When Courtyard by Marriott closed for renovation, there was quite a bit of disappointment among the regular customers. The cafe, restaurant and the pool were the highlights of the hotel. However, cheer came back on when the hotel reopened as Le Méridien, Ahmedabad, a premium category in the Marriott group.

Whether you are a local looking for a staycation or you are a tourist staying in the city for Ahmedabad sightseeing or planning to travel around Ahmedabad, or you are here for work, the location of Le Méridien Ahmedabad is the best.

LE MÉRIDIEN AHMEDABAD REVIEW

I was invited for dinner at Bayleaf Restaurant, 2 weeks after the hotel officially reopened. And I requested a detailed hotel tour to better know and review the property.

I was welcomed with a cold beverage and asked to wait for the staff. As I let the high ceiling lobby and its modern chandeliers sink into my photo gallery, Mr Arjun Deoskar, Director, Food & Beverage, and Chef Viklesh Kumar greeted me. 

Over the next 30 minutes, we went over the transition of the property, what has stayed the same, what has changed and what has become better. Here’s the property tour and why I will return for a relaxed staycation soon.

Rooms at Le Méridien, Ahmedabad

The property features 164 guest rooms and suites, each designed with a calm palette, mid-century silhouettes, and bespoke accents that nod to Ahmedabad’s textile legacy and architectural landmarks. Poised as the visual anchor, the bespoke lobby art is an ode to the rich heritage of Ahmedabad, representing a confluence of movement, culture, and life – inviting guests to explore Ahmedabad’s layered legacy at a single glance.

The bedrooms are thoughtfully designed with spaces that feel like a luxurious escape—perfect for the corporate workers and families who want to unwind. 

I particularly loved the way the property is paying homage to the local craft and architectural landmarks with an Ahmedabad map painted in each room.

Dining

Le Méridien Ahmedabad offers an interesting and decadent mix of dining options. 

The Market 

It serves global cuisine with local influence in a lively all-day setting. Present in the vibrant main lobby of the hotel, this is the popular choice of in-house guests as well as visitors who want to dine. 

The buffet options are varied with a mix of vegetarian, non-vegetarian, local and global cuisines. From soups, starters, to mains and desserts, the options are many.

For moments of play, Le Scoop, Le Méridien’s signature programme, delivers sweet frozen treats that savour the flavour of sweet summers.

Java+

Java+ at Le Méridien Ahmedabad is a warm, all-hours café perfect for leisurely coffee, light bites, or casual conversation. Its European-inspired vibe, quality Illy brews, and cosy setting make it a welcome retreat for guests seeking both comfort and coffee culture, all without leaving the hotel.

Drift 

The poolside cafe transitions from a tranquil retreat for intimate meet-ups or post post-swim snack. The non-alcoholic beverage menu is really interesting, and the presentation is even more adorable. 

Bayleaf 

Bayleaf is the Awadhi restaurant which pays homage to the rich culinary traditions of the North-west frontier. The menu is a thoughtful blend of signature tandoor-grilled delicacies and heirloom curries, echoing the opulence of royal kitchens.

We started with a refreshing mocktail and soon were served with appetisers – Channa Jor Poppers, Subz Goolar Kebab and Bayleaf Rajma Galouti. For mains, we devoured Awadhi Dhingri Dolma, Singhara Makhana Palak, Paneer Dum Anari and Dal Bayleaf served with a variety of breads. Ultimately crushed the meal with Kulfi Falooda and Chocolate peanut dessert.

Swimming Pool

The pool at Le Méridien Ahmedabad offers a peaceful and indulgent escape after a tiring day at work. Open till 10 pm, especially to cater to corporate guests, the pool invites guests to unwind while taking in the open skies and an open mocktail bar.

Spa

I found my perfect escape at Explore Spa, a sanctuary where everything is designed to help you rest, relax, and truly unwind. The treatments felt luxurious yet deeply grounding, each one crafted to bring harmony to both mind and body. What I loved most was how the menu draws from authentic local healing traditions — from soothing chakra balancing sessions to the deeply restorative abhyanga massage. It was more than just a spa visit; it felt like a journey back to balance.

HOW TO REACH LE MÉRIDIEN AHMEDABAD

The hotel is located approximately 18 km from Ahmedabad airport, 11km from Kalupur Railway Station and 32 km from Mahatma Mandir Convention Centre, Gandhinagar. The property can arrange pick-up and drop-off, or Uber is also easily available. 

Its proximity to stations, Prahladnagar Corporate Road, Gandhinagar via S G Highway, is excellent, making it the perfect choice for a stay.

FINAL THOUGHTS ABOUT LE MÉRIDIEN AHMEDABAD

Although I only visited the property and had a soulful dinner, I cannot wait to plan a staycation in my own city. 

During my conversation with multiple staff members, I felt that everyone carried a genuine smile at the property. The staff’s warmth and genuine conversations made every moment feel personal, while the cosy yet stylish ambience wrapped me in comfort — hospitality at its finest.

The property blends comfort with sophistication, serving food that beautifully celebrates both local flavours and global tastes.

Based on my visit, I highly recommend Le Méridien as one of the top choices for luxury stays in Ahmedabad.

Out of all the things to do in Kerala, catching mist in Wayanad is a fun and relaxing way to enjoy this North Kerala gem. 

Whether you are on a Kerala road trip or a food journey across the state, or especially coming to Wayanad just to chill in a resort, Wayanad is on the list of all travellers.

Having been to Kerala 4 times over the years, North Kerala was unvisited, and I wanted to change that this time around. Thanks to Kerala Travel Mart 2024, I could finally tick off North Kerala and Wayanad off my list.

And while there are many things to do in Wayanad, relaxing in an amazing property is also a worthy trip. And that is exactly what I did at Great Trails Wayanad by GRT Hotels. 

ABOUT GREAT TRAILS WAYANAD BY GRT HOTELS

GRT Hotels & Resorts is a hospitality chain in South India, part of the larger GRT group. While they have many hotels and resorts in many cities, they have amazing properties in most tourist destinations in South India. While their hospitality is their signature, they are actively involved in sustainability initiatives, promoting practices like no plastic.

Wayanad property had opened only a few months back, and thanks to their partnership with KTM 2024, bloggers were invited to review it. So here’s my honest review about spending 1 day and 1 night at this beautiful property in Wayanad.

GREAT TRAILS WAYANAD BY GRT HOTELS REVIEW

From the winding main road, our driver took a left turn uphill. The sides were surrounded by tall trees as mist clung to them. A few meters ahead, the bus came to a halt.

As we got down from the bus, which was a rather long journey, happy and warm smiles welcomed us to the property.

A traditional welcome with kumkum tilak and a Great Trails-themed hand band made us feel right at home. A cold towel and brisk check-in later, we settled in the common area where we were served a blue pea tea and Unniyappam (sweet rice flour and banana dumplings). 

As we let the view from the property sink in, the property’s general manager, Ms Anu Shinoj, greeted us and invited us for some traditional chai and pakoras. Over the chai, she briefed us about the property and invited us for a tour.

Rooms at Great Trails Wayanad by GRT

The hotel boasts 16 Estate Villas with Balcony, 16 Estate Villas with Verandah and 10 Estate Bungalows. All the villas have colonial-style sit-outs and sloping wooden ceilings, offering stunning views of lush coffee plantations and sweeping valleys.

Each villa is spacious and furnished with extra-large beds, a sofa and a working table. All the bedrooms and bathrooms are fully equipped with contemporary comforts, creating a richly layered, luxurious atmosphere that feels like a sophisticated retreat.

I stayed at the Villa with a Balcony and there were fresh fruits with cutlery and jars with cookies and dry fruits.  The room featured a plush king-sized bed, a smart TV, and a coffee machine—everything needed for a comfortable stay. 

Whether it was sinking into the inviting bathtub after a day exploring Wayanad or enjoying a restful nap on the incredibly soft bed, Great Trails Wayanad by GRT clearly understands how to turn a stay into something special.

Augusta Heights – The Restaurant

Augusta Heights, the restaurant at the hotel, serves up all sorts of Indian and International cuisine for all meals! There are enough vegetarian, non-vegetarian and vegan options for all guests. In case of any dietary requests, meals can be customised on request.

Augusta Heights doubles as a breakfast area in the morning for in-house guests. The hotel is located approximately 110 km from Kozhikode, which is the closest city with a railway station and an airport. From there, one must hire a private car to reach Wayanad. Great Trails Wayanad can arrange a pick-up from Kozhikode (110 km) or Kannur (104 km).

FINAL THOUGHTS ABOUT GREAT TRAILS WAYANAD BY GRT HOTELS

This was a short trip to Wayanad, and it was made extremely memorable and beautiful by the property.

My stay was truly relaxing and unforgettable, with every detail thoughtfully curated. The warm, welcoming staff were always happy to engage in a friendly conversation, and the cosy, stylish ambience made me feel instantly at home — a perfect example of exceptional hospitality.

The property strikes the perfect balance between comfort and sophistication, with delicious food that reflects the best of local and global cuisine. Even though my visit was short, the experience left a lasting impression. 

Based on my stay, I’d recommend Great Tails Wayanad as one of the top choices for luxury resorts in Wayanad. I would love to visit again for a longer duration.

Having spent a few nights in areas such as Gangnam and Hongdae, I was eager to check out the area and hotels in Myeongdong. 

Known as one of the most popular and tourist-friendly areas in Seoul, Myeongdong has everything tourists are looking for – shopping, skincare clinics, night market, food stalls and a lot more. It is one of the favourite areas to purchase souvenirs from South Korea.

Myeongdong is also easily connected with airport bus limousines, local buses and the subway, making it a very travel-friendly area to stay.

So when I decided to stay in Myeongdong, it was a no-brainer to choose an IHG property!

From the moment I arrived, the hotel’s stylish, modern aesthetic and the friendly, attentive staff left a strong first impression. 

The check-in was smooth and easy, and I was only asked for my passport. I was welcomed with Yakgwa (Korean honey cookies) and handed over the key to my room, promising the best views!

As soon as I got into the lift, I understood what the front desk meant by room with views – I was staying on the topmost floor. 

I entered the room and there stood the beautiful and tall Namsan tower (N-Seoul tower). The view from my room was indeed unparalleled and amazing.

