The lake is spectacle in itself at the sunrise as you are greeted by the sounds of cranes, flamingos doing yoga, cormorants basking in the sun’s glory and raptors hovering with empty stomachs.

The forest area around the lake will leave you mesmerized and remind you of a fairy tale. Look out for Sarus Crane (world’s tallest flying bird) on the outskirts of Thol in the nearby fields. You will also spot a lot of terrestrial birds on the opposite of walking trail in the tall trees. Most commonly seen are Brahminy starlings, green bee eater, black rumped flameback, spotted owlets, shikra, etc.

Timings: 6am to 6 pm everyday

Entry fees: Rs. 500 per car (any number of people in car allowed). It includes camera fees. You can park on the lake boundary road and then climb on the walking trail.

Best time to visit: Winter mornings. January and February are the best seasons from a personal experience for maximum bird spotting.

How to reach: It is 25km from Ahmedabad so best to drive by car or vehicle. It is a favorite route amongst cyclists, too.

Nalsarovar Lake

The Nalsarovar Lake is one of the largest water bird sanctuary in the country with an area of over 110 sq.km and is one of the most important birdwatching destinations around Ahmedabad.

The National Committee on Wetlands for intensive conservation has identified it to be one of the 15 important wetlands of India and was the only Ramsar site in Gujarat. The lake harbours one of the highest populations of waterfowl anywhere in India.

Nalsarovar is nothing short of liquid gold in the mornings and the sunsets are equally mesmerizing when the flock of birds take off together against the orange sun.

Due to the sheer size of the lake, one has to hire a boat to go in the lake. The locals are boat owners and you will probably have to haggle as they try to extort extravagant amounts especially if you are not a local.

The prices are capped by the forest department but still the boat owners will bribe you to take to an exclusive place. If you are a serious photographer then I’ll say avoid the boat but if you there just for picnic, I’ll suggest otherwise. My recommendation would be not to pay the boat owner unless you have seen the place and you are confident of having a good time.

Timings: 6 am to 5:30 pm everyday

Entry fees: Rs. 60 per person, Rs. 100 per camera, Rs. 220 per person for boat (duration: 2 hours). Car parking is extra. In case you want to spend more time on the boat, the charges are extra.

Best time to visit: Winter mornings. October to February is the ideal time.

How to reach: It is 60km from Ahmedabad and ideal to drive by personal or hired car.

Vadla Lake

If haggling with the boat guy is not in your best interest and you want to enjoy birdwatching at your own pace, Vadla is the right place for you. It is in the close vicinity to Nalsarovar (25 km) and you can walk around the dam water to capture bird photos.

Vadla is generally ignored by tourists as their favorite attraction of boating doesn’t exist here, which works out best for serious birdwatchers. Vadla generally comes into highlight only when Nalsarovar dries out after a bad monsoon so tourists then flock there.

But for years now, Vadla has seen a steady flock of migratory birds in its waters and that is why it is an important birdwatching destinations around Ahmedabad.

The favorite and most in number being – Demoiselle cranes – thousands of them. In early January 2019, when we visited we counted over 3000 of them doing their business of calling, preening, foraging and practicing display. The Demoiselle Cranes are indigenously found in central Eurasia, Mongolia and North Eastern China and spend their winters in Gujarat.

Other commonly seen water birds are also in plenty in Vadla and your camera will have a gala time clicking away.

Timings: 6 am to sunset everyday

Entry fees: None.

Best time to visit: Winter months – October to February.

How to reach: It is 90km from Ahmedabad and ideal to drive by personal or hired car.

Pariej Lake

Another wetland called Pariej is located in the Kheda district of Gujarat. Because of its location it is closer to 2 cities in Gujarat – Ahmedabad and Vadodara. If you happen to visit Pariej in February, you will be welcomed by the pink blanket of lotuses. A Pheasant tailed jacana will be going around his business and you will notice a lot of moorhens trying to catch their breakfast. Pied kingfishers may dart around and painted storks may just pose pretty for you. That’s Pariej for you.

How to reach: It is 60km from Ahmedabad and ideal to drive by personal or hired car.

Indroda Park

Indroda Nature Park, Gandhinagar is a game changer for terrestrial birds and a must visit place for birdwatching community. Yes, it has a zoo but the number of birds you see on the trees and the vicinity are phenomenal. Indroda Nature Park (INP) is spread over an area of about 400 hectare in Gandhinagar- and is divided in two parts – the western part is Indroda Nature Park and the eastern part is Wilderness Park.

Most commonly seen birds here are Indian peafowl – hundreds of them dancing, eating, singing, 3 types of kingfishers, Coppersmith barbet, spotted owlet, painted storks, rose ringed parakeet and so many more.

Timings: 8am to 6pm

Entry fees: Rs. 30/person. Parking fees extra depending on type of vehicle.

Best time to visit: All around the year in morning.

How to reach: It is 25km from Ahmedabad and ideal to drive by personal or hired car.

How to have a sustainable trip for Birdwatching destinations around Ahmedabad?

• Wear camouflage colours which will easily blend with the surrounding – gree and brown shades work the best around wetlands.
• Do not make noises when you spot a bird, it may get distracted and fly.
• Do not wear perfumes or body spray in the desert.
• You may carry water and food but do not picnic in these areas as most of them are wildlife

PLACES TO VISIT IN JAMNAGAR | THINGS TO DO IN JAMNAGAR

If you are spending some time in Jamnagar, the following are some of the places worth considering as they are considered the best Jamnagar visiting places. 

Lakhota Lake, Lakhota Palace and Lakhota Museum

Unfortunately, when I visited, except for the lake, everything else was closed due to Covid -19 restrictions in early January 2021! Google said it was open and I was so disappointed to reach a closed gate! Nevertheless, I am sharing whatever I was able to see.

Upon giving an entry fee of Rs. 10 to enter the lake premises, the thing that came into my mind was Kankaria Lake, Ahmedabad. It looked so similar in structure, the pathways, the boards and activities. 

Lakhota Lake is a lovely lake to spend some leisure time in the evening or walk in the mornings.

Lakhota Lake was earlier known as Ranmal Lake, which has been given a splendid facelift.

In the middle of the lake lies the Lakhota Palace and Lakhota Museum. And the periphery of the lake is a manmade 1.8 km periphery with jharokha sit-outs overlooking the centrepiece!

The palace entry is separate and chargeable (which I couldn’t go to!). Nevertheless, the palace looked amazing from the periphery and I had a great time photographing the birds in the lakes and the surroundings. Lakhota palace was made in the mid-19th century and has an archaeology museum that has sculptures dating back to the 9th century and houses firearms and ancient pottery items in its exhibit areas.

