Bandhavgarh National Park is a sought-after Tiger Reserve in the state of Madhya Pradesh in India. One of the most popular parks in the country, it has attracted naturalists, photographers, and international wildlife documentary filmmakers.

While tiger safari in Bandhavgarh is famous due to the highest density of Royal Bengal Tigers, it is equally a haven for other wildlife such as Indian bison, Sloth bears, Leopards, many types of deer and bird diversity.

Having been to other tiger reserves in Madhya Pradesh, such as – Kanha, Pench and Satpura – I was super excited for Bandhavgarh as it was my first time there.

WHY CHOOSE BANDHAVGARH?

Once the hunting grounds of the Maharaja of Rewa, it is now a significant sanctuary for wildlife. Bandhavgarh National Park is nestled in the Vindhya Hills of Madhya Pradesh, covering an area of over 1100 sq km. The park is divided in 3 core zones – Tala, Magadhi and Khitauli and 3 buffer zones – Dhamokhar, Johila and Panpatha. Each zone has a distinct landscape, offering a unique setting for wildlife.

The park’s diverse landscape features steep ridges, forested valleys, grassy swamps and open meadows, interspersed with the Bandhavgarh Fort, creating a stunning natural habitat.

It is also closer to various other tourist sights, such as the Bhedaghat and Khajuraho temples.

WHY CHOOSE PUGDUNDEE SAFARIS?

As important as choosing a good park for a jungle vacation in India is, choosing the right accommodation is also very crucial. Choosing resorts in Bandhavgarh can be overwhelming.

• Near the park gate: oftentimes hotels/resorts are extremely far from the park gate and it becomes tiresome to travel even before entering the gate. King’s Lodge is located 4km away from Tala zone – a 10 minutes drive.

KING’s LODGE BANDHAVGARH REVIEW

A long drive awaited after reaching Jabalpur airport. I was already dreading the city traffic, but almost immediately out of the airport, our driver, Izhar suggested if he could use a short-cut through a village to avoid the city roads. We were more than happy as he went to inform us that we would save 30 minutes of driving time!

The 3.5-hour drive was mostly smooth and made beautiful thanks to the blooming Palash flowers (Flame of the Forest). On crossing Umaria town, the Sal forests were visible on both sides – that meant we were close!

Glued to our window panes for any movement, we came across a herd of spotted deer. Aah, the feeling of being in the wilderness! The double-laned national highway then narrowed down to one lane, and the speed limit went down. We were even close!

We crossed the entry gates of all the core zones and later, a right turn brought us to the property. We were heartily welcomed by the staff at the lodge.

We were seated in the library with a projection room that doubles as a hi-tea room. Welcome drinks, along with a cold face towel, immediately made us feel at home. The lodge manager, Mr Yash requested a briefing session to explain about the property and even brought us gifts – refillable steel water bottles.

Here is all the information he shared and I came to know in the 3 days that I stayed.

Rooms at King’s Lodge Bandhavagarh

King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh features 18 spacious and well-appointed cottages that are designed keeping in mind the needs and comforts of the modern traveller. The cottages are in between a bamboo forest ensuring privacy and views to each unit. Cottages are lined with cow dung and hay – an ancient Indian practice for regulating interior temperatures. Since the temperatures can be extreme in Bandhavgarh, these practices ensure a comfortable temperature within the room.

Each unit of the beautifully designed cottage has a king-size bed, a contemporary ensuite bathroom and private viewing decks.

All rooms also have a tea and coffee maker with home-made cookies, areas to stow the luggage and a safety locker. Minimal yet rustic decor, beds with cozy mattresses, and ambient lighting add to the comfort and make you feel right at home. Lounge in the verandah of your cottage while getting engulfed in the sweet voices of countless birds.

Sustainability, Indian biodiversity and wildlife is reflected in every corner of the room and common spaces. The common areas have furniture using the local Sal trees and the door and handles have a wildlife element to them. The property wants the guests to enjoy the wilderness so much so that there is no TV and phone network in the rooms. However, there is wi-fi across the property that ensures you can share awesome wildlife pictures with your family and friends.

There is no in-room service and all meals are served in dedicated areas around the reception.

Being a sustainable property, drinking water is served in refillable steel bottles. The water is safe to consume as it is filtered RO water! The water is refilled several times a day and you will never have to request for it.

Culinary Delights

The menu is curated keeping the domestic and international guests in mind. The menu uses local ingredients from local vendors. The raw materials and ingredients used are sourced from local farmers and markets. And the food served gives an authentic taste of cuisine that is popular in the villages of Madhya Pradesh as well as global dishes.

King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh takes pride in not using and serving frozen food or spices. The executive chef will share the menu and ask for your preferred meal, especially for dinner. The meals are divided in 2 categories – Indian and Global, with enough options for vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.

Breakfast and lunch are served in the dining room, while dinner is an explicit affair at an outdoor sitting area. Cocktails and dinner are served in an open farmland where the chefs cook many live dishes on barbeque, and it is a perfect setting to meet other guests staying in the hotel and discuss the wildlife sightings of the day! There are bonfires lit in the area, ensuring you are warm while you sip your cold beer.

On many occasions a tribal dance is arranged here which is part of evening entertainment and also gives a slice of local culture. On one of the days that we were there, we watched the Baiga Tribe performing their festival dance, watched a cricket final match and on one  there was a wildlife documentary screening.

On-the-go safari Breakfast

Safari breakfasts are special. Imagine roughing it out in the cold wind for hours, trying to sight the big cats and then stopping in one of the jungle pit-stop areas where you are served hot beverages, samosas wrapped in Sal leaves, sandwiches, vegetable cutlets, fresh fruits, juice, cakes and other delicious snacks. It cannot get better than this!

King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh organizes breakfast on the go so that you are never hungry on a safari. The vehicles stop at jungle centre points that are designated breakfast points. The vehicle driver and guide set up a picnic basket and one can have a hearty meal amid the forest.

Beware of sparrows and monkeys who may try to snatch the yummy breakfast from your hands.

Swimming Pool

Near the reception of the property, there’s a small swimming pool where you can cool off after the game drive. King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh has a pool overlooking their organic garden and surrounded by greenery. Cool off and enjoy your holiday with a splash at the swimming pool. 

Library

If you have leisure time at hand then head to the in-house library that is ambient and beautifully styled with a number of books on wildlife and general reading. The library turns into a video room in the evening, where several documentary screenings take place.

Spa

After a long day out in the park, there is nothing more relaxing than a massage. Especially a full-day safari! Your body will thank you for the array of massages that are offered here  including ayurvedic massage, reflexology, Indian head massage and other range of full-body treatments.

Spa needs to be booked in advance so that the lodge can arrange the masseuse. 

Nature trail and Cycling tours

King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh arranges nature trail in and around the property with an expert naturalist. Since the property borders the Tala zone, there are birds to give you company. The walks are usually aimed at finding smaller things in the park like insects, butterflies, tracks and signs, birds, plants and other things that one would miss in a jeep. However, if luck is on your side, you might catch a glimpse of curious eyes peering back at you, belonging to one of the many hidden residents of the wild.

As the sun dips below the horizon, watch the forest prepare for a peaceful night’s rest. And as the moon rises over the clearing, carry home a heart full of memories—ones that will linger in your dreams long after you leave.

I suggest guests have atleast one free evening (parks are closed on Wednesday afternoon) to take up these walking tours.

Village Walks

You can experience the raw beauty of the surrounding village that borders the forests and listen to the tales of locals – how they have been living with the wildlife for centuries.

Immerse yourself in the lives of the local community, where many are skilled artisans. Share a meal or gain valuable insights from the indigenous tribes, such as the Baiga, who have lived in harmony with the forests for generations.