Rooms at voco Seoul Myeongdong

The hotel boasts 576 guest rooms, including 30 suites, spread across 22 floors. Each room is thoughtfully sized, cozy, and features a sleek, modern design with clean architectural lines. Both the bedrooms and bathrooms are fully equipped with contemporary comforts, creating a richly layered, luxurious atmosphere that feels like a stylish retreat—perfect for design-conscious travelers looking to unwind.

My room was perched on the 22nd floor, offering a breathtaking view of the Seoul skyline, with the iconic Namsan Tower rising majestically in the distance.

Waiting in the room was a personalised welcome note alongside a delightful selection of traditional Korean snacks and sweets.

The room featured a plush king-sized bed, a smart TV, and a coffee machine—everything needed for a comfortable stay. HOW TO REACH VOCO SEOUL MYEONGDONG

The hotel is located approximately 60 km from Incheon International Airport (ICN), 18 km from Gimpo International Airport (GMP), 1 km from Seoul Station, and just a 3-minute walk (0.2 km) from Hoehyeon Station. Visitors can request airport pick-up for an extra charge. 

There is an airport bus limousine stop right opposite the hotel (literally crossing the road). This makes it easy to go to the airport without picking up heavy bags and down the subway.

Additionally, it features parking facilities for up to 130 vehicles, with a fee of KRW 11,000 per vehicle per night.

FINAL THOUGHTS ABOUT HOTELS IN SEOUL MYEOGDONG – VOCO

My stay at voco was at the end of a group trip to Korea. I needed some relaxing alone time before going back home, and I got exactly that.

 I had a truly relaxing and memorable stay at voco Seoul Myeongdong, where every detail felt thoughtfully taken care of. From the warm, friendly staff who were always ready for a quick chat, to the cozy, stylish atmosphere that made me feel right at home, it was hospitality at its finest.

Bandhavgarh National Park is a sought-after Tiger Reserve in the state of Madhya Pradesh in India. One of the most popular parks in the country, it has attracted naturalists, photographers, and international wildlife documentary filmmakers.

While tiger safari in Bandhavgarh is famous due to the highest density of Royal Bengal Tigers, it is equally a haven for other wildlife such as Indian bison, Sloth bears, Leopards, many types of deer and bird diversity.

Having been to other tiger reserves in Madhya Pradesh, such as – Kanha, Pench and Satpura – I was super excited for Bandhavgarh as it was my first time there.

WHY CHOOSE BANDHAVGARH?

Once the hunting grounds of the Maharaja of Rewa, it is now a significant sanctuary for wildlife. Bandhavgarh National Park is nestled in the Vindhya Hills of Madhya Pradesh, covering an area of over 1100 sq km. The park is divided in 3 core zones – Tala, Magadhi and Khitauli and 3 buffer zones – Dhamokhar, Johila and Panpatha. Each zone has a distinct landscape, offering a unique setting for wildlife.

The park’s diverse landscape features steep ridges, forested valleys, grassy swamps and open meadows, interspersed with the Bandhavgarh Fort, creating a stunning natural habitat.

It is also closer to various other tourist sights, such as the Bhedaghat and Khajuraho temples.

WHY CHOOSE PUGDUNDEE SAFARIS?

As important as choosing a good park for a jungle vacation in India is, choosing the right accommodation is also very crucial. Choosing resorts in Bandhavgarh can be overwhelming.

A wildlife safari lodge should have the following traits and that is why I chose King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh for the same:

• Near the park gate: oftentimes hotels/resorts are extremely far from the park gate and it becomes tiresome to travel even before entering the gate. King’s Lodge is located 4km away from Tala zone – a 10 minutes drive.
• Natural Ambiance: A hotel near wildlife parks should prioritize its interior, surroundings, and aesthetics to blend seamlessly with nature. A rustic design, minimalist lighting, and a peaceful atmosphere without loud music, enhances the experience.
• Local Cuisine: One of the highlights of any trip is experiencing regional flavors. King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh offers fresh, seasonal, and locally inspired dishes, with most of the ingredients grown and harvested fresh in their organic garden. They also serve morning tea before a safari and high tea afterward, adding to the overall comfort and authenticity of the safari experience.

KING’s LODGE BANDHAVGARH REVIEW

A long drive awaited after reaching Jabalpur airport. I was already dreading the city traffic, but almost immediately out of the airport, our driver, Izhar suggested if he could use a short-cut through a village to avoid the city roads. We were more than happy as he went to inform us that we would save 30 minutes of driving time!

The 3.5-hour drive was mostly smooth and made beautiful thanks to the blooming Palash flowers (Flame of the Forest). On crossing Umaria town, the Sal forests were visible on both sides – that meant we were close!

Glued to our window panes for any movement, we came across a herd of spotted deer. Aah, the feeling of being in the wilderness! The double-laned national highway then narrowed down to one lane, and the speed limit went down. We were even close!

We crossed the entry gates of all the core zones and later, a right turn brought us to the property. We were heartily welcomed by the staff at the lodge.

We were seated in the library with a projection room that doubles as a hi-tea room. Welcome drinks, along with a cold face towel, immediately made us feel at home. The lodge manager, Mr Yash requested a briefing session to explain about the property and even brought us gifts – refillable steel water bottles.

Here is all the information he shared and I came to know in the 3 days that I stayed.

Rooms at King’s Lodge Bandhavagarh

King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh features 18 spacious and well-appointed cottages that are designed keeping in mind the needs and comforts of the modern traveller. The cottages are in between a bamboo forest ensuring privacy and views to each unit. Cottages are lined with cow dung and hay – an ancient Indian practice for regulating interior temperatures. Since the temperatures can be extreme in Bandhavgarh, these practices ensure a comfortable temperature within the room.

Each unit of the beautifully designed cottage has a king-size bed, a contemporary ensuite bathroom and private viewing decks.

All rooms also have a tea and coffee maker with home-made cookies, areas to stow the luggage and a safety locker. Minimal yet rustic decor, beds with cozy mattresses, and ambient lighting add to the comfort and make you feel right at home. Lounge in the verandah of your cottage while getting engulfed in the sweet voices of countless birds.

Sustainability, Indian biodiversity and wildlife is reflected in every corner of the room and common spaces. The common areas have furniture using the local Sal trees and the door and handles have a wildlife element to them. The property wants the guests to enjoy the wilderness so much so that there is no TV and phone network in the rooms. However, there is wi-fi across the property that ensures you can share awesome wildlife pictures with your family and friends.

There is no in-room service and all meals are served in dedicated areas around the reception.

Being a sustainable property, drinking water is served in refillable steel bottles. The water is safe to consume as it is filtered RO water! The water is refilled several times a day and you will never have to request for it.

Culinary Delights

The menu is curated keeping the domestic and international guests in mind. The menu uses local ingredients from local vendors. The raw materials and ingredients used are sourced from local farmers and markets. And the food served gives an authentic taste of cuisine that is popular in the villages of Madhya Pradesh as well as global dishes.

King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh takes pride in not using and serving frozen food or spices. The executive chef will share the menu and ask for your preferred meal, especially for dinner. The meals are divided in 2 categories – Indian and Global, with enough options for vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.

Breakfast and lunch are served in the dining room, while dinner is an explicit affair at an outdoor sitting area. Cocktails and dinner are served in an open farmland where the chefs cook many live dishes on barbeque, and it is a perfect setting to meet other guests staying in the hotel and discuss the wildlife sightings of the day! There are bonfires lit in the area, ensuring you are warm while you sip your cold beer.

On many occasions a tribal dance is arranged here which is part of evening entertainment and also gives a slice of local culture. On one of the days that we were there, we watched the Baiga Tribe performing their festival dance, watched a cricket final match and on one  there was a wildlife documentary screening.

On-the-go safari Breakfast

Safari breakfasts are special. Imagine roughing it out in the cold wind for hours, trying to sight the big cats and then stopping in one of the jungle pit-stop areas where you are served hot beverages, samosas wrapped in Sal leaves, sandwiches, vegetable cutlets, fresh fruits, juice, cakes and other delicious snacks. It cannot get better than this!

King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh organizes breakfast on the go so that you are never hungry on a safari. The vehicles stop at jungle centre points that are designated breakfast points. The vehicle driver and guide set up a picnic basket and one can have a hearty meal amid the forest.

Beware of sparrows and monkeys who may try to snatch the yummy breakfast from your hands.

Swimming Pool

Near the reception of the property, there’s a small swimming pool where you can cool off after the game drive. King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh has a pool overlooking their organic garden and surrounded by greenery. Cool off and enjoy your holiday with a splash at the swimming pool. 

Library

If you have leisure time at hand then head to the in-house library that is ambient and beautifully styled with a number of books on wildlife and general reading. The library turns into a video room in the evening, where several documentary screenings take place.

Spa

After a long day out in the park, there is nothing more relaxing than a massage. Especially a full-day safari! Your body will thank you for the array of massages that are offered here  including ayurvedic massage, reflexology, Indian head massage and other range of full-body treatments.

Spa needs to be booked in advance so that the lodge can arrange the masseuse. 

Nature trail and Cycling tours

King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh arranges nature trail in and around the property with an expert naturalist. Since the property borders the Tala zone, there are birds to give you company. The walks are usually aimed at finding smaller things in the park like insects, butterflies, tracks and signs, birds, plants and other things that one would miss in a jeep. However, if luck is on your side, you might catch a glimpse of curious eyes peering back at you, belonging to one of the many hidden residents of the wild.

As the sun dips below the horizon, watch the forest prepare for a peaceful night’s rest. And as the moon rises over the clearing, carry home a heart full of memories—ones that will linger in your dreams long after you leave.

I suggest guests have atleast one free evening (parks are closed on Wednesday afternoon) to take up these walking tours.

Village Walks

You can experience the raw beauty of the surrounding village that borders the forests and listen to the tales of locals – how they have been living with the wildlife for centuries.

Immerse yourself in the lives of the local community, where many are skilled artisans. Share a meal or gain valuable insights from the indigenous tribes, such as the Baiga, who have lived in harmony with the forests for generations.

Sundowner

Who said one has to rough it out during a safari vacation? King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh ensures that you have a good time in between and after the safaris. Looking for an intimate dinner with your partner? Consider it done – with bush dinner and sundowner at exotic locales around the property. 

Sundowner is arranged near a pond where drinks and snacks await, overlooking the setting sun. However, in March 2025 when I visited, the activity was temporarily closed due to Sloth Bear movement in the area.

