh’ by SherShah Suri who took over the reins after defeating Humayun in the year 1540. He added few architectural structures to the fort which led to it being known as the ‘Sixth City of Delhi’. 

The history of Purana Qila rewinds to the time of Pandavas. It is said that the excavations were identified as the Painted Grey Ware Culture which was used during the times of Mahabharata. 

Built on the banks of the river Yamuna, Purana Qila was one of the major places of the new city project of Humayun, named Dinpanah. During the reign of SherShah Suri, two forts were constructed by him which remained incomplete. 

Later, during World War, Purana Qila served as a refugee camp for the Japanese soldiers and during the India-Pakistan partition days, it was a stopover point for people crossing over.

PURANA QILA ARCHITECTURE

The architecture of Purana Qila mainly depicts mediaeval style of Mughal Architecture with huge fortifications. It is mainly beautified with blue stone work. 

There are three entrances to Purana Qila. The main entrance or the gate is Bada Darwaza which means a Big Gate and is in use in today’s time as well. 

The Second Gate is named Humayun Gate as from this gate, Humayun’s Tomb is visible. 

The third gate is Talaqi Gate or the gate which is no longer in use or an abandoned one. These forts remind me of Lohagad Fort and Kumbhalgarh Fort.

All the gates here are two stories and are decked up with marble and blue stone work. At the top of the gates are small jharokhas which resemble the architecture of the forts in Rajasthan.

PLACES TO SEE IN PURANA QILA, DELHI

Qila-i-Kuhna Mosque

Built by Sher Shah as a symbol of his royal aspirations, when he defeated Humayun, this mosque was meant for his personal use. 

The architecture of this mosque is based on Indo-Islamic style and has a single dome with five gates or the openings, built mainly for the Friday prayers. 

The walls of the mosque are done up beautifully with the red, black and white marble and depicts geometrical designs on them. The structure of the building resembles that of a Rajputana building owing to the mix of Indian and Islamic architecture. There are two octagonal turrets attached to the end of the wall at the end. 

It is said that inside the mosque for the repairs during the ancient times, rice paste, jaggery, black lentils and lime were used. People in the ancient times were quite technologically advanced and also used eco-friendly products for use. 

Sher Mandal 

Sher Mandal was an octagonal, two-storied structure built from red sandstone and white marble, made especially for Sher Shah as his pleasure retreat; however after his passing away Humayun made it as his library who died here itself after having a fall from the stairs.

Khairul Manzil Mosque

Not in the Purana Qila complex but located just opposite to the entrance gate of Purana Qila is Khairul Mosque built for the wet nurse of Akbar whose name was Maham Anga. She was Adham Khan’s mother who was a General in Akbar’s army. 

Its looks are quite simple as compared to the Qila-i-Kuhna mosque however it has beautiful ornamentation on the gates as it is also very large in size. It also houses a madrasa inside it.

Purana Qila Museum 

Also known as the ASI Museum, it houses the excavations done in the general area of Delhi including that of Purana Qila.

The Museum also displays pottery from the various river beds of Yamuna gathered over the ages. 

The museum is open on all days except Fridays and Public Holidays from morning 9 am to evening 5 pm.

Stepwell & Hammam 

There are two small excavation sites within the Purana Qila complex. One of them is a stepwell. Though dry now, it gives us an idea about the prevailing water circulation systems during that time and the architecture used to construct them. It is a much smaller stepwell than the locally located Agrasen ki Baoli.

Located close by to the Step well in the Purana Qila complex is the Hammam or the Bath House of that time. It is a brick structure in a dilapidated state with three small rooms with the remains of terra cotta pipes. It had a unique provision of temperature controls for hot and cold water. Kunti Devi Temple 

One of the lesser known places to visit in Purana Qila is this temple which is understood to have connection with Kunti, mother of Pandavas. It is said that this temple dedicated to Shiva and Durga was built by her and hence the name. Other than the historical importance, this temple has nothing much to offer with regard to sightseeing.

Purana Qila Light & Sound Show 

In the evening after the fort timings are over, the old fort comes alive with the light and sound show known as Ishq-e-Dilli. It is a beautiful multimedia extravaganza narrating the story of the yester years. 

It starts from the times of Prithvi Raj Chauhan and ends at the times when the Delhi Metro was launched. It is a must watch show if you are a history buff. It is functional in both Hindi and English and starts with Hindi narration around 7:30 pm and continues till 8:30 pm. English one starts at 9 pm. However, as of today it is non-functional as it is being upgraded. The duration of this show is 60 minutes and no shows are played on Fridays. 

Purana Qila Lake 

Lake is located just outside of the Purana Qila which offers a beautiful and serene atmosphere in the chaos of the big city. 

It has lovely fountains that are functional in the evening along with all lit up Purana Qila at the backdrop making it more beautiful and scenic. 

Purana Qila boating offers a boat ride of 20 minutes at a charge of Rs. 100/-. This lake is quite deep and offers paddling boat options too. Purana Qila boating is an experience in itself.

PLACES TO VISIT AROUND PURANA QILA 

National Zoological Park 

Just adjacent to the Purana Qila complex, around 500 metres away is National Zoological Park. It was opened in the year 1959 and houses more than 130 species of animals like the giraffe, chimpanzees and zebras and some of the rare birds like peafowls. Many conservation programmes are being run here successfully making it a must visit place near the Purana Qila. 

National Science Centre

Lodhi Garden 

Located at a distance of around 3 km away, Lodhi Garden is a must visit as it offers the most clean, green and scenic area of the city of Delhi. India Gate 

Located around 3 kms from Purana Qila, stands tall another monument which has witnessed history for decades. Earlier the Amar Jawan Jyoti, the eternal flame was lit here which is now shifted to the National War Memorial in the memory of the martyred soldiers of 1971 war. The monument gives us a great sense of pride and patriotism.

National War Memorial 

To commemorate the sacrifices of our martyred soldiers in War, National War Memorial has been built in the year 2019. The purpose of this memorial is to connect people to the stories of the war heroes and to invoke patriotic feelings in the generations to come.

ABOUT QUTUB MINAR COMPLEX

The Qutub Minar Complex was built by the first ruler of the Delhi sultanate, Qutub-Ud-Din Aibak, and later on, completed by his successors over a period of 150 years. The monument stood tall facing all the attacks and natural calamities to date, narrating the grandeur it witnessed over the years. 

Qutub Minar’s height is 72.5 meters and the base diameter is 14.3 meters, making it the tallest brick minaret in the world.

QUTUB MINAR COMPLEX HISTORY

Back in the 12th century, this part of North India was ruled by Mohd. Ghori from the Ghurid dynasty who was known to be the invader from Afghanistan. 

