When Courtyard by Marriott closed for renovation, there was quite a bit of disappointment among the regular customers. The cafe, restaurant and the pool were the highlights of the hotel. However, cheer came back on when the hotel reopened as Le Méridien, Ahmedabad, a premium category in the Marriott group.

Whether you are a local looking for a staycation or you are a tourist staying in the city for Ahmedabad sightseeing or planning to travel around Ahmedabad, or you are here for work, the location of Le Méridien Ahmedabad is the best.

LE MÉRIDIEN AHMEDABAD REVIEW

I was invited for dinner at Bayleaf Restaurant, 2 weeks after the hotel officially reopened. And I requested a detailed hotel tour to better know and review the property.

I was welcomed with a cold beverage and asked to wait for the staff. As I let the high ceiling lobby and its modern chandeliers sink into my photo gallery, Mr Arjun Deoskar, Director, Food & Beverage, and Chef Viklesh Kumar greeted me. 

Over the next 30 minutes, we went over the transition of the property, what has stayed the same, what has changed and what has become better. Here’s the property tour and why I will return for a relaxed staycation soon.

Rooms at Le Méridien, Ahmedabad

The property features 164 guest rooms and suites, each designed with a calm palette, mid-century silhouettes, and bespoke accents that nod to Ahmedabad’s textile legacy and architectural landmarks. Poised as the visual anchor, the bespoke lobby art is an ode to the rich heritage of Ahmedabad, representing a confluence of movement, culture, and life – inviting guests to explore Ahmedabad’s layered legacy at a single glance.

The bedrooms are thoughtfully designed with spaces that feel like a luxurious escape—perfect for the corporate workers and families who want to unwind. 

I particularly loved the way the property is paying homage to the local craft and architectural landmarks with an Ahmedabad map painted in each room.

Dining

Le Méridien Ahmedabad offers an interesting and decadent mix of dining options. 

The Market 

It serves global cuisine with local influence in a lively all-day setting. Present in the vibrant main lobby of the hotel, this is the popular choice of in-house guests as well as visitors who want to dine. 

The buffet options are varied with a mix of vegetarian, non-vegetarian, local and global cuisines. From soups, starters, to mains and desserts, the options are many.

For moments of play, Le Scoop, Le Méridien’s signature programme, delivers sweet frozen treats that savour the flavour of sweet summers.

Java+

Java+ at Le Méridien Ahmedabad is a warm, all-hours café perfect for leisurely coffee, light bites, or casual conversation. Its European-inspired vibe, quality Illy brews, and cosy setting make it a welcome retreat for guests seeking both comfort and coffee culture, all without leaving the hotel.

Drift 

The poolside cafe transitions from a tranquil retreat for intimate meet-ups or post post-swim snack. The non-alcoholic beverage menu is really interesting, and the presentation is even more adorable. 

Bayleaf 

Bayleaf is the Awadhi restaurant which pays homage to the rich culinary traditions of the North-west frontier. The menu is a thoughtful blend of signature tandoor-grilled delicacies and heirloom curries, echoing the opulence of royal kitchens.

We started with a refreshing mocktail and soon were served with appetisers – Channa Jor Poppers, Subz Goolar Kebab and Bayleaf Rajma Galouti. For mains, we devoured Awadhi Dhingri Dolma, Singhara Makhana Palak, Paneer Dum Anari and Dal Bayleaf served with a variety of breads. Ultimately crushed the meal with Kulfi Falooda and Chocolate peanut dessert.

Swimming Pool

The pool at Le Méridien Ahmedabad offers a peaceful and indulgent escape after a tiring day at work. Open till 10 pm, especially to cater to corporate guests, the pool invites guests to unwind while taking in the open skies and an open mocktail bar.

Spa

I found my perfect escape at Explore Spa, a sanctuary where everything is designed to help you rest, relax, and truly unwind. The treatments felt luxurious yet deeply grounding, each one crafted to bring harmony to both mind and body. What I loved most was how the menu draws from authentic local healing traditions — from soothing chakra balancing sessions to the deeply restorative abhyanga massage. It was more than just a spa visit; it felt like a journey back to balance.

HOW TO REACH LE MÉRIDIEN AHMEDABAD

The hotel is located approximately 18 km from Ahmedabad airport, 11km from Kalupur Railway Station and 32 km from Mahatma Mandir Convention Centre, Gandhinagar. The property can arrange pick-up and drop-off, or Uber is also easily available. 

Its proximity to stations, Prahladnagar Corporate Road, Gandhinagar via S G Highway, is excellent, making it the perfect choice for a stay.

FINAL THOUGHTS ABOUT LE MÉRIDIEN AHMEDABAD

Although I only visited the property and had a soulful dinner, I cannot wait to plan a staycation in my own city. 

During my conversation with multiple staff members, I felt that everyone carried a genuine smile at the property. The staff’s warmth and genuine conversations made every moment feel personal, while the cosy yet stylish ambience wrapped me in comfort — hospitality at its finest.

The property blends comfort with sophistication, serving food that beautifully celebrates both local flavours and global tastes.

Based on my visit, I highly recommend Le Méridien as one of the top choices for luxury stays in Ahmedabad.

Out of all the things to do in Kerala, catching mist in Wayanad is a fun and relaxing way to enjoy this North Kerala gem. 

Whether you are on a Kerala road trip or a food journey across the state, or especially coming to Wayanad just to chill in a resort, Wayanad is on the list of all travellers.

Having been to Kerala 4 times over the years, North Kerala was unvisited, and I wanted to change that this time around. Thanks to Kerala Travel Mart 2024, I could finally tick off North Kerala and Wayanad off my list.

And while there are many things to do in Wayanad, relaxing in an amazing property is also a worthy trip. And that is exactly what I did at Great Trails Wayanad by GRT Hotels. 

ABOUT GREAT TRAILS WAYANAD BY GRT HOTELS

GRT Hotels & Resorts is a hospitality chain in South India, part of the larger GRT group. While they have many hotels and resorts in many cities, they have amazing properties in most tourist destinations in South India. While their hospitality is their signature, they are actively involved in sustainability initiatives, promoting practices like no plastic.

Wayanad property had opened only a few months back, and thanks to their partnership with KTM 2024, bloggers were invited to review it. So here’s my honest review about spending 1 day and 1 night at this beautiful property in Wayanad.

GREAT TRAILS WAYANAD BY GRT HOTELS REVIEW

From the winding main road, our driver took a left turn uphill. The sides were surrounded by tall trees as mist clung to them. A few meters ahead, the bus came to a halt.

As we got down from the bus, which was a rather long journey, happy and warm smiles welcomed us to the property.

A traditional welcome with kumkum tilak and a Great Trails-themed hand band made us feel right at home. A cold towel and brisk check-in later, we settled in the common area where we were served a blue pea tea and Unniyappam (sweet rice flour and banana dumplings). 

As we let the view from the property sink in, the property’s general manager, Ms Anu Shinoj, greeted us and invited us for some traditional chai and pakoras. Over the chai, she briefed us about the property and invited us for a tour.

Rooms at Great Trails Wayanad by GRT

The hotel boasts 16 Estate Villas with Balcony, 16 Estate Villas with Verandah and 10 Estate Bungalows. All the villas have colonial-style sit-outs and sloping wooden ceilings, offering stunning views of lush coffee plantations and sweeping valleys.

Each villa is spacious and furnished with extra-large beds, a sofa and a working table. All the bedrooms and bathrooms are fully equipped with contemporary comforts, creating a richly layered, luxurious atmosphere that feels like a sophisticated retreat.

I stayed at the Villa with a Balcony and there were fresh fruits with cutlery and jars with cookies and dry fruits.  The room featured a plush king-sized bed, a smart TV, and a coffee machine—everything needed for a comfortable stay. 

Whether it was sinking into the inviting bathtub after a day exploring Wayanad or enjoying a restful nap on the incredibly soft bed, Great Trails Wayanad by GRT clearly understands how to turn a stay into something special.

Augusta Heights – The Restaurant

Augusta Heights, the restaurant at the hotel, serves up all sorts of Indian and International cuisine for all meals! There are enough vegetarian, non-vegetarian and vegan options for all guests. In case of any dietary requests, meals can be customised on request.

HOW TO REACH GREAT TRAILS WAYANAD

The hotel is located approximately 110 km from Kozhikode, which is the closest city with a railway station and an airport. From there, one must hire a private car to reach Wayanad. Great Trails Wayanad can arrange a pick-up from Kozhikode (110 km) or Kannur (104 km).

FINAL THOUGHTS ABOUT GREAT TRAILS WAYANAD BY GRT HOTELS

This was a short trip to Wayanad, and it was made extremely memorable and beautiful by the property.

My stay was truly relaxing and unforgettable, with every detail thoughtfully curated. The warm, welcoming staff were always happy to engage in a friendly conversation, and the cosy, stylish ambience made me feel instantly at home — a perfect example of exceptional hospitality.

The property strikes the perfect balance between comfort and sophistication, with delicious food that reflects the best of local and global cuisine. Even though my visit was short, the experience left a lasting impression. 

Based on my stay, I’d recommend Great Tails Wayanad as one of the top choices for luxury resorts in Wayanad. I would love to visit again for a longer duration.

McLeodganj, the idyllic town nestled in the Dhauladhar, offers stunning mountain views in every season. This guide covers all the places to visit in McLeodganj and Dharamshala.

My first visit to Mcleodganj was in 2016 when I was volunteering at Triund. But recently I revisited Mcleodganj along with Dharamshala and updated this post to include a few more places in both the towns as well as some day trip options!

ABOUT MCLEODGANJ

Thanks to its pristine location, Mcleodganj is a hub for tourists, adventure junkies, trekking enthusiasts, and Buddhist monks. The Dalai Lama and his Tibetan followers migrated to Dharamshala in 1959, and it has been their home ever since. The Dalai Lama now resides in McLeodganj, a town in the Dharamshala district.

Mcleodganj has since then gained spiritual importance. Just like Rishikesh, McLeodganj has also gained popularity for yoga and meditation camps and is one of the most popular places for tourism in Himachal Pradesh.

Also known as Little Lhasa, Mcleodganj has one of the most stunning landscapes in all seasons of the year. The snowy peaks are especially amazing in the spring. Also Read: Manali Travel Guide

PLACES TO VISIT IN MCLEODGANJ AND DHARAMSHALA

Dharamshala is like any other big city, but serves as an important gateway to the Dhauladhar mountain ranges. Dharamshala also has the most beautiful cricket stadium, and on a clear day, mountain peaks are visible from almost everywhere in the city.

While it is perfectly alright to do nothing in McLeodganj, in case you are visiting for a long weekend in McLeodganj, here are some of the things to do in McLeodganj and places to visit in McLeodganj and Dharamshala.

Tsuglagkhang temple complex, Mcleodganj

Tsuglagkhang temple is one of the major attractions in Mcleodganj not just for the Buddhist monks but also visitors. The complex includes Tsuglagkhang temple, the Namgyal Monastery, Tibetan Museum, a bookstore, a cafe, and a library, along with many shrine rooms having statues of Lord Gautam Buddha, Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), and Chenrezig (Avalokiteśvara).

Except for the Dalai Lama’s residence, visitors can visit other parts of the Tsuglagkhang temple complex. And you can meet the Dalai Lama if you are lucky! The temple is open from 5 am until 8 pm.

Namgyal Monastery, Mcleodganj

The Namgyal Monastery is a historic religious center, located next to the residence of the Dalai Lama within the Tsuglagkhang temple complex. The 16th-century Namgyal Monastery has Buddhist temples and prayer wheels inscribed with the mantra ‘Om mani padme hum’, a Tibetan verse.

