Eravikulam National Park Animals and Birds

Apart from the main attraction of Nilgiri Tahr which is found in abundance, Golden Jackal, Jungle Cat, Dhole, Leopard and Tiger are some of the predators documented here. Some little-known animals such as Nilgiri Langur, Stripe-necked Mongoose, Indian Porcupine, Nilgiri Marten, Small Clawed Otter, Ruddy Mongoose, and Dusky Palm Squirrel are also found.

132 species of birds have been recorded which include endemics like Black-and-Orange Flycatcher, Nilgiri Pipit, Nilgiri Wood Pigeon, White Bellied Shortwing, Nilgiri Flycatcher and Kerala Laughingthrush.

Eravikulam National Park entry fee and timings

The National Park opens daily at 8 am and closes at 2 pm. The permit is available online as well as at a ticket window of the park gate. 

The permit charges for the Eravikulam National Park safari are

Indian Adults – INR 200

Foreign Nationals – INR 500

Ordinary Camera – INR 50

Video Camera – INR 350

Reservation fee INR 50 (Reservation counter 9 am – 3 pm at the Information Centre, Munnar)

When to visit Eravikulam National Park

Planning a visit to Eravikulam National Park depends upon when the park is open for visitors. The park is closed twice from July to August for their mating season (all national parks in India are closed during this time) and then the second time while giving birth to the calves in the months of January to March. 

So, the best time to visit the park is in the summer months – April to June or in the winter months from October – to January. I visited in December second week and the weather was perfect, and so was the sighting. 

Start the safari as early as possible in the morning so as to skip the queues, avoid crowds and in pleasant weather.

Eravikulam National Park Safari: My experience

The biggest mistake I made was not to book the safari in advance. Honestly, visiting the park was not one of the things to do in Munnar but only when I reached Munnar and my hotel owner convinced me to go there. So I started on an early morning post breakfast. The car driver warned me of long queues but I was determined to pay my visit no matter what.

The car dropped me at the ticket window gate and I could see a long queue even before the ticket window had actually opened. I was not sure what to do as I would easily spend an hour just in the queue. I relented and walked to the end of the queue to place myself.

It was well over 90 minutes when I got my permit to go into the park. I was given two slips which I had to hand over to the shared bus driver and another one for the entry into the park. Yes, private vehicles are not allowed in the Eravikulam National Park Safari and neither are open gypsy like other Indian National Parks. Also Read: Manas National Park

I stood in another queue for the shared bus and finally after 15 minutes the bus arrived and took the visitors up the hills. The bus accommodated about 30 people. I could feel the air getting crisper with each turn on the hill loops. After about 10 minutes we were dropped at the entrance of the Eravikulam National Park. From there it was a safari walk. No vehicles are allowed beyond this point. Basically, visitors are allowed to walk in the designated areas to spot the animals and appreciate the rolling hills and visit Anamudi, the highest peak in India south of the Himalayas.

Visitors can spend as much time as they want at the top of the hill. You are allowed to hire a private guide with permission from the park if you book in advance.

Once you are done, you have to come back to the designated area for shared bus pick up wherein the buses will take you back to the ticket window station. 

If the weather is pleasant, the walk can be quite enjoyable with epic views of the hills. I personally liked the hike which was on a nice and flat concrete road (yes there is no forest or nature trail here), it had panoramic views, a well-laid path and there’s the chance to spot wildlife too. So, if you are expecting to go on a long trek into nature, I would recommend booking one with the park in advance.

I walked and walked and walked. I overheard a lot of groups who were disappointed as to not spot anything and that they wasted the money. But I didn’t lose hope, yet!

I saw a group of people gathered near some bushes and their excited voices meant they saw something. Yep, I finally managed to see the Nilgiri Tahr. The deer seem terrified with so many people pushing and shoving each other to get a glimpse. 

And it managed to escape away.

Most people from this group turned back, but I decided to go further. And I was rewarded with more sightings. 

Almost 2 hours into the Eravikulam National Park Safari, I was hungry and wanted to pee. I had seen paid eco-toilets on my way up so I decided to hurry back down. These are located a little way up a hill just beyond the souvenir shop. 

And just like that I was back at the bus pick up point, happy and satisfied to have seen the Nilgiri Tahr in the wild.

Because all the proceeds go towards the park maintenance. I love national park merchandise and I do pick up something or the other. I paid a quick visit and picked a t-shirt. Merchandise here includes caps, safari hats, t-shirts, fridge magnets and even little Nilgiri Tahr deers as souvenirs!

Places to visit near Eravikulam National park

Lakkam Falls

The Lakkam Waterfalls originate in the heart of the Eravikulam National Park offering breathtaking views. It’s by far one of the pristine waterfalls in the entire town of Munnar and you don’t need a national park permit to visit.