Sundowner

Who said one has to rough it out during a safari vacation? King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh ensures that you have a good time in between and after the safaris. Looking for an intimate dinner with your partner? Consider it done – with bush dinner and sundowner at exotic locales around the property. 

Sundowner is arranged near a pond where drinks and snacks await, overlooking the setting sun. However, in March 2025 when I visited, the activity was temporarily closed due to Sloth Bear movement in the area.

Tribal Dance

The property invites the community members of the local tribe, the Baiga, who entertain the guests with their festive dances and singing. This one hour of dance session is refreshing as you sip a local mahua cocktail while the bonfire warms you. 

Guests can join the dance and enjoy themselves with the tribe. 

Nature Shop

Take a bit of King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh with you with the souvenirs from nature shop. There are t-shirts, jackets, hats and caps that can be purchased. Other things include paintings and jewellery made by the Baiga tribe.

I picked some beautiful jewellery and my husband picked up a hat.

SUSTAINABILITY AT KING’S LODGE BANDHVAGRAH

The Pugdundee Safaris group is conscious of the environment and has inculcated many sustainable values in all of its hotels. Inspite of being in the jungle and away from many resources, the lodge practices sustainability! Some of the initiatives include the type of construction, no plastic policy, local employment, and others. Let us look at them in detail.

• The property has used sustainable materials throughout and has also added cod dung to the exterior to give a very rustic look. The dung along with hay cools the interiors – a practice from the Indian culture.
• The property has a strict no plastic waste policy. The guests are gifted stainless steel bottles upon check-in and encouraged to use them. There are RO water refilling stations in various areas, and the rooms also have steel bottles wherein the water gets refilled multiple times. 
• King’s Lodge, nestled in Rancha village, offers a captivating immersion into local rural life. Guests can visit the villages or the community members come to the property for dance performances, local cooking or selling jewellery.
• In common areas, instead of hand tissues, the lodge uses washable and reusable cotton napkins in the common bathroom.
• There is a solar panel at property that produces energy.
• The food is grown organically or purchased from a local vendor. Everything used in the kitchen is freshly prepared – they take pride in not serving frozen food, food that is exotic or non-seasonal. All of this makes the food taste amazing!

HOW TO REACH KING’S LODGE BANDHAVGARH

By flight

Bandhavgarh can easily be reached by air from all major cities in India including Delhi and Mumbai. Jabalpur is the closest airport to Bandhavgarh and is about a 4-hour road drive and flights from 4 cities operate here everyday – Indore, Bhopal, Mumbai and Delhi.

Khajuraho airport is 5 hours away and also a convenient airport specially when combining this beautiful temple town in your travels with Bandhavgarh.

By train

Umaria is the closest railway station (1 hour) followed by Katni (2 hours) and Jabalpur (4 hours), to reach King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh.

Katni is another major railway junction with trains coming from all parts of the country, including Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Kolkotta.

FINAL THOUGHTS ABOUT KING’S LODGE BANDHAVGARH REVIEW

During my stay at King’s Lodge, I enjoyed a perfect blend of wildlife, culture and relaxation. The hospitality and meticulous attention to detail stood out during my brief visit. Nestled amidst the lush forest, the lodge offered a much-required tranquil retreat where nature and comfort coexist. We woke up to the melody of birds, set out on exhilarating jungle safaris to spot majestic tigers, and unwound with breathtaking sunsets over the forest canopy. The staff, manager and naturalists of the lodge are lovely people and one can easily strike a conversation with them.. The warm hospitality guarantees my desire to return for another stay.

Bori Wildlife Sanctuary is not very popular as compared to other tiger parks in Madhya Pradesh – Kanha, Pench and Bandhavgarh. However, little do people know that Bori is a part of Satpura National Park. 

Satpura National Park is famous for its sloth bear sightings, but it is equally a haven for tigers, types of deer and bird diversity. It is also a perfect wildlife resort near Bhopal even if one does not 

As important it is to choose a good park for jungle vacation in India, choosing the right accommodation also is. A wildlife safari lodge should have the following traits and I chose Bori Safari Lodge for the same.

• Near the park gate: oftentimes hotels/resorts are extremely far from park gate and it becomes tiresome to travel even before entering the gate.

• Natural vibe: The interior, surroundings and aesthetics are extremely important for a hotel near wildlife parks. It should maintain rustic vibes, have minimalist lighting and should not allow loud music.

• Local food: the best part about travelling is the food and hotels should serve local food that is fresh in season and distinctive of the place. Serving morning tea before safari and high-tea after safari is part of the whole comfortable safari experience.

• In-house naturalist: Having a knowledgeable and experienced naturalist is an added advantage on safari who can give an overview about the entire forest biodiversity including animals, plants and birds. They are also expert trackers and guides who know the forest as well as the back of their hand.

BORI SAFARI LODGE REVIEW

After turning left from the Bhopal-Nagpur highway, we drove through the dusty village roads for sometime. Another left turn and we entered the lodge premises with happy faces waving to us. We were heartily welcomed by literally every staff at the lodge.

Welcome drinks along with a cold face towel immediately made us feel at home. The lodge manager Mr Shivraj Singh requested a briefing session to explain about the property.

Here is all the information he shared and I came to know in the 2 days that I stayed.

Rooms at Bori Safari Lodge

Bori Safari Lodge features 8 spacious and well-appointed rooms that are designed keeping in mind the needs and comforts of the modern traveller. Each unit of the beautifully designed rooms has a king size bed, contemporary ensuite bathroom and private viewing decks. There is a sitting/reading lounge area where one can keep their cameras, binoculars and other wildlife gears or simply read.

All rooms also have a tea and coffee maker with home-made cookies, wardrobes and safety locker. Artful decor, beds with cozy mattresses, modern furniture, and ambient lighting add to your comfort. Sit back and enjoy the serene ambience of the farmlands from the private deck of the room!

Indian artistic heritage is reflected in every corner of the room, starting with complimentary Kama Ayurveda amenities, wildlife photos/portraits/books and local art. The property wants the guests to enjoy the wilderness so much so that there is no TV or wi-fi or telephones in rooms. However there is a common area around the reception that has wi-fi connectivity if you are working outside of the office.

There is no in-room service and in case you need to call the staff there is a blow horn that one has to blow into and keep outside the room. Blow really hard so that they can hear it.

In addition to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the farms, one can have the feeling of sleeping under the sky due to a small glass portion between the wall and ceiling. Although not a good option for a night full of lightning and thunderstorms! 

Being a sustainable property, drinking water is served in refillable steel bottles. The water is safe to consume as it is filtered RO water!

Culinary Delights

There is an in-house multi-cuisine restaurant, where all the meals are served. Embedded in the central courtyard of the lodge, this restaurant has beautiful indoor and outdoor dining spaces. 

They have a fixed menu for each meal and the food is served on the table. The raw materials and ingredients used are sourced from local farmers and markets. And the food served gives an authentic taste of cuisine that is popular in the villages of Madhya Pradesh as well as global dishes.

Cocktails and dinner is served in an open farmland where the chefs cook many live dishes on barbeque and it is a perfect setting to meet other guests staying in the hotel and discuss about the wildlife sightings of the day!

Bori Safari Lodge features an infinite pool overlooking a pond surrounded by greenery. Cool off and enjoy your holiday with a splash at the swimming pool. Enjoy a refreshing swim, laze in the sunbeds or have a memorable time with your family and children at the pool. 

Library

If you have leisure time at hand then head to  the in-house library that is ambient and beautifully styled with a number of books on wildlife and general reading. This is also the only place where wi-fi works in the entire resort so if you have some work to do this is the place to be.