Qutub-ud-din Aibak was a General in Mohd. Ghori’s army was responsible to look after the invaded lands in India. After the death of Mohd. Ghori, Aibak formed his own kingdom and started to rule under the name of the Mamluk dynasty thus establishing the rule of the then Delhi Sultanate and him being the first ruler. 

Qutub Minar facts say that after Qutb-ud-din Aibak, his son-in-law Iltutmish added stories to it, and was repaired and refurbished by Mohd bin Tuglaq and Sikandar Lodi after the events of lightning and earthquake. 

The Qutub Minar Complex is now protected and looked after by the Archeological Survey of India under its Delhi circle of monuments. Others are Agrasen ki Baori, Purana Qila, and a few more.

QUTUB MINAR COMPLEX GUIDE 

While Qutub Minar always grabs attention, the entire complex has many fantastic monuments that should not be missed.

Qutub Minar

Replete with sandstone and marble Qutub Minar architecture astounds visitors.

Qutub Minar is a five-story monument out of which the first three are built with red sandstones, the fourth is made of marble and the fifth is a mixture of both the two. It is said that, architecturally, it was inspired by the Minaret of Jam in Afghanistan and hence was based on the Afghan style of architecture. 

Each story of this monument has a balcony that adorns beautiful designs. From the bottom to the top, one can observe the change in the style of construction and architecture due to the change of time when they were built. 

Few architectural experts say that it can also be categorized under Indo-Islamic architecture as the laborers who built them were locals and were overseen by the Muslim architects thus giving it a good cultural blend. 

One can find the inscription on the stories of Qutub Minar. These are written in Arabic and are the verses from the holy book of the Quran. Have a look at such an architectural blend at the Mandu fort complex.

Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque 

Quwwat-Ul-Islam mosque was known as the Jami Masjid in the early days of its inception. It was then renamed as Quwwat-Ul-Islam Mosque meaning the ‘Might of Islam’. 

The mosque mainly has a central courtyard and also a big prayer hall. One could observe a large massive stone screen standing in front of the prayer hall. The screen is beautifully carved and has inscriptions from the holy book of the Quran. 

It is one of the oldest structures in India depicting the architecture influenced by the Ghurid dynasty. Eventually, many additions were made to this place by Iiltutmish and Alaundin Khilji. 

The building was built of red sandstone, grey quartz, and white marble, however, the mosque is now in ruins and being looked after by the Archeological Survey of India.

Alai Minar 

This is the only unfinished structure in the complex and is associated with the fierce and over-ambitious Alaundin Khilji. 

He wanted to outshine the work of Qutubudin Aibak and thus wanted to build this Minar which was supposedly double in size as the Qutub Minar. He wanted Alai Minar to be so tall that everyone in the world would recognize the might of the great Sultan. He believed that the height of the Minar would depict his greatness and courageous nature. He also wanted the Quwwat-Ul-Islam mosque to be increased by four times and hence there were four gates planned to be constructed to accommodate the big size of the mosque. 

Although in ruins, it looks beautiful and gives insight into how beautiful and majestic it would have looked if it were completed.

Iron Pillar of Chandragupta Maurya 

Weighing around 6 tonnes, this Iron Pillar forms one of the important parts of the Qutub Minar Complex. 

It is around 1600 years old and is exposed to different weather conditions in the city of Delhi, but it is standing tall without even an ounce of rust on it making it an amazing piece of metal for study by metallurgy experts. 

It has inscriptions in Sanskrit and Gupta Brahmi language which date back to the time of Chandragupta Maurya and have been believed to have been erected to commemorate the victory of the king in various battles. It was dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It was first believed to be erected in Udayagiri which is located in present-day Madhya Pradesh and then brought to Delhi.

Tomb of Imam Zamin 

Along with these monuments, the Qutub Minar Complex also houses the Tomb of Imam Zamin. Imam Zamim was a Turkestani Imam who lived in this Qutub Minar Complex during the reign of Sikandar Lodi. He came to Delhi in the 15th Century and was the Imam of the Quwwat-Ul-Islam mosque. 

This tomb was constructed by Imam Zamin himself and was buried a few years after his death. The tomb is a small sandstone structure with an octagonal base. 

Tomb & Madrasa of Alauddin Khilji 

This is the only example of the Madrasa and Tomb combination in India and a part of the Qutub Minar Complex. The madrasa was built by Aladdin Khilji to propagate Islamic learning and his tomb is located within the madrasa. Though a mighty ruler, Alauddin Khilji, his tomb is the most simple in the city of Delhi as also it lies in ruins today. 

It is said that Firoz Shah Tuglaq made a few repairs to the tomb but today one finds it in a secluded state. It is said by Sufi saints that it was a sight of pilgrimage earlier and people used to tie threads for the fulfillment of their wishes. 

Tomb of Iltutmish 

Another important part of the Qutub Minar Complex is the Tomb of Iltutmish. It is the first tomb of a Sultan in India and was built by Iltutmish himself. It is located in the North West direction of the Quwwat-Ul-Islam mosque. 

The outer of the tomb is plain but the inner part is rich in decorative aspects. It has three beautifully carved arches. 

The entrance has beautiful geometrical patterns and engraved motifs like lotus, diamonds, and wheels which also gives an insight of the local architecture prevalent at that time.

Alai Darwaza 

Stands in the southern direction of the Quwwat-Ul-Islam Mosque in the Qutub Minar Complex, is the Alai Darwaza. It was a part of the massive enlargement project undertaken by Alauddin Khilji after his win over the Deccan part of India to show gratitude towards God for his victory. 

Under this project, he wanted to enlarge the Quwwat-Ul-Islam and made four gates adjoining it in all four directions. As per his plans, only Alai Darwaza could be constructed as he died after its construction. It looks like a square-shaped domed house with arched entrances. It depicts Indo-Islamic architecture and is amongst the first structures built by such architecture in India. 

Sanderson’s sundial 

Gordon Sanderson was the archaeologist of the Archeological Survey of India and this sundial has been installed to commemorate his achievements. He was appointed to undertake research on several historical buildings in Delhi, Agra, Gwalior, and nearby places.

Smith’s Folly 

Folly, or the architectural disaster as mentioned by historians, is a cenotaph or a chhatri-shaped structure placed in the Qutub Minar Complex in Mehrauli, Delhi. 

Qutub Minar has been struck by lightning and shaken by earthquakes making it vulnerable and efforts have been taken the time and again to restore the minaret. One such effort was made by Maj Robert Smith directed by the British Governor General of India, Lord Wellesly. He placed a Hindu-style cupola on an Indo-Islamic structure which looked absolutely out of place and out of sync. Hence, it was taken out and placed on the lawns of the Qutub Minar Complex.