I walked around the periphery and explored that there are small garden spaces, children’s play areas and food kiosks. There is also a small city museum, bird’s enclosure and aquarium (INR 10 separate entry fees). Boating is another option but it was also closed when I visited.

Note: The lake has 9 entry and exit gates. Some of the gates were closed for renovation. It is best to choose a gate closest to your accommodation or area of interest.

Bhujiyo Kotho

The five-storied monument located on the bank of the Lakhota Lake is believed to have been built to provide protection and act as a watchtower. Now the tower provides a panoramic view of the city overlooking Lakhota lake. It is one of the most famous tourist places in Jamnagar because it is said to have a secret pathway which leads to Bhuj. 

Bhujiyo Kotho is not in great condition due to which it is under restoration and hence closed for visitors.

Bala Hanuman Temple

Take a quick exit from gate no. 8 of Lakhota lake to pray at the Bala Hanuman temple. This temple has to be on your places to visit in Jamnagar list.

Talk about tourist attractions with religious faith and this is the place to be in Jamnagar. The humble-looking structure houses the idols of Lord Ram, Lord Lakshman, Goddess Sita and Lord Hanuman. The temple has set a record in the Guinness Book of Records for chanting ‘Shri Ram, Jai Ram, Jai Jai Ram’ uninterruptedly since August 1, 1964. 

Visitors can pay their respects by praying to the idols or even join in the chanting process anytime between 6am to 9pm any day of the week.

Darbargadh Palace

I was quite excited to visit a palace in Jamnagar.

But it quickly turned into disappointment when I came to know that most of this palace was destroyed in the 2001 earthquake. What remains now is the outer periphery which has been turned into a market. Shops selling Bandhani fabrics are lined here in the maroon-coloured structure. Honestly, there was nothing to see here.

Jain temples of Jamnagar

In the Chandi Bazaar area of Jamnagar, two Jain temples are of utmost importance and one of the best places to visit in Jamnagar.

Shantinath temple and Adinath temple have existed since the 16th century and hold religious as well as historical value. Adinath temple is said to be the first Jain Tirthanker and there are 52 small temples which are built around the primary structure.

Both the temples look humble from the outside but have bold and vibrant colours inside. There is intricate work on the pillars, ceilings and walls of the temple. The recently renovated Shantinath temple is a sight to behold with its vibrant arches and gates.

I walked from Lakhota lake to Chandi Bazaar to explore the labyrinth alleys of Jamnagar. I always seem to find ample street photography opportunities in these places. All hail Google maps for taking me through the tiny lanes.

PLACES TO VISIT NEAR JAMNAGAR

Jamnagar is happily settled in such a place that it is blessed with amazing ecosystems around it. Visitors have to leave the city to experience the lovely nature retreat that it offers. You need more than one day in Jamnagar to cover these places. It is ideal to spend a weekend in Jamnagar to cover these places to visit near Jamnagar.

Pirotan Island

There are over 40 small and big islands around Jamnagar. One of the most important and popular ones is Pirotan Island as it comes under the Marine National Park.

The island occupies 3 square kilometres and is one of the two islands in the National Park that can be visited. Visitors who wish to visit here need prior permission from the Department of Forest Department, Customs Department, and the Ports Department.

After the permission, one needs to hire a boat from the port and it takes around two hours to reach the island. There is no place to stay on the island. Also, there are no arrangements for food and water arrangements here so prepare accordingly.

The park offers amazing varieties of mangroves and coral reefs. There are many aquatic creators such as herring gull, seagull, jellyfish, starfish, octopus, sea snakes, hermit crabs, sea horse, green sea turtles and dolphins which can be spotted here.

Narara National Park

The easier option than Pirotan Island is Narara. Also known as Marine National Park, it is spread over an area of 458 square kilometres and is blessed with a great diversity of ecosystems. These ecosystems support species of birds, fishes and reptiles.

It also has coral reefs and mangroves, which have great conservational value. It is considered to be one of the most popular tourist attractions in Jamnagar and one of the must-visit places in Jamnagar.

Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary

Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary is spread over an area of 6 square kilometres and includes a rich diversity of species. Apart from having rich varieties of marine and freshwater habitats, the place also includes diverse ecosystems such as marshy lands, salt pans, mangroves, mudflats, creeks, sandy beaches, and forest scrub making it a must to visit place for nature lovers. 

The sanctuary includes around 220 different species of both native and migratory birds.

SHOPPING IN JAMNAGAR

Just like the crafts of Kutch are famous, Jamnagar is the hub for tie and dye fabrics in Gujarat.

Locally known as Bandhani or Bandhej, the fabric is painstakingly prepared wherein a plain cloth is tied with threads and dyed to bring out various patterns. various types of fabrics are used such as cotton, polyester, silk which are turned into bedsheets, sarees, stoles, kurta sets, curtains, etc. in order to make sarees even richer, they are sewn with embroidered borders or mirror embellishments making Jamnagar Bandhani sarees, a speciality in itself.

There are many shops in Chandi Bazaar which sell authentic and beautiful Bandhani fabrics. Out of the entire lot, Mahavir Bandhani Store is the most promising store as it is a pioneer in the business with 100+ years of experience. They have a huge collection and it is impossible to go empty-handed from here.

Apart from Bandhani, Jamnagar is famous for

• Handicrafts

These items are available in many stores in Chandi Bazaar and Willingdon Crescent.

MUST TRY FOOD IN JAMNAGAR

Jamnagar has a different kind of food scene in spite of it being in Gujarat. 

Dry kachoris are something my colleague used to get for us and I have been a fan of it ever since. My favourite is the dry fruit kachori. There are 25 different fillings available. They can be packed and carried as souvenirs of Jamnagar as they can easily last for 2-3 weeks!

Spicy ghughras of Jamnagar are extremely famous and one cannot leave the city without trying this street food. It is served with raw onions and tangy chutney.

Chaas soda and ghorvu is also a street food worth trying. Apart from this visitors must try Kathiyawadi thali to get the best flavour of Kathiyawad.

PRACTICAL TIPS FOR PLACES TO VISIT IN JAMNAGAR

Best time to visit Jamnagar

Summers are harsh with high temperatures. Most of the national parks are closed during monsoons as the wetlands may get flooded. October to March is the perfect time to plan a trip to Jamnagar with December being a peak season. The weather is pleasant and you can stay out in the Sun all day long.

How to reach Jamnagar

By Road: State transport buses and private luxury coaches connect Jamnagar with various cities of Gujarat and Maharashtra. One can even self-drive the car as the roads are in excellent condition. 

By Railway: There are daily trains on the Western Railway with direct connections to Ahmedabad and Mumbai.

By Air: There is a domestic airport which is 10 km away from the city. Various domestic airlines connect Jamnagar to Mumbai.