Spa 

After a long day out in the park, there is nothing more relaxing than a massage. Especially a full day safari! Your body will thank you for the array of massages that are offered here  including ayurvedic massage, reflexology, Indian head massage and other range of full-body treatments. 

The lodge employs local ladies who are well trained in massage therapy to deliver these experiences to guests. 

Walking tours

The Bori Wildlife Sanctuary along with Satpura National Park are the only two protected areas in Central India where walking is permitted as a means to explore the park. A guided walking safari with the expert naturalist is an experience of a lifetime where one may stumble upon many kinds of biodiversity and tales that may last a long time. The walks are usually aimed at finding smaller things in the park like insects, butterflies, tracks and signs, birds, plants and other things that one would miss in a jeep.

I suggest guests have atleast one free evening (parks are closed on wednesday afternoon) to take up these walking tours.

Sundowner

The exploration doesn’t stop after wildlife chasing as you once again hop into the open-top jeep where the team guides you to a secluded riverbed along the Tawa River. Here  a delightful high tea and sundowners await. During certain months, the river’s flow recedes significantly, revealing picturesque sandy banks where you’ll pause. In the spring months a local flower called Mahua blooms which is the region’s favorite. 

While it is popular for country liquor, the Bori Safari Lodge has made a special concoction using the Mahua flowers called Mahua Martini on the sandy riverfront while witnessing the sunset over the national park.

HOW TO REACH BORI SAFARI LODGE

By flight

Bori Safari Lodge can be reached via road from the airport or train station.

The nearest airport is Bhopal airport located at 145 km and another is Nagpur Airport located 235 km from the resort near Bori Wildlife Sanctuary. From both these airports, you can reach the lodge via cabs or buses.

By train

The Betul Railway station is the closest to Bori Safari Lodge. The station acts as a junction for 94 trains that connect to various parts of the country like Mumbai, Bhopal, Nagpur, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bangalore. It is 37.8 km from the resort near Bori Wildlife Sanctuary. 

FINAL THOUGHTS ABOUT BORI SAFARI LODGE REVIEW

During my stay at Bori Lodge, I enjoyed a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. The hospitality and meticulous attention to detail stood out during my brief visit. The resort exudes beauty, comfort, and coziness, complemented by delectable cuisine. In my opinion, Bori Safari Lodge ranks among the top luxury jungle resorts in India, thanks to its exceptional offerings. The staff, manager and naturalists of the lodge are lovely people and one can easily strike a conversation with them.. The warm hospitality guarantees my desire to return for another stay.

Located on the same Malwa Plateau as Indore, Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh state, positions itself at par with the commercial capital.

Bhopal, the name in itself depicts the live life king size persona and was amongst the largest princely states in the pre-independence era, after Hyderabad.

Bada Talab is home to beautiful birds like Cranes, white storks and black-necked storks. Bird watchers have sighted beautiful and rare birds on this very lake. It also supports many species of plants and microorganisms along with those of reptiles too. 

One can go fishing and boating on the boat club and kayaking and canoeing at the National sailing school which is generally open throughout the course of the day. 

Bhojtaal is of great importance to the locals both culturally and socially. It is also responsible single-handedly to supply drinking water to the residents of Bhopal. There is a grand statue of Raja Bhoj overseeing the lake. It is a tribute to the warrior and legendary king of Indian history who played a significant role in protecting the culture.

Van Vihar National Park 

Van Vihar is a National Park or a drive-through Zoo. It has an amazing combination of wetlands, elevated land, different types of slopes, plains and small and big pools of water hence conserving animals in their natural habitats. 

It is home to all kinds of animals carnivores, herbivores and reptiles and various species of birds too. It is located along the edges of Upper Lake which makes it scenic and greatly popular amongst tourists as well as wildlife enthusiasts and photographers. 

Van Vihar has definitely changed the conventional definition of the zoo. One can not only spot animals here but go on birding trips. It houses a Bird interpretation Center and a Butterfly Park too. It also functions as a rescue, conservation and breeding centre for various animals. It is open from morning 0600 hrs to evening 0600 hrs and closed only on Holi and Diwali.

Taj-ul Masjid 

Taj-ul-Masjid is the largest mosque in India and one of the largest in the world, built by one of the Begums of Bhopal. It is one of the unmissable places to visit in Bhopal. It stands tall within the city limits and clearly visible from multi-storied buildings almost all over the city. 

Its architecture and decorations have great similarities to the Jama Masjid of Delhi. The structure of the mosque comprises three domes and two minarets and is located on the banks of the Motia Talab. The look and grandeur of this mosque are unique and hence the name, Taj-Ul which means the crown of Mosques.

National Museum of Mankind 

If Anthropology interests you, then the National Museum of Mankind is for you. It is curated with the aegis of the Ministry of Culture, Govt of India. 

This museum depicts all the information about human evolution with respect to India and Indian culture. It goes beyond the place and time and shows how humankind evolved in different terrains of the desert, coasts, and mountains as also the tribal habitat. All the exhibits are categorized under Open Exhibitions, Indoor Galleries and temporary exhibits. Visiting this place is quite a knowledge-gaining experience.

Gauhar Mahal

Gauhar Mahal is one of the important and oldest palaces of the Nawabs of the princely state of Bhopal. There is no definite date proof of the construction of the palace but it is assumed that it was constructed during the rule of Nazar Mohammad Khan in early 18th century. The palace was named Gauhar Mahal after Gauhar Begum, wife of Nawab Nazar Mohammad Khan.

The architecture of the palace is a blend of Mughal, Rajput and local style influences. The combination of multi-coloured arches on two pillar built in Diwan-e-khas and the flower leaves on the gate seems to be influenced by Mughal architecture.

Tribal Museum, Bhopal

The area is maintained within a complex which houses a special area as a kid’s play zone, a toy train and a suspension bridge quite akin to the one in Rishikesh, the Laxman Jhula. As the name suggests, Bhimbetka is actually Bhimbaithka, meaning the sitting place of Bhim. 

Located about 45 km south of Bhopal, Bhimbetka is a rock shelter which is declared a world heritage site by UNESCO, having evidence of human habitation in this area of Madhya Pradesh during the stone age. These caves have paintings which range from various eras like Mesolithic and Paleolithic etc. The study of these caves and paintings helps archaeologists to understand the evolution of man through these periods of time.

Place where Tropic of Cancer passes 

Tropic of Cancer is an imaginary line that is parallel to the equator and passes through our country in several states. Sanchi Stupa is one of the oldest structures built in ancient India and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

I am a believer in spending vacation in Indian jungles. They soothe and calm visitors from the hectic technology ridden lives. 

While the tiger reserves in MP (Madhya Pradesh) such as Bandhavgarh, Panna, Kanha and Pench are extremely popular among tourists and wildlife enthusiasts, Satpura takes a backseat when it comes to choosing it for tiger tourism.

There is enough density of big cats in Satpura Tiger Reserve, but the sheer size of the forest makes it a little bit difficult as compared to the popular counterparts.

However, that does not mean Satpura National Park should be left out because it is a haven for sighting many other mammals and birds.

WHERE IS SATPURA TIGER RESERVE?

Satpura Tiger Reserve is a national park located in the Hoshangabad, Betul and Chhindwara districts of Madhya Pradesh. The park is part of the Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve. It is one of the closest reserves from the state capital of Bhopal.

The high mountains, deep gorges and dense forests of Satpura hold secrets bountiful that one can discover only by venturing further into its unexplored terrain. Located in the Hoshangabad, Betul and Chhindwara districts of Madhya Pradesh, Satpura Tiger Reserve, a part of the Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve, attracts a large crowd of tourists each year.

The topography of the park consists of deep gorges, mountains, reservoirs, backwaters and mixed deciduous forests, providing a range of habitats to suit a variety of animals.