Best time to visit Qutb Minar complex

It is advisable to visit Qutub Minar in winter as the cool weather makes it comfortable for sightseeing. 

The complex is open every day from 7 am to 5 pm. It opens up again at 7 pm in the evening for night viewing and closes back at 10 pm. 

The experience at night is totally different from that of the day as many of the structures including the Qutub Minar are all lit up at night beautifying it to another level.

How to reach Qutub Minar by Metro, Bus, Taxi, Auto 

The nearest metro station to Qutub Minar Complex is Qutub Minar Metro Station which is on the yellow line of the Delhi Metro Rail Network. The approximate distance of Qutub Minar from the metro station is 1.60 Kilometres. Auto Rickshaws and taxis are available here and one can also take a DTC bus which has a good frequency.

Elephant Falls

Elephant falls is also known as Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew in the local Khasi language. It is located at a distance of 12 km from Shillong’s central market in the Upper Shillong area.

It is said that Britishers had spotted this fall near a huge rock that resembled an Elephant which inspired the name Elephant Falls, Shillong. However, the elephant rock is not seen anymore as it got destroyed in 1897 due to an earthquake.

Elephant Falls in Shillong is a set of three falls. The first and the second are at a short height however the third one is the tallest of all. There is a flight of steps towards the approach of all three falls.

The view is beautiful as all the falls are covered with lush greenery. The more you go down the flight of steps, the more scenic it becomes.

It is a small park that houses a mini zoo with a Deer Park and showcases the best of the rose beds in the state and carpet grass too.

Butterfly Park is closed on Sunday and opens every day from Monday to Saturday at 10 am and closed by 4:30 pm every day except Saturday, which closes by 1 pm.

Located at a distance of around 95 km from Shillong, Dawki is a border town in the state of Meghalaya.

As one approaches Dawki, one can observe the lush green hills, deep ravines, and beautiful Umngot river, the cleanest river in Asia, which makes the place look more beautiful.

When the water in the Umngot river is still, it appears to be transparent and clean, however during monsoon months because of the constant addition of water to the river bed, it may appear muddy.

The suspension bridge on the river gives an amazing view of the place which connects the Jaintia and Khasi Hills. Beyond Dawki is the Bangladesh Border which is marked by Friendship Gate or Maitri Dwar, built-in 2018 as a sign of friendship between the two countries.

An annual boat race is held here in the month of March/ April and one can plan a visit at that time.

Mawlynnong Village

Asia’s Cleanest Village and Meghalaya’s pride, Mawlynnong is located close to Cherrapunji.

Home to the tribal community in the state of Meghalaya, this village has proved that one can adopt modernism and still keep their culture alive.

Khasi Monoliths

Located around Cherrapunji, this place houses the construction of the ancient times which serves as a tribute and remembrance of the fallen members of the Khasi tribe. Their ashes have been laid in the cenotaphs here.

While getting inside the cave, one can see the constant dripping of water from the roof of the cave and the innumerable forms of stalactites and stalagmites.

Umiam Lake or Bara Pani

Home to water sports and other adventure activities, Umiam Lake is colloquially known as Bara Pani and is located 15 km North of Shillong. It is a manmade lake (reservoir) and it offers Swimming, Kayaking, Water cycling, scooting, and Boating in the lake. These adventure and water sports activities are very famous among tourists making it among the best-visited places in Shillong.

SHILLONG FAMOUS FOOD

Tungrymbai

If you see locals on the streets of Shillong lined up for food, it has to be Tungrymbai. It is a local curry-like preparation of fried pork with fermented soybean, seasoned with ginger garlic, and salt. Locals eat it with either rice or roti. It helps them to keep warm in the cold weather. This dish can be eaten in the by-lanes of Police Bazar.

Jadoh

It is a spicy pulao kind of dish mainly prepared with Rice and Pork. There can be variations of Chicken and Fish too. It is available as street food as well however the locals make it as a part of celebratory meals during parties and get-togethers as well. Many restaurants and cafes serve this dish in the areas of Police Bazar and near Don Bosco Museum.

Dohneiiong

Shillong is famous for Pork dishes and Dohneiiong is no different. It is a Pork dish, the taste of which resembles food from Chinese cuisine as it mainly uses Chinese sauces and black sesame seeds for its preparation. If accompanied by rice, it forms a complete meal.

Pineapples

Meghalaya is one of the major pineapple producer states in India, Pineapples here are found in abundance. They are amazingly delicious, sweet, and juicy and can be found with the street vendors which sell them cleaned and in a fruit salad, cut way sprinkled with masala. Any local market would cater to these tasty pineapple treats which makes it a must-have food during the Shillong trip.

Betel Leaf

One can take a taxi/ cab from Guwahati airport to Shillong.

By Train

The nearest railway station to Shillong is Guwahati. Guwahati Railway Station is well connected with all major cities across India through a large web of the Indian Railway Network. From there one can avail of taxis/cabs to Shillong.

By Road

Shillong is well connected to Guwahati by National Highway 40. One can avail of an option of going by either of the State Buses of Assam or Meghalaya as also a taxi or a cab.

Nainital Lake/ Naini Lake

Nainital lake is divided into two sections: Mallital and Tallital. The northern part is known as Mallital and the Southern part is known as Tallital. It is a treat to walk around this beautiful lake where natural beauty blends with the smiling and welcoming local population. The magnificence of Nainital has inspired many world-famous writers and poets, making it one of the best places to visit in Nainital, Uttarakhand.

Locals take pride in the lake and it is equally cherished by tourists. It is a pear-shaped, freshwater lake, located at a height of 1938 m above sea level. The scenes here are picture-perfect with the lake surrounding lush green hills. 

The days are usually sunny and mornings and evenings are a bit chilly. It is the favourite spot amongst tourists, especially honeymooners. One can have a stroll at the lake or just sit on the bench there chit-chatting with friends and family.

Naina Peak

Naina peak is one of the favourite Nainital Tourist places. Being the highest hill in the Nainital district, Naina peak offers the best views of Nainital valley and Nainital city. It is located at a height of 2615 m above sea level and is also called by the name of China Peak or Cheena peak by the locals. 

This road is motorable to an extent and can be trekked ahead for the best views. It offers great insight to Trekkers and Photographers into various flora and fauna of the region along with the breathtaking views of the lush green hills. The peak sights the view of the mountains of the border of Tibet as also the Nanda Devi peak. 

