Out of all the things to do in Kerala, catching mist in Wayanad is a fun and relaxing way to enjoy this North Kerala gem. 

Whether you are on a Kerala road trip or a food journey across the state, or especially coming to Wayanad just to chill in a resort, Wayanad is on the list of all travellers.

Having been to Kerala 4 times over the years, North Kerala was unvisited, and I wanted to change that this time around. Thanks to Kerala Travel Mart 2024, I could finally tick off North Kerala and Wayanad off my list.

And while there are many things to do in Wayanad, relaxing in an amazing property is also a worthy trip. And that is exactly what I did at Great Trails Wayanad by GRT Hotels. 

ABOUT GREAT TRAILS WAYANAD BY GRT HOTELS

GRT Hotels & Resorts is a hospitality chain in South India, part of the larger GRT group. While they have many hotels and resorts in many cities, they have amazing properties in most tourist destinations in South India. While their hospitality is their signature, they are actively involved in sustainability initiatives, promoting practices like no plastic.

Wayanad property had opened only a few months back, and thanks to their partnership with KTM 2024, bloggers were invited to review it. So here’s my honest review about spending 1 day and 1 night at this beautiful property in Wayanad.

GREAT TRAILS WAYANAD BY GRT HOTELS REVIEW

From the winding main road, our driver took a left turn uphill. The sides were surrounded by tall trees as mist clung to them. A few meters ahead, the bus came to a halt.

As we got down from the bus, which was a rather long journey, happy and warm smiles welcomed us to the property.

A traditional welcome with kumkum tilak and a Great Trails-themed hand band made us feel right at home. A cold towel and brisk check-in later, we settled in the common area where we were served a blue pea tea and Unniyappam (sweet rice flour and banana dumplings). 

As we let the view from the property sink in, the property’s general manager, Ms Anu Shinoj, greeted us and invited us for some traditional chai and pakoras. Over the chai, she briefed us about the property and invited us for a tour.

The hotel boasts 16 Estate Villas with Balcony, 16 Estate Villas with Verandah and 10 Estate Bungalows. All the villas have colonial-style sit-outs and sloping wooden ceilings, offering stunning views of lush coffee plantations and sweeping valleys.

Each villa is spacious and furnished with extra-large beds, a sofa and a working table. All the bedrooms and bathrooms are fully equipped with contemporary comforts, creating a richly layered, luxurious atmosphere that feels like a sophisticated retreat.

I stayed at the Villa with a Balcony and there were fresh fruits with cutlery and jars with cookies and dry fruits.  The room featured a plush king-sized bed, a smart TV, and a coffee machine—everything needed for a comfortable stay. 

Whether it was sinking into the inviting bathtub after a day exploring Wayanad or enjoying a restful nap on the incredibly soft bed, Great Trails Wayanad by GRT clearly understands how to turn a stay into something special.

Augusta Heights, the restaurant at the hotel, serves up all sorts of Indian and International cuisine for all meals! There are enough vegetarian, non-vegetarian and vegan options for all guests. In case of any dietary requests, meals can be customised on request.

HOW TO REACH GREAT TRAILS WAYANAD

The hotel is located approximately 110 km from Kozhikode, which is the closest city with a railway station and an airport. From there, one must hire a private car to reach Wayanad. Great Trails Wayanad can arrange a pick-up from Kozhikode (110 km) or Kannur (104 km).

FINAL THOUGHTS ABOUT GREAT TRAILS WAYANAD BY GRT HOTELS

This was a short trip to Wayanad, and it was made extremely memorable and beautiful by the property.

My stay was truly relaxing and unforgettable, with every detail thoughtfully curated. The warm, welcoming staff were always happy to engage in a friendly conversation, and the cosy, stylish ambience made me feel instantly at home — a perfect example of exceptional hospitality.

The property strikes the perfect balance between comfort and sophistication, with delicious food that reflects the best of local and global cuisine. Even though my visit was short, the experience left a lasting impression. 

Based on my stay, I’d recommend Great Tails Wayanad as one of the top choices for luxury resorts in Wayanad. I would love to visit again for a longer duration.

McLeodganj, the idyllic town nestled in the Dhauladhar, offers stunning mountain views in every season. This guide covers all the places to visit in McLeodganj and Dharamshala.

My first visit to Mcleodganj was in 2016 when I was volunteering at Triund. But recently I revisited Mcleodganj along with Dharamshala and updated this post to include a few more places in both the towns as well as some day trip options!

ABOUT MCLEODGANJ

Thanks to its pristine location, Mcleodganj is a hub for tourists, adventure junkies, trekking enthusiasts, and Buddhist monks. The Dalai Lama and his Tibetan followers migrated to Dharamshala in 1959, and it has been their home ever since. The Dalai Lama now resides in McLeodganj, a town in the Dharamshala district.

Mcleodganj has since then gained spiritual importance. Just like Rishikesh, McLeodganj has also gained popularity for yoga and meditation camps and is one of the most popular places for tourism in Himachal Pradesh.

Also known as Little Lhasa, Mcleodganj has one of the most stunning landscapes in all seasons of the year. The snowy peaks are especially amazing in the spring. Also Read: Manali Travel Guide

PLACES TO VISIT IN MCLEODGANJ AND DHARAMSHALA

Dharamshala is like any other big city, but serves as an important gateway to the Dhauladhar mountain ranges. Dharamshala also has the most beautiful cricket stadium, and on a clear day, mountain peaks are visible from almost everywhere in the city.

While it is perfectly alright to do nothing in McLeodganj, in case you are visiting for a long weekend in McLeodganj, here are some of the things to do in McLeodganj and places to visit in McLeodganj and Dharamshala.

Tsuglagkhang temple complex, Mcleodganj

Tsuglagkhang temple is one of the major attractions in Mcleodganj not just for the Buddhist monks but also visitors. The complex includes Tsuglagkhang temple, the Namgyal Monastery, Tibetan Museum, a bookstore, a cafe, and a library, along with many shrine rooms having statues of Lord Gautam Buddha, Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), and Chenrezig (Avalokiteśvara).

Except for the Dalai Lama’s residence, visitors can visit other parts of the Tsuglagkhang temple complex. And you can meet the Dalai Lama if you are lucky! The temple is open from 5 am until 8 pm.

Namgyal Monastery, Mcleodganj

The Namgyal Monastery is a historic religious center, located next to the residence of the Dalai Lama within the Tsuglagkhang temple complex. The 16th-century Namgyal Monastery has Buddhist temples and prayer wheels inscribed with the mantra ‘Om mani padme hum’, a Tibetan verse.

Visitors can go around the monastery and witness the many activities happening all around.  When I visited the Namgyal Monastery, it was abuzz with decorations, food preparations, and monks chanting mantras, doing meditation, and performing ceremonies. The entire complex was bubbling with festive fervour. Later I came to know that the Dalai Lama was slated to visit the monastery the next day.

However, bookings were required for entry the next day and so I decided to pass and just soak in the positive and peaceful vibes from the place. From the highest point of the monastery, the snow peaks of the Dhauladhar range were clearly visible. The entire complex is full of lush green environs with trees. In spite of being on the main market road, once inside the complex, it is extremely peaceful.

Visitors are allowed to meditate anywhere in the complex. Entry to the monastery is free and the opening hours are from 9 am to 6 pm daily.  Note: As of December 2020, the monastery is temporarily closed due to Covid-19. Kindly check before your arrival.

Trekking the Triund Hill

Thanks to the beautiful mountain ranges around Mcleodganj, there are options for treks in Dhauladhar. Triund happens to be one of the topmost choices of trekking in Mcleodganj.

Although closed during the heavy snow season, Triund remains open throughout the year and at all times of the day. Triund is popular for one-day treks as well as overnight camping. Located at a height of 9350 feet (2850 meters) the entire trekking path offers gorgeous views of the mountains. It looks especially breathtaking in spring with the rhododendron in full bloom.

Triund rhododendron trek is a must-do! With steep ascents and rocky sub-trails, this 9km long trek rewards visitors with the most stunning views. A clear day will certainly make you fall in love with the mountains, with snow peaking and the sun caressing the valleys.  Camping is possible here if you carry your tents or if you go with local guides.

The only downside of this trek is the absence of toilets at the peak. There is one shop midway and one at the top which serves packet food, Maggi and chai.  There is also a possibility to volunteer with a local NGO and go on clean-up hikes on Triund. Volunteers can accompany the NGO staff which conducts the clean-up hike at Triund every Monday.

The trash is picked up through the entire trekking trail and collected at the mountain top. The trash is sent to Mcleodganj town on mules and further sent for recycling. Talk about plogging done right!  If you love trekking and have strength, ability, and time on hand, you can further trek to Snowline at 10,800 feet. Snowline trek is 2km further than Triund and has steeper ascents than Triund.

If you are camping in Triund overnight, Snowline can be covered the next day, and one can trek back on day 2. It is also possible to camp at Snowline, which also has a snowline cafe. I will highly recommend taking a guide along for the snowline, especially in winter.

Bhagsunath Temple and Bhagsu Falls

A small trek near Dharamkot leads to the Bhagsunath temple and Bhagsu waterfalls. It is one of the most popular places to visit in Mcleodganj and Dharamshala. Located at a height of 5,807 feet, the ancient temple was built by King Bhagsu and dedicated to Lord Shiva and the Snake God – ‘Nag Devta’. If you are staying in Mcleodganj town, Dharamkot can be easily reached on foot and will take 20 minutes.

According to legends, King Bhagsu came to the glaciers in search of water. He was challenged by the Snake God, who was the resident of this region. In the ensuing battle, the King was defeated; however, his plea for water to his fraternity was granted, and the place came to be known as Bhagsunath. The temple attracts a huge number of believers and tourists throughout the year.

Surrounded by freshwater springs and green areas, the springs are said to be sacred and hold healing powers and medicinal properties. The trek to the falls is quite challenging due to the steep ascent, but the views from the top are worth it. Visitors can say their prayers and then take a dip in the adjacent pool.  Walk to the Bhagsu falls nearby and soak in the beauty of nature around.

Bhagsu Falls is one of the most popular Mcleodganj Tourism places so it is extremely crowded at all times. One can take a dive in the bone-chillingly cold water, follow it by relaxing on the rocks and soaking up some rays and panoramic views from the top.