Visitors can go around the monastery and witness the many activities happening all around.  When I visited the Namgyal Monastery, it was abuzz with decorations, food preparations, and monks chanting mantras, doing meditation, and performing ceremonies. The entire complex was bubbling with festive fervour. Later I came to know that the Dalai Lama was slated to visit the monastery the next day.

However, bookings were required for entry the next day and so I decided to pass and just soak in the positive and peaceful vibes from the place. From the highest point of the monastery, the snow peaks of the Dhauladhar range were clearly visible. The entire complex is full of lush green environs with trees. In spite of being on the main market road, once inside the complex, it is extremely peaceful.

Visitors are allowed to meditate anywhere in the complex. Entry to the monastery is free and the opening hours are from 9 am to 6 pm daily.  Note: As of December 2020, the monastery is temporarily closed due to Covid-19. Kindly check before your arrival.

Trekking the Triund Hill

Thanks to the beautiful mountain ranges around Mcleodganj, there are options for treks in Dhauladhar. Triund happens to be one of the topmost choices of trekking in Mcleodganj.

Although closed during the heavy snow season, Triund remains open throughout the year and at all times of the day. Triund is popular for one-day treks as well as overnight camping. Located at a height of 9350 feet (2850 meters) the entire trekking path offers gorgeous views of the mountains. It looks especially breathtaking in spring with the rhododendron in full bloom.

Triund rhododendron trek is a must-do! With steep ascents and rocky sub-trails, this 9km long trek rewards visitors with the most stunning views. A clear day will certainly make you fall in love with the mountains, with snow peaking and the sun caressing the valleys.  Camping is possible here if you carry your tents or if you go with local guides.

The only downside of this trek is the absence of toilets at the peak. There is one shop midway and one at the top which serves packet food, Maggi and chai.  There is also a possibility to volunteer with a local NGO and go on clean-up hikes on Triund. Volunteers can accompany the NGO staff which conducts the clean-up hike at Triund every Monday.

The trash is picked up through the entire trekking trail and collected at the mountain top. The trash is sent to Mcleodganj town on mules and further sent for recycling. Talk about plogging done right!  If you love trekking and have strength, ability, and time on hand, you can further trek to Snowline at 10,800 feet. Snowline trek is 2km further than Triund and has steeper ascents than Triund.

If you are camping in Triund overnight, Snowline can be covered the next day, and one can trek back on day 2. It is also possible to camp at Snowline, which also has a snowline cafe. I will highly recommend taking a guide along for the snowline, especially in winter.

Bhagsunath Temple and Bhagsu Falls

A small trek near Dharamkot leads to the Bhagsunath temple and Bhagsu waterfalls. It is one of the most popular places to visit in Mcleodganj and Dharamshala. Located at a height of 5,807 feet, the ancient temple was built by King Bhagsu and dedicated to Lord Shiva and the Snake God – ‘Nag Devta’. If you are staying in Mcleodganj town, Dharamkot can be easily reached on foot and will take 20 minutes.

According to legends, King Bhagsu came to the glaciers in search of water. He was challenged by the Snake God, who was the resident of this region. In the ensuing battle, the King was defeated; however, his plea for water to his fraternity was granted, and the place came to be known as Bhagsunath. The temple attracts a huge number of believers and tourists throughout the year.

Surrounded by freshwater springs and green areas, the springs are said to be sacred and hold healing powers and medicinal properties. The trek to the falls is quite challenging due to the steep ascent, but the views from the top are worth it. Visitors can say their prayers and then take a dip in the adjacent pool.  Walk to the Bhagsu falls nearby and soak in the beauty of nature around.

Bhagsu Falls is one of the most popular Mcleodganj Tourism places so it is extremely crowded at all times. One can take a dive in the bone-chillingly cold water, follow it by relaxing on the rocks and soaking up some rays and panoramic views from the top.

Shiva Cafe at the top of Bhagsu waterfall is extremely popular, and you just cannot go to Bhagsu and not visit Shiva Cafe and post Instagram stories about it. But be patient to get a seat here, especially in the afternoons and weekends.

Dharamkot

A little away from Mcleodganj town, there is a different world altogether. Dharamkot, situated 2 km away, is a cute little village that offers yoga and spiritual retreats. On the crest of a hill above McLeodGanj, Dharamkot quietly enjoys the panoramic views of the Kangra Valley and the Dhauladhar ranges.

Dharamkot has the famous Tushita Meditation Centre, which is a centre for the study and practice of Buddhism in the Tibetan Mahayana tradition, the Vipassana Meditation Centre, and the Dhamma Shikara.  The village is closer to Triund trek and Bhagsu waterfalls, and much peaceful than Mcleodganj, which is why it is a preferred place for accommodation for many backpackers.

Dharamkot also has many homestays and hostel options, which are cheaper than Mcleodganj town. If you have a car, it needs to be parked at Dharamkot square and carry the luggage by your own.

Dal Lake

Yes, there is a Dal lake in Mcleodganj! Located near the village of Tota Rani, the lake is 4k away from Mcleodganj. Probably 1/100th the size of the actual one, Dal Lake Mcleodganj is a small lake that is surrounded by deodar trees. It has a Lord Shiva temple on its bank. The lake is a good tourist spot for families who want to enjoy some boating. Kids can especially enjoy boating as there are many varieties of fish.

Kangra Fort

Located at a distance of 28 km from Mcleodganj, the 4th-century fort is one of the oldest forts in the country and the biggest fort in the Himalayas. Kangra Fort is the 8th largest fort in India  – covering an area of 463 acres. It was built by Maharaja Susharma Chandra, a descendant of the Katoch dynasty, the oldest living dynasties.

Despite over 50 invasions, it still stands tall after a lot of centuries. The Kangra Fort lies on a patch of land between the Manjhi and Banganga rivers and offers prominent views of the Kangra valley in all four directions. The fort boasts 11 gates, 23 bastions, alleyways, vast courtyards, and ancient temples within its premises.

The highest point is occupied by the palace courtyard, below which there is a large courtyard containing the stone-carved temples of Laxmi Narayan, Ambika Devi, and the Jain Temple Visitors can get a detailed understanding of the fort by visiting the Maharaja Sansar Chand Katoch Museum, situated right next to the fort.

Visiting the Kangra Fort from Mcleodganj will easily consume half the day. The fort itself will require 2-3 hours. So it is best to plan accordingly. Just near the car park, there was a small shop called ‘ Anand tea stall’ serving refreshments. I was too tempted by the lady making aloo parathas and decided to try one. I ended up hogging many. It was too delicious, especially after that trek!

Naddi View Point

Trekking to Naddi is another option while in Mcleodganj. Situated 3km from the central town, Naddi is a small village that offers breathtaking views of the mighty Dhauladhar mountains and the vast expanse of Kangra valley. Just like Dharamkot, this village offers many homestays for the peace-loving crowds who want to curl up with the mountain views.

Naddi viewpoint or Naddi sunset viewpoint is one of the best places to visit in Mcleodganj and Dharamshala. By following the directions from the main roads, one ends up on a non-tar road with a signboard ‘Naddi viewpoint’.

One needs to cross a few street-side vendors to come to a point where telescopes are installed. And the view is just breathtaking! I visited on a cloudy evening so I could not witness the sunset but nevertheless, the views were amazing.

Church of St. Johns

The 19th-century neo-Gothic architectural marvel is the Church of St Jones in a forest, which is why it is called St John’s church in the wilderness. Built by the Britishers for the troops and families, the area around also serves as the final resting place of Lord Ergin, governor-general and viceroy of India during the British Raj.  Constructed of hand-cut granite, it is one of the only buildings which remained after the 1905 earthquake.

HPCA Stadium

Whether you love cricket or not, you cannot not visit HPCA Stadium if you are visiting Dharamshala. It is one of the best places to visit in Dharamshala and Mcleodganj.

HPCA stands for Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium and is the highest altitude cricket stadium in the world. It overlooks the beautiful Dhauladhar range from the seating area, making it one of the best places to view cricket matches with a view.

Visitors can enter the stadium from Gate No. 5. Just ensure that there are no matches scheduled on the day you plan to visit.

War Memorial, Dharamshala

The War Memorial in Dharamshala stands as a moving tribute to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the 1947–48 battles, the Indo-China War of 1962, the wars of 1965 and 1971, and various UN Peacekeeping missions. Dominated by three striking black stone panels, each rising 24 feet high, this solemn site honours their unwavering courage and heroism.

Around the memorial is a well-maintained, manicured garden with animal statues. A quick visit can be done while on the way to Mcleodganj.

Tea Gardens in Dharamshala

I did not know tea gardens existed in Dharamshala until my second visit, recently! Narghota Tea Estate and Factory, located 2km away from the War Memorial, is an amazing place to spend the evening and click photos.

Since I have visited tea factories in Manas, Munnar and Kandy I decided to skip the factory visit here and just take a walk around the tea gardens on one side of the narrow road and the mountains on the other side.

Norbulingka Institute of Tibetan Culture

A beautiful place tucked away in a corner of Dharamshala, Norbulingka Institute is a great way to spend a peaceful afternoon.

During my recent visit to Norbulingka, I was impressed by their commitment to preserving Tibetan art through sustainable practices. Guided by master artisans, the institute empowers a community of over 300 Tibetans by passing down age-old techniques and traditions in painting, woodwork work and traditional clothing.

I saw firsthand the incredible craftsmanship and the living legacy of Tibetan culture. It’s an experience I’d highly recommend to anyone with an appreciation for art and heritage. Visitors can enrol in some of the art workshops that take place here.

The campus has a monastery and a losel doll museum, which is extremely beautiful. There is a cafe, restaurant and a momo joint which ensures visitors have a good time to sit, relax and take in the atmosphere.

There are 10 guestrooms available, too, where visitors can stay overnight.

Bir

Popular as one of the best places for paragliding in India, the hills in Bir-Billing have a perfect place for lift-off and glide without obstructions. Many adventure enthusiasts travel to Bir-Billing only for this sport.

Even novices can try their first flight off if you are not scared on heights and get that adrenaline pumping! The cost of each flight per person varies between INR 5000 – 15000, which depends on the length of the flight. SHOPPING IN MCLEODGANJ AND DHARAMSHALA

Shopping is a retail therapy in Mcleodganj. With an array of things to buy in Mcleodganj and souvenirs from Mcleodganj, the options are many. From Thangka paintings to Tibetan carpets, from jewellery to artefacts, handicrafts to books, from cakes to winter wear, the options are unending on what to buy in Mcleodganj.

One of the main places to visit in McLeodganj is the Main Market. The entire street and around is lined with shops. There are plenty of bakeries and small restaurants around,d too. It is best to explore them on foot so as not to miss out on quaint cafes and cute stores.

If you want to buy affordable souvenirs from Mcleodganj as gifts for your friends, I will suggest picking up Buddhist prayer flags, beaded jewellery, yak mittens, or shawl.

WHAT TO EAT (AND WHERE) IN MCLEODGANJ | CAFES IN MCLEODGANJ

With a lot of Tibetan influence, the entire town of Mcleodganj has many options of Momos and Thukpa. Since there are a lot of visitors from European countries, Mcleodganj cuisine offers a lot of continental dishes such as pizzas, lasagnas, pasta, pancakes, hummus, and Shakshuka. The bakeries are amazing as well and have delicious cakes, cheesecakes, and croissants. Being a spiritual town, many cafes and restaurants are offering vegan menus in addition to vegetarian options.

Momos in Mcleodganj

Momos are Tibetan dumplings that are usually stuffed with pork, chicken, or veggies. They are served with red chilli chutney. There are way too many restaurants and street vendors selling momos in Mcleodganj, and it is hard to pick one place which is the best. I tried momos in Trek N Dine in Dharamkot and a couple of street vendors (vegetarian versions), and all were great.