Tribal Dance

The property invites the community members of the local tribe, the Baiga, who entertain the guests with their festive dances and singing. This one hour of dance session is refreshing as you sip a local mahua cocktail while the bonfire warms you. 

Guests can join the dance and enjoy themselves with the tribe. 

Nature Shop

Take a bit of King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh with you with the souvenirs from nature shop. There are t-shirts, jackets, hats and caps that can be purchased. Other things include paintings and jewellery made by the Baiga tribe.

I picked some beautiful jewellery and my husband picked up a hat.

SUSTAINABILITY AT KING’S LODGE BANDHVAGRAH

The Pugdundee Safaris group is conscious of the environment and has inculcated many sustainable values in all of its hotels. Inspite of being in the jungle and away from many resources, the lodge practices sustainability! Some of the initiatives include the type of construction, no plastic policy, local employment, and others. Let us look at them in detail.

• The property has used sustainable materials throughout and has also added cod dung to the exterior to give a very rustic look. The dung along with hay cools the interiors – a practice from the Indian culture.
• The property has a strict no plastic waste policy. The guests are gifted stainless steel bottles upon check-in and encouraged to use them. There are RO water refilling stations in various areas, and the rooms also have steel bottles wherein the water gets refilled multiple times. 
• King’s Lodge, nestled in Rancha village, offers a captivating immersion into local rural life. Guests can visit the villages or the community members come to the property for dance performances, local cooking or selling jewellery.
• In common areas, instead of hand tissues, the lodge uses washable and reusable cotton napkins in the common bathroom.
• There is a solar panel at property that produces energy.
• The food is grown organically or purchased from a local vendor. Everything used in the kitchen is freshly prepared – they take pride in not serving frozen food, food that is exotic or non-seasonal. All of this makes the food taste amazing!

HOW TO REACH KING’S LODGE BANDHAVGARH

By flight

Bandhavgarh can easily be reached by air from all major cities in India including Delhi and Mumbai. Jabalpur is the closest airport to Bandhavgarh and is about a 4-hour road drive and flights from 4 cities operate here everyday – Indore, Bhopal, Mumbai and Delhi.

Khajuraho airport is 5 hours away and also a convenient airport specially when combining this beautiful temple town in your travels with Bandhavgarh.

By train

Umaria is the closest railway station (1 hour) followed by Katni (2 hours) and Jabalpur (4 hours), to reach King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh.

Katni is another major railway junction with trains coming from all parts of the country, including Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Kolkotta.

FINAL THOUGHTS ABOUT KING’S LODGE BANDHAVGARH REVIEW

During my stay at King’s Lodge, I enjoyed a perfect blend of wildlife, culture and relaxation. The hospitality and meticulous attention to detail stood out during my brief visit. Nestled amidst the lush forest, the lodge offered a much-required tranquil retreat where nature and comfort coexist. We woke up to the melody of birds, set out on exhilarating jungle safaris to spot majestic tigers, and unwound with breathtaking sunsets over the forest canopy. The staff, manager and naturalists of the lodge are lovely people and one can easily strike a conversation with them.. The warm hospitality guarantees my desire to return for another stay.

Known for its virgin beaches and beautiful homestays, Konkan is a paradise. Every Konkan beach offers something unique – either a forest, a fort or a hill around it. This unique ecosystem not only provides stunning views but also offbeat experiences.

The Konkan Coast is a 720 km long coastline in Western India that covers the coasts of Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. With villages and towns scattered across the entire coastline, every beach is a paradise of its own. Having visited Alibaug and Divegar, I was unsure what to expect from Sindhudurg.

Yes, Sindhudurg is offbeat, but not for the people of Maharashtra. It has been popular for its sea fortress known as Sindhudurg Fort. The tourists visiting this place are mostly locals who have grown up hearing tales of the valour of the legendary knight-king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Before visiting Sindhudurg, I was not aware of the many things to do in Sindhudurg, or that it had a tiny airport! But thanks to Coco Shambhala Sindhudurg, I was able to participate in many of the experiential tourism opportunities the resort has designed.

According to me, this is the perfect alternative to Goa, especially for those who prefer nature, peaceful walks, pristine waterfalls and tranquil beaches.

ABOUT COCO SHAMBHALA

Leisurely away from the touristy Goa, at a stone’s throw away from Bhogawe beach is Coco Shambhala. Its presence on the road is invisible – there is a door that opens to a few steps that lead to the four luxury villas that are a nod to a well-thought-out architecture and design as well as top-notch interior design.

This luxury resort is located 15 kilometres from the recently opened Sindhudurg Airport – and a drive through lush green landscape brings guests here. As Sindhudurg airport has limited flight landing, guests can into Mopa (North Goa) Airport and drive from there which is a 90-120 minute drive. 

COCO SHAMBHALA SINDHUDURG REVIEW

At the property, we were greeted with a refreshing lemon and curry-leaf drink. F&B Manager, Mr Suhas, who had already shared our day’s itinerary and food menu, welcomed us and briefed us about the next couple of hours. 

But, first things first. The best feature of the property is the villas and let’s go on a tour around it.

Rooms at Coco Shambhala Sindhudurg

There are only four luxury villas a Coco Shambhala Sindhudurg. I stayed at Villa Arka which has a living, dining and kitchenette space and is flanked by two bedrooms on either side.

The living area is open and has a private infinity pool while also offering stunning views of the Arabian Sea. There is no main door to the villa, and if you don’t want to be disturbed, there is a rope that you can fix at the entrance to indicate the same. A small bell also hangs outside which the staff always ring when they come to the living space. All the verdant, lush greenery around the villa firmly establishes privacy.

The rooms are well appointed with a comfortable bed, television, a large balcony, and a spacious bathroom. The rooms are spacious and designed with the needs and comforts of the modern traveller in mind. Each beautifully designed room unit has a king-size bed, a contemporary ensuite bathroom and large wardrobes. The block print furnishings in pastel hues merge with the tropical vibe, giving the room an easy, breezy feeling.

The kitchenette has a tea and coffee maker with homemade cookies. There’s a pantry with fresh milk, juice and cold beverages that are stored in the refrigerator. There are glasses to enjoy every type of alcohol as well as an ice box.

The food is brought from the central kitchen into the villa kitchenette and served at the dining table in the living area. After the meal is over, the staff clean the plates in the villa kitchen and place the dedicated racks.

Coco ensures that long-duration guests do not miss out on their work which is why each villa has high-speed wi-fi. Guests can work while enjoying the infinity pool as well as the ocean.

Being a sustainable property, drinking water is served in refillable glass bottles. The water is safe to consume as it is filtered RO water!

Konkani food for the win!

Coco Shambhala personalises menus for each guest, tailoring meals to individual tastes and using the freshest ingredients possible. The menu is shared before the guest arrives at the property and is customized to accommodate any requests.

We reached around lunch and Coco Shambhala arranged a Konkani cooking class. A cooking class was set up right in the villa. Chef Dilip Bavkar took us through the steps of preparing Tambdi Bhaji (red spinach) and Prawns in red curry. My otherwise kitchen-shy husband enjoyed cooking the meal. 

Soon enough it was time to have lunch. We were served a mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes catering both – me and husband’s preferences. 

Prawns in red curry, red spinach with grated coconut; black-eyed bean curry, and varan (lentils cooked in coconut and turmeric) served with Ragi bhakri (flatbread). On the side, we had Kothimbir vadi (coriander with gram flour) and Koshimbir (salads) and Papad/Pickles. The meal concluded with Firni, a delightful rice and milk pudding. 

Both of us being Maharashtrians found the taste on point and enjoyed the being close to home flavours.

The rest of the meals also had delightful flavours combining coconut, kokum and other Konkan-specific species. We thoroughly enjoyed all of our meals here.

Infinity Pool Villa

Each of the four villas in Coco Shambhala features a huge infinite pool overlooking the Arabian Sea and surrounded by greenery. It is the central feature of the villa and everything revolves around it. You can request drinks by the pool, play some songs and have a little party of your own!

Spa

Drawing from India’s ancient wellness traditions, the spa at Coco Shambhala offers personalized Ayurvedic treatments, including Abhyanga (full-body oil massage) and Shirodhara (a stream of warm oil poured on the forehead). 

There are also aromatherapy massages, body scrubs and beauty treatments to best utilize the vacation.

All treatments are carried out by trained professionals who ensure that every treatment is executed with precision and care.

EXPERIENTIAL TOURS AT COCO SHAMBHALA SINDHUDURG

Nivati Fort trek

While Sindhudurg is the highlight of the region, there is another fort in the vicinity that is forgotten. If visiting this in monsoon, Sindhudurg becomes inaccessible as boat rides are shut. Nivati Fort is a better option and is only visited by the locals.

Nivati Fort is believed to have been built during the reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and was strategically located to guard the coastline and protect the surrounding villages from invaders. While much of it lies in ruins, visitors can still explore remnants of the ancient walls, bastions, and gateways. 

The trek usually begins at Nivati village, a quaint settlement that exudes the charm of rural Konkan. The trail winds through lush greenery, coconut groves, and rocky paths, gradually leading up to the fort. The climb is gentle, with occasional steep sections, and can typically be completed within 1 to 1.5 hours.

The views from the top of the fort offer spectacular views of the Arabian Sea, with Nivati Beach on one side and Bhogwe Beach on the other. It is so beautiful that you wouldn’t want to leave the spot.

After the trek, it is best to climb down from this hillock onto the Bhogwe beach and walk back to the resort.  

Waterfall exploration

Being Konkan, the area is full of waterfalls – some big some small, some popular, some hidden. Thankfully the local guides in Coco know them all and depending upon the visitor’s adventure level for difficulty, you can pick a waterfall to visit.

Unfortunately, during my visit, the waterfall had a very high water force due to a recent spell of rain and it was not safe to visit, so we gave it a miss.

Boat ride on Karli River

Gliding along the tranquil backwaters of the Karli River is a serene way to uncover the hidden treasures of Sindhudurg and its surroundings. Visitors hop on a slow manual rowing boat and just tune in to the sounds of nature. The swift swaying of coconut trees in the wind, the cacophony of the kingfisher, the white-bellied eagles swirling in circles and the distant ringing of a temple bell.

The boat stopped near a coconut tree wherein our boatman disembarked, harvested 2 coconuts right out of a coconut tree, and presented to us for sipping fresh coconut water right on the boat. 

