Love Birdwatching? Wondering where are the closest birdwatching destinations around Ahmedabad? I have 5 amazing options which I always go to and they ever disappoint!

Gujarat has some of India’s most accessible wetlands which are avian territories and hotspots for birdwatching. Whether you’re a pro bird watching enthusiast, or simply  want to spend sometime amongst the chirping of birds or are a student wanting to know more about them, Gujarat is full of places to experience bird life.

There are atleast 5 such birdwatching destinations around Ahmedabad which provide lush terrestrial natural environment for birds to live. Birdwatching is one of most exciting things on the ‘to do list’ of all tourists and wildlife enthusiasts visiting Ahmedabad.

Come October and the wetlands around Ahmedabad are flocked by the unique species of birds. The diversity includes terrestrial birds, water birds and birds of prey, some resident and some migratory traveling all the way from Europe, Africa or Central Asia. So, time to fire away the camera shutter and grab a pair of binoculars to get going! Let’s have a look at these birdwatching destinations around Ahmedabad.

All of these wetlands come under protected areas and hence require you to buy a ticket for entry.

BIRDWATCHING DESTINATIONS AROUND AHMEDABAD

Thol Lake

Thol lake Bird Sanctuary is a shallow freshwater lake surrounded by marshes on the sides. The lake covers about 7 sq. km. area and is completely dependent upon rainwater. It was declared as a Ramsar Site. A walking trail takes you around the edges of the lake, wherein there are viewing points and pictures of probable birds you may see.

The lake is spectacle in itself at the sunrise as you are greeted by the sounds of cranes, flamingos doing yoga, cormorants basking in the sun’s glory and raptors hovering with empty stomachs.

The forest area around the lake will leave you mesmerized and remind you of a fairy tale. Look out for Sarus Crane (world’s tallest flying bird) on the outskirts of Thol in the nearby fields. You will also spot a lot of terrestrial birds on the opposite of walking trail in the tall trees. Most commonly seen are Brahminy starlings, green bee eater, black rumped flameback, spotted owlets, shikra, etc.

Timings: 6am to 6 pm everyday

Entry fees: Rs. 500 per car (any number of people in car allowed). It includes camera fees. You can park on the lake boundary road and then climb on the walking trail.

Best time to visit: Winter mornings. January and February are the best seasons from a personal experience for maximum bird spotting.

How to reach: It is 25km from Ahmedabad so best to drive by car or vehicle. It is a favorite route amongst cyclists, too.

Nalsarovar Lake

The Nalsarovar Lake is one of the largest water bird sanctuary in the country with an area of over 110 sq.km and is one of the most important birdwatching destinations around Ahmedabad.

The National Committee on Wetlands for intensive conservation has identified it to be one of the 15 important wetlands of India and was the only Ramsar site in Gujarat. The lake harbours one of the highest populations of waterfowl anywhere in India.

Nalsarovar is nothing short of liquid gold in the mornings and the sunsets are equally mesmerizing when the flock of birds take off together against the orange sun.

Due to the sheer size of the lake, one has to hire a boat to go in the lake. The locals are boat owners and you will probably have to haggle as they try to extort extravagant amounts especially if you are not a local.

The prices are capped by the forest department but still the boat owners will bribe you to take to an exclusive place. If you are a serious photographer then I’ll say avoid the boat but if you there just for picnic, I’ll suggest otherwise. My recommendation would be not to pay the boat owner unless you have seen the place and you are confident of having a good time.

Timings: 6 am to 5:30 pm everyday

Entry fees: Rs. 60 per person, Rs. 100 per camera, Rs. 220 per person for boat (duration: 2 hours). Car parking is extra. In case you want to spend more time on the boat, the charges are extra.

Best time to visit: Winter mornings. October to February is the ideal time.

How to reach: It is 60km from Ahmedabad and ideal to drive by personal or hired car.

Vadla Lake

If haggling with the boat guy is not in your best interest and you want to enjoy birdwatching at your own pace, Vadla is the right place for you. It is in the close vicinity to Nalsarovar (25 km) and you can walk around the dam water to capture bird photos.

Vadla is generally ignored by tourists as their favorite attraction of boating doesn’t exist here, which works out best for serious birdwatchers. Vadla generally comes into highlight only when Nalsarovar dries out after a bad monsoon so tourists then flock there.

But for years now, Vadla has seen a steady flock of migratory birds in its waters and that is why it is an important birdwatching destinations around Ahmedabad.

The favorite and most in number being – Demoiselle cranes – thousands of them. In early January 2019, when we visited we counted over 3000 of them doing their business of calling, preening, foraging and practicing display. The Demoiselle Cranes are indigenously found in central Eurasia, Mongolia and North Eastern China and spend their winters in Gujarat.

Other commonly seen water birds are also in plenty in Vadla and your camera will have a gala time clicking away.

Best time to visit: Winter months – October to February.

How to reach: It is 90km from Ahmedabad and ideal to drive by personal or hired car.

Pariej Lake

Another wetland called Pariej is located in the Kheda district of Gujarat. Because of its location it is closer to 2 cities in Gujarat – Ahmedabad and Vadodara. If you happen to visit Pariej in February, you will be welcomed by the pink blanket of lotuses. A Pheasant tailed jacana will be going around his business and you will notice a lot of moorhens trying to catch their breakfast. Pied kingfishers may dart around and painted storks may just pose pretty for you. That’s Pariej for you.

Indroda Park

Indroda Nature Park, Gandhinagar is a game changer for terrestrial birds and a must visit place for birdwatching community. Yes, it has a zoo but the number of birds you see on the trees and the vicinity are phenomenal. Indroda Nature Park (INP) is spread over an area of about 400 hectare in Gandhinagar- and is divided in two parts – the western part is Indroda Nature Park and the eastern part is Wilderness Park.

Most commonly seen birds here are Indian peafowl – hundreds of them dancing, eating, singing, 3 types of kingfishers, Coppersmith barbet, spotted owlet, painted storks, rose ringed parakeet and so many more.

Timings: 8am to 6pm

Entry fees: Rs. 30/person. Parking fees extra depending on type of vehicle.

Best time to visit: All around the year in morning.

I am a believer in spending vacation in Indian jungles. They soothe and calm visitors from the hectic technology ridden lives. 

While the tiger reserves in MP (Madhya Pradesh) such as Bandhavgarh, Panna, Kanha and Pench are extremely popular among tourists and wildlife enthusiasts, Satpura takes a backseat when it comes to choosing it for tiger tourism.

There is enough density of big cats in Satpura Tiger Reserve, but the sheer size of the forest makes it a little bit difficult as compared to the popular counterparts.

However, that does not mean Satpura National Park should be left out because it is a haven for sighting many other mammals and birds.

WHERE IS SATPURA TIGER RESERVE?

Satpura Tiger Reserve is a national park located in the Hoshangabad, Betul and Chhindwara districts of Madhya Pradesh. The park is part of the Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve. It is one of the closest reserves from the state capital of Bhopal.

The high mountains, deep gorges and dense forests of Satpura hold secrets bountiful that one can discover only by venturing further into its unexplored terrain. Located in the Hoshangabad, Betul and Chhindwara districts of Madhya Pradesh, Satpura Tiger Reserve, a part of the Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve, attracts a large crowd of tourists each year.

The topography of the park consists of deep gorges, mountains, reservoirs, backwaters and mixed deciduous forests, providing a range of habitats to suit a variety of animals.

WILDLIFE OF SATPURA NATIONAL PARK

Although Satpura is notified as a tiger reserve, the diversity of wildlife is huge. The next best mammal to tiger is the leopard and sloth bear and the sightings between the sal and teak trees is just fantastic.

The reserve was notified in the year 2000 and is home to over 90 species of trees, 50 species of mammals, 300 species of birds, 100 species of butterflies and more than 30 species of reptiles.

Why is Satpura famous?

Satpura National Park is rich in biodiversity of trees and wildlife. The animals here include sloth bear, Indian bison, leopard, sambar, chital, nilgai, dholes (wild dogs), four-horned antelope, wild boar, black buck, gecko, Indian fox, porcupine, flying squirrel, barking deer, and Indian giant squirrel.

The bird diversity is amazing too with birds such as many varieties of owls, eagles, buzzards, kites and hornbills.
Although other animals are seen in most national parks in India such as Manas National Park, Assam, Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand, and Gir National Park, Gujarat, sloth bear is unique for these forests.

Zones in Satpura Tiger Reserve

Satpura is divided into 4 core zones and 4 buffer zones. 

Core zones are Churna, Madhai, Mallupura and Panaarpani while the buffer zones are Pipariya, Jamani Dev, Parsapani and Tamia Delakhari. Madhai and Churna are the most popular of all the entry gates of Satpura National Park.

Satpura National Park has three kinds of safari options – jeep (gypsy), boat and walking. It is possible to book safari online.