Bhagsu Cake

BEST TIME TO VISIT MCLEODGANJ AND DHARAMSHALA

According to me, the best time to visit Mcleodganj is spring, between March and April. The weather is not too hot or cold for treks. There is still snow on mountain peaks, and the nip in the air is perfect for walking around without wrapping too many layers. The rhododendrons are in full bloom, which looks extremely pretty around the town.  Summers are also pleasant to visit Mcleodganj with maximum temperatures hovering at 30°C. But if you want to witness the snow, then winter is ideal. Storms are not quite common here as the region receives heavy rain annually. It is best to avoid July and August due to the heavy rainfall.

HOW TO REACH MCLEODGANJ AND DHARAMSHALA

By air

The nearest airport to Mcleodganj is Kangra Gaggal Airport, also called Dharamshala airport. It is located at a distance of 20 km from McLeodganj. Private cabs can be booked from the airport to reach Mcleodganj.

By Train 

The closest railway station to Mcleodganj is in Pathankot. Trains from the south and north stop here.  There are two options to reach Mcleodganj from Pathankot – take a taxi or a public bus to Mcleodganj. The taxi takes around 1.5 hours, depending on the traffic, and the buses take 3 to 4 hours since they stop at many villages to pick and drop people.

By Bus

Private buses of all kinds (air-conditioned, Volvo, sleeper, semi-sleeper) leave from Delhi (Majnu ka Tilla, Kashmiri gate) for Mcleodganj. It is an overnight comfortable journey of 10-12 hours. They drop at the Mcleodganj bus stand.

Bike rent in Mcleodganj

It is possible to rent bikes in Mcleodganj. There are many local shops in the main market which offer these services. Visitors also have the option to rent a 2-wheeler from many rental vendors in the city. The vendors drop the vehicle at your hotel and pick it up. The rent range is between INR 300-500 per day.

‘Welcome to the Queen of Arabian Sea, a melting pot of all cultures’ said Satish, my guide, who picked us up from our hotel while heading to the Fort Kochi area. He informed us how Kochi is surrounded by backwaters and has many bridges to cross to small islands. After a brief background about Kochi city, he told us the history of Fort Kochi and how it has embraced many religions and cultures throughout the centuries.

I was on my third trip to Kochi, but I never explored the Kochi city or the Fort Kochi area, as I used it only as a transit point for my road trip in Kerala. But I was excited to explore it this time.

ABOUT FORT KOCHI

Fort Kochi is India’s historic port town with roots in the 14th century and influenced by a flow of European, Egyptian, Arab and Chinese merchants. Kochi was part of the silk and spice route for these traders. 

Kochi is a mix of small islands, and Fort Kochi and Mattancherry are the historic colonial areas within the city limits. Fort Kochi is primarily home to the Christians influenced by the European settlers. While Mattancherry is the vibrant trade centre and home to the Jews, Muslims and Hindus.

Due to the colonial influence, Fort Kochi has many heritage buildings that are over 500 years old. Not only buildings, but many historical records, antiquities and even the mortal remains of important traders still find a place in Fort Kochi. Most of these are now part of the tourist circuit in Fort Kochi.

HISTORY OF FORT KOCHI

Fort Kochi was a fishing village in pre-colonial Kerala. The Portuguese arrived in 1498 during the Age of Discovery, and the Cochin king allowed the Portuguese to settle in the Fort Kochi area for 160 years. 

The ‘Fort’ in Fort Kochi comes from Fort Emmanuel, which was constructed to protect their commercial interests. However, the Dutch later destroyed it. The Dutch ruled Fort Kochi for 112 years.

It was later captured by the British, who ruled the place for 152 years.

With such a diverse history of colonisation, Fort Kochi is now a treasure trove for tourists. 

BEST TIME TO VISIT FORT KOCHI

Kochi remains hot and humid all year round, but winters (November to February) are by far the best time to visit Kochi, as the weather is very pleasant. Summer in Cochin can get extremely hot and humid, and temperatures begin to rise in March. I went in the first week of May, and the outdoors were uncomfortable.

If you want to see the Onam celebrations in Kochi, September is the time when the festival happens. The Snake boat race also takes place at the same time

HOW TO GET TO FORT KOCHI FROM KOCHI AIRPORT

Fort Kochi to Cochin International Airport is 30 km. It roughly takes 1.5 hours because of heavy traffic. Government bus service is available at a cheaper cost (INR 90) while app-based taxi and pre-paid taxi services are also available from the airport. Taxis charge anything between INR 1200 to INR 1800 one way from the airport.

Getting around Fort Kochi and Mattancherry

The best way to get around Fort Kochi and Mattancherry is by walking or by bike. Hire a local guide who can take you around Fort Kochi, exploring the quaint neighbourhoods and heritage mansions.

Since we had about 4 hours in hand, we combined the best of these 2 itineraries and explored all that we could in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry.

BEST THINGS TO DO IN FORT KOCHI

We parked somewhere near the Dutch cemetery and started our walk through the shaded pathways of the Dutch colony. The following sums up my experience and all the things to do in Fort Kochi in one day.

Walk along the Dutch Colony road

Get friendly with the peaceful and clean roads with cobbled pavements, antique-looking street lights and heritage mansions. Just soak in the architecture of how these colonial mansions have now turned into boutique shops, Airbnb and even government offices.

Pay homage to the Dutch Cemetery

The tombstones here are the most authentic record of the hundreds of Dutch people who left their homeland in a mission to expand their colonial empires and who changed the course of the history of the land they conquered. The cemetery was consecrated in 1724 and is now managed by the Church of South India.

The gate to the Cemetery is generally closed, but visitors can peek in through the gate and notice the Portuguese inscriptions on the tombstones.

Visit the Vasco House, Fort Kochi

Believed to have been the residence of Vasco da Gama, Vasco House is one of the oldest Portuguese residences in Fort Kochi. It is now a private residence and offers a heritage home stay facility. 

Visit the St. Francis Church, Cochin

Built in 1503 by the Portuguese, this is believed to be India’s oldest European church. The church was initially built of wood and was a rather humble-looking church following Roman Catholic preachings.

It was captured by the Dutch and then by the British. It was later reconstructed in stone. 

The church has always been important, as the explorer Vasco da Gama was buried here in 1524. His mortal remains were later moved to Lisbon, Portugal. But his tomb was taken inside the church during renovation. This visit to St. Francis Church is one of the most historical things to do in Fort Kochi.

This humble church is one of the best tourist attractions in Kochi. It is still an active church wherein over 250 families take part in the Sunday mass. 

One of the most striking features of the church is the manual fan that is hung from rods on either side of the room. In the olden times, without electricity, people stood on the side of the rod’s end and pulled ropes to make the fabric swing and generate a breeze. One of the specialities of these fabric swings was that they used to be stuffed with herbal roots. The fabric was then sprinkled with water. On swinging, this fabric, laden with herbs and water, is used to provide cool relief during hot and humid months. 

The church has Victorian tiles in the centre of the church from the British era. The church still has instruments (mouth organ, piano, wooden pulpit, reading desk) from the bygone era and the same are being used and played during the Sunday mass. 

St. Francis Church Timings: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm (Monday–Friday), 9:00 am – 1:00 pm on Saturday, and 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm on Sundays.

Visit Bastion Bungalow

Head to the 17th-century Indo-European architecture mansion called Bastian Bungalow. It was used as a residential building during the British period. At present, it is used as the residence of the Sub-Collector of Kochi. The Bungalow on top of the Bastion is in European style with large rooms and high roof ceilings.

It is a protected monument and a heritage museum with a large collection of artefacts.

Bastion Bungalow Timings: Open all days from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm (Lunch break 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm).

Explore Vasco Da Gama Square

Head to the square, which is always active with many things to do in Fort Kochi. The steam boiler exhibit is hard to miss as soon as one enters. Steam Boilers from a dredger are installed near the walkway at Fort Kochi beach. 

The square is also popular for souvenir shopping in Fort Kochi, with street vendors selling street food, souvenirs and ice creams.

Kochi overlooks the Chinese Fishing Nets and the ships that come and go. The beach also overlooks a factory, which makes the beach not such a great place to hang out. The beach is also dirty, which makes you think twice before dipping your feet in the water.

Chinese Fishing Nets, Fort Kochi

Locally known as ‘Cheenavala‘ and popularly known as Chinese Fishing Nets, they were introduced in the 14th Century by a Chinese explorer in Kochi. This method is said to be one of the oldest and most traditional fishing methods in the world. Visiting the Chinese Fishing nets is one of the Kochi Bucketlist places and most popular things to do in Fort Kochi.

Earlier, the nets used to be smaller, where one fisherman could manage the operation. However, now the entire Chinese fishing net assembly weighs over 250 kg and requires 4-5 men on deck for work. Fishing is usually done in the morning and early evening.

The structure is made of teak wood and bamboo poles, which are 10m high, fixed on the beach and has a cantilever with an attached net that is spread over an area of about 20 meters. Stones as counterweights are tied to ropes of different lengths that facilitate the working of the nets. 

The net is lowered into the water for a short time and then raised delicately by pulling on the ropes. The fish catch is collected by a sail net, segregated and stored.  The caught fish is sold in nearby markets by auction. Unwanted fish that do not have any selling value are returned to the sea. 

Only 8 Chinese Fishing Nets remain here in Fort Kochi and are part of the city’s Heritage. 

Watching this procedure from a distance is free, but in case you want to walk on the planks and see the process up close, the fishermen charge money. Worth the Instagram shot? Absolutely!

Kerala Kathakali Centre

A trip to the Kerala Kathakali centre is highly recommended while in Fort Kochi. The centre showcases traditional dance – Kathakali and martial arts – Kalaripayattu every day. 

Kalaripayattu is one of the oldest martial art forms in the world that originated in Kerala in the 3rd century. Considered among the oldest and most scientific martial arts in the world, the word ‘Kalari’ literally means ‘battlefield’ and ‘payattu’ means ‘training of martial arts. Kalaripayattu uses weapons such as swords and daggers, sticks, spears, maces, axes, arrows, discuses, catapults, boomerangs and others.

Kathakali is a form of classical Indian dance. It is unique as it is distinguished by the elaborately colourful make-up, costumes and facemasks that the traditionally male actor-dancers wear. The dance form is associated with storytelling through dance.

Tickets can be bought on the Centre’s premises ahead of the performance. Ticket price: INR 300 per person, and the duration is one hour.

Visit Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, Fort Kochi

Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Fort Kochi. Built in 1558 by the Portuguese, it was later destroyed by the British in the 19th century. On the same ground, a bishop rebuilt the cathedral, and it was proclaimed a Basilica in the early 20th century.

The stained glass in the interior, the Gothic architecture and the murals give a European vibe. It surely reminded me of St. Mary’s Basilica in Krakow, Poland.

Santa Cruz Cathedral timings: (Monday to Saturday) 9:00 am – 1:00 pm and 2:30 pm – 5:30 pm,  Sunday: 10:30 am – 1:00 pm. It is closed on the first Friday of every month.

Praise the Fort Kochi Street Art

With many art galleries to boast of in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry, visitors can get a flavour of art on the streets too. Everywhere around Vasco da Gama Square and Mattancherry, visitors cannot miss the wall art on the walls. Burger Street is also a lane full of colourful corners and walls. The street art is done by local and international artists. Portraits, murals, and graffiti in different shapes, sizes and colours adorn the walls.

This street art is done every year during the Muziris Biennale – A contemporary art event where art sessions, art exhibitions, talks, workshops, educational performances, film screenings, etc, are held. Happening worldwide, Kochi is also a host of this festival.

Because of the pandemic, Muziris Biennale was not held for 2 years, which has made the murals fade away in most areas. Kochi-Muziris Biennale is set to open on December 12, 2022, and will run for four months, till April 10, 2023.

Must-visit art galleries in Fort Kochi are the Durbar Hall Art Gallery, David Hall and OED Art Gallery.