Where to stay in Jamnagar

Being a town close to big refineries, Jamnagar has good hotel options catering to family rooms as well as business suites. 

Anaya Beacon Hotel and Hotel Aram are good options for accommodation in Jamnagar. I stayed in Anaya Beacon and found it to be covid safe, the rooms were clean and the food was amazing. 

Sustainable tips for places to visit in Jamnagar

• Respect the temples and their rules. Skirt and pants till knee level are good. Avoid spaghetti and tank tops. Cover your shoulders with a scarf if necessary.
• Do not harm the structures by carving or writing on it.
• Do not litter any of the tourist areas.
• Wear camouflage colours when visiting sanctuary areas which will easily blend with the surrounding – green and brown shades work the best around wetlands.

About Blackbuck National Park

Blackbuck National Park is spread over 34 square kilometres, and divided into two parts: the Grassland Area and the Wetland Area. A narrow road divides the park and visitors can enter both of these areas.

In yesteryear, this was the private grassland of the Maharaja of Bhavnagar for hunting blackbucks with his famous hunting cheetahs. In post-Independence India, this park was established in 1976 and doubled in size in 1980 protecting the wildlife. The cheetahs also do not exist.

Wildlife in Blackbuck National Park

The threatened species of Indian blackbuck has a population of over 5000 in the grasslands of Velavadar. They are a sight to behold, with the adult males sprinting off the ground, a behaviour designed to advertise the antelope’s fitness and ward off predators. You can tell the males by their corkscrew horns, pale black upper bodies, and white underbellies. Females and juveniles lack horns and are a sandy brown colour. The other major mammal, in the park is the nilgai or blue bull. Other easy-to-spot mammals include wild boar, the Indian grey mongoose, and the black naped hare.

Apart from Blackbuck, Velavadar is classified as an Important Bird Area by Birdlife International, and is a birder’s delight, with over 200 species of birds found in the grassland. It is mainly popular as the world’s largest roosting site of Harriers (pallid, montagu’s, western marsh, and hen harriers) which migrate in winters. Other birds in grassland include larks, francolin, stonechat, etc. and in wetlands include greater flamingos, pelicans, common cranes, painted storks etc. The grasslands are also a raptors’ paradise which include short toed eagle, steppe eagle, tawny eagle, eastern imperial eagle, short eared owl, etc.

Predators such as the Indian striped hyena, the golden jackal, the Indian fox, jungle cat and Indian grey wolf have also made this area their home. Many species of reptiles also live here, such as the saw-scaled viper, Indian cobra and common krait.

Safari Cost And Timings

Unlike most national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in India, visitors can take their own cars into the grasslands. The track is cleared marked which needs to be followed. It is compulsory to have a guide with you in the car. Visitors can hire a private safari vehicle as it gets really difficult to get bird photos in flight from your closed hatch of the car. Here is the cost break up (as of December 2019).

Rs. 500: Entry fees per vehicle (do consider one seat of guide)

Rs. 400: Forest department guide fees

Rs. 200: Per camera

Rs. 2000: Private safari (plus guide fees and camera fee)

Accommodation at Blackbuck National Park, Velavadar

There are two options for those who want to stay at Velavadar.

Forest Lodge

It is owned and managed by the forest department and has 2 categories of rooms which are basic, clean and with food options.

Guest house: Available with 4 rooms called Kaliyar Bhavan

Cost: Rs. 150 per person

Dormitory rooms: 2 dormitories which can accommodate upto 9 people each

Cost: Rs. 1350 for the whole dormitory

Both accommodations are located within the park, surrounded by grasslands with wildlife visible from the lodge itself. You can reserve the rooms by writing to bbnp.reservation@gmail.com and paying online. Meals cost Rs. 150 per person and Rs. 40 for breakfast.

Blackbuck Safari Lodge

It is a luxurious hotel with a multi cuisine restaurant and private pools.

When to visit Blackbuck National Park

Indian summers (March – June) are unbearable with temperatures hovering over 40°C. However it is a good time for sightings as animals congregate near water sources and the grass is sparse. However migratory birds are not present during this time. The park is closed from mid June to mid October. Winters (October to February) offer the best of bird watching and animal gazing with pleasant temperatures during the day.

How to reach Blackbuck National Park

By road:

Velavadar is 65 km from Bhavnagar and 150 km from Ahmedabad. Government run buses (GSRTC) have good frequency from all major Gujarat cities to Bhavnagar. If you are traveling via road from other states, you have to reach Ahmedabad first.

By train:

Bhavnagar is the closest railway station. You have to travel by road for further reaching Velavadar.

By air:

The closest airport is Ahmedabad.

Sustainable tips for visiting Blackbuck National Park

• Even if visitors are allowed to take their own car, visitors are not allowed to get down. Earlier it was allowed, but now it is not. There are camera traps and you will be fined if you get down. You are however allowed to get down near the wetland.
• Wear camouflage colours which will easily blend with the jungle – shades of green, brown and grey.
• It is totally understandable to get excited when you spot a wild animal in the grassland. But do not make noises – whisper if necessary.
• Do not wear perfumes or body spray in the jungle.
• Carry water and food but do not dispose plastic or leftover food in the grasslands. Keep it in your bag or gypsy and dispose safely once you return to the hotel.
• Do not feed food to wild animals.

Polo Forest, Gujarat

Polo Forest is one of the best places to visit near Ahmedabad, especially in monsoon!

Polo is an ancient historical site in Gujarat and perfect for a one day trip from Ahmedabad. Modhera Sun Temple

If architecture is something that intrigues you then head north towards Mehsana to reach Modhera Sun Temple which is about 100 km from Ahmedabad. Modhera Sun temple is totally worthy for a one day trip from Ahmedabad as it is architecturally mind-blowing. Appreciate the intricate carvings in the temple which is a depiction of the Sun and its unity with earth’s elements – air, water, soil & space. Driving distance from Ahmedabad to Modhera: 100 km (approx 2.5 hours)

Rani-ki-Vav-Patan

This trip to Modhera can be combined with Patan which is further 43 km from Modhera. Patan is popular for 2 things: Patola Sarees and Rani ki Vav. Rani ki Vav is a stepwell situated in Patan and is the finest and the largest stepwell in Gujarat. It is built using Maru-Gurjara architecture style, reflecting complex technique and details. The stepwell is divided into seven levels of stairs with over 200 sculptural panels and 500 sculptures which are ornamented on sidewalls. Due to its beautifully adorned sculptures, Rani ki Vav is listed as one of the 38 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India.

Patan also has the ancient heritage os Patola saree weaving. A Patola museum is set up on the way to Rani ki Vav called Patan Patola Heritage. It exhibits all the types of equipment, materials and techniques used for weaving the double Ikat. get fascinated with the demonstration and bowled over by the finished products. Known to be one of the most expensive handlooms, you will be tempted to have a piece for yourself. Splurge away if you can.