Shiva Cafe at the top of Bhagsu waterfall is extremely popular, and you just cannot go to Bhagsu and not visit Shiva Cafe and post Instagram stories about it. But be patient to get a seat here, especially in the afternoons and weekends.

Dharamkot

A little away from Mcleodganj town, there is a different world altogether. Dharamkot, situated 2 km away, is a cute little village that offers yoga and spiritual retreats. On the crest of a hill above McLeodGanj, Dharamkot quietly enjoys the panoramic views of the Kangra Valley and the Dhauladhar ranges.

Dharamkot has the famous Tushita Meditation Centre, which is a centre for the study and practice of Buddhism in the Tibetan Mahayana tradition, the Vipassana Meditation Centre, and the Dhamma Shikara.  The village is closer to Triund trek and Bhagsu waterfalls, and much peaceful than Mcleodganj, which is why it is a preferred place for accommodation for many backpackers.

Dharamkot also has many homestays and hostel options, which are cheaper than Mcleodganj town. If you have a car, it needs to be parked at Dharamkot square and carry the luggage by your own.

Dal Lake

Yes, there is a Dal lake in Mcleodganj! Located near the village of Tota Rani, the lake is 4k away from Mcleodganj. Probably 1/100th the size of the actual one, Dal Lake Mcleodganj is a small lake that is surrounded by deodar trees. It has a Lord Shiva temple on its bank. The lake is a good tourist spot for families who want to enjoy some boating. Kids can especially enjoy boating as there are many varieties of fish.

Kangra Fort

Located at a distance of 28 km from Mcleodganj, the 4th-century fort is one of the oldest forts in the country and the biggest fort in the Himalayas. Kangra Fort is the 8th largest fort in India  – covering an area of 463 acres. It was built by Maharaja Susharma Chandra, a descendant of the Katoch dynasty, the oldest living dynasties.

Despite over 50 invasions, it still stands tall after a lot of centuries. The Kangra Fort lies on a patch of land between the Manjhi and Banganga rivers and offers prominent views of the Kangra valley in all four directions. The fort boasts 11 gates, 23 bastions, alleyways, vast courtyards, and ancient temples within its premises.

The highest point is occupied by the palace courtyard, below which there is a large courtyard containing the stone-carved temples of Laxmi Narayan, Ambika Devi, and the Jain Temple Visitors can get a detailed understanding of the fort by visiting the Maharaja Sansar Chand Katoch Museum, situated right next to the fort.

Visiting the Kangra Fort from Mcleodganj will easily consume half the day. The fort itself will require 2-3 hours. So it is best to plan accordingly. Just near the car park, there was a small shop called ‘ Anand tea stall’ serving refreshments. I was too tempted by the lady making aloo parathas and decided to try one. I ended up hogging many. It was too delicious, especially after that trek!

Naddi View Point

Trekking to Naddi is another option while in Mcleodganj. Situated 3km from the central town, Naddi is a small village that offers breathtaking views of the mighty Dhauladhar mountains and the vast expanse of Kangra valley. Just like Dharamkot, this village offers many homestays for the peace-loving crowds who want to curl up with the mountain views.

Naddi viewpoint or Naddi sunset viewpoint is one of the best places to visit in Mcleodganj and Dharamshala. By following the directions from the main roads, one ends up on a non-tar road with a signboard ‘Naddi viewpoint’.

One needs to cross a few street-side vendors to come to a point where telescopes are installed. And the view is just breathtaking! I visited on a cloudy evening so I could not witness the sunset but nevertheless, the views were amazing.

Church of St. Johns

The 19th-century neo-Gothic architectural marvel is the Church of St Jones in a forest, which is why it is called St John’s church in the wilderness. Built by the Britishers for the troops and families, the area around also serves as the final resting place of Lord Ergin, governor-general and viceroy of India during the British Raj.  Constructed of hand-cut granite, it is one of the only buildings which remained after the 1905 earthquake.

HPCA Stadium

Whether you love cricket or not, you cannot not visit HPCA Stadium if you are visiting Dharamshala. It is one of the best places to visit in Dharamshala and Mcleodganj.

HPCA stands for Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium and is the highest altitude cricket stadium in the world. It overlooks the beautiful Dhauladhar range from the seating area, making it one of the best places to view cricket matches with a view.

Visitors can enter the stadium from Gate No. 5. Just ensure that there are no matches scheduled on the day you plan to visit.

War Memorial, Dharamshala

The War Memorial in Dharamshala stands as a moving tribute to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the 1947–48 battles, the Indo-China War of 1962, the wars of 1965 and 1971, and various UN Peacekeeping missions. Dominated by three striking black stone panels, each rising 24 feet high, this solemn site honours their unwavering courage and heroism.

Around the memorial is a well-maintained, manicured garden with animal statues. A quick visit can be done while on the way to Mcleodganj.

Tea Gardens in Dharamshala

I did not know tea gardens existed in Dharamshala until my second visit, recently! Narghota Tea Estate and Factory, located 2km away from the War Memorial, is an amazing place to spend the evening and click photos.

Since I have visited tea factories in Manas, Munnar and Kandy I decided to skip the factory visit here and just take a walk around the tea gardens on one side of the narrow road and the mountains on the other side.

Norbulingka Institute of Tibetan Culture

A beautiful place tucked away in a corner of Dharamshala, Norbulingka Institute is a great way to spend a peaceful afternoon.

During my recent visit to Norbulingka, I was impressed by their commitment to preserving Tibetan art through sustainable practices. Guided by master artisans, the institute empowers a community of over 300 Tibetans by passing down age-old techniques and traditions in painting, woodwork work and traditional clothing.

I saw firsthand the incredible craftsmanship and the living legacy of Tibetan culture. It’s an experience I’d highly recommend to anyone with an appreciation for art and heritage. Visitors can enrol in some of the art workshops that take place here.

The campus has a monastery and a losel doll museum, which is extremely beautiful. There is a cafe, restaurant and a momo joint which ensures visitors have a good time to sit, relax and take in the atmosphere.

There are 10 guestrooms available, too, where visitors can stay overnight.

PLACES TO VISIT NEAR MCLEODGANJ AND DHARAMSHALA

Bir

Popular as one of the best places for paragliding in India, the hills in Bir-Billing have a perfect place for lift-off and glide without obstructions. Many adventure enthusiasts travel to Bir-Billing only for this sport.

Even novices can try their first flight off if you are not scared on heights and get that adrenaline pumping! The cost of each flight per person varies between INR 5000 – 15000, which depends on the length of the flight. The package includes a GoPro video, safety gear, an instructor, and transfer to the take-off point.

Palampur

Palampur is famous for its tea garden and beautiful views. With homestays scattered across the town, chilling here is what makes Palampur a good choice amongst tourists. One can drive to Palampur and be back from Dharamshala.

Shaktipeeth Temples

Himachal Pradesh is blessed with 5 shaktipeeth temples, namely –  Jwalaji, Chintpurni Devi, Naina Devi, Brajeshwari Devi, and Chamunda Devi. These temples are popular pilgrimage sites dedicated to different forms of the goddess Durga. 

Tourists can easily cover any 3 temples in a day and feel blessed.

SHOPPING IN MCLEODGANJ AND DHARAMSHALA

Shopping is a retail therapy in Mcleodganj. With an array of things to buy in Mcleodganj and souvenirs from Mcleodganj, the options are many. From Thangka paintings to Tibetan carpets, from jewellery to artefacts, handicrafts to books, from cakes to winter wear, the options are unending on what to buy in Mcleodganj.

One of the main places to visit in McLeodganj is the Main Market. The entire street and around is lined with shops. There are plenty of bakeries and small restaurants around,d too. It is best to explore them on foot so as not to miss out on quaint cafes and cute stores.

If you want to buy affordable souvenirs from Mcleodganj as gifts for your friends, I will suggest picking up Buddhist prayer flags, beaded jewellery, yak mittens, or shawl.

WHAT TO EAT (AND WHERE) IN MCLEODGANJ | CAFES IN MCLEODGANJ

With a lot of Tibetan influence, the entire town of Mcleodganj has many options of Momos and Thukpa. Since there are a lot of visitors from European countries, Mcleodganj cuisine offers a lot of continental dishes such as pizzas, lasagnas, pasta, pancakes, hummus, and Shakshuka. The bakeries are amazing as well and have delicious cakes, cheesecakes, and croissants. Being a spiritual town, many cafes and restaurants are offering vegan menus in addition to vegetarian options.

Momos in Mcleodganj

Momos are Tibetan dumplings that are usually stuffed with pork, chicken, or veggies. They are served with red chilli chutney. There are way too many restaurants and street vendors selling momos in Mcleodganj, and it is hard to pick one place which is the best. I tried momos in Trek N Dine in Dharamkot and a couple of street vendors (vegetarian versions), and all were great.

Bhagsu Cake

The best dessert has to be a local one! Bhagsu cake is a crunchy pie crust, layered with sticky caramel toffee sauce and topped with dark chocolate or white chocolate. It had this cake in Moonlight Cafe in Dharamkot.  Check out this detailed Food guide to cafes and restaurants in Mcleodganj.

BEST TIME TO VISIT MCLEODGANJ AND DHARAMSHALA

According to me, the best time to visit Mcleodganj is spring, between March and April. The weather is not too hot or cold for treks. There is still snow on mountain peaks, and the nip in the air is perfect for walking around without wrapping too many layers. The rhododendrons are in full bloom, which looks extremely pretty around the town.  Summers are also pleasant to visit Mcleodganj with maximum temperatures hovering at 30°C. But if you want to witness the snow, then winter is ideal. Storms are not quite common here as the region receives heavy rain annually. It is best to avoid July and August due to the heavy rainfall.

HOW TO REACH MCLEODGANJ AND DHARAMSHALA

By air

The nearest airport to Mcleodganj is Kangra Gaggal Airport, also called Dharamshala airport. It is located at a distance of 20 km from McLeodganj. Private cabs can be booked from the airport to reach Mcleodganj.

By Train 

The closest railway station to Mcleodganj is in Pathankot. Trains from the south and north stop here.  There are two options to reach Mcleodganj from Pathankot – take a taxi or a public bus to Mcleodganj. The taxi takes around 1.5 hours, depending on the traffic, and the buses take 3 to 4 hours since they stop at many villages to pick and drop people.