Walaval Lakshminarayan Temple

A 900-year-old temple dedicated to Lakshminarayan is tucked away in the small village of Walaval. With a wonderful sculpture, it is said that this temple has been renovated 3 times so far. The lake next to the temple and the beautiful natural environment there are captivating. In front of this temple, we can see 5 lamp pillars with beautiful stone construction.

This temple is designed in 3 stages – First is the main sanctum, then the main hall and then comes a grand assembly hall with seats on both sides. It is said that during the war, the idol was brought here from the village of Harmal, fearing the Portuguese. Here, you can see a palanquin that walks every Monday from Kartik Ekadashi to Mriga Nakshatra. On Kojagiri Pournima, oil lamps are lit on the Deepmala.

Chitrakathi Painting Workshop

Chitrakathi involves storytelling through art on a 12×15” or 12×18” canvas, which can take 1-3 days to complete, depending on the painting’s intricacy. Traditionally, these paintings depicted scenes from mythological epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata. But in modern paintings, birds, and mythological creatures are depicted. An artist – Mr Chetan Gangawane, can help you learn this traditional art form in less than an hour. It’s a great way to destress, learn the art and be creative.

Shadow puppet show

Shadow puppetry is an ancient form of storytelling and entertainment which uses flat articulated cut-out figures (shadow puppets) which are held between a source of light and a translucent screen or scrim. The cut-out shapes of the puppets sometimes include translucent colours or other types of detailing. Various effects can be achieved by moving both the puppets and the light source. A skilled puppeteer can make the figures appear to walk, dance, fight, nod and laugh. The show is conducted by master puppeteer – Mr Chetan Gangawane. 

SUSTAINABILITY AT COCO SHAMBHALA

Coco Shambhala is conscious of the environment and has inculcated many sustainable values. From the design to the filtration of the infinity pool, from sourcing fresh produce from locals to growing their microgreens, there are many other initiatives.

Some of the initiatives include the type of construction, no plastic policy, local employment, and others. Let us look at them in detail.

• Coco Shambhala Sindhudurg, nestled in Parole village, offers a captivating immersion into local rural life. Visiting the surrounding villages with tribal communities offers an enriching village excursion with fascinating encounters. 
• The architecture is done using local labour, recycled material and hand-made coconut wood to create this low-impact retreat. 
• The villas are designed as technically temporary structures, with the entire frame assembled using nuts and bolts instead of structural welding. Additionally, no roads were built to access the site, and no heavy machinery such as JCBs or cranes was used. The entire project was constructed manually to minimize environmental impact, ensuring the flexibility to dismantle the houses at any time without leaving a lasting footprint on the land.
• The property has solar panels that ensure uninterrupted green energy to the villas.
• The water bottles used are refillable glass bottles with filtered RO water.
•  Instead of hand tissues, the lodge uses washable and reusable cotton napkins in the common bathroom.

HOW TO REACH SINDHUDURG

By flight

Coco Shambhala can be reached via road from the airport or train station. The nearest airport is Mopa Airport, Goa as well as Sindhudurg Airport. The Mopa International Airport in Goa is the nearest airport (85 km) connecting to Sindhudurg. This airport has better connectivity with other cities as compared to Sindhudurg Airport.

By train

Sindhudurg has its railway station and is well connected by train. Kanakvalli, Kudal, and Sawanwadi are major railway stations in Sindhudurg district. These railway stations are about 25- 35 km away from the destination. The railway station in Sindhudurg is well-connected to major cities like Goa, Pune, Mumbai, Mangalore and Ahmedabad.

By road

The National Highway-17 passes through Sindhudurg. The buses are available from Mumbai or other cities in Maharashtra. You may also board a bus or rent a car from Goa or Mangalore.

The Maharashtra state government ( MSRTC) buses running from Pune, Mumbai, Sangli, Kolhapur, Ratnagiri, and Goa state government buses (Kadamba Transport Corporation) that run from Madgaon, Panaji, Vasco and Pernem to Sindhudurg are easy transports available that connect to Sindhudurg Fort.

FINAL THOUGHTS ABOUT COCO SHAMBHALA SINDHUDURG REVIEW

I had a relaxing time at Coco Shambhala and especially loved the hospitality and attention to detail. The property is extremely beautiful, and cosy, and has delicious food. The staff is friendly and one can easily pick up a conversation with them. The warm hospitality guarantees my desire to return for another stay.

Bori Wildlife Sanctuary is not very popular as compared to other tiger parks in Madhya Pradesh – Kanha, Pench and Bandhavgarh. However, little do people know that Bori is a part of Satpura National Park. 

Satpura National Park is famous for its sloth bear sightings, but it is equally a haven for tigers, types of deer and bird diversity. It is also a perfect wildlife resort near Bhopal even if one does not 

As important it is to choose a good park for jungle vacation in India, choosing the right accommodation also is. A wildlife safari lodge should have the following traits and I chose Bori Safari Lodge for the same.

• Near the park gate: oftentimes hotels/resorts are extremely far from park gate and it becomes tiresome to travel even before entering the gate.

• Natural vibe: The interior, surroundings and aesthetics are extremely important for a hotel near wildlife parks. It should maintain rustic vibes, have minimalist lighting and should not allow loud music.

• Local food: the best part about travelling is the food and hotels should serve local food that is fresh in season and distinctive of the place. Serving morning tea before safari and high-tea after safari is part of the whole comfortable safari experience.

• In-house naturalist: Having a knowledgeable and experienced naturalist is an added advantage on safari who can give an overview about the entire forest biodiversity including animals, plants and birds. They are also expert trackers and guides who know the forest as well as the back of their hand.

ABOUT BORI SAFARI LODGE

BORI SAFARI LODGE REVIEW

After turning left from the Bhopal-Nagpur highway, we drove through the dusty village roads for sometime. Another left turn and we entered the lodge premises with happy faces waving to us. We were heartily welcomed by literally every staff at the lodge.

Welcome drinks along with a cold face towel immediately made us feel at home. The lodge manager Mr Shivraj Singh requested a briefing session to explain about the property.

Here is all the information he shared and I came to know in the 2 days that I stayed.

Rooms at Bori Safari Lodge

Bori Safari Lodge features 8 spacious and well-appointed rooms that are designed keeping in mind the needs and comforts of the modern traveller. Each unit of the beautifully designed rooms has a king size bed, contemporary ensuite bathroom and private viewing decks. There is a sitting/reading lounge area where one can keep their cameras, binoculars and other wildlife gears or simply read.

All rooms also have a tea and coffee maker with home-made cookies, wardrobes and safety locker. Artful decor, beds with cozy mattresses, modern furniture, and ambient lighting add to your comfort. Sit back and enjoy the serene ambience of the farmlands from the private deck of the room!

Indian artistic heritage is reflected in every corner of the room, starting with complimentary Kama Ayurveda amenities, wildlife photos/portraits/books and local art. The property wants the guests to enjoy the wilderness so much so that there is no TV or wi-fi or telephones in rooms. However there is a common area around the reception that has wi-fi connectivity if you are working outside of the office.

There is no in-room service and in case you need to call the staff there is a blow horn that one has to blow into and keep outside the room. Blow really hard so that they can hear it.

In addition to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the farms, one can have the feeling of sleeping under the sky due to a small glass portion between the wall and ceiling. Although not a good option for a night full of lightning and thunderstorms! 

Being a sustainable property, drinking water is served in refillable steel bottles. The water is safe to consume as it is filtered RO water!

Culinary Delights

There is an in-house multi-cuisine restaurant, where all the meals are served. Embedded in the central courtyard of the lodge, this restaurant has beautiful indoor and outdoor dining spaces. 

They have a fixed menu for each meal and the food is served on the table. The raw materials and ingredients used are sourced from local farmers and markets. And the food served gives an authentic taste of cuisine that is popular in the villages of Madhya Pradesh as well as global dishes.

Cocktails and dinner is served in an open farmland where the chefs cook many live dishes on barbeque and it is a perfect setting to meet other guests staying in the hotel and discuss about the wildlife sightings of the day!

On-the-go safari Breakfast

Safari breakfasts are special. Imagine roughing it out in the cold wind for hours trying to sight the big cats and then stopping in one of the jungle pit-stop areas where you are served hot beverages, parathas, bread-butter, fresh fruits, juice, cakes and other delicious snacks? It cannot get better than this!

Bori Safari Lodge organizes breakfast on the go so that you are never hungry on a safari. The vehicles stop at rest stops that are designated breakfast points. The vehicle driver and guide sets up a picnic basket and one can have a hearty meal in the midst of the forest.

Beware of sparrows and monkeys who may try to snatch the yummy breakfast from your hands.

Infinity Pool 

Bori Safari Lodge features an infinite pool overlooking a pond surrounded by greenery. Cool off and enjoy your holiday with a splash at the swimming pool. Enjoy a refreshing swim, laze in the sunbeds or have a memorable time with your family and children at the pool. 

Library

If you have leisure time at hand then head to  the in-house library that is ambient and beautifully styled with a number of books on wildlife and general reading. This is also the only place where wi-fi works in the entire resort so if you have some work to do this is the place to be.

Spa 

After a long day out in the park, there is nothing more relaxing than a massage. Especially a full day safari! Your body will thank you for the array of massages that are offered here  including ayurvedic massage, reflexology, Indian head massage and other range of full-body treatments. 

The lodge employs local ladies who are well trained in massage therapy to deliver these experiences to guests. 

Walking tours

The Bori Wildlife Sanctuary along with Satpura National Park are the only two protected areas in Central India where walking is permitted as a means to explore the park. A guided walking safari with the expert naturalist is an experience of a lifetime where one may stumble upon many kinds of biodiversity and tales that may last a long time. The walks are usually aimed at finding smaller things in the park like insects, butterflies, tracks and signs, birds, plants and other things that one would miss in a jeep.

I suggest guests have atleast one free evening (parks are closed on wednesday afternoon) to take up these walking tours.

Sundowner

The exploration doesn’t stop after wildlife chasing as you once again hop into the open-top jeep where the team guides you to a secluded riverbed along the Tawa River. Here  a delightful high tea and sundowners await. During certain months, the river’s flow recedes significantly, revealing picturesque sandy banks where you’ll pause. In the spring months a local flower called Mahua blooms which is the region’s favorite. 

While it is popular for country liquor, the Bori Safari Lodge has made a special concoction using the Mahua flowers called Mahua Martini on the sandy riverfront while witnessing the sunset over the national park.