Statue of Unity

Statue of Unity from Ahmedabad is becoming one of the most popular day trips. Statue of Unity is the world’s tallest statue and it is the statue of Shri Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, built as a memorial to the contributions of Sardar Vallabhbhai in the country’s freedom struggle and the stellar role he played in unifying the country into a nation. 

The statue is situated on an island near the Sardar Sarovar Dam. The area around the statue has an exhibition gallery, viewing gallery, the valley of flowers, memorial, audiovisual gallery, Sardar Sarovar Dam, River rafting and Jungle safari. With so many activities present, a day trip is funfilled with loads of activities. This is one of the best places to visit near Ahmedabad.

Nalsarovar

Nalsarovar is the answer for all birdwatchers in the state. Already a favourite amongst professional photographers, Nalsarovar is also looked upon as a family picnic spot. It is the only Ramsar Wetland site in the state and is extremely important for the ecology around. Although Nalsarovar is closed in the monsoon, enthusiasts can visit the periphery areas to photograph the indigenous species. If you hire a guide for a day, you can also visit the plains nearby which is a habitat of many other animals and birds. 

Nalsarovar has documented close to 200 species of birds during winters, many of which are migratory. Watching flamingos here is a joy and should not be missed.

Zanzari Waterfalls

Wondering if there waterfalls near Ahmedabad? Zanzari waterfall is the answer.

Zanzari waterfall also known as Jhanjhari Waterfall is a waterfall on the Vatrak River, Kheda region. A small hike on the rocks leads to the main fall which has a fall of 25 meters. It is a good picnic spot to spend a day with family or friends. Zanzari waterfall is fuller during monsoon with the rain waters and has negligible water during other seasons. Driving Distance from Ahmedabad to Zanzari waterfall: 75 km (approx. 2 hours)

Lothal

Lothal is a 4,500-year-old town which was an important port on the Indian subcontinent during the Harappan Civilization. It was discovered in 1954, post-independence and is an important archaeological site due to its scientific layout and a massive dockyard that facilitated trade with other civilizations of the time.

The major attractions in Lothal are the vast ruins of the ancient city which includes ancient dockyard, the acropolis, the lower town, the bead factory, the warehouses, and the drainage system.

A museum houses the objects found from the ancient site along with information. The museum also displays seals from Bahrain, terracotta figures from Sumeria, and objects from Egypt. 

Distance from Ahmedabad to Lothal: 85 km (approx. 2 hours)

Blackbuck National Park, Velavadar

The golden grasslands of Velavadar are the habitat of the threatened species – Indian Blackbuck. In order to conserve their dwindling numbers, Velavadar has a dedicated area called the Blackbuck National Park. Over 5000 blackbucks freely roam in these grasslands. It is an absolute delight to watch them sprint around. If you are a wildlife enthusiast and really craving for those wildlife photoshoots, fret not and head straight to Velavadar from Ahmedabad. The park is closed in monsoon but you will find ample blackbucks from the highway and the shutter of your camera would be happy to fire away.

Orsang Camp Resort, Chanod

Orsang camp is a favourite among corporates for one-day tour packages from Ahmedabad. With a huge area, Orsang offers many activities that are good enough to engage kids, friends on a picnic, team-building for office colleagues or just a family staycation. 

Situated on the Orsang river, there are adventure activities such as zip-lining across the river and kayaking. Some activities on the site include BURMA Bridge, Tyre Walk, Monkey Bridge, Walk-in Air-On Tyre, ZigZag Commando Net and Swing Bridge among others.

Vadnagar, Gujarat

Vadnagar, famous as Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s hometown, is an ancient heritage town. Although it does not feature on the tourist’s circuit, it is one of the best places in Gujarat for architecture lovers. A perfect showcase of Solanki dynasty carvings can be seen at Kirti Toran (two intricately carved columns made in the 12th century, that support an arch 40 feet in height). 

Talking about carvings, the Hateshwar Mahadev temple, a 17th-century temple is one of the most beautiful, intricately carved temples. Other than this there is a lake, Jain temple, step-well and garden that deserve a visit in Vadnagar.

Distance from Ahmedabad to Vadnagar: 100 km (2.5 hours)

Bakor Nature Camp

Bakor has emerged as a perfect camping getaway in Gujarat. While it is ideal to spend a night here in the wilderness, a day trip to Bakor is possible and is very rewarding. Bakor is a small village in Mahisagar district on the foothills of the Aravalli Range. It is blessed with abundant trees, waterfalls, good birdlife, historical places and tribal culture. Experiencing the outdoors in Gujarat could never have been this rewarding.

If you choose Bakor one day picnic then places to visit in Bakor include Kadana dam, Adadari waterfall, Kaleshwari temple and Dodavanta lake. If you choose Bakor Nature camp then be ready to be bowled with the picturesque bounty of nature. There are options for trekking, jungle trail, birdwatching and campfire at night.

ABOUT GIRNAR

Situated at the far end of the ancient town of Junagadh, climbing Mount Girnar is one of the reputed excursions for Hindu and Jain pilgrims. It is the highest mountain in the state of Gujarat. Girnar is an ancient hill in Junagadh which has 866 Hindu and Jain temples that are spread over various summits. The climb to Girnar Hill summit starts from Girnar Taleti. On reaching the summit, you can see many mountains further but they are usually not scaled. 

Mount Girnar is also known as Girnar Parvat (translated as a hill in local language Gujarati), is believed to be older than the Himalayas. The Jain temples on the mountain are considered as the most ancient temples in India. The mountain is celebrated as the Nirvan Bhumi of the 22nd Tirthankara Lord Neminath. 

Owing to all of this, Girnar is an important pilgrimage centre for people from many faiths who visit every year.

GIRNAR PARIKRAMA

Girnar Parikrama or the Girnar Circumambulation is also very popular amongst pilgrims. The length of Circumambulation is 38km in total and it happens in the month of November. During this parikrama, people walk around Mount Girnar in a circle as it is believed that 33 kinds of deities reside on the holy mountain and doing circulation to this mountain gives the result of worshipping all the deities.

GIRNAR ROPEWAY IN GUJARAT

Way before the ropeway, the men carried pilgrims in a makeshift chair called ‘doli’ to make sure people got their blessings. Now getting those blessings is much easier.

Girnar Ropeway is Asia’s longest ropeway operating on the length of 2.3km. The ropeway covers half of the climb at 5000 steps and ends at Ambaji Temple. The climb which otherwise takes 4 hours to complete can be done within 7 minutes in the ropeway. 