Private buses of all kinds (air-conditioned, Volvo, sleeper, semi-sleeper) leave from Delhi (Majnu ka Tilla, Kashmiri gate) for Mcleodganj. It is an overnight comfortable journey of 10-12 hours. They drop at the Mcleodganj bus stand.

Bike rent in Mcleodganj

It is possible to rent bikes in Mcleodganj. There are many local shops in the main market which offer these services. Visitors also have the option to rent a 2-wheeler from many rental vendors in the city. The vendors drop the vehicle at your hotel and pick it up. The rent range is between INR 300-500 per day.

Bandhavgarh National Park is a sought-after Tiger Reserve in the state of Madhya Pradesh in India. One of the most popular parks in the country, it has attracted naturalists, photographers, and international wildlife documentary filmmakers.

While tiger safari in Bandhavgarh is famous due to the highest density of Royal Bengal Tigers, it is equally a haven for other wildlife such as Indian bison, Sloth bears, Leopards, many types of deer and bird diversity.

Having been to other tiger reserves in Madhya Pradesh, such as – Kanha, Pench and Satpura – I was super excited for Bandhavgarh as it was my first time there.

WHY CHOOSE BANDHAVGARH?

Once the hunting grounds of the Maharaja of Rewa, it is now a significant sanctuary for wildlife. Bandhavgarh National Park is nestled in the Vindhya Hills of Madhya Pradesh, covering an area of over 1100 sq km. The park is divided in 3 core zones – Tala, Magadhi and Khitauli and 3 buffer zones – Dhamokhar, Johila and Panpatha. Each zone has a distinct landscape, offering a unique setting for wildlife.

The park’s diverse landscape features steep ridges, forested valleys, grassy swamps and open meadows, interspersed with the Bandhavgarh Fort, creating a stunning natural habitat.

It is also closer to various other tourist sights, such as the Bhedaghat and Khajuraho temples.

KING’s LODGE BANDHAVGARH REVIEW

A long drive awaited after reaching Jabalpur airport. I was already dreading the city traffic, but almost immediately out of the airport, our driver, Izhar suggested if he could use a short-cut through a village to avoid the city roads. We were more than happy as he went to inform us that we would save 30 minutes of driving time!

The 3.5-hour drive was mostly smooth and made beautiful thanks to the blooming Palash flowers (Flame of the Forest). On crossing Umaria town, the Sal forests were visible on both sides – that meant we were close!

Glued to our window panes for any movement, we came across a herd of spotted deer. Aah, the feeling of being in the wilderness! The double-laned national highway then narrowed down to one lane, and the speed limit went down. We were even close!

We crossed the entry gates of all the core zones and later, a right turn brought us to the property. We were heartily welcomed by the staff at the lodge.

We were seated in the library with a projection room that doubles as a hi-tea room. Welcome drinks, along with a cold face towel, immediately made us feel at home. The lodge manager, Mr Yash requested a briefing session to explain about the property and even brought us gifts – refillable steel water bottles.

Here is all the information he shared and I came to know in the 3 days that I stayed.

Rooms at King’s Lodge Bandhavagarh

King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh features 18 spacious and well-appointed cottages that are designed keeping in mind the needs and comforts of the modern traveller. The cottages are in between a bamboo forest ensuring privacy and views to each unit. Cottages are lined with cow dung and hay – an ancient Indian practice for regulating interior temperatures. Since the temperatures can be extreme in Bandhavgarh, these practices ensure a comfortable temperature within the room.

Each unit of the beautifully designed cottage has a king-size bed, a contemporary ensuite bathroom and private viewing decks.

All rooms also have a tea and coffee maker with home-made cookies, areas to stow the luggage and a safety locker. Minimal yet rustic decor, beds with cozy mattresses, and ambient lighting add to the comfort and make you feel right at home. Lounge in the verandah of your cottage while getting engulfed in the sweet voices of countless birds.

Sustainability, Indian biodiversity and wildlife is reflected in every corner of the room and common spaces. The common areas have furniture using the local Sal trees and the door and handles have a wildlife element to them. The property wants the guests to enjoy the wilderness so much so that there is no TV and phone network in the rooms. However, there is wi-fi across the property that ensures you can share awesome wildlife pictures with your family and friends.

There is no in-room service and all meals are served in dedicated areas around the reception.

Being a sustainable property, drinking water is served in refillable steel bottles. The water is safe to consume as it is filtered RO water! The water is refilled several times a day and you will never have to request for it.

Culinary Delights

The menu is curated keeping the domestic and international guests in mind. The menu uses local ingredients from local vendors. The raw materials and ingredients used are sourced from local farmers and markets. And the food served gives an authentic taste of cuisine that is popular in the villages of Madhya Pradesh as well as global dishes.

King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh takes pride in not using and serving frozen food or spices. The executive chef will share the menu and ask for your preferred meal, especially for dinner. The meals are divided in 2 categories – Indian and Global, with enough options for vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.

Breakfast and lunch are served in the dining room, while dinner is an explicit affair at an outdoor sitting area. Cocktails and dinner are served in an open farmland where the chefs cook many live dishes on barbeque, and it is a perfect setting to meet other guests staying in the hotel and discuss the wildlife sightings of the day! There are bonfires lit in the area, ensuring you are warm while you sip your cold beer.

On many occasions a tribal dance is arranged here which is part of evening entertainment and also gives a slice of local culture. On one of the days that we were there, we watched the Baiga Tribe performing their festival dance, watched a cricket final match and on one  there was a wildlife documentary screening.

On-the-go safari Breakfast

Safari breakfasts are special. Imagine roughing it out in the cold wind for hours, trying to sight the big cats and then stopping in one of the jungle pit-stop areas where you are served hot beverages, samosas wrapped in Sal leaves, sandwiches, vegetable cutlets, fresh fruits, juice, cakes and other delicious snacks. It cannot get better than this!

King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh organizes breakfast on the go so that you are never hungry on a safari. The vehicles stop at jungle centre points that are designated breakfast points. The vehicle driver and guide set up a picnic basket and one can have a hearty meal amid the forest.

Beware of sparrows and monkeys who may try to snatch the yummy breakfast from your hands.

Swimming Pool

Near the reception of the property, there’s a small swimming pool where you can cool off after the game drive. King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh has a pool overlooking their organic garden and surrounded by greenery. Cool off and enjoy your holiday with a splash at the swimming pool. 

Library

If you have leisure time at hand then head to the in-house library that is ambient and beautifully styled with a number of books on wildlife and general reading. The library turns into a video room in the evening, where several documentary screenings take place.

Spa

After a long day out in the park, there is nothing more relaxing than a massage. Especially a full-day safari! Your body will thank you for the array of massages that are offered here  including ayurvedic massage, reflexology, Indian head massage and other range of full-body treatments.

Spa needs to be booked in advance so that the lodge can arrange the masseuse. 

Nature trail and Cycling tours

King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh arranges nature trail in and around the property with an expert naturalist. Since the property borders the Tala zone, there are birds to give you company. The walks are usually aimed at finding smaller things in the park like insects, butterflies, tracks and signs, birds, plants and other things that one would miss in a jeep. However, if luck is on your side, you might catch a glimpse of curious eyes peering back at you, belonging to one of the many hidden residents of the wild.

As the sun dips below the horizon, watch the forest prepare for a peaceful night’s rest. And as the moon rises over the clearing, carry home a heart full of memories—ones that will linger in your dreams long after you leave.

I suggest guests have atleast one free evening (parks are closed on Wednesday afternoon) to take up these walking tours.

Village Walks

You can experience the raw beauty of the surrounding village that borders the forests and listen to the tales of locals – how they have been living with the wildlife for centuries.

Immerse yourself in the lives of the local community, where many are skilled artisans. Share a meal or gain valuable insights from the indigenous tribes, such as the Baiga, who have lived in harmony with the forests for generations.

Sundowner

Who said one has to rough it out during a safari vacation? King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh ensures that you have a good time in between and after the safaris. Looking for an intimate dinner with your partner? Consider it done – with bush dinner and sundowner at exotic locales around the property. 

Sundowner is arranged near a pond where drinks and snacks await, overlooking the setting sun. However, in March 2025 when I visited, the activity was temporarily closed due to Sloth Bear movement in the area.

Tribal Dance

The property invites the community members of the local tribe, the Baiga, who entertain the guests with their festive dances and singing. This one hour of dance session is refreshing as you sip a local mahua cocktail while the bonfire warms you. 

Guests can join the dance and enjoy themselves with the tribe. 

Nature Shop

Take a bit of King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh with you with the souvenirs from nature shop. There are t-shirts, jackets, hats and caps that can be purchased. Other things include paintings and jewellery made by the Baiga tribe.

I picked some beautiful jewellery and my husband picked up a hat.

SUSTAINABILITY AT KING’S LODGE BANDHVAGRAH

The Pugdundee Safaris group is conscious of the environment and has inculcated many sustainable values in all of its hotels. Inspite of being in the jungle and away from many resources, the lodge practices sustainability! Some of the initiatives include the type of construction, no plastic policy, local employment, and others. Let us look at them in detail.

• The property has used sustainable materials throughout and has also added cod dung to the exterior to give a very rustic look. The dung along with hay cools the interiors – a practice from the Indian culture.
• The property has a strict no plastic waste policy. The guests are gifted stainless steel bottles upon check-in and encouraged to use them. There are RO water refilling stations in various areas, and the rooms also have steel bottles wherein the water gets refilled multiple times. 
• King’s Lodge, nestled in Rancha village, offers a captivating immersion into local rural life. Guests can visit the villages or the community members come to the property for dance performances, local cooking or selling jewellery.
• In common areas, instead of hand tissues, the lodge uses washable and reusable cotton napkins in the common bathroom.
• There is a solar panel at property that produces energy.
• The food is grown organically or purchased from a local vendor. Everything used in the kitchen is freshly prepared – they take pride in not serving frozen food, food that is exotic or non-seasonal. All of this makes the food taste amazing!

HOW TO REACH KING’S LODGE BANDHAVGARH

By flight

Bandhavgarh can easily be reached by air from all major cities in India including Delhi and Mumbai. Jabalpur is the closest airport to Bandhavgarh and is about a 4-hour road drive and flights from 4 cities operate here everyday – Indore, Bhopal, Mumbai and Delhi.