WILDLIFE OF SATPURA NATIONAL PARK

Although Satpura is notified as a tiger reserve, the diversity of wildlife is huge. The next best mammal to tiger is the leopard and sloth bear and the sightings between the sal and teak trees is just fantastic.

The reserve was notified in the year 2000 and is home to over 90 species of trees, 50 species of mammals, 300 species of birds, 100 species of butterflies and more than 30 species of reptiles.

Why is Satpura famous?

Satpura National Park is rich in biodiversity of trees and wildlife. The animals here include sloth bear, Indian bison, leopard, sambar, chital, nilgai, dholes (wild dogs), four-horned antelope, wild boar, black buck, gecko, Indian fox, porcupine, flying squirrel, barking deer, and Indian giant squirrel.

The bird diversity is amazing too with birds such as many varieties of owls, eagles, buzzards, kites and hornbills.
Although other animals are seen in most national parks in India such as Manas National Park, Assam, Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand, and Gir National Park, Gujarat, sloth bear is unique for these forests.

Zones in Satpura Tiger Reserve

Satpura is divided into 4 core zones and 4 buffer zones. 

Core zones are Churna, Madhai, Mallupura and Panaarpani while the buffer zones are Pipariya, Jamani Dev, Parsapani and Tamia Delakhari. Madhai and Churna are the most popular of all the entry gates of Satpura National Park.

Satpura National Park has three kinds of safari options – jeep (gypsy), boat and walking. It is possible to book safari online.

Jeep Safari

Depending on the zone, the entry gates are different. One gypsy safari will cost INR 3500/- (includes vehicle and guide charges) and another INR 1500/- for entry permits to the park. The gypsy can accommodate up to 6 visitors other than the gypsy driver and forest guide.

Boat Safari

Boat safari happens in Tawa Reservoir through narrow water inlets of the Denwa River. I did not do the boat safari in Satpura but it surely looked refreshing. I have done boat safari in Periyar National Park because that is the only way to safari there, but the chances of sighting wildlife is less from a boat safari. Still, a fun activity and among the things to do in Satpura.

Tickets for boat safari are available near the office at Madhai gate. Boat safari cost is INR 500/- per person.

Walking safari in Satpura National Park

One of the highlights of Satpura is the option of walking safari in buffer zones. Walking amidst the beautiful teak and sal trees trying to sight wildlife is a thrill worth experiencing. Walking safari is conducted with a trained naturalist and guide who take visitors on a predefined route. The walking safari is offered by hotels and resorts. Ask your resort if they offer one!

There are options of night safari in Satpura as well.

Safari Timings

Morning and afternoon safaris are of 3 hours duration. The morning safari timing is 6 am to 9 am and afternoon is 3 pm to 6 pm. 

There is a possibility of a full day safari in Churna zone that lasts from early morning to noon and again 3 pm to 6 pm.

Safari vehicles

Safari vehicles are jeep or gypsy vehicles that are open from top and side with safety bars to hold on both sides. It is compulsory to enter the tiger reserve in these designated gypsies with an allotted guide and driver.

In Churna zone, tourists can take their own pollution free, four-wheeled vehicle capable of going through the rough forest terrain.

Best time to visit Satpura Tiger Reserve

Satpura National Park is open from mid-October until the end of June. Just like all national parks in India, the Satpura reserve is closed for the monsoon season (July to mid-October). During May and June the temperatures are extremely high such as 40 – 50°C. Winter months are very cold with temperatures as low as 4 – 5°C in early mornings.

Both morning and afternoon safari provide different vantage points for wildlife sightings and I suggest doing both of them from different zones.

Satpura Tiger Reserve Accommodation options

Satpura has 3 forest rest houses at Pachmarhi, 2 at Churna and 1 at Madhai with double bedrooms. These are basic rooms that can be booked through the Satpura Tiger Reserve office.

There are many private hotels and resorts on the Denwa periphery as well as near the other zone gates.

I stayed at the Goldmark Resort which is right on the bank of Tawa Reservoir. The view from most rooms is of the reservoir and is beautiful. Amenities include indoor games, library and pool. The resort can help you book the tickets for Satpura Tiger Reserve.

How To Get Around Satpura National Park

By Air

Bhopal is the closest city from Satpura Tiger Reserve at 150 km connected via flight. From Bhopal, one can hire a taxi to reach the reserve. There aren’t many options for booking a taxi upon arrival so it is best to request a pick-up from the hotel/resort where you are staying.

By Train

Itarsi is a prominent railway junction with trains from all across the country and is just 70 km away. Piparia (40 km), Sohagpur (20 km), Hoshangabad (70 km), Bhopal (140 km), and are well-suited stations for Satpura. There are several trains to these stations on a daily basis. From these stations, one has to hire a taxi.

By Road

One can drive from Bhopal via Hoshangabad city, Betul city or Pipariya town to reach Madhai gate. The best part about reaching the Madai gate is that one has to get on a boat and cross the Denwa river. The commute is included in the safari cost.

SATPURA TIGER RESERVE EXPERIENCE

Why waste a weekend near a tiger reserve by not going there?

My husband and I were to travel to Itarsi for a family function and this question arose. Combining social functions and festivals with wildlife trips is our motto! And hence a trip was planned to Satpura National Park. We called up our go to guide and wildlife planner – Joy of WildchasersIndia and booked 2 safaris to Satpura – our first MP jungle!

Our cousin picked us up from the Itarsi train junction at 9 am and we headed towards Madai in the car. This road trip in February included crossing country roads through wheat fields swaying happily in the crisp cold wind. Briefly it was time for a pit stop that included bhaji wada and chai!

In about 2 hours we reached our hotel on the banks of Tawa Reservoir. After check-in, we napped, freshened up and had lunch.

We walked about 500 meters to the boat jetty. The boat service starts at 2:30 pm and takes visitors to the other bank, to the Madai gate.

Safari in Madai zone

At the Madai gate jeeps were allotted to us with a driver and guide. We entered the gate at 3 pm. 

Our guide gave us a brief introduction about the Satpura reserve – the area covered, the diversity, zones, etc.

20 minutes into the safari, our guide sighted a family of Sloth Bears – a mother with 2 sub-adult cubs. As they crossed the road, sniffed trees and played with each other, our cameras kept busy. We spent a good 15 minutes in their presence and went further. 

The next 2 hours were spent looking for pugmarks, hearing alarm calls of langurs, birdwatching and just soaking in the forest vibe. 

Unfortunately it turned out to be a dry safari (no tiger sightings). However, we saw plenty of crocodiles, spotted deer, sambar deer and birds.

The sunset on Denwa backwaters was extremely picturesque and we spent some peaceful moments on the river bank.

Safari in Churna zone

When Joy told us that there was an option of a full day safari in Satpura Tiger Reserve, we were extremely excited and wanted to make use of it. The excitement further fueled when he informed us that we would be crossing the Madai zone into the core zone of the forest and then entering into the Churna zone.

We followed the same routine – went to the boat jetty, crossed the bank and a safari was allotted to us at Madai to go to Churna.

The cold winter winds made our teeth chatter and froze our hands. But the eyes were open for any movement and ears for any alarm calls.

On this day too, we saw crocodiles, Indian bison, herds of spotter deer, sambar deer and 3 types of owls. 

We took a break and had our breakfast at one of the rest stops in the Churna zone. With yummy parathas, sandwiches, fruits and chai packed by our hotel, we fueled up with the hope of spotting tigers in Satpura.

The jungle provided us many opportunities for the possibility of tiger sightings with alarm calls and fresh pugmarks. Unfortunately, the morning safari turned out to be dry as well, and we headed towards the Churna forest rest house for our lunch.