Naina Peak also houses Naina Devi Temple which is positioned on top of the hill which is among the sixty-four Shaktipeeths. It is considered very sacred in Hinduism. Another Shakti Peeth that I have visited is Kamakhya Temple Guwahati and it was a powerful experience. 
One needs to trek to reach the Naina Devi temple. The entire trek is through Pine trees, Oak trees and beautiful Rhododendrons. Trekking through Rhododendrons is always an amazing experience. I enjoyed the Rhododendron blossoms on Triund trek in Himachal and would highly recommend doing it here.

Tiffin Top 

Tiffin top is also known as Dorothy’s seat. It was constructed by Col J.P. Kellet of the British Army in memory of his loving wife who died in a plane crash along with his four children. 

It is located at a distance of 4 km from the Mall Road in Nainital and is at a height of 2290 m from the sea level on top of the Ayarpatta region. One can either trek to this place or can take a pony which is available from the Pony stand in the city. On the days of clearer weather, one can see the Great Himalayas from here. 

Tiffin Top is one of the biggest attractions in Nainital among tourists and trekking enthusiasts. Tourists can enjoy beautiful scenery, great weather and the amazing freshness of the hills making it one of the best places to visit in Nainital. 

The name tiffin top was kept when people started flocking to the place with their pre-packed tiffins to enjoy family picnics there. One can also enjoy hot beverages and noodles offered at the local shops here. 

St. John’s Church Nainital

St John’s Church happens to be one of the oldest buildings in Nainital and the first of its kind of Methodist Church in India. This makes it among the top-rated sightseeing places in Nainital. 

It is named after Bishop Daniel Wilson of Kolkata. He had come here and had to stay here in an unfinished building in the wilderness as he got sick, for a longer duration of time. Jim Corbett was a follower of this place and visited this place often. 

The architecture of the Church is Neo-Gothic and is frequented by students of architecture to understand structures of that time. The backside of this Church has a cemetery where the victims of the deadly landslide of 1880 are buried and also houses a brass memorial with their names mentioned on it. 

Pt. G.B. Pant High Altitude Zoo 

It is located on the Sher ka Danda Hills at a height of 2100 m, GB Pant Zoo in Nainital is one of the best High Altitude Zoos in India, with others being in Gangtok and Darjeeling. 

It is one of the most visited sightseeing places in Nainital. It is home to big cats like Siberian Tiger, Bengal Tiger, and Leopard cat as also animals like Himalayan Bear and Tibetan Wolves. One can spot different varieties of birds like Macaus, Parakeets and Pheasants. It also offers views of beautiful flora and amazing landscapes. The Zoo organises various programs on days of the importance of Nature Conservation. 

Gurney House 

Currently a private residence and located just about 10 minutes walk from Mall Road in Nainital, Gurney House is dedicated to Jim Corbett and his family. 

One can visit this place only by prior appointment by sending an email to Nilanjana Dalmia, the granddaughter of Mr Verma who bought the house from the Corbett family. One can book an appointment by sending an email at nilanjanadalmia@gmail.com or walk-in at the house. It happens to be a colonial-style house with a lot of space in front and back. It showcases all the precious belongings of Jim Corbett like his trophies, books, fishing rod etc.

Snow view Point 

If you are fond of watching snow-peaked mountains with the beautiful and misty lining of clouds surrounding it, this is a must-visit place for you. Located at a distance of just 2 km from Nainital town, this place offers breathtaking and photography-worthy views of snow-peaked mountains of the greater Himalayan range. 

This viewpoint can be reached both by road and aerial ropeway. The ropeway offers amazing views of the town as also the Naini Lake. For a clearer picture of the Himalayan range, a pair of big binoculars have been placed so tourists can have a closer and clearer look at the snow-capped mountains. The place also encompasses a small temple and a Tibetan monastery.

Land’s End 

As the name suggests, there is no land after this cliff which is why it is called Land’s End. If you seek adventure on your trips, this is a must-visit place in Nainital, for you. It is located at a height of 2118 m from the sea level and around 4 km from Nainital town.

Pangot & Kilbury Bird Sanctuary 

Pangot is a remote Himalayan village and is located approximately 13 km from Nainital town. It is a bird watchers paradise. It houses nearly 580 species of birds both endemic and migratory. 

Not only bird watchers but this place is of great interest to photographers and trekkers as it offers amazing and picturesque views along with lush greenery which makes it a perfect place to spend one’s day holidaying with friends and family. 

It has something to offer to all kinds of tourists thus making it one of the best things to do in Nainital. Carrying your camera is essential and if possible binoculars too. Eco Cave Garden 

It is located very close to Mall Road in Nainital and is looked after by Nainital Tourism. It is famous especially amongst children for its rocky caves in the shape of animals, hanging gardens and a musical fountain. 

The fountain has audio-visual effects and the place is lit with petroleum lamps to keep the natural look of the place intact. The popular caves are Panther Cave, Tiger Cave, Bat Cave, Apes Cave, and Flying Fox Cave. This garden was built to give an insight to the tourists of the Wildlife in the Himalayan region. This is a great place to spend a day with kids.

The Hive Cottage

The Hive is a tastefully maintained heritage property from yesteryear. We stayed in the Kipling 2-bedroom suite. Our rooms were sophisticated with comfortable beds and branded drapes, which just proved how thoughtful the hosts were. The bathroom and sheets were very clean.

The food was done on request and it just felt like home to be eating hot rotis, dal and vegetables. It was lip-smacking good. Breakfast was good too but had limited options.

The views from the property of the valley are nice and the Mall road is within walking distance from the property. We had a lovely time sitting by their backyard and photographing exotic birds while sipping on hot tea. It can be booked here.

About Mandu Madhya Pradesh

Mandu was actually called Shadiabad by its Mughal rulers which literally means ‘City of Joy’. 

Located in the Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh, Mandu takes us to the ancient times of happiness and joy through its architectural extravaganza. It is a major tourist attraction in Malwa region along with Ujjain and a perfect one day trip from Indore.

Unmissable places to visit in Mandu Madhya Pradesh

This small town of Mandu holds around 40 monuments which are etched in history as important and notable places. The monuments, palaces and ruins here are spread across the perimeter of approximately 20 sq. km.

Jahaz Mahal 

Mandu in Madhya Pradesh offers the best of genius work in architecture found in India. Jahaz Mahal, is an engineering extravaganza built during the reign of Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din Khilji the then-ruler of Mandu in the late 15th century who was known to have a royal consortium of 15,000 women. 

Jahaz Mahal was built to accommodate a large number of women’s family members. It is double-storeyed and is located between two artificial lakes (Munj Talao and Kapur Talao) on a narrow strip of land. 

The reflection of Jahaz Mahal can be seen on the water of the lake giving an impression to people that it is floating like a ship and hence the name Jahaz Mahal as Jahaz in Urdu means ‘A ship’. 