Khajuraho airport is 5 hours away and also a convenient airport specially when combining this beautiful temple town in your travels with Bandhavgarh.

By train

Umaria is the closest railway station (1 hour) followed by Katni (2 hours) and Jabalpur (4 hours), to reach King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh.

Katni is another major railway junction with trains coming from all parts of the country, including Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Kolkotta.

FINAL THOUGHTS ABOUT KING’S LODGE BANDHAVGARH REVIEW

During my stay at King’s Lodge, I enjoyed a perfect blend of wildlife, culture and relaxation. The hospitality and meticulous attention to detail stood out during my brief visit. Nestled amidst the lush forest, the lodge offered a much-required tranquil retreat where nature and comfort coexist. We woke up to the melody of birds, set out on exhilarating jungle safaris to spot majestic tigers, and unwound with breathtaking sunsets over the forest canopy. The staff, manager and naturalists of the lodge are lovely people and one can easily strike a conversation with them.. The warm hospitality guarantees my desire to return for another stay.

Rishikesh is even more special as it is nestled along the banks of the holy river Ganga at the foothills of the Himalayas.

While all the places to visit in Rishikesh can be covered within 2 days, a yoga retreat for a month may seem like a short time for others.

Best Things to Do in Rishikesh

There is no dearth of amazing places to visit in Rishikesh, and visitors can plan these activities to do in Rishikesh depending on their time availability!

Walk on the Ram Jhula and Lakshman Jhula

Jhula can be translated as Bridge and Laksham Jhula is one of the most popular attractions in Rishikesh.

Ram Jhula and Lakshman Jhula are huge iron suspension bridges over the river Ganga. The names of bridges are based on Indian mythology and are named after Lord Ram and his brother Lakshman, who had crossed the river through this bridge. 

Both bridges are pedestrian bridges, but two-wheelers are allowed to pass through. It makes it a bit congested to walk, but nevertheless, do it. The view of flowing water from the bridge is mesmerising

Chill at the banks of the Ganga River in Rishikesh

This was my favourite activity to do as I stole moments from my work schedule during the morning and evening to simply walk over the rocks on the banks and sit by the calming waters of the Ganga.

There is something unique and soothing about the waters that truly calms the body and mind – maybe it is the cold water touching your feet, or maybe the rippling sound of water over the rocks or the sound of bells from a nearby temple aarti.

The whole thing just works, and you will find a lot of people meditating on the banks.

Learn Yoga in Rishikesh

Whenever someone says Yoga in India, the first place that comes to mind is Rishikesh.

Yoga and Rishikesh go hand in hand, quite literally. So, there is a high possibility of getting overwhelmed by seeing posters and banners on literally every street and corner advertising the best yoga course.

There is also a chance that the hotel you are staying at will have an early yoga/meditation class. But let’s face it, Rishikesh is not called a yoga capital for no reason!

There are 1-day classes, and then there are courses spanning weeks and months. Hatha Yoga is the most popular yoga type in Rishikesh. Other than that, Kundalini and Vinyasa yoga are also the preferred choices by visitors. Visitors can also enrol for Yoga Teacher Training in Rishikesh.

If you are in Rishikesh for a weekend or a short while and want to learn yoga, the best option is to take up the class which is generally offered by your hotel/hostel. If you wish to go to a professional class or to an ashram, the cost is Rs. 200-300 for 90 90-minute duration.

Enrol in various courses in Rishikesh

Other than yoga, there are many kinds of courses up for grabs, such as meditation, body massage, aromatherapy, breathing course, nutrition, Ayurveda, singing, music, Indian cooking, and many more! If you have the time and enthusiasm, I say go for it.

Bungee Jumping in Rishikesh

Rishikesh has India’s highest Bungee Jumping platform at a height of 83 metres, which is located just outside Rishikesh. This one is for all the adrenaline junkies who have waited for a long to have this thrill in India. The jump needs to be pre-booked, and visitors should keep aside a day for this, as the to-and-fro transfer would easily take up 5-6 hours.

Camping in Rishikesh

Camping in Rishikesh along the Ganga River is an extremely popular activity. Camping can be combined with white water rafting, and many camps are offering 1N2D packages with strict environmental measures.

Experience nature and wildlife in Rajaji National Park

If you are a wildlife enthusiast like me who tries to find every possible opportunity to spot wildlife parks on every work trip, then Rishikesh will not disappoint. If you fancy trying to spot some wildlife, including Tigers, whilst in Rishikesh, then get booked onto a Jungle Safari! 

Unlike other national parks, Rajaji National Park does not require booking, and the tickets can be purchased from the gate. Like all national parks, it is closed from 15th June to 15th October, and the safari is done in an open jeep vehicle. The duration of the safari is the standard of 3 hours.

Though claimed to spot tigers, there have been few instances of actually spotting one! However, Elephants, Spotted Deer, Sambhar, Wild Boar, Barking deer, Goral, Himalayan Black Bear and Sloth Bear are some of the wildlife that can be seen here!

White Water River Rafting in Rishikesh

Probably one of the top things to do in Rishikesh, white water rafting in Rishikesh is not to be missed! I did white water rafting in Goa, and it was an amazing experience. I wanted to try it in Rishikesh, probably combining it with camping.

There are many adventure enthusiasts who go to Rishikesh just for White water rafting specifically. Rafting rapids in Rishikesh are distributed under various grades (I, II, III, IV and IV+), which are the highest in India and the most adventurous.

Ganga Aarti in Rishikesh

Ganga aarti in Rishikesh happens at the Parmarth Niketan Ashram after the Ram Jhula Bridge.

It is unlike what happens in Haridwar with big diyas, which are nothing less than mesmerising. So I was a bit disappointed with the Rishikesh aarti, where there was some chanting and people left their diyas in the river.

There is a Lord Shankar statue which has a bridge, and visitors can go on top of this and watch the aarti from here.

Kunjapuri Temple Sunrise

I love trekking and I love sunrises! Combine the two at Kunjapuri temple to witness a stunning sunrise overlooking the Himalayan mountains and an even more incredible view of the glistening Ganga river.

Kunjapuri temple sunrise is one of the offbeat things to do in Rishikesh. It is approximately 25km away and an easy walk, so one has to wake up super early and start by 4:30 am to reach the sunrise point. There are group tours to the sunrise point with transportation, or you can even take a car if you are too lazy to trek. 

Drench in the Neergarh Waterfall

Neergarh waterfall in Rishikesh, also known as ‘Neer Gaddu’, is a lovely waterfall, situated about 7 km from Lakshman Jhula. The trek through the misty forests sets the scene and makes the adventure all the more worthwhile. Be careful, as there are monkeys on the trail.

The crystal blue colour of the pool is soothing, and the cold water is super refreshing after the one-hour trek! Yes, swimming or bathing is possible and allowed here, but since the pool is shallow, diving and jumping are not allowed. 

Birds and Butterflies will be seen on the trail, and wildflowers will be in bloom, adding beauty to this wonderful spot. There’s also a rich variety of flowers and trees for real nature lovers.

Water, soft drinks, noodles and tea are available at Neergarh Waterfall from a small tin shack across the bridge.

Explore the Beatles Ashram

Shopping in Rishikesh

Whether it is a souvenir, woollen clothes and shawls or ayurvedic products, Rishikesh shopping is fun. Must buy from Rishikesh includes essential oils, natural beauty products, candles and mountain fruit squash – Ramphal juice, Rhododendron juice, Leh berry juice and others! I shopped for some Rajma (kidney beans) as they grow in these mountainous areas and are so yummy and cheaper than in the cities!

Best Places to Eat in Rishikesh | Best Cafes in Rishikesh

Rishikesh is abundant in cafes and restaurants offering good, healthy food. Be aware that since it is a holy place, you will not find non-vegetarian food or alcohol here. However, there are plenty of Vegetarian and Vegan options at a great price! The following places were highly recommended.

Little Buddha Cafe

So many people recommended I visit this when I asked on my Instagram stories, so I just had to check this out. I went for dinner and it was jam-packed. And 2 of my colleagues got a table here after 45 minutes of waiting. I bet the view from here must be great, as I could hear the Ganga waters rippling in the distance. 

I tried the watermelon juice and thukpa on a friend’s suggestion and both were good!

Ganga View Cafe 

As the name suggests, it has a fantastic view of the Ganga from its balcony. A few meters from Lakshman Jhula, it is known for its multi-cuisine food.

Other great cafes are Shambala for live music, The Beatles Cafe – I rest my case, The Bakeries and TAT cafe.

Where to Stay in Rishikesh

It is best to choose a place in the north of Rishikesh that is near the Lakshman Jhula as everything is within walking distance. There are many options to choose from – hotels, hostels and even ashrams.

Hotels in Rishikesh

Hotels are abundant in Rishikesh. Kunwar Residency is a good-budget hotel. Hotel Ishan provides spectacular river views.

Guest House in Rishikesh

I stayed with the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) as I was on a work trip. It is also called the Ganga Resort. The view from my balcony was breathtaking, and I simply crossed the guesthouse wall to soak my feet in the icy cold Ganga water. It is as good as a hotel and very cosy, and clean, with homely food. The price is on the higher side as it is a government guest house.

There are many guest houses which do not book online. They may reserve a room on the phone in the offseason, but it is best to just go and book in person with luggage. Generally, the rooms are basic but available. 

Hostels in Rishikesh

There are a lot of good hostels in Rishikesh. Shiv Shakti Hostel, Live Free Hostel, and hostel chains such as Hosteller and Zostel Rishikesh are also good options.

Ashrams in Rishikesh

Rishikesh has a lot of Ashrams wherein one can stay for a longer duration, especially if you have enrolled for yoga courses. Ashrams in Rishikesh offer a one-week package which includes daily yoga, activities and meals. It is best if you are looking to detoxify as the good meals, silence, meditation and yoga, will be soulful for the mind and body.

Sivananda Ashram, The Omkarananda Ashram, Parmarth Niketan Ashram are some of the recommended ones.

A popular weekend destination from Mumbai and Pune, Sula offers a lot of things to do, see or relax. I always wondered if ‘Is Sula Vineyards worth the visit’ and I thought to give it a try.

The popularity of Sula fest over the years has made everyone think about visiting Sula at least once! 

A popular destination from Nashik, it is visited by wine connoisseurs as well as tourists who want to look at a grape farm (vineyard) or grab a bite at their restaurant.