Getting Ayurvedic Treatments in Fort Kochi

Kerala is home to the ancient tradition of Ayurveda. While Thekkady is a more popular place for getting these treatments, Fort Kochi also offers Ayurvedic massages for tourists who are not travelling elsewhere.

Ayurville is one of the most recommended places in Fort Kochi for getting Ayurvedic treatment. It offers long-duration retreats with stay and food for holistic healing. The treatment solutions are for people suffering from chronic ailments.

Cafe Hopping at Fort Kochi

There is a strong coffee and art culture in Fort Kochi, and if you are visiting here, then cafe hopping in Fort Kochi is one of the best things to do in Fort Kochi. There are many coffee shops and cafes dotted around Fort Kochi, and it can truly be challenging to choose one to visit during a Kochi day trip.

Kashi Art Café

Kashi Art Café is the most popular café in Fort Kochi and was recommended by at least 4 people to visit.

I visited it in the morning around 10:30 am, and it was already full with locals and tourists grabbing some breakfast overlooking some unique installations. The cafe has a relaxing ambience and is full of green vibes. There are shrubs and creepers everywhere, as well as some contemporary artwork displayed at the entrance.

I tried the ginger lemon soda as I was full, not looking for food, and it was decent. The food looked appetising and I promised myself to come back here during a more relaxed time.

Brunton Boatyard 

The colonial-style building right by the harbour is hard to miss. With splendid views of the waterways and this cafe is the perfect place to enjoy a sundowner.

Fort House Hotel 

Fort House Hotel serves authentic Keralan cuisine at its waterfront restaurant. This family-run hotel provides panoramic views from the table. Some of the must-try dishes here are Ginger-garlic prawns with appams and fish with green mango curry.  

The Jetty Restaurant at the Forte Kochi Hotel 

Located in the Heritage property on Princess Street, Forte Kochi Hotel is a beautiful place to stay, visit and dine. Jetty Restaurant is a poolside restaurant that serves delicious vegetarian and non-vegetarian varieties of Indian and International cuisines. 

Ginger House & Hotel 

A perfect lunch spot is Ginger House after all the walking and shopping for antique gift articles in Jew Town. This is a waterfront restaurant that is extremely green, vibrant and very different from what you may see.

Built in a typical colonial style with ornate woodwork and glass-paned windows, it is a must-visit place in Kochi.

It is an open-air restaurant overlooking the Kochi waterways, has a huge garden and is decorated with antique art and crafts all across.

BEST THINGS TO DO NEAR FORT KOCHI – MATTANCHERRY AND JEW TOWN

While Fort Kochi always hog the limelight, its neighbouring areas are nothing but a treasure trove and a must-visit in Kochi. A short ride away from Fort Kochi is Mattancherry and Jew Town, both tourist attractions offering unique places to see in Kochi.

Take a walk on the Palace Road

On the way to Mattancherry Palace, stop near the bustling streets to interact with the locals or simply observe them going about their lives. One can still find several traders selling spices as well as various religious places here: Temples, churches and mosques.

On the walk, we saw many fruit vendors and grocery stores selling unique items that are very particular to Kerala. Puja items and flower garlands for hair were also on display at many places.

We also visited a spice flour factory and a house making rice papads.

Pay respect at Cochin Thirumala Devaswom

Chochin Thirumala Devaswom is a temple with Sri Venkateswara as the main presiding deity.

The temple is a must-visit for its architecture. The double-storied northern tower or Gopuram is done in Pagoda style, which is influenced by the Indo-Tibetan architecture. It has a copper-plated roof and wooden carvings depicting scenes from holy relics.

Another important feature of the temple is its bronze bell. Every Hindu temple is known to have a bell or sometimes even multiple bells. However, Cochin Thirumala Devaswom has the largest bell in Asia in front of the main hall of the temple. The southern end before the main hall is richly decorated with chandeliers, domes and wooden sculptures. The exquisite carvings on the inner ceilings depict scenes from Ramayana, Mahabharata and Bhagwat.

Note: Only Hindu worshippers are allowed inside the temple. Worshippers have to strictly adhere to the traditional dress while entering the temple – women have to wear a saree, and men in a dhoti.

Visit the Mattancherry Palace Museum

If you think you are visiting a Palace like the ones in Udaipur or Jaipur, then you will be disappointed.

Mattancherry Palace Museum is a humble-looking 2-storey plan building overlooking a pond lined by coconut trees. 

Mattancherry Palace Museum is one of the oldest buildings in the Portuguese architectural style. Built in the 16th century, it was gifted to Bira Kerala Varma as an apology for plundering a temple nearby. It was accepted by the king and served as a set of the Royal House and hence was called a palace.

The palace underwent a major renovation in the later part of the 16th century at the hands of the Dutch and hence is also known as the ‘Dutch Palace’.

The palace is a perfect blend of Indo-European architecture. The Palace museum consists of a coronation hall, bed chambers, ladies chamber, royal dining hall and other rooms. The highlight of the palace lies in its wooden ceilings, murals and paintings covering over 300 square meters of area. The murals depict scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharat, and legends connected to Indian gods like Vishnu, Krishna and Durga.

The museum also exhibits oil portraits of the Kings of Cochin, their palanquins, dresses, weapons, coins and weapons.

Shop for Vintage collectables

After coming out of the Mattancherry Palace Museum, our guide made us take a shortcut, and we reached the backyard of scraps.

On going further, these scraps took shape in the form of antiques. This is when we realised we were in the antique market in Jew Town.

Jew Town in Kochi is the biggest antique market in India. Each shop is divided into sections and sub-sections, and honestly, it is like a maze where you keep moving without finding an exit. It is very easy to get lost in the antique market of Jew Town, so best to move around with a guide.

The antique shops here have a rich collection of antiques, crafts and spices in heritage buildings. Shops that look and feel as old as time are filled to the brim with antiques that are beautifully cared for and displayed. Some of the most pristine and historically relevant artefacts can be found here. They are like fractions of history, waiting for the right person to come and finally claim them. 

Shops towering over 2 storeys high with a basement are nothing short of a treasure waiting to be explored.

Visit the World’s longest canoe boat

Canoe boats are special for Kerala as they participate in Vallam kali, the traditional boat race in Kerala that is held every year during the season of the harvest festival, Onam. This sporting event – Vallam Kali, also known as Kerala Snake Boat Race, is a huge attraction in Kerala, and sporting enthusiasts visit the race from near and far. Each canoe boat is about 100 feet long and has a seating capacity of 150 men. Each boat is meticulously crafted by skilled craftsmen using local teak wood.

A 107-year-old wooden canoe boat is on display in one of the most humble-looking shops in the labyrinth lanes of Jew Town. It is no less than an art, and one can praise the fine craftsmanship of making this snake boat, which was once a pride of the backwaters.

It is displayed at a shop 2 doors away from the entrance of Ginger House and Hotel.

Visit the world’s largest cooking vessel, ‘Varpu’

Another gem often missed by tourists in Jew Town is the display of the world’s largest ‘Varpu’. Varpu or Uruli can be translated as a cooking vessel. This huge cooking vessel is made of bronze, has a 12-foot diameter and weighs 3184 kilograms. Made in 2004 by the lost wax method by the craftsman in Munnar, it took 13 months for 30 craftsmen and 160 artisans to make it.

The vessel was crafted in a 14-foot trench, and the mould was fired for 30 hours continuously.

It is displayed at a store called ‘Crafters’.

Try Aromatherapy in Jew Town

Incense sticks, perfumes and attars all made from endemic flowers are found in shops around Jew Town.  Take a seat as the experts demonstrate various aromas and fragrances by placing a small drop of oil on your hand. Rub it and try to guess which flower is responsible for it. A small apparatus displayed at the shop gives the idea of how oils are removed from flowers

The oils removed from the flowers are used as base fragrances in many designer perfumes and body mists.

Walk the quaint streets of Jew Town

Jew town, as the name suggests, was a neighbourhood where Jews lived. Only 2 families live here now. But the colourful streets and vibrant shops are a must-visit place in Kochi.

Jew Town is a narrow shopping street that leads up to the Jewish synagogue, Kochi. There are shops and art galleries on both sides of the street selling antiques, relics, Kerala souvenirs, handicrafts and clothes. It is a walking street with no motor activity allowed and is painted as though a street straight from the European markets.

Spice shopping on Bazaar Road in Mattancherry

Coming to Kerala and not shopping for spices is a crime! Kerala is known for its spices that are grown all over the state. Green cardamom, cloves, pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg are some of the must-buy spices in Kerala. They are known for good quality and are adulteration-free.

Explore the Paradesi Synagogue, Kochi

Walk to the end of Jew Street to reach Pardesi Synagogue. Pardesi means foreign, and locals called the Jews “paradesis” or foreigners in the local language. That is how the Jewish Synagogue got its name, Pardesi Synagogue. 

This 16th-century synagogue was constructed after the Cochin Jews were them land. Paradesi Synagogue is the oldest and most active one in Kochi.

A blossomed pink Bougainvillaea near the entrance is quite a spectacle, and the guard at the entrance requests visitors to put their phone in switch-off mode or hide it away in their bag. Photography is not allowed in the synagogue.

Hand-painted porcelain tiles from China, Belgian chandeliers, and the brass-railed pulpit demonstrate the charm of the bygone era. Spend some time in the sitting area just soaking in the interiors. 

Pardesi synagogue timings: Sunday to Thursday – 10:00 am – 6:00 pm, and Friday 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. Pardesi Synagogue is closed on Saturday.

THINGS TO DO IN KOCHI IN AREAS OTHER THAN FORT KOCHI

Explore the Aluva Spice Market

While there are spice shops across Fort Kochi, they are a bit on the pricier side because of the tourist area. The spice market in Aluva is a wholesale market which supplies spices to these shops in Fort Kochi, Kerala and the entire nation. Hence, the prices here are lower and the quality is fabulous. The only downside is that one must purchase a minimum quantity of 250 g or 500 g, depending on the spice.

Ride the Kochi Water Metro

Kochi Water Metro is the first-ever water metro in India, and it only makes sense to ride it if you are in Kochi. The Kochi Water Metro is an eco-friendly transport initiative that links different parts of the city via an extensive network of waterways. Designed to ease traffic congestion and enhance urban connectivity, the project champions sustainable mobility for a greener future.

 I took the metro from High Court to Fort Kochi and paid INR 40 for this 15-minute scenic ride.

Visit the Kerala Folklore Museum

The Kerala Folklore Museum is a privately run, three‑storied wooden marvel which has an amazing collection of artefacts from Kerala.  Inside, over 4,000 to 6,000 artefacts, including masks, ancient stone‑age tools, sculptures in wood, bronze, and stone, ritual costumes, manuscripts, musical instruments, and tribal art, paint a vivid picture of Kerala’s folklore and cultural traditions 

Each floor tells a different story: the ground level features tribal art, masks, and ritual objects; the first floor, Kalithattu, displays elaborate dance costumes for Theyyam, Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, and Ottanthullal; while the second floor, Kanjadalam, boasts dramatic murals and a sculpted wooden ceiling.

Dutch Bungalow, Fort Kochi

If you are looking for something less expensive, try the Dutch Bungalow. Built in 1668 by the Dutch, the mansion is more than 350 years old. The rooms have lofty ceilings, a separate living area, huge bathrooms, and a beautiful, rustic feel about them. I stayed here when visiting Fort Kochi and had an absolutely amazing time.

Mansions are the best way to stay in Fort Kochi, but if you are a backpacker, then there are options for hostels as well. goStops and Zostel are one of the good chains of hostels and offer great value for money.