The ropeway operates mono-cable gondola detachable type lifts also known as cable cars. Nine towers have been erected between Bhavnath Taleti and Ambaji Temple. The highest pole is 66-m and is placed on the 1000th step of Girnar. The cable cars can accommodate 7-8 passengers. A total of 25-30 cable cars can move at the same time.

Booking Girnar Ropeway Ticket Online

Visitors can book online tickets for the Girnar Ropeway. The ticket prices for Girnar Ropeway are INR 400 (one-way) and INR 700 (two-way). For children between 5 and 10 years of age, the fare is INR 350. 

Visitors can also buy the tickets on the spot but the area tends to be crowded and you need to wait longer than online bookings. Visitors can buy the return ticket from Ambaji temple to go back to Taleti in case they are tired or are not sure about the slot or just want to enjoy the ropeway one way.

Girnar Ropeway Timings

The timings of Girnar Cable Car ride is 8 am and 5 pm. If you miss the 5 pm slot, you will have to walk back all the way.

Best time to visit Girnar Ropeway

If you want to explore the ropeway, the time and weather doesn’t really matter as there are air-conditioned waiting halls. However, winters (November to February) are the best time to visit Girnar, as the temperatures are pleasant in case you decide to trek some portion.

Availability of Food at Girnar

There are refreshment stalls in the waiting area while leaving (Taleti) as well as at Ambaji Temple point (at the peak). There is even a water refill station. However, if you decide to trek the rest, there are small refreshment shops selling Gujarati and Punjabi cuisines to Coke and juice bottles so you will never be hungry or dehydrated. 

How to Reach Girnar

Girnar is 5 km from Junagadh, and easily accessible from different parts of the country. 

By Air:

The nearest airport is Keshod Airport, which is at a distance of 40 km. Auto rickshaws, cabs and buses can then take you to Junagadh/Girnar. Rajkot Airport is a bigger airport and better flight connectivity and is at a distance of approximately 100 km. The nearest international airport is Ahmedabad Airport, which is at a distance of approximately 330 km and can be reached in about 6 hours. From Ahmedabad, private cabs, trains and buses are frequently available. 

By train:

Junagadh has a train station and has a good frequency from Ahmedabad. It is the nearest train station to Girnar. 

By bus/car:

If you’re travelling by road, travel is convenient and there are a lot of transport options available. For people driving their own vehicles, the roads are well laid out, making the journey comfortable.

Where to stay in Junagadh or near Girnar

Being a pilgrim town, Junagadh has many ashrams and dharamshalas catering to the pilgrims. These are affordable in price and generally available for on the spot booking. They are fully booked during main festivals. The food served here is simple and vegetarian.

There are also hotels available in and around Junagadh. Some suggestions are:

RIDING THE GIRNAR ROPEWAY | MY EXPERIENCE

We booked the tickets online wherein we were asked for a slot. Visitors have to reach within the slot. This is done to avoid overcrowding and lessen the waiting time. So we reached at 11:45 am for the 12-1 pm slot. The visitors have to reach the Girnar taleti where the tickets are checked. From here there was a body frisking and through bag checking.

Then we were directed into a huge waiting hall which had ropeway history and Girnar ropeway information displayed. Being a Sunday the area was quite crowded with long waiting lines. We had to wait for almost 30 minutes before we got into a cable car.

There is a snacks corner to buy some refreshments as well as clean washrooms around the waiting area. The waiting at Girnar ropeway also has seating arrangements with social distancing instructions in case visitors or elderly want to give a rest to their feet.

Just before boarding our tickets were scanned again and we were asked to board the cable car. The cable car never really stops. It dropped visitors on one side, and we boarded immediately from the other side. And then it took off. And trust me when I say this, but the ride is not for the faint-hearted. The drop is scary but it makes up for the views – just don’t look down!

The 9 minutes Girnar ropeway ride was extremely noise-free, comfortable and absolutely breathtaking. If you have not experienced a ropeway ever before, then this is a great place to do it. the views from the cable car included seeing pilgrims huffing and puffing while climbing the steps and vultures take off from the cliff of mountains.

The ventilated cable cars ensured there was a cool breeze flowing in. We could see the Jain temples on our right and just like that the 9 minutes were over.

We climbed one floor one to take blessings from the Ambaji temple and take in the stunning views around. We contemplated climbing either to the Jain temples or to the Dattatreya Temple but it would have taken up the whole day and we promised ourselves to plan better for next time before coming.

THINGS TO DO IN AHMEDABAD OLD CITY

Ahmedabad is known for its unique blend of centuries-old architecture, contemporary culture, vibrant festivals, a hub of industries, and a food lover’s paradise. 

Ahmedabad is a city where traditions and culture date back 600 years and many religions have been woven together. So it’s only fair to start exploring Ahmedabad to know why it is a Heritage City. 

Ahmedabad Heritage Walk is also known as Mandir se Masjid tak as it starts at a temple and ends at a mosque. This walk is a two-kilometer walk held every day. There are a total of 20 sights that include, Hindu and Jain temples, a mosque, chowks and exquisitely carved bird feeders. The duration of the walk is approximately 2 hours and is a guided tour.

Whether visitors decide to go on a walk or not, some of the best places to visit in Ahmedabad old city are:

Pay respects at Shree Swaminarayan Temple, Kalupur

Shree Swaminarayan temple was built in 1822 and is a multi-colored, wood-carved Swaminarayan Temple in Ahmedabad. This is where the Ahmedabad Heritage Walk starts from.

It was the first temple of the Swaminarayan Hindu sect. It presents idols of Nara Narayana, who occupies the principal seat of the temple, and forms of Arjuna and Krishna at the central altar. The sculptures showcase the cultures and costumes of Maharashtra and Gujarat. The devotees can avail themselves of the live darshan of the temple here.

Get lost in the Pols of Ahmedabad

A pol (પોળ) is a housing cluster just like the gated housing societies. Each pol is self-contained with its own community well, a chabutara (bird feeder), and a place of worship. The central chowk of each pol plays the role of a community center – doubling up as a playing space for the kids and a corner for the men, women, and elders to catch up daily chit-chat.

There are over 300 pols in the walled city of Ahmedabad.

Say a prayer at Jama Masjid Ahmedabad

The Jama Masjid is a mosque with a reservoir in the center. The massive proportions of the place reminded me Jama Masjid Delhi. Overlooking a towering overhead light, there are 15 domes and 260 elegant pillars. 

Constructed by the founder of Ahmedabad, Ahmed Shah I in the early 14th century, it is a peaceful and quiet area with a huge expanse. People can be seen praying throughout the day. 

The exterior of the mosque has elements from Islamic and Gujarat styles of architecture. The sculptures include floral motifs and geometrical patterns on walls and pillars.