In this post, I talk about the winemaking and its history but most importantly, I share my review of the Sula Vineyards tours and tasting and try to answer the question – Is Sula Vineyards worth the visit? 

ALL ABOUT SULA VINEYARDS

Sula Vineyards is the top wine producer in India and has the most accessible winery. From humble beginnings in 1997, Sula Vineyards has admirably developed into a world-class winery with boutique guest accommodations. The winery is open to visitors, who can enjoy a tour, tastings, courses, and fun events. With 2 major wineries in the countries, Nashik is the smaller one but still unique enough of an operation to not feel too commercial but large enough to provide visitors with an awesome tour and tasting.

Best time to visit Sula Vineyards

Sula is open all year, Monday to Sunday, and there are several activities every day. The grape season is from January to March and hence it is the best time to see them grow in the vineyard and observe it’s process. That is also the reason why Sula fest is conducted in February every year. Sula Fest take place on the first weekend of every February.

Reaching Sula Vineyards from Nashik

The winery is located on the outskirts of Nashik, and takes about 30 minutes to reach. It is conveniently located 4 hours each from Mumbai and Pune and thus is a happening weekend destination and makes Sula Vineyards worth the visit.

The tasting, of course, is the most exciting part of the tour. Wine etiquette like temperature, smell, swirl and combination food are discussed in the Tasting Room. These were the 6 wines up for tasting, served with biscuits.

Sula Brut Chardonnay

The Chardonnay is a sparkling wine that is light and fresh having biscuit dough aromas whilst the palate features crisp chardonnay flavours and light crack yeast lees characteristics. 

Sula Sauvignon Blanc

This wine made the world sit up and take notice of Indian wines. Herbaceous, crisp, WHITE and dry, with aromas of bell peppers, intermingled with tropical fruits like passion fruit and gooseberry with a racy, zingy finish. 

Sula Dindori Reserve Chardonnay

An exotic elixir of peach and lychee flavours is a white wine. Floral, spicy, stunning. Great as an aperitif and terrific with spicy food, blue/goat cheese as well as seafood. 

Sula Rasa Syrah

Went a little BOLD with this one, not my style but my Malay sweetheart enjoyed this one so I am sure, this will be a treat for Red wine lovers.

Sula Rasa Cabernet Sauvignon

A red wine, worthy of a collector’s edition! It is aged in French oak barrels for over a year which makes it into a velvety smooth wine with a powerful finesse with a hint of fruit and spice. 

Sula Chenin Blanc

Chenin Blanc is India’s best selling white wine and is cold-fermented and finished in a semi-dry style. It is a light, fresh, fruity character, which makes it an excellent aperitif.

SUSTAINABILITY AT SULA VINEYARDS

I was really intrigued to know about the sustainability practised by Sula as I saw many boards claiming it. So I went ahead and asked the tour guide and this is what he told me and boy was I impressed!

Solar power

More than 75% of power used in Sula Vineyards comes from solar energy. Almost all the rooftops at the hotel, offices and restaurant are covered with solar panels in the vineyards.

Water recycling

Sula has really made sustainability seriously. With water efficient bathroom fittings in rooms, there are signs encouraging visitors and hotel guests to turn off taps. An effluent treatment plant (ETP) on site ensures all the water used in premises is treated and reused. This treated and disinfected water is used in housekeeping and also in the vineyards. 

Drip irrigation

In order to cut down on traditional irrigation practices which use a lot of water, drip irrigation system is installed in vineyards which cuts water consumption by almost half.

No plastic zone

There are no PET bottles for sale or in use at Sula hotel or restaurants. PET bottles are replaced by reusable glass bottles for mineral water. Dedicated efforts are undertaken to eradicate plastic from all food and beverage offerings, including cutlery and packaging.

No waste zone

Sula has its own biogas unit which is fueled by food waste generated by the restaurants. Hence there is no sent to landfills.

Best from waste

Sula went a step forward to use the last bit of waste from grapes – the grapeseed. They used to compost it but due to its stony nature, they did not decompose soon. Hence Sula introduced grapeseed oil made from it – using all bits of waste and putting it in good use.

Supporting the local community

As a part of CRS mandate, Sula employees the local community from the surrounding village.

Visit the pristine beaches

Visitors do not think of beaches when it comes to Kerala. However, Kerala boasts of a stunning coastline with pristine beaches. Majorly conducted in North Kerala, theyyam is now performed all across the state and the purpose of this dance worship is to unite humanity with divinity.

Spot the Mountain goats

Mountain goats known as Nilgiri Tahr are endemic to the Munnar region of Western ghats. They are protected in the Eravikulam National Park.

Tourists can go to the national park to spot the Nilgiri Tahr (it is not difficult).

WHEN TO VISIT KERALA

Kerala can be best enjoyed in winter that is between November to February because of perfect weather conditions and less humidity. Summers are good too but the humidity is unbearable combined with heat. Monsoons are not a good time as rain is pretty harsh in the state.

GETTING AROUND KERALA

Depending on how you get into Kerala, you’re likely to find yourself in one of three cities on arrival – Kochi, Kozhikode or Thiruvanthapuram (Trivandrum). 

The entire state is connected via train and has a good frequency. However one can visit the hotpots by land travel. Buses and private cars are the best way to get around Kerala.

Kerala is a tourist destination, and the hospitality is very well known among global tourists. To cater to the demands and comforts of global tourists, there are accommodation options for all sorts of budgets. Whether they are hostels, hotels, resorts, camping sites, houseboats, guesthouses or homestays, there are many options to choose from.

• Kerala is one of the cleanest states in India, in spite of the tourist influx so let’s try to maintain the same and be disciplined.
• If you come across a wild animal crossing the road/highway, give them time and space. Do not encroach on it by trying to get a selfie.
• Do not write on the palace walls or rocks at the beach. Let’s maintain the pristine heritage.
• Avoid wearing perfumes while going to the seaside or national parks.
• Blend in the culture by wearing the right clothes and eating the local food.

In spite of visiting Karnataka every summer for the last 18 years, visiting my mom’s side of the family during school vacation, I never explored the touristy side of Karnataka. But thankfully, for the last few years, I have been trying to change that.

I have always been fascinated with Coastal Karnataka as I have heard so much about the activities to do, places to visit and the beautiful beaches from my friends. Although I have explored the heritage sites of Karnataka, such as Badami, Aihole, Mahakuta, etc, I had somehow never visited the beaches.

My tryst with natural sites was limited only to Shivanasamudra Falls and Talakadu Beach, which is more of a riverbank than a beach.

Finally, I decided to change that and visit a lesser-known place called Kumta in Coastal Karnataka. 

ALL ABOUT KUMTA, KARNATAKA

Kumta is a small town, 30 km away from Gokarna. Majorly a fishing village, it is an idyllic coastal town that is also famous for growing cashew nuts and betel nuts.

The best thing about Kumta is that it brings the best of the natural world together – it is located in the lap of the Western Ghats and overlooks the Arabian Sea. Thanks to this, various ecosystems exist, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts. There are beaches, lagoons, mangrove forests, cliffs, hills and a lot more.

And all of this brings in healing through nature opportunities as well as soul-cleansing immersive experiences.

Since it is not as popular as Gokarna, Kumta has less footfall, which is why there are fewer tourists and fewer accommodation options. With less rapid development, it is still in pristine condition.

How to reach Kumta

By train

Kumta is a main station on the Konkan railway line (Western Railways), and there are direct trains from Bangalore (7 hours) as well as Mumbai (13 hours). Travellers can get down at Goa and then go on a road journey to enjoy the views. Autos are available to reach your hotel,l or you may request the hotel to arrange pick-up.

By road

Depending upon where you are travelling from, Kumta is accessible by road. Most people travelling here are from Karnataka state and prefer coming by car. I travelled from Belgaum and it took me 5 hours to reach Kumta. KSRTC buses are also available from major cities and towns.

By flight

The closest airport to reach Kumta is Goa (Dabolim Airport), which is approximately 150 km away and takes about 4 hours. Another airport that should be considered is Belgaum airport, which is 230 km away and takes about 5 hours. Private cars can be hired to reach Kumta from Goa or Belgaum.

Best time to visit Kumta

Kumta, being a coastal town, experiences torrential rains and most properties in Kumta and Gokarna close down for the monsoon. Mid-June to mid-August should be strictly avoided to travelling here. Summers are warm and humid, and if you do not mind the humidity, March to May can be considered for a visit. However, afternoons are too hot to venture out, so the best activity is to chill in a cafe during this time.

The best time to visit Kumta is in winter (November to February) when the weather is just perfect for all kinds of outdoor activities.

Where to stay in Kumta

This is one of the most important topics to discuss while talking about things to do in Kumta. While there are a few beach resorts in Kumta, choosing a good property to stay in will define the entire vacation here.

I chose to stay at Panchabhuta Conservation Foundation (Panchabhuta as it will be henceforth addressed) – an eco-conservation organisation overlooking the Kumta beach, also known as Nirvana Beach. Although they work as an NGO for the upliftment in the area, bringing economic independence for local communities, they also offer a nature-based healing retreat for the environmentally conscious travellers that promises humbling experiences. This is also the perfect beach stay in Kumta.

The property offers accommodation in thoughtfully designed habitats. Sustainability is at the core of Panchabhuta, wherein 4 rooms are constructed using local and recycled materials like laterite, bamboo, Kadappa stone, terracotta and reclaimed wood, ensuring that no trees were cut in the process. The main dishes from the coastal cuisine are fish, crabs and prawns. The speciality of Coastal Karnataka includes delicacies such as Ghee Roast, Sukka, Bale Yele Masala, Kundapur Chicken, Gassi and many more.

THINGS TO DO IN NIRVANA BEACH, KUMTA, KARNATAKA

Since I chose to stay with Panchabhuta, I had the liberty to pick any curated experiences they offer. I tried to fit in as many as I could during my 2 days there. These are some of the best and offbeat things to do in Kumta offered only by Panchabhuta.

Kayaking in Mangroves

Get on a 30-minute boat ride from the Nirvana beach to go towards the Aghanashini estuary, a Ramsar site. The estuary is brimming with acres of mangroves, painting a beautiful picture among the tranquil and calm waters. 