Jahaz Mahal is open from 6 am to 7 pm with a nominal entry fee and an extra charge, especially for video shooting.

Hindola Mahal 

Built by Hoshang Shah in the 14th century, Hindola Mahal was reconstructed by Ghiyas-ud-din Khilji by the 15th century. 

The palace gets its name Hindola which means ‘swinging’ because of its sloping side walls. It was constructed in a way to transfer voice from one end to another, especially during the time of royal discussions. 

The Mahal or palace forms part of a larger set of buildings of the royal fort complex comprising Jahaz Mahal, the Hindola Mahal, the Taveli Mahal, and the Nahar Jharokha. 

Have you been to Orchha Fort? There is a similar complex named Orchha fort complex quite similar to this one on the banks of river Betwa. 

Hindola Mahal is T-shaped and was believed to be used as an audience hall or an open-air theatre. In the evening, after the tourists have visited the fort complex, the Hindola Mahal opens for the light and sound show. 

The love story of Baz Bahadur and Rani Roopmati is narrated by renowned actor Ashutosh Rana through a wonderful theatrical execution. It takes us back in time offering emotions of love, happiness and sorrow, tragedy both. It plays in both the languages English and Hindi.

Rani Roopmati’s Mahal 

There is a poignant love story attached to Rani Roomati Mahal from where the name is derived. 

Baz Bahadur was the last independent ruler of Malwa region. Once he was on his hunting expedition and he came across the shepherdess who was a great singer too. Baz Bahadur, who was an ardent lover of music and arts was smitten by her voice and fell in love with her. He told her to accompany him to Mandu his place and she agreed on the condition that she will only live in a palace from where her beloved Narmada river is visible. The palace was built for Rani Roopmati to have a view overlooking her favourite Narmada river. 

However, their love story was short-lived as Baaz Bahadur had to fight a battle with Adham Khan, who was Akbar’s General and ultimately had to flee to save his life as his troops were outnumbered by Akbar’s. 

Roopmati poisoned herself thus ending her life and also the love story. 

Rani Roopmati Mahal shows beautiful patterns of Afghan architecture and was built in phases during different periods.

Rewa Kund

Rewa Kund, built as an extension of Rani Roopmati Mahal and the pavilion, was an artificial lake built to ensure proper water supply to Rani Roopmati Pavilion. 

Rewa is another name for the sacred river Narmada in which the Rani had a deep faith and was a great worshipper. Rani often came here to worship and to pay respects to the divine mother river Narmada. 

Today, it is used as a resting place for tourists as it gives beautiful and serene views to rest, relax and take photographs. Because of the famous love story and the beautiful surroundings, this place becomes an unmissable place to visit in Mandu.

Baaz Bahadur’s Palace 

Baaz Bahadur palace happens to be a twin-storied structure, located on top of the hill and built by Khilji Sultan Nasir-ud-din for the last ruler of Malwa, Baaz Bahadur. 

It houses big courtyards, large halls and terraces giving photography-worthy looks from all angles. It is placed in the vicinity of Rewa Kund which was located as an extension of Rani Roopmati Mahal which she often used to visit. 

The palace depicts an amazing blend of Mughal and Rajput architecture. There is also an octagonal porch which overlooks the beautiful garden. 

When we walk through the palace it speaks about the tales of history and shows us the time from how far we have come from the ancient days of Baz Bahadur to today.

Hoshang Shah’s Tomb 

Mandu, Madhya Pradesh is an outstanding example of Afghan architecture and this tomb is greatly known for its latticework and dome as it is the first ever structure fully made of marble, in India. 

It was constructed before the Taj Mahal and Shah Jahan sent the chief architect to study this tomb and to understand the beauty and intricacies of Afghan architecture. 

The monument has a well-built dome with intricate marble work. The doorway also has bearings of lotus and blue-enamelled stars. 

Jama Masjid, Mandu, Madhya Pradesh

Jama Masjid was built during the reign of Hoshang Shah and completed during the reign of Mahmud Khilji in the 15th century. It places itself near Mandu Bazar and is adjacent to Hoshang Shah’s tomb. 

It has three large domes, a courtyard and fifty-four smaller domes and because of its majestic look and opulence, it is said to be inspired by the Mosque of Damascus. Important monuments like this mosque in Mandu are looked after well by the Bhopal circle of the Archeological Survey of India.

Asharfi Mahal 

Asharfi palace was built during the reign of Mahmud I, the first of the rulers of Khilji dynasty. It is located opposite Jami Masjid and to reach the place there is a flight of steps which becomes distinct in recognizing the place mirroring itself with the placement of a mosque. 

It houses three distinct buildings built at three different times. The first one was a madrasa or a school, the second was a mausoleum and the third was Asharfi Mahal which was commemorated as a tower of victory against the Rana of Chittor. 

Most of the towers and buildings of this place have collapsed and its structure is in ruins now. Locals say that it was built hurriedly and carelessly which led to this breakdown. 

It falls under the reign of the Archaeological Survey of India.

Echo point 

En route Rani Roopmati’s Pavilion, is a tourist point in Mandu which has become very famous among tourists. Visiting echo point is one of the most looked forward to places to visit in Mandu, Madhya Pradesh.

Kakra Koh Waterfall 

Photographers and trekkers, Kakra Koh waterfall is for you. 

This waterfall is 7-8 km before Mandu. It garners excellent views during monsoons as the waterfall is at its full capacity giving a picturesque view of the mountains. 

The waterfalls go through the deep ravine and look absolutely beautiful and scenic.

Taveli Mahal 

Located towards the south of Jahaz Mahal, it forms a part of the Mandu Fort complex. It is a two-storied building once used as a stable and house for guards during the Mughal rule. It is now the office of the Archaeological Survey of India and houses a small museum too.

Places to visit around Mandu 

Maheshwar 

Maheswar is located at a distance of 40 km from Mandu and takes approximately an hour to reach by road. Known to be the capital of Holkar state during the 18th century, it is a destination which attracts pilgrims, tourists and shopaholics. 

Along with beautiful ghats on the bank of the river Narmada, it showcases a historic fort which interests history buffs. The Maheswari weavers are famous for their silk and cotton sarees and dress materials as also the accessories made out of it and date back to the 5th century. 

Mhow 

Also known as Ambedkar Nagar, Mhow is an Army Cantonment and is the birthplace of Sh. Bhimrao Ambedkar the author of our Indian constitution. Located around 23 km from Indore, its distance from Mandu is approximately 70 km and it takes one and half hours by road to reach there. It has beautiful pathways and walking areas. 

Once can have a look at the army installations lined on the roads giving a different look to the town. Mhow boasts of great shopping opportunities with smocking (a type of embroidery) dress materials and gowns as also home furnishings at the shops located in the main market.