Get awed by Dada Harir ni Vav

Out of the two ancient step-wells that are located around Ahmedabad, Dada Harir Stepwell (Bai Harir Vav) is often cast aside for the more famous one in Adalaj.

But, I would highly recommend that you don’t skip this historic stepwell as it is far bigger with equally as amazing architecture on its many levels. Not to mention, you will probably have the whole vav to yourself!

The Dada Harir Stepwell is a 15th-century water temple that has five levels and they are held up by intricately carved pillars that have perfect symmetry throughout the well. 

At one end, there is a huge octagonal vav that is 190 feet deep. It can be accessed via a narrow spiral staircase inside the structure.

This stepwell has both Arabic and Sanskrit inscriptions as well as Jain and Hindi idols carved inside. There are also Persian carvings of flowers and elephants lining the walls too.

Visit Sidi Saiyyed Mosque

Another architectural marvel is the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque, which is a tribute to Ahmedabad. Sidi Saiyyed Jali is so popular that it has become an unofficial symbol of Ahmedabad and is often used as an Ahmedabad souvenir or for felicitating delegates in workshops. The mosque is located in the heart of the 600-year-old walled city of Ahmedabad, at a very busy intersection. The mosque is set up like a theatre without a fourth wall and has carvings depicting a tree with intertwining branches of filigree work hewn from solid stone.

Visit Bhadra Fort and Bhadrakali Temple

Bhadra Fort was built by Ahmed Shah, the founder of Ahmedabad city, in the 14th century. 

The fort was given its name due to the Bhadrakali Temple that stands nearby.

The fort housed royal palaces and the beautiful Nagina Baugh and the royal Ahmed Shah’s Mosque on the west side and an open area known as Maidan-Shah on the east side. It had a fortified city wall with 14 towers, eight gates and two large openings covering an area of 43 acres.

Explore the carvings at Hutheesing Jain Temple

Ahmedabad has been a significant religious place for Jainism and houses several Jain pilgrimage centers. Hutheesing Jain Temple is one of the must-see places in Ahmedabad. An architectural gem of the city, the temple draws a huge crowd owing to its divinity and serene ambiance. Ornamented with stunning stone carvings, the temple is a masterpiece built in white marble.

Question the architecture at Jhulta Minar of Ahmedabad

Jhulta means to shake and Minar means a pillar. I remember visiting Ahmedabad as a kid when visitors were allowed to go inside the Minar and actually see them shaking. Now in a dilapidated state without any maintenance, they are closed for demonstrations, i.e. one cannot go inside. However, you can still wonder about the working of the monument from the outside. It is definitely one of the Ahmedabad heritage places from yesteryears.

These minars have fascinating architectural styles made of stone with intricate carvings. What makes them special is that if one of the pillars was shaken with a gentle force, the opposite pillar would sway. It is indeed difficult to comprehend the kind of science people used, centuries before to make such wonders work. 

There are two well-known pairs of Jhulta Minar in Ahmedabad, one located opposite the Sarangpur Darwaja and the other near the Kalupur Railway Station Ahmedabad.

Feel at peace at Sabarmati Ashram Ahmedabad

Also known as the Gandhi Ashram, it is the highlight of the Ahmedabad sightseeing tour. Sabarmati Ashram is the must-visit place in Ahmedabad as it is popular as Mahatma Gandhi’s yesteryear residence. Sabarmati Ashram also referred to as Harijan Niwas is situated on the banks of the Sabarmati river. 

Gandhi’s residence was turned into a museum and it is a great place to learn about his principles and his overall life of struggle and contribution to India’s freedom. The Ashram can be visited at any time of the day, and it has a positive vibe which will make the visitors relaxed.  You cannot miss the Charkha (spinning wheel) used by him wherein he made khadi clothes, his handwritten letters, paintings, and library. There is also a 90 minutes guided tour in case you want to know everything in detail.

Sarkhej Roza Ahmedabad is another mosque on the outskirts of the city. It is an elegant architectural complex in the city that combines designs from Persia with indigenous Hindu and Jain features to form a composite “Indo-Saracenic” architectural style. The structure is stunning because of the complete absence of arches. The Sarkhej Roza overlooks a beautiful lake and looks breathtaking after a monsoon rain. It is certainly Ahmedabad’s best places to visit.

Visit ISKCON Temple

ISKCON temples are present all over the world and like every other counterpart, it reflects a perfect blend of Gujarat and Rajasthani style of architecture. There are beautiful images of Lord Vishnu and his different avatars on both sides of the walls in the temple. 

Many facilities are provided by the temple which include a library, hostel, restaurant and a meditation room. Visitors generally prefer to experience the delicious pure vegetarian Prasad. A restaurant situated within the premises of the temple provides varied types of mouth-watering vegetarian delicacies.

This is one of the offbeat places to visit in Ahmedabad, especially after visiting all the temples and mosques. Bring in your own seating arrangements or simply relax in your car and watch the movie while munching on the snacks. Drive-in cinema can accommodate about 600 cars and over 5000 moviegoers in one show! No wonder it is one of the most popular things to do in Ahmedabad for couples.

If cars don’t fascinate you, motorcycles and carts manufactured by well-known automobile companies are also exhibited there.

Ahmedabad was formerly a textile hub. As a tribute to the textile industry, the Calico museum was set up to display various collections of ancient and modern textiles. The museum has an exclusive collection of religious textiles, miniature paintings, bronze items, royal tents, carpets, furnishings, and costumes of the Mughals and Jain art.

About 30 visitors are allowed each day on a first come first serve basis and hence it is advisable to do advance booking. Children below ten years are not allowed inside the museum. Children aged between 10 to 15 years are required to come along with their parents, guardian, or tutor. Photography is not permitted.

Walk on the Atal Bridge

Visit Dandi Kutir, Gandhinagar

Dandi Kutir is a museum devoted to the struggle of Mahatma Gandhi. 

Through audio-visuals, the museum displays Gandhi’s role in organizing the Dandi march against the imposition of salt laws in India. 

The Dandi March was one of the turning points in the history of colonial India, and the museum provides an elaborate illustration of it. The museum also has paintings, memoirs, and relics of Gandhiji, which he used during his freedom struggle.

Pray at the Swaminarayan Temple, Akshardham

The beautiful Akshardham Swaminarayan Temple is one of the best places to visit in Ahmedabad. Set amidst a sprawling garden in Gandhinagar, Swaminarayan Temple is a magnificent temple complex made of 6000 metric tons of pink sandstone. What’s interesting is that no steel has been used to construct this masterpiece.

Inside the sanctum, you will find a 7-foot-tall statue of Lord Swaminarayan in a sitting posture. There is also an Abhishek Mandapam within the premises where devotees can perform abhishek, a sacred Hindu ritual. The temple is closed every Monday.