Never having kayaked before, I requested the Panchabhuta team to ride a 2-person kayak with me. I was too anxious to go solo in the water (even though I had a life jacket on me!).

Having reached the estuary waters, our boat anchored, and the team placed the kayak on the water. Me and Mangal (Panchabhuta’s founder) got on the kayak and carefully started paddling in the waterways.

Kayaking amongst the mangroves was an awe-inspiring experience. I was enchanted by the vibrant colours, the interplay of shadows, the varying sizes of the mangrove trees, and the voice of nothingness as I paddled through the tiny waterways.

We kayaked for about 30 minutes and I was tired from paddling so I requested Mangal to go back. We hopped on the boat, secured the kayak boat and sailed back to the beach. On the way back, we spotted a dolphin! What a win!

Trek the Kagal Cliff

This being a private area acquired by Panchabhuta, trekking the Kagal cliff is a signature and private experience. The host personally takes the guests on the trek and narrates stories on the go.

Also known as the Pepper Queen Trail, the cliff is right behind the property. But still, one has to hop in a car and ride a couple of kilometres to reach the base. 

Mangal started with the story of Chennabhairadevi, a formidable, 16th-century Jain queen who ruled here. Chennabhairadevi, believed to have originated from the Salva kingdom under the Vijayanagara empire, ruled from the prosperous trading centre of Gersoppa between 1552 and 1606 AD. During her reign, she engaged in conflicts with the Portuguese in 1559 and 1570, who aimed to control the spice trade through her ports. Recognising her influence, the Portuguese dubbed her the Pepper Queen, or Rainha da Pimenta, and sought diplomatic relations with her.

She shared the era with significant figures such as Rani Abbakka II, renowned for repelling Portuguese invaders at Ullal Fort, over 200km away. Chennabhairadevi’s reign concluded tragically when she was imprisoned following a conflict with the neighbouring Keladi king Venkatappa Nayak. This fate paralleled Rani Abbakka II, who had earlier met a similar end after betrayal by her estranged husband, the king of Mangalore, by the Portuguese.

As I trek to the hilltop listening to brave stories of the Pepper Queen, I notice the remnants from the bygone era, such as lookout points, laterite steps, and pits that the queen’s troops and their horses used as resting spots. 

The best part about the trek is the view. As I catch my breath overlooking the beautiful Aghanashini estuary on one side and Nirvana beach on the other.

Cycling at the Kagal Aghanashini trail

A picturesque countryside road takes visitors across the Kagal Aghanashini trail. Watch the fishermen go about their day, children playing in the yards, the cacophony of brahminy kites, kingfishers and seagulls, all of it while riding a bicycle. 

This is a guided trail and starts from the Panchabhuta resort. The distance is approximately 10 km and can take up to 3 hours to cover with multiple stops.

Exploring biodiversity in the ecosphere

If you are a wildlife lover like me and want to explore the biodiversity in and around Kumta, then Panchabhuta can arrange for the same. Whether it is dolphins or birds in the estuary area, both are possible.

Because of multiple ecosystems, there is ample bird diversity. Birds are seen from the rooms as right behind them is a jungle-like ecosystem. Similarly, predators – kites and eagles, shore birds (seagulls, sandpipers) and estuary birds (darters, kingfishers, cormorants) are seen.

So grab those binoculars and get going.

Culinary classes 

Local food while travelling is a must as it connects the visitor with the culture of the place. The Uttar Kannada or Coastal Karnataka cuisine brings many specialities to the table. If this interests you, then you can enrol in the in-house culinary class. 

Coastal Karnataka cuisine is extremely rich and diverse, but it all has its own characteristics of the central coast. It is perfectly suitable for travellers who want to give them a better understanding and appreciation of the cuisine.

Chill at the A’ka cafe

One of the best cafes in the area, offering regional, continental and Pan-Asian meals, lies in the Panchabhuta premises. The view of the Arabian Sea is spectacular from here. 

A’ka restaurant welcomes everyone, not just house guests, and attracts travellers from nearby hotels and day travellers in search of good coffee and excellent food paired with sea views. The diverse and enticing menu features home-grown produce and is inspired by coastal Karnataka flavours. It’s a non-vegetarian’s paradise, offering freshly caught fish and mussels served with dosa or rice. Vegetarians are also well-catered to with a wide array of South Indian and continental dishes. Don’t miss the dish of the day or a special request from the chef, based on seasonal availability, for an amazing culinary experience.

PLACES TO VISIT NEAR KUMTA, KARNATAKA

Gokarna

The distance between Kumta and Gokarna is approximately 32 km by road, although they are parallel to each other, and there is a ferry service for locals. Gokarna is known for its beaches, some of the famous ones are Kudle beach, Om beach, Half Moon Beach, Paradise Beach and Belekan beach.

Gokarna is also popular for the Mahabaleswara Temple. It is one of the seven sacred Mukti Kshetras in Karnataka. The Mahabaleshwara temple is one of the must-visit places to visit in Gokarna. 

Yana Caves

Yana Caves, located 30 km away from Kumta, are a fascinating natural site known for ancient limestone rock formations. The place features two massive rock outcrops that look like giant ant hills. Named as the Bhairaveshwara Shikhara and the Mohini Shikhara (“Shikhara” means “mountain peak”), the rocks are composed of solid black, crystalline karst limestone.

Mirjan Fort

Renowned for its triumphant history and architectural elegance, Mirjan Fort is one of the top attractions in Karnataka. Situated approximately 12 km from Kumta, this 16th-century fort is celebrated for its cultural grandeur and distinguished history.

Constructed from laterite, the Fort of Mirjan features four entrances, each with broad steps. Within the fort, there are nine wells, one secret exit, and a main entrance alongside two other entrances. The remains of a large darbar hall and a marketplace can also be found inside.

SUSTAINABLE TIPS FOR THINGS TO DO IN NIRVANA BEACH

• Carry your refillable water bottle. Avoid purchasing PET water bottles unless necessary.
• Do not trash the beach, estuary waters or the Kagal cliff area with wrappers and uneaten food. Use designated areas and the right-colored bins for disposing of waste.
• Be mindful of all the signs and follow them respectfully, especially in temples and beaches.
• Respect the ancient structures of temples and other structures by not sitting on them.
• Do not write on the pillars and walls of forts.

By Air

Trivandrum International Airport is the nearest airport which is well connected with all the major cities of India and few countries especially the Gulf.

By Rail

Thiruvananthapuram district is well-connected with all the major cities of India. Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station is known as the largest and busiest railway station in South India when it comes to passenger movement.

By Road

National and state highways connect Thiruvananthapuram to Kochi, Kozhikode, Mangalore and many other cities of Kerala. There are regular bus services from the major cities like Kochi, Bangalore, Madurai, Coimbatore and Chennai. Right from volvo buses to deluxe buses, many types of buses are run by KSRTC that connect Kerala to other neighbouring states.

Kerala food is a mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals mostly cooked in coconut oil. THINGS TO DO IN THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

On the first day of Trivandrum trip, it is best to start with exploring the Trivandrum city. Here are some of the suggestions.

Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple

Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple is a historic Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, renowned for its Dravidian architecture. This temple. Located at the heart of Trivandrum is one of the most revered “Divya Desam” or holy resting places of Lord Vishnu. The deity in the Srikovil, or inner sanctum, depicts Lord Vishnu in the “Anantha Shayanam’ posture, in which he lies on the body of Adi Shesha, the five-headed serpent. 

To visit Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple, visitors are required to follow a strict dress code. Men should wear a dhoti and no shirt, although you can have a shawl wrapped around your shoulders. Keep in mind that you are not allowed to wear pants underneath the dhoti, and you will be asked to remove it and leave it in the cloakroom if you do.

Women need to wear a saree or long skirt. Churidar and any form of Western clothing are strictly prohibited. If you are not dressed appropriately, you can buy a set mundu, or white dhoti, from the temple premises and wrap it around your waist. That will serve the purpose.

Kuthiramalika Palace

Located very close to Sri Padmanabhaswamy is Kuthiramalika, the royal palace of the Travancore Kingdom that ruled mid to south Kerala from the 1700s to 1949.  This palace, built in 1848 is a large building complex of several royal buildings with ornate woodwork and artistic splendour. “Kuthira” is the Malayalam word for “horse,” and so “Kuthiramalika” means, “the horse palace.” The palace is named so for the 122 wooden horses that adorn its ceiling brackets.

The Palace Museum offers a guided tour of a section of the palace. The exhibits here include a fascinating collection of royal artifacts, including paintings, sculptures, weapons, and musical instruments. Among its most notable exhibits are the Belgian mirrors and the elaborately carved wooden ceilings depicting various scenes from the Puranas.

Outside the main palace building, there is another museum, Chithralayam Art Gallery, that acts as an art and photo gallery. The exhibits here showcase painted portraits of several members of the royal family and also photographs of important historical events pertaining to the Travancore royals.

By the time you finish your exploration of Kuthiramalika Palace, it will be noon and if you fancy a simple homely, vegetarian meal, check out the palace cafeteria. If not, head to Priyadarshini Planetarium on NH66 and you will find all kinds of restaurants on the way.

Priyadarshini Planetarium

Priyadarshini Planetarium, with the associated Kerala State Science & Technology Museum, is one of the best educational sites to visit in Trivandrum. If you are an Indian, then as you step inside this planetarium, you will be filled with a sense of pride as some of the models of satellites and rockets you see here were launched into outer space from a launch station located just a few kilometers from you.

The planetarium features a state-of-the-art projection system that simulates the night sky, to narrate the stories of astronomical phenomena, space missions, and the latest discoveries in space science. The Kerala Science and Technology Museum has a section that narrates the history and evolution of Indian space science. Another section offers several interactive exhibits that aim to explain complex scientific phenomena to you with fun experiments.

Shangumugham Beach

Finally, head to Shangumugham Beach, the most happening beach in Trivandrum city, for some spectacular sunset photography. In the evening, the beach lights up with local and foreign tourists alike. There are several clean food joints by the beach for light snacks. The park benches installed by the beach are all you need to sit back and watch the sun go down.

There is more to Shangumugham Beach than its scenic beauty. It is culturally significant due to the presence of the giant statue of Sagarakanyaka (Jalakanyaka or Mermaid) created by the renowned sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman. This 35-meter-long sculpture adds a unique artistic element to the beach and has come to be the identity of this beach.