Jeep Safari

Depending on the zone, the entry gates are different. One gypsy safari will cost INR 3500/- (includes vehicle and guide charges) and another INR 1500/- for entry permits to the park. The gypsy can accommodate up to 6 visitors other than the gypsy driver and forest guide.

Boat Safari

Boat safari happens in Tawa Reservoir through narrow water inlets of the Denwa River. I did not do the boat safari in Satpura but it surely looked refreshing. I have done boat safari in Periyar National Park because that is the only way to safari there, but the chances of sighting wildlife is less from a boat safari. Still, a fun activity and among the things to do in Satpura.

Tickets for boat safari are available near the office at Madhai gate. Boat safari cost is INR 500/- per person.

Walking safari in Satpura National Park

One of the highlights of Satpura is the option of walking safari in buffer zones. Walking amidst the beautiful teak and sal trees trying to sight wildlife is a thrill worth experiencing. Walking safari is conducted with a trained naturalist and guide who take visitors on a predefined route. The walking safari is offered by hotels and resorts. Ask your resort if they offer one!

There are options of night safari in Satpura as well.

Safari Timings

Morning and afternoon safaris are of 3 hours duration. The morning safari timing is 6 am to 9 am and afternoon is 3 pm to 6 pm. 

There is a possibility of a full day safari in Churna zone that lasts from early morning to noon and again 3 pm to 6 pm.

Safari vehicles

Safari vehicles are jeep or gypsy vehicles that are open from top and side with safety bars to hold on both sides. It is compulsory to enter the tiger reserve in these designated gypsies with an allotted guide and driver.

In Churna zone, tourists can take their own pollution free, four-wheeled vehicle capable of going through the rough forest terrain.

Best time to visit Satpura Tiger Reserve

Satpura National Park is open from mid-October until the end of June. Just like all national parks in India, the Satpura reserve is closed for the monsoon season (July to mid-October). During May and June the temperatures are extremely high such as 40 – 50°C. Winter months are very cold with temperatures as low as 4 – 5°C in early mornings.

Both morning and afternoon safari provide different vantage points for wildlife sightings and I suggest doing both of them from different zones.

Satpura has 3 forest rest houses at Pachmarhi, 2 at Churna and 1 at Madhai with double bedrooms. These are basic rooms that can be booked through the Satpura Tiger Reserve office.

There are many private hotels and resorts on the Denwa periphery as well as near the other zone gates.

I stayed at the Goldmark Resort which is right on the bank of Tawa Reservoir. The view from most rooms is of the reservoir and is beautiful. Amenities include indoor games, library and pool. The resort can help you book the tickets for Satpura Tiger Reserve.

How To Get Around Satpura National Park

By Air

Bhopal is the closest city from Satpura Tiger Reserve at 150 km connected via flight. From Bhopal, one can hire a taxi to reach the reserve. There aren’t many options for booking a taxi upon arrival so it is best to request a pick-up from the hotel/resort where you are staying.

By Train

Itarsi is a prominent railway junction with trains from all across the country and is just 70 km away. Piparia (40 km), Sohagpur (20 km), Hoshangabad (70 km), Bhopal (140 km), and are well-suited stations for Satpura. There are several trains to these stations on a daily basis. From these stations, one has to hire a taxi.

By Road

One can drive from Bhopal via Hoshangabad city, Betul city or Pipariya town to reach Madhai gate. The best part about reaching the Madai gate is that one has to get on a boat and cross the Denwa river. The commute is included in the safari cost.

SATPURA TIGER RESERVE EXPERIENCE

Why waste a weekend near a tiger reserve by not going there?

My husband and I were to travel to Itarsi for a family function and this question arose. Combining social functions and festivals with wildlife trips is our motto! And hence a trip was planned to Satpura National Park. We called up our go to guide and wildlife planner – Joy of WildchasersIndia and booked 2 safaris to Satpura – our first MP jungle!

Our cousin picked us up from the Itarsi train junction at 9 am and we headed towards Madai in the car. This road trip in February included crossing country roads through wheat fields swaying happily in the crisp cold wind. Briefly it was time for a pit stop that included bhaji wada and chai!

In about 2 hours we reached our hotel on the banks of Tawa Reservoir. After check-in, we napped, freshened up and had lunch.

We walked about 500 meters to the boat jetty. The boat service starts at 2:30 pm and takes visitors to the other bank, to the Madai gate.

Safari in Madai zone

At the Madai gate jeeps were allotted to us with a driver and guide. We entered the gate at 3 pm. 

Our guide gave us a brief introduction about the Satpura reserve – the area covered, the diversity, zones, etc.

20 minutes into the safari, our guide sighted a family of Sloth Bears – a mother with 2 sub-adult cubs. As they crossed the road, sniffed trees and played with each other, our cameras kept busy. We spent a good 15 minutes in their presence and went further. 

The next 2 hours were spent looking for pugmarks, hearing alarm calls of langurs, birdwatching and just soaking in the forest vibe. 

Unfortunately it turned out to be a dry safari (no tiger sightings). However, we saw plenty of crocodiles, spotted deer, sambar deer and birds.

The sunset on Denwa backwaters was extremely picturesque and we spent some peaceful moments on the river bank.

Safari in Churna zone

When Joy told us that there was an option of a full day safari in Satpura Tiger Reserve, we were extremely excited and wanted to make use of it. The excitement further fueled when he informed us that we would be crossing the Madai zone into the core zone of the forest and then entering into the Churna zone.

We followed the same routine – went to the boat jetty, crossed the bank and a safari was allotted to us at Madai to go to Churna.

The cold winter winds made our teeth chatter and froze our hands. But the eyes were open for any movement and ears for any alarm calls.

On this day too, we saw crocodiles, Indian bison, herds of spotter deer, sambar deer and 3 types of owls. 

We took a break and had our breakfast at one of the rest stops in the Churna zone. With yummy parathas, sandwiches, fruits and chai packed by our hotel, we fueled up with the hope of spotting tigers in Satpura.

The jungle provided us many opportunities for the possibility of tiger sightings with alarm calls and fresh pugmarks. Unfortunately, the morning safari turned out to be dry as well, and we headed towards the Churna forest rest house for our lunch.

Here, we met with other wildlife enthusiasts and many stories entertained us from previous days and years. A group showed us their photographs of a leopard from earlier in the day. Another lady shared her experience of sighting a tiger from last year. A scrumptious lunch later, we were pleasantly surprised by a visitor.

Now it was time for the afternoon safari and we drove to all the possible places where tiger territory is. We checked out water holes and other areas. 

Finally, some fresh pugmarks!

The pugmarks stayed with us for almost 2 km and according to our guide the tiger crossed this area when we were lunching!

It was almost 4:30 pm and we had to leave the Churna zone to get into Madai and leave from Madai at 6pm – the gate closing time.

As we drove towards Madai, the pugmarks appeared again, only to disappear in the bushes after a while. Another jeep who had noticed the pugmarks was on standstill as they also heard a faint growl. We waited for a bit for a movement, a call, a growl, but nothing happened.

We drove back to Madai with no sightings of the tiger or leopard but fantastic memories of Satpura jungle.

• Be quiet in the jungle and maintain jungle decorum.
• You may carry water and snacks in the jeep but do not dispose of plastic or leftover food in the jungle. Keep it in your bag or gypsy and dispose of it safely once you return to the hotel.
• Do not feed anything to wild animals.

Spending a weekend in Mount Abu or more, the following are some of the places to visit in Mount Abu.

Dilwara Temple, Mount Abu

Built between the 11th and 13th centuries, the Dilwara Temple of Mount Abu is a Jain temple. Mount Abu tourism cannot be complete without visiting Dilwara temple also known as Delvada temple.

Dilwara temple is made in the Maru-Gurjara architecture from the Solanki era. The same Solankis who built the complex Modhera Sun Temple and Rani-ki-Vav in Gujarat.

The Jain Temples at Dilwara evoke a sense of awe with the exquisite sculpting in ceilings, domes, columns and walls. The temple is a finished canvas for many unnamed artists who recreated images from Indian myths and legends on stones. 

Carved in white marble, the temple is known for its extraordinary architecture. Dilwara temple features unique craftsmanship, with intricate carvings all over the temple complex. The sculptures that adorn the temples are of numerous gods, goddesses, yaksas, dancers, musicians, apsaras and nagins. Other designs include trees, flowers and geometrical designs. 

The most outstanding feature of Dilwara temple is the thousand-petalled Lotuses that decorate the domes in the Rangmandaps.

Dilwara Jain Temples are made up of five temples – Vimal Vasahi, Luna Vasahi, Pittalhar, Parshvanath, and Mahavir Swami, all of which have exemplary structures and give off unmatched spiritual vibes.

Boating in Nakki Lake, Mount Abu

One of the most favourite Mount Abu tourist places is Nakki Lake. 