Photograph the Adalaj Ni Vav

Move away from Ahmedabad towards Gandhinagar to visit the popular Adalaj ni vav. Vav means ‘Stepwell’. Complete with Indo-Islamic architectural style, the awe-inspiring stepwell is extremely impressive with its wall carvings. It used to be the source of water for travelers coming to this semi-arid area and for the nearby villagers in yesteryears before the pipelines reached people. 

The stepwell still enjoys a pleasantly cold temperature thanks to some water being present at the bottom of the well. However, beware of the mosquitoes because of the stagnant water, and the water also stinks. Adalaj ni Vav is one of the best places to visit near Ahmedabad.

Manek Chowk is a jewelry market during the day and turns into a street food market at night. The street market opens at 9 pm and starts bustling only after 11 pm. It closes at 2 am with a lot of families still loitering around the food stalls for that last yummy bite! Must-try food items in Manek chowk Ahmedabad include: Gwalior Dosa, Pav Bhaji, Pulav, Chocolate Pineapple sandwich, Chaats, Asharfilal Kulfi, etc.

Other than this, the Gujarati thali is a must-try while in Ahmedabad. Thali offers a variety of food items on one huge plate and is primarily vegetarian. Best time to visit Ahmedabad

The best time is certainly the winter months (November to February) as the summers tend to get uncomfortably hot even for the residents. From mid-March onwards, the summers creep in and the May temperature tends to hover around 45 degrees Celsius. Monsoons bring a respite in the temperature but still the humidity makes it difficult to travel.

Gir National Park

About 350 km away, one can easily reach Gir National park famous for the Asiatic lions. Start early morning to reach for the afternoon safari. Get blown away by the diversity of jungles in terms of plant and animal biodiversity. One can also visit the Jamjir waterfalls nearby and participate in cultural programs by watching the dance of the Siddi tribe.

You may combine this trip by visiting Somnath temple which is 70kms away. You can extend this trip to 3 days by stopping over in Junagadh and visiting  Asia’s longest Ropeway (cable car) – Girnar Ropeway. This is one of my personal favorite weekend getaways from Ahmedabad.

Only a three-hour drive on the way to Bhavnagar, the golden grasslands are a treat for birdwatchers too.

A weekend in Vadodara which is only 100 km away should not be brushed away. The next day visitors can go to Pavagadh and pay respect to the goddess Kali on top of the mountain either by climbing the 250 steps or by taking the ropeway to enjoy the view. Places to visit in Vadodara (Baroda)

Here is what makes Vadodara stand out amongst the other cities of Gujarat.

Lakshmi Vilas Palace Vadodara

The residence of the erstwhile ruler of Baroda – Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, Lakshmi Vilas Palace speaks grandeur, affluence and is the perfect showcase of luxury. This is one of the famous places in Vadodara that is must visit.

Built-in Indo-Gothic style of architecture, the palace is spread over 700 acres and is known to be four times larger than London’s Buckingham Palace. The palace has over 170 rooms and still serves as the residence of the Gaekwad family.

The palace is a sight to behold with its multicoloured marble, mosaic tiles, water fountains, chandeliers and paintings. There are artworks that are embedded with semi-precious stones and gold and walls with stained glass which is a classic example of opulence from that era. All of this overlooking a huge golf course. The Durbar Hall is the most exquisite place in the entire palace which often hosts music concerts and cultural events. Unfortunately, photography is prohibited inside the palace.

Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum in the same premises is the museum showcasing Gaekwad family’s art and artefacts collection.

Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery

The biggest attraction for me while visiting the Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery was the skeleton of a Blue Whale across a huge hall. As a kid, I used to get amused, excited and just in awe of the size of the museum. I would simply zoom past the collection of art, sculpture, ethnography and ethnology in the museum just to see this skeleton. And it was totally worth it!

Apart from the blue whale skeleton, the museum is also popular for an Egyptian mummy.

The building itself is a heritage building which is inspired by the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and is built in the Indo-Saracenic style. There are also exhibits on natural history and earth sciences.

The picture gallery contains a wide range of collections of textiles, paintings and miniatures. The museum library houses about 23,000 books on various subjects, most of which are rare. No wonder it is one of the best places to visit in Baroda.

Kirti Mandir

Every local knows Kirti Mandir as the place where the annual Rangoli exhibition takes place around Diwali. Kirti Mandir is an extremely popular landmark as well as an exhibition space with lovely gardens. 

Kirti Mandir as the name suggests is actually a temple. The area houses a cluster of temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and also houses the cenotaphs of the royal family.

The temple’s interiors are made of marble and decorated with intricately carved murals. One of the important murals within the premises are the five wall paintings showing various phases of the battle of Mahabharata, and some episodes from Indian mythology.

Khanderao Market

I remember early morning trips to the old city for buying vegetables in bulk.

Khanderao Market is the most vibrant vegetable market which comes to life at the crack of dawn. Vegetables, fruits, fresh flowers, puja materials and just about everything is available here in small shops. 

The entrance building itself is architecturally striking as it was gifted by the king to the people of the city on the silver jubilee of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III.

It consists of two domed shaped structures that resemble a Hindu temple with a clock tower in its centre. Part of the building also houses the office of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation.

Aurobindo Ashram Vadodara

While writing about Vadodara places to visit, I had to mention Aurobindo Ashram.

Vadodara houses the Aurobindo Ashram which is a community centre founded by the Indian freedom fighter, philosopher and yoga guru Aurobindo Ghose. The centre is perfect for meditation and yoga just like its counterpart in Pondicherry. This ashram served as the residence of Aurobindo Ghose during his stay in Baroda (1894 – 1906). Aurobindo Ashram Vadodara has a library, study room and sales emporium.

Sursagar Lake

Spending some time at Sursagar Lake is one of the best visiting places in Vadodara.

Sursagar has been one of the important landmarks of Vadodara since the beginning of time. It has been the centre of Ganesh Visarjan every year and it was at that time of the year when devotees came out in large numbers to pay their respects and bid adieu to the Elephant headed god in different sizes, shapes and colours and asking him to come early next year.

Sursagar has probably witnessed how the labyrinthine pols (lanes) gave way to roads, ancient bazaars paved the way to shopping malls and old-styled bungalows made space for apartments, over the years in Vadodara.

Formerly known as Chandan Talav, Sursagar was a small pond in the princely state of Baroda. The lake was rebuilt in the 18th century with stone banks and masonry which is when it was renamed Sursagar.

Sursagar is still one of the iconic structures which define Vadodara especially because of the installation of the 120-foot tall statue of Lord Shiva in the middle of this lake. Ganesh Visarjan is no longer permitted but there is a walkway around the lake and boating facility where one can spend time. The lake is lit on weekend evenings and the idol is lit on special festivals. 