SUSTAINABILITY AT BORI SAFARI LODGE

The Jehan Numa group is conscious of the environment and has inculcated many sustainable values in all of its hotels. Inspite of being in the jungle and away from many resources, Bori Lodge practices sustainability! Some of the initiatives include the type of construction, no plastic policy, local employment, and others. Let us look at them in detail.

• Bori Safari Lodge, nestled in Dhapada village, offers a captivating immersion into local rural life. Visiting the surrounding villages with tribal communities offers an enriching village excursion with fascinating encounters. Numerous opportunities await guests to intimately experience village life during their stay.
• The water bottles used are refillable steel bottled with filtered RO water.

HOW TO REACH BORI SAFARI LODGE

By flight

Bori Safari Lodge can be reached via road from the airport or train station.

The nearest airport is Bhopal airport located at 145 km and another is Nagpur Airport located 235 km from the resort near Bori Wildlife Sanctuary. From both these airports, you can reach the lodge via cabs or buses.

By train

The Betul Railway station is the closest to Bori Safari Lodge. The station acts as a junction for 94 trains that connect to various parts of the country like Mumbai, Bhopal, Nagpur, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bangalore. It is 37.8 km from the resort near Bori Wildlife Sanctuary. 

FINAL THOUGHTS ABOUT BORI SAFARI LODGE REVIEW

During my stay at Bori Lodge, I enjoyed a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. The hospitality and meticulous attention to detail stood out during my brief visit. The resort exudes beauty, comfort, and coziness, complemented by delectable cuisine. In my opinion, Bori Safari Lodge ranks among the top luxury jungle resorts in India, thanks to its exceptional offerings. The staff, manager and naturalists of the lodge are lovely people and one can easily strike a conversation with them.. The warm hospitality guarantees my desire to return for another stay.

Bangkok unveiled its grandeur as soon as I hopped in a taxi from the airport, traversing through the bustling city, until I reached the heart of the city. With embassies and parks around, this area exuded a certain charm and irresistible natural allure that captivated me.

A sense of warmth engulfed me as I walked in the door after being greeted with ‘Sawasdee’. I was way earlier than the check-in time and being a busy week in Bangkok with many events, concerts and conferences lined up, the hotel was full. 

I was directed towards the waiting area which has complimentary cookies, coffee and tea choices. I decided to take a walk around the hotel premises and get to know the hotel better while waiting for the room key.

ABOUT KIMPTON MAA-LAI BANGKOK HOTEL

Surrounded by lush greenery and vibrant modernity, Kimpton Maa-Lai rests on the leafy-green Langsuan Road near the Lumpini Park. While this area is dotted with numerous luxurious establishments, Kimpton Maa-Lai surpasses them all and boasts of being in the centre of all the social happenings 24×7.

Standing tall in the sky, this property spans across 11 landscaped acres, infusing elements of SouthEast-Asian culture. Here, the essence and sophistication of InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) truly comes alive, with thoughtful amenities, playful design and a sincere personal touch.

MAA-LAI stems from the age-old Thai philosophy “lamiat”, which says that life should be approached as a work of art. Taking the philosophy very seriously, the staff at the hotel continuously craft and refine the details in the pursuit of perfection in each department. 

KIMPTON MAA-LAI BANGKOK REVIEW

After waiting for a couple of hours, I was greeted by Ms Tawan Moody, Assistant Marketing Communications Manager at Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok. I went on a guided tour with her around the hotel to check out the various restaurants, library, gym and infinity pool. At the end of the guided tour, I was given my room key. So let me start with that first.

Rooms at Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok

Ms Tawan informed me that there are a total of 362 Accommodation Rooms in this 40-floor building that include rooms, suites and service residences. The rooms use organic materials and traditional Thai artisanship, giving the hotel a modern, linear architecture. The bedrooms and bathrooms that have been fully appointed with modern creature comforts, the richly layered spaces offer a luxurious, cocoon-like vibe, beckoning a savvy, design-minded crowd to settle in and stay a while.

Asian artistic heritage is reflected in every corner, starting with complimentary HARNN amenities and local art. From triple-glazed windows to rid all noises and VIFA Nordic sound system to intelligent, newly gilded Dyson hair dryers glammed up in all suites and anti-fog bathroom mirrors, the hotel blurs the line between hotel and urban Eden.

I entered my room located on the 23rd floor and the view of Bangkok skyline from my room made me gasp! A welcome note with complimentary bite-sized Thai Luk Chup (Mung Bean Dessert) in the shape of vegetables, an edible chocolate tuk-tuk and few other Thai sweets welcomed me into my room.

A twin bed with all modern amenities including a smart TV, a stereo, a stacked mini-bar that included alcoholic drinks, and a coffee machine were in the room.

In addition to the floor-to-ceiling windows with automatic drapes, the room’s reading corner has options to read books or simply lounge there in awe with the skyline to allow guests to unwind. 

From the plush bathtubs to soak in after a long day out in Bangkok city, or the uber comfortable beds to nap, Kimpton Maa-Lai sure knows how to make guests’ stay a memorable one.

Oh, and drinking water was served in glass bottles. Talk about taking on sustainability!

Kimpton Maa Lai Bangkok Cafe

First of the first food option in Maa-Lai, right after passing the entrance lobby, is CRAFT Cafe. The first thing I noticed here was the pets lounging around in the cafe with their human parents. The friendly vibe with soothing music sure made its presence felt.

CRAFT cafe is open throughout the day and night and serves handcrafted coffee, curates creative cocktails, finger foods and serves craft beers in a garden patio space. The cafe is the designated pitstop to pick up a snack, to linger for a chat or to sit down for a nightcap with healthy, vegan and vegetarian options. 

I promised myself to come back here after the guided tour was over. Afterall having Thai Tea in Bangkok is a ritual I must stick to.

Kimpton Maa Lai Bangkok Restaurant

Ms.Jigger is an Italian Restaurant in Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok that serves artisanal pizzas, pasta and bite-sized Italian cicchetti – fiery meatballs, carpaccio with truffle oil, and crackling artichoke hearts – alongside a globe-trotting menu of heady drinks. 

Timeless and tasteful, one gets to choose their preferred poison, from small-batch spirits and bespoke wines to handcrafted cocktails. If you prefer an outdoor terrace setting, then the drinks and food will be served there.

Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok Rooftop Bar

Popular even amongst the locals, Bar.Yard is a rooftop bar located on the 40th floor that serves some amazing cocktails, mocktails, finger foods with a side of Bangkok Skyline views.

Perched above the city and set against the serene backdrop of Lumphini Park, the award winning Bar.Yard provides a visual and auditory spectacle. The cocktails and mocktails at Bar.Yard are not simply mixed; they are meticulously crafted. 

With a menu of specials, there is a range of Thai and international craft beers on the beverage menu. As I sip on the newly introduced Chinese craft gin called the Peddlers, I hear about the culinary journey that takes the seasonal farm-to-plate route and dishes out slow food.

The menu here features two weekly specials – Taco Tuesdays and Paella Sundays, as well as a special vegetarian section.

Whether it’s a weeknight or the weekend, Bar.Yard gives you all the right reasons to stay out late. The taste of the summer flows through the ambiance as well as island spirits, classic cocktails and some serious music. With a crew of creative DJs spinning fresh, daily mixes and something always on, Bar.Yard is designed for good times.

All-inclusive Breakfast at Kimpton Maa-Lai

Maa-Lai offers a buffet option as part of the accommodation at Stock.Room.

The menu is a combination of Thai cuisine (comprising veg curries and different types of meat) as well as international cuisine such as continental, Arabic, Mexican and Indian to cater to all types of guests. A selection of fresh tropical fruits, nuts and smoothies makes their presence felt. A vegetarian or vegan can happily eat here without worrying about their food preferences.

There is a live egg station where you can order the eggs you want. As well as fresh bread and a dessert counter with divinely fragrant croissants, fruit danish and cakes.

Stock.Room as the name suggests, is also the in-hotel gourmet grocerant where visitors can shop for groceries, see it cooked and savour it post breakfast hours. The casual, cosy space boasts at least six pop-up food stalls, serving up sophisticated street eats and whatnot, from crazy cheeses and freshest seafood to made-to-order pasta. Visitors can even try their hand at making Pad Thai under the watchful eye of the chef.

Infinity Pool at Maa-Lai, Bangkok

I cannot write a Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok review without the mention of its infinity pool.

Located on the third floor, the outdoor infinity pool is nestled in the hotel’s secret garden. This little urban oasis is adorned with lush local flora and potted plants, where visitors can take a quick refreshing dip, curl up on the sun lounger, read a book, or put on your headphones and enjoy your favourite playlist.

The Bangkok skyline from the pool is pretty great too, and makes the soaking special!

Gym

Maa-Lai doesn’t want its visitors to slack off just because they are on vacation. With all gym equipment and an in-house gym instructor, embrace that fit body while in the hotel.  Sculpt your body whenever you want when you stay at Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok. 

There is a fitness instructor who acts as the bodybuilder and nutritionist, while the Yoga Master practises zen stretches and Fitness Instructor teaches Thai boxing and any sport you have in mind. 

Yoga timings are fixed and are generally in early morning or evening. You can reserve your spot by requesting the reception or concierge desk.

Amaranth spa 

The spa focuses on harnessing the energy flow by using organic ingredients, designed to indulge and revive. Like the enchanting amaranth flower and energy stone, the hotel spa in Bangkok offers the residents an array of healing therapies that fuses ancient Oriental wisdom with modern cosmetic techniques, including muscle-soothing massages, refreshing facials and Amaranth-scented rituals.

The best part is, hotel residents can book a spa in their room if you feel uncomfortable in public premises.

Maa-Lai Library 

Served on the 30th floor at the Maa-Lai Library, the “Afternoon Tea at the Library” is the highest elevation afternoon tea served in town, crowned by a panoramic view of the lush Langsuan greenery surrounds. 

Maa-Lai Library is inspired by the concept of a cosy library corner in a private home. A place where imagination is set aflutter, this contemporary cocoon is bathed in the afternoon sun’s rays, as the ideal venue for lounging, reading and enjoying light refreshments. 

The elevated, relaxing space has its own spacious terrace to enjoy the weather and the unobstructed vantage points so you can watch life happen. 

There is a complimentary high tea here at 4pm!