Omkareshwar 

Omkareshwar is a religious place is associated with Lord Shiva and is amongst the famous 12 Jyotirlingas and considered very sacred. Read about Trimbakeshwar Temple – another jyotirlinga that is located in Maharashtra.

It is located at a distance of around 100 Kms from Mandu along the banks of the sacred river Narmada. There are two jyotirlingas here Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar. The views of ghats and the river are breathtaking and house many temples and shrines. 

One of the biggest tourist attractions here is the Jhula Pul which gives an amazing view of the Narmada river and the temple which is built quite akin to the Laxman Jhoola of Rishikesh.

Dhar 

Dhar city is located in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh like Mandu. This ancient town was founded by Udaji Rao Puar who was a Maratha General and was given the responsibility to expand the Maratha empire here. Dhar houses an amazing fort, a palace, a beautiful mosque and a serene lake making it worth visiting for tourists to spend some time here.

Choral Dam 

This is a great attraction amongst tourists owing to its tranquillity and serenity. Best time to visit Mandu Madhya Pradesh

Summers are scorching in Madhya Pradesh. The heat hinders the energy required for sightseeing. The waterfall and the reservoirs etc are in full bloom during this time of the season. Must try food in Mandu

Dal Paniya 

This is a local delicacy quite similar to that of Daal Baati. Wherein the baati here is first boiled in hot water and then roasted in tandoor. Many restaurants and hotels serve this local food which they are proud of.

Baobab Trees 

Mandu is home to these trees native to Africa and locals call it Khorasani Imli. It is a kind of fruit and can be added to curries for its tangy taste. Local vendors can be seen selling these outside the fort complex and other sightseeing places too.

The nearest airport to Mandu is Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport, Indore. Indore is very well connected to all the metros and major cities of India through various flights which commute on a regular basis. From Indore, one can hire a taxi to Mandu or take a bus from the Sarvate bus stand or Gangwal bus stand. It takes around three hours to reach the place. 

By Train

Mandu does not have its own railway station. The nearest railway station to Mandu is Ratlam, about 124 Kms. It is a major train junction located on the Delhi-Mumbai mainline. From Ratlam too, one can either take a bus or book a taxi to reach Mandu.

By Road 

Mandu is very well connected to major cities of Madhya Pradesh through a good road network.

Orchha settled on the banks of the river Betwa and was discovered by the Bundela Rajput King, Maharaja Rudra Pratap Singh in the 16th century. The Orchha fort complex is different from the ones in Rajasthan like Kumbhalgarh or the ones in Maharashtra like Lohagad Fort. Rajasthan’s forts were built on Mewar architecture however this one is a blend of local Chandela, Mughal and Mediaeval architecture. It was built by Maharaja Rudra Pratap Singh and more features were added to it by its subsequent kings to beautify it. 

The fort of Orchha depicts the grandeur and stories of valour of Rajput Bundela Kings. One of the major tourist attractions in Orchha is the light and sound show which starts only after the fort is closed for visitors during both the summer and winter seasons. 

The sound of running horses in the background, the lions, war-like situations and the narration of Orchha’s glorious past take visitors deep into history, experiencing it today. It is operational in both Hindi and English languages and has different timings as per the season.  

Raja Palace 

Raja Palace forms a major part of the Orchha fort complex. As the name suggests, it is the main palace where the King and the Queens resided. It was constructed by Raja Rudra Pratap Singh in the 16th century and was later completed by King Madhukar Shah in the 17th century. 

The exterior of the palace is very simple and bare, however, the interiors are very lavish and grand. It is decorated with beautiful architectural designs and murals and has various theme-based works of art about the Gods, Mythical creatures and people. 

A part of this temple has been converted into Ram Raja Temple, dedicated to Lord Ram. As Lord Ram is worshipped here within the palace, this place is the only shrine of Lord Rama in the country where the Lord is worshipped as a King, making it to the list of important places to visit in Orchha.

Sheesh Mahal 

Places to visit in Orchha cannot be complete without visiting the Sheesh Mahal. Once a residential palace of Maharaja Udait Singh, King of Orchha, it was built to give the king a peaceful and private place to rest and retreat. Much like the palace of mirrors in Jaipur and Bhuj, this is similar and opulent. 

A part of this grand palace has also been converted into a modern-day hotel with all the lavish amenities and is accounted as one of India’s major Heritage Hotels. Jahangir Palace 

Orchha in Madhya Pradesh is a place which speaks volumes of friendship and hospitality. The Jahangir palace was built during the 17th century, by Bir Singh Deo for the emperor Jahangir, his friend, on his maiden visit as a gesture of warm welcome. It’s an architectural marvel and is a three-storied structure built around a square with marvellous sculptures, hanging balconies and delicate chhatris. 

Palace depicts beautiful Indo-Islamic architecture and is marked by different courtyards, rooms, intricate balconies and domes. This palace marks evidence of a friendship between two rulers of different communities. It is now under the aegis of the Madhya Pradesh Archeological Department.

Raja Ram Temple | Orchha Temple

It is also known as the Orchha temple and is one of the oldest temples in India and is considered to be very sacred. Built-in the 16th century, this is the only place in India where Lord Rama is worshipped as a King and that too in a palace. A guard of honour is given to the Lord every day and police personnel are deployed as the guards of the King. The food provided to the Lord too is royal in nature. Armed salutation is given to the Lord every day. 

This Orchha temple was built by Raja Madhukar Shah for his queen Ganesh Kuwari. The legend says that Ganesh Kuwari went to Ayodhya to get an image of Lord Rama to enshrine in her new temple in Orchha. However, as the construction of the temple was not complete, the idol of the Lord had to be placed in the palace temporarily. 

When the construction got completed, the idol was to be moved to Chaturbhuj Temple however the idol refused to be removed from its place. As such, the palace was converted into a temple and Lord Rama was worshipped as King. Here, Lord Rama is sitting in Padmasana and spotting his left foot is considered to be very auspicious. Chaturbhuj Temple

As the name suggests ‘Chaturbhuj’ means one who has four hands. This temple refers to Rama as an avatar of Vishnu. It was originally built to house an idol of Lord Rama which was brought from Ayodhya to be enshrined here. However, the idol refused to be removed from its place and hence Raja Rama Temple was built within the Palace. The image of Radha Krishna is worshipped here. 

Architecturally, this temple has tall spires in the shape of spine cones four in number resembling the four arms of the Chaturbhuj. It resembles the Basilica in its looks.

Royal Cenotaphs

The purpose of building cenotaphs is to remember and commemorate the great rulers of the Bundela dynasty who gave grandeur and magnificence to this place. 