If boating and walking make you hungry there are ample street food stalls around the lake periphery to indulge in some guilt-free snacking!

Sayaji Baug / Kamati Baug Vadodara

Being a Banyan city, not only are there a lot of trees but maintained gardens across the city. Sayaji Baug, locally known as Kamati Baug, is one of the top sights in Vadodara and one of the most popular places to visit in Vadodara. 

Spread over 100 acres, Kamati Baug is one of the biggest gardens in Western India. The garden houses, Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery, Amphitheatre, an aquarium, zoo, health museum, planetarium, a toy train and a flowerbed clock.

There are supposedly 96 species of trees in the perfectly manicured garden. The garden also has a kid’s area with swings and other toys.

Vadodara Planetarium

The Sardar Patel Planetarium is one of the unmissable places in Vadodara to visit. 

Nestled in Vadodara’s Sayaji Baug, the planetarium has a 200-seat capacity, which displays awe-striking videos of space. It has state-of-the-art sound systems and a curved projection screen that hosts shows in English, Gujarati & Hindi focusing on astronomical history.

Timings: 4.00 pm in Gujarati, 5.00 pm in English and 6.00 pm in Hindi

EME temple

While there are many beautiful temples in Vadodara city, this particular temple has been a favourite among the locals.

Also known as Dakshinamurti temple, EME stands for Electrical and Mechanical Corps and is situated in the Army Cantonment campus. It is not a typical temple structure which is why it is so popular. 

The temple is unique because of its geodesic design and is made from aluminium sheets.

The temple incorporates holy symbols from five major religions practised in India in its structure thus signifying secularism in the army. The Kalash on the top symbolises Hinduism, the Dome signifies Islam, the Tower represents Christianity, the Golden-structure above the tower expresses Buddhism and the Entrance stands for Jainism. 

The area around the temple has lovely manicured gardens and pathways with ancient statues.

Sevasi Vav

Located on the outskirts of the city, towards Sindhrot lies an offbeat gem – Sevasi Vav. Other than the Navlakhi Vav in Lakshmi Vilas Palace, I did not know that step wells existed in Vadodara!

It was a rare and amazing find on one of my recent trip to Vadodara and I instantly knew this had to be added to the list of places to visit in Vadodara.

Not in the best of condition, Sevasi vav is a seven-storey stepwell with a residing deity which is why it is clean. Constructed in a combination of brick masonry it has been standing strong for 500 years. Visitors can get a glimpse of carvings on the walls and pillars such as motifs, floral prints, bells, and animals.

Places to visit in Vadodara old city

While walls of the city have disappeared, the gates which defined its boundary still remain intact and house bustling bazaars.

Mandvi gate, Gendi gate, Laheripura gate, and Pani gate reflect a blend of Islamic and Maratha architecture.

Raopura clock tower

Also known as the Maharani Chimnabai tower, the Indo-Saracenic structure was built in 1896 in memory of Maharani Chimnabai, the first wife of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III. The clock was brought by the Maharaja from London and installed in a five-storey building with a clock facing all four directions on the 4th floor. The clock still works and chimes every hour. Raopura tower is lit up in the evenings.

Kirti Stambh

Kirti Stambh, translated as the Pillar of Triumph is a well-known landmark of Vadodara. It was built in the year 1935 to mark the 60 years of rule of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III. It is now situated on a traffic island located on an arterial road linking Lakshmi Vilas Palace gate to the city. The tower has a monolithic stone column having a seated lion facing towards the palace gate.

Tambekar Wada

Tambekar Wada is a typical Maratha style 3-storeyed building which was the former residence of Diwan of Baroda State – Vithal Khanderao Tambekar. The interior of the house is full of vibrant paintings, frescos and murals which decorate the walls, doors, and ceiling.

Festivals in Vadodara

Talking about things to do in Vadodara and not mentioning festivals is impossible!

Due to the cosmopolitan nature of the city, there are people residing from all states of India and all festivals are celebrated in equal fervour. Be it Ganesh Chaturthi, Holi, Chhath Puja, Durga Puja, Onam or Uttarayan. However, Vadodara is extremely popular for Navratri. Navratri in Vadodara is different from all the other cities where it is celebrated in its traditional form. United Way of Baroda and Maa Arkee organizes Navratri wherein over 100,000 participants dance to the same steps on the traditional song beats in traditional attires.

Shopping in Vadodara is amazing as it comfortably settled between the polyester manufacturing town of Surat and Cotton manufacturing town of Ahmedabad. Nava Bazaar

Nava Bazar is the one-stop-shop for all your Navratri needs! The shops come to life as soon as Ganesh Visarjan is over with a variety of festival merchandise. Chaniya Choli, Oxidized jewellery with fancy footwear is something not to be missed for shopping. While this bazaar is popular during Navratri, it is open all around the year and sells other Indian outfits.

Mangal Bazaar

The different alleys of Mangal Bazaar lead you to different kinds of markets. There are bylanes selling utensils, bags, outfits, toys, decorative lights and just about everything one can imagine. This is a one-stop for your household and utility needs. 

Baroda Prints

Baroda prints is a famous store in Vadodara which started almost 60 years ago and is now a brand in itself. The store sells fabrics and readymade garments with traditional block prints and it is one of the most preferred shopping destinations in Baroda.

Sindhrot

Sindhrot was a weekend getaway for most citizens. It offered a great drive amidst the forest to reach a bridge – Sindhrot bridge, build over the Mahi River. Having corn overlooking the sunset was a favourite time pass.

Sindhrot since then has a plethora of activities such – Kayaking, go-karting, nature trail, birdwatching, etc. There are a few hotels and cafes on the banks of Mahi that offer gorgeous views with food.

Pavagadh

Come rains and Vadodara residents run to Pavagadh to catch a glimpse of greenery and waterfalls. In other seasons too, Pavagadh offers a quick getaway for trekkers, nature enthusiasts and religious devotees. Pavagadh, a small hillock in the Panchmahal district is also the first place in Gujarat to install a ropeway. The second ropeway came up in Girnar –Asia’s longest ropeway.

Champaner

A stone’s throw away from Pavagadh is the UNESCO Heritage site of Champaner. This Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park is a 16th-century Hindu city with fortresses, temples, mosques & palaces. the sculptures engraved on the stones of the walls tell a tale of the bygone era.

Jambughoda Wildlife Sanctuary

Located 70 km away from Vadodara lies the famed Jambughoda wildlife sanctuary. It is an oasis of forest with wildlife and birds. A perfect weekend treat with nature.

Statue of Unity

The Statue of Unity is the world’s tallest statue and it is the statue of Shri Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Built as a memorial to the contributions of Sardar Vallabhbhai in the country’s freedom struggle and the stellar role he played in unifying the country into a nation.