Trivandrum Zoo

Trivandrum Zoo is the largest and most well-maintained zoo in Kerala. While most zoos keep the wild in dark, dingy cells where you see animals that seem to have lost their will to live, Trivandrum Zoo has large, open enclosures with nature-mimicking habitats. This means you can see the likes of lions and tigers roaming freely in their enclosures, making your visit worth it.

The zoo has a large population of animals, birds, reptiles, aquatic creatures, and feline varieties. There is a lot to explore here so plan to reach here by 9:00 am, when it opens. Expect to spend 3-4 hours in the zoo as that is how long it would take to cover the vast area.

Outside food is not allowed in, but there is a canteen inside that serves tea and snacks in reusable cutleries as a measure to reduce plastic litter. You will be surprised at how clean and green this zoo is, situated in the very heart of Trivandrum city.

After you are done exploring the zoo, head to the main canteen outside the zoo for your lunch. It will be packed as most people who visit the zoo end up having lunch here to explore the other attractions in the zoo complex.

Zoo Complex Museums

There are several museums in the Trivandrum Zoo complex and you may not be able to see them all in a single day as they close at 4:45 pm. So, I am going to guide you here on the two must-visit museums in the zoo complex.

Start with Sri Chitra Art Gallery, located closest to the canteen. Here you will find paintings by several international painters depicting different styles of paintings like the Russian, Chinese, and Indonesian. The Indian collections include Tanjaur paintings, Rajputana paintings, and the original paintings of Raja Ravi Varma of Kerala.

Next, head to Napier Museum, the largest and oldest museum in Kerala. This museum located in a beautiful garden is a Gothic-style architectural marvel in red sandstone, with blue and white geometric patterns. This is an archaeological museum with ancient sculptures, bronze idols, traditional musical instruments, and ceremonial masks. The museum also features a several ivory carvings, temple chariots, and historical coins. After exploring the museum, you can relax in the park surrounding it.

Other Museums in the complex are the Museum of Natural History, Keralam: Museum of History and Heritage, KCS Panicker Art Gallery, and Swathi Thirunal Art Gallery.

Vetticaud Church

If you have time and if you are not exhausted after all that walking, head to Vetticaud Church, also known as Madre De Deus Church. This church located on the shores of Vetticaud Beach is the largest and most beautiful church in Trivandrum. It is also a pilgrim center attracting devotees from all over Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

After spending a few minutes of prayer or reflecting in the church, head to Vetticaud Beach to watch the sunset. Have your dinner at one of the beach-facing restaurants here and wrap your trip to the music of waves crashing against the rocks.

PLACES TO VISIT NEAR THIRUVANANTHAPURAM – KOVALAM

No visit to Thiruvananthapuram is complete without a visit to Kovalam. Located 45-minute drive from Trivandrum city, visitors can choose to stay in either in Kovalam or Trivandrum. Staying in Trivandrum for the whole trip is hassle-free, but a night in a beach-facing stay in Kovalam can be a refreshing experience.

The best places to visit in Kovalam are Azhimala Shiva Temple, Sagarika Marine Research Aquarium, Kovalam Lighthouse, and the famous Kovalam Beach.

Azhimala Shiva Temple

At about 1 hour drive from Trivandrum and at 8 kilometers down south from Kovalam, lies a beautiful temple, the Azhimala Shiva Temple. This temple, perched on a scenic cliff overlooking the Arabian Sea, is famous for its magnificent 58-foot-tall statue of Lord Shiva. 

This statue of Lord Shiva in a meditative pose is made by a local sculptor with intricate carving and fine detailing. The adjacent Azhimala Beach is a calm and secluded beach where you can spend some alone time while enjoying a simple breakfast from the sea-facing temple canteen.

Sagarika Marine Research Aquarium

As you make your way to Kovalam Beach from Azhimala Shiva Temple, the first stop to hop over is the Sagarika Marine Research Aquarium. This is a small aquarium, but given its proximity to Kovalam Beach and also its nominal entry fee (Rs. 20 per adult), this is definitely worth a visit.

Visitors will find here many species of multi-colored aquatic life, local and exotic, swimming in large glass enclosures. The information displayed alongside the tanks is a great help in understanding the types and specialties of the organisms.

Kovalam Lighthouse

The next stop in Kovalam is the iconic red and white striped Kovalam Lighthouse that has become the landmark of Kovalam. Standing 118 feet tall, this lighthouse is situated atop Kurumkal Hill, offering panoramic views of the Arabian Sea, the coastline, and the lush greenery surrounding it.

This Kovalam Lighthouse is one of the few lighthouses in the country with a lift. You can go up to a level by the lift and then climb just two flights of stairs to reach the top for a spectacular view.

Kovalam Beach

Kovalam Beach, the most popular Kerala beach among international tourists, is where you are going to have the most fun in this Trivandrum Kovalam trip. This beach with its crescent shape has an inlet of shallow waters making it the perfect beach for swimming and surfing. You can also engage in water sports like speedboating, banana boating, parasailing, and jet-skiing.

The shore is lined by a vibrant market with some great restaurants and cafes.  Beatles Cafe & Grill House and The Crow’s Nest Café are two popular beach-side cafes. For a taste of local Keralan seafood, head to Ustaad Hotel by the beach.

Kovalam Beach has an active nightlife. Several of the cafes here offer live performances and organize events during weekends. You will also find many vibrant pubs and restobars in the vicinity.

Kovalam Houseboat

Spending a night in the Kovalam houseboat is one of the most popular tourist activities in Thiruvananthapuram. Book a traditional houseboat that is made out of reed, cork, and bamboo. Cruising with Kovalam Houseboat Tours is a great way to spend time in Kovalam backwaters. One can lounge around watching the sunset or villagers going about their way. The cruise offers unparalleled views of backwaters.

SUSTAINBLE TIPS FOR THINGS TO DO IN THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

• Choose eco-friendly accommodations that make conscious efforts towards sustainability.
• Avoid takeouts in plastic containers and eat in restaurants instead.
• Avoid littering the beaches and zoo complex, use the trash cans.
• Follow the dress code and other guidelines when visiting religious sites like the Padmanabhaswamy Temple.

It was monsoon and I craved for a holiday, somewhere where I could be amidst nature and experience the monsoon. Places I could go to were either flooded or too crowded.  Having experienced Offbeat Goa in Monsoon I decided to do a quick trip to Mysore in the south Indian state of Karnataka. There are many things to do in Mysore but having been there earlier I wanted to get out of the city. I looked up one-day trips from Mysore and zeroed in on Shivanasamudra Falls from Mysore.

I hired a cab from Mysore to Shivanasamudra Falls and explored a few other places in between.

About Shivanasamudra Falls

Shivanasamudra Falls are located approximately 70 km from Mysore and 139 km from Bengaluru. Being at such a reachable distance, Shivanasamudra Falls are a perfect one day trip from both cities.

Shivanasamudra Falls also known as Sivasamudram waterfalls or Shivasamudram waterfalls are located in the Mandya district of Karnataka state. The name ‘Shiva’ means the god Shiva and ‘samudra’ means Sea.

Visit to the Gaganachukki and Barachukki waterfalls

I was excited to finally be there as the monsoon was in full force and I was sure of a good show ahead. The entire approach road was full of deep forests of the Cauvery (Kaveri) Wildlife Sanctuary.

Formed by the Kaveri river, Shivasamudram waterfalls are segmented waterfalls with several parallel streams formed adjacent to each other. The Kaveri river divides itself into two different falls, forming the Gaganachukki waterfalls and the Barachukki waterfalls. Gaganachukki and Barachukki Falls are collectively called Shivasamudram waterfalls though Gaganachukki is most commonly represented as Shivasamudram waterfalls. The falls offer breathtaking sights in the peak monsoons. Very different from my visit to Kuang si waterfalls, Luang Prabang.

Fact: Shivanasamudra Falls are the second largest fall in India and have been ranked 45th among the world’s best 100 waterfalls.

Barachukki Falls

These were the first falls we visited. The segmented Barachukki waterfalls are graceful and the more popular one among the two falls. This crashing cascade of water is also the wider one among the two falls and has a heavier inflow. The mist rising from the waterfalls makes it look breathtaking.

In summer and winter, the inflow decreases and visitors can climb down to the waterfall and have a bath. But you have to be extremely careful as the flow is still strong and there are no lifeguards available. The mist formed from the water plunging at great speed from the cliff above is a great sight.

Coracle ride on Shivanasamudra Falls (Barachukki falls)

A coracle is a traditional circular boat that has been used in Karnataka for centuries to ferry people across the river. Back in the day, coracles were made from willow and were lightweight, waterproof and affordable. The modern version uses plastic sheets and bitumen sheets to make them sturdier. On average, around 4-5 people can fit into a coracle along with the rider.

Coracle ride at Barachukki waterfall is available in the off-season months to see the mouth of the magnificent waterfall from close quarters. Since I was visiting during the monsoon, these rides were closed for safety reasons. Climbing down the waterfall was also closed given the sheer volume of the waterfall.

Coracle Rides are available in other places of Karnataka such as Hampi, Dandeli, Kabini, Tungabhadra and others.

A coracle ride costs approximately Rs. 200/- per head.

Gaganachukki Falls

Situated at a distance of 1km from Barachukki is the Gaganachukki waterfalls. It is a huge horsetail shaped waterfall dropping from a height of 90 m and two large parallel streams that cascade down through a rocky bed. The currents here are quite strong and the gorge is quite deep. Hence, visitors cannot go to the waterfalls and swimming is prohibited. There is a watchtower offering a spectacular view of the waterfall.
Asia’s first Hydro-electric Power station was set up in the year 1902 at Gaganachukki waterfalls and is one of the oldest power generating stations in India.

Best time to visit Shivanasamudra falls

Monsoons are the best time to see the waterfalls in full grandeur. I am so glad I could visit them then! But the downside is not being able to get into the water or ride a coracle.

Since most people do a day trip to Shivanasamudra falls from Bengaluru or Mysore, they tend to reach late morning. While reaching there in monsoon any time of the day is pleasant, summers are harsh. So reach early or late during the day to enjoy the waterfalls to the fullest.