These are fourteen of the kinds built on the bank of the river Betwa. They were built from the early 16th to 18th centuries. Here too like other structures the architecture is a fine blend of Mughal and Bundela (Rajput) styles and speaks greatly of the cultural influences of that time. 

These are built on a raised platform usually and designed as tall and square shapes with chhatris on the top. Orchha in Madhya Pradesh offers an enigmatic combination of history with spiritualism which marks it boldly on the tourism map. 

Laxmi Narayan Temple

It is built at a place around 2 km from the Orchha Fort Complex, this temple is dedicated to goddess Laxmi, who is the Hindu goddess of wealth. It was initially built by Maharaja Bir Singh Deo in the year 1622 however because of low maintenance it was in a bad shape. 

Later it was reconstructed by Maharaja Prithvi Singh in the year 1793. Like other monuments in Orchha, this temple too is an architectural beauty which is rectangular in shape and the walls depict beautiful paintings and murals. The themes of these paintings are mostly from the Ram Charit Manas and from India’s first struggle for independence in the year 1857. 

Phool bagh 

As the name suggests, Phool bagh is a garden which fascinates visitors with its greenery. It maintains all the aesthetics of the Bundela kingdom. 

It houses beautiful fountains in the centre of the place which has an amazing system of water ventilation and it keeps the area cool. There are two wind-catching towers which are named after the Indian months of Saawan and Bhaddon which are perforated on the top to catch air and the bottom of these towers are connected to the reservoir. The aeration and the water systems are such that it helps the area to cool and hence these are called the cooling towers of Orchha. These are the lone examples of the Persian system of cooling in India.

Rai Parveen Mahal 

Rai Parveen was a great poet and singer and was known as the ‘Nightingale of Orchha’. The palace has three stories and the central hall the palace has beautiful paintings showing the various moods of Rai Parveen. The architecture of the palace is such that it ensures cool temperatures even during heated summer days. It has been seen that the temperature inside the palace is said to be ten degrees lower than the outside temperature. Alongside the palace, there is a beautiful garden, also known as the Anand Mahal Bagh.

Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary 

Out of the many places to visit in Orchha, Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary offers amazing opportunities for wildlife spotting, birding and photography. It was established in the year 1994 and lies within the area where the Betwa river flows. 

Compared to other wildlife sanctuaries in Madhya Pradesh, this one is small, around 45 sq km. Wildlife enthusiasts may not be able to spot the big cats like Tigers and Leopards however animals like Jackal, Sloth Bear Nilgai and Blue Bull are among the most seen. 

There are around 200 species of birds including the in-house as well as migrant birds which can be seen here. One can spot peafowls, Swan, black swans, peacocks, Jungle bush quail and many more. 

Shahid Smarak of Chandra Shekhar Azad 

Orchha becomes relevant to this legendary hero as he spent a few days here during his days of exile and made a creditable contribution to India’s freedom struggle. It is situated around 4 km from Orchha and gives a comprehensive account of his life spent here.  

Rafting in Orchha

Jhansi 

Located at around 13 km from Orchha and just half an hour’s drive, Jhansi town is well known for India’s struggle for independence. Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi played an epic role in the freedom struggle. It was ruled by Chandela kings in the early 11th century and later was ruled by Peshwa I. Having importance in history, Jhansi houses a magnificent fort, beautiful gardens and Chhatris (Cenotaphs) of its rulers which forms an important part of sightseeing. 

Khajuraho 

The place is known for its beautiful sculptures on temples. There are around 85 temples here, each built in sandstone with various shades of pink, buff and yellow. Located at a distance of around 185 Kms from Orchha, this place is a must-visit for people who are connoisseurs of art.  

Gwalior 

Another historic town closeby to Orchha ka Kila is Gwalior which is located at a distance of 120 Kms or a two hours drive. Orchha has hot weather. The temperatures in summer can go up to 45/47 degree celsius making it very difficult and exhausting to go sightseeing.

From September, the temperatures begin to fall making it pleasant. These temperatures keep Orchha vibrant till the month of March. One can visit Orchha between these months.

Ideal months to visit are October and November when the temperatures are cool and the weather clear thus making it ideal for moving around places and sightseeing.

About Pachmarhi

Bison Lodge Interpretation Centre

The name of Capt Fedrick Forsythe is very significant to Pachmarhi. 

Bison Lodge and Interpretation Centre was once his house which is now converted into a museum and depicts life-size models of the flora and fauna. 

It also houses various pictures, models, graphs and maps which give an exact impression of the actual animals and birds found here. It has marked its place in history as it is one of the oldest museums in Madhya Pradesh. 

Located around 2 km away from the main Bus Station, this is the first place in Pachmarhi to visit to obtain tourist permits for various Pachmarhi tourist places. One can also book jeeps and guides for the Pachmarhi sightseeing. The tour guides take visitors to all the places to visit in Pachmarhi guiding you for the full course of the day. 

Bison Lodge Interpretation Centre is open from 8 am to 6 pm every day.

Pandav Caves

If you are a history buff and legends interest you, then this is a place for you. 

According to a legend, Pandavas came to this place along with their wife, Draupadi. During their exile, they excavated five caves meaning ‘Panch’ in Hindi, for them to lay low and to pass their time in anonymity.

Along the premises of this place is a beautifully done-up garden with all the seasonal flowers and other local flora. The greenery here is a treat to watch. 

Pandav Caves are open from 7 am to 7 pm, every day.

Dhoopgarh

Dhoopgarh is the highest point in Pachmarhi at a height of 1350 metres and the views from here are breathtaking. 

People come here for the picturesque views of Sunrise and Sunsets. 

At night, the lights of neighbouring towns like Itarsi are visible from here which gives a mesmerising look and is a photographer’s delight. This place looks beautiful all year through however the best season to visit is monsoons as the place gets filled up with soft cottony clouds and engulfs itself in the greens. 

It is possible to trek to Dhoopgarh or reach it by vehicle. 

Dhoppgarh is open from 8 am to 6 pm, all days of the week. 

Jata Shankar Caves

One gets enchanted with the beauty and gets mesmerised by the magnificence of Jata Shankar Caves. 

In order to reach the caves, there is a flight of steps going into the depth of a ravine between the huge rocks. Moving towards the end of the steps is Trishul of Lord Shiva and naturally formed Lingam. 

I have visited caves having a Shiva lingam at Badami Cave Temples which also has beautiful sculptures and carvings.

If you are interested in Geology and are interested in various formations on the surface and beneath the earth, this place is a must-visit as the caves house the stalactites. I have seen stalactites formation in Meghalaya in India and Halong Bay in Vietnam and the formations are breathtaking!