Entrance to the falls cost INR 20 and it provides a cool respite. It is located a few kilometres from the park, so if you are visiting make sure you ask your driver to stop here for a while.

Yellapatty Tea Gardens

The Yellappetty tea gardens are located on the Munnar – Kodaikanal route. Located 32 km from Munnar city centre the Yellappetty tea gardens can be reached after crossing the Mattuppetti dam. Where to stay in Munnar

Munnar is a family favorite destination and also popular among honeymoon couples. The pleasant weather allures visitors of all ages and interests to visit Munnar all year round. For the same reason, there are a lot of accommodation options in Munnar. 

I stayed at the Blackberry Hills Resort Munnar and it had the most beautiful unparalleled views of the tea gardens. My favourite part was their Hornbill restaurant whose location felt like it was suspended in the hills. They even have a walking trail from the restaurant to a village in the valley nearby which equals a birdwatching trail too.

Tips for Eravikulam National Park Safari

• Just like every national park in India, spotting a Nilgiri Tahr is not guaranteed. Over 850 deers are spread across 97 square kilometres of land which means the chances of spotting are less. They’re even less when you think that you’re only allowed to explore a few kilometres of that on a set walking path!
• But patience is the key. Keep your eyes and ears open rather than clicking selfies all over the way. 
• Don’t limit yourself to a particular distance. Push those boundaries for spotting wildlife and rewarding yourself with amazing views.
• Hire a guide for increasing your chances of spotting the Nilgiri Tahr.
• But if you still run out of luck, the views from the top of the Eravikulam National park safari are still well worth the ticket price. I still think that a visit to the park is worth it for the breathtaking views you can get from up here!

Sustainable tips for Eravikulam National Park safari

• Do not carry food or beverage on the national park premises as it is banned. There is a cafeteria in case you are hungry and want a snack. You can carry a water bottle though.
• Do not dispose of plastic bottles and wrappers in the national park. Dispose of in the trash bin in the cafeteria. Remember, it is a plastic-free zone.
• Smoking, consumption of alcohol and other contrabands inside the Park is prohibited so please respect it.
• Do not feed the deers. They thrive on the grass in the valley which is their natural food.
• Do not tease or disturb the wild animals by intimidating or hooting or chasing them.
• Keep your mobile phones switched off or in aeroplane mode just to take pictures. Respect the wildlife by not playing music loudly, honking or speaking loudly. 
• Do not urinate in the open. Kindly use the eco-toilets.

About Blackbuck National Park

Blackbuck National Park is spread over 34 square kilometres, and divided into two parts: the Grassland Area and the Wetland Area. A narrow road divides the park and visitors can enter both of these areas.

In yesteryear, this was the private grassland of the Maharaja of Bhavnagar for hunting blackbucks with his famous hunting cheetahs. In post-Independence India, this park was established in 1976 and doubled in size in 1980 protecting the wildlife. The cheetahs also do not exist.

Wildlife in Blackbuck National Park

The threatened species of Indian blackbuck has a population of over 5000 in the grasslands of Velavadar. They are a sight to behold, with the adult males sprinting off the ground, a behaviour designed to advertise the antelope’s fitness and ward off predators. You can tell the males by their corkscrew horns, pale black upper bodies, and white underbellies. Females and juveniles lack horns and are a sandy brown colour. The other major mammal, in the park is the nilgai or blue bull. Other easy-to-spot mammals include wild boar, the Indian grey mongoose, and the black naped hare.

Apart from Blackbuck, Velavadar is classified as an Important Bird Area by Birdlife International, and is a birder’s delight, with over 200 species of birds found in the grassland. It is mainly popular as the world’s largest roosting site of Harriers (pallid, montagu’s, western marsh, and hen harriers) which migrate in winters. Other birds in grassland include larks, francolin, stonechat, etc. and in wetlands include greater flamingos, pelicans, common cranes, painted storks etc. The grasslands are also a raptors’ paradise which include short toed eagle, steppe eagle, tawny eagle, eastern imperial eagle, short eared owl, etc.

Predators such as the Indian striped hyena, the golden jackal, the Indian fox, jungle cat and Indian grey wolf have also made this area their home. Many species of reptiles also live here, such as the saw-scaled viper, Indian cobra and common krait.

Safari Cost And Timings

Unlike most national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in India, visitors can take their own cars into the grasslands. The track is cleared marked which needs to be followed. It is compulsory to have a guide with you in the car. Visitors can hire a private safari vehicle as it gets really difficult to get bird photos in flight from your closed hatch of the car. Here is the cost break up (as of December 2019).