SUSTAINABILITY AT KIMPTON-MAA-LAI

Environmentally friendly procurement

• The majority of chemical supplies are biodegradable and environmentally friendly.
• Biodegradable straws are used in hotels and cafes.
• Biodegradable tissue papers in employee and guest bathrooms.
• Choosing to install showers, faucets, toilets and urinals that use water economically or have a sensor system for both the hotel’s guests and staff.

Environmental and Energy Management

• Activity to promote water saving by not changing towels every day in guest rooms to help reduce the hotel’s water consumption.
• Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – Silver Award (LEED)
• Rental bikes and electric scooters are available for customers in front of the lobby to promote wellness and lessen energy consumption.
• 41% of the hotel area is green garden oasis. Different tree species have been planted in the garden oasis, which creates a tranquil atmosphere and offers enough shade for CRAFT, one of the hotel restaurant, outdoor terrace.

HOW TO REACH KIMPTON MAA-LAI BANGKOK

Situated in the heart of the Langsuan area and nestled beside Lumphini Park, the crown jewel of the city’s green spaces, Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok is 40 km from Suvarnabhumi International Airport and 24 km from Don Muang International Airport.

Visitors can request airport pick-up for an extra charge. Or if your prefer MRT or other public transportation, these are the options:

From Don Muang Airport

Option 1: Bus

Take the A3 bus from exit no. 6 and ride 45 minutes to Ratchadamri BTS station. Take a cab from there to the hotel, which is 1.5 km. If you have less luggage, and prefer to walk it is an easy 10 minutes walk. Cost – 50 baht.

Option 2: Taxi

Hail an app-based taxi – Grab/Bolt. Download the app before travelling and enter the destination. The taxi takes about 40-50 minutes, depending on traffic. Cost – 450 baht. Book your Private Airport Transfers.

From Suvarnabhumi Airport

Option 1: Train

Airport Rail Link operates a train from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Ratchaprarop station every 15 minutes. Train takes only 25-30 minutes to reach Ratchaprarop. From Ratchaprarop station, Maa-Lai is 10 minutes away by taxi. Total cost 40 baht (train) + 70 baht (taxi).

Option 2: Shuttle Public Van

There are shuttle public vans that operate between the Suvarnabhumi airport to Victory Monument near Ratchaprarop station. From the Victory monument, one can ride a taxi to Maa-Lai. Total cost 100 baht (public van) + 70 baht (taxi).

Option 3: Taxi

Hail an app-based taxi – Grab/Bolt. Download the app before travelling and enter the destination. The taxi takes about 40-50 minutes depending on traffic. Cost – 650 baht.

FINAL THOUGHTS ABOUT KIMPTON MAA-LAI BANGKOK REVIEW

I had a relaxing time at Kimpton Maa-Lai and especially loved the hospitality, attention to detail, and the short visit I was there. The resort is extremely beautiful, cosy, and comfortable, with delicious food. Based on my experience, I would say that Kimpton Maa-Lai is one of the best luxury Bangkok hotels in the city. The staff is friendly, and one can easily pick up a conversation with them. The warm hospitality is a warrant that I would love to come back and stay here.

In spite of living in Gujarat all my life and having visited Bhuj many times, I was yet to explore Rann Utsav. Thanks to the All India Influencer’s Meet organized by Gujarat Tourism in association with the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, I was able to experience Rann Utsav in Kutch.

In this blog, I have tried to cover all aspects of Rann Utsav at Tent City such as Kutch festival, Rann Utsav packages, how to reach, activities, experiences, day trips and food.

What is Rann Utsav in Kutch?

Simply put, Rann in the local language Gujarati means Desert and Utsav means festival. All Indian travellers are well versed in Bollywood Superstar Amitabh Bachchan’s advertisement and the tagline ‘Kutch nahi dekha to kuch nahi dekha’. Kutch is a district located in the state of Gujarat and is the largest district in India. It also hosts Rann Utsav, probably the longest festival. 

What is the Rann Utsav Tent City?

The Tent City is a huge expanse of a makeshift city that participates in the Rann Utsav. Tent City is located at Dhordo. As the name suggests, the tent city Dhordo is like a city in itself and is spread over 5,00,000 sq. mt. There are 450 tents under various categories to suit the budget of all travellers.

A guide to Rann Utsav in Kutch at Tent City

After a long 300km ride from Little Rann of Kutch, I and the other participants from the Influencer’s meet made it to Great Rann of Kutch. I could the festive atmosphere from my bus window as there were colourful shops dotting the highway and lots of activity around. The bus stopped at the gate of Rann Utsav Tent city at 9 pm!

Warm welcome at Rann Utsav Reception

As I walked from the gate to the reception, I saw many Kutch craft shops and I promised myself to check them out first thing in the morning.

With a plate full of flowers and diyas, we received a warm welcome at the reception. After putting tilak on our foreheads, we were allotted our tents. Our bags directly reached our allotted tents even before we could.

Golf carts were waiting outside the reception and we were dropped off at our assigned cluster. Tent city Rann Utsav has 9 clusters, each cluster having 50 tents. The cluster manager welcomed us again and gave a small demonstration of using a fire extinguisher in case of fire. Fire extinguishers are placed outside every tent in Rann Utsav at Tent city.

I crossed the sit-out of the tent and I was welcomed into an actual room-like-looking tent. As I entered my premium tent, I saw a small potli having a sanitiser and mask placed on the king-sized bed. A working table and chair, dressing mirror and sofa chairs ensured there is enough space in the tent. An attached bathroom with 24 hours running water ensured there is comfort at all times.

Spread over 1600 sq. feet, Darbari Suite at Tent City Dhordo has 2 bedrooms with king-sized beds, a private dining area, a mini-bar and a camp-fire area. It also offers express check-in and exclusive transfers.

Deluxe AC Swiss Cottages

Spread over 387 sq feet, Deluxe AC Swiss Cottages are similar to Premium tents but do not have a front porch. They have comfortable twin beds.

Day 1: Arrival, Check-in, Sunset at White Rann, Cultural Event

Pick-up

Visitors are picked up from the airport/railway/bus station as per the pre-decided slots. Air-conditioned buses will transfer you to the Tent City.

After a smooth check-in and settling into the tents, it is time to head to the dining area for lunch. Golf carts are available for internal transportation. 

Sunset in the White Rann

5 km away from Tent city Rann Utsav is the white rann. Visitors will leave for the sunset at 4:30 pm. Buses will drop visitors at a particular point. From there, one can walk or ride a camel cart to reach the white salt pans. Spend the next one hour in awe and drown in the white expanse.

Visit Shyamji Krishna Memorial

Special attention has been given to sustainability and responsible tourism at Rann Utsav Tent City. 

Sustainable housing

Rann Utsav uses temporary tents that are dismantled and put up every year. Concrete structures were not used as they could have disrupted the local and sensitive ecology. 80% of housing is temporary and stored in godown to be used next year.

Sustainable transport

The entire area uses Battery operated vehicles for the transfer of visitors and baggage. This helps in the reduction of air pollution in the area.

Sewage treatment

Due to the temporary nature of the festival, soak pits are made for sewage collection. The vehicle is pushed into action every day which collect sewage through motors and are taken to a nearby industry. The sewage is treated in the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP).

Food waste treatment

Due to a large footfall of visitors and over 400 staff in Tent city, food waste is generated in large amounts. Food waste (from cut vegetables and leftover food) is processed in the organic waste converter and converted into manure.

Plastic waste recycling

All the water bottles are collected from tents and sent to an organization that recycles them.

Best time to visit Rann Utsav

The White Rann is at its absolute best during the full moon night. It is said that the salt sparks up like diamonds. Rann Utsav kite festival is also special as colourful kites fly high in the sky against the white background.

How to Reach Rann Utsav at Tent City

Rann Utsav provides bus services for pick and drops from and to Bhuj railway station/bus stand and airport. 

By Road

It is possible to visit Rann Utsav at Tent city by personal car or group bus. One can hire a car from Bhuj and drive 80km to reach Hodko. Ahmedabad to Rann Utsav distance is 413km by road and it takes over 9 hours to reach. Rann Utsav is a perfect weekend destination from Ahmedabad. There are many direct trains between Mumbai and Bhuj

By Train

The train is one of the best travel modes to Bhuj. There are many direct trains between Mumbai and Bhuj and Delhi Bhuj. From Bhuj, one can hire a car or opt for the Rann Utsav Tent city bus.

By Flight

Bhuj is the nearest airport to the Rann of Kutch. From the Bhuj, visitors can hire a taxi to reach the Great Rann of Kutch. There are many flights from Mumbai to Bhuj.

Is Rann Utsav worth visiting?

YES! Rann Utsav at tent city is once in a lifetime experience and I feel it should be done in a luxurious way. The never-ending expanse of the white desert of Rann of Kutch is a perfect holiday destination. Some of the reasons why I feel Rann Utsav is worth visiting are:

• The itinerary is planned perfectly right from pick up from the airport to the drop.
• There are many things to do in the tent city itself.
• The food is delicious with so much variety.
• The day trip options are great.
• The staff is super courteous.
• The experience of living in luxurious tents is amazing.

What did I not like about my experience at Rann Utsav?

Plastic water bottles are being used in rooms. Water refilling stations are a necessity with the kind of footfall the festival gets. I feel that reusable water bottles with the Rann Utsav logo cold be given as welcome souvenirs and encourage visitors to use water refilling stations at dedicated areas.

There is a morning tea call at 6 am sharp that tends to wake everyone up. That is really not necessary. The tea could be left at the cluster manager table and visitors can get the tea from there.

• Packages are cheaper in November and February.
• If you are travelling between December to February, you can go for Non-AC Swiss tents as nights are super chilly.
• Golf carts are available for internal transportation but sometimes the waiting time in more. So be patient or walk on foot. But one has to walk a lot in the tent cluster and other areas.
• Wear comfortable footwear as one has to walk a lot.
• Wheelchairs are available at reception.
• There are mosquitoes in the tent city so carry a spray.
• Rann Utsav at Tent city procures official permission for entering the White Desert on your behalf. If you go by yourself, one has to get permission.

• The festival takes place in an eco-sensitive zone so please respect the environment. Do not litter in the tent city or white rann.

Visitors to Rajasthan most certainly visit popular tourist destinations such as Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Udaipur. Sometimes they also visit little offbeat destinations such as Bundi but Dungarpur is not really on the radar of tourists.