According to a local legend, the lake was built by Gods to protect themselves from a common enemy called ‘Bashkali’. While another legend says that the local king had ordered that whoever dug a lake with his nails overnight, could marry his daughter. It was called ‘Nakh ki Jheel’ nakh meaning nails and jheel meaning lake.

But legends aside, Nakki Lake is India’s first man-made lake, at the height of 11,000 meters. 

There are many ways to spend time at Nakki Lake. While the most popular activity is boating in Nakki Lake, visitors can take a walk around the walking track around the lake periphery. There is a garden and sitting area with kid’s activity area. Visitors can also engage in water sports such as zorbing overlooking the sunset. There are small vendors selling souvenirs and other knick-knacks. And there is a food court too.

The sunset at Nakki Lake Mount Abu is spectacular and one must plan to visit here during sunset.

Nakki Lake boating fees:

INR 100 per person for 30 minutes pedal boat ride.

INR 150 per person for 30 minutes shikara boat ride.

Toad Rock

Located near Nakki Lake, Toad Rock is a popular viewpoint and Mount Abu sightseeing place. This naturally formed rock is shaped like a toad which attracts tourists for a photograph. Visitors have to climb approximately 250 steps, to enjoy panoramic views of Nakki Lake and the Aravalli range.

Guru Shikhar

A short 15 km drive from Mount Abu lies the highest peak of Aravalli Range – Guru Shikhar. Guru Shikar point is at the height of 1,722 meters above the sea-level. It is not only a tourist attraction in Mount Abu but is a religious site as well. 

The peak is dedicated to Lord Dattatreya. Datta in Sanskrit means given. Dattatreya, according to Hindu belief is the son given to the sage Atri and his wife Anasuya by the Trinity, Vishnu, Shiva, and Brahma. Another temple at Guru Shikhar is Dattatreya’s mother Ahilya. 

There is a huge bell with the inscription 1411 A.D on the peak which is a huge attraction. The sound from this bell can be heard from long distances.

From the car park area, the peak is approximately 600 steps away. The steps are short and easy to climb. The sides of the steps are lined with local shops selling souvenirs, jewellery, bags, and clothes. There are small eateries selling lemon juice, Maggi and wafer packets.

Parking fees: INR 50 per car.

Achaleshwar Mahadev Temple, Mount Abu

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Achaleshwar Mahadev Temple is a popular attraction among pilgrims and tourists. Located on the foothills of Achaleshwar Fort, the temples have beautiful carvings. Achaleshwar Mahadev temple is said to have been built around a giant toe-print of Lord Shiva, making it one of the most revered religious sites in Mount Abu. 

There are smaller shrines in the temple complex dedicated to other gods and goddesses.

Achalgarh Fort, Rajasthan

Located 10 km away from Mount Abu, Achalgarh is a treasure trove in itself with many things to do and see. Visitors can easily spend one day in Achalgarh.

The fort is estimated to have been built in the 9th century by the Paramara dynasty and later renovated by Rana Kumbha in the 15th century. Bordered by massive walls that enclose a few beautiful temples inside, the Achalgarh Fort offers interesting glimpses of Mewar architecture.

Visitors can start by paying a visit to the Achaleshwar Mahadev Temple and the Jain temple on the foothills. A short ride away is the steps to Achalgarh. There are jeeps driven by locals who take you to the dedicated point from the labyrinth lanes. This is a 1 km ride and they charged INR 300 for pick up and drop for 7 of us.

The climb through the steps of Achalgarh fort takes visitors to the entrance of the Jain temple. White marble pillars and carved sculptures envelop the courtyard making one feel at peace. The shrine is a few more steps away from the courtyard. The main idol weighs several tons and is made of Panchaloha (5 metals). The temple is a “chaumukhi”, with an idol facing all four cardinal directions.

Chamunda Mata Temple and Gopichand ji Cave, Mount Abu

After climbing further visitors come across a gate welcoming them to Chamunda Mata temple. A few steps away is the Chamunda Mata temple and a small lake in front of it. According to a legend, this lake was filled by the tears of Saint Mirabai.

Further to the right, a pebbled road leads to Gopichand ji Cave a saint who did ‘tapasya’ (austerity) for 12 years. He and his nephew did tapasya for 12 years in a competitive spirit to please Goddess Kali. Pleased with the devotion, Goddess Kali presented herself from a rock. The impact was such that an idol in the shape of goddess was left behind. The rock formation is coloured and worshippers go here to get blessed by the goddess.

The view from Achalgarh is panoramic, giving a bird’s eye view of the Aravalli range.

Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary

If wildlife is your calling then Mount Abu will not disappoint. With rich flora and fauna, this Mount Abu wildlife sanctuary is a heavenly place.

The sanctuary is spread across an area of 288 sq. km and is home to a variety of rare and exotic animals. Most frequently seen wildlife include the Indian leopard, sloth bear, pangolin, Indian fox, and wild boar, to name a few. There are also around 250 species of birds and a variety of trees and plants found here.

In order to experience nature in its raw form, there are many Mount Abu camping options. They take visitors on walking nature trails and adventure enthusiasts can stay in tents in the jungles. This adrenaline rush makes many travellers visit Mount Abu every year, especially during monsoon. Rains make Mount Abu lush green and it is a sight to behold.

Peace Park, Mount Abu

As the name suggests, Peace Park is a park that is surrounded by a beautiful environment and serenity. It is an ideal place for meditation and peaceful recreation. 

Established by the Brahma Kumari’s, it is an establishment that is surrounded by lush greenery and a garden maintained by their management. It has a playground, a rock garden with succulents, citruses, orchids, ornamental shrubs, roses, creepers, climbers, and other flora.

There are also stone caves and huts used for meditation. 

Tourists can visit Peace Park with permission from Brahma Kumaris regional centres.

Honeymoon Point, Mount Abu

The Honeymoon Point in Mount Abu is at an elevation of 4000 feet and offers an exquisite sunset against the backdrop of Nakki Lake. 

It is a popular tourist destination in Mount Abu. although the name is given to attract honeymooners, all tourists throng this point for wonderful views of the valley. for couples and nature lovers. 

Beware, as this area gets notorious for traffic jams and parking is a nightmare. On long weekends, one may get a parking space 1km away.

Universal Peace Hall, Mount Abu

An architectural marvel, Universal Peace Hall was constructed in 1983 and can accommodate 5000 people at the same time. The hall has no pillars which means there is a seamless interaction between the speakers and listeners. 

Universal Peace Hall is the main assembly hall in the Brahma Kumari Spiritual University. Another unique feature of this hall is the facility to translate speeches into 16 different languages simultaneously during events.

Visitors can learn Rajya Yoga meditation and participate in spirituality and meditation workshops, seminars, conferences and courses here.

Crocodile park Trevor’s Tank, Mount Abu

Trevor’s Tank is one of the interesting places to visit in Mount Abu. It is a crocodile breeding site in the midst of the forest. Due to its unique location and availability of water. Trevor’s Tank is home to a variety of other wildlife and birds. This is an offbeat place in Mount Abu.

Gaumukh Temple, Mount Abu

Gaumukh Temple in Mount Abu is the most important pilgrimage site and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Worshippers and tourists wanting to visit this temple have to climb 700 steps among lush green forests. The temple houses idols of Nandi, Lord Rama, Lord Krishna, and Saint Vashishth. 

One of the reasons which make this place popular is a mysterious stream of water flowing from the mouth of a large marble statue of a bull.

Mount Abu Sunset point

Located near Nakki Lake, Sunset Point as the name suggests offers great views of the sunset. A short walk away, the sunset point is a good place for families to have a picnic.

Shopping in Mount Abu

Shopping in Mount Abu can be quite time-consuming due to the variety of stuff available. It sells the best of both states – Gujarat and Rajasthan. There are many shopping areas in Mount Abu but the main street leading to Nakki Lake is the most vibrant one. Shopping is one of the most important things to do in Mount Abu. Other bazaars are in Achalgarh and Guru Shikhar. These brightly coloured markets reminded me of Shopping for souvenirs in Jaipur.

The shops sell traditional Rajasthani items such as lac bangles, silver jewellery, leheriya dupattas, wooden handicrafts, etc. Other souvenirs from Rajasthan include elephant-printed pants, turban-printed t-shirts, keychains, fridge magnets, wooden name plates, and so much more.

Must-try food in Mount Abu

Being a tourist destination, Mount Abu in Rajasthan has developed food that caters to all visitors. The hotels and cafes serve Rajasthani and Gujarati thali meals as well as Punjabi and continental cuisine. Indian popular street food like panipuri, pav-bhaji and chaats are easily available. Softy Ice Cream in Mount Abu

Softy ice cream is an extremely popular dessert in Mount Abu. There are shops lined up near Nakki Lake selling softy ice cream. The ice cream is softer and less dense as compared to regular ice cream cones which is why it is called softy.