Here, we met with other wildlife enthusiasts and many stories entertained us from previous days and years. A group showed us their photographs of a leopard from earlier in the day. Another lady shared her experience of sighting a tiger from last year. A scrumptious lunch later, we were pleasantly surprised by a visitor.

Now it was time for the afternoon safari and we drove to all the possible places where tiger territory is. We checked out water holes and other areas. 

Finally, some fresh pugmarks!

The pugmarks stayed with us for almost 2 km and according to our guide the tiger crossed this area when we were lunching!

It was almost 4:30 pm and we had to leave the Churna zone to get into Madai and leave from Madai at 6pm – the gate closing time.

As we drove towards Madai, the pugmarks appeared again, only to disappear in the bushes after a while. Another jeep who had noticed the pugmarks was on standstill as they also heard a faint growl. We waited for a bit for a movement, a call, a growl, but nothing happened.

We drove back to Madai with no sightings of the tiger or leopard but fantastic memories of Satpura jungle.

• You may carry water and snacks in the jeep but do not dispose of plastic or leftover food in the jungle. Keep it in your bag or gypsy and dispose of it safely once you return to the hotel.
• Do not feed anything to wild animals.

About Mandu Madhya Pradesh

Mandu was actually called Shadiabad by its Mughal rulers which literally means ‘City of Joy’.

This small town of Mandu holds around 40 monuments which are etched in history as important and notable places. The monuments, palaces and ruins here are spread across the perimeter of approximately 20 sq. km.

Jahaz Mahal 

Mandu in Madhya Pradesh offers the best of genius work in architecture found in India. Jahaz Mahal, is an engineering extravaganza built during the reign of Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din Khilji the then-ruler of Mandu in the late 15th century who was known to have a royal consortium of 15,000 women. 

Jahaz Mahal was built to accommodate a large number of women’s family members. It is double-storeyed and is located between two artificial lakes (Munj Talao and Kapur Talao) on a narrow strip of land. 

The reflection of Jahaz Mahal can be seen on the water of the lake giving an impression to people that it is floating like a ship and hence the name Jahaz Mahal as Jahaz in Urdu means ‘A ship’. 

Jahaz Mahal is open from 6 am to 7 pm with a nominal entry fee and an extra charge, especially for video shooting.

Hindola Mahal 

Built by Hoshang Shah in the 14th century, Hindola Mahal was reconstructed by Ghiyas-ud-din Khilji by the 15th century. 

The palace gets its name Hindola which means ‘swinging’ because of its sloping side walls. It was constructed in a way to transfer voice from one end to another, especially during the time of royal discussions. 

The Mahal or palace forms part of a larger set of buildings of the royal fort complex comprising Jahaz Mahal, the Hindola Mahal, the Taveli Mahal, and the Nahar Jharokha. 

Have you been to Orchha Fort? There is a similar complex named Orchha fort complex quite similar to this one on the banks of river Betwa. 

Hindola Mahal is T-shaped and was believed to be used as an audience hall or an open-air theatre. In the evening, after the tourists have visited the fort complex, the Hindola Mahal opens for the light and sound show. 

The love story of Baz Bahadur and Rani Roopmati is narrated by renowned actor Ashutosh Rana through a wonderful theatrical execution. It takes us back in time offering emotions of love, happiness and sorrow, tragedy both. It plays in both the languages English and Hindi.

Rani Roopmati’s Mahal 

There is a poignant love story attached to Rani Roomati Mahal from where the name is derived. 

Baz Bahadur was the last independent ruler of Malwa region. Once he was on his hunting expedition and he came across the shepherdess who was a great singer too. Baz Bahadur, who was an ardent lover of music and arts was smitten by her voice and fell in love with her. He told her to accompany him to Mandu his place and she agreed on the condition that she will only live in a palace from where her beloved Narmada river is visible. The palace was built for Rani Roopmati to have a view overlooking her favourite Narmada river. 

However, their love story was short-lived as Baaz Bahadur had to fight a battle with Adham Khan, who was Akbar’s General and ultimately had to flee to save his life as his troops were outnumbered by Akbar’s. 

Roopmati poisoned herself thus ending her life and also the love story. 

Rani Roopmati Mahal shows beautiful patterns of Afghan architecture and was built in phases during different periods.

Rewa Kund

Rewa Kund, built as an extension of Rani Roopmati Mahal and the pavilion, was an artificial lake built to ensure proper water supply to Rani Roopmati Pavilion. 

Rewa is another name for the sacred river Narmada in which the Rani had a deep faith and was a great worshipper. Rani often came here to worship and to pay respects to the divine mother river Narmada. 

Today, it is used as a resting place for tourists as it gives beautiful and serene views to rest, relax and take photographs. Because of the famous love story and the beautiful surroundings, this place becomes an unmissable place to visit in Mandu.

Baaz Bahadur’s Palace 

Baaz Bahadur palace happens to be a twin-storied structure, located on top of the hill and built by Khilji Sultan Nasir-ud-din for the last ruler of Malwa, Baaz Bahadur. 

It houses big courtyards, large halls and terraces giving photography-worthy looks from all angles. It is placed in the vicinity of Rewa Kund which was located as an extension of Rani Roopmati Mahal which she often used to visit. 

The palace depicts an amazing blend of Mughal and Rajput architecture. There is also an octagonal porch which overlooks the beautiful garden. 

When we walk through the palace it speaks about the tales of history and shows us the time from how far we have come from the ancient days of Baz Bahadur to today.

Hoshang Shah’s Tomb 

Mandu, Madhya Pradesh is an outstanding example of Afghan architecture and this tomb is greatly known for its latticework and dome as it is the first ever structure fully made of marble, in India. 

It was constructed before the Taj Mahal and Shah Jahan sent the chief architect to study this tomb and to understand the beauty and intricacies of Afghan architecture. 

The monument has a well-built dome with intricate marble work. The doorway also has bearings of lotus and blue-enamelled stars. 

Jama Masjid, Mandu, Madhya Pradesh

Jama Masjid was built during the reign of Hoshang Shah and completed during the reign of Mahmud Khilji in the 15th century. It places itself near Mandu Bazar and is adjacent to Hoshang Shah’s tomb. 

It has three large domes, a courtyard and fifty-four smaller domes and because of its majestic look and opulence, it is said to be inspired by the Mosque of Damascus. Important monuments like this mosque in Mandu are looked after well by the Bhopal circle of the Archeological Survey of India.

Asharfi Mahal 

Asharfi palace was built during the reign of Mahmud I, the first of the rulers of Khilji dynasty. It is located opposite Jami Masjid and to reach the place there is a flight of steps which becomes distinct in recognizing the place mirroring itself with the placement of a mosque. 

It houses three distinct buildings built at three different times. The first one was a madrasa or a school, the second was a mausoleum and the third was Asharfi Mahal which was commemorated as a tower of victory against the Rana of Chittor. 

Most of the towers and buildings of this place have collapsed and its structure is in ruins now. Locals say that it was built hurriedly and carelessly which led to this breakdown. 

It falls under the reign of the Archaeological Survey of India.

Echo point

Kakra Koh Waterfall

Maheshwar 

Maheswar is located at a distance of 40 km from Mandu and takes approximately an hour to reach by road. Known to be the capital of Holkar state during the 18th century, it is a destination which attracts pilgrims, tourists and shopaholics. 

Along with beautiful ghats on the bank of the river Narmada, it showcases a historic fort which interests history buffs. The Maheswari weavers are famous for their silk and cotton sarees and dress materials as also the accessories made out of it and date back to the 5th century. 

Mhow 

Also known as Ambedkar Nagar, Mhow is an Army Cantonment and is the birthplace of Sh. Bhimrao Ambedkar the author of our Indian constitution. Located around 23 km from Indore, its distance from Mandu is approximately 70 km and it takes one and half hours by road to reach there. It has beautiful pathways and walking areas. 