Even tourists from Gujarat make quick visits to Mount Abu which is 4.5 hours away from Ahmedabad but Dungarpur which is 3 hours away is not considered. It is time to make small weekends count by taking a luxury staycation near Ahmedabad. 

There are many places to visit in Dungarpur, the erstwhile princely state, which can truly make this staycation a great holiday. Being an offbeat destination, one can choose to stay in Udai Bilas Palace, a heritage property situated on the banks of a lake overlooking the beautiful landscape.

HOW TO REACH DUNGARPUR

Located 120 km from Udaipur and 174 km from Ahmedabad, Dungarpur is connected via trains and roads.

By Road

Dungarpur is situated 20 km away from the NH8, which is why it is very well connected to the North and Western states of India. It is connected to all major towns and cities in Rajasthan via Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) buses as well as Gujarat and MP state-run buses.

By Train

Dungarpur has a train station and there is a train every day between Udaipur and Ahmedabad that connects Dungarpur. From the station, the town is 3 km away.

By Flight

The closest airport is Maharana Pratap Airport in Udaipur which is 120 km away and has good domestic traffic. However, for international travelers, Ahmedabad Airport is better. From the airport, a private taxi can be hired to Dungarpur. Udai Bilas also offers travel assistance and can book a car for visitors.

Nestled on the banks of Gaib Sagar Lake, this luxurious property is a treasure trove of architectural corners and vintage appeal.

Here are all the details about my stay in Dungarpur, Rajasthan.

Booking and Check-in

We stayed at Udai Bilas Dungarpur over the Christmas weekend of 2022 and booked the property over call and got the confirmation over email.

We reached around the check-in time at 1 pm. Mr. Kalvendra Singh ji, the property manager was patiently waiting for us at the gate and with his warm smile welcomed us to the property. We were shown our suite and I was totally bowled over with details!

Rooms and Suite at Udai Bilas Palace Dungarpur

From the parking, we climb 3 steps to reach a huge garden lined with big trees. The rustling of leaves in the winter breeze is the only sound I hear. On one side is a mini bird zoo and on the other, a part of the palace converted into a hotel. There are a total of 22 rooms.

Suite Room

We climb 4 more steps to reach our suite. A huge room with 2 queen size beds and a family seating area welcomes us in a tastefully done room. The wallpaper, the wooden wardrobe, the study area, and the wooden chest are fine examples of exemplary aesthetics. The carpets try to keep the room warm from the cold wind blowing through windows.

As I walk to the bathroom, I notice more antiques that make one feel you are in no ordinary palace. The bathroom has all the modern amenities and still leaves a mark of heritage. 

As I close the windows and blind shades to protect me from the cold, I am drawn to another curtain that doesn’t seem to have a window behind it. It in fact opens into another small room. Another fantastic wallpaper, I whisper to myself thinking how the grand suites would be.

Standard Room

There are six standard rooms in the property that offer a peep into the royal lifestyle. Adorned with vintage upholstery and antique furniture, the rooms offer a chance to know the heritage.

Art Deco Suite

This suite has heavy influences from Europe. In this suite, the modern amenities merge seamlessly with antique furnishings to provide comfort to the well-traveled visitor. It opens to an even bigger study area and then a sit-out overlooking the in-house ‘One Pillared Palace’.

The Art Deco Suite has a lovely view of the Gaib Sagar Lake from the window on the other side.

Maharawal Suite

When rich heritage gets a touch of artistic restoration it is indeed a connoisseur’s paradise. The Maharawal Suite displays the very best of antiquities and vintage upholstery from the bygone era and even has ornate balustraded balconies, friezes, and arches. The mirror work is exemplary and nothing like I have seen anywhere. A window opens to the glimpse of the marble temple – Vijay Rajrajeshwer Temple. On the other side of the room, the window opens to the ‘One Pillared Palace’.

As I breathe in this royalty, I walk to the big study area with plush comfortable sofa chairs. 

Parallel to the study is a passage room to the bathroom with a floor seating area. The highlight of this room is that the ceiling and flooring are full of mirrors.

Food at Udai Bilas Dungarpur

Udai Bilas Dungarpur offers a Buffet option for the meals. Since guests mostly spend their days on the property or traveling to nearby places it is best to go for a full board plan (breakfast + lunch + dinner buffet). 

The meals are a divine gastronomic blend of homemade Rajasthani cuisine. Quality ingredients are picked, fresh vegetables are harvested from the in-house organic garden, and comfort food is served at picturesque locations on the property. The entire menu and food preparation are overseen by the Yuvrani herself which assures the best quality of food that is not too heavy in masalas and oil.

The lunch is served near the lake in a small garden. It is a 3-course meal wherein soup is served on the table and the rest is a buffet. We had Dal-Bati-Churma in one of the lunch meals and it was delicious. There is a bar in case one wants to order some drinks before their meal.

Hi-tea is served around the swimming pool. Sipping hot tea in the cool breeze while biting into steamy pakoras is a lovely way to spend the evening. The locally famous Hing Samosa is also sometimes served along with gud ki gajak, cookies, and finger sandwiches.

The dinner at Udai Bilas Palace is something not to be missed and the best way to experience royalty. Dinner is served at Jenana Chowk, a courtyard with a long marble dining table. This dining table has a water pool in the middle and inlay work along the edges. The dining table is further decked up with rose petals, candles, and fairy lights making visitors ‘wow’ at first sight!

The meals are traditional Rajasthani items with vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. Dahi wale aloo, laal maas and gatte ki sabji are on the menu along with bajri ki puri. The dessert is Ras Malai followed by Paan, the mouth freshener after such a scrumptious meal. 

The next day breakfast is served on the table adjacent to the marble table. This area has colorful glass chandeliers from the previous century. Breakfast is a mix of Gujarati + North Indian or South Indian snacks like khakhara, poha, idli sambhar, or aloo paratha. There is a live omelet counter as well as juices and fresh fruits.

UDAI BILAS PROPERTY TOUR | THINGS TO SEE

This is a perfect staycation option as there are many things to do and see in the property itself and one does not need to go out to get entertained.

Ek Thambia Mahal

Literally meaning a single-pillared palace, the structure was built using white marble and the locally available pareva and balwariya stones overlooking the Gaib Sagar Lake. 

The palace features intricate sculptured pillars and panels, spectacular arches, ornate balconies, bracketed windows, beautiful arches, and a frieze of marble carvings, a notable marvel of Rajput architecture. The palace is divided into three parts viz Udai Bilas, Raniwas, and Krishna Prakash. 

All other parts of the Palace were slowly added as an extension to Ek Thambia Mahal Dungarpur.

Ek Thambia Mahal is visible from Art Deco Suite and Maharawal Suite and can be passed while going to Jenana Chowk. It is possible to go up the ladder in Ek Thambia Mahal and see the sculptures up close and personal. Just request at the reception and someone will open up the door.

It is lit up in the evening and looks equally mesmerizing in dark.

Dungarpur Mews

This 19th-century Udai Bilas Palace boasts an elegant mew, which has been converted into a vintage car museum and is a must-visit for anyone who loves cars. A horse stable and a storage yard later, the mews house 40-odd cars from all the well-known brands.

A 1947 Packard Clipper Deluxe, a 1939 Fiat 7-seater saloon, a 1942 Willys MB Jeep, a 1952 Willys CJ3A, a 1950 Cadillac Series 62 convertible, a 1949 Standard Flying 14, a 1966 Volkswagen Beetle, and a 1975 Land Rover are some of them on display and all of them still in working condition. There is a scaled-down replica of the DH-5 aircraft.

Garage Bar

After heartily looking at each car and taking picture of it and it, there is a small door that leads visitors to the Garage Bar. literally meaning a bar in the garage. It houses all the possible car accessories, trinkets, murals, souvenirs, paintings, and quotes about motor vehicles. 

There are tire-shaped bar stools, sofa upholstery with car prints, and glass globes containing miniature cars that dangle from the roof. Every inch of the interior has a perfectly placed frame or accessory making it extremely aesthetic. 

To give it the perfect garage feeling, the entire bar actually sits on a hydraulic pump and goes 2 meters above the ground. Talking about being on cloud 9!

Outdoor / Indoor Games

A tennis court and table tennis table ensure the visitors are not bored. Also, there is enough space to play football and cricket.

Spa

The property offers carefully designed spa experiences that refresh and reinvigorate. There are three types of massages offered with different durations that are perfect for the body to relax and detox.

Swimming Pool

A swimming pool sits facing the Gaib Sagar lake, with stone-carved statues of elephants and crocodiles on its edge. It is designed in the infinity pool style overlooking the lake and marble temple.

Boating

Visitors staying at Udai Bilas Palace can go on a boat ride in Gaib Sagar Lake. Watching the sunset while paddling the slow boat is a great way to enjoy the evening. If you chose to go boating in the morning, there are ample birdwatching opportunities around the lake.

Birdwatching

The lake offers a perfect refuge to make species of endemic and migratory birds. Come winter and the lake is full of flocks of ducks and geese. There are even a few resident crocodiles that can be seen basking in the sun from the property. 

There are many benches around the property overlooking the lake that is perfect for a bird-watching sit-out. Don’t forget the binoculars and camera.

PLACES TO VISIT IN DUNGARPUR

If you want to step out of the property and see the town, then there are many options to amuse you. Some of them are

Juna Mahal

2 km away from Udai Bilas through the rickety roads, lies the much-dilapidated structure of Juna Mahal. It looks more like a fort than a palace with a fort wall behind it.

With two stories in the basement and five above, this seven-storied palace was made as a safe point from enemy attack in the 13th century. It is known to be the longest continuously inhabited palace in India as the royal family lived here from the 14th century to the early 20th century. 

What makes this palace unique is that each king who ruled here added art and made the interior unique. With narrow stairways up to the upper floor, it is a slow climb to discover what each floor unearths for visitors.

The first is the Darbar Hall, which holds the throne and a row of carpets leading to the throne from the bygone era. The entire hall is full of marble pillars, colorful glasswork, and painted ceilings. 

The Fateh Prakash Mahal is done up with mirror inlay motifs of flowers, birds, and animals, whereas the Jaali ka Mahal lives up to its name with exquisite latticework letting in breeze and sunlight. The Sheesh Mahal has some of the best Rajasthani mirror work I have seen. It surely reminded me of the one in Amer Fort, Jaipur.

Each floor is a revelation of miniature paintings, murals, and mirror work, some of which are fading with time and begging for attention. 

The topmost floor offers lovely views of Dungarpur town.