Rs. 500: Entry fees per vehicle (do consider one seat of guide)

Rs. 400: Forest department guide fees

Rs. 200: Per camera

Rs. 2000: Private safari (plus guide fees and camera fee)

There are 3 safari timings:

7 am to 10am

10am to 1pm

4pm to 7pm

Accommodation at Blackbuck National Park, Velavadar

There are two options for those who want to stay at Velavadar.

Forest Lodge

It is owned and managed by the forest department and has 2 categories of rooms which are basic, clean and with food options.

Guest house: Available with 4 rooms called Kaliyar Bhavan

Cost: Rs. 150 per person

Dormitory rooms: 2 dormitories which can accommodate upto 9 people each

Cost: Rs. 1350 for the whole dormitory

Both accommodations are located within the park, surrounded by grasslands with wildlife visible from the lodge itself. You can reserve the rooms by writing to bbnp.reservation@gmail.com and paying online. Meals cost Rs. 150 per person and Rs. 40 for breakfast.

Blackbuck Safari Lodge

It is a luxurious hotel with a multi cuisine restaurant and private pools.

When to visit Blackbuck National Park

Indian summers (March – June) are unbearable with temperatures hovering over 40°C. However it is a good time for sightings as animals congregate near water sources and the grass is sparse. However migratory birds are not present during this time. The park is closed from mid June to mid October. Winters (October to February) offer the best of bird watching and animal gazing with pleasant temperatures during the day.

How to reach Blackbuck National Park

By road:

Velavadar is 65 km from Bhavnagar and 150 km from Ahmedabad. Government run buses (GSRTC) have good frequency from all major Gujarat cities to Bhavnagar. If you are traveling via road from other states, you have to reach Ahmedabad first.

By train:

Bhavnagar is the closest railway station. You have to travel by road for further reaching Velavadar.

By air:

The closest airport is Ahmedabad.

Sustainable tips for visiting Blackbuck National Park

• Even if visitors are allowed to take their own car, visitors are not allowed to get down. Earlier it was allowed, but now it is not. There are camera traps and you will be fined if you get down. You are however allowed to get down near the wetland.
• Wear camouflage colours which will easily blend with the jungle – shades of green, brown and grey.
• It is totally understandable to get excited when you spot a wild animal in the grassland. But do not make noises – whisper if necessary.
• Do not wear perfumes or body spray in the jungle.
• Carry water and food but do not dispose plastic or leftover food in the grasslands. Keep it in your bag or gypsy and dispose safely once you return to the hotel.
• Do not feed food to wild animals.

How to Reach Sattal from Nainital

By Road

The Pangot Bird sanctuary is located at a distance of 13km from Nainital city and can be reached by self-driving or by hiring a taxi cab. The Sanctuary is located at a distance of 355 km from Delhi and 365 km from Agra. Local cabs from Nainital are available for Rs 2,000-3000 per day. 

By Train

Kathgodam Railway station is the nearest railway station which is about 20 km from the Pangot and Kilbury Sanctuary. It is possible to hire a taxi leading to the sanctuary.

By Flight

Pantnagar Airport is the nearest airport which is around 95 km from the Pangot and Kilbury Bird Sanctuary. It is possible to hire a taxi leading to the sanctuary which will take around 2 to 3 hours to reach.

Where to Stay in Sattal / Pangot / Kilsbury

Jungle Lore Birding Lodge is the first birding lodge in India. It has four cottages with rooms built like British bungalows and is located on a hillside overlooking the vast open forest.

Pinewood Cottage is 15km from Nainital and offers facilities like bird watching, trekking, rock climbing, rafting, and night safari 

Kilbury Forest Rest House, built by the British, is equipped with all modern amenities. The walk from Pangot to Kilbury Forest Rest House is very popular as it traverses through thick oak, pine, bamboo, cedar, and rhododendron forests

Nainital to Sattal Drive

About 13 km away from the Nainital city is the Pangot village located at a height of 6,510 ft above sea level. Pangot village is a famous tourist destination as it houses over 580 documented species of birds. While birdwatching in Pangot is a big attraction, the oak forests and the blooming rhododendron trees make the landscape even more stunning.

Sattal Birding

We were woken up by the songs of a variety of birds that we had not heard before. Excited, we mounted the lens on the camera and rushed towards the backyard of the property. What we saw and captured in our camera for the next 2 hours was a celebration of winged creatures. I hope you enjoy this photo journal of Pangot, Bhimtal and Sattal Birding.

Verditer Flycatcher

While birding in Pangot, one is bound to come across the Verditer Flycatcher that is abundantly found here. It was one of the first birds we spotted while we were on our way to Pangot from Nainital. They were omnipresent in the area.

The flycatcher felt at home with our presence and happily posed for us. 