Rabdi in Mount Abu

Rabdi is sweet thick milk, that is made when the milk is left on flame for hours. The milk turns into cream and that thick cream along with the same milk is added with sugar and dry fruits. Rabdi can be served hot or cold depending on your preference and is available in both variants.

Mount Abu enjoys good weather all over the year and hence it is good to visit at all times. Each season has its own speciality and people throng this hill station for the same reasons. Mount Abu gives a cooling respite in summers. However, the day temperature would hover around 38 degrees celsius. 

Monsoon in Mount Abu is special because the Aravalli ranges come alive with waterfalls, mist and lush greenery everywhere. This is the perfect time to trek.

While winters in Mount Abu are super chilly with cold winds. In extreme winter, there have been reports of Nakki lake freezing. 

All in all, tourists can visit Mount Abu any time of the year.

By flight

The nearest airport to Mount Abu is Udaipur located at a distance of 210 km. One can also get down at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Airport at Ahmedabad, 221 km away. Both these airports are connected to all major cities of India. One needs to hire a car or take a train to Abu Road.

By train

The nearest railway station to Mount Abu is Abu Road which is 32 km away. There are regular trains to Abu Road from Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and other major cities.

By road

Regular buses (Both private and state government) ply between Mount Abu and Ahmedabad, Udaipur, Jaipur and Delhi.

Hotels in Mount Abu cater to all kinds of tourists. There are villas, hotels, homestays and resorts in Mount Abu. 

I have visited multiple times and my latest accommodation in Mount Abu was at Hummingbird Resorts. The resort is near Achalgarh fort, a little far from Mount Abu and the touristy Nakki lake. This is a breather because there are no traffic jams or parking problems here. The resort has a nicely maintained garden, swimming pool, kids’ play area and good food options. The resort is vila with 3 rooms and a common sitting and dining area. If you are travelling in a group, it is a great option.

Whenever Kerala is mentioned, one imagines tranquil waters lined with coconut trees and slow village life. Well, Kumarakom is exactly this! The small sleepy village of Kumarakom is nestled on the banks of the largest freshwater lake in Kerala ans is home to the backwaters, the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, agriculture, boating and fishing facilities. It only made sense to start Responsible Tourism in Kumarakom.

Responsible tourism in Kumarakom: The beginning

Kumarakom was declared a Special Tourism Zone by the Government of Kerala in 2005. In May 2007, the first destination level meeting was held and the Destination Level Responsible Tourism Committee and three working groups on economic, environmental and social levels were formed. The official inauguration of Responsible Tourism in Kumarakom happened in March 2008 and it was the Kumarakom Gram Panchayat that initiated the implementation of Responsible Tourism at Kumarakom.

The advantage of experiencing village life with the locals is the economic, social and environmental sustainability with minimum negative impact. I experienced Community based tourism at Baradpani in Gujarat and I am so glad rural tourism is happening in other parts of India and here to stay!

How to book a Responsible Tourism Tour in Kumarakom?

Tickets can be purchased from the Responsible Tourism Office Kumarakom near the Kavanatinkara jetty. However, due to less influx of tourists post covid, the office is closed. The tour can be arranged by placing a request on this email id: rt@keralatourism.org / dc.rtkumarakom@gmail.com

Where does the tour begin and its duration?

The journey begins from the picturesque Kavanatinkara jetty. A Shikara boat transfers the visitors from the jetty into the narrow backwaters of Kumarakom. A local guide is allotted to each group who briefs the visitors about the Kumarakom backwaters, the landscape, the lush green surroundings, cuisine and wildlife.

Activities under Responsible Tourism in Kumarakom

‘Welcome to Kumarakom’ said Sabu our Responsible Tourism in Kumarakom guide as we walked to our designated Shikara ride. It was interesting to see all the Shikara boats neatly parked on the backwater rocking against each other with the waves of the passerby boat’s motor. It took some direction giving and juggling to get the boat out in the main channel from its parking spot. Once out, we were on our way to the Kumarakom village.

Sabu told us all about the backwaters and how village life was normal in spite of the covid outbreak. We passed the typical village life – men cleaning their boats, women washing the utensils on the bank, ducks feeding in the water and the normal boat traffic along the channel. It certainly reminded me of my trip to Backwaters of Alleppey.

As the broad water channel narrowed a bit, we came across a small section where there was abundant lotus blooming. Sabu bent from the boat and caught hold of a pink lotus and said ‘Let me make a necklace for you’. 

Surprised and curious about how a necklace would be made from a flower we held on tight to our phone video-graphing him while he went about making sections in the lotus stem giving it a beautiful pattern. He pulled out some what seemed like strings from the end of the lotus stem and knotted them together. And voila it really was a beautiful necklace.

As we pondered over his amazing necklace making technique, we reach our first activity place.

Coconut coir making 

Coconut is such a versatile tree and Kerala knows how to best utilise it. From using its fruit for water, and coconut shell in making handicrafts, to using its stem for deriving an alcoholic drink, using its trunk as timber to make houses and boats, and its leaves in making thatched roofs and baskets. 

We arrived at Ajitha’s house who demonstrated how she is utilizing the choirs in making ropes. Coconut coir is made using the coconut husk that is abundantly available here. While she had the raw material ready for us, she draped herself in a checkered skirt locally known as lungi and worn by men and made a kangaroo-like pouch where she kept the coir.

She then put the coir in a small motor run machine and the rope just started forming as she kept feeding more coir and playing a small tug of war with it.

In order to demonstrate how it was traditionally done, she placed herself on a mat on the ground and manually started rolling the coir until a rope was formed. That certainly took a lot of time and it made the hands rough due to the coconut fibres.

Some of my group members tried their hands on this and enjoyed themselves.

Natural shampoo making

The locals have been extremely self-sufficient and rely on garden supplies for everything. Be it fruits and vegetables from the kitchen garden to the fresh fish catch right outside the house, from herbal plants to cure diseases to plants that help in cleaning your hair. 

Sabu walked to the fence of the house and plucked some leaves. He placed them in a bowl with some water and started gently crushing them. Soon enough, foam started forming! It was hibiscus leaves, a plant that readily grows across India. Forget about going to the market and buying chemical-laden shampoo in a plastic bottle!

Coconut tree climbing

As we walked in Ajitha’s kitchen garden which was laden with fruit trees such as jackfruit, passionfruit, papaya, mango, banana and more, we reached some tall coconut trees.

Sabu explained how it was an arduous task to climb coconut trees in the olden times and it required skill and practice to climb them. However, with new technology, there is coconut tree climber equipment that makes the task easy, safe and quick. As Sabu demonstrated the new equipment he mentioned how women are also climbing these trees. Talk about women empowerment! 🙂

Fishing in Kumarakom

We came out of Ajitha’s house after tasking some delicious fruits from her kitchen garden, crossed the road and reached the water canal. Sabu came with a fish net to demonstrate how the local fishermen catch fish.

A big swing and the net went into the water. A few moments later it was pulled out and 2 small fishes were trying hard to breathe. They were safely returned back to the water.

Next, we walked to Sathi’s house to check out the weaving process.

Weaving coconut leaves

As soon as Sathi saw us walking into the compound of her house, she placed a mat for herself, made herself comfortable and pulled some a dried coconut branch. She then carefully started braiding the leaves to form a pattern.

In yesteryears, before the advent of brick, mortar and cement, houses here were made with mud and thatched roof made of weaves of coconut leaves or palm leaves. This kept the house cool and due to the abundant availability in the garden, it could be easily changed when required.

The weaved leaves are now used in ornamenting cafes, or weaving baskets.

I tried my hand on this and kept forgetting the braids. But Sathi was patient enough and taught me well till I could weave without any mistake.

Toddy Tapping

As we walked to another house overlooking the paddy fields, a kingfisher’s call made the heads turn. Two men clad in lungi were busy in their conversation. One of them hung a terracotta pot around his waist and quickly climbed the adjacent coconut tree. This was a shorter tree than the one we previously saw at Ajitha’s house.

The process of making toddy, an alcoholic beverage, begins at the top of a coconut tree, where a toddy tapper climbs to gather the sap. A new unopened bud of coconut flower is cut with a knife leaving 95% on the tree. The whole bud is then beaten and pounded with a hammer, bud gets swollen. The cut bud is bound with a tender coconut leaf or a rope ahead of the cut part, and a paste of taali leaf or clay is applied to the cut portion. This keeps bacterial infection away and makes the bud ooze sap, not allowing it to go dry and heal. The clay helps in extracting more toddy and it smells and tastes different.

After beating the new flower bud for a week the flower begins to ooze sap which can be collected twice daily. The same steps are repeatedly daily– cutting, beating, taali leaf paste application.

We saw the toddy tapping in Kumarakom and the tapper collected fresh toddy which we tried. The fragrance was very strong and it felt like an alcoholic drink. But after tasting it, it wasn’t alcoholic and tasted interesting.