Shivanasamudra Accommodation

Unfortunately, there are no places to stay overlooking the waterfalls. Since most people do a day trip to Baarachukki and Gaganachukki, there are few hotels or resorts. Thankfully there are Karnataka State Tourism Development (KSTDC) run hotels that are decent enough for food and stay.

How to Reach Shivanasamudra falls

By Bus
KSRTC buses ply between all major cities and towns of Karnataka uptil Malavalli. From Malavalli, one can book a taxi up to Sathegala Post.

By Train
Trains are available between Bengaluru and Mysore stations up to Maddur station which is nearest to Shivanasamudra waterfalls.

By Flight
The nearest international airport is Kempegowda Airport, Bengaluru which is 178km. The nearest domestic airport is Mysore which is 79 km away. From the airport, visitors can hire a bus or private taxi.

• Nanjanagud Temples: Lying on the banks of River Kapila, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is historically important as it is believed that the Shivling of the temple was placed by the famous Rishi Gauthama and was also worshiped by Parashurama when he was on his journey to cleanse his sin of killing his mother.
• Talakadu Beach – Located at 25 km from Somanathapura, this place lies at the banks of River Cauvery. Lord Shiva in the form of Vaidyanatheswara is worshiped here. The place is also famous for its sand dunes. It is believed that several temples are still buried under the sand dunes.
• Ranganatha Temple, Srirangapatna: Located in the Mysore district, this temple was built by the Ganga dynasty of the Vaishnavite cult. The temple showcases a blended architectural style of Hoysala and Vijaynagara temple designs and is a must visit.

Is Barachukki and Shivanasamudra same?

Barachukki and Gaganachukki waterfalls are together known as the Shivanasamudra Falls. The eastern branch of the waterfall is known as Barachukki while the western branch is known as Gaganachukki.

Which is better, Gaganachukki or Barachukki?

That’s a personal perspective. Gaganchukki has amazing viewpoints placed at good heights but at Barachukki visitors can get down to the bottom of the falls and ride coracles.

Sustainable tips for visiting Shivanasamudra falls

• Carry reusable and refillable water bottles.
• Do not litter – It is perfectly okay to snack near the waterfall, but do not litter the pristine areas. Use a trash bin to dispose of snack pouches or pet bottles. Or even better, take it back to the hotel.
• Do not go in the water applying sunscreen lotion/mosquito repellent creams – Cosmetic products use many known and unknown chemicals. They may or may not react to the natural flora and fauna of the area. Why take the chance? The best is to avoid it.
• Respect nature – Though you may get the most perfect shot and a thousand likes for the photo, do not in any way harm the natural formations of the waterfalls or trees for a vantage point.

Treks in Uttarakhand are popular all year round. Trekkers want to tick off all possible trekking expeditions covering all the routes. Although I love trekking once in a while, I am not the type to tick off the popular treks in India. Some of my trekking expeditions that I have documented are Trek to Triund, Himachal and Trekking in Munnar, Kerala.

The Chopta Chandrashila trek was an impromptu plan for taking a short break. It was a 3-day and 4-night trip starting and ending in Delhi. This was the itinerary.

Night 1: Overnight travel from Delhi to Chopta via Haridwar and Devprayag

Day 1: Reach Chopta and acclimatize to the altitude

Day 2: Trek to Chandrashila and back

Day 3: Trek to Deoriatal from Sari village. Drive back to Delhi and reach by 3 am.

LEGEND OF TUNGNATH TEMPLE

According to a legend, it is believed that during the war of the Mahabharata, the Pandavas killed their cousin brothers. Vyas Rishi advised the Pandavas that since they were culpable of killing their relatives, their act could only be pardoned by Lord Shiva. However, Lord Shiva was angry with them and did not want to pardon them.

In order to keep them from him, Lord Shiva took the form of a bull and went into hiding in an underground haven called Guptkashi. The Pandavas chased him there. But later, Lord Shiva’s body in the form of a bull’s parts was rematerialized at five different locations. Pandavas built temples at all these five locations and sought his mercy, which he granted them. Tungnath temple is one of the five Kedar temples, and pilgrims visiting Kedarnath temple often visit Tungnath temple for blessings. 

Another legend states that Lord Ram meditated at the Chandrashila peak. It is said that Ravan, the demon, did penance to Lord Shiva here. This is also the reason why this place is known as Ravan Shila.

CHOPTA CHANDRASHILA TREK EXPERIENCE

The trek starts from the Chopta base camp. It is ideal to arrive here one day before and acclimatise to the altitude, temperature and surroundings. Chopta, in itself, is a charming hill station that features lush meadows, dense forests, and panoramic views of snow-clad peaks.

There are no hotels in Chopta, but a lot of seasonal camps. Most of these camps close for winter, but also go full in the spring and summer seasons. It is best to book in advance to get the best of camp – warm bedding, clean toilets and hot food. The crisp mountain air and the sound of birds chirping create a tranquil ambience, setting the tone for the journey ahead.

It is ideal to start the Chopta-Chandrashila trek as early as possible. From the Chopta base camp, the trek base is about 5-8 km away, depending on which camp you choose.

We started at 7 am from the camp, with a packed lunch. We were advised to bring reusable plastic/steel containers for our lunch from home, and our camp provided us with meals to carry.

We reached the base of the trek at 7:30 am and started the ascent with hiking poles in our hands. Wooden sticks are available for rent in the shops at the base. So fret not in case you don’t want to carry it from home. And trust me, get the stick(s) as it makes the hike so much easier.

The distance of the Chopta-Chandrashila trek from the base is 9 km and takes 4-5 hours one way, depending on your speed and pace. So this is easily doable in one day.

The path to the temple is well-marked with clear steps and moderately steep, making it accessible even to beginners. The path starts off with rhododendron trees on both sides of the path and slowly opens up to the view of meadows.

For those who do not wish to hike (the Kedarnath pilgrims), can opt for mules, which I strongly discourage. If you cannot hike, stay at home and stop torturing animals because god is certainly not going to be happy if you hurt his children just to tick off your yatra list!

I saw young and old pilgrims riding the mules, and since it’s the same path for walking, one has to be attentive and give space to a mule, or there are chances you will be de-roaded by them. The handlers do give warnings in case they feel you are not giving attention, so move away as quickly as possible.

With ascent, the air gets thinner and the hike gets difficult and may lower the speed. However, the view of the mountains is enough to motivate hikers to be strong and move forward.

After the rhododendrons, the trail welcomes trees such as oak, deodar forest, as well as wildflowers in the meadows. The meadows are perfect to sit or lie down, looking at the vastness of the snow-clad mountains in front of you.

There are small shops every few hundred meters selling water bottles, wafer packets and other snacks.

After 4 hours of trek, we reached shops selling a lot of puja items. There was also a toilet here for freshening up. This meant the temple was nearby.

We reached the Tungnath temple soon, but since it was aarti time, the temple was extremely crowded. Someone suggested visiting the temple after hiking the Chandrashila summit, which would easily take another 2 hours. And we agreed.

So we headed towards Chandrashila summit, which is another 1.5 km from Tungnath temple, and it takes around 1 hour to reach there. After crossing the alpine meadows, there is a steep climb of 500 meters. 

Soon we reached the summit point of the Chopta Chandrashila trek at an altitude of 13100 feet. The snow-clad mountain views, which we had been getting all along, were now clearly visible right in front of us. It was surreal, and we took a million photos and videos to capture the beauty. We also had lunch from our reusable food boxes (tupperware FTW!).

A few meters further, we received blessings from another small temple at the summit. The area is adorned with numerous stone pyramids, carefully arranged to symbolise harmony, zen, and balance.

After taking some rest over there, we started heading back to our base camp in Chopta with a stopover at Tungnath temple. The temple was still crowded on return, but manageable. We stood in line for our turn to seek blessings. We thoroughly thanked the Tungnath deity for our successful hike.

We reached Chopta basecamp in the early evening. I was too tired for anything, so I simply dozed off. After napping for a couple of hours, I woke up to singing, clapping and instrument playing. My campmates were all joyful and in celebratory mode. I joined the fun and had dinner after some time.

The next morning, it was time to leave the base camp for Deoriatal. We left after an early breakfast.

Best time to visit the Chopta Chandrashila Trek

Chopta-Chandrashila trek is open all year round, which is why it is popular among hiking enthusiasts. I chose to hike in summer (June first week). The weather was perfect, not too hot or cold, and the peaks still had snow. But the weather in the mountains changes instantaneously, so one needs to be careful. Evening showers and sometimes even light snow are possible, so one must be prepared for it. However, since it was yatra season, there were huge pilgrim crowds, meaning more mules on the trail. The meadows had lovely wildflowers, and overall, it was perfect.

I feel that spring is the best time to experience the best of both worlds – there will be slight snow in the meadows, and the rhododendrons will be in bloom. The red flowers overlooking the mountains form a stunning landscape.

In winter, the meadows and peaks are covered with snow, which makes it a little difficult to climb up to the summit because of the slippery path. Not to mention the bitter cold you will have to encounter and the special equipment you will need to carry. 

But no matter when you go, it is a treat to all the senses.

How to Reach Chopta

The Chandrashila trek starts from the base camp of Chopta in Uttarakhand. It is possible to reach Chopta from Dehradun, Haridwar, or Rishikesh. From these destinations, you can get to Chopta by bus, car, or taxi. 

By Air

The nearest major airport to Chopta is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun. It takes around 4-8 hours to reach Dehradun by air from most metropolitan cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Jaipur and Mumbai. The total time taken is dependent upon the distance between the two destinations. From Dehradun, you can reach Chopta by car or taxi, covering around 198 kilometres in 6 hours.

By Train

Reaching Chopta by rail is easy; you can get a direct train to Haridwar from all major cities like Lucknow, Kolkata, Jaipur, and Amritsar. The major trains that take you to Haridwar are Yoga Express, Doon Express, Jan Shatabdi Express, and Upasana Express. It takes around 5.5 hours to reach Chopta from Haridwar, covering approximately 187 kilometres easily via a taxi or a car.

By Road

You can reach Rishikesh via a bus or private car from Delhi, Jaipur, Saharanpur, Amritsar, and other nearby cities. Himachal Road Transportation Corporation and Uttarakhand Transport Corporation offer daily buses to these destinations alongside private bus services. Upon reaching Rishikesh, you can take a direct cab or hire a taxi to reach Chopta, covering 161 kilometers in 5 hours.