Blue whistling thrush

A blue whistling thrush played hide and seek outside our accommodation whistling to glory while the morning sun shone bright and glistened on his blue feathers. He slowly glided into the nearby shrubs, probably because he did not like the shutter sound of my camera.

Kalij Pheasant

A discussion about our interest in birdwatching with the hotel owner leads him to inform us that he has been observing Pheasants on his property. He was quick to ask the bell boy if he spotted any previous evening. We were hoping to capture him in our cameras.

While walking towards the backyard, we saw a black silhouette crossing the parapet between 2 properties. It only took us seconds to identify it but the red-eyed bird known as Kalij Pheasant had crossed the boundary wall to another side. But we still managed to photograph him!

Blue Winged Siva

Soon enough a pair of Blue Winged Siva descended on the marble bath of the property where we were staying. Their playfulness was so oblivious to our presence and they enjoyed their romantic bath together which lasted for a short time.

Black Chinned Babbler

Two spectacled biscuit-coloured birds now touched down on the water bath. They were playful but not comfortable sharing the bath with the Indian Black lored tit. The male made sure they did not want the Black Lored Tit there and shooed him away to have a private bath with the lady.

Black Headed Jay

A small movement in nearby bushes made us strain our eyes and neck to see who was hiding behind the branches. A blue mirage is all that we saw. Noiseless we stood there for the shy blue bird to come out. At some time there were not one but three black-headed jay on the tree. There seemed to be 2 males and 1 female as the males were doing a display pattern to woo the lady.

Rufous Sibia

There was a flutter in between the bright red rhododendrons. A rust-coloured bird flew by. On landing a couple of branches away on an old oak tree, it posed for us. The slender buffy-rufous coloured bird called Rufous Sibia, grew comfortable and flew to the parapet near the road and even posed for us.

Grey-winged Blackbird

Our car crossed a black bird sitting on the road who seemed to be scavenging. We halted and walked back to the spot to find him still doing the same. On closer look, we saw that he was actually clearing the fallen leaves and making the area clean. Probably a fan of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan! We saw the female counterpart doing the same a couple of meters above the cliff. We have no idea why they were doing what they were doing.

Since we did not want to stay in Pangot, we never really researched for a day guide who could show us the birds around. We just walked through the valleys of forests and stopped if we heard a bird call or flutter of wings or just about any movement in the trees.

However, a couple of hours spent here were nothing less than a turbo charge for us which left us wanting more and planning a dedicated trip to Pangot and Sattal with a guide.

Sustainable tips for Birding in Sattal

• Wear camouflage colours that will easily blend with the surrounding – green and brown shades work best around the trees.
• Do not make noises when you spot a bird, it may get distracted and fly.
• Do not wear perfumes or body spray when you go birdwatching.
• Try to avoid bird call apps to attract birds or make them look your way for a good photo. It is just unethical.
• Do not dispose of wet waste or plastic in the jungle valleys.

There is clear pathway which leads visitors to the Mausoleum. Once you reach there visitors are expected to be very disciplinary and walk in a steady pace. You can only whisper if you must and are not allowed to smile, or put your hands in your pockets. Food, water bottles, jewellery and electronics items including mobile phones are prohibited. All these belongings must be handed to the guard before entering the mausoleum and you can have it after you are to leave from the complex.

Tip: children under three years are not allowed to go inside the mausoleum.

Once you enter the mausoleum in a never ending puzzle pattern, you reach the Ho Chi Minh’s preserved body neatly resting in glass casket. The room is dimly lit, and visitors have only a short time to look at it (just like Indian temples, haha).

The entire complex is quite big, and there are many other things to see other than Mausoleum like Ba Dinh Square, The Presidential Palace (which you can see only from a distance), Ho Chi Minh Stilt House, Ho Chi Minh Museum and One Pillar Pagoda. The entire visit will easily cost you about 2 – 2.5 hours but it is totally worth it.

Entry fee: 40,000 VND/person

Timings: Tuesday – Thursday 07:30 – 10:30, Saturday & Sunday 07:30 – 11:00

Dress Code: Anything that covers your entire body. Shorts, skirts, tank tops, and hats are not allowed.

Tran Quoc Pagoda

As soon as we left from the Mausoleum, it started drizzling and it continued to do so till be reached Tran Quoc Pagoda. According to me it is one of the most stunning temples in Vietnam.

It just seemed these 2 days in Hanoi would be full of rains! Tran Quoc Pagoda is a symbol of Vietnamese Buddhism which is built in an intricate way. It is a masterpiece of Vietnamese sculptural art, with a tranquil backdrop. The temple is spread over 3,000 square metres and the main pagoda of the temple is 15 metres tall and has eleven levels. A gemstone lotus sits proudly symbolising the Buddha at the top of the tower and there are many carved statues on the walls.