With this, 2 hours of Responsible Tourism in Kumarakom activity came to an end. We had to go back to our Shikara boat and back to the hotel.

A visit to LRK is perfect for wildlife enthusiasts as the area is brimming with wildlife and birdlife. Having already spent a weekend in Little Rann of Kutch, I looked forward to my second visit to explore the salt pans of Little Rann of Kutch, wildlife, culture, religious sites and the crafts of Kutch. 

Ideally, visitors should spend one day in Little Rann of Kutch so as to cover the evening safari and morning safari. Different safari timings ensure visitors have a better chance and variety of sighting wildlife. Accommodation in Little Rann of Kutch includes eco-resorts in Rann. While there are only a few, Rann Riders, Dasada is one of the oldest and traditional stay options in LRK. Here is my review from my recent stay.

Little Rann of Kutch Entry Points

Unlike a typical safari park which has a fixed entrance and exit, Little Rann of Kutch has multiple entry points. The permits are given to local resorts who in turn take tourists into the sanctuary area. There are 2 entry points namely Bajana and Jogad. Both points are over 50km from the other. Rann Riders is located near Bajana entry point in an area called Dasada.

About Rann Riders Eco-Resort

In the huge expanse of Little Rann of Kutch, lies the camouflaged property of Rann Riders. Having reached very late in the evening, we were welcomed with a Rose drink and handed over cottage keys. We found our way to the rooms through a small pathway surrounded by trees.

Over dinner, I strike a conversation with Mr. Rizwan Malik who is the manager of the property and cousin of the owner Mr Mujaid Malik. He tells me how his family is a descendant from Baktiar-ud-din, who gave a portion of land in Dasada and its surrounding villages in return for military services provided to the Sultan of Gujarat in the 15th century. They were given the title of Malik Bakhan-1 and his successors continue to use Malik as their title and now as their last name. The Maliks participated in the siege of many forts and the battles of Kuva and Rankhundal in the 1400s and 1500s.

Mr. Malik has spent many years overseas, always had a calling for his village Dasada and wanted to do something for its development. Due to his keen interest in wildlife, he decided to set up an eco-resort to cater to tourists for wild-ass tourism. Rann Riders opened its door to visitors in the year 1999 with 13 cottages and have now expanded to 28.

Rann Riders Safari Resort is situated near the village of Dasada, which offers village tours, wildlife tours and bird-watching safaris.

My Stay at Rann Riders Property 

The resort area consists of ethnic cottages known as Bhunga and Kooba. In the classic resort-style, the cottages are located away from each other. 2-3 cottages are located in a bunch with their own private garden and lotus pond and the next few are a little farther away.

There are 3 types of cottages in Rann Riders- 

Bhunga (the traditional circular eco-huts made of mud) inspired from Rabari community of Kutch

Kooba (rectangular cottages made of mud) inspired from Bajania community of Kutch

Stone cottages (made from Dhrangadhra stones)

The materials used in making these cottages are locally procured and utilize local mud, cow dung and stones available in the Banni area. The mud and cow dung help in keeping the inside of the homes cool in extreme summers and warm in winters. It is a perfect and sustainable insulation technique.

All the cottages are adorned with Lippan Kaam (Mud-work) and embellished with mirrors. The cottages are fitted with modern amenities to make the stay comfortable. Each of the cottages has an a/c twin-bedroom, with a comfortable cane bed, a dry dressing area and a tiled bathroom with western-style toilet fittings and hot-and-cold showers.

Property at Rann Riders, Dasada

I woke up the next day with the chirping of birds outside my Kooba cottage. A pink lotus had blossomed in the lotus pond in front of my cottage and that inspired me to go around the property. 

I took a walk on the well-laid pathway that had colourful blooming bougainvillaea trees. I came across the Rann Riders shooting range. Mr Malik set up the shooting range realizing the dearth of such options nearby. Having both kids playing at the state and national levels, Mr Malik was inspired to start the shooting range and followed it up with an academy. The shooting range overlooks a beautifully manicured garden.

As I walked back I noticed a swamp behind the trees and a duck family enjoying their morning breakfast. And I decided to have mine before heading towards the safari.

Food at Rann Riders

Rann Riders offers a Buffet option for all meals. The meals are a combination of Gujarati (local food) and Continental options. There are many vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. Tandoori food is a speciality of the resort. On prior intimation, they serve regional specialities of the Maliks of Dasada, as well as seafood. 

Breakfast has fresh fruits from their fruit farm like guavas and fresh juice.

Safari in Wild Ass Sanctuary, Little Rann of Kutch

Rann Riders have about 5-6 open jeeps with knowledgeable guides that double up as the driver. The safari lasts for 3-4 hours and the route covers various habitats like salt flats, wetlands, scrublands and grasslands. There is an option for morning or evening safari or both. For bird-watching or wildlife photography enthusiasts, special routes are curated to get the best of LRK.

The Wild Ass Sanctuary is located a 40-minute drive away from the resort. The sanctuary is home to Asiatic Wild Ass the only home of the Wild Ass in India. The safari across the Little Rann has bets (islands) on the ancient seabed that are now higher grounds covered with grass and scrub. These ‘bets’ support a variety of wildlife including the ‘Gudkhur’ (Asiatic wild ass) which is a chestnut brown member of the horse family. Capable of reaching high speeds when galloping across the Rann, the wild ass is usually seen in small herds.

Other wildlife endemic to the area is Indian Blue Bull, Jackal, Indian Desert Fox, Blackbucks and Hyenas. Birds that are endemic and migratory species include flamingos, pelicans, cranes, Peregrine Falcon, types of harriers and Short Earned Owl.

Things to do in Rann Riders Resort

Rann Riders Resort Dasa is open all year round. So in case one wants to visit in monsoon where the sanctuary is closed, there are multiple ways to spend time in the property.

Horse Riding / Horse Safari

The resort also houses a stable with Kathiawadi and Marwadi horses. It is possible to ride the horses in the property areas or out in the open. The horse riding routes can be customized – walking in the village area or galloping across open desert plains or watching birds and wildlife from horseback in the Little Rann of Kutch. 

Camel Safari

Village safaris are arranged on camelback or camel carts. These safaris take visitors to the nearby villages, pastoral and nomadic settlements, and the workplaces of artisans. They can be customised according to your interest like culture, crafts or natural history.

Enjoy the Property

There are ample places to walk, hand around and laze around. There are sit out areas outside each cottage that either has a verandah, hammock or swing. There are many gardens where one can sit and laze around. 

There is a lake inside the resort on which fishing can be done on a “Catch & Release” method. There are beautiful birds around this lake.

Cultural performance

During a full house, the resort invites local artists for cultural performances during the evenings. Garba and other traditional performances are done by the artists and the visitors can join the dancers in the performance. 

Handicrafts of Kutch

Women from the nearby villages come to the resort to sell handmade jewellery, traditional outfits and home accessories. The intricate bead-work done by the Mirs of Dasada on bangles, armlets, anklets, necklaces & other accessories is stunning. 

It is also possible to tour the pastoral communities of Vadiara and Kharapat Rabaris of Dasada, to see them working on embroidery work and buy something directly from them.

Sustainability initiatives by Rann Riders

Rann Riders Resort is conscious of the environment and has inculcated many sustainable values. Some of its sustainability initiatives include:

• Using local material for the construction of cottages. The mud and cow dung help in keeping the inside of the homes cool in extreme summers and warm in winters. This helps in maintaining energy costs from going too high.
• Waste segregation is religiously practised. The waste is picked up by Dasada gram panchayat.
• The property does not use single-use plastic (SUP). The drinking water is served in glass bottles that are refilled on request. There is negligible use of tissue paper. There are jet sprays in the toilets.

Modhera Sun Temple – 45 km

Modhera Sun Temple is an 11th-century temple dedicated to Sun God. It is easily one of the finest architectural examples of the Solanki dynasty. The Modhera Sun temple walls are adorned with deities, birds, flowers and various stories from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. There are idols symbolizing God Indra, Varuna and Vishwakarma. There are many erotic carvings on the wall like Konark Sun Temple which symbolize the human cycle of birth and death.

The temple features carved Torana mounted on Kirti Stambha (pillars of victory) as the entrances, a large rectangular stepped shrine with 108 smaller shrines, an exquisite 52 pillared Sabha Mandap, and a Sanctum Sanctorum.

Patan – 70 km 

Another gem of the Solanki dynasty is Patan with its Rani-ki-Vav. Declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Rani-ki-Vav is a seven storeyed step-well to the water level. The entire complex is intricately carved depicting the avatars of Lord Vishnu, Hindu Goddesses, Jain idols and beautiful apsaras. 