DAY TRIPS FROM FORT KOCHI

While Fort Kochi has a lot to do and explore, many day trips from Fort Kochi are worth exploring. My favourite 3 places to visit for day trips from Fort Kochi are:

Cherai and Chendamangalam

Cherai is nestled at the northern end of Vypin Island and is blessed with calm and shallow waters, making it a favourite spot for swimming and bathing. It has a unique ecosystem, having backwaters from the Arabian Sea on one side and the Periyar River water on the other.

Apart from the beach, there are many water sports and adventure activities to choose from. There are many cultural and heritage sites in Cherai, which make it an interesting place to visit.

Among the places to visit near Cherai Beach, Chendamangalam Handlooms is also a cluster worth exploring. The Chendamangalam Heritage focuses on rural development and the sustainability of the handloom industry. A guided tour here takes the visitors through the history, the process, and the ecological and economic impact of Handlooms.

Alleppey

One of the most popular activities in Kerala is the houseboat experience in the backwaters of Kerala. Houseboats are available in Alleppey, Kumarakom and Kovalam. But the one on Alleppey has a different charm altogether.

Alleppey is around 50 km from Fort Kochi and takes you roughly 2 hours to get there by road. It is the ideal place to experience the houseboats of the backwaters.

Locally known as a Kettuvallam, the houseboat is primarily made of a wooden hull and a thatched roof of coir. You can hire a houseboat for a day trip or spend a few days relaxing and sailing around the beautiful backwaters of Alleppey.

All houseboats are well-staffed, including cooks who will prepare authentic Keralan cuisine. A standard menu includes fresh fish cooked in spices, steamed rice, curries with locally grown organic vegetables and fried banana fritters.

Fort Kochi is special, and I regret not coming here on all my previous visits to Kerala. I also wish I had more time to explore other Fort Kochi walking tours and try the umpteen cafes here. I thoroughly had a lovely time overlooking the Fort Kochi streets lined with blue and yellow buildings, terracotta roofs and cobbled pavements reflecting the colonial era, and the modern art vibes. All these make Fort Kochi one of the most popular holiday destinations in India.

Bandhavgarh National Park is a sought-after Tiger Reserve in the state of Madhya Pradesh in India. One of the most popular parks in the country, it has attracted naturalists, photographers, and international wildlife documentary filmmakers.

While tiger safari in Bandhavgarh is famous due to the highest density of Royal Bengal Tigers, it is equally a haven for other wildlife such as Indian bison, Sloth bears, Leopards, many types of deer and bird diversity.

Having been to other tiger reserves in Madhya Pradesh, such as – Kanha, Pench and Satpura – I was super excited for Bandhavgarh as it was my first time there.

WHY CHOOSE BANDHAVGARH?

Once the hunting grounds of the Maharaja of Rewa, it is now a significant sanctuary for wildlife. Bandhavgarh National Park is nestled in the Vindhya Hills of Madhya Pradesh, covering an area of over 1100 sq km. The park is divided in 3 core zones – Tala, Magadhi and Khitauli and 3 buffer zones – Dhamokhar, Johila and Panpatha. Each zone has a distinct landscape, offering a unique setting for wildlife.

KING’s LODGE BANDHAVGARH REVIEW

A long drive awaited after reaching Jabalpur airport. I was already dreading the city traffic, but almost immediately out of the airport, our driver, Izhar suggested if he could use a short-cut through a village to avoid the city roads. We were more than happy as he went to inform us that we would save 30 minutes of driving time!

The 3.5-hour drive was mostly smooth and made beautiful thanks to the blooming Palash flowers (Flame of the Forest). On crossing Umaria town, the Sal forests were visible on both sides – that meant we were close!

Glued to our window panes for any movement, we came across a herd of spotted deer. Aah, the feeling of being in the wilderness! The double-laned national highway then narrowed down to one lane, and the speed limit went down. We were even close!

We crossed the entry gates of all the core zones and later, a right turn brought us to the property. We were heartily welcomed by the staff at the lodge.

We were seated in the library with a projection room that doubles as a hi-tea room. Welcome drinks, along with a cold face towel, immediately made us feel at home. The lodge manager, Mr Yash requested a briefing session to explain about the property and even brought us gifts – refillable steel water bottles.

Here is all the information he shared and I came to know in the 3 days that I stayed.

Rooms at King’s Lodge Bandhavagarh

King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh features 18 spacious and well-appointed cottages that are designed keeping in mind the needs and comforts of the modern traveller. The cottages are in between a bamboo forest ensuring privacy and views to each unit. Cottages are lined with cow dung and hay – an ancient Indian practice for regulating interior temperatures. Since the temperatures can be extreme in Bandhavgarh, these practices ensure a comfortable temperature within the room.

Each unit of the beautifully designed cottage has a king-size bed, a contemporary ensuite bathroom and private viewing decks.

All rooms also have a tea and coffee maker with home-made cookies, areas to stow the luggage and a safety locker. Minimal yet rustic decor, beds with cozy mattresses, and ambient lighting add to the comfort and make you feel right at home. Lounge in the verandah of your cottage while getting engulfed in the sweet voices of countless birds.

Sustainability, Indian biodiversity and wildlife is reflected in every corner of the room and common spaces. The common areas have furniture using the local Sal trees and the door and handles have a wildlife element to them. The property wants the guests to enjoy the wilderness so much so that there is no TV and phone network in the rooms. However, there is wi-fi across the property that ensures you can share awesome wildlife pictures with your family and friends.

There is no in-room service and all meals are served in dedicated areas around the reception.

Being a sustainable property, drinking water is served in refillable steel bottles. The water is safe to consume as it is filtered RO water! The water is refilled several times a day and you will never have to request for it.

Culinary Delights

The menu is curated keeping the domestic and international guests in mind. The menu uses local ingredients from local vendors. The raw materials and ingredients used are sourced from local farmers and markets. And the food served gives an authentic taste of cuisine that is popular in the villages of Madhya Pradesh as well as global dishes.

King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh takes pride in not using and serving frozen food or spices. The executive chef will share the menu and ask for your preferred meal, especially for dinner. The meals are divided in 2 categories – Indian and Global, with enough options for vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.

Breakfast and lunch are served in the dining room, while dinner is an explicit affair at an outdoor sitting area. Cocktails and dinner are served in an open farmland where the chefs cook many live dishes on barbeque, and it is a perfect setting to meet other guests staying in the hotel and discuss the wildlife sightings of the day! There are bonfires lit in the area, ensuring you are warm while you sip your cold beer.

On many occasions a tribal dance is arranged here which is part of evening entertainment and also gives a slice of local culture. On one of the days that we were there, we watched the Baiga Tribe performing their festival dance, watched a cricket final match and on one  there was a wildlife documentary screening.

On-the-go safari Breakfast

Safari breakfasts are special. Imagine roughing it out in the cold wind for hours, trying to sight the big cats and then stopping in one of the jungle pit-stop areas where you are served hot beverages, samosas wrapped in Sal leaves, sandwiches, vegetable cutlets, fresh fruits, juice, cakes and other delicious snacks. It cannot get better than this!

King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh organizes breakfast on the go so that you are never hungry on a safari. The vehicles stop at jungle centre points that are designated breakfast points. The vehicle driver and guide set up a picnic basket and one can have a hearty meal amid the forest.

Beware of sparrows and monkeys who may try to snatch the yummy breakfast from your hands.

Swimming Pool

Near the reception of the property, there’s a small swimming pool where you can cool off after the game drive. King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh has a pool overlooking their organic garden and surrounded by greenery. Cool off and enjoy your holiday with a splash at the swimming pool. 

Library

If you have leisure time at hand then head to the in-house library that is ambient and beautifully styled with a number of books on wildlife and general reading. The library turns into a video room in the evening, where several documentary screenings take place.

Spa

After a long day out in the park, there is nothing more relaxing than a massage. Especially a full-day safari! Your body will thank you for the array of massages that are offered here  including ayurvedic massage, reflexology, Indian head massage and other range of full-body treatments.

Spa needs to be booked in advance so that the lodge can arrange the masseuse. 

Nature trail and Cycling tours

King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh arranges nature trail in and around the property with an expert naturalist. Since the property borders the Tala zone, there are birds to give you company. The walks are usually aimed at finding smaller things in the park like insects, butterflies, tracks and signs, birds, plants and other things that one would miss in a jeep. However, if luck is on your side, you might catch a glimpse of curious eyes peering back at you, belonging to one of the many hidden residents of the wild.

As the sun dips below the horizon, watch the forest prepare for a peaceful night’s rest. And as the moon rises over the clearing, carry home a heart full of memories—ones that will linger in your dreams long after you leave.

I suggest guests have atleast one free evening (parks are closed on Wednesday afternoon) to take up these walking tours.

Village Walks

You can experience the raw beauty of the surrounding village that borders the forests and listen to the tales of locals – how they have been living with the wildlife for centuries.

Immerse yourself in the lives of the local community, where many are skilled artisans. Share a meal or gain valuable insights from the indigenous tribes, such as the Baiga, who have lived in harmony with the forests for generations.

Sundowner

Who said one has to rough it out during a safari vacation? King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh ensures that you have a good time in between and after the safaris. Looking for an intimate dinner with your partner? Consider it done – with bush dinner and sundowner at exotic locales around the property. 

Sundowner is arranged near a pond where drinks and snacks await, overlooking the setting sun. However, in March 2025 when I visited, the activity was temporarily closed due to Sloth Bear movement in the area.

Tribal Dance

The property invites the community members of the local tribe, the Baiga, who entertain the guests with their festive dances and singing. This one hour of dance session is refreshing as you sip a local mahua cocktail while the bonfire warms you. 

Guests can join the dance and enjoy themselves with the tribe. 

Nature Shop

Take a bit of King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh with you with the souvenirs from nature shop. There are t-shirts, jackets, hats and caps that can be purchased. Other things include paintings and jewellery made by the Baiga tribe.

I picked some beautiful jewellery and my husband picked up a hat.

SUSTAINABILITY AT KING’S LODGE BANDHVAGRAH

The Pugdundee Safaris group is conscious of the environment and has inculcated many sustainable values in all of its hotels. Inspite of being in the jungle and away from many resources, the lodge practices sustainability! Some of the initiatives include the type of construction, no plastic policy, local employment, and others. Let us look at them in detail.

• The property has used sustainable materials throughout and has also added cod dung to the exterior to give a very rustic look. The dung along with hay cools the interiors – a practice from the Indian culture.

By flight

Bandhavgarh can easily be reached by air from all major cities in India including Delhi and Mumbai. Jabalpur is the closest airport to Bandhavgarh and is about a 4-hour road drive and flights from 4 cities operate here everyday – Indore, Bhopal, Mumbai and Delhi.

Khajuraho airport is 5 hours away and also a convenient airport specially when combining this beautiful temple town in your travels with Bandhavgarh.

By train

Umaria is the closest railway station (1 hour) followed by Katni (2 hours) and Jabalpur (4 hours), to reach King’s Lodge Bandhavgarh.

Katni is another major railway junction with trains coming from all parts of the country, including Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Kolkotta.

During my stay at King’s Lodge, I enjoyed a perfect blend of wildlife, culture and relaxation. The hospitality and meticulous attention to detail stood out during my brief visit. Nestled amidst the lush forest, the lodge offered a much-required tranquil retreat where nature and comfort coexist. We woke up to the melody of birds, set out on exhilarating jungle safaris to spot majestic tigers, and unwound with breathtaking sunsets over the forest canopy. The staff, manager and naturalists of the lodge are lovely people and one can easily strike a conversation with them.. The warm hospitality guarantees my desire to return for another stay.

Walk on the Ram Jhula and Lakshman Jhula

Jhula can be translated as Bridge and Laksham Jhula is one of the most popular attractions in Rishikesh.

Ram Jhula and Lakshman Jhula are huge iron suspension bridges over the river Ganga. The names of bridges are based on Indian mythology and are named after Lord Ram and his brother Lakshman, who had crossed the river through this bridge. 