In the pagoda’s garden stands a Bodhi tree, which is attached to a past story that in 1959, Indian President Rajendra Prasad offered the Pagoda a bodhi tree as a gift. The plant was grafted from the holy bodhi tree where Sakyamuni sat in meditation and achieved enlightenment in India 25 centuries ago. Today, the tree green and luxuriant, shading over part of the pagoda’s yard.

Hoan Kiem Lake

Hoan Kiem lake is an idyllic destination for tourists and locals in Hanoi. Watch the locals go about their daily activities . Some locals do exercise near the lake, others commune to work and prepare for the coming busy day. You can just sit by the lake and take in the city’s vibe.

Temple of Literature

The Temple of Literature was built as a place of learning and is known as Vietnam’s first national university. In earlier times, students at this university studied literature, poetry, and philosophy. The university closed in 1779 and is now used a quiet retreat to read, walk in the courtyard or spend time in meditating by the locals and tourists alike.

The Temple of Literature has five different courtyards, which has gardens, ancient trees, topiary animal sculptures, and ponds.

Entry fee: 10,000 VND

Timings: 8:30 – 11:30 and 13:30 – 16:30 everyday except Mondays

We spent the evening at Hanoi’s Old Quarter having coffee, dinner and shopping for souvenirs and looking at the traffic go by.

PLACES TO VISIT NEAR HANOI

Halong Bay

Second day was all about Halong Bay! It was really difficult to pick a boat tour for the day as there are a zillion options giving 3 to 5-star rating services and 2 days at Halong Bay or even 3 and 4, up to a week! We were low on days so had to choose a day tour. We started pretty early at 8 am from the hotel wherein we were picked up from our hotel doorstep. Thank god there was no rain but it was extremely humid.

After a couple of more stops to pick more tourists from their hotel, we started out in the van and stopped halfway to visit crafts workshops, where you can buy marble stone sculptures, plaque paintings, and hand-embroidered items. They are extremely overpriced. However, it acts as a good loo stop. We started again and reached Halong pier at around 12:00 PM.

We waited in the lounge till our tour operator got us our tickets. We were lead to our boat after crossing through a long street of shops selling souvenirs. Few minutes into the boat, lunch was served. Being a vegetarian we did not have many options but they did manage to get us some noodles and peanuts. We enjoyed the food with breathtaking scenes of the limestones in the bay.

We stopped at Thien Cung cave. It is hard to tell what it would contain looking for its exterior but the beauty of stalactites and stalagmites formation inside the cave is mesmerizing. Our tour guide showed us possible formation of shapes like those of animals and gods and it was an amazing session.

We got into the boat and made another stop after a while. Here there were options of 45-minutes of kayaking or a bamboo boat around the islands and water tunnels. We chose the bamboo boat wherein the boatwoman paddled us into this tranquil portion of Halong Bay. It was so peaceful and untouched. It was here that I thought we could have stayed in Halong for probably one more day. The emerald water and the huge cliffs just kept us in awe!

We came to our boat and it was time to head back to the pier. We returned to the Halong pier at 5:00 pm and boarded the bus and reached Hanoi at 8:30 pm.

SHOPPING IN HANOI

Like Hoi An, all cities in Vietnam are popular for their clothes and how quickly they are custom made. There are many shops selling ready made Vietnamese garments too in Old Quarter. Since I get my clothes stitched in India and the dress are similar, I did not want to indulge in shopping. If shopping is still on your mind, here are some of the must buy souvenirs from Vietnam.

MUST TRY FOOD IN HANOI

Vietnam is super popular for its food and coffee. Must try is the Pho (beef soup), spring rolls, Bun Cha, Banh Mi and green papaya salad all available as street food and in fancy restaurants. However if you are a vegetarian like me, there are a lot of options in the same restaurants too. Just tell your tour guide and he will make sure you get good vegetarian option. Overall, our visit to Hanoi was good, though I wish we had given it more time and also had travelled in non rainy season. SUSTAINABLE TIPS FOR BEST THINGS TO DO IN HANOI

• Try the local food – it is cheap and helps the local economy.
• Do not throw your waste at heritage sights and in the Halong Bay waters. There is enough plastic in it which is an eye sore for the locals and tourists who come to enjoy the nature..
• Use public transportation is not a great option so best is to take the group tour option. It is economical and who knows you may make some friends on the bus.

A little bit about Triund

Triund is situated in the lap of the Dhauladhar mountain range and is a very popular trekking spot which attracts a lot of tourists. Triund weekend trip is extremely popular amongst college goers in Delhi and Chandigarh thanks to its overnight proximity and cheap bus fares.

Triund trek for beginners is advertised by most travel agents and is known for it’s easy hiking which can be completed within one day. Due to no stay options at the hilltop, Triund is popular for camping. Though going on this hike is better with a guide, Triund trek is possible without a guide.