Best time to visit Dasada, LRK

Dasada is basically a desert and gets super hot in summer. The best time to visit is between the months of December to March. The area becomes dry and there are a lot of migratory birds in the area. Winter temperatures are 25 ℃ during the day and 8-10℃ at night with chilly winds. The summer temperatures hover around 50 ℃.

How to reach Dasada

By Road: Ahmedabad to Rann Riders Dasada is 95 km. The drive from Ahmedabad to Dasada takes about two and half hours through Sanand and Viramgam. Visitors can reach here through personal cars or by hiring private taxis.

By Train: Patadi railway station is 25 Km away from the Sanctuary and the closest to Dasada. Rann Riders can arrange a pick from the station on request.

By Flight: Ahmedabad is the closest airport. 

Final thoughts about Rann Riders Dasada

From the time I checked in until check out, I had a flawless experience. The resort is extremely beautiful with loads of activities. The staff is friendly and one can easily pick up a conversation with them. I happened to tell my Gypsy guide about my interest in birdlife and how I had spotted a short-eared owl in my last visit. He made sure I saw at least a Spotted Owlet in a village nearby!

The service is excellent and the warm hospitality is a warrant I would love to come back and stay here. A sincere thanks to Mr Rizwan Malik, for answering all of my questions and ensuring that we had a memorable experience.

While national parks protecting tigers are more fascinating for visitors, visiting a lion reserve has a different charm in itself. Visitors coming to India should certainly go on a safari to Gir National Park. The Gir National Park is the only abode for Asiatic lions and also has a massive variety of birds. It is the 8th biggest National Park in India with over 670 lions and 500+ leopards in an area of 1400+ square kilometres. 

Safaris are the best way to spot the wildlife of Gir National Park. Dr. Salim Ali during one of his visits to Gir said that Gir could have been a bird sanctuary if not for lions! And it is so true.

If you’re planning a visit to Gir National Park, there are a few things you’ll need to make it comfortable and easy. This safari packing list will have you well prepared for one of the most incredible experiences of your life.

Camera

A good camera is the first item you should have on your safari packing list. There is so much to see in Gir National Park, that you will regret not to bring your camera along – it’s the most important component of your safari equipment. Yes, you can use your smartphone but a long-angle lens will be better. It is also a great alternative to binoculars so that you can see animals that are far away as if they are close up. A good camera allows you to take photos of the amazing animals and the unique wilderness. 

A regular or mirror-less DSLR, semi-DSLR, point-and-shoot camera with good optical zoom is the best to carry in here. For big mammals such as lions and leopards commonly found in Gir National park a telephoto lens of 250-300 mm is ideal. However, if you wish to photography birds, I suggest you bring at least a 500mm lens for clear and crisp shots.

Binoculars

Gir is a heavily forested area with big trees of Sagwan. When driving through the roadways, you may not always be able to get as close to the animals as you’d like. A respectful distance is important, and vehicles can’t go off track, where they would damage important vegetation or disturb and threaten smaller creatures. Because of this, binoculars are an incredibly helpful addition to your Gir safari packing list.

While it is possible to rent binoculars in Corbett National Park, this facility is not available in Gir. if you are an avid wildlife enthusiast, it is high time to invest in a good binocular for wildlife. I own a Olympus 10×50 DPS I and it gives amazing results.

First Aid Kit

While getting hurt on a vehicle safari, is unlikely, do keep in mind that you are in an area that is full of forests and wildlife. Scrapes, cuts and bruises can take place by lighting brushing from an acacia tree thorn or the vehicle metal bar. However, carrying a basic first aid kit is a good idea in your safari packing gear.

Cap and face mask

Wondering what personal items to pack for a safari in India? This may seem like an obvious one, but you can never have too many reminders. Indian summers are harsh and with the open-top vehicle, you are directly bearing the sun. while winter sun is not harsh, the time of your safari will make all the difference. The afternoon safari will be hot whether it is winter or summer. So it only makes sense to carry a cap/hat/stole to cover your head. Use sunscreen lotion if you get easily tanned. 

A face mask is compulsory due to covid-19 precautionary measures and even otherwise it is best to hide your face in a mask to avoid inhaling the dust from the vehicle ahead of you!

You can choose on wearing sunglasses but I will discourage you to do that as you may miss out on seeing a movement in the forest in those polaroid glasses.

Neutral coloured clothes

It is wildlife etiquette to wear neutrally coloured clothes in earth shades so as to blend with safari. Ideally shades of green, brown and grey are perfect for Gir safari packing list. Avoid wearing eye-popping colours such as yellow, red and blue. 

Winter mornings in Gir are super chilly, and the wind from the open gypsy vehicles makes your bone chill. So don’t forget to carry a windcheater/jacket/pullover. Pack light, breathable long-sleeved tops, and comfortable long pants. These will also serve you well in the evenings when the weather cools down. Try to bring neutral coloured warm clothes for the safari.

Logbook / journal

My husband always makes sure to carry a logbook with him. He carefully documents the bird species with an approximate number in his logbook. It is an easy way to go back to tick out the species you have seen. If you find a logbook idea boring, you can do it digitally, by typing it in a phone notebook.

Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary Jamnagar

Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary Jamnagar or Khijadiya Wildlife Sanctuary is located on the western coast of Gujarat near Jamnagar district.

It is near Narara Island, which is full of coral reefs. The sanctuary is unique as it has a combined ecosystem of freshwater and saltwater which has formed over the years.

There are large creeks on one side of the bund which support mangroves while on the other side there is inland vegetation. With ecosystems such as marine water, freshwater, marshy lands, mangroves, salt pans, mudflats, sandy beaches and farmlands, over 300 species of resident as well as migratory birds have been recorded here. It was in 1984 when Dr Salim Ali recorded over 100 species in a day here.

Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary is located 12 km before Jamnagar on the Rajkot-Jamnagar highway and it covers an area of about 6 square kilometres. It was declared a sanctuary in May 1981.

However, it became a natural habitat for local and migratory birds much before the 1920s when the then rulers constructed a small check dam to store waters of the River Ruparel for supply to Jamnagar.

This dam created a unique ecosphere with the freshwater lakes on one side and the salty water of the seas forming marshes on the other to support not only a variety of fauna but also flora.

My visit to Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary

After a quick breakfast at the hotel, I started driving toward Khijadiya around 7 am. In my experience wetland birds are easily spotted until early afternoon, especially in winters due to cold weather. In fact, they come out to bask only once the sun comes out. So starting at 7 am was a good idea.

I turned left towards the milestone pointing to Khijadiya from the highway. 2 km inside the dirt road and I reached the main gate on my left. Thankfully there were very few vehicles which meant fewer people were visiting. Fewer people meant less disturbance to the birds which meant better photography for me. 

After parking the car in the dedicated area, I walked towards the ticket office and came to know the following:

There are 2 zones in Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary Jamnagar

Zone 1: No vehicles allowed. Can explore by walking. Entry fee = Rs 40 per person.

Zone 2: Vehicles (2-wheelers and cars are allowed). Entry fee = Rs 400 per vehicle for up to 6 persons.

A ticket for zone 2 allows you to enter zone 1 also.

The cost of the camera is extra. Rs 200 per camera. Mobile cameras are not chargeable.

Since I have done walking safaris in bird-watching destinations around Ahmedabad, I decided to go for the car safari.

I reached the watchtower while trying to take in the expanse of the wetland and I was in awe. I could actually see the wetland on one side and the salt pans on the others. It was surreal.

I spent a good 4 hours in Khijadiya till the sun became unbearable. While I wanted to quickly visit zone 1, it was not possible to do so. I guess I will come back for it.

How to Reach Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary Jamnagar

By Road: State transport buses and private luxury coaches connect Jamnagar with various cities of Gujarat and Maharashtra. One can even self-drive the car as the roads are in excellent condition. 

By Railway: There are daily trains on the Western Railway with direct connections to Ahmedabad and Mumbai.

By Air: There is a domestic airport which is 10 km away from the city. Various domestic airlines connect Jamnagar to Mumbai.

Best Time to Visit Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary

Summers are harsh with high temperatures and the park is closed during monsoons as the wetlands may get flooded. October to March is the perfect time to plan a trip to the Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary with December being a peak season. The weather is pleasant and you can stay out in the Sun all day long.

Stay for Khijadiya

There is no accommodation inside the Sanctuary and camping is not permitted. The best thing to do is seek accommodation in Jamnagar where there are hotels ranging from budget to luxury as well as dormitories and guesthouses.

Anaya Beacon Hotel and Hotel Aram are good options for accommodation in Jamnagar and for Khijadiya. I stayed in Anaya Beacon and found it to be covid safe, the rooms were clean and the food was amazing. Read my detailed review on Tripadvisor.

According to me, exploring the jungles and trying to spot a bird or animal in bushes is like nothing short of meditation – it takes patience and concentration which makes it a perfect vacation. The fresh air, the calmness and the stillness of a jungle while still knowing there is life prolifering around is an exceptional experience. Always try to choose a property which is on fringe areas of jungles.