Once can have a look at the army installations lined on the roads giving a different look to the town. Mhow boasts of great shopping opportunities with smocking (a type of embroidery) dress materials and gowns as also home furnishings at the shops located in the main market.

Omkareshwar

It is located at a distance of around 100 Kms from Mandu along the banks of the sacred river Narmada. There are two jyotirlingas here Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar. The views of ghats and the river are breathtaking and house many temples and shrines. 

One of the biggest tourist attractions here is the Jhula Pul which gives an amazing view of the Narmada river and the temple which is built quite akin to the Laxman Jhoola of Rishikesh.

Dhar 

Dhar city is located in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh like Mandu. This ancient town was founded by Udaji Rao Puar who was a Maratha General and was given the responsibility to expand the Maratha empire here. Dhar houses an amazing fort, a palace, a beautiful mosque and a serene lake making it worth visiting for tourists to spend some time here.

Choral Dam

Summers are scorching in Madhya Pradesh. The heat hinders the energy required for sightseeing. Must try food in Mandu

Dal Paniya 

This is a local delicacy quite similar to that of Daal Baati. Wherein the baati here is first boiled in hot water and then roasted in tandoor. Many restaurants and hotels serve this local food which they are proud of.

Baobab Trees 

Mandu is home to these trees native to Africa and locals call it Khorasani Imli. It is a kind of fruit and can be added to curries for its tangy taste. Local vendors can be seen selling these outside the fort complex and other sightseeing places too.

How to reach Mandu 

By Flight

The nearest airport to Mandu is Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport, Indore. Indore is very well connected to all the metros and major cities of India through various flights which commute on a regular basis. From Indore, one can hire a taxi to Mandu or take a bus from the Sarvate bus stand or Gangwal bus stand. It takes around three hours to reach the place. 

By Train

Mandu does not have its own railway station. The nearest railway station to Mandu is Ratlam, about 124 Kms. It is a major train junction located on the Delhi-Mumbai mainline. From Ratlam too, one can either take a bus or book a taxi to reach Mandu.

By Road 

Mandu is very well connected to major cities of Madhya Pradesh through a good road network.

Places to visit in Orchha

Orchha settled on the banks of the river Betwa and was discovered by the Bundela Rajput King, Maharaja Rudra Pratap Singh in the 16th century. It seems that the town is still dwelling in the grandeur of the past as the monuments here are fresh and still speak about the history they have witnessed and have imprints of all the former rulers, who have contributed immensely to the evolution of this place.

Orchha Fort Complex 

Orchha fort is a complex comprising many structures. Orchha fort complex overlooking the Betwa river sure paints a beautiful picture. It houses the fort, palaces, temples and other important architectural structures. 

The Orchha fort complex is different from the ones in Rajasthan like Kumbhalgarh or the ones in Maharashtra like Lohagad Fort. Rajasthan’s forts were built on Mewar architecture however this one is a blend of local Chandela, Mughal and Mediaeval architecture. It was built by Maharaja Rudra Pratap Singh and more features were added to it by its subsequent kings to beautify it. 

The fort of Orchha depicts the grandeur and stories of valour of Rajput Bundela Kings. One of the major tourist attractions in Orchha is the light and sound show which starts only after the fort is closed for visitors during both the summer and winter seasons. 

The sound of running horses in the background, the lions, war-like situations and the narration of Orchha’s glorious past take visitors deep into history, experiencing it today. It is operational in both Hindi and English languages and has different timings as per the season.  

Raja Palace 

Raja Palace forms a major part of the Orchha fort complex. As the name suggests, it is the main palace where the King and the Queens resided. It was constructed by Raja Rudra Pratap Singh in the 16th century and was later completed by King Madhukar Shah in the 17th century. 

The exterior of the palace is very simple and bare, however, the interiors are very lavish and grand. It is decorated with beautiful architectural designs and murals and has various theme-based works of art about the Gods, Mythical creatures and people. 

A part of this temple has been converted into Ram Raja Temple, dedicated to Lord Ram. As Lord Ram is worshipped here within the palace, this place is the only shrine of Lord Rama in the country where the Lord is worshipped as a King, making it to the list of important places to visit in Orchha.

Sheesh Mahal 

Places to visit in Orchha cannot be complete without visiting the Sheesh Mahal. Once a residential palace of Maharaja Udait Singh, King of Orchha, it was built to give the king a peaceful and private place to rest and retreat. Much like the palace of mirrors in Jaipur and Bhuj, this is similar and opulent. 

A part of this grand palace has also been converted into a modern-day hotel with all the lavish amenities and is accounted as one of India’s major Heritage Hotels. It has Deluxe, Super Deluxe and a Suite for the guests to enjoy the grandeur of a royal stay during their visit. It also helps to organise conferences and destination weddings at the hotel. 

Jahangir Palace 

Orchha in Madhya Pradesh is a place which speaks volumes of friendship and hospitality. The Jahangir palace was built during the 17th century, by Bir Singh Deo for the emperor Jahangir, his friend, on his maiden visit as a gesture of warm welcome. It’s an architectural marvel and is a three-storied structure built around a square with marvellous sculptures, hanging balconies and delicate chhatris. 

Palace depicts beautiful Indo-Islamic architecture and is marked by different courtyards, rooms, intricate balconies and domes. This palace marks evidence of a friendship between two rulers of different communities. It is now under the aegis of the Madhya Pradesh Archeological Department.

Raja Ram Temple | Orchha Temple

It is also known as the Orchha temple and is one of the oldest temples in India and is considered to be very sacred. Built-in the 16th century, this is the only place in India where Lord Rama is worshipped as a King and that too in a palace. A guard of honour is given to the Lord every day and police personnel are deployed as the guards of the King. The food provided to the Lord too is royal in nature. Armed salutation is given to the Lord every day. 

This Orchha temple was built by Raja Madhukar Shah for his queen Ganesh Kuwari. The legend says that Ganesh Kuwari went to Ayodhya to get an image of Lord Rama to enshrine in her new temple in Orchha. However, as the construction of the temple was not complete, the idol of the Lord had to be placed in the palace temporarily. 

When the construction got completed, the idol was to be moved to Chaturbhuj Temple however the idol refused to be removed from its place. As such, the palace was converted into a temple and Lord Rama was worshipped as King. Here, Lord Rama is sitting in Padmasana and spotting his left foot is considered to be very auspicious. This is amongst the unmissable places to visit in Orchha and one of its kind in India.

Chaturbhuj Temple

As the name suggests ‘Chaturbhuj’ means one who has four hands. This temple refers to Rama as an avatar of Vishnu. It was originally built to house an idol of Lord Rama which was brought from Ayodhya to be enshrined here. However, the idol refused to be removed from its place and hence Raja Rama Temple was built within the Palace. The image of Radha Krishna is worshipped here. 

Architecturally, this temple has tall spires in the shape of spine cones four in number resembling the four arms of the Chaturbhuj. It resembles the Basilica in its looks.

Royal Cenotaphs

The purpose of building cenotaphs is to remember and commemorate the great rulers of the Bundela dynasty who gave grandeur and magnificence to this place. 

These are fourteen of the kinds built on the bank of the river Betwa. They were built from the early 16th to 18th centuries. Here too like other structures the architecture is a fine blend of Mughal and Bundela (Rajput) styles and speaks greatly of the cultural influences of that time. 

These are built on a raised platform usually and designed as tall and square shapes with chhatris on the top. Orchha in Madhya Pradesh offers an enigmatic combination of history with spiritualism which marks it boldly on the tourism map. 