The 9 km kilometer hike one way, passes through steep and narrow well defined pathway. The views of the valley are breathtaking overlooking the Rhododendron if you trek in spring months (March-April). Check out this post on Rhododendron Blossoms on Triund Trek.

A waste pick-up Trek to Triund: Volunteering

Though there are many places offering different kind of volunteering opportunities, me and my fiends wanted to get attached to a cause. Since most of us worked in environment protection field, the work of Waste Warriors really appealed to us.

Waste Warriors conducts waste pick up on the popular trails in Mcleodganj – Triunk trek and Bhagsu waterfall as a part of their environment mandate. This activity is done voluntarily without any funds. Locals and tourists are encouraged to join the activity which is conducted every week – Triund on Monday through Tuesday and Bhagsu waterfall on Thursday.  If no one joins the activity, the staff still conducts it by themselves as they believe in the philosophy of keeping their own backyard clean.

Having worked in Solid waste management I could imagine the frustration the staff must be going through, managing the tons of waste every week left by ignorant tourists on hill top. The thought made me cringe and I decided to lend my hand even if it meant only only. Me and my friends decided to educate and encourage tourists not to dispose waste in valleys and to carry it back with them.

Triund trek starting point

We reached Mcleodganj after an arduous 24-hour train journey followed by 1 hour in a car on a Sunday evening. The cold got to us and we slept early to regain the energy for the hike on Monday.

The NGO staff picked us up from our guest house and we wandered through fields to reach their humble office. Other staff greeted us and gave an overview of the task ahead. They gave us waste collection sticks, bags and gloves as safety measure. We were instructed that Triund trek involves gradual to steep ascents of 9 km, which amateurs like us could cover in about 5-6 hours one way. We started from Mcleaodganj, breaking at Galu for Maggi and Chai.

Starting the trek

We started the trek looking for PET bottles of water & juice, tetra packs, biscuit & chocolate wrappers or any such potential recyclable or non recyclable waste. it was our task to pick it up with the stick and put it in the collection bags. Thanks to the sticks, the task involved very less bending on the steep slope.

We could not resist taking a break to appreciate the beautiful pathway through forests of oak, deodar and rhododendron.

Glares and Stares during Volunteering at Triund

We got glares and stares thanks to our sticks and waste bags. Some people even asked why we were doing it, some laughed at us, while some encouraged us for doing fabulous work, some looked at us and dared not to throw the bottle they were holding, just yet. We finally reach the mid-way of our trek – the Magic View chai shop. After emptying some of our bags here we headed straight up.

The last Mile

It started getting cold and we knew we were close to the top of Triund. Our bags kept getting heavier and the snow kept us motivated to keep going. We met few trekkers who had started their descend, who informed us that the view is fabulous and we should hurry up before sundown. Hurry we did!

Reaching the top for Triund Trek Camping

What a fabulous view it was and trekking all the way up the hill was worth every wrapper we picked up! The sun was setting and we retired into the forest guesthouse for a much deserved rest.

Remember, I said there is no accommodation option at hilltop? Well, there is! No, I did not lie. The privilege of resting in a guest house is given to those volunteering with the NGO. And since we were on a noble cause, we were not charged money. The guest house served the yummiest Dal-Chawal with Ghee (Rice lentil with butter) for dinner and we retired hearing yesteryear stories from the caretaker.

Triund trek: Day 2

The next day we collected waste over the hill and deposited at a common point. Over 30 beer and liquor bottles, even more, PeT bottles & tetra packs, half-burned cardboard boxes of pizza, eggshells, etc. were some of the waste we collected.

After segregating the waste into recyclable and non-recyclable we started putting them in bags which would later on be taken away by mules. Our guide and staff from Waste Warriors informed us that there are no recycling units in the nearby area in Himachal Pradesh and all the organic waste generated just sits and rots on the hills while the recyclables are separately collected to be sent to Punjab. With that talk our work for the week was done and we were ready to conquer the Triund waste hill by clicking this photo.

How to reach Triund

The major transportation hub is Dharamshala which is well-connected via air and bus. If you are coming by train best is to get down at Pathankot and hire a cab to Mcleodganj.

From the main square of McLeodganj, take a cab or walk for 3km to reach Dharamkot. The trail starts from Dharamkot primary school so as to reach the Gallu Devi Temple which is the main starting point for Triund trek.

Best time for Trek to Triund

While Triund trek is open throughout the year, I feel the best time to trek is Mid-March to the End of April during the spring season. A slight nip in the air makes the trek enjoyable and one can still find some snow at the top. Triund is closed during excessive snow or rain.