These properties are generally jungle guesthouses or old heritage hotels from yesteryear which are ethical and sustainable. There is a high chance of spotting birds and animals in its vicinity through a window, balcony or a patio.

A digital detox destination

Jungles are far from the city’s hustle bustle and busy lives. In most cases, jungles will not have good quality mobile network reception and the properties will discourage having television in rooms giving ample opportunities to disconnect from the world outside.

Vacation in the Indian jungles act as a mental healer

Stress, tension and worries are all problems of city life. Learn about coexistence

There is so much to learn from the second citizens of the jungles after wildlife – the local communities. The communities have been living in coexistence with wildlife for many generations as they are both dependant on the common source – jungles. The local communities and tribes have a  vast knowledge of the flora and fauna and are known to co-exist with the forest and its inhabitants.

Where exactly are these jungles located?

Jungles are commonly known as ‘Forests’ and are located all over India. The Indian Jungles are among the most treasured natural heritage of the country and utmost care is taken to preserve the wildlife species which is why there is a special act formed to preserve the forests. The Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 was enforced to protect the areas with significant forest cover and wildlife. The forests in India are referred to as the wildlife sanctuaries, national parks, tiger reserves and bird sanctuaries. As per the information on Jungles in India it is noted that there are more than 500 national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and tiger reserves in India.

How is entry allowed in the jungles?

Every National Park, Wildlife sanctuary and tiger reserve has entry systems and limited permits where tourists are allowed to visit for a stipulated period of time. Entry to these jungles are subject to availability in the various zones that are present in the National Park.

In big national parks, entry is allowed in jungle vehicles known as gypsies while in bird sanctuaries, entry is allowed on foot or boat in case of wetland. The fringe areas of jungles do not have such strict rules of entry and one can easily explore the area. However it is best to have a guide with you so that you do not get lost or have a backup in case of animal attack, though it seldom happens. Read about Tadoba National Park. 

What is best time to visit the jungles/national park/wildlife sanctuaries?

National parks in India are closed for monsoon season i.e. from June/July to October every year. This allows the jungles to recoup and gives them privacy as it is their mating season. The best season, weather wise is winters November to February but peak Indian summers provide best sightings of the big cats. Animals come out in open areas within the forest quite frequently to quench their thirst and hence increased sightings. So my vote goes to Summers!

Are the wildlife safaris ethical in India?

Yes. All the safaris in wildlife sanctuaries and national parks are ethical and managed by respective state tourism boards. Only limited number of entry permits are issued per day and everything is computerized to avoid errors. Tourist identity is matched at entry gates before each safari.

Elephant safaris are banned at most places and all tourists must do safaris in forest vehicles such as gypsy’s and canters.

What is Sustainable Travel or What is Sustainable Tourism?

Sustainable travel means finding a way that tourism can be maintained long-term without harming natural and cultural environments. Sustainable travel should minimise the negative impacts of tourism and ideally be beneficial to the area in which it takes place.

Let us go over some sustainable travel tips to become a responsible traveler.

Sustainable Transport

The mode of travel is probably the first thing one thinks of while planning a trip. Depending upon the destination and distance one decides to use the train, bus or flight.

Did you know the flight’s takeoffs and landings create most of an airplane’s carbon emissions?

That is why overland travel is the best option.

Overland travel or Overlanding

Historically, “Overlanding” is an Australian term to denote the droving of livestock over very long distances to open up new country or to take livestock to market far from grazing grounds. But in modern times it relates to traveling on land, covering a long distance, wherein the journey is more important than the destination.

Modes of Overland travel include

Railways: Railways are however the best ways to travel comfortably within a country. They are safe, affordable and give you a good chance to have fun on the run. You can also catch up on that much-needed sleep. This is by far the best way of sustainable travel.

Roadways: Overlanding is also thankfully becoming more popular using campervans or private cars and it is better for the environment than flights.

Public transport: Buses, metro, sky trains, trams, trains are the best means of public transport which are time-saving and extremely ethical to the place of travel. Also, let’s face it, it saves a ton of money and you can get from one place to another in a quarter of the cost if you ride a vehicle or hire a cab. Plus you can catch up some sleep, listen to music or read up a blog while commuting.

Walk/Bicycle: Even better for the environment is exploring the new area on foot or by bicycle. While many Europeans countries use bicycles as their everyday means of transport, as visitors we can at least do our bit to rent them.

Sustainable Travel Products/ Eco-products

As zero waste living is slowly picking up as a lifestyle choice, it is important to start off somewhere with small changes during travel. Here are some great options.

Reusable bottles 

In developing counties, the water available at water ports is generally filtered and fit for drinking. In developed countries, tap water is the best choice. Gone are the days when you would have to buy a PET mineral water bottle while traveling. With an estimated 91 per cent of plastic going unrecycled, it’s better for the environment if travelers cut out the usage of plastic altogether.

You will find water filters almost at all tourism locations across Asia and it is highly recommended to carry your own bottle everywhere.

Refilling water is now considered cool and saves a lot of money and is environmentally safe. Sustainable Tourism in Luang Prabang is one such inspiring example of taking sustainability too seriously especially for tourist towns. 

Ecofriendly Toiletries

Wooden toothbrushes, chewable toothpaste, bath bars, shampoo bars, organic detergents, wooden combs. The list is unending. There has been a revolution in terms of eco-friendly toiletries not just for the travel community but for regular usage. And if you haven’t taken the ride on this yet, it is high time to switch.

Since we are on the topic of sustainable toiletries, it is important to mention the use of water instead of tissue paper! I just had to say this. Worldwide, the equivalent of almost 27,000 trees is either flushed or dumped in landfills which can be attributable to toilet paper.

Menstrual cups

When the PMS has to strike it will strike. It doesn’t matter whether you’re chasing waterfalls in Laos or admiring the tulips in Netherlands or camping in Rishikesh. Menstrual cups are emerging as the most eco-friendly solution as against disposing of tampons or sanitary pads which may take years for decomposition.

No packaging shampoo and soap bars

Liquid shampoos and soaps are harmful to the environment as they need the plastic packaging to fill them. Post usage they are chucked in the trash cans and on to the landfill site. A few of them may get recycled but most end up rotting in the landfill for years or sometimes in the ocean bed.

Packaging shampoo in a glass or metal bottle doesn’t make sense to a recycling a glass bottle is an extremely energy-intensive process. However, there are a few companies which allow you to return your bottles for cleaning and refilling. This means you buy a product from them and can return your empty when purchasing a new one. You don’t actually refill the container yourself, the company takes it away, cleans it, and refills on the production line. But I feel that also puts a burden of cleaning it.

The best option for this is switching to shampoo bars and soap bars. They either come in paper packaging or jute packaging and do not harm the environment.

Another organic shampoo is using of Aritha, also known as soap nut from India. According to Ayurveda, the nut has benefits for healthy hair and scalp, and been used for centuries as an anti-hair loss shampoo. You can make soap nut shampoo, even at home.

Ecofriendly cutlery

As a kid when I used to travel, I remember my mom used to pack spillable food in stainless steel containers and others would be neatly wrapped in a newspaper. Over time, I noticed people shifting to styrofoam plates, use and throw containers, plastic cutlery, basically, something you throw and don’t need to wash or take care of after the eating business.

This has harmed the planet in more ways than one!

Ecofriendly cutlery is the way ahead. From wonderfully flavorful edible spoons to arboreal eating utensils, from compostable cutlery made with Corn Starch to affordable bamboo cutlery, there are many eco-friendly cutlery options to chose from – perfect as the sustainable travel tips. They are high on utility especially while camping or traveling to remote places.

I personally carry a stainless steel cutlery pouch as I do not believe in disposing of anything even if it ecofriendly with alternative options. My pouch has a fork, spoon, straw which can be used anywhere – especially for street food.

Sustainable Accommodation

People often forget the importance of choosing sustainable accommodation while traveling. While it is the choice of most people, my personal preference and recommendation are to go for a local homestay. 

Homestays and AirBnBs

Homestays are a wonderful way to know the foreign land in a local way, staying with a local family. The interactions you will have with the family eating local food will carve a beautiful memory of your stay in a foreign locale. This helps a local family to earn some money and you save some!

Housesitting or Couchsurfing 

If you plan to stay for an extended period of time in a place, housesitting or Couchsurfing is one the most practical and sustainable travel tips. Housesitting is what a volunteer does when someone asks them to live in their home while they are away on holiday or travelling. Housesitting could be caring for the house, for pets or for the plants of the host. While you may not know the host in this way, you are living in a home away from home!

Luxury and Sustainability

While homestays are a perfect option, sustainability is not limited and there are many luxurious properties which believe in responsible tourism. Properties like Amari Residences, Bangkok and Luang Say Residence, Luang Prabang have made sustainability a part of their regime and even attract tourists with their ethics.