Both bridges are pedestrian bridges, but two-wheelers are allowed to pass through. It makes it a bit congested to walk, but nevertheless, do it. The view of flowing water from the bridge is mesmerising

Chill at the banks of the Ganga River in Rishikesh

This was my favourite activity to do as I stole moments from my work schedule during the morning and evening to simply walk over the rocks on the banks and sit by the calming waters of the Ganga.

There is something unique and soothing about the waters that truly calms the body and mind – maybe it is the cold water touching your feet, or maybe the rippling sound of water over the rocks or the sound of bells from a nearby temple aarti.

The whole thing just works, and you will find a lot of people meditating on the banks.

Learn Yoga in Rishikesh

Whenever someone says Yoga in India, the first place that comes to mind is Rishikesh.

Yoga and Rishikesh go hand in hand, quite literally. So, there is a high possibility of getting overwhelmed by seeing posters and banners on literally every street and corner advertising the best yoga course.

There is also a chance that the hotel you are staying at will have an early yoga/meditation class. But let’s face it, Rishikesh is not called a yoga capital for no reason!

There are 1-day classes, and then there are courses spanning weeks and months. Hatha Yoga is the most popular yoga type in Rishikesh. Other than that, Kundalini and Vinyasa yoga are also the preferred choices by visitors. Visitors can also enrol for Yoga Teacher Training in Rishikesh.

If you are in Rishikesh for a weekend or a short while and want to learn yoga, the best option is to take up the class which is generally offered by your hotel/hostel. If you wish to go to a professional class or to an ashram, the cost is Rs. 200-300 for 90 90-minute duration.

Enrol in various courses in Rishikesh

Other than yoga, there are many kinds of courses up for grabs, such as meditation, body massage, aromatherapy, breathing course, nutrition, Ayurveda, singing, music, Indian cooking, and many more! If you have the time and enthusiasm, I say go for it.

Bungee Jumping in Rishikesh

Rishikesh has India’s highest Bungee Jumping platform at a height of 83 metres, which is located just outside Rishikesh. This one is for all the adrenaline junkies who have waited for a long to have this thrill in India. The jump needs to be pre-booked, and visitors should keep aside a day for this, as the to-and-fro transfer would easily take up 5-6 hours.

Camping in Rishikesh

Camping in Rishikesh along the Ganga River is an extremely popular activity. Camping can be combined with white water rafting, and many camps are offering 1N2D packages with strict environmental measures.

Experience nature and wildlife in Rajaji National Park

If you are a wildlife enthusiast like me who tries to find every possible opportunity to spot wildlife parks on every work trip, then Rishikesh will not disappoint. If you fancy trying to spot some wildlife, including Tigers, whilst in Rishikesh, then get booked onto a Jungle Safari! 

Unlike other national parks, Rajaji National Park does not require booking, and the tickets can be purchased from the gate. Like all national parks, it is closed from 15th June to 15th October, and the safari is done in an open jeep vehicle. The duration of the safari is the standard of 3 hours.

Though claimed to spot tigers, there have been few instances of actually spotting one! However, Elephants, Spotted Deer, Sambhar, Wild Boar, Barking deer, Goral, Himalayan Black Bear and Sloth Bear are some of the wildlife that can be seen here!

White Water River Rafting in Rishikesh

Probably one of the top things to do in Rishikesh, white water rafting in Rishikesh is not to be missed! I did white water rafting in Goa, and it was an amazing experience. I wanted to try it in Rishikesh, probably combining it with camping.

There are many adventure enthusiasts who go to Rishikesh just for White water rafting specifically. Rafting rapids in Rishikesh are distributed under various grades (I, II, III, IV and IV+), which are the highest in India and the most adventurous.

Ganga Aarti in Rishikesh

Ganga aarti in Rishikesh happens at the Parmarth Niketan Ashram after the Ram Jhula Bridge.

It is unlike what happens in Haridwar with big diyas, which are nothing less than mesmerising. So I was a bit disappointed with the Rishikesh aarti, where there was some chanting and people left their diyas in the river.

There is a Lord Shankar statue which has a bridge, and visitors can go on top of this and watch the aarti from here.

Kunjapuri Temple Sunrise

I love trekking and I love sunrises! Combine the two at Kunjapuri temple to witness a stunning sunrise overlooking the Himalayan mountains and an even more incredible view of the glistening Ganga river.

Kunjapuri temple sunrise is one of the offbeat things to do in Rishikesh. It is approximately 25km away and an easy walk, so one has to wake up super early and start by 4:30 am to reach the sunrise point. There are group tours to the sunrise point with transportation, or you can even take a car if you are too lazy to trek. 

Drench in the Neergarh Waterfall

Neergarh waterfall in Rishikesh, also known as ‘Neer Gaddu’, is a lovely waterfall, situated about 7 km from Lakshman Jhula. The trek through the misty forests sets the scene and makes the adventure all the more worthwhile. Be careful, as there are monkeys on the trail.

The crystal blue colour of the pool is soothing, and the cold water is super refreshing after the one-hour trek! Yes, swimming or bathing is possible and allowed here, but since the pool is shallow, diving and jumping are not allowed. 

Birds and Butterflies will be seen on the trail, and wildflowers will be in bloom, adding beauty to this wonderful spot. There’s also a rich variety of flowers and trees for real nature lovers.

Water, soft drinks, noodles and tea are available at Neergarh Waterfall from a small tin shack across the bridge.

Shopping in Rishikesh

Whether it is a souvenir, woollen clothes and shawls or ayurvedic products, Rishikesh shopping is fun. Must buy from Rishikesh includes essential oils, natural beauty products, candles and mountain fruit squash – Ramphal juice, Rhododendron juice, Leh berry juice and others! I shopped for some Rajma (kidney beans) as they grow in these mountainous areas and are so yummy and cheaper than in the cities!

Best Places to Eat in Rishikesh | Best Cafes in Rishikesh

Rishikesh is abundant in cafes and restaurants offering good, healthy food. Be aware that since it is a holy place, you will not find non-vegetarian food or alcohol here. However, there are plenty of Vegetarian and Vegan options at a great price! The following places were highly recommended.

Little Buddha Cafe

So many people recommended I visit this when I asked on my Instagram stories, so I just had to check this out. I went for dinner and it was jam-packed. And 2 of my colleagues got a table here after 45 minutes of waiting. I bet the view from here must be great, as I could hear the Ganga waters rippling in the distance. 

I tried the watermelon juice and thukpa on a friend’s suggestion and both were good!

Ganga View Cafe 

As the name suggests, it has a fantastic view of the Ganga from its balcony. A few meters from Lakshman Jhula, it is known for its multi-cuisine food.

Other great cafes are Shambala for live music, The Beatles Cafe – I rest my case, The Bakeries and TAT cafe.

Where to Stay in Rishikesh

It is best to choose a place in the north of Rishikesh that is near the Lakshman Jhula as everything is within walking distance. There are many options to choose from – hotels, hostels and even ashrams.

Hotels in Rishikesh

Hotels are abundant in Rishikesh. Kunwar Residency is a good-budget hotel. Hotel Ishan provides spectacular river views.

Guest House in Rishikesh

I stayed with the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) as I was on a work trip. It is also called the Ganga Resort. The view from my balcony was breathtaking, and I simply crossed the guesthouse wall to soak my feet in the icy cold Ganga water. It is as good as a hotel and very cosy, and clean, with homely food. The price is on the higher side as it is a government guest house.

There are many guest houses which do not book online. They may reserve a room on the phone in the offseason, but it is best to just go and book in person with luggage. Generally, the rooms are basic but available. 

Hostels in Rishikesh

There are a lot of good hostels in Rishikesh. Shiv Shakti Hostel, Live Free Hostel, and hostel chains such as Hosteller and Zostel Rishikesh are also good options.

Ashrams in Rishikesh

Rishikesh has a lot of Ashrams wherein one can stay for a longer duration, especially if you have enrolled for yoga courses. Ashrams in Rishikesh offer a one-week package which includes daily yoga, activities and meals. It is best if you are looking to detoxify as the good meals, silence, meditation and yoga, will be soulful for the mind and body.

Sivananda Ashram, The Omkarananda Ashram, Parmarth Niketan Ashram are some of the recommended ones.

Nashik tourist attractions for devotees/pilgrimage

Trimbakeshwar Temple

A well-known pilgrimage town of Trimbak is the host to an ancient Hindu temple – Trimbakeshwar. It is one of the holy 12 Jyotirlinga temples of Lord Shiva. It is one of the most popular temples in Maharashtra as well as India.

Please keep in mind that you will require over half a day just to visit this temple as you will be standing in queue for 3-4 hours to reach the main temple and pay your respects. An express queue (paid) will take you in less than half the time.

Thankfully, photography is now allowed in Trimbakeshwar temple. Yes, mobile phones are allowed inside. You can click the architecture but clicking photos of the idol is still not allowed.

Kalaram temple

Kalaram temple situated in the city is popular amongst the locals and tourists alike and that is why it features in the top Nashik tourist places to visit. The significance of the temple is that it was built at the place where Lord Rama had stayed once. The root source of these idols can be traced back to the 15th century.

There are three idols in the temple that are known to be the creation of nature. The idols are made of black sand and hence the temple is known as ‘Kalaram (black ram) temple’. If you are an architecture lover, this is a must-visit place.

Panchavati ghat/ Ram Kund /Triveni Sangam in Nashik

Triveni Sangam in Nashik also known as Panchavati ghat or Ram Kund is the venue where Kumbh Mela takes place. Triveni translates to “confluence of the three holy rivers”. The three rivers that confluence at Panchavati Ghat are Godavari, Aruna and Varuna. 

During the day, there is not much to do at this place other than dipping your feet in the water and watching people pay respects to the river.

However, the place completely transforms into a holy spectacle after sunset. Just like the Ganga aarti at Haridwar, Rishikesh and Varanasi, Godavari aarti started few years back that enthralls the devotees. The Godavari aarti that used to take place every Monday is now an everyday affair ensuring that all visitors get spiritually enriched.

The Godavari aarti starts at 7pm and takes an hour. The pandit announcing on mic ensures that all devotees take part in the aarti while also watching the 5 pandits doing maha-aarti. It is a must visit for everyone.

Godavari aarti at Panchavati Ghat Nashik

Shree Kapaleshwar Mahadev Mandir

Built in 14th century, Shree Kapileshwar Mahadev Temple is one of the oldest temples in Nashik. This Shiva temple is located just backdrop of the sacred river Godavari and 2 minutes walk from Ramkund. The importance of this temple is that this is only temple that does not have a Nandi. Nandi is a sacred bull that is often depicted in Shiva temples around the entrance and is also known as his vahana (vehicle).

The temple can be reached by climbing 50 steps and has a lovely aura around it.

I noticed there are some houses and offices still there and people co-habiting in the temple premises.

Nashik tourist attarctions for hiking/ Nature lovers

Pandavleni (Pandav caves)

Pandavleni is known to be the oldest range of caves in the state of Maharashtra. Also known as the Nashik Caves, or sometimes Pandavleni Caves are built on Trirashmi hills which are 8km from the city of Nashik and an easy drive to the foothills.

After climbing almost 250 steps (some of which are a bit steep) you come across a group of 24 caves. Most caves have sculptures or carvings outside the cave and are blank or have very indistinct inscriptions on the inside. All the caves are marked with numbers from outside. The trek to the caves reminded me of Bhaja caves while climbing Lohagad Fort and Achalgarh in Mount Abu.

Even though the name is Pandav, the caves bear no resemblance to the Pandavas but were a place of worship for Buddhist monks or for disciples to meet and hear sermons. 

Pros: a small hike to an utterly beautiful place. The view of Nashik city from the top is lovely which makes it one of the best places to visit in Nashik.