Shrinathji Temple

One of the places to visit in Dungarpur is Shrinathji Temple. A marble temple nestled on the banks of Gaib Sagar shines even at night from the Palace. 

A big complex with many smaller shrines leads to the main temple. Shrinathji Temple houses life-size idols of Lord Shrinath and Goddess Radhika. Adjacent to this temple is two other temples – one dedicated to Lord Ram and another dedicated to Shri Banke Bihari Ji.

Badal Mahal

Badal Mahal is one of the popular tourist spots in Dungarpur for the locals. Overlooking the Gaib Sagar Lake and the artificial fountains, Badal Mahal is a big area that houses a palace-like structure that is now converted into a museum. Locals enjoy their picnic and snack time here during sunset.

Dungarpur War Museum

A war museum is created to give information about Indian Armed Forces including the army, navy, and air force. The foundation dates, important events, and uniforms are displayed in this small museum.

This museum surely reminded me of my visit to National War Memorial, Delhi.

FINAL THOUGHTS ABOUT UDAI BILAS PALACE DUNGARPUR

Although a palace, this elegantly designed and aesthetically pleasing luxurious stay has a warm, homely feeling. I can safely say that it is a royal ‘homestay’ that radiates charm, warmth, and grace. The hosts and the staff is friendly and one can easily pick up a conversation with them. The warm hospitality is a warrant I would love to come back and stay here.

Dambulla is a town situated in the Matale District of Sri Lanka and is known for having the largest and best-preserved temple complex in Sri Lanka.

Dambulla is perfectly located at a short distance from Kandy, Sigiriya, and Habarana all of which have heritage sites in Sri Lanka. It is also perfectly located between Minneriya National Park and Kaudulla National Park and a day trip is possible to cover the wildlife.

While there are many things to do in Dambulla and around, it is best to catch a breather here to relax. A staycation at Jetwing Lake Dambulla is the best way to go about it.

HOW TO REACH DAMBULLA

Dambulla is ta the core of Heritage sites in Sri Lanka. It is situated close to Habarana and Kandy. It is ideal to hire a car from the Kandy airport to reach the resort of your choice. Visitors can request the resort to arrange transport for them too.

ALL ABOUT JETWING LAKE DAMBULLA

Jetwing Dambulla is nestled in the offroad from Dambulla town. A road full of tall trees almost resembling a forest, makes way for a humble-looking building.

Our group reached in the evening and the darkness did not do justice to the surroundings. We climbed a floor to reach an open long hallway.

Welcome Drink and Check-in

We were greeted with ‘Ayubowan’ (may you live a long life). And soon enough served with 2 options of welcome drink. I tried both of them and both were delicious. Alas, I forgot what they were.

We waited at the waiting lounge which had a wall full of Sri Lankan trinkets to amuse us. Red, blue, and green miniature tuk-tuks, wooden elephant statues, wooden masks, and a lot more.

The check-in was smooth and easy.

Then, we were briefed about the in-house naturalist and complimentary birdwatching tours offered by Jetwing Lake Dambulla.

A staff accompanied us with our room keys.

On the way to the room in the waiting lounge corner, I saw a board with the details of bird sightings of the day on different trails. I promised to go on at least one during my 3-night stay!

Accommodation at Jetwing Lake Dambulla

We crossed another long passage to reach an in-house bridge overlooking the alluring pool. The tiring day sure made me want to jump in the pool and on inquiring about the timings, there were only 30 minutes left on the pool. I promised to jump in the next day!

There are a total of 94 rooms divided into 3 categories at Jetwing Lake Dambulla. Contemporary rooms with all modern amenities, a stacked mini-bar, and a complimentary fruit platter welcome guests into the property.

In addition to the private balconies, all rooms at Jetwing Lake also include relaxing features that allow guests to unwind. From the plush bathtubs to soak in after a long day out in the Cultural Triangle, or the comfortable seating areas near the floor-to-ceiling windows, our Jetwing group sure knows how to make guests’ stay a memorable one.

Suite

The property houses four luxury suites, that are the epitome of comfort. The suite comes with a separate living area, a bathroom, and a small kitchenette. There is changing room along with the bathroom. The plush interiors with modern amenities make this a really spectacular option for a stay.

The key feature of the suite is the bathtub on the open balcony and a private sit-out.

Deluxe Room

Of the three variants of rooms available at Jetwing Lake, there are 78 Deluxe Rooms that complement the surrounding greenery. A huge room opens into an even bigger balcony overlooking the pool, the lake beyond it, and the mountains in the distance.

The plush bathroom with luxurious toiletries promises the same view as the bathtub.

I was put up in the Deluxe room. I crossed a long hallway to reach my room which was the second to last in the row. On the left huge trees made their presence felt with the chirping of birds. The next morning I spotted an Asian Paradise Flycatcher, Jungle Fowl, Spotted Dove, Oriental Magpie Robin, and a few common birds simply by standing on the balcony.

The first I noticed when I entered the room was drinking water served in glass bottles. I had passed several posters on the property talking about sustainable initiatives and I noticed it in the room.

On the left, there was the bathroom with miniature refillable glass bottles of shampoo and soap. Also, a note if guests wished to reuse the towels to save water.

A king-size bed, a study table, and an alluring balcony with a fantastic view welcome me into my room. It was almost dinner time and I decided to catch an early dinner.

FOOD AT JETWING LAKE DAMBULLA

Jetwing Dambulla offers a Buffet option for breakfast and dinner depending on the package you choose. Since guests mostly spend their days exploring the Dambulla area it is best to go for the MAP plan (breakfast + dinner buffet).

The menu is a combination of Sri Lanka cuisine (comprising veg curries and different types of meat) as well as international cuisine such as continental and Indian in order to cater to all types of guests. A vegetarian and vegan can happily eat here without worrying about their food habits.

The buffet consists of a huge array of bread baskets, soup with flavored butter, chutneys, salads, different types of curries with different types of rice, a live counter serving pasta and kebab, and many types of desserts and fruits.

The breakfast spread is equally good with different types of detox water, fruits with yogurts, curry served with rice or string hoppers or dosa, and other continental dishes. They also offer breakfast on the go and are happy to pack sandwiches and baked goodies.

In case the guests want to enjoy an a la, carte menu there is a Chinese restaurant on the premises as well as a bar.

THINGS TO DO IN AND AROUND THE PROPERTY

Although visitors stay here while they are on a cultural tour of heritage sites, a staycation at Jetwing Lake Dambulla is a great option all year round.  is the right call. This section is for visitors who always want to do something even on a staycation (includes me)!

Suwa Arana Spa

Suwa Arana Spa at Jetwing Lake has carefully designed spa experiences that refresh and reinvigorate. With an array of massages and facials, it is surely a great way for the body to relax and detox.

Enjoy the pool

The pool is a refreshing breather after a long day walking around at heritage sites. The pool is always clean and the cold water is amazing. The view is perfect with the lake and mountains as the backdrop. There is also a poo-side bar so guests can order drinks from there.

Dahaiyagala Hike

Mount Dahaiyagala is a rocky escarpment located northeast of the hotel. Located at the height of 400 MSL, the hike takes visitors through the rustic paths of the village, forest, and small reservoirs. The road will take you to the summit that offers panoramic views of the magnificent mountains, lakes, and forests.

Bird-watching on Jetwing property

Thanks to Jetwing lake, there is a thriving population of birds in the resort and around the lake area. If you are a wildlife enthusiast who will be happy clicking away pictures or trying to identify the birds’ species from the balcony too.

It was also so considerate of the staff to put up a barricade on the group around a Red Wattled Lapwing’s nest. Lapwings nest on the ground so the eggs are always threatened.

If guests have more time, then there are a couple of trails on which they arrange birdwatching activities. Siyambalagaswewa Lake Birding Trail is 90 minutes and a 1.5 km walk from the hotel premises.

Village Walk

The best way to see a country is through the countryside and what bets way than taking a walk through Sri Lankan village life.

 Paddy cultivation is the occupation of most villagers and one can walk through these beautiful paddy fields, forests, teak plantations, etc. along the hike, one will be able to observe Sri Lanka’s varied and wonderful biodiversity, geography, cultural diversity, and lifestyles.

SUSTAINABILITY AT JETWING

The Jetwing group is conscious of the environment and has inculcated many sustainable values. Some of the initiatives include the type of construction, no plastic policy, solar energy, effluent treatment plant, and others. Let us look at them in detail.

Zero carbon initiatives

An in-house biomass boiler facilitates air conditioning across the property. The boiler produces 2000 kilograms of steam per hour that is used for air conditioning, hot water generation as well in the laundry. The chiller uses less than one-tenth of the electricity of a conventional chiller.

The biomass used is cinnamon wood-fired biomass stoves and all the cooking in the staff cafeteria uses this electricity.

Solar Energy Usage

The property utilizes a 300-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system that takes care of 40% of daily electricity consumption such as heating water.

Effluent water treatment

The property treats 100% of the wastewater generated on the premises through the effluent treatment plant. The ETP has a fully functional biological treatment method and gravity filtration.

Solid waste management

The property has a biogas plant with a capacity to digest 500 kg/day of waste. The methane produced after digestion is used in the staff kitchen to prepare meals. The sludge is used as a soil enhancer.

In order to cater to horticulture waste, the property has a windrow composter. All the collected garden waste is put through the composting process and the compost is used in the organic garden as fertilizer.

No plastic policy

The property owns an onsite semi-automated water bottling plant. The property has scraped using PET bottles but uses glass bottles instead that are refilled in this plant. Even in the kitchen, PET water bottles are not used.

Organic farm

Jetwing Lake Dambulla has an on-site organic farm. This 1.5 acres sprawling farm grows a variety of regional fruits and vegetables that are used in the kitchen. The compost from the property is used here as a fertilizer.

Organic honey harvesting

Jetwing Dambulla hosts 4 bee colonies. The honey collected after a 4-month harvest period is internally used in the kitchen.

FINAL THOUGHTS ABOUT JETWING LAKE DAMBULLA

I had a relaxing time at Jetwing Lake and especially loved the food and birdwatching trails during the short visit that I was there. The resort is extremely beautiful, cozy, and comfortable with delicious food. Based on my experience, I would say that Jetwing Dambulla is one of the best Dambulla hotels here. The staff is friendly and one can easily pick up a conversation with them. The warm hospitality is a warrant I would love to come back and stay here.