Laxmi Narayan Temple

It is built at a place around 2 km from the Orchha Fort Complex, this temple is dedicated to goddess Laxmi, who is the Hindu goddess of wealth. It was initially built by Maharaja Bir Singh Deo in the year 1622 however because of low maintenance it was in a bad shape. 

Later it was reconstructed by Maharaja Prithvi Singh in the year 1793. Like other monuments in Orchha, this temple too is an architectural beauty which is rectangular in shape and the walls depict beautiful paintings and murals. The themes of these paintings are mostly from the Ram Charit Manas and from India’s first struggle for independence in the year 1857. 

Phool bagh 

As the name suggests, Phool bagh is a garden which fascinates visitors with its greenery. It maintains all the aesthetics of the Bundela kingdom. 

It houses beautiful fountains in the centre of the place which has an amazing system of water ventilation and it keeps the area cool. There are two wind-catching towers which are named after the Indian months of Saawan and Bhaddon which are perforated on the top to catch air and the bottom of these towers are connected to the reservoir. The aeration and the water systems are such that it helps the area to cool and hence these are called the cooling towers of Orchha. These are the lone examples of the Persian system of cooling in India.

Rai Parveen Mahal 

Rai Parveen was a great poet and singer and was known as the ‘Nightingale of Orchha’. The palace has three stories and the central hall the palace has beautiful paintings showing the various moods of Rai Parveen. The architecture of the palace is such that it ensures cool temperatures even during heated summer days. It has been seen that the temperature inside the palace is said to be ten degrees lower than the outside temperature. Alongside the palace, there is a beautiful garden, also known as the Anand Mahal Bagh.

Other Attractions in Orchha 

Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary 

Out of the many places to visit in Orchha, Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary offers amazing opportunities for wildlife spotting, birding and photography. It was established in the year 1994 and lies within the area where the Betwa river flows. 

Compared to other wildlife sanctuaries in Madhya Pradesh, this one is small, around 45 sq km. Wildlife enthusiasts may not be able to spot the big cats like Tigers and Leopards however animals like Jackal, Sloth Bear Nilgai and Blue Bull are among the most seen. 

There are around 200 species of birds including the in-house as well as migrant birds which can be seen here. One can spot peafowls, Swan, black swans, peacocks, Jungle bush quail and many more. 

Shahid Smarak of Chandra Shekhar Azad 

Orchha becomes relevant to this legendary hero as he spent a few days here during his days of exile and made a creditable contribution to India’s freedom struggle. It is situated around 4 km from Orchha and gives a comprehensive account of his life spent here.  

Rafting in Orchha 

Amongst all Orchha tourist places, which are bound by history and architecture, rafting gives a different experience and is meant for all the tourists and backpackers who are looking for some adventure during their trip. One can go rafting on the rapids of the Betwa river. There are many institutes in Orchha which arrange and facilitate rafting. Some names are Ram Raja Adventures and Orchha Adventure Camp.

Places to visit near Orchha 

Jhansi 

Located at around 13 km from Orchha and just half an hour’s drive, Jhansi town is well known for India’s struggle for independence. Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi played an epic role in the freedom struggle. It was ruled by Chandela kings in the early 11th century and later was ruled by Peshwa I. Having importance in history, Jhansi houses a magnificent fort, beautiful gardens and Chhatris (Cenotaphs) of its rulers which forms an important part of sightseeing. 

Khajuraho 

The place is known for its beautiful sculptures on temples. There are around 85 temples here, each built in sandstone with various shades of pink, buff and yellow. Located at a distance of around 185 Kms from Orchha, this place is a must-visit for people who are connoisseurs of art.  

Gwalior 

Another historic town closeby to Orchha ka Kila is Gwalior which is located at a distance of 120 Kms or a two hours drive. Being the birthplace of the great Sangeet Samrat Tansen, this city not only boasts of royalty but also is rich in history and cultural heritage. It is famous for grand palaces, temples and a fort. The city has given many leaders in Indian politics like Late Shri Madhav Rao Sindhia and Jyotiraditya Sindhia.

Best time to visit Orchha 

Orchha has hot weather. The temperatures in summer can go up to 45/47 degree celsius making it very difficult and exhausting to go sightseeing.

From September, the temperatures begin to fall making it pleasant. These temperatures keep Orchha vibrant till the month of March. One can visit Orchha between these months.

Ideal months to visit are October and November when the temperatures are cool and the weather clear thus making it ideal for moving around places and sightseeing.

It also houses various pictures, models, graphs and maps which give an exact impression of the actual animals and birds found here. It has marked its place in history as it is one of the oldest museums in Madhya Pradesh.

Along the premises of this place is a beautifully done-up garden with all the seasonal flowers and other local flora. The greenery here is a treat to watch. 

Pandav Caves are open from 7 am to 7 pm, every day.

Dhoopgarh

Dhoopgarh is the highest point in Pachmarhi at a height of 1350 metres and the views from here are breathtaking. 

People come here for the picturesque views of Sunrise and Sunsets. 

At night, the lights of neighbouring towns like Itarsi are visible from here which gives a mesmerising look and is a photographer’s delight. Jata Shankar Caves

In order to reach the caves, there is a flight of steps going into the depth of a ravine between the huge rocks. Moving towards the end of the steps is Trishul of Lord Shiva and naturally formed Lingam. 

I have visited caves having a Shiva lingam at Badami Cave Temples which also has beautiful sculptures and carvings.

If you are interested in Geology and are interested in various formations on the surface and beneath the earth, this place is a must-visit as the caves house the stalactites. I have seen stalactites formation in Meghalaya in India and Halong Bay in Vietnam and the formations are breathtaking!

As per the legend, Lord Shiva hid in this place from Bhramasur. One can find two ponds here, which are enriched by seasonal springs, one with cold water and the other with hot water. The structure of this cave resembles Sheshnag which is a Snake god with 1000 heads. This shrine holds great importance for the locals and the people staying around.

Rajat Pratap Falls

Emerging from the trek of a small Apsara Vihar waterfall through the rocky terrain is a tall waterfall of height 350 feet and stands 30th in India for its height. 

Raja Parapat Waterfalls seems like a silver lining emerging from beautiful greens which is why it is also called Silver Falls.

These offerings on Shivratri are considered to be auspicious and a thanksgiving gesture to the Lord for fulfilling their wishes. The trek is tough however the scenes from the temple are breathtaking and photography worthy.

Priyadarshini Point/ Forsythe Point

Forsythe Point gets its name as Capt Forsythe first came to this place and discovered Pachmarhi. It’s a beautiful viewpoint with various ranges of hills overlapping each other and clad with soft clouds creating a mist in the area. 

Taking a camera to this point is a must. One can reach this point after a trek of about 400 metres and view one of the most exquisite sites in Pachmarhi.

Mahadeo Hills & Gupt Mahadev

Located at around 10-12 km from the Pachmarhi town, Mahadeo Hills is the northern part of the Satpura range. 

These hills are one of the three highest peaks in Pachmarhi and house two ancient temples of Bada Mahadev and Gupt Mahadev. It is 40 feet long and happens to be one of the ancient cave temples in Pachmarhi. 

The inner Sanctorum of this temple is very narrow, one has to actually squeeze in to get there and can accommodate only 7-8 people at a time.  This is a place where spirituality and adventure go hand in hand.

Tawa Dam and Reservoir

Tawa river is a tributary of the Narmada river and Denwa is a tributary of the Tawa river. This dam was constructed keeping in mind the water and hydropower supply to the people of Madhya Pradesh. During the day it is a jewellery market like any other in the city however after the day’s activities are over, this very same market turns into food heaven. The street is very similar to Manek Chowk of Ahmedabad whose history is known through Ahmedabad Heritage Walk. 