Cons: though shoes are recommended to hike this hillock, most caves demand you to remove footwear. So wear something quick is comfortable yet quick to remove and wear.

Anjaneri Hills and Fort

There are many treks near Nashik to choose from out of which, Anjaneri is a popular trekking place for the locals, especially during monsoons.

Anjaneri is only 25km from Nashik city. Anjaneri has one of the famous forts in the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar mountain range. The views during the trek and from the top are breathtaking and hence this is an absolute must-do attraction in Nashik. However, it needs a full day. 

In order to reach the Anjaneri fort, hire a car/bike and get down at Anjaneri village. There are some steps next to the village entrance, through which one can reach the plateau of Anjaneri. From Anjaneri village, it is an hour and a half hike to reach the plateau of Anjaneri. 

The trekkers can also pay their respects in a temple. There is a cave about 10 min away from here with beautiful carvings. The fort has a huge perimeter and commands splendid views of the Trimbakeshwar Peak, Vaitarna back waters and Brahmagiri. This fort and the trek reminded me of climbing Kumbhalgarh Fort.

Someshwar Waterfalls

A small detour before going to Sula Vineyards can get you to the Someshwar waterfalls.

About 10 km from the city, the falls are in full splendour in monsoon but not so much in other seasons. When I visited it was a meagre stream with a lot of waste thrown in and some local boys trying to catch some fish.

Dugarwadi Waterfalls

On the way to Trimbakeshwar, about 40km from Nashik lies the beautiful and weirdly shaped mountains. These are home to many of the waterfalls. Dugarwadi waterfall is one of them as it is on the way and only a short hike will give you an outstanding view.

As usual, its beauty can best be enjoyed during monsoons. This is one of the favourite Nashik Tourist places.

Drive to Sapgon on NH-848, which is around 4 km from Trimbakeshwar. From Sapgon the waterfall is 4 km. It will take close to 45 minutes to reach the viewpoint as there are slopes to climb and it can get slippery. A word of caution: follow the signs! If you want to trek to the bottom of the waterfall, it will take more time.

Nashik tourist places for Wine Lovers

Sula Vineyards

Sula Vineyards is one of the most popular tourist places in Nashik. While people from across the world throng Sula during the Sula Fest, it is open across the year for tourists to see the vineyards, watch the making of mine, taste the wine or just dine overlooking the vineyards. If you even think that Sula Vineyard is worth visiting then let me tell you that the entry is practically free (Rs. 600 per person but redeemable against any paid activity or purchase in their shop).

Since I went in the month of February, the grape season was in full ripe mode with harvesting just about to start. I had a good half-day at Sula where I did the wine tour and tasting. It is a 45-minute tour where they take the tourists around the production and show how the wine is manufactured. After the tour, you get to taste 6 of their wines – 4 whites and 2 reds served with a cracker.

There is a wine shop and a souvenir shop where you can purchase wines and T-shirts.

Time: 11:30 am to 10:30pm

Entry fee: Rs. 600 per person on weekdays and Rs 1000 on weekends

Wine tour and tasting: Rs. 400 per person

Nashik tourist attractions for Offbeat things / Adventure

Nashik Flower park

Loved by the locals this is one of the beautiful places to visit in Nashik.

Nashik flower garden is made utilizing spaces of a local water park – Shubham waterpark which becomes idle during winters due to the cold water. Hence the flower park is open only in winter – January to April. Currently, the flower park hosts about 1 million flowers on water slides of the water park

Time: 11 am to 7 pm

Entry fee: Rs.300 on weekdays, Rs. 400 on weekends

Boating and Adventure water sports

MTDC Boat Club Nashik on Gangapur dam offers many water adventure sports. Do not go on the name of exclusive ‘club’. It is open to all. There is a basic entry fee of Rs 50 per person and each activity cost is extra as per your choice.

Water sports such as boating, kayaking, boat cruise, banana ride, jet ski among others are available.

Nashik tourist attractions for Museum lovers

Gargoti Mineral Museum

Known as the epicentre of Indian Zeolite Minerals, Gargoti museum is one of the top Nasik tourist places.

Gargoti Museum is India’s only gem & mineral museum and is the world’s biggest “Private” gem & mineral museum. Gargoti Museum houses the largest & the finest collection of Indian Zeolite Minerals & Crystals in the world.

The museum is divided into Deccan Plateau Gallery and Prestige galley. The former contains Zeolite Minerals & Crystals excavated from the Deccan region of India while the latter section displays the exclusive and rarest finds from India and around the world.

Coin Museum

Coin Museum of Nasik, one of its kind in India, gives tourists a glimpse of Indian currency evolution over years. I tried to collect coins in my growing years but I lost interest. Now that I have coins from various countries I have started growing my interest again and so this museum was really a good visit. In the museum, one can see exhibits like moulds, dyes, replicas, and photographs of coins from ancient time.

Known for its virgin beaches and beautiful homestays, Konkan is a paradise. Every Konkan beach offers something unique – either a forest, a fort or a hill around it. This unique ecosystem not only provides stunning views but also offbeat experiences.

The Konkan Coast is a 720 km long coastline in Western India that covers the coasts of Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. With villages and towns scattered across the entire coastline, every beach is a paradise of its own. Having visited Alibaug and Divegar, I was unsure what to expect from Sindhudurg.

Yes, Sindhudurg is offbeat, but not for the people of Maharashtra. It has been popular for its sea fortress known as Sindhudurg Fort. The tourists visiting this place are mostly locals who have grown up hearing tales of the valour of the legendary knight-king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Before visiting Sindhudurg, I was not aware of the many things to do in Sindhudurg, or that it had a tiny airport! But thanks to Coco Shambhala Sindhudurg, I was able to participate in many of the experiential tourism opportunities the resort has designed.

According to me, this is the perfect alternative to Goa, especially for those who prefer nature, peaceful walks, pristine waterfalls and tranquil beaches.

ABOUT COCO SHAMBHALA

Leisurely away from the touristy Goa, at a stone’s throw away from Bhogawe beach is Coco Shambhala. Its presence on the road is invisible – there is a door that opens to a few steps that lead to the four luxury villas that are a nod to a well-thought-out architecture and design as well as top-notch interior design.

This luxury resort is located 15 kilometres from the recently opened Sindhudurg Airport – and a drive through lush green landscape brings guests here. As Sindhudurg airport has limited flight landing, guests can into Mopa (North Goa) Airport and drive from there which is a 90-120 minute drive. 

COCO SHAMBHALA SINDHUDURG REVIEW

At the property, we were greeted with a refreshing lemon and curry-leaf drink. F&B Manager, Mr Suhas, who had already shared our day’s itinerary and food menu, welcomed us and briefed us about the next couple of hours. 

But, first things first. The best feature of the property is the villas and let’s go on a tour around it.

Rooms at Coco Shambhala Sindhudurg

There are only four luxury villas a Coco Shambhala Sindhudurg. I stayed at Villa Arka which has a living, dining and kitchenette space and is flanked by two bedrooms on either side.

The living area is open and has a private infinity pool while also offering stunning views of the Arabian Sea. There is no main door to the villa, and if you don’t want to be disturbed, there is a rope that you can fix at the entrance to indicate the same. A small bell also hangs outside which the staff always ring when they come to the living space. All the verdant, lush greenery around the villa firmly establishes privacy.

The rooms are well appointed with a comfortable bed, television, a large balcony, and a spacious bathroom. The rooms are spacious and designed with the needs and comforts of the modern traveller in mind. Each beautifully designed room unit has a king-size bed, a contemporary ensuite bathroom and large wardrobes. The block print furnishings in pastel hues merge with the tropical vibe, giving the room an easy, breezy feeling.

The kitchenette has a tea and coffee maker with homemade cookies. There’s a pantry with fresh milk, juice and cold beverages that are stored in the refrigerator. There are glasses to enjoy every type of alcohol as well as an ice box.

The food is brought from the central kitchen into the villa kitchenette and served at the dining table in the living area. After the meal is over, the staff clean the plates in the villa kitchen and place the dedicated racks.

Coco ensures that long-duration guests do not miss out on their work which is why each villa has high-speed wi-fi. Guests can work while enjoying the infinity pool as well as the ocean.

Being a sustainable property, drinking water is served in refillable glass bottles. The water is safe to consume as it is filtered RO water!

Konkani food for the win!

Coco Shambhala personalises menus for each guest, tailoring meals to individual tastes and using the freshest ingredients possible. The menu is shared before the guest arrives at the property and is customized to accommodate any requests.

We reached around lunch and Coco Shambhala arranged a Konkani cooking class. A cooking class was set up right in the villa. Chef Dilip Bavkar took us through the steps of preparing Tambdi Bhaji (red spinach) and Prawns in red curry. My otherwise kitchen-shy husband enjoyed cooking the meal. 

Soon enough it was time to have lunch. We were served a mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes catering both – me and husband’s preferences. 

Prawns in red curry, red spinach with grated coconut; black-eyed bean curry, and varan (lentils cooked in coconut and turmeric) served with Ragi bhakri (flatbread). On the side, we had Kothimbir vadi (coriander with gram flour) and Koshimbir (salads) and Papad/Pickles. The meal concluded with Firni, a delightful rice and milk pudding. 

Both of us being Maharashtrians found the taste on point and enjoyed the being close to home flavours.

The rest of the meals also had delightful flavours combining coconut, kokum and other Konkan-specific species. We thoroughly enjoyed all of our meals here.

Infinity Pool Villa

Each of the four villas in Coco Shambhala features a huge infinite pool overlooking the Arabian Sea and surrounded by greenery. It is the central feature of the villa and everything revolves around it. You can request drinks by the pool, play some songs and have a little party of your own!

Spa

Drawing from India’s ancient wellness traditions, the spa at Coco Shambhala offers personalized Ayurvedic treatments, including Abhyanga (full-body oil massage) and Shirodhara (a stream of warm oil poured on the forehead). 

There are also aromatherapy massages, body scrubs and beauty treatments to best utilize the vacation.

All treatments are carried out by trained professionals who ensure that every treatment is executed with precision and care.

EXPERIENTIAL TOURS AT COCO SHAMBHALA SINDHUDURG

Nivati Fort trek

While Sindhudurg is the highlight of the region, there is another fort in the vicinity that is forgotten. If visiting this in monsoon, Sindhudurg becomes inaccessible as boat rides are shut. Nivati Fort is a better option and is only visited by the locals.

Nivati Fort is believed to have been built during the reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and was strategically located to guard the coastline and protect the surrounding villages from invaders. While much of it lies in ruins, visitors can still explore remnants of the ancient walls, bastions, and gateways. 

The trek usually begins at Nivati village, a quaint settlement that exudes the charm of rural Konkan. The trail winds through lush greenery, coconut groves, and rocky paths, gradually leading up to the fort. The climb is gentle, with occasional steep sections, and can typically be completed within 1 to 1.5 hours.

The views from the top of the fort offer spectacular views of the Arabian Sea, with Nivati Beach on one side and Bhogwe Beach on the other. It is so beautiful that you wouldn’t want to leave the spot.

After the trek, it is best to climb down from this hillock onto the Bhogwe beach and walk back to the resort.  

Waterfall exploration

Being Konkan, the area is full of waterfalls – some big some small, some popular, some hidden. Thankfully the local guides in Coco know them all and depending upon the visitor’s adventure level for difficulty, you can pick a waterfall to visit.

Unfortunately, during my visit, the waterfall had a very high water force due to a recent spell of rain and it was not safe to visit, so we gave it a miss.

Boat ride on Karli River

Gliding along the tranquil backwaters of the Karli River is a serene way to uncover the hidden treasures of Sindhudurg and its surroundings. Visitors hop on a slow manual rowing boat and just tune in to the sounds of nature. The swift swaying of coconut trees in the wind, the cacophony of the kingfisher, the white-bellied eagles swirling in circles and the distant ringing of a temple bell.