Pack Light, Pack responsibly

Give a break to yourself from lugging around the heavy bags. Did you know the heavier the luggage, the more fuel needed in the flight? I know it may become difficult to do so while visiting a cold country and posing in the same clothes for photographs but one can always be creative to mix and match clothes to make it look different. Also, why not try local shampoo and soap rather than carrying it all the way?

I always thought it is not possible to carry for a trip in a backpack, but trust me it not as difficult.

It is also good to be informed about the ingredients of your favorite products. Avoid packing and using shampoo, toothpaste and face packs with microbeads. Try using biodegradable organic products and ensure you leave the place clean for future visitors.

Say no to souvenirs from nature

I hear so many people say they pick up something from nature instead of manmade souvenirs to keep the memory alive. 

BUT.. You have got it all wrong! 

Don’t collect stones, shells or sand. It may be a souvenir for you but when you gift it/share its photo with others you are indirectly implying them to collect when they go. Yes, believe it or not, it does leave a little impact. 

Remember this tagline? – It’s only one straw, said 1 billion people.

Well collecting souvenirs from nature is something similar. 

Instead, shop something local!

Shop Local

Whether it is Ao Dai from Vietnam, A block printed saree from India, or a Kimono from Japan, shopping local products support local economies which also means encouraging traditional artists and craftsmen to continue their creativity. That’s a souvenir you must take back home!

If you are a backpacker and do not want to invest in clothes and prints, there are always edible souvenirs to carry with you – tea, coffee, snacks, chocolates, not that’s what I call a yummy souvenir.

Volunteering as a way of travel

Volunteering is the best way to enjoy like a local and earn some money (or not). Not to forget the amazing experience you’ll have for the lifetime for helping a community get water tap or roof for their house or biodiversity restoration or teaching kids in remote areas with no school. I have volunteered at Triund with an NGO in Himachal Pradesh in India. 

Give your electronics the much-required break

In the world when we are so obsessed with checking into every place we visit and snapchatting our journey and sharing what we ate on instagram, we are putting away our loved ones with whom we are traveling. If you’re traveling alone and need pictures for the blog/social media put them away till you are back home. Save energy by switching off the devices.

Turn off all electronic appliances when you leave your hotel room (except the refrigerator)

Hotels use huge amounts of electricity to make their property look beautiful. Let’s be responsible travelers and turn off the air conditioning, lights and fans on the way out of our room.

After the last few years, I have been consciously choosing my vacations to places which are close to nature. Being a wildlife enthusiast and nature lover, it acts as a major detox for me, which helps me unwind! Try it, you will love it too!

Thankfully, there are many such tours happening across the world, which helps you connect with nature. 

If you love wildlife trips, remember

Do not feed wild animals!

This includes monkeys, cows, birds in urban areas (yes, we have them all in developing countries) yes, in the city. Feeding animals makes them habituated to the food (example: pigeon menace across the world) and they do not put efforts to find food for themselves which nature has designed them to do. Leaving food in the zoo, national park or any sanctuary is a strict no-no!

Gir National Park: Weekend trip

After taking online permits weeks in advance (online permits are compulsory and can be availed 90 days in advance for safari) and costs Rs. 800 per person). We drove from Ahmedabad to Gir National Park – a comfortable 350 km ride by road. Stopping at Limdi for a quick breakfast, we continued on Rajkot highway to reach Gir also known as Sasan-Gir by 2pm just in time to have lunch and catch the 3pm safari.

Safari timings: 6am – 9am, 9am – 12 noon, 3pm – 6pm

After a super yummy lunch, we went to the vehicle desk and after showing our online permit we got our open gypsy (which can accommodate 6 people) and allotted guide. A gypsy costs Rs. 1500 for the safari and the guide cost is Rs 500 – all fixed rates. Hence including the permit charges, each safari costs approximately Rs 3500 (for 2 persons).

Day 1: Route 2 here we come:

10 minutes into the safari, we saw a family of Eurasian Thick-knee also known as Eurasian stone curlew or simply stone-curlew. Beautifully camouflaged with the leaf litter this species prefers dry open habitats to dwell. It is largely nocturnal and its food consists of insects, frogs and rodents.

The second species we spotted was Mottled Wood Owl. It was difficult to spot him in all those tree branches but owls are generally known to have their fixed tree branches where they dwell. Our guide knew it and so could show it to us. He seemed to be resting so we headed off next.

Another bird. This was our afternoon! We easily spotted this large wader – the Red wattled Lapwing or the did-he-do-it bird? Yep that’s exactly how he sounds as if he was saying it loud and clear.

Finally a mammal in sight! One of the hundreds of Spotted Deer we saw. See what i did there? So our guide said there are over 40,000 deers in the park. No wonder, the lion population is increasing. Enough food for them right?

I really love the name of this bird – Tickell’s blue flycatcher. The name commemorates the British ornithologist Samuel Tickell. Such a bright metallic sheen!

And there he was – an handsome lion of Gir National Park. He seemed to have injured himself in a territorial fight. He had an amazing aura that defied and justified that age is just a number and he’s still young at heart.

Later we came across a pride of 3 sub adult lion, 1 sub adult lioness and 2 lioness. This sub-adult lioness was just too cute and i had to photograph her. I would like to call her the Princess of Gir National Park.

We came across 2 more prides in varying numbers and genders and were all in happy, relaxing or playful mood. Some were thirsty as well.

At 6:30 pm it was time to bid adieu to Gir National Park, when a gypsy ahead of us suddenly stopped near a water stream. The guide pointed to something in left direction and it took a while to spot a leopard who had come downstream to quench his thirst. Now that was an ultimate highlight of Day 1 and sad coz my camera memory card was full and i could not click his picture!!

Day 2: Route 4

We started our day 2 of Gir National Park with an early 6am safari to get some shots of morning activity (probably a hunt) of the lions. Lions tend to hunt super early in the morning and relax/sleep for rest of the day. They tend to sleep for almost 20-21 hours a day. No wonder they are called King of Jungle.  We spotted fresh pugmarks which indicated a very recent passing by of a lioness.

We went ahead with the hope of catching something interesting when our guide spotted this Shikra. A small raptor with sharp red eyes was on his morning prowl looking down for a rodent.

I seriously do not know these jungle guides can spot the most amazingly minute things. He spotted a pair of Yellow- crowned woodpecker making holes in the tree to get their morning breakfast of termites. And then an Indian Nightjar. Mistaken as owl, our guide spotted this highly camouflaged bird on a tree branch. Such a beauty!

The highlight of Day 2! A young male walking besides a railway track. He eventually crossed the track. I did get some amazing shots.

The Kamleshwar Dam, officially known as the Hiran-I Dam, is a reservoir on the Hiran river and is located within the Gir National Park. If you are lucky you may spot some Marsh crocodiles here (we didn’t).

In the Gir National Park you will come across people on foot with a group of cattle grazing around.These people live among the lions and milk their cattle for a living! Known as “Maldharis”, they live in scattered settlements inside the Gir National Park and have contributed for their protection and well being since many years. Ask them if they fear the predators and they simply smile and head off!

In total we saw 25 Asiatic lions and 1 leopard, a few hundred spotted deer, few sambars, 2 nilgai, 1 jackal, 1 wild boar and many birds in 2 days.

We drove back to Ahmedabad with a smile on our faces.

How to Reach Gir National Park

By Air : The nearest airports to the Gir National Park are Keshod airport and Rajkot airport.

By Train : Junagadh and Veraval railway stations are the nearest railway station from the Gir national park, located at around the same distance from the park.

By Road : The park is well-connected to some of the major cities of Gujarat by a good road. Somnath to Gir is 67 km and Dwarka to Gir is 285km. Both are must-visit destinations and can be combined along with a trip to Gir National Park.

Tips for sustainable Gir National Park trip

• Do not under any circumstances get down from your gypsy. Even if your vehicle breaks down, the guide and driver will make sure to arrange another vehicle so do not panic.
• Wear camouflage colours which will easily blend with the jungle – shades of green, brown and grey.
• It is totally understandable to get excited when you spot a wild animal in jungle. But do not make noises – whisper if necessary.
• Do not wear perfumes or body spray in the jungle.
• You will get super thirsty and hungry during a 3 hour safari. Carry water and food but do not dispose plastic or leftover food in jungle. Keep it in your bag or gypsy and dispose safely once you return to hotel.
• Do not feed anything to wild animals. Spotted deer commonly venture outside of national park boundary but you should not feed them anything.
• Try not to point out at birds. There have been instances where raptors take notice of pointing towards small, weak exotic birds and hunt them down.
• And last and not the least, respect the gypsy driver and guide. If you do not spot a wild animal do not blame them, remember you’re in a jungle and not a zoo to have surety of spotting animals.