Sarafa Bazaar, Indore offers region-specific, mouth-watering dishes which satisfy one’s appetite for awesome food. • Kopra Patties – Native to Indore is Khopra Patties which is a snack item, deep-fried, to be eaten with lots of green and tamarind chutney. Available at Vijay Chat House at both locations in Sarafa Bazar and also at 56 Dukan. Out of all the places to visit in Indore and things to do in Indore, this should not be missed.
• Bhutte Ka Kees –  This dish mainly looks like Upma, made from Corn cob. Green chillies and coriander add to its taste. Available in many shops at both Sarafa Bazar and 56 Dukan
• Shikanji – Shikanji usually is a lemon drink however Shikanji of Indore is quite different from the conventional one. It’s a creamy drink of milk with lots of dry fruits.

• Mawa Bati – It’s typically Gulab Jamun but a dry version. This is available in all sweet shops in Indore.
• Poha-Jalebi – An amazing combination which can be eaten at any time of the day. However, most of the sweet shops offer Poha Jalebi during breakfast time.
• Moong Bhajiya – These are yellow lentil fried dumplings. They can be an amazing evening snack to be eaten especially with tea. 
• Hot dog (Johny Hotdog) – Very specific to 56 Dukan, there is a shop called Johny Hotdog. It offers amazing Hotdogs and is very special to the people of Indore.

On a family trip to Bhopal, while I was looking for places to visit in Bhopal, Bhojeshwar Shiva Temple popped up.

Only 14 km away from the resort, I read about the Bhojpur temple near Bhopal and the more I read the more intrigued I became to visit it. I booked an Uber for a to and fro visit (I will talk about it later in the post) and headed there. My Uber driver decided to be my guide for the visit and told me many things about the Bhojeshwar Shiva Temple, Bhopal.

Bhojeshwar Shiva Temple – History and Legend

The quiet town of Bhojpur in Madhya Pradesh is famous for the Bhojeshwar temple also known as Bhojpur temple, Bhopal). It was built by Raja Bhoj of the Paramara dynasty – the same Rajput king who also founded the city of Bhopal.

According to the legends, the Bhojpur Shiva temple was built in a day in the 11th century. However, the construction was never completed. It is said that Raja Bhoj shifted his focus and resources towards the Somnath temple that was being attacked by the Mughals. Before he could take up the pending work of Bhojeshwar temples, he passed away and the construction remained incomplete. Others say that Raja Bhoj wanted to build this temple in one day and so it remained incomplete after the day’s work.

Excavations at Bhojeshwar Mandir, Bhojpur

It is said that for many years the temple was just a big pile of rocks and stones. On clearing it, it was found that the roof had a gaping hole. For 1000 years the lingam was open to the sky with water pouring down every monsoon and the lingam was damaged. It was only later that ASI managed to repair it in its former glory. A fibreglass cast with an appropriate design for the dome was placed. Currently, the dome appears to be supported on the back of 8 heavenly bodies playing various musical instruments. The damaged lingam was also repaired.

The excavations also revealed that the intent was to build more temples in this place – like a temple complex in Khajuraho.

Bhojeshwar temple in Bhojpur – Madhya Pradesh

As my cab took a turn on the bridge of Betwa River, he pointed towards the rocky sandstone escarpment where a huge structure was seen from a large distance. He shared a memory from his childhood where they would visit this Shiva temple on weekends, take a dip in the Betwa river waters, cross the river on a small boat and reach the caves on the opposite side.

As I inched closer, I marvelled at the ancient architecture. Shops selling puja material now dotted both sides of the road. The car slowed down near an entrance gate and I was surrounded by local shop owners to buy garlands, flowers and leaves for the temple. I respectfully declined and walked towards the temple.

A huge area with stones is the topography around the temple. I stop to read the ASI information board where a monkey joins me and another steals a polybag from a devotee that has a coconut.

I laugh at the notorious monkeys and climb the 20 steep steps to reach the temple. The main Bhojeshwar Shiva temple overlooks 2 small temples that house a Nandi and a small Shivling.

Unlike other temples in India such as Mahakuta Temples, Trimbakeshwar Temple, Kamakhya temple that are adorned with intricately carved sculptures, the walls at Bhojpur Shiva temple, Bhopal are plain. The front façade has idols of gods, goddesses and apsaras. 

Right before entering the garbhagriha (inner sanctum), I noticed a line drawing on a stone. This is a blueprint of Bhojeshwar Shiva temples with details of temple layout, elevation, and pillars. 

I am not prepared for the sheer mightiness of the Shivlinga that stands in the garbhagriha. Four colossal pillars, nearly 40-feet high, hold up a domed ceiling with intricate floral carvings including an inverted lotus. The four brackets that support the cornerstones have sculptures of Shiva-Parvati, Brahma-Savitri, Lakshmi-Narayana and Sita-Rama. At the centre, a three-tiered plinth called Yoni Pitha holds a monolithic 22-foot high Shivalinga. 

I go down to the ground level for a Parikrama of the idol and marvel at the architecture. I feel really tiny overlooking the Shivlinga.

I am engulfed with the Bhojpur temple as it is one of the grandest and tallest Shivling in India, built out of a single rock. 

I finish my Parikrama and rest on the stairs engulfed in the divinity, the cool breeze and lost in the architectural amazement.

Best time to visit Bhojeshwar Temple, Bhopal

Weather-wise Bhojpur has a similar climate as Bhopal meaning summers are harsh and the stone surrounding makes the floor hot to walk on. Monsoon and Winter is the best time to visit this Shiva Temple.

The best time to visit is early morning or late evening when it is cooler and you can spend time around the temple. If you are clubbing the trip with Bhojeshwar temple and Bhimbetka Caves, then visit the temple early in the morning.

Is Bhojeshwar Temple really a temple?

There are theories that indicate that this temple was more a memorial or funerary monument to Raja Bhoj’s father or uncles like the Chhatris or cenotaphs. There was also practice to build temples over the remains of a human being to hasten his journey to the heavens!

Why is Bhojeshwar Shiva Temple called the unfinished temple?

The Mandapa (pillared hall) that is generally present in all Hindu temples does not exist.

The Shikhara main body (tower) is also absent. In spite of this, people have continued to worship in the temple since the 11th century, due to the presence of Shiva Lingam. 

Why was Bhojeshwar Shiva Temple left unfinished?

While there is no definite answer, according to legends these are some of the answers.

• Lack of financial resources 
• Natural calamities such as earthquakes 
• Towards the end of Bhoja reign there were impending wars.
• Raja Bhoj’s deteriorating health
• A calculation mistake that resulted in the roof collapsing that damaged the Shivalinga. As per Hindu Scriptures (Agamas) , one cannot worship in a temple whose idol is damaged. Hence Raja Bhoj  might have stopped the work.

Do’s and Don’ts to plan a trip to Bhojpur 

• Bhojpur town and its nearby areas are extremely hot during the day. I visited in mid-February afternoon but the sun was still too harsh. It is best to carry a cap/hat/stole and sunglasses. 
• Wear clothes that are loose, comfortable and sweat absorbing.
• Wear a pair of comfortable footwear as you will climb steps and walk in the temple premises.
• Carry a bottle of water and some snacks for a quick hunger bite. Keep the snacks tucked in a bag so as not to be visible to the resident monkeys. They will snatch it away!
• Photography is allowed at Bhojeshwar Shiva Temple. 
• It is ideal to club a trip to Bhojpur with Bhimbetka caves from Bhopal.

Sustainable tips to visit Bhojeshwar Shiva Temple

• Like every Hindu temple, devotees are not allowed to wear shoes. Socks are allowed.
• Respect the Hindu culture and do not wear clothes that show too much skin. Cover your shoulders and knees.
• Throw your garbage in the dustbins located at the entrance of each temple.
• Treat the temple premises with respect and do not use them for picnics.