The boat stopped near a coconut tree wherein our boatman disembarked, harvested 2 coconuts right out of a coconut tree, and presented to us for sipping fresh coconut water right on the boat. 

Walaval Lakshminarayan Temple

A 900-year-old temple dedicated to Lakshminarayan is tucked away in the small village of Walaval. With a wonderful sculpture, it is said that this temple has been renovated 3 times so far. The lake next to the temple and the beautiful natural environment there are captivating. In front of this temple, we can see 5 lamp pillars with beautiful stone construction.

This temple is designed in 3 stages – First is the main sanctum, then the main hall and then comes a grand assembly hall with seats on both sides. It is said that during the war, the idol was brought here from the village of Harmal, fearing the Portuguese. Here, you can see a palanquin that walks every Monday from Kartik Ekadashi to Mriga Nakshatra. On Kojagiri Pournima, oil lamps are lit on the Deepmala.

Chitrakathi Painting Workshop

Chitrakathi involves storytelling through art on a 12×15” or 12×18” canvas, which can take 1-3 days to complete, depending on the painting’s intricacy. Traditionally, these paintings depicted scenes from mythological epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata. But in modern paintings, birds, and mythological creatures are depicted. An artist – Mr Chetan Gangawane, can help you learn this traditional art form in less than an hour. It’s a great way to destress, learn the art and be creative.

Shadow puppet show

Shadow puppetry is an ancient form of storytelling and entertainment which uses flat articulated cut-out figures (shadow puppets) which are held between a source of light and a translucent screen or scrim. The cut-out shapes of the puppets sometimes include translucent colours or other types of detailing. Various effects can be achieved by moving both the puppets and the light source. A skilled puppeteer can make the figures appear to walk, dance, fight, nod and laugh. The show is conducted by master puppeteer – Mr Chetan Gangawane. 

SUSTAINABILITY AT COCO SHAMBHALA

Coco Shambhala is conscious of the environment and has inculcated many sustainable values. From the design to the filtration of the infinity pool, from sourcing fresh produce from locals to growing their microgreens, there are many other initiatives.

Some of the initiatives include the type of construction, no plastic policy, local employment, and others. Let us look at them in detail.

• Coco Shambhala Sindhudurg, nestled in Parole village, offers a captivating immersion into local rural life. Visiting the surrounding villages with tribal communities offers an enriching village excursion with fascinating encounters. 
• The architecture is done using local labour, recycled material and hand-made coconut wood to create this low-impact retreat. 
• The villas are designed as technically temporary structures, with the entire frame assembled using nuts and bolts instead of structural welding. Additionally, no roads were built to access the site, and no heavy machinery such as JCBs or cranes was used. The entire project was constructed manually to minimize environmental impact, ensuring the flexibility to dismantle the houses at any time without leaving a lasting footprint on the land.
• The property has solar panels that ensure uninterrupted green energy to the villas.
• The water bottles used are refillable glass bottles with filtered RO water.
•  Instead of hand tissues, the lodge uses washable and reusable cotton napkins in the common bathroom.

HOW TO REACH SINDHUDURG

By flight

Coco Shambhala can be reached via road from the airport or train station. The nearest airport is Mopa Airport, Goa as well as Sindhudurg Airport. The Mopa International Airport in Goa is the nearest airport (85 km) connecting to Sindhudurg. This airport has better connectivity with other cities as compared to Sindhudurg Airport.

By train

Sindhudurg has its railway station and is well connected by train. Kanakvalli, Kudal, and Sawanwadi are major railway stations in Sindhudurg district. These railway stations are about 25- 35 km away from the destination. The railway station in Sindhudurg is well-connected to major cities like Goa, Pune, Mumbai, Mangalore and Ahmedabad.

By road

The National Highway-17 passes through Sindhudurg. The buses are available from Mumbai or other cities in Maharashtra. You may also board a bus or rent a car from Goa or Mangalore.

The Maharashtra state government ( MSRTC) buses running from Pune, Mumbai, Sangli, Kolhapur, Ratnagiri, and Goa state government buses (Kadamba Transport Corporation) that run from Madgaon, Panaji, Vasco and Pernem to Sindhudurg are easy transports available that connect to Sindhudurg Fort.

FINAL THOUGHTS ABOUT COCO SHAMBHALA SINDHUDURG REVIEW

I had a relaxing time at Coco Shambhala and especially loved the hospitality and attention to detail. The property is extremely beautiful, and cosy, and has delicious food. The staff is friendly and one can easily pick up a conversation with them. The warm hospitality guarantees my desire to return for another stay.

A popular weekend destination from Mumbai and Pune, Sula offers a lot of things to do, see or relax. I always wondered if ‘Is Sula Vineyards worth the visit’ and I thought to give it a try.

The popularity of Sula fest over the years has made everyone think about visiting Sula at least once! 

A popular destination from Nashik, it is visited by wine connoisseurs as well as tourists who want to look at a grape farm (vineyard) or grab a bite at their restaurant.

In this post, I talk about the winemaking and its history but most importantly, I share my review of the Sula Vineyards tours and tasting and try to answer the question – Is Sula Vineyards worth the visit? 

ALL ABOUT SULA VINEYARDS

Sula Vineyards is the top wine producer in India and has the most accessible winery. From humble beginnings in 1997, Sula Vineyards has admirably developed into a world-class winery with boutique guest accommodations. The winery is open to visitors, who can enjoy a tour, tastings, courses, and fun events. With 2 major wineries in the countries, Nashik is the smaller one but still unique enough of an operation to not feel too commercial but large enough to provide visitors with an awesome tour and tasting.

Best time to visit Sula Vineyards

Sula is open all year, Monday to Sunday, and there are several activities every day. The grape season is from January to March and hence it is the best time to see them grow in the vineyard and observe it’s process. That is also the reason why Sula fest is conducted in February every year. Sula Fest take place on the first weekend of every February.

Reaching Sula Vineyards from Nashik

The winery is located on the outskirts of Nashik, and takes about 30 minutes to reach. It is conveniently located 4 hours each from Mumbai and Pune and thus is a happening weekend destination and makes Sula Vineyards worth the visit.

The tasting, of course, is the most exciting part of the tour. Wine etiquette like temperature, smell, swirl and combination food are discussed in the Tasting Room. These were the 6 wines up for tasting, served with biscuits.

Sula Brut Chardonnay

The Chardonnay is a sparkling wine that is light and fresh having biscuit dough aromas whilst the palate features crisp chardonnay flavours and light crack yeast lees characteristics. 

Sula Sauvignon Blanc

This wine made the world sit up and take notice of Indian wines. Herbaceous, crisp, WHITE and dry, with aromas of bell peppers, intermingled with tropical fruits like passion fruit and gooseberry with a racy, zingy finish. 

Sula Dindori Reserve Chardonnay

An exotic elixir of peach and lychee flavours is a white wine. Floral, spicy, stunning. Great as an aperitif and terrific with spicy food, blue/goat cheese as well as seafood. 

Sula Rasa Syrah

Went a little BOLD with this one, not my style but my Malay sweetheart enjoyed this one so I am sure, this will be a treat for Red wine lovers.

Sula Rasa Cabernet Sauvignon

A red wine, worthy of a collector’s edition! It is aged in French oak barrels for over a year which makes it into a velvety smooth wine with a powerful finesse with a hint of fruit and spice. 

Sula Chenin Blanc

Chenin Blanc is India’s best selling white wine and is cold-fermented and finished in a semi-dry style. It is a light, fresh, fruity character, which makes it an excellent aperitif.

SUSTAINABILITY AT SULA VINEYARDS

I was really intrigued to know about the sustainability practised by Sula as I saw many boards claiming it. So I went ahead and asked the tour guide and this is what he told me and boy was I impressed!

Solar power

More than 75% of power used in Sula Vineyards comes from solar energy. Almost all the rooftops at the hotel, offices and restaurant are covered with solar panels in the vineyards.

Water recycling

Sula has really made sustainability seriously. With water efficient bathroom fittings in rooms, there are signs encouraging visitors and hotel guests to turn off taps. An effluent treatment plant (ETP) on site ensures all the water used in premises is treated and reused. This treated and disinfected water is used in housekeeping and also in the vineyards. 

Drip irrigation

In order to cut down on traditional irrigation practices which use a lot of water, drip irrigation system is installed in vineyards which cuts water consumption by almost half.

No plastic zone

There are no PET bottles for sale or in use at Sula hotel or restaurants. PET bottles are replaced by reusable glass bottles for mineral water. Dedicated efforts are undertaken to eradicate plastic from all food and beverage offerings, including cutlery and packaging.

No waste zone

Sula has its own biogas unit which is fueled by food waste generated by the restaurants. Hence there is no sent to landfills.

Best from waste

Sula went a step forward to use the last bit of waste from grapes – the grapeseed. They used to compost it but due to its stony nature, they did not decompose soon. Hence Sula introduced grapeseed oil made from it – using all bits of waste and putting it in good use.

Supporting the local community

As a part of CRS mandate, Sula employees the local community from the surrounding village.

Visit the pristine beaches

Visitors do not think of beaches when it comes to Kerala. However, Kerala boasts of a stunning coastline with pristine beaches. Go canoeing in Vembanad Lake

Wondering about edible souvenirs to take back home? While there are many options, banana wafers fried in coconut oil are at the top of the list. Found in every department store and Snack store, banana wafers have a long shelf life and are a must to carry back home.

Photograph the Chinese Fishing Nets

Chinese Fishing Nets are part of the heritage in Kerala and although the new technology has overtaken this manual work, the charm is much greater. Locally known as ‘Chhenavala’, these nets were introduced in the 14th century by a Chinese explorer and they stayed ever since.

Sample the Kozhikode Halwa

The Kozhikode Halwa is one of the most famous delicacies of Kerala. Learn Shipbuilding

Beypore is known as a shipbuilders’ paradise, and it dates back fifteen hundred years or more. The wooden ships are known as Uru, and they were made as trade ships to carry cargo from India to the Middle East and vice versa.

The traditional ship-making families have passed on the knowledge through generations s and currently, over 500 families are dependent on this profession.

Attend Theyyam Festival

Theyyam is a popular ritual form of dance worship in Kerala and Karnataka. It is not done for entertainment and is a very private ritual performed near village temples.

Majorly conducted in North Kerala, theyyam is now performed all across the state and the purpose of this dance worship is to unite humanity with divinity.

Spot the Mountain goats

Mountain goats known as Nilgiri Tahr are endemic to the Munnar region of Western ghats. They are protected in the Eravikulam National Park.

Tourists can go to the national park to spot the Nilgiri Tahr (it is not difficult).

WHEN TO VISIT KERALA

Kerala can be best enjoyed in winter that is between November to February because of perfect weather conditions and less humidity. Summers are good too but the humidity is unbearable combined with heat. Monsoons are not a good time as rain is pretty harsh in the state.

GETTING AROUND KERALA

Depending on how you get into Kerala, you’re likely to find yourself in one of three cities on arrival – Kochi, Kozhikode or Thiruvanthapuram (Trivandrum). 

The entire state is connected via train and has a good frequency. However one can visit the hotpots by land travel. Buses and private cars are the best way to get around Kerala.

• Kerala is one of the cleanest states in India, in spite of the tourist influx so let’s try to maintain the same and be disciplined.
• If you come across a wild animal crossing the road/highway, give them time and space. Do not encroach on it by trying to get a selfie.
• Do not write on the palace walls or rocks at the beach. Let’s maintain the pristine heritage.
• Avoid wearing perfumes while going to the seaside or national parks.
• Blend in the culture by wearing the right clothes and eating the local food.