• Water-bottle
• Hat or cap or stole
• Snacks
• Medicines if you are suffering from any allergy or you are on any medication.

There are no guesthouses. However, camping in a tent is possible (there are no toilets on top). Tents are available at the shops or can be rented from Mcleodganj.

Sustainable Tips for Trek to Triund

• Carry a bag to store the wrappers and plastic packets. Ideally, dispose of it in waste bins after reaching back to Mcleodganj.
• Dispose PeT bottles at waste bins provided at every few meters or at the 2 chai shops on the way.
• Do not throw leftover food in the waste bins as the putrefying odour attracts monkeys. In order to eat that food, they topple the bins and spread the contents.
• Take food only in the quantity that you will consume.
• Avoid liquor – it harms your health while trekking and the bottle waste has to be taken by mules all the way back.

Places to visit in Bhuj

While Bhuj keeps adding tourist places in Bhuj every few years, the following list is based on the places I have been to in recent years. These are the best places to visit in Bhuj.

Prag Mahal, Bhuj and Aina Mahal, Bhuj

Two palaces ( or the remains of palaces) stand adjacent to each other – The Prag Mahal and Aina Mahal. One can see the impact of the devastating earthquake on the exterior structures of both these palaces.

Prag Mahal, Bhuj is also known as the Bhuj Palace. Prag Mahal is one of the best places to visit in Bhuj. The palace survived the impact, which was earlier built in a lavish Italian gothic style. The palace has a lavish Durbar hall, with large pillars, huge chandeliers and classic marble statues, all defining the opulence of the bygone era.

Other important parts of the palace include Corinthian pillars, carved doorways, broad window boxes and Jali work representing European flora and fauna. Do climb the stairs to reach the bell tower for an exhilarating view of the city and Bhujia Hills.

Aina Mahal

Aina Mahal literally means the ‘Palace of Mirrors’. As soon as one enters the palace, one can see an exhibit on a 15 m long scroll that depicts the Royal Procession of Maharao Shri Pragmalji Bahadur.

The palace also has exhibits that include paintings, jewelled swords, ivory inlaid doors, photographs, royal possessions and the finest samples of the Kutch embroidery.

It has countless artefacts ornamented with Venetian-style chandeliers, silver objects and clocks make it an interesting sightseeing place in Bhuj.

Kutch Museum

Kutch is also written as Kachchh. Bhuj has a city museum that houses some very rare idols and artefacts. It is one of the oldest museums in the state of Gujarat and has collections of coins and tribal art and craft which includes embroidery, mirror work, thread work and metalwork. It also has collections of inscriptions and information about the tribal community of Gujarat.

All the labels and information in the museum is bilingual – English and the regional language Gujarati for ease of understanding.

Hamirsar Lake

Come out of the Kutch museum to witness the glory of migratory birds in the Hamirsar lake which is within walking distance from each other. The lake is a manmade lake built and derives its name from the yesteryear ruler – Hamir Rao.

The lake was built in order to cater to the domestic needs of Bhuj city and is adorned with cenotaphs. Unfortunately, the cenotaphs haven’t survived the earthquake impacts but can still see some remains and the Greater Cormorants basking in the sun’s glory.

Hamirsar lake is a good place for a walk in the evening and you can find some local vendors selling snacks. Winter mornings can be really special as you can spot local as well as migratory birds like Greater flamingos, Pelicans, Black-winged stilt, etc. Hamirsar Lake is one of the best places to visit in Bhuj.

Chattardi Bhuj

The construction of cenotaphs or chhatris was done by the Royal families of erstwhile kingdoms in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Delhi and Indore, Madhya Pradesh. These umbrella-shaped dome structures were built in memory of a royal family member and do not contain the mortal remains. 

Chattardi in Bhuj is a cenotaph’s complex made of red stone. It is one of the rarest monuments existing in India as all of the tombs here are made out of Red stones.

Each tomb is different in size, shape and design with intricately carved walls and roof. Floral designs are the most common patterns found on these tombstones. Apart from floral patterns, hexagons, octagons and stripe patterns can also be seen across the walls of the structure.

Although many movies have been shot here and Chattardi has shot to fame, visiting this place will transform you into a different world altogether. Unlike other tourists, I visited this place with a guide and got amazing information about each structure’s significance. This is definitely a place to visit in Bhuj.

Swaminarayan Temple, Bhuj

The divinity of the temple can be proved during the Gujarat Earthquake of 2001. The earthquake destroyed one side of the temple facing north which was built by Lord Shree Swaminarayan. Miraculously the divine idols remained as they were, without any damage whatsoever.

It was decided that the idols would be housed inside a new grand temple. A huge temple was constructed using traditional Vedic architectural methods, on the banks of Hamirsar Lake.