As per the legend, Lord Shiva hid in this place from Bhramasur. One can find two ponds here, which are enriched by seasonal springs, one with cold water and the other with hot water. The structure of this cave resembles Sheshnag which is a Snake god with 1000 heads. This shrine holds great importance for the locals and the people staying around.

Rajat Pratap Falls

Emerging from the trek of a small Apsara Vihar waterfall through the rocky terrain is a tall waterfall of height 350 feet and stands 30th in India for its height. 

Raja Parapat Waterfalls seems like a silver lining emerging from beautiful greens which is why it is also called Silver Falls. 

This place is best for photography, videography, trekking and bird watching too. It is open throughout the day and the best time to visit is during or after monsoons. This fall is one of the biggest of the many waterfalls Pachmarhi tourism is blessed with which is why it is one of the best places to visit in Pachmarhi.

Bee Falls 

The name itself suggests a connection with the Bees. 

It is named Bee Falls as it sounds like a buzzing bee from a distance. It is the most visited waterfall in Pachmarhi, highly subscribed by locals and tourists. 

This natural waterfall is sourced by nearby perennial small streams which are in full during monsoons. The place is very scenic. Not only is the waterfall beautiful but also the trek to reach the place is very beautiful. One can even reach the pool of this waterfall and a take dip there. 

There are other waterfalls in Pachmarhi as well like the Duchess Fall and Apsara Falls which also form an important part of Pachmarhi famous places.

Reechgarh

Reech means Bear.

The name itself suggests it’s an abode of Bears.

With its huge rock-like and cave-like shelters, it boasts of being home to the magnificent animal, the Bear. One has to hike around a kilometre to reach this place. One has to go up and down huge boulders to move around this place which reminds us of our Bollywood movies. One can click lots of photographs here as the views are outstanding.

Chauragarh Temple

Chauragarh temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. 

There is a tradition to offer Trishul to the Lord in this temple. On the day of Shivratri, many devotees come here and offer Trishul as heavy as 150 kg and as long as 15 feet in height. 

These offerings on Shivratri are considered to be auspicious and a thanksgiving gesture to the Lord for fulfilling their wishes. The trek is tough however the scenes from the temple are breathtaking and photography worthy.

Priyadarshini Point/ Forsythe Point  

Places to visit in Pachmarhi are all close to nature – green clad mountains, waterfalls and numerous nature trails. 

Forsythe Point gets its name as Capt Forsythe first came to this place and discovered Pachmarhi. It’s a beautiful viewpoint with various ranges of hills overlapping each other and clad with soft clouds creating a mist in the area. 

Taking a camera to this point is a must. One can reach this point after a trek of about 400 metres and view one of the most exquisite sites in Pachmarhi.

Mahadeo Hills & Gupt Mahadev 

Pachmarhi in monsoon is breathtakingly beautiful and serene. 

Located at around 10-12 km from the Pachmarhi town, Mahadeo Hills is the northern part of the Satpura range. 

These hills are one of the three highest peaks in Pachmarhi and house two ancient temples of Bada Mahadev and Gupt Mahadev. It is 40 feet long and happens to be one of the ancient cave temples in Pachmarhi. 

The inner Sanctorum of this temple is very narrow, one has to actually squeeze in to get there and can accommodate only 7-8 people at a time.  This is a place where spirituality and adventure go hand in hand.

Best Places to visit near Pachmarhi 

There are two places which cannot be ignored when we talk about Pachmarhi sightseeing. They are Tawa Dam and Satpura National Park in Madhai.

Tawa Dam and Reservoir

Tawa Dam has been constructed on the confluence of two rivers Tawa and Denwa. 

Tawa river is a tributary of the Narmada river and Denwa is a tributary of the Tawa river. This dam was constructed keeping in mind the water and hydropower supply to the people of Madhya Pradesh. The confluence is encircled by the Satpura ranges making it extremely panoramic. This reservoir is always full as the rivers that feed it are perennial rivers. 

Sunsets viewed from the dam site are loved by tourists and photographers. Adjacent to the dam is a beautiful resort of Madhya Pradesh Tourism. 

One can also go for a cruise on the river which is organised by them. While cruising, one can spot marsh crocodiles. Boating and bird watching are other attractions here which keep tourists glued to the property. 

Satpura National Park, Madhai

Also known as Satpura Tiger Reserve, it is included in Project Tiger since the year 2000. 

It covers both Bori and Pachmarhi National Parks and covers Hoshangabad and Chinnwara districts of Madhya Pradesh. 

It is home to various animals like Leopard, Sambar, Cheetal, Nilgai, Bear, Black Buck etc. It is also home to various birds and innumerable plant species. One can approach the Park from Madhai which is a part of Satpura Bioreserve. 

There is a Madhya Pradesh Tourism resort at the edge of Denwa River in Madhai. Tickets for Jungle Safari can be booked here. One has to boat across to reach the National Park and stay at the Forest resort there as well. The calm and serene water, scenic beauty and the location of this place rightly explain why it is on the top of the tourism map of Pachmarhi as also Madhya Pradesh.

Sheesh Mahal & Kaanch Mandir

This made me remember my visit one day trip to Brussels and the beautiful palaces.

Sarafa Bazar 

Sarafa Bazar is one of the famous places in Indore. Sarafa Bazar is a place which offers two different experiences at the very same place but at different times of the day. During the day it is a jewellery market like any other in the city however after the day’s activities are over, this very same market turns into food heaven. The street is very similar to Manek Chowk of Ahmedabad whose history is known through Ahmedabad Heritage Walk. 

Sarafa Bazaar, Indore offers region-specific, mouth-watering dishes which satisfy one’s appetite for awesome food. Food items like Bhutte ka kees, Garadu, Sabudana Khichdi and Dahi bada are some of them. This place also offers amazing food combinations like Poha-Jalebi, Rabdi-Jalebi, Doodh-Jalebi. • Kopra Patties – Native to Indore is Khopra Patties which is a snack item, deep-fried, to be eaten with lots of green and tamarind chutney. Available at Vijay Chat House at both locations in Sarafa Bazar and also at 56 Dukan. Out of all the places to visit in Indore and things to do in Indore, this should not be missed.
• Bhutte Ka Kees –  This dish mainly looks like Upma, made from Corn cob. Green chillies and coriander add to its taste. Available in many shops at both Sarafa Bazar and 56 Dukan
• Shikanji – Shikanji usually is a lemon drink however Shikanji of Indore is quite different from the conventional one. It’s a creamy drink of milk with lots of dry fruits.
• Garadu – It’s a type of Yam, like sweet potato especially grown during winters. It is deep-fried and eaten as chat with a good blend of chutneys.