Since its first brick installation ceremony on 7 May 2003, it has taken 7 years for its completion. Based on a grand podium, the new temple faces East and is constructed mainly with pure high-quality marble. It has intricate wooden carvings coated with vibrant colours that characterize this temple.

Ram Dhun temple and Ram Kund

Ram Kund is a stepwell, designed like a small reservoir in which rainwater used to be collected for drinking purposes in the past. Ram Kund is located near the Prag Mahal while on the way to the Kutch Museum, just behind the Ram Dhun Temple.

After walking along the water, pray your respects to the carvings of characters from the Ramayana, such as Ram, Sita, Lakshman and Hanuman, along with the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu over the walls in Ram Dhun temple

Bhujia Hills

The Bhujia Hill Fort lies on the outskirts of Bhuj.

Originally built as a safe house and to store defence artillery during battle, the fort was later used by the Indian Army to store ammunition. It is now barren with only a temple at the top and a proposed memorial park at the foothills of the hill.

In winters you can trek to the top of the hills for breathtaking, panoramic views of  Bhuj city. There are some steep steps on a set trail from the parking to the fort. If you are fit and want to sweat it out, Bhujia hills could be included in your list.

Vande Mataram Memorial Park Bhuj

The latest attraction added in Bhuj is the Vande Mataram Memorial Park. the Memorial Park beautifully tells the intriguing tale of India’s freedom struggle through 13 episodes – from the revolt of 1857 right up to the country’s Independence in 1947. Build in 4-D technology, this memorial aims to abide by the most exigent moment of India’s freedom struggle.

Spread across 12 acres of land, the memorial was painstakingly built over 4 years. The primary structure is modelled like the Sansad Bhavan. Indian parliament and India Gate are some of the most popular places to see in Vande Mataram memorial park.

Timings of Vande Mataram memorial park: 10 am to 7 pm. It is closed on Mondays.

Shopping in Bhuj

Going to Bhuj and not shopping is like committing a crime. Shopping in Bhuj and around for Kutch arts and crafts is a must and one of the best tourist places in Bhuj. Depending upon whether you are spending one day in Bhuj, two days in Bhuj or more, shopping can vary. There are many tourists who only tour the art and crafts scene in Kutch villages. There are 2 options for things to buy in Bhuj.

Shopping in Bhuj city

If you do not feel up to driving out of town to Bhujodi village, there is a street in the middle of the city on station road, where you can shop for artefacts, and textiles and even customize a nameplate for yourself in mirror and mud work. There is no particular name to the street but it is the one near Rajgulab shopping centre.

Shopping in Bhujodi | Famous Kutch Handicrafts

Bhujodi is a traditional crafts village which is situated about 12 km from Bhuj. The village is over 500 years old and is popular as the weaver village as the 1200 families residing here have looms in their house. Shopping in Bhujodi is probably one of the best places to visit in Bhuj Kutch!

Brightly coloured stoles, kurtas, shawls adorned on the walls of each house welcome everyone in Bhujodi. These are handwoven and hand embroidered and beautified with silk threads and mirror work in intricate designs. Other commonly seen textile products consist of bed sheets, the regional outfits called chaniya choli and dupatta.

Spend time around the villages in Kutch to explore the art and craft which is unique, vibrant and mind-blowing. Some of the options are:

Rogan art: In Nirona area

Copper bells: In Jhura area

Bhuj Kutch famous food | Must try street food in Bhuj

While common Gujarati snacks that are found all over Gujarat are found here such Sev Khamni, Puri Shak, Dhokla, Khaman, etc. there are special dishes that have made a mark. Bhuj is a paradise for street food and has many options to choose from.

Dabeli

Dabeli is a popular street food that originated in Kutch. Hence it is also known as Kutchi or Kacchi Dabeli! Kutchi dabeli is a must-try food in Bhuj that has a sweet, hot and tangy masala and is served in Bun bread.

Thali

If you want to indulge in a vegetarian thali (assortment of dishes arranged as a platter for lunch or dinner) I would highly recommend Umiyaji Dining Hall or Ashapura dining hall. Most hotels in Bhuj, also have a restaurant so that is also a good option to wind up the day with.

Gulab Pak

This is a food souvenir to take back home from Bhuj Kutch. Combining the choicest rose petals and dry fruits Gulab Pak is a delicately flavourful, luxurious sweet. Khavda is the shop that specializes in this dessert.

Best time to visit Bhuj

Bhuj in Kutch district is basically a desert and gets super hot in summer. The best time to visit Bhuj is between the months of December to March. It is also the same time when the White Desert Festival or Rann Utsav is organized.

Weather: Winter temperatures are 25 ℃ during the day and 8-10℃ at night with chilly winds. The summer temperatures hover around 50 ℃.
